Maltitol and other sugar alcohols such as erythritol are commonly used in low-carb or “sugar-free” products such as candy and nutrition bars. These sweeteners are similar to sugar in terms of taste, texture, and interaction with other ingredients.Maltitol is a sugar alcohol and it is used in many products across the market that are advertised as “sugar-free”, but when it comes to keto-dieters and those on a low-carb diet, maltitol should be avoided since its glycemic index is almost as high as the glycemic index of table sugar.Final Thoughts Maltitol is a sugar alcohol that’s almost as sweet at sugar, but contains almost half the calories and has a lower The low-carb sweetener may be helpful for people with diabetes or on a low-carb diet when it’s up against table sugar, When looking at maltitol vs. stevia, for.The Best Keto-Friendly Sweeteners. The Truth Behind the Sweetener Maltitol is a sugar or even polylol. Sugar alcohols are carbs that partly resemble alcohol and sugar, but the body cannot absorb them, which makes them low-carb. Sugar alcohols happen in fruits and vegetable.Maltitol is characterized as a sugar alcohol, which, like sugar, is considered to be a carbohydrate. While sugar alcohols can naturally be found in fruits and vegetables, they can also be artificially manufactured, which is why maltitol is often found in packaged and processed foods.
Maltitol is a sugar alcohol commonly used as a low calorie alternative to table sugar in candies, baked goods, and other foods. It’s about 90% as sweet as sugar. How the keto diet works The.Maltitol is the most common type of sugar alcohol used in “sugar-free” candy, desserts, and low-carb products because it’s considerably less expensive than erythritol, xylitol, and other sugar alcohols.
Maltitol is not a good choice for people on low-carb diets.Maltitol is made from the hydrogenation of the corn-syrup by-product maltose. Because it behaves in cooking and production very much like pure sugar, it is very popular in commercial “sugar free” products like candy, desserts, and low-carb products.

What is maltitol? Maltitol is a low-calorie artificial sweetener. It is a carbohydrate, a sugar alcohol made of glucose and sorbitol [1].It is produced from maltose, which is derived from the natural starch (wheat, tapioca or corn), by using enzymes alphaand beta-amylase and pullulanaze [1,2-p.224]. I’ll add a PS to my post below. In the same week, I made my first “keto-friendly” ice cream, using erythritol. The sweet taste triggered such severe cravings, I ate a double portion! As a recovering sugar addict with a touchy metabolism, I think I will be better off avoiding all keto-friendly sweet “treats,” as they kick me out of ketosis and trigger “sugar blues.”
Hello. Thank you for all your amazing informative videos! I would love to know if there is a difference between Splenda packets which contain maltodextrin, dextrose and sucralose VS. Splenda zero which is just sucralose? Do these affect blood sugar differently?
It’s so funny that I see this video, 2 days after I find Taryn’s recipe for browned butter donuts with a link to this sweetener recipe. I made her caramel using this mix. Even my non-keto 5 year old devoured the caramel made with it.
Thank you for putting this recipe out for more to experience.
don’t use inulin for cooking, after you heat it up it’s processed as fructose by your body so is not keto friendly. Only use it for anything that has not been heat it up.
I’m finding “sweet replacement” products, and bars have maltitol syrup. After an hour or so it does a real job on my stomach, I cannot tolerate it. Others I know can handle it fine. For me it’s stevia and/or erythritol.
Potential side effects linked to stevia consumption include:
Kidney damage….
Gastrointestinal symptoms….
Allergic reaction….
Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar….
Low blood pressure….
Endocrine disruption.
Thank you Dr Nick, this has been very helpful. I’ve been using the brand Lacanto which is a blend of monk fruit and erythritol.
Try to find birch benders syrup in pancake syrup section, monk fruit sweetened
Could you use this in place of Swerve Confectioners Sugar Substitute, if you blend it long enough to get powdery?
Thank you for the clarification. Is there a sugar based on coconuts?
I have a question. I found this statement on a website page with regard to the calculating of net carbs. “Because sugar alcohols have less effect on blood sugar levels compared to standard sugar, this is one of the reasons why some experts suggest to subtract sugar alcohols amount completely from the total carbs to get your net carb.”
Do you think this is a valid process to calculate net carbs? I see companies using it to post lower net carbs stats on their products. This doesn’t seem right to me. How can sugar alcohols reduce the overall carbs? You are still ingesting those sugar alcohol carbs into your body…. Me so confused.
it is very important to mention in high voice that all sweeteners, including stevia and the polyols, are not safe to use on long term. They are also dangerous to use in daily basis, including stevia, as said. We definitely don’t know the effects they cause in our body in general.
Very important to check on the stevia ingredients. If it has Maltodextrin, then throw it out as it spikes blood sugar levels (glycemic index) to 136* in some extreme cases.
I thought you should subtract the fiber and the sugar alcohol to get the net carbs?
I’m new to you tube and every time I watch the op’s vids a learn so much and knowledge is power in the diet world. And reading the comments makes me feel I’m not alone in this quest for losing fat.
I just think about how alcohol affects the liver, and keep in mind that non-sugar sweeteners such as erythritol (sp?), xylitol, and stevia (steviol) are actually sugar-alcohols… sometimes a little bit of sugar/carbs is better, if not skipping sweeteners altogether.
Thank you Dr. Nick for providing all this interesting information. It is very helpful! God bless you!
This reminds me that too much of a good stuff is not really good.
Great video with well-researched and well-presented information. Thank you.
Thank you! Question: how to keep the balance of gamma aminobutyric acid and glutamate not only in the ketogenic diet?
Do you know anything about splenda? Is it something that you would take ot replace for sugar.
I’ve been using liquid sucralose and I think it is preventing me from getting back in ketosis. Hearing the connection between sucralose and Alzheimer’s disease, I’m going to have to quit the liquid sucralose and go back to my original intention starting keto: to kick my sugar addiction. Sucralose is not helping me do that.
I am not doing keto but I am trying to reduce carbs and sugar, is it pointless to mix a sugar alcohol and a natural sugar? I want to reduce the amount of sugar I’m consuming but if I only use a sugar alcohol on its own I will get abdominal pain.
Definitely good info. I use either Stevia or Erythritol. I have not tried monk fruit. I have tried the Truvia and Pyure. I tend to either do pure Stevia or Erythritol. I was on vacation and yes I did use Splenda because it was where the sweeteners were. Getting coffee out etc.. It was either sugar, Equal or Splenda. I chose Splenda.
Great info! Thanks. Do you know anything about Bocha Sweet, made from kabocha pumpkins? It sounds great but I’ve not found good independent reviews.
Hi Dr. Nick! Yesterday was my first day doing KETO, I started out dirty but as I watched your videos cleaned it up as i went through my day. My last meal was around 7pm. This morning i checked my sugar and it was sky high!! 259. Does it take some time for my body to flush out sugars?
After watching this i went and bought a product called Zing.. It is Stevia. Also it says “Suitable for people with diabetes” Ingredients say, first is Organic Dextrose, 2nd is Stevia.. So my question is on the Dextrose.. I just started the Keto and my girlfriend and step daughter are diabetics. Other videos say dextrose is bad. Is this bad? Is this a bad product? Why would they mix these 2 ingredients. I ask you because you seem to be more intelligent.
Need help!!! Can I drink my rapid fire keto coffee mixed with my collagen keto shake during fast??? I mix the two with unsweetened almond milk. I stop eating around 6/7pm then drink my mix in the morning but I don’t eat any food until 12/1pm?? Thank you in advance!! Jeanine
So glad I found your channel today, it is informative and so funny. I have been doing keto for a few months now, and I think it is easier when you first start out to just eat veggies and meats. Then add cheese. Then after a month or so, add the sweet treats. They are a lot better by then. lol I’m gonna eat a no bake macadamia nut cookie. Have a blessed day:)
Maltitol is fine and does not kick you out of KETO. I’ve used it for months and remained in Keto. I’m 47. Not young, but Maltitol is one of the best bets if you like sugar free chocolate.
What about maltodextrin? Do any of these contain that filler I hear that is a big no no!
How an idiot video Beef has 0 gi, but triggers insulin more than pasta
Dr Berg what about coconut sugar and maple syrup? Those good substitutes?
I use sorbitol for weight loss. Makes me have stomach issues and I use it in a similar way to laxatives. I know this is bad but it’s better than throwing up which I used to do.
I know this is an older video, but thank you for going so in-depth on these. With so many people new to keto on facebook, the question comes up a lot.
You have a new subscriber Dr. Nick. Thank you so much for this video. Very helpful.
Excuse me for asking, I’m completely new to the world of the Keto diet. I have date sugar, which I bought because I read that its glycemic index is very low. I had bought it long before I heard about Keto. Can I use it or is it not recommended for Keto lifestyle? I’m interested in Keto for general health benefits, not because I have to lose weight. I’m at my proper weight.
Great info Dr.
I have a question about carnivore diet. I am currently on keto for over 3 years and doing great. But I found out about the carnivore diet and very interested in doing it.
Could you do a video on keto vs carnivore and what are your thoughts on carnivore?
Thank you and looking forward to seeing it.
This is my favourite keto channel so far although headbangers kitchen is a close first. I really dont like any of the sweeteners stevia just tastes bitter but I’m going to try this as I have all the sweeteners in my pantry as I have tried them all and never found any I really like so great video I will let you know how it goes ♥️
Out of the good sweeteners on the right (after watching this video, i bought and tried them all); most don’t give you that sugary taste. they sweeten but very mild. Which suggests if youre a sweet tooth, you will need to add large amounts of those sweeteners to taste a difference, which can be costly (esp if youre making a pastry). Stevia on its own has a weird aftertaste… However mixing stevia with monk fruit or erythritol is the best tasting, sweeter and better pound per pound compared to the others. I find the Truvia (Stevia+erythritol) and Whole Earth (stevia+MonkFruit) are the best on amazon. let me know your combinations or thoughts.
Maltitol is only 10 points lower than table sugar?
You can’t make this up. These companies are just finding different ways to keep our blood sugars sky high.
I don’t want it as a crutch I want it because I’m bored. I’m tired of eating the same stuff all the time. I think it would be fun to have a little dessert once in awhile.
In general sounds like if it’s man made tampered with best to avoid.
Thank you for that pep talk man I’m over here like thinking about cheating just trying out sugar free Keto desserts
Very helpful video, I was really looking for this information and Dr Nick nailed it.
You didn’t talk about sorbitol!? Good or Bad?? since GI is not always the indicator for the effect on Insulin and insulin resistance
I know this is a old post but I do have a question for you Dr. Berg or any one who knows the answer. Do you know if consuming any type of sugar alcohol by type 1 diabetes makes their body to create ketones inside the blood or not!!! My son is type 1 with great blood sugar control not high mostly but recently I noticed his blood and urine are showing sign of ketones (type 1) sometimes trace sometimes moderate moderation on 100 to 120 blood glucose range which is very unusual to me and even to his doctor….low blood sugar (well controlled) about 70 to 100 gram carb intake daily and ketones???? Could that be from sugar alcohol that is inside of his snacks such as cookies or ice creams( keto ice cream 3 gram carb )!!! He does not have any cold or flu, he is not dehydrated he has a low normal blood sugar he is on low carb but not extremely low (60 to 100 or even 100 gram carbd) he is 10 yr old and sometimes specially during night time ketones!!!!!!!! Why is that???Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I do okay on stevia, but I only use it when I’m trying to wean myself off sugar. Today I found and impulse bought “sugar free” peanut butter cups at Walgreen when I was picking up some printer paper. Ironically when going to the pharmacy the temptation to binge on sugar is high. The very place that supposed to give you medicine to heal displays obscene amounts of oversized bags of chocolate at very low prices. Anyway these peanut butter cups have maltitol in them, taste a LOT like sugar and made me sick. That’s why I searched maltitol and dr berg on youtube. Now I know. Thanks Dr. Berg. Maybe next time I can avoid the temptation. I honestly just avoid non health-food stores as much as possible. Walgreen is particularly obscene though, seriously. The one in San Mateo is so upsetting to me I won’t go there anymore.
Thanks. This video answers some questions I had after a previous video. Keep up the great work!
I’m a maple producer. Can you give us your comments about maple syrup? Am I producing a bad product?
Even if the GI is low, the sweet taste alone triggers me and I will binge. Is this just happening with me? Even with Stevia, Monk Fruit, etc.
Man. I used to really like this channel until you passed off some misinformation about some stuff here. You cannot call Splenda Sucralose. Pure sucralose does not cause a blood glucose response. I’ve been doing this for a long time and I’m 40 + pounds down. It isn’t about needing the sweet treats. It’s about understanding that your life is something to be enjoyed every step of the way. These things were made to enhance your keto diet. I personally say test it. Keep track of your ketone levels while you have these. Enjoy your diet. Get creative. I like what you’re doing here, sure. But certain things in life are meant to be enjoyed.
Thank you bruh!! This vid is exactly the info i have been searching for. Alot keto channels talk about the science of this subs but dont talk about the taste and thats what this keto chick needed to know, so thanks
Thanks Doc found that really valuable what kind of fermentative properties do these alcohol surgars have in a aqueous solution and inoculated with a bacterial culture? We looking at goodtimes or a trip to the emergency room to have my stomach pumped?
I recently read on a Keto recipe to use Botcha sweetener, which is made from the Kobucha squash. I recently purchased some through Amazon and it tastes just like sugar, but has less grams of carbs than Monk fruit. What do you think? Thanks for all your useful information.
Dr Nick,
Could you do a video on beef tallow please?
Thank you
Watch out for the maltodextrin in a lot of the powdered sweeteners! I like Whole Earth as it is a great mix of all 3, (stevia, monk fruit and erythritol). Also I like Lakanto monk fruit sweetener. Hey, cool beverage soft drinks now is Zevia check them out. Thanks for your videos
Your just telling the truth…some healthy food is discussting.
Very informative, but stevia has a high rate of allergic response in people and can cause blistering of the mouth and GI bleeding in sensitive folks, it kind of sounds like a Stevens-Johnson response. So, if anyone experiences blisters in the mouth using stevia, they need to stop because it could become a life threatening situation.
I think a good combination is half erythretol half stevia….
Hi dr Berg. I recently started paying attention to food ingredients and realized how many food have dextrose but still say zero carbs. I noticed this in a pack of pepeoni. How is this possible, how can the label say zero carbs when the product has sugar in it?
I’ve been using stevia for years. Everybody says it is hundreds times sweeter than sugar. It is untrue. I use the same amount of stevia in my coffee as sugar.
After 9 months of keto I’ve tried baking sweets with almond flour & erythritol and I’m ready to give up. It feels like it’s not even worth the effort. That “cooling” taste is not good. I think I’ll just eat more bacon
That was a very informative video, but my goodness: “Rumbly Tumbly”
Thank you!!! I have been scouring the internet for the perfect keto sweetener that doesn’t leave an aftertaste. I personally prefer Splenda and Equal but have since learned they are not good for me.
Be careful of buying stevia that has chemical sweeteners added in. Some do and you wouldn’t know. Read ingredients always. Pyure has a baking blend that does have a fake sweetener so probably best to stay away from that one. Try Trim Healthy Mama Gentle Sweet or Super Sweet Blend. Gentle Sweet is most like sugar than anything I’ve ever tried. It does have xylitol. It doesn’t hurt my tummy unless I over eat with it. Super Sweet has erythritol and is twice as sweet as the Gentle.
I’m trying to find something on coconut sugar for keto I put this in my coffee but I dont use it other than that. If you know something about coconut sugar please share. Thanks for the wonderful videos
Thank you Dr. Nick! I watch every single video. You do inspire and motivate indeed. And I dropped my cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides thanks to your healthy keto plan. Greetings from Poland!
Thank you for this information. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a couple months ago. I’m looking at the Keto diet to stay healthy. I don’t know a lot about it, but I like what I’ve heard so far. Your videos are very informative. I learned a lot about sweeteners thanks to you. Thank you for helping people like me know how to make the right choices for a healthy life style. Keep the videos coming.
Where is your reference that says sucralose causes an insulin response and spikes blood glucose? I think you were lazy on validating your sources. You’re usually better than this.
For the record, it’s completely wrong science to test any sweetner blended with things like maltodextrin, etc and say that the results are in any way related to that sweetner as you seem to have done given how you use Splenda and sucralose interchangeably. They aren’t the same at all. Just read the ingredients lable and buy the pure stuff. Easy peasy.
I imagine few of thrse have laxative effect like Xylitol has.
Hey can u tell me about splenda
I m doing Keto for a week did not loose wieght is it because of splenda
I don’t like stevia
What is your opinion regarding Sodium cyclamate? Since most of the artificial sweeteners in Europe are made of Sodium cyclamate as well as aspartame and saccharine.
great vid!.covered most of my questions….great info.
many thx for posting
I’ve been doing this myself for a few yrs now but so nice to see an actual recipe for it! Thanks!
The best that I’ve had to date is Swerve, but I’d like to try that syrup, if I can find it.
Thanks for the information. I eliminated sweets from my diet. I went to the doctor and my a1c was up. I walk or run 5 miles daily and still have a lil pooch. After watching this video I found that the sugar free powders I added to my water raised my blood sugar drastically and has been affecting my body as if I had eaten regular sugar.
Dr. Berg, can you please review Caryota syrup or Caryota jaggery? can it be considered a good sugar alternative?
Great information. Thank you. I’d be interested in what others consider favorites.
Nice movie. However, you can learn about diet much more. Just google for ‘WooPep’.
Nice, thanks for the info. Though almost all of these videos/articles/advices keep forgetting and putting aside the pleasure/enjoyment factor. Google for the virtues of balance and moderation. Though these are the hardest to achieve.
I found a combo of Stevia and Monk Fruit in the raw. Individual packets. Hopefully they are okay. I stay in ketosis so….
Erythritol…good or bad? I came across this ingredient in a beverage (bai).
Interesting that Trader Joe’s Sugar Free Simply Lite chocolate bars have 11grms of Maltitol and claim that it will have zero effect on glucose or insulin levels!
Thowing away some sugar free cookies. 8 grams of moltitol per cookie!
I know it was maltitol before I even opened the video. It converts 75% into fructose, therefore it is lower than sugar. But still very high.
What’s worse, sweetening my coffee with condensed milk or using sweet and low?
Sugar alcohols laxative effect is a warning on some sugar free candies=but everything has a use! Two or three sugar free turtles and a couple hours later old constipated carnivore keto finds help!
MAL-titol. “Mal” means bad so anything with that, I stay away from it. Erythritol makes me feel yucky if I have too much of it too.
Stevia and truvia are disgusting!! Avoid unless you like a nasty after taste that laaaassssts for ever
Why is mannitol not recommended if it so low in spiking blood sugars?
I dont know any science except that these artificial sweeteners cause me to be more hungry and harder to reach satiety
Thank you know now what to buy. How about Truvia? I just bought little packets for my purse, probably use it 2 times a week. 1 packet
how long would you say it takes for the regular daily use of equal and or splenda to develop tumors in an individual?
I’ve been inadvertently consuming sucralose in my sugar free coffees (I did not know sucralose was splenda). I’m trying to lose weight and have thyroid issues. Will the sucralose hinder my weight loss? And which sweetener is best for PCOS???
Thomas, may I suggest this video by UCSF panel on stevia, which mentions that Stevia (rep a) causes insulin spikes, just as glucose does. https://youtu.be/XM0vyUUvO9E (at the 40 minute mark): “increased blood sugar and increased insulin resistance and is dangerous to diabetics” Not suitable for keto!!!
I enjoy Whole Earth sweetener which is a blend of monk fruit and stevia. Works great in my Keto cheesecake!
I lost 32lb in two months just from switching from regular soda to diet soda. I did cut back on cookies, candy, etc… But, no change in my exercise plan at all. And I put a few pounds of muscle on during those two months. I have no idea if it messed with my gut bacteria because I was taking Metamucil every morning.
Thank you for this one I have been trying to research on my own but who do you believe? When I scan Swerv though it states it has 2 net carbs per pack. Is that true?
You should have said original Splenda because Splenda Naturals is a mix of stevia and erythritol & it’s the best tasting in my opinion
I hate that he didn’t cover allulose. Id really like to know where he lines up on that one.
I used a sweetener mix of stevia and maltitol for 6 months in keto iam in ketosis i lost 50 kilos weight and my Hba1c decreased from 10.8 to 5.1
My FBS is from 70-80
I really appreciate your candour. I am new to keto and while I do not believe I have a sweet tooth I did actually expect a like for like exchange.
I really appreciate you pointing out that an adjustment period is required. I have found sugar cravings but for the most part I prefer savoury flavours so I’m doing okay.
It is good to know I can eat certain sweet foods if necessary but realistically to expect them to taste different.
If you were beside me I’d hug you. But cyber . I really appreciate the information.
I just read the label on my bottle of sugar free pancake syrup. The first ingredient is water followed by sorbitol.
Dr, here the GI for MALTITOL is 52, but in your other clip, it is shown only 35… Please correct for the right GI…
New subscriber from germany here! I am new to keto and getting started is Not easy for me. I was on a high carb, low fat, plant based diet and was loosing weight but couldnt do it for long since I was falling back into old habbits, such as snacking on cheese and meat. The craving for fat was too strong. But now on keto I am craving carbs AF. I hope this goes away!!
Best wishes and thumbs up for the content! Thanx
Erythritol ftw. I think you have to consume rather large quantities of it to get gastric problems. And you would never have that much sweet food on keto now, would you??!
New to keto in the uk so thank you because we haven’t got much of nothing here and my untrained tongue be struggling!
STEVIA leaves a really nasty aftertaste in the back of my throat for a couple of hours. So far, coconut flower sugar is working well in my morning cup of green tea, but, is it the culprit that has been causing my constipation lately???

The only chocolate without sugar I found contains maltitol, and all sweets for diabetes in the market contain it.
there are no keto sweeteners, there all poisons, produce insulin resistance or keep you hooked on sweets like a drug. go cold turkey its the only way.
Omg I thought sucralose was okay. Been using torani syrups and they contain sucralose
I don”t crave sweets but I have a hard time eating enough fat so I wanted to make fat bombs. I really don’t like coconut and it seemed like every recipe uses primarily coconut oil so I was bummed out for a while, but I just thought about it earlier. I could use delicious Kerrygold butter instead! I googled it and sure enough found recipes using butter, spices, and sweeteners. So now I’m trying to figure out what sweetener to use, but I still don’t crave sweet so I wouldn’t need much… or maybe none at all? I just don’t know how tasty a, for example, cube of butter blended with cinnamon and vanilla and nothing else would really be. Any advice would be wonderful. Also, yes I drink butter in my coffee and tea but I wanted something I can prep in batches so I don’t have to keep cleaning my immersion blender 3+ times a day!
Why are they using the bad ones in Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi?
I just realized that i have been eating think thin protein bars because they said that they have 0g of sugar but 21 grams of sugar alcohol. Then when i heard you talking about maltitol and should avoid it, i looked at the ingredients of the protein bar and they have maltitol in them. Can u please do a video on some of the best protein bars to eat and what to look out for.
TIM Talks Cooking, Thank you so so much for this, it is sorely needed within my household. Again, Tim, thanks so much, just discovered you, will be back!!!
been looking for a sweetner but did not know which one to get so going to opt for inulin l have seen this in a ingredient list to make keto bread so will have a few uses as i am new to the keto diet all information greatly received thank you again doc for a well presented video
In your other video…The Worst Sugar Alcohol for Weight Loss…you have Erythritol listed as 0 glycemic index??
I absolutely love your personality and your videos!
So glad I found your channel and I can’t wait to make this sugar recipe as I am one of those who has not found an alternative yet that I like
I used Stevia in a recipe, and thought is was not good. I then bought Truvia. I liked it much better. Thanks much Tim
Hey! Quick question. I’ve being Keto consistently for about 3 weeks now. Not losing a ton of weight (I haven’t worked out at all) but I am losing some and definitely inches. Loooove Keto and IF…BUTTTTT….I’m at OMAD but honestly, I don’t really have a desire to eat for a day, sometimes. I feel great! This is the best I’ve ever felt in my life. What are your thoughts on that?
Why are you then using Joseph’s sugar free maple syrup in your recipes in the book?
Anything with xylitol (especially chewing gum) is out of the question for me.
I’m so sorry for off topic, I really need an advise. I’ve got yellow tongue, my doctor said that might be a liver disease sign, and that I shouldn’t eat that much fat…. But I’m trying to do keto, Im trying to do it clean, not only bacon&cheese, but I’m only a beginner. I do clean my mouths on regular basis, and I haven’t had something like that before keto. Have You or maybe some pf your patience experienced something similar? I would be really grateful for any response
Good points. Love your humor. I suspect i will never find a low carb sweetener I like. They all have a yucky taste and don’t seen sweet enough. Thanks.
I use nasal spray Rinofluimucil that contains Sorbitol. Maybe smb know if it can damage ketosis?
Do you know anything about a product called ” just like sugar “?
I’ve started testing my glucose with any new sweetener’s we are all so different. Was using Xylitol for a whole year, until I decided to check. Wow it was really raising it up, so I stick with stevia monk fruit. Going to give that Yacon Syrup a try.!
Why do you advocate that “keto-friendly” maple syrup, especially when they use Maltitol? Before recommending, I think it would be beneficial to do what Keto Connect did…they actually tried each one and then tested their blood glucose. I am not a fan of using sweeteners when in keto. People need to learn to eat food in the state it is given. sweeteners are empty calories and do nothing to contribute to health. That being said, Monkfruit is probably the best. Stevia has a nasty aftertaste, especially when cooked. Using sweeteners doesn’t help people over come cravings any more than methodone helps someone quit heroin. Just sayn
Otherwise, you’re one of my heroes.
I would like to see you deal with epigenetics and outside influences. I know you speak a little about stress but there are other super important factors too what about quantum energy fields and what lies “behind the molecules” and directs them to begin with? Sure, this is controversial, but so is Keto. Most idiotic doctors are still trying to crucify saturated fats. Who cares what they think? People will continue killing themselves by taking meds and listening to really bad and expensive medical advice. Go to the source!
I only have here and then dates, maple syrup or coconut sugar.
I find that stevie mixes great with creamy type liquids and fat. It’s great. Making a stevie horchata is fantastic with stevie or eggnog
Hello
On your website says no alcohol for keto diet
But many other websites states that pure spirits whiskey brandy tequila vodka are all zero carb and fine on keto diet
Can you please comment
Add frozen strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries, ice cubes, almond milk and all natural zero carb monk fruit sweetener (Almost indistinguishable from regular granulated sugar) and it will satisfy any sweetooth cravings making a giant delicious sweet berry smoothie. They had a bag at Jewel for 10 bucks but you can get it for 5 dollars or so online. I also bought a bag of peanut butter powder sweetened with monk fruit, not as sweet but a great additive for baking or whatever creative mood you are in, this literally saved me from wasting my ketosis flu and the pounds are dropping off fairly fast. ✌❤
How about coconut sugar, I like it and use it occasionally..
bullshit, “typically causing diarrhea at a daily consumption above about 90 g”, so u have to eat about 0,5 kg of cookies to get diarrhea
Would those could cause the Keto rach? Cuz come people mention it and now I feel erythritol what I’m using is causing ichtyness
thomas this video explains all the issues caused by artificial sweeteners but yet you greent detox has a lot of sucralose in it. please explain this.
also it have alot smalller glicemic index so its not like sugar, or ur “natural sweeteners” which is just glucose from fruit, instead of sugar which has sugar too
Is Inulin considered a natural sweetener? How if that for Keto?
I only use it in my morning coffee. I have all 3 Eryithritol, Stevia (Truvia), and A Stevia / Monk Fruit blend. I alternate between all 3. Would alternating slow down the body’s adaption to all 3, confuse it enough to not adapt, or make the body adapt to all 3 around the same time? Hmmm…Not that I’m actually worried about it as I don’t use the stuff all day but it would make for a good scientific study.
Can i use 1 sachet of “SWEET’N LOW”
zero calorie sugar everyday on ketosis?Plz reply somebody.. Thanks
I, too, find that a mixture of different sweeteners works best. More well-rounded.
One other one that seems to be taking off is Bocha Sweet, made from kabocha, which is from pumpkin. It literally tastes like sugar, is 0 glycemic, and is one sweetener that will keep keto ice cream scoopable from the freezer without need of a jackhammer. The big (and I do mean big) downside is the gastric distress. Holy cow, it doesn’t take much to have the laxative effect! That’s a bummer because it is the only sweetener out there that literally tastes like sugar.
I use Monk Fruit in my coffee and its delish… and its 0 carbs on my app.
Maybe that’s why I’m on plateau, for using too much erithritol and stevia mix, every day….
I’ll make the change immediately!
Great help with what to and not to use. Thanks for all you do. I just started using Pyure so far better than some of the other no after taste but I have found a little gut discomfort could I be using to much would it help to cut back a little?
even beans has a low gi they trigger insulin more than brown rice
The glycemic index picture seems to be way off for some (if not many) items. Looks to me like it was randomly generated. Look at the onion. Really? 75? Couple rows up Onions 10, but one Onion 75:D And Snack section is just too generic, what if I eat one pizza with onion topping and another one with onions topping?:D
Thank you Dr. Nick.
I use Xylitol. It has less of an after taste, and tastes closest to real sugar. I can deal with the stomach issues. I don’t care for the cooling effect of erythritol, and stevia leaves a very nasty bitter taste. I haven’t tried Monk fruit, I’m a little worried about an after taste.
I think I will try this and hopefully it will work for me because the other mixtures have not. They either make me feel bloated or have that aftertaste. I just subscribed. Thanks for the info
I’ve been trying to find the “best” sugar alternative lately. Thomas stresses the use of monk fruit as being safe, with natural stevia also fairly safe (but I assume not in long term). I am interested in the flavor drops for water. I found one called Water Drops that come in a variety of flavors. It is sweetened with pure stevia and not much else, but does have the ingredient “vegetable glycerin”. It is derived from plant oils (coconut, palm, soy). I’m thinking this might not be so good. Does anyone else know?
I use Sucralose (not splenda, the liquid kind that is zero carb and zero calorie mixed with Erythritol when I bake. I love Sucralose. I only get bloated when using erythritol after 3 or 4 cookies, brownies etc if eaten all at once. Monk fruit sounds and tastes nasty
A no added sugar dark chocolate here in Uk with 70 cocoa and a nice taste and inexpensive uses malitol but I guess it’s cheaper sweetener and the NAS is a marketing gimmick to fool the I’ll informed dieter.
You are an amazing person who has inspired me to make some significant changes. I am now changing over to the Keto Diet and it has only been a 5 days and I already feel better. I have a horrible sugar addiction and I found myself literally living on it. After watching your videos I am now very informed about the Keto Diet and I went to the store and bought all the good fats, carbs and proteins. Now I need to go get some coconut flour so I can make those famous pancakes of yours. The world needs more people like you to inspire and motivate!!! P.S. you have a beautiful family!
Thank you Thomas! I have been low carb for many years, and I have been using lots of Stevia daily since 2007. I do lose the weight but my sweet tooth has never gone away. I am going to start using Monk fruit, but much less, only one teaspoon in my morning coffee. Also I will count the carbs from monk fruit into my daily carb intake. I never realized until very recently that stevia also has carbs.
I use stevia all the time, just to be safe I don’t try anything I don’t know. Thank you for this video I love the way you explain things. (simple and clear) English is my second language and I dont have problem understanding you. You are awesome Dr. Nick.
I love xylitol! Its better for your teeth, it’s used in toothpaste! Unlike sugar, which rotts your teeth
Man I have had a huge sweet tooth all my life. Keto has reduced that…not eliminated it but i actually just do t crave it…i still like the flavour!
Thomas!!! I purchased the Lakanto monkfruit with erithrytol based on your recommendation!!! I thought erithrytol was pretty safe…
I have tried Stevia and Monk Fruit in my cup of morning coffee and they both just taste bitter to me. Splenda tastes sweet, but I will not use it as it is not considered a healthy way to lose weight.
Can I substitute monk fruit or stevia to swerve confectioner?
I work out everyday. Lifting heavyweights. I guess it’s ok to eat 2 donuts once in blue moon.
Here is the facts on Swerve. Made from corn.
“ It’s found naturally in small amounts in some fruits and vegetables. However, the erythritol in Swerve Sweetener is created by fermenting glucose from non-GMO corn with Moniliella pollinis, a yeast-like fungus (1). “
Hi again! Really loving the videos you put out, they’re very informative, easy going and fun! I started Keto primarily in support of my wife who had been struggling to find a “diet” that actually worked. We are both delighted with the results so far. Having just watched the video on the best artificial sweeteners, you gave a thumbs up to “Truvia”. We have this in the U.K in our supermarkets in what looks like identical packaging to the one in the video. Our nutritional labelling however differs slightly from yours in the States. On the label it states that it has 99g of carbohydrate per 100g but of this 0g sugars. We are told that on Keto carbs are the enemy, this has somewhat confused me. Can you shed any light on this for me. Thanks in advance-
Dave.
Ps I have your chia pudding every morning, it’s amazing.
DR BERG SHOULD GET A YOUTUBE AWARD FOR BEST PRESERVING PEOPLES TIME THE BEST! HE GETS STRAIGHT TO THE POUNT INSPIRING MY TIME TO CHECK OUT MANY MORE VIDEOS IN HALF THE TIME! He’s a pro at that and I find I have ZERO tolerance for all the YAPPING and ranting other youtubers do. No offense. But at my age I come to get the DEETS not your life story or the story your neighbor told you. Must be due to the ADHD generation. Shrugs
man i wasdrinking a sugar free sweetner packet that had malidextron in it! didn’t even realize. gotta read my labels more
All the powdered sugar substitutes contain dextrose or maltodextrin and that seems to cause a glucose rise. I switched to liquid splenda and saccharine because there is no dextrose. The brain cell loss is disturbing.
1. Stevia
2. Erythritol
3. Monk Fruit
4. Yacon Syrup
5. Inulin
6. Xylitol
7. Truvia
8. Swerve
9. Pyure
I’ve been using sweet-N-low for the past 20+ years…or was it 25? Can’t really remember.
Can you make a video of a few different healthy fat bombs. I am having trouble of keeping up with fat during the day. You can only eat so many avocados and coconut. It seems like the only thing I find is really unhealthy fat bombs. I hate the taste of ghee and I hate putting all the fat in my coffee I think it tastes gross. A few ideas would be nice. Thanks!
What an awesome tutorial! I’m just now starting my Keto lifestyle change and it’s so confusing on the sweeteners.
I use stevia, monkfruit, Erytritol. ❤️ thank you for you searching
One thing which has been really important to me, is the effect of artificial sweeteners on people who are seriously insulin resistant. ANY sweetener, natural or not, can cause some glucose response for people like me, and pretty much halt any weight loss, even though we might still technically be in ketosis. I had to completely eliminate ALL sweets from my diet before being able to balance myself and begin losing weight.
I lost a number of months where I could have been losing weight, but I was using sweeteners like splenda, but I didn’t know that sweeteners, even artificial ones might be spiking my blood glucose to the point where they were prohibiting weight loss for me.
Monk Fruit wins hands down. No after taste. Behaves like sugar. All natural. Not made from corn like most of the others. Get it at Amazon.

Dr Berg, here GI is 35 for MALTITOL whereas in your other video, same was shown 52…please correct for the right GI…
Avoid sorbitol, I bought a bag full of marshmallows and it had sorbitol in it, so I ate like 5 marshmallows and the package said “Excessive use of sorbitol may cause diarrhea” now I didn’t care, so I ate like 5 marshmallows and then, I had diarrhea.
This may seem funny, but just warning people.
it was not good….
Between Xylitol and Erythritol, which is the one with the intense cooling effect? Some websites say Xylitol and that’s why it’s usually combined with mint, and other websites say Erythritol has the largest cooling effect. So which is it? A strong cooling effect will probably bother me if all I want is sweetness.
Dr. Berg is the Best!!! It’s true about sugar, I have bad knee’s and right hip, since I quit sugar and bad Carbs the pain is gone. God Bless You and Your Family Dr. Berg FOREVER AMEN♀️✝️
I thought this was a great video
https://youtu.be/CYfqvTZWilw
To the most Ketogenic person that doesn’t sacrifice flavor on the internet, Thanks! Tim I throughly enjoyed this video and I always learn something from you. Please keep the videos coming!!
So it’s seeming as Imma have to hold off on my sweets for now. I’ve been doing keto for a few months but nothing is tasting sweet to me. I’ve been using Swerve…maybe I should change my sweetener?
Great information! So easy to understand. When I do eat sweets I will definitely LIMIT my intake!
So far I’ve only tried the So Nourished brand Monk fruit/Erythriltol blend and Sukrin Gold brown sugar replacement and both of them are super super cold tasting to me. I’ve made cookies multiple times and they all taste like minty gum. I can’t stand it. I’m afraid to buy a new sweetener to try cuz they’re so expensive here in Canada and I already feel like I’ve wasted my money on the 2 I’ve purchased. I can’t even ask for suggestions from people on what sweeteners don’t have that cold taste cuz there are people who actually don’t taste it at all no matter what they use so it seems different people just have different sensitivities. I just want a sweetener that doesn’t make my desserts taste like minty gum! helppppp meeeeee *cry face* lol.
I stopped using all artificial sweeteners about about 5 months ago and it’s amazing how some things I never thought of as sweet have began to seem that way now. Even a dill pickle can sometimes seem like a sweet treat to me. My taste buds have completely changed.
I use Swerve. and only in coffee and fat bombs. Down 48 in the last 15 weeks and 30-40 lbs to go. Doing strict -20 keto. Many people noticing and commenting. I am 57. but feel better than I have in 30 yrs.
Hilarious editing of little video clips into his talk. BTW, tastebuds do change!!! Also your gut flora which tell you what to eat! Yup (well at least in studies with rats) your diet changes the gut bacteria, Junkfood bacteria love junkfood and tell you to eat more. Healthfood bacteria tell you to eat more healthfood: Feed your friends! (the bacteria that tell you to eat healthy.
I have to stay away from all sugar alcohols due to IBS-even relatively small amounts cause massive issues-sore/aching gut, diarrhea, cramps, pulsating etc. Had some raspberries & blueberries at the weekend & boy did the soribitol & xylitol content in them cause problems. Years back I eat one piece of Spry chewing gum & it caused nearly 24 hours of horrible stomach pains, horrible huge solid number twos mixed in with bouts of diarrhea etc.
Fake sugar and natural low/non gi sweeteners are toxic to dogs.
The monk fruit product in the red bag is not pure monk fruit. I discovered the hard way that pretty much all large containers that purport to be monk fruit are actually mixtures, not pure. They contain erythritol, a sugar alcohol. If, like me, you are intolerant of sugar alcohols, you have to be careful to get pure monk fruit. It comes in tiny packages (ex. 2 oz), but you will only need a tiny amount. Be wary. Don’t only go by what’s on the front label. Carefully read the ingredient label on the back.
I wish I saw this video before the “bad” one… better yet, if the two were combined in a compare/contrast format
You mentioned you use Xylitol in your diet. Would be interested in learning your opinion about the pros and cons. Thanks for the info! As always, great stuff
On the toilet now watching this just because you guessed it sugar alcohol protein bar lol
Awesome! I am very pleased. I learn something new from you. You do such a good job and I am impressed with the quality of your recipe!
Aspartame is an excitotoxin, but where’s your research to backup your view that all artificial sweeteners are excitotoxins? I believe that is a false claim. Please provide links to back up your claim.
Hi Dr. Nick, I know this question is not related to this video, but I haven’t been able to find an answer. When should I test for ketones if I am using the KetoMojo and can only test once a day but want to know if I am in ketosis. What about if testing every day is not possible, especially when my schedule becomes hectic (I am a very busy health professional and I am trying to take care better of myself). Thanks very much.
Aspartame gives me skin issues like face bumps. Had to stop consuming it.
Finally some straight forward advice on artificial sweeteners! Thanks Thomas. I use Sweet&Low every morning in my coffee….I have tried to go with black coffee and I just can’t stand it! Will try switching to Monk Fruit/Stevia blend instead.
I just love your videos! You are so well spoken and pleasant. Greetings from Finland!
Thank you Dr I will be trying the Erythrito & the Monk fruitl…I’ve been using Steiva.
I love Splenda, Stevia is not sweet and tastes awful like sweet N low so I will switch try Monk Fruit.
I’m panicking now. I just can’t stay sane without my daily dessert. I use 3 tablespoons of swerve for 45 weeks. I wonder if this is screwing with my fat loss now. I’m at my goal weight but I’m trying to drop fat, gain muscle.
I have read that xylitol kills bacteria, so i was wondering if it interferes with gut bacteria?
FACTS! i make cheese cake with erythritol which is 70% sweet as sugar but is taste like sugar! I ENJOY THE SWEETNESS WITHOUT DAMAGING MY HEALTH!
Ohartificialsweetners over 86 degrees turns to formedahyde wood alcohol
man. It sure felt weird to skip the ad just to go to the video with the same exact person in it.
Tupelo honey was mentioned. Why is it better? What is its claim to fame?
i dont believe you are really a doctor if you are one of those ppl who bizarrely think GMOs are bad for your health.. no evidence for this whatsoever its a very anti scientific statement kinda like anti vax that the process of genetic modification in any way inherently makes things bad.. genetic modification is just a tool it is usually used for good.. but of course could theoretically be used for bbad.. like a knife.
Everything has sugar even if it’s only a gram or two so how much is too much daily?
Wooooah… the science is waaaaaaay off here and the terms being used are incorrect. I’m not sure if Thomas doesn’t understand blood sugar or if maybe he was just confusing terms and scientific studies, but there are “no new studies” showing anything different. This science is something that’s been well known for a long time.
Glucose “response”: This is the effect on the actual sugar in the blood in response to something you’ve consumed (i.e. it ends up in your blood sstream as actual sugar)
Glycemic Index: This is a measure of how much insulin your body produces in response to something in perceives as sugar
It’s an important distinction because you can consume something that has no glucose response (e.g. Stevia isn’t absorbed into the blood as sugar), but it still has a high glycemic index so your body will produce insulin as if you’ve consumed sugar even though you haven’t. The net effect of this is you’ll get a boost of insulin to blood that did not have extra sugar and that will cause you to have extremely low blood sugar and ravenously crave more sugar.
Summary: Eating artificial sweeteners is bad on a diet because it will make you hungry AF.
If anyone is interested in the actual glycemic index of different sugars, here’s a link:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3982014/
I’d like to make fermented lemonade as an immune system builder. It requires honey for it’s antibiotics properties. Do you know of an alternative?
Thank you!!!! This is the information I have been searching high and low for. There just isnt a lot of real talk about the keto friendly alternative sugars. So glad I found this video.
Before I tried Keto I eliminated most breads, pastas, pastries, and sweets based on sugar and transitioned to artificial sweeteners but not for baking. Now I have artificial sweetener in my coffee bec I cannot find any of the things from the USA eg stevia or monkfruit….just not available where I,live at all. Yeah I am mold enough to,remember when saccharine was introduced in diet salads and the cancer scare about that…every single sweet thing every single time has been said to be BAAAAAAD! THat will continue I am sure….some of this has been marketing BS over the past 5 decades…that is how long I have been trying to limit my sugar intake. Not hard to eliminate desserts when I have fat on keto but not going to,eliminate sweeteners from my coffee…Going on a very limited diet for,LIFE is incredibly hard to,maintain decade after decadd… talk to me when you’re 70 and let me know if you have been a dietary profits for 50,yrs….also,eveyrndecade it’s a whole new system that is popular….so good, luck, with that and all,of,it,has been viewed as scientifically based at the time.
Why is Splenda in all Starbucks and restaurants?? What’s wrong with Splenda, even Ideal Protein a medical diet uses sucralose. I have 3 dogs xylitol is deadly 4 dogs, so can’t b that great 4 us.??
erythritol is mostly GMO and very rare if found non GMO. However using too much causes bad side effects
Guys i dont know if you guys have heard of carrot fiber its usually use to add moisture to meats and they say it adds absolutely no flavor this might be a good idea for your cakes and other creations to add moisture into your cakes
M a l t o d e x t r I n
IS THE WORST!
Beware FALSE Lables. I bought STEVIA (big bag…. for baking) failed to read fine print. It was actually maltodextrin with only a minute amount of stevia.
Krisda Monk Fruit Sweetener. Contains only erythritol and monk fruit extract. A bit pricey, but I just use it for my morning coffee.
I found that stevia tainted the flavour of my coffee.
I’m happy t that sorbitol is low on the glycemic index because it’s found in no sugar polos and also in dried prunes which I use when constipated.
I use monk fruit it’s very good in my coffee almost like sugar but I haven’t had sugar In 6 months so I do not t remember lol
I will never use again any kind of sweeteners that end with “ol”. Too bad!
Love stevia! Look for one that is cut with inulin (a fiber) when going for a powder. SweetLeaf is my go-to for liquid and powder.
Great info. I currently use monkfruit mixed with erythritol it’s not as bitter as stevia..
Doc have you heard of kabocha, this all natural, sugar alternative tastes and bakes just like cane sugar….so that’s what I’ve read?? Any idea what this is??
Stumbled on to your channel. I enjoy the honesty and agree with your point of view. But just had to comment when you mention you know when something has sugar. I had some bacon last week and couldn’t even finish it. I even accused my wife of cooking it with sugar. “Trying to kill me.” Anyway nice job on the video.
Dr. Berg, please tell me if Dolcedi is keto friendly. Just discovered this today at Whole Food’s and it is the best tasting sweetener I have ever tasted. It’s made from apples and it’s low glycemic. But I value your knowledge, so please advise if this will knock me out if ketosis.
What about the sugar alcohols in chewing gum? I just checked the ingredients; Xylitol 45%, Sorbitol, Mannitol, Maltitol, Acesulfam K etc.
In One of Dr. Berg’s video he says that sugar free gum won’t affect your blood sugar/ketosis, but now I’m confused. Or is it that the amount of bad sugar alcohols is so low when it comes to gum? But what if I ate let’s say 100g along the day? That would mean 66g of sugar alcohols…(and a lot of gas!) But I’m just wondering and playing with the thought.
is it true stevia drop is sweetness for liquid and erythitol powder for stevia?
You don’t address how much is too much. Is three or 4 cups of coffee or tea a day with a teaspoon of sugar alcohols in each too much?
Sukrin brand doesn’t have a cooling sensation. I like cooking with the Sukrin Gold which is brown sugar. Tastes fantastic. Can you do a bake off with different Erythritol brands?
I bought a bunch of thinkThin bars on sale and now see that they have a lot of Maltitol in them. Wish i had seen this vid first.
Ok so here I am thinking I’m killing it without real sugar only to find out that I’m using the worst sugar alternative……God bless you doc I think this is why I haven’t been able to drop these last 20 pounds…
Take the zero or near zero glycemic sweeteners and ROLL them. Tuesday monk-fruit Friday stevia-you get the drift.
Shouldn’t get hung up.
You overdo protein and get bound up, have a sugar alcohol laced chocolate turtle and water. It’s a moving experience.
Like muscle confusion, you get the best reaction by varying it up imho, and using the characteristics of these powerful “drugs” at the right time.
This diet makes you think. That’s work, but it’s your brain and body.
So basically if someone were to go zero carb but down bottles of diet soda they wouldn’t lose weight?
I can relate to absolutely everything you said. I try to ketofy something then I binge on it. Then I’m not satisfied and double binge on the non keto food.
Hi Dr. Berg, I just ate two bratwursts for dinner and the package said that they have dextrose in them. I am fasting at the rate of one meal a day and fasting for the rest of the time so nearly 24 hrs at a time. I am also only consuming black coffee and water. I was wondering if the dextrose in the brats will make me put on weight? I only eat brats once a month.
I started drinking coffee black and non sweetened…healthier and eliminates the side effects of sweeteners altogether.
At first it was a bit difficult but I remind myself of the better health benefits
What about “Isomalt”. I see that ingredient on sugar free lozenges.
Hi Dr. Berg, can you make a video about specific about pure Monk Fruit? You actually need just a little bit of it because it’s already so strong, but what I’m really wondering is, how much can you take this stuff without having a problem? Is there a certain limit? Thanks in advance <3
Tim, just where do you find the pure stevia powder in yr recipe? Can’t wait to try it!!!
Erythritol for me even in small amounts results in discomfort in numerous ways.
Awesome people…would you advise a person to start le ketogenic lifestyle if she has suffered from severe episodes of atopic, contact and dyshidrotic dermatitis for 5 years?
I ask because of the keto rash that she could be more prone of?
I would appreciate your comments
Thank you very much!!!!
This is a great video and I love all the information provided about the different types of sweeteners. But, I really wish you talked more about the natural sweeteners and not necessarily in relation to ketosis. See, I wholeheartedly believe that something as natural as honey or dates are better for your body in the long run. I have used pure, raw honey (no additives or any of that fake stuff) for my tea and coffee many times. I find the taste to be very satisfying and it helped me stay away from table sugar. I am currently on the keto diet, so I have been avoiding honey and using stevia instead. However, I do plan to go back to honey once I reach my goal weight, hopefully. I think that the more natural the food is, the better it is for your body. So yes, while honey does spike your blood sugar levels, it still is healthier for you than many options out there; it doesn’t mess up your metabolic system and in fact has many other benefits. Of course we have to be eating it in moderation because at the end of the day, everything should be in moderation. So I think if honey is used in moderation, it could really have good benefits on your overall health in the long run and is better than many artificial sweeteners out there and definitely table sugar.
I make a really good cheesecake with pyure sweetener. That is mostly stevia with some erythritol. It is great. Non low carbers like it. But I am not a super sweets eater. The people I know are diabetic mostly and I think they are used to the fake sugars. I find the more low carb foods I eat, the better I do and don’t need as much fake sugar to taste sweet
Dr Berg my hero, can you tell me if Vegetable glycerin is bad for you.
Do you know anything about Vegetable Glycerin? You didn’t list it. It’s the main ingredient in a stevia water enhancer I’ve been using for my water. Don’t want to put crap in my body if it’s bad for me. I don’t see any other of the high sugars you listed in here on the label thanks in advance
Monk Fruit powders and liquids are very often spiked with Erythritol. Caveat emptor!
Do sugar alcohols have any affect on the liver? Or is fructose the only thing we need to worry about with regard to fatty liver development?
How about sucrose as as sweetener while u r fasting..it says 0 calories.. or I will only recommend stevia.
I use the monk fruit sweetener in my coffee while I’m between meals (I’ve been doing OMAD). I noticed when I log it that it appears to be fairly Carb heavy… how this doesn’t elicit a response is beyond my comprehension.
i ate some atkins chocolate low carb and 1 gram of sugar but farted and had diarrhea
After 1 week on ketosis I was feeling like crap, I felt weak, I constantly wanted something sweet. Week 2 was still a bit difficult. Week 3 I’ve had a can of diet coke sitting in my fridge and I don’t even crave it. My sugar cravings are completely gone. It’s really weird, I’ve never felt like this before in my life. I’ve always had a massive sweet tooth.
I know that the sweet drops stevia has vegetable glycerin in it. Is that a problem that would break a fast or raise insulin levels?
Is maltodextrin and dextrose the same? I have been buying boxes and boxes of Stevia from Cosco for a long time and it has dextrose as the first ingredient. And I use it a lot and now I am doubting what I use. Does anyone know the answer to this?
I avoided all artificial sweeteners (and natural “keto-friendly” sweeteners like monkfruit and stevia) in my first 6 weeks of keto. I consistently maintained a blood ketone level of 0.6-1.5. Last night, I had a large Diet Coke and woke up out of ketosis (0.1). Sigh. Live and learn.
I really really wanted to use some artificial sweeteners but after watching this videoto the trash they go.. I need to find a way to make tea taste better..
Just started pulling away from sugar 4 months ago. The struggle is real but I’m down 20 lbs and feel wonderful. I’m not keto and don’t ever think I’ll go that route, I don’t want to limit what fruits I can have etc. My problem is trying to find the “right” sweetener. The blue, yellow, & pink packets will kill ya so I stay away from them. stevia has an aftertaste to me but not as bad as erythritol. Not too crazy about monk fruit, it has an aftertaste as well and truvia has gmo’s in it. (Just can’t win!). I have made all the keto friendly sweets and they suck! Guess I have to let my tastebuds detox and get used to not having real sugar. Which sweeteners out there don’t have an aftertaste? By the way, just tried the chocolate mug keto flourless cake? Not bad but not so good either.
New subscriber here! Thanks for the video, I will have to try this mixture. I love my coffee sweet too.
My problem isn’t with needing something sweet. It’s with needing to drink something that isn’t tasteless water on a regular basis. I cut out juice, soft drinks, and flavored sports drinks…. Now you’re saying I can’t have diet versions of these either. Drinking water all the time is friggen BORING. What else can I drink?
Didnt you say in a previous video that xylitol was 30 on the GI?
Wont the body react to
Sugar alcohols a bit like sugar, because their chemical structures are almost similar?..
Hahahhah, this guy berg is getting funnier and funnier every day. Come on, man, dates don’t have GI of 103. It is more like 40-50. Who knows who created this list of GI from his staff. Probably some young 19yo kid. Onion GI is 75???? Seriously. Onion spikes insulin more than sugar???? This is beyond fake.
I agree with you on this video. Thank you for your thoughts.
Interesting how beneficial to health maltitol is advertised…
Can anyone help? I bought this product from my local chemist https://www.ethicalnutrients.com.au/products/product/mmgp. I am in the beginning stages of practicing and learning about the keto diet.
The chemist said is had no sugar. But it tastes very, very sweet. It has 300 mg per 8.7 g scoop of Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). Is this where the sweet taste it coming from? My partner and I have googled for more information and plugged the product into Chronometer but we are still confused because it says it has zero carbs.
We won’t be taking it before bed again. We tossed and turned all night. I had been having the best sleep I’d had in a long time on this diet.
Thank you to anyone that understands where the sweetness is coming from and whether it will stop us from achieving our goal of going into ketosis.
Artificial sweeteners are just methodone… That was profound.
Thank you so much for all your videos. From my past and present experience the nutirional information you are imparting is right at the top tier of factual, truthful, practical, and just fabulous information. Absolutely brilliant and genius data. So helpful and reassuring. Thank you so much.
I can’t wait to be FREE from any type of sugar artificial or not! I know in my heart and body it’s not good for me. It’s slowing down my weight loss and I know it. I quit beer!! One addiction at a time.
Weird. Cos for me all of the above erithritol, erithitol is the only one that doesn’t give give me gas, even stevia makes me gassy
I’m glad you broke it down to this degree! I combine FOUR SWEETNERS to get to mostly normal….but I’m a scientist too so I add other lil things too… but thanks for the post! People will love this!
Oh my god MALTITOL! I just had chocolate with it and I had to go to toilet few timesit’s good when you want to have a detoxbut please be aware and stay at home
Not great to show pictures of those sweets… makes us crave them more than we did before watching your video, which is counter intuitive to what you should be trying to achieve
Hey Dr. Berg. What about sucralose? I’ve been drinking propel fitness water and I noticed it has sucralose in it. Is this Propel water going to knock me out of ketosis?
So I bought sugar in the raw. And I checked the ingredients, it has dextrose and stevia extract in it. Is dextrose keto friendly?
I’ve heard you say erythritol is a zero. I see its a 1 on this video. This must be an older video.
Hi Dr. Nick! New to your channel. Starting to feel a kick of energy. No more napping! . 3rd day on your keto program. I wanted to make your vanilla cupcakes well, I went to the health food store. They didn’t erythritol, so they gave me a product called Better Stevia. Says glycerite on the bottle. Is this bad. 0 calories, 0 carb, 0 added sugars.
Noticed that Splenda (Sucralose) is not mentioned in the list what’s the verdict of Splenda?
do you have any recommendations for a stevia, monk fruit, or combination of both? I am looking for a sweetener that does NOT cause farting. Thanks!
I am going to stay away from.those fake sweeters like sweet and low and splendid and equal their all bad for you ♀️
Enjoyed. Very informative. I wondered about swerve and monk. Thank you!!
thomas delauer says erithotol breaks fast… any opinions on that?
Just discovered you! I am 1year into my keto lifestyle.. 148lbs down. I look forward to watching more of your awesome videos
The major one you left out is allulose, which actually IS sugar, of a different molecule, but your body will only metabolize about 1/10 of it. It can be useful in recipes that rely on sugar caramelization.
I’ve found blends of monk fruit with erythritol or stevia work pretty well for me, with an acceptable taste. Beware anything sweet may still be spiking your insulin. This may be signaled by a subtle drop in ketones or, oddly, in blood sugar (though if you think about it, this makes sense, because insulin opens your cells to sugar that’s already in the blood, causing the blood concentration to go down, all other things being equal.)
Do you have any experience with Chicory Root Fiber the brand I saw was Sweet Perfection. I’ve tried it and it tastes nice but not sure what your take would be on that? Thanks!
I stopped doing the “*tols” ( any of the sugar alcohols) It didn’t agree with my stomach and I was experiencing symptoms of the leaky gut (when proteins pass into the blood) and it wasn’t good. I simply stick with stevia now, no more issues, down 75 lbs from my all time high.
Will the artificial sweeteners kill useful bacteria to result in bloating, etc.?
2. Coming to natural sugars, what about coconut sugar in diabetic point of view?
3. Stevia has a terrible aftertaste.
4. Taste wise, sucralose is good. But killing useful bacteria?
5. Your personal preferancewhat is it’s name? Does it have useful-bacteria-killing property?
I started using erythritol serve form and love it. But since then I have been having cravings, brain fog etc. I was doing fine before. Wondering if it’s something else or if this is causing it. Any body else have this experience?
Great to know the effect of alcohol sweeteners on the microbioma. Our gut flora is way too important to ignore the consequences of our bad habits. Thanks Thomas.
My personal favorite is monk fruit, not just any brand, but the BEST I found was LACANTO MONK FRUIT,
Found in some had stores or Amazon. Comes in golden, white and my favorite, powered! Good for baking and
Mixes well in liquids
Thank you sooooo much for this information. I normally don’t leave comments on videos. But I started the keto diet about 2 weeks ago and have been using xylitol in my coffee and boy oh boy everything you said about is true and what I’ve been experiencing. So I think I’m going to try the monk fruit and the pyure product. I’ve also subscribed and liked. Thank you for taking time to help us!
According to my research, pure Sucralose which comes in a liquid like “Splenda Zero” or what I think is the best “EZ Sweetz” has NO insulin response because it doesn’t have the Maltodextrin in it which is used to create the powder in the powder form of Sucralose like splenda in the packets or big bag. The Maltodextrin is what causes an insulin response and it’s worse than actual sugar. As for liquid Sucralose I use a few drops in my Kale shake, in my coffee and in my ACV/Cranberry/Lemon cocktail. I haven’t noticed any noticeable side effects yet and I’m not really worried about it. It makes my dieting much more pleasurable and I can’t stand Stevia. BTW after a month of using it I’m in about a 4.4 state of ketosis which is a pretty strong ketonic state for fat burning.
What are your thoughts, Thomas???
I am glad I found your channel, while this looks yummy I have a sweet doggie and xylitol is very toxic to dogs a tiny amount can cause them to die so I will try to find something with stevia, erythmitol and monk Fruit.a k ick off of Lakanto, so expensive but I would hate to eat baked product and a crumb drop and have irmt make my little terrier girl try to scoff it up. No I don’t feed her sweets but she is a dog ❤️
Just discovered coconut sugar. Will that throw me out of ketosis?
Hi Dr Berg. How to add erythritol when calculating keto macros?
Been on keto for 8 months. I haven’t touched a sweetener yet. Coffee black. Not even cream.
To clarify, in your stevia video you say erythritol is not good because t comes from corn… but now you say it’s good??????
@Dr Jason Fung on his book “The Obesity Code” said if you take natural sweetener it doesn’t raise glucose but it does raise insulin 20% more than sugar.
I don’t use any of these, I just eliminate that sweet taste in my diet, the sweetest taste I do is coconut butter and Ceylon cinnamon
I am not on keto but I need to loose weight and I hate tge after taste of regular sweetners. I am subscribing for this recipe.
I was told a long time agoand have personally researched my desire for a sweet fixwas told, when we crave sweetsour body is telling us we Need a vitimun C fixfruit is highest in vitimin C when it’s the ripests/sweetests
I had to go cold turkey. Absolutely no sweet stuff. When I tried fake sweet I ate more than I should. But I’m trying to find the best thing for our carb loving autistic son to switch his foods.
Don’t confuse sucralose with “Splenda”. You can purchase pure sucralose powder at Bulk Supplements. It is a very powerful sweetner that has no effect on blood sugar in and of itself. Note: a little goes a long way and if you decide to use it, you will need to get some micro measuring spoons. 1/16 tsp is enough to make my 16oz coffee very sweet.
The main issue is that artificial sweeteners taste disgusting. I avoid them at nearly all cost.
Look up miracle fruit. Decades before a man extracted miraculin from this fruit and the fda classified it as not safe. At the same time all the articial sweeteners came on the market. You can still buy dried miracle fruit. After chewing it everything sour tastes sweet! Lemonade made only from lemon and water for example.
Splenda is not the same with sucralose! The researchers that do not recommend sucralose actually used splenda NOT sucralose alone. Splenda has maltodextrin as main ingredient. That’s very different! Sucralose is the only artificial sweetener that is quite safe to use. Please look into it Dr. Berg. You are the best when it comes to keto and finding the truth with research that is not what it seams and we need your expert opinion, but please look into it first (see what the researchers actually used when they talk about sucralose, usually is splenda that has maltodextrin mostly). I use sucralose (sorbitol and erythritol too) at least a few times a week (not splenda thou), soon are 2 years since I started keto +IF (thanks to Dr, Berg mainly), and sucralose is very keto & IF friendly, does not spike the insulin and it has way less side effects (laxative effects included but not limited to that) then most sugar alcohols. Thank you!
