If I can get myself a coach, why the fuck do I need to see your video?!?!?! Thanks man!
I’m watching in 2020. The year of Covid-19! I’ll be glad when this is over. I miss marathons! This is such a great channel!♂️
The best advice here….is to Smile❤️..love it. Happy running indeed.
Hey thank you for all your videos. I enjoyed watching your channel, and I have learned a lot. I started running half m. a year a go and I have enjoy it I train usually 4 times a week with a long run, easy run, and speed repeats. However I want to start running in trails but I am not sure how to introduce it to my training without over workout? Is it compatible to train for running half and full with trail running? Can I mix both? Thank you
Thanks for tips bruh, deff need to plan out my long run, cause I just went for a blind run & got lost haha plus it started to pour raining. Good thing I brought my gopro with me so I can share my experience haha
I started a year ago give or take as you said,30 minutes 3 or 4 times a week.1 minute run 1 minute walk.
Now I make interval training 1km run 5 min walk for 7 to 10 km distance.
I still watch your videos and learning new technics.
All I’m saying is that… everything you are say works.
Thanks.
Hey Sage, great videos and podcasts you and Sandy put out. Can you please recommend some good sunglasses for hitting the trail? Thanks
“How To Work On COURSE Strength & Balance ” I think should be ” How To Work On CORE Strength & Balance”. please get it corrected. Thank You
The view is amazing where ever that video was shot. Is that in Colorado?
I made use of this marathon training courses “Zοrοtοn Axy” (Google it) to train for my first marathon. This book contains a great training schedule and idea. I surely recommend this for anybody wishing to run their first marathon. I have been running 5ks, 10k and half marathons and decided to make the following big step to the marathon..
Thank you for the tips. Got my first Marathon in LA in March!
Bro I love when you insert your plugs so honest hahaha
Thank you for the “cup” tip. I used to have a hard time drinking out of those paper cups!
I am at 16 mile long run at my training point right now. I try to get 8 miles a day 4 days a week and at least 10 miles on the 6th day. Mile 15-16 was excruciating. Maintained an 8 min/mile pace the entire way though:-) Never slowed down. I know I won’t be able to keep that up for the full marathon, but I am sure it will help me finish my first and possibly finish before the 4 hour mark.
I guess there’s individual factors and personally I feel distance running as real challenge. According straight math I’m fully packed with fast muscle fibers as I did 100m in 12,9 seconds without any running training (it was my early 20’s) still I needed months of work clocking 5000m in sub 25min. Now in my 40’s trying to train for Marathon and avoiding speed work much as possible but my biggest improvement happened on 1500-5000m distance. Any ideas? Maybe I need test of lactic acid and max. heart rate and heart rate zone training?
interesting points,if anyone else wants to uncover how to run a marathon try Sarparder Running Expert Starter (just google it )? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my buddy got amazing success with it.
Awesome intro good video. I’m getting ready to do my 5th Marathon ( 3rd Race) on October 26. Marine Corps Marathon!!! My pre-race meal will be 3-4 slices of pizza, 2-3 bottles of Gatorade, 4-5 hours before the race. Pizza has worked for me in the past.
Thank you for all the great tips Sage! Regarding your sponsor Spring, can you convince them to ship to Europe? A lot of viewers over here:)
Thank you for being so generous with these videos. Invaluable. Thank you.
Watched this before and after my race, it’s super accurate and useful. Unfortunately I missed the part about pinching cups so I halfway drowned with my first gulp.
I’ll be running my first full marathon this December. I’m feeling a bit nervous about getting my training miles in. Thank you for your tips.
the tip about how to grab the cup is an excellent one and a super small detail that i have never seen covered in a “marathon prep” video before, so very big kudos to you for mentioning that! i will definitely remember it in November for my marathon!
First of all nice videos!
I recommend you run sometime in the future the “olympus marathon”. It’s in olympus, Greece and it’s 42k. Another race in olympus is the “olympus mythical trail” and it’s 100k. Check them out if you want. Generally olympus is a very beautiful mountain and I really recommend you to visit it someday.
Training for a 1/2 right now, hoping to run a full Marathon by the end of the year:) Thanks for the tips!
Thanks! I am going to run my first full marathon race in less than 7 hours on June 4, 2017.
Thank you for this info. I am doing the sf marathon tomorrow! ❤️
Should I run with my hip pack to store my water and my gels?
“On race day for the marathon, you are going to be on your feet for over 2 hours.”
Eliud Kipchoge: Am I a joke to you?
All the way down to the way you grab the water cup at the aid station. This is all great information for us new runners. TY
I use the Nike App and Microsoft Band (Sometimes I forget the band) and I track it all with that. They both let you take notes, its a very nice feature, glad to see its being recommended by Coach Sage. I love your videos.
Great tips!! Mindset I’ve heard is so key. Especially once you hit that halfway point.
Planning on doing a 50k in as soon as 1 year from now, might wait a couple of years
I don’t know if I want to run a marathon. I would do a half, but I just don’t have any drive to want to do the full. Maybe as I get older? I’m still enjoying doing 5k and 10k right now
No one has to buy ANY of this stuff. Just get outside and start running!
I like what you say about eating. Absolutely essential for distance. My first 3 Comrades Ultras I hit the wall at 60km. I thought it was because I hadn’t gone over 60km in training. In 2018 I consciously ate from early on and I went through 60km no problem. Unfortunately in my last 20km I slacked off and hit the wall (seriously) with only 6km to go. You learn from your mistakes. 2019 will be a feast from start to finish
Currently training for my first marathon, thanks for the great tips!
https://app.stepsetgo.com/i/melvyn4m11… this app will motivate you like hell
This is very useful Coach Sage. I ‘ve been following your video since you attended HK100. You have inspired a lot of people. I just finished my first 21.10km Half Marathon and I’m planning to celebrate my birthday in Nov by running my first Marathon.
awww you look so young in this video, sage! Thanks for all your content!
I ran London in 2001. I plan to run the Jakarta marathon this October. (My second marathon)
I am running around 25km per week right now. My marathon is in Oct. My question is about shoes. I use merrell. Is it sensible to run a street marathon in minimal shoes?
Sage, can you make a video for people that run 10 minute mile and that want to get to the next level, thanks, John.
More important* than good running shoes are good socks. You can run in anything half decent, but if you’re going out in standard cotton socks, you’re just asking for blisters.
* I’m a 7 time marathon finisher
I been running short distances almost Twenty years and completed five half marathons in the last 2 years but never a full. I started this marathon training courses “Zοrοtοn Axy” (Google it) just as I made a decision to go for a full marathon. Book very informative and lots of good suggestions. I was able to complete my first marathon and got to a Boston marathon..
25 X 400 @ 85sec… 1 min rests. This run took discipline. Thanks for the idea
I just ran my first marathon yesterday. My IT band really hurts and I can barely walk.:(
What kind of running sunglasses do you recommend sage? thanks. John.
I don’t have any cash can I still train for a marathon without all the fancy equipment. May save to invest in running shoes but that’s about it for me aha
Pinching the cup during a race was one of the coolest tips I’ve heard. Thank you SO much! Used that at my last race and it worked like a charm, able to keep running while sipping the water.:)
I am doing my first marathon in Hawaii and have been training since February. All your tips are practical and precise and true. Thank you.
I’m running the LA marathon on March 8th of 2020 for SRLA. This video helped a lot
I don’t mind running by myself, but the speed workouts are when I really feel the benefit of having teammates
Is there any type of physical strength test that can determine if someone is marathon ready?
With the amount the things people need to do this today it makes it even more amazing that the original runner was able to complete the run in sandals a tunic and some water
Great advice. People need to listen to people like you not some guy with qualifications to train, but no running experience.
Thank you, Sage for being such an inspiration. I’ll run my first Marathon on Sunday and have been resorting to your Videos for tips and advise. Your and Sandi’s videos are amazing, please keep on posting.
Really good straightforward video. Thank you Sage. Love the cup tip
I started running at age 48 august 2016 I’ve turned 49 since fell in love with the sport. I watch all of your videos, very informative thank you for you inspiration. Hoping to qualify for Boston sometime in the near future.
As a Brit I always chuckle when you use the word ‘bonk’. Bonk is slang for having sex here. Quite frankly I’m amazed anyone has the drive to keep running a bunch of miles after bonking…
I’ve got my first marathon in 15 weeks, my goal is to just finish and not die, I’m on my training plan, gradually building up, great tips thank you xx
@ harry runs
What’s your height mate? Myself I’m 5’5 I cant seem to get faster than 10 min/mile for half marathon races.
hey Sage, why do my hands swell after a long run? I am a beginner and can only run a 10 minute mile. after about 5 miles my hands swell. How can I prevent this?
I watched this before falling asleep yesterday. Today i’ve officialy became a road marathoner, on a 550m vertical course in time of 4.18h..
It was one of the most painful but also gratifying things in my life. I did it despite doing the classic bullettime 10k at 10k racepace and after that bonking and struggling with vert, distance and heat for the rest of the race while most passed me. But i still made it with quite a strong time for firstimer amateur with 1 year of running history under belt on such a course. Ive been training my ass off for this didnt have much bodily issues except the legs were killing me in last 10k. Thank you for immensely helping me with training Sage i learned alot from you.
I’m quite shocked your aid-stations don’t have fruits. I wouldn’t eat gels at aid-stations either not knowing their composition. But bananas are the bomb for me, had my first marathon last week. Didn’t bonk, didn’t hit the wall, even though I started pretty fast. I did fade away over time though in terms of pace, but still faster than my base endurance speed.
I ran my first marathon in Athens and it was an unforgettably humbling experience. It’s a difficult marathon to pace, not for beginners I think but unique. (it’s the original course after all… no doing loops inside and around one city):)
Very good speech brother. Motivational and the best part was when you said enjoy it and smile. Have a nice day
Coming from someone who has competitive track experience, plz don’t listen to this guy. Couldn’t even get thru half the vid tbh, “beet juice” doesn’t magically improve ur stamina LOL. Also don’t attempt a marathon if u only have done a 7 mile run as ur longest workout. Ur gonna be in so much pain, props to this guy for somehow pulling that off. If u haven’t run at least a 20 miler in training your gonna pay the price on your attempt.
I’m a new sub and I really enjoy your content! Very good advice! Looking forward to new videos bud!
I did a 5k the other day for the first time ever(not a race). Longest I’ve ever ran was a mile. My friend just wanted me to run with him. I didn’t even take a sip of water till I was done and it felt great. I’m joining the military at 17 Wednesday. So i have plenty of time to train. I hate running but then again it feels great when your done.
That was AWESOME! Sharing this with my running partner. Great tips. We are running our first full marathon at CIM if it doesn’t get cancelled fingers crossed! Thanks, fantastic video
Thank you for covering this topic! I have one further question: how do 170 strides per minute mesh with slow easy beginner running? I timed myself one minute at a time and could barely get 167 strides but felt I had to hurry. I don’t mind doing this one minute on, one of walking, until I build BOTH endurance and skeletal muscle capacity…any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
I don’t think 5 months is enough training time for most people. For non runners they need about double that amount of time to prepare for a marathon. Of course, people can walk part of the marathon but training to walk a marathon is kind of pointless in my opinion.
Great tips, I ran my first 12 miles yesterday & I’m so pround of going the distance. But I know this is just the beginning, I have alot more to do to being able to run a Marathon. It’s my Goal to Finish one, I noticed at my 11mile marker I was hitting my wall. I know I had one mile to go, But it had a lot to do with not having anything in my system only water from my Camel pack. I live in Hawaii & the heat isn’t a joke especially this time in summer. But usually every day I would wake up power walking on my treadmill 1 mile then incorporating some type of ab workouts. But yesterday when I ran this whole miles I didn’t have anything in my system, I woke up later than I usually did with 8+ hours of sleep & it took me 3 hours 18min to do the 12 miles. It’s going to take me awhile to get to a marathon, but I am determined:)
Been running seriously for a year and a half and i must say tracking my distance and time in a notebook is pretty key for improvement and prep 6-8 weeks before an event.
Great video! I’m running my first marathon (the SF Marathon) in November. Did you wear headphones/listen to music during the race? I’ve heard differing perspectives.
beetroot and spinach are my two least favorite foods:(
my goal is running for one hour on a treadmill. Not a marathon, but that may come later
This video was so good. I’ve signed up for the London marathon in October wish me luck
One thing I used to like to do was, after any run of 12 mi or longer, I would finish at the gym, and do about 10-15 leg presses of 400 lb or more and it was like adding half a mile to the workout for each press. Work up to this. Be safe.
Harry speaks the truth, in a very polite way. Many times you find someone just browbeating you with their PR and Harry doesn’t do that.
Giving myself 8 years will be 60 years aiming for under 4 hrs,2 years in,got the training routine
going to cross train cycling, running, swimming, actually managed to stop eating processed food feel the benefits,
how to stop or prevent the pain in kindey or side of the stomach???
So wonderful and inspiring. Thank you Harry, I appreciate you immensely.
If there is food I can run back to back but there isn’t so I pass
I am signing up in September to run the Buffalo marathon in May of 2021! I guess my main fear is my mind taking over and telling my body that I cannot finish. My dad has run two marathons, so I know I’ll have a great coach and support system:)
I love that you said cross the finish line thinking about the next race.
Running isn’t about stopping!
Great advice!!
Thx!!
Giving birth in 2 months from now. Planning to run the Disney world marathon January 2021!
Thanks for the great tips! Training for my 1st in Syracuse NY.

I’m Marathon Runner,
I hv created this YouTube channel recently where I recording all stretching/strengthening/Abs /Warm-Up workout series.
Now working on strengthening videos.
I created this account so it will be easy access to all practioner in my group to Practice strengthening workout videos.
Hope it will help you to run injury free..
Thank you.
My biggest advice is to skip the half marathon and just go for the full monty. If you are able to push yourself to run 13.1 miles, you can definitely run 26.2, it is 99% mental. I was in the worst shape of my life (33, pulled hamstring, bad knees) and i ran my first marathon a few months ago. I only went on 10 training runs leading up to the marathon, so i was definitely dieing during the race but i am glad i got the big one out of the way. Next year i will probably run the half
Running my first Marathon in October! I’m running the Detroit Free Press Marathon.
Just saw your video liked it very much and I was inspired so I have done a channel, please need your support and feedback. If you want to support please subscribe and watch my videos which has successfully completed 40+ sub.Wanted to spread happiness and want to see the public laugh. How you make so awesome video.T-series,pwidiepie is waste in front of you.
I’m running my first half marathon in March but would one day love to be able to have a go at running a full one
Tomorrow is the marathon race and I’m practising from today
Like if same case with you
I’ll be turning 31 later just month, I never really had a desire to do one until lately. Great tips
Hi Sage. Thanks for sharing your insights with us. You’ve been hugely helpful to me, as I’m sure you’ve been for many others. I’m training for my second marathon, and I’ve spent the year thus far building my base prior to starting my training cycle in earnest. Any chance you might offer your thoughts on training in the summer and determining goal pace for a race that is mid to late fall given the likelihood that efforts will adjust with the changing temperatures?
Such a great topic…and tons of great advice. Thanks so much for this video and the inspiration. Could you share some of your favorite smoothie recipes? Or recommendations for healthy eating in general?
Is this a different person to Sage Canaday of Vo2maxproductions?
Another great video loaded with useful information. Thanks again!

I’m actually planning on running a half marathon in December this year. I’m really nervous about it, but i’m up for the challenge
I would love to but Im struggling so often with minor injuries:/
This is my favourite source of running info at the moment. I’ve built to from zero to 15-20 miles a week over a number of months, almost all v easy pace miles. I built up nice and slow because of past achilles and calf injuries. So far so good. Really enjoying tracking the improvement, and 5km time is coming down. Feeling good, thanks for the advice and great videos Sage!
Have you ever thought about running a marathon? Let me know in the comment what your thoughts are, what your fears are, and whether or not you’re going to take up the challenge in 2020!
Running Edinburgh marathon in 8 years wish me luck, Will be 60 want to do under 4 hours any hints on cross training would be appreciated
You have to run sub 7mins per mile the whole time during the marathon to get a 3HR marathon time. Whoa. Not gonna lie. That’s a heck of a feat. I would be happy running an average of 8 mins per mile, I don’t need to be the best, just fit enough to keep going. Thanks for the tips
my long runs are 4km so far lol
im doing halfmarathon in 2 months. im nowhere near ready. what should i do? i have the stamina but my legs hurt so much after a while
I’m 13 never ran a marathon but thought it would be cool to run 26 miles so that’s what I’m gonna do tomorrow wish me luck
I ran a half marathon on incline on my treadmill in 82 mins… almost tore my tendons! But I guess if I recover n repeat it only makes them stronger.
want to run a full marathon one day
How does running on the road effect the knees in comparison to running on soil?

Running the LA marathon soon
March 8 I can feel already I am not trained enough I am really scared
My right leg/ ankle is in pain when I run or walk I don’t know what to do
Should I just not run it? Or just try to do it?
But this pain kills me honestly
Great video. Having my first marathon this weekend. You helped a lot here
another great video, thank you. I’ve recently bought new adidas stability shoes which are a different model. since then I have pains to my right knee and can feel my right foot rolling over on the outer front edge which I think is the cause. the run ship fitted my after gait analysis and its so frustrating what can I do?
Hello, love your videos!!!! I was wondering if you could make a video on the best foods to fuel your runs?? What you eat before a big race, what to eat during training?? or even more “What I eat in a day” videos?? Thankyou!!! Run happy ♀️
Too much of rhetoric talk. It basically mentions food, posture for stability especially upper body strength to hold your spine in good shape throughout the run along with stretching, and training routine that their program is gonna offer.
I run for more than 10 years ALONE. I have never had motivation problems, I love to run and always meet my goals, why consider that running alone is not something positive?
A snippet about volume and health. There are some basics what coaches often apply to clients / runners. R1 A long run needs to be around 20miles. 28 to 35km.
R2 Your long run should not be longer than 30% of your total weekly volume
R3 20/20/20 =>20miles X 20times X 20weeks out from your taper
Result = You need around 100km a week of running, when training for a marathon.
In case runners want to assure that no negative health consequences will be suffered, they should be well prepared for a marathon.
Elite marathoners do no more than 5 successful marathons in 2 years. Very often it is only 3 or 4, but never over 5 in two years! For this reason a total preparation for a marathon, for a beginner, or sub elite / elite should be around 26weeks / 6months. Some B / C goals can spice up the training, like a 10k or a Half M race.
Cannot engage in this volume and that long? 6 months of 60k to 125k weeks / 100km on average / with 20 x 20mile long runs!
I am honest here! Tough s..t! Choose a shorter distance, choose a 5k or 10k! Enjoy the training, enjoy the community and stop thinking that the marathon is the ultimate distance. Being out and progressing is the ultimate goal! Bettering yourself smartly! Staying totally healthy and not compromising your ability to play with your future grand-children!
Pounding the pavement with an inefficient stride, being overweight, unhealthy or unfit are all a sure way of tearing a meniscus, stress fracturing a fibula or pulverise the hip-socket. It might not come today, or next year, but when you are 50 / 60 / 70. So yes, building up gradually to that minimum of 90 to 110km a week and holding on to that is quiet essential for a marathon prep, if we wanted to keep our heath.
Shocking the system, is a sure way of damaging something short and long term!
About shoe. For a 26 week marathon build up, I would not recommend to get only one good pair of shoes. Rather a variety of different shoes of 4 to 6 pairs. For instance 2 pairs of Hokas / 1 pair of NB / 1 pair of Nike. That will assure you, that one particular pair of shoe will rest for 72 hours, before you rerun in them. This will greatly increase the longevity of your sneakers!
Shoes are freckin’ cheap! You can get a super high end 2016 / 2017 models for like 25 to 30bucks. Loads of 2018 models are well under 100usd. Beginning of the year old colorways of 2019 shoes are also 20 / 30% off! This is part of your health actually!
Want to know more? Ask me anything!
My last marathon I crashed at mile 16. I let myself get caught up with people around me and I ran faster than my target pace. I hit the wall hard!!!
I hoping for a PR this weekend in Chicago
My approach is to do 10k four days a week. I do it without any timing expectations. I listen to my body on that day and push myself accordingly. Of course, being Indian, I do a lot of yoga. Yoga helps injury free training (no matter the kind of training). It also helps in breathing rhythms and that is crucial for any runner!
Running my first ever marathon in two weeks! Charlotte Marathon:)
WHAT IS THIS COURSE? IS FOR EVERYONE? WHERE IS IT HELD AND WHEN? DETAILS
Such a wonderful and detailed video on the subject.
Can u also please share the chart for strength traing exercises
I get tired driving for 26 miles. I’m never going to run a marathon. Why am I here?
Thank you for the tip! My goal is 5K right now but eventually I hope i get to do marathon run!
Hay canady, garmin fenix 5x vs suunto spartan ultra black? Who recomended?
Tips then explaining why your tip is a good idea will make the watcher more inclind to said tip
Marathon runners do not look like they’re in great shape at all, imho. In fact, the only advantage I can see is that they can outrun their opponent if they ever got into a fight.
This is spot on. This could be applied to pretty much ANY distance race you’re training for especially tempo sessions!
dude, your camera is amazing. What are you using? Also, did you run in Chiang Mai?
Hey, I’m looking into going to costa rica and since your quite the expert I was wondering, if I needed to get vaccination’s to go there, a couple websites recommended i do, but is it that necessary?
Wow, lots of good instructional videos lately! If you could pull off a podcast with Jurek and get deep into training talk together that would be epic!
I’ve been forced into taking just over a week off running due to a pretty bad bout of flu. I have now restarted again but am finding it really hard going my heart rate while running indicates that I’m having to work much harder for the same pace before illness. Any tips for getting back on track? How much longer until I get back to my pre-illness fitness?
I am doing my second Half-Ironman this year, but next year want to push to a full marathon and hopefully build towards a full Ironman.
Note to self:
Leafy green, spinach, kale, beetroot juice.
Train hard, Rest hard, active rest.
Good pair of shoes and compression socks.
Pinching the cup is my favorite race tip from Sage! I ran my first marathon a few weeks ago, and at every aid station I was thinking “Wow this is such a genius move for getting all the water into me!”
I started with 5 miles than 8 miles, 10 miles which i thought was a huge accomplisment. I then enlisted myself in a hapf marathon run and now im training for a marathon!!!!
I just wanna win my Cross country school race this Friday tomorrow is training
I am running a marathon in April(2019).I have 16 weeks to train. I believe I can do it. I’m running it with my brother and 2,000 other people. I used to run LOADS when I was a teen and I’m 26 now. I always wanted to run marathons since I was a teen. I used to run so so much. I believe I can get back to that. I am not unhealthy but I’m slightly(not fat or overweight) but I could lose a few pounds before the marathon(duh). I’m 155pounds and 5’6”. I used to be 120 pounds as a teen when I used to run so much. I love running. It’s probably my favorite exercise ever.
So glad I came across your channel! Thank you for the tips. Will make sure to implement them.
I’m training for London marathon 2019, which is in just over 9 weeks.
Any tips on how to recover form runners knee? I’ve been resting for two months now and I really wanna get back to it, but my knee still feels a little sensitive. I never actually felt pain just sensitivity ♀️
Just had an indoor meet yesterday! I ran a 6:08. I feel like I could have gotten under 6. I just had no idea how to pass people. Also did a trial half last week. Best experience ever! Running outside is awesome! Your videos are so helpful!
Christ your eyes and body move so much, i can’t focus on what you are saying.
I’m running the Charity Half Marathon! during the LA Marathon 2020!! Excited, Nervous, can’t wait to run from Hollywood to Santa Monica!
I started running from 2 months now.
The main reason was for weight loss and was 105kg and now 90. My target is 75-80, due to which I started attending marathons it’s so interesting and your videos are so helpful.
Good job
Keep going
hahha u ran the chiangmai muang marathon that year too? I did too…
Very honest, simple, inspiring, informative, educative speech thank you madam.
Hey man nice video. Im a decent ish runner do a lot of 1/2 marathons but ive never run a full one. i run 70 -100km a week but i honestly have to say, a few of my friends who do the same as me did a marathon last year and they have never been the same since. They hated it. We loved running and its really put them off. From never missing a park run or an interclub or a race we did the year before they just dont seem to want to run any more. For me, when i get to the end of a 1/2 i think theres no way i could do that again. Maybe its because my brain has banked in the distance, and it would adjust if it knew it had to go longer, but what have i got to watch out for? How much fuel should i take on during the race and hopw should i vary pace throughout the run. When i do 25km long runs i do them slowish but i do feel like enough is enough. Sorry this message is all over the place just cant sit through 90000 vids pooling in all the info!
My marthan 2019 starting.give a more tips 5mail only. I am from tamilnadu.i want to simple tips and more effective for body..how to strong legs..this is my first marathan

hey,if anyone else wants to discover how to run a marathon try Sarparder Running Expert Starter (should be on google have a look )? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my work buddy got great results with it.
Really insightful information based on your experience it will be great for many others, even seasoned runners, to watch this.
Thanks, Katie!
I noticed at 1:34 minutes a clip of starting line up at chiang mai marathon, are you in Thailand? And you’re a hoka oneone athlete, I read reviews on hokas, many reviews mentioned about how hoka have issues with heat and ventilation in long distance running could you share your experience in running in them. Cheers. Thank you so much for the vdo.
Nice video and everyone should take note about how to avoid hitting the wall (bonk!)
tip number 11 become 200 feet so you can take mile steps and finish in less than a minute
how about the shoes, socks, short, and singlet to be use? (“,)
My marathon is tomorrow, I haven’t trained anything and I am reading comments like “My marathon is 12 weeks ahead! I’m so excited!” I thought it wasn’t a big of a deal
Edit: It’s like 2 am so basically my marathon is in 6hrs today:0
“That’s because running 26.2 miles isn’t really all that fun.” Lol! Great video from the perspective of a regular person setting a realistic goal to finish a marathon. It has me thinking now about it, but maybe starting out with a 10K run, nothing too extreme. Great practical advice, too
Nothing shameful in having to walk-run in the second half, especially if it’s your first race
I won my first marathon, a Boston qualifier in 93 degrees and 2 10 minute hills, and I am not a runner, per se (serious cyclist, but 175# which is heavy for either sport). Don’t think you need to run for a year prior to beginning training if you have done plyometrics all your life or recently and are strong, don’t even think you have to start by running at all. I did a run to walk plan for a few weeks, started doing maybe 15 miles a week, got up to 40-close to 55 (too much), dialed it back to stay with intensity/speed, and only trained from day 1, for 7 months (but religiously, and good cardio/decent strength to start). You want to avoid a dumb seemingly minor injury, those will kill your goal completely. I did a run to walk, played conservatively with mileage (I jumped on a friends sub-3 hour plan and it was too much so I backed it off a bit). You can definitely meet your goals, but you need a strong, balanced body to start (planks, reverse planks, check out jesse diggins’ strength training challenge, very inspirational coach/just won gold as 1st US cross country skier to medal, bona-fide real deal of an athlete with the mental side that goes with). Take your time getting your body ready, no days off for core, and no missed workouts, ever (ICE, SNOW, 2 weeks never above 32 degrees F, whatever it takes).
But do back off and figure out any niggles, take a half tab of glucosomine chondroitin (standard recommendation by doctors in some countries according to a CRNP I just met with (doctor)). If you start getting slight knee pain, stretch daily 5-10, eat less sugar (inflamation?), drink (maybe raw) milk and (maybe raw) eggs and whey protein, kale is easy. I did jump off my truck and landed hard on my ball of my foot, it didn’t show up for a week or so, but doing something like that during high-mile training (30, 40, 50 miles) will do you in. Be careful. Get Mizuno Waveriders, there is a reason they are making edition number 22 (New Balance, Saucony, Nike, Reebok are all far, far inferior and will derail many who would otherwise succeed. You can’t be slamming your metatarsals due to crap shoe structure. The padding is similar, but the structure of the Mizuno wins. Find a good training plan that has you running 6 days with one or 2 very easy and very short days, only one longer day, proper periodization, plenty of speed work. And, go easy on the easy days, especially for the first month when you are learning how much this training will break down your body. Recovery is the key, but don’t push so hard you can’t recover.
I met with a sports doc yesterday who told me every 40 mile weeks are sufficient according to the latest and greatest, that’s what triggered me to write this, because it’s true, and the other thing is impact at least every other day will keep the cartilage in your hips, etc. from getting soft and leading to breakdown. Weekend warriors are definitely going to need joint replacements, gotta run 3.5 x weekly, every other day, or 4-6 times. Do your research, use your head. Keep it fun. Don’t run with people who make you run too slow (feels odd), because that is compromising your mechanics and joints to more slamming/impact. You can run circles around them if you have to run with them. Good luck.
I want to train for the LA marathon next year. I started with 5ks and I ran my first half marathon last September, it was the most difficult/amazing thing I’ve ever accomplished.
hello Harry, great running experience and nice video shooting! we work a lot with running vloggers who are telling great stories. Just want to know whether you have any good story coming soon? hope to work with you soon! mashiro from http://www.osakaowl.com
18 weeks to go for the Jakarta marathon. The last (and first) marathon was London in 2001. I ran about 3.50.
I had Gatorade at all the aid stations and I had no complaints. I somehow didn’t bonk. I also don’t think I pushed myself to 100% though, maybe only 90%, and it was very cool outside which was amazing.
I’m running the half marathon in NYC this Sunday and it’s my first ever marathon. I’m so nervous this really helps a lot thank you.
Great tips I have my first marathon in 2 weeks the Brighton marathon

People who eagerly wish to run a marathon or want to set a PR should try this marathon training courses “Zοrοtοn Axy” (Google it). I had been a reader of countless books on marathon training and a runner of two marathons and about 50 half marathons. I found the book motivating and reassuring. I had been able to get strategies that I did not know about..
If you`re preparing to run a marathon for the very first time, you should try this marathon training courses “Zοrοtοn Axy” (Google it). The book is filled with good assistance, suggestions from all those who have run one before, what to do as well as what NOT to do, as well as training daily schedules. This really is worth a shot..
I desperately want to avoid the first bit,for another 8 years, looking to do marathon under 4 hours when 60 yrs 2 years in and enjoying my excercise, getting fitter, did 20 miles on treadmill 9/4 km per hour that would be 4hr 27 mins
Does anyone else get cramps if they drink water or anything before or during a run?
Hi
I am affected heavy shin pain due to skipping and running. Pls confirm it will cause fracture.
What should I do next and pls help me to recover from this.
Totally agreed to the bachpan theory about running, but at that point of we were not 15 -20 kg excess. My anxiety is regarding people like me who are almost 20kg in excess, I would like to ask what would be the effect of running people like us.
I started training for my first marathon and it was cancelled due to COVID. I have maintained my training and will run it on my own! Your tips are very good, however I will say that I have been training in VIVO barefoot shoes and while its more difficult than more comfortable shoes, its very satisfying and really strengthens your feet and form! Also, ice baths baby!
Doing Bikram Yoga 3-4 times a week have allowed me to never have heavy legs, stiffness. Even after 33km runs. It’s simply amazing as a compliment to running. And it builds strength in legs and core!
What the fuck does she knows she isn’t even an elite marathon runner herself.
Hi! I have a thyroid from 25 yrs so i have body pain knee pain andbone density is also low, so i want to ask you can i run? I m 5o yrs old. Please reply
what kind of diet must we have to loose wait withoutfainting
thanks! i gone run in 1.5 months the ny marathon. i run every saturday 20k, and 2-3 times in a week 5-10k. it feels i can more but my legs gets stiff very fast… got some tips for prevent this? thanks alot!!!!
The distance will not be short or long with our slow or fast speed as you are quoting in the video. The thing about distance is it remains same no matter how fast ir slow you move to cover that distance. The time you take to cover the distance will be short or long depending on your speed.
Great tips for the marathon I started to train for on my channel! Thank You!
Hello,
I am currently looking to run my first ever 5k run. Any tips for a bigger guy like myself to train for this type of event? Thank you in advance!
Ahh I just agreed to a half marathon (and that is huge to me because I do not run.. like ever) but this is perfect! Thanks Alex, super inspiring! ❤️
Hi, Mam.. maximum kitna km walk kar sakte hai daily… plz answer.. Thanks
I will tell my one year old I must have a minimum of 8 hours sleep a night! I’m sure she’ll understand
Great Informative Video I ran my first Marathon and now training for the Next ✔️
Meeting my sub 4hr target and attaining my first marathon without injury were achievable because of this marathon training program “Zοrοtοn Axy” (Google it). The book gives tons of great info about training program, diet regime, technique, and so on. however the very useful page in the whole book is the training schedule which tells you how far to run on what day..
I ran my very first half-marathon this weekend and it was a-m-a-z-i-n-g! After getting my certificate of completion for this first milestone, I am definitely setting my sights on doing a full marathon next month.
I am super excited about this and I found your video incredibly helpful!
Thank you so much for providing the historical background-makes it so much more exciting and epic!-and for sharing footage of your first marathon.
Thank you so much!! And best of wishes on all your upcoming races too!
Sage don’t you think you need to improve your time in marathon and half marathon?
tip #2….Either Buy a very good one,or Run barefoot! Kenyans run barefoot a lot because they can’t afford those sneakers and THEY RAPE OUR BUTTHOLES IN RUNNING EVENTS! Love you Kenyans
Also important to tell beginners that some days, you will feel really tired, and think you are going backwards in fitness, but you really arent! All levels of athletes have bad days. Dont throw in the towel because of one.
Please do a video on your mindset during a race, and a possible difference between mindsets in longer distance races and shorter distance races. I have always struggled with my mindset during a race.
The second reason is why I am almost quoting distance running
Hi there. I have schuermann’s disease which is a spinal deformity that causes anterior wedging of my upper spine. Good because my lung capacity is incredible. I had a 30% higher lung capacity than anyone else in my company when I was in the military, but bad because I hold my weight wrong and my posture is bad. I know this is a long shot but I was wondering if you would give me some advice on how I can adapt my form to run properly with a spinal kyphosis. Thanks
Man ur so cool. Doing my best everyday in my marathon run trainings alone to be able to run that 26 miles as well
I am wanting to start running. I am currently overweight. I am working on my eating habits and losing weight. I am also walking a mile 3 times a week. Should I concentrate on losing some weight before I start trying to train myself to run or can I start now? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I was curious as to what some advice I’d get! Thanks!
Thank you! Im doing Houston on Sunday…yes im a little nervous but i cant wait. Excited…My goal is just to finish it… glad o found this video l. Very encouraging
My half marathon is coming up in about 2 months. These videos are SO helpful!! Thank you so much!
Hi Sage,
Training talk suggestion: maybe you could do a video about hydration and nutrition strategy during long training runs and/or races…how often to hydrate and how much, how often to take in calories, and maybe some hydration pack/gear suggestions. You have touched on these in many of your videos but I don’t think there is one dedicated to it
Running la marathon this Sunday and I’m nervous but thx u kinda calmed me down
I did my first 25k (15.5miles) today and in 4 months I want to do my first (half-) marathon race together with my mom who has been running marathons for years. Still unsure what I am going to sign up for, but I am excited! ❤️
Hi Sage, what shoes do you recommend for running primarily on pavement? So far I had the best experience with Hoka Cliftons. How many miles can a running shoe usually last?
Thanks a lot Sage! I´ll definitely use this groundbreaking cup-knowledge in Madrid this week!
I’ve been running for a lot of years (military) and never enjoyed it until I heard about the heart rate monitor. Wish I had one when I first started as a beginner and as a Soldier. My physical fitness scores (on runs) would have been better.
Hello..
Thanx for your video..today for the first time i tried 1 minute walk n 1 minute run..n it really worked..
Great videos Sage! I’m taking a road trip to Boston to watch the marathon and soak in the atmosphere of the event. Really cheering for you to qualify for the Olympic trials!:)
i dont understand if you can talk you re not running, you re walking, running means your breath a certain way which does nto allow to talk or you loose the regularity of it
A diabetic can run?nd if knees has a problem den wat about running?plz suggest nd rply to strengthen ligaments nd knees
Hi. I am Andrei from Romania and I love watching your work, is really amazing. In October a will run my first marathon and I am targeting a sub 3h 30 min. I run a 10k, half marathon and now it’s time for something new. I have one question: how is the chip working? I mean if I am far back at the start line, the chip will start by the time I will cross the starting point? Or when the first elite runners start, from that will be the time will count? I am afraid not losing too much time at the start. Thank you and good luck in the next races!
Good advice. I like it very much. Please visit here https://www.crunchbase.com/person/allyson-brunetti
Just today I was thinking about running a half marathon in April but I wasn’t sure that I can prepare. And on YouTube I saw you made a video about it!Thank you for the tips and the great videos on your channels!
Running the Chicago marathon in 20 days. First one ever. Wish me luck!
Is it more mentally challenging and the motivation to keep going is more difficult when running long distance in circles/mile loops than it is to run long distance where there is a finish line at the end?
Thanks for the tips Sage. It truly was a learning experience and I’ll learn from my mistakes with my first marathon.
thanks for the simple breakdown ma’am… you look amazing and have a curvy figure so I guess you’re an athlete as well… all the details were very coherently put…20 mins flew by in an instant watching you speak… all the best to all the runners in this thread… I’m running my first ever 10k in 20 days and I did go through plantar faschia and left knee injury in the past month… I’ll keep your points in mind in the next practice sessions…
such a thorough vid! i hope to run my first marathon once i have a 10k and half under my belt. it’s a great goal to work up to! i’d love to do sub-55 mins in this 10k.
its a shame all marathon videos are the same in the sense that they all say all the banal, ultra basic, things u must do. eating while running a marathon? seriously? doing long runs? wow, i had no idea that was important.
it’s a pleausure see everytime your videos.thanks my coach
I have about 20 ish days. to be able to run a mile in a half in 12 minutes or lower. I can run an 11:40 on the treadmill. I can run solid for about 7.5 to 8 mile an hour. any tips to be able to run pick up speed and endurance with in 20 days? I know there are plenty videos on ur. Channel. just trying to see If there is. any speedy way to do so. thank you!!
Congratulations on your performance in Hong Kong. Nothing to do with this video, I know. Thanks for all of your videos.

Thanks so much for this video! I’m actually training for my first marathon right now, I’m in week 6/20 and I’ll definitely keep all of your tips in mind! Most of them I’ve been following so far, but I haven’t yet gotten a sports massage. Maybe I’ll treat myself to one next month:)
Hey man, yeah totally training towards a half marathon at the moment. There’s another piece of interesting history about the Marathon. After the Athenians won the battle of Marathon, they found out that Athens was being invaded so the soldiers that were left ran the 25 miles back to Athens in full armor to defend the city of Athens. Pretty crazy what the human body is capable of with the right training. Thanks for the tips man. Great video.
I’m preparing for my first marathon I’m going to be 60 years old I have never run before my my life but I did the research and I found out all the dancers and I’m prepared to run a marathon on my 60th birthday
thanks alot for the advice here. My biggest distance was 26km and i am working hard to run my first marathon in hk the februray. Its crazy the hole training process. I am worried about the hidration and nutrition before the run and during the run. great tips here.
Listening to this the night before my husbands first marathon and laughing out asses off about how he hasn’t taken his training seriously he’s going to die
I really enjoyed this style of video. I’m still in high school so I’m not gonna be running a marathon until I’m out of college so I got some time. But could you do more videos like this, like training for 10Ks and 5Ks or even halfs
Many thanks for this video!!! Lots of good information and good vibes!
Hi sage, which spring gel type do you take/like most? I may be buying from amazon as it provides cheap shipping to my country.
As a reserved person, I don’t at all mind running solo all the time
I am now able to run 10 15 km on my good days. how should i train to be able to run a halfe marathon and full marathon? i have done a gastric bypass surgery in 2013 so i can not eat to much per meal.
Very great advise. I being start running seriously about 5 week now. 4 time a week straight and rest 3 day, sometime 2 day depends on injury. Its not easy. But I like to do it. Last week I do 4.5 miles a day. I feel pain and injury.
So I have about 1400 miles of base training typically run about 30-40 miles a week sometimes more. Currently I run my miles at around typically at around 10:30 11 min mile pace. I do tempos at 8:30 9:00 min pace. If I get serious and begin a training block you think I can get in sub 4hr marathon shape in 12 weeks?
Dude how old are you? You look really young but you did a 50 miler. You crazy dude
1000th view according to YouTube…
Then again… we all know YouTube can be a little weird with things like view count
