No one follows the USDA recommendations. How do I know that? The average American eats a diet of 37-45% cal. fat. With that fat intake they CANNOT be eating the USDA diet it is impossible!! Pritikin highlighted the lies of the US govt in the 1980’s.

No, you don’t burn nearly the same amount of calories in weights as cardio. To burn one calorie, you need to lift the equivalent of 800 pounds one meter, I can’t do that 400 times in an hour, how about you. (Side note is that yes I could probably do it if it is lighter weight with REALLY high reps, but that isn’t why I do weights, I primarily want strength and hypertrophy, not endurance)

Replacing carbs (of all kinds) with natural fat changed my life. I don’t feel hungry while losing weight. I have more energy and sometimes I feel the need to only eat once a day (whereas before I’d be eating all throughout the day). I’ve always been skinny-fat but this dietary change helped me tone up and gain a lot more confidence. In the morning I have a full fat cream coffee then eat regular salted peanuts at my desk (not too much) during the morning/afternoon. I eat a pot of coleslaw for lunch or some meat or some cheese then an omelette/ meat veggies and cheese for dinner.
No one is proposing that processed sugar is a health food. If you ask anyone drinking soda or putting sugar in their coffee they will not argue that they are doing so because of the health benefits, but for the taste and quick acting energy, it provides. But people who crave and add processed sugar in their diet is primarily because they are eating inadequate unrefined starches (potatoes, oatmeal, rice, corn, beans, whole grains). And if Gary Taubes follows a low-carb diet and doesn’t add sugar, it is likely because he his highly motivated by selling books, not because he doesn’t have sugar cravings on a low-carb diet, no?
Not that long ago, I thought it was an exaggeration to suggest that sugar consumption today is as dangerous as smoking. Having listened to hundreds of speeches like this presented by knowledgeable people, including many doctors from around the world with incredible data to support their conclusions, I agree that sugar is pretty much poison. High fructose corn syrup should be outlawed.
Real Stevia may not be a problem but garbage like Truvia et all is a great way to give yourself diarrhea and added unseen sugar read the ingredients of Truvia there is a tiny amount of Stevia in it but most of it is Erythritol with added dextrin to form a white powder. Dextrin adds a small amount of sugar to the lot but in this case they consider it in such a small amount less than half a gram (per severing )that by law they don’t have to count it. When you’re on Keto you need to count all sugar so you would have to weight out your serving because the packet size is not one serving.
I play football 4-5 days a week amd also I do strength training 3-4 times a week, I’m not skinny I’m not fat but my abs aren’t visible very clearly but sometimes they do show up. Where am I wrong? (And I’m well aware of my calorie intake amd burn)

I only do fasted cardio because I do intermittent fasting, my eating window is from 1:00PM to 9:00PM, and I do the treadmill at 9:00AM, or 10:00AM. I also burn 950 calories on average, in my hour on the treadmill. And I eat around 1500-1750 calories day.

His point about “calories in calories out” being a tautology isn’t exactly sound. He compares it to economics and climate change; a more apt comparison is business management. Imagine you opened a business, but you decided you weren’t going to track your sales and purchases. No spreadsheets tracking sales, no keeping track of stock, you’ll just follow your gut feelings and run your business by the seat of your pants. Do you think this kind of management would result in a successful business? Obviously not, if you’re not keeping track of your revenue and costs, then you won’t even realize when you are spending more then you earn.
Calories in and calories out is a tautology, this is true; but it’s also the basic management work you need to perform to successfully lose fat. You can get rid of sugar, you can go on a ketogenic diet, or a vegan diet, or a Mediterranean diet, but if you don’t perform the basic management work of tracking your input and your output then you’re like a business man who doesn’t keep an eye on his revenue and spending.

As Hippocrates stated “Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food.” which is a great philosophy to follow however the problem we have these days is the soil the food is grown in is so depleted of Minerals & Vitamins by the way Big Ag grows food that you would need to eat a wheelbarrow full of food in one sitting just to get (if you can get it) what people used to get 50 years ago and as Dr. Ames pointed out the average Doctor these days (well actually to more correct when Big Pharma came on the scene) has no training in Nutrition, plenty of training in drugs but none in Nutrition because there’s no money in Nutrition and plenty of money in drugs.

Our Canadian Government stopped paying for the Vitamin D test. They said its not a vitamin (hormone) of importance. Never pays to follow the nutritional advise of your government. I usually do the opposite. (They recommend Canola Oil as a healthy oil. I’m sure its because Canada is the largest producer of Canola Oil.)

If virtually all chemicals tested for carcinogenicity are positive on 50% of the rats, then either the background cancer occurrence is swamping that arising from the test chemical, or else the dosage of the chemical is so high that the body’s natural protection mechanism cannot cope. The first is solved by larger experimental and control groups, and the second invites the use of dose-response curves. So why did he not mention these points? In the current video he seems far more scientific.
Wild statements that “everything is carcinogenic” do not inspire confidence. He mentioned only carcinogens in yellow dye, and ignored asbestos, fossy-jaw, and benzene from pumping gas.

I lost 72 pounds in 18 months but my primary exercise was weight training and its helped me stay lean for 9 months now. I did 2 HIIT workouts a week which allowed me to eat a little more and stay in a deficit and build cardiovascular endurance but this was a supplement to my weight training. interesting and informative video. HOWEVER, i think you have a number of assumptions at the foundation of your explanations that are not mentioned… for example, ANY cardio is better than NO cardio. You should first highlight all the benefits of cardio, and THEN go into details about what to avoid. Otherwise, this video just sounds like cardio is useless in losing weight, or prevents muscle gain, which is completely untrue.
I started cycling in March when gyms closed to covid gravel cycling with lots of hills was 122kg at the start (64y.o) and could barely go 20km and walked up the hills still 119kg but can now do a 100km ride at 6 hours with 1600m of climbing no walking so my shape is really so much better and I will guess there are 1-2kg more muscles. But you right its hard to lose weight bec you getting so damn hungry after these rides and you relax a lot too much. So I will now starting more serious at the gym again and with diet to lose those 20-25kg that will really make me fit. One goal is to be able to run 10km in 1 hour for a start…. I think I need to lose 10-15kg to do that…

This is just to much. If you do this you’re wrong if you do that you’re wrong!! I basically workout and monitor my results in my strength and body transformation. Everybody is different when it comes to weight loss. Some lose faster than others.

I am 61 and do three days weights (push legs pull) then do a 30 mile road bike on 4th day in about 2 hours. Day off. Then start again. I am 6 4 and 238 pounds (17 stone). It feels like a good balance and have been doing this for about a year. With good results. At my age need to do resistance but think the cardio is good for my heart. Be really interested in any feedback.

A good way to help is to search the healthy weight of someone your age and compare it to your weight. If it’s a litte lower, you’re still fine. A lot lower, you may need to see a doctor and/or start eating more.

Do mostly compound exercises, 2-3 sessions of 15min of cardio sessions and progressive overload with a little caloric surplus. Most importantly stay consistent. Thank me in 6 months:)
I skate and it is so much fun that suddenly hours has past and marathon distance traveled. I wouldn’t change skating to anythign else except cross country skiing. They are so fun aerobic exercises to feel flow, wind and going fast and after that sauna and gold therapy and you feel amazing.

He’s saying ultimately it comes down to nutrition and that weight lifting is more efficient when burning fat but cardio and weights can impede on each other so space them out. You are obviously going to lose weight from just cardio so long as you have a calorie deficit.

Re: Fasted Cardio… Does cardio add to the positive effects of Intermittent Fasting though? Even though it might not burn any more calories, does it improve fasting response… so, it’s like you fasted longer?

The reason I don’t subscribe is because there’s too much going on and “proven” or “research” facts thrown on your face that its annoying….he focuses too much on the “research” rather than getting to the actual point

This hits hard because I went through a horrible time where I hated my self image, the period of time was about maybe 2-3 months, where I barley ate anything. (For my case I wouldn’t consider it an eating disorder, no offense to anyone who has went through a more bad time) My parents really didn’t notice or care. I still sometimes struggle with my self image but it’s not as bad as it used to be, my best friend helped me allot. I still love her to this very day, and am still friends with her.

C’mon follow K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple stupid). Keep is short and simple and stupid. The longer you go, the easier you lose us and we don’t focus and move on. Give us what we need to hear cause you summarise it at the start good. But repeat everything at the end exactly the same just a few other words in. Make sense tho really? My coach 8 abs 7 percent body fat he never do weights. He is professional muaythai fighter. One kick can break stone he Runs 10 k a day and kick 200 kicks each side everyday plus many abs works and sparring but never do weights training because he does not know how to lift weights.

A good mix of Cardio and weight lifting will always be better for your body, i go to the studio every 2 days and on the days im not im jogging 10 km. My goals are 2 gain muscle, improve my stamina and losing fat at the same time. If you eat right thats possible. Im eating tons of Protein, try to get all the nutrients i need through a diverse diet and keep the sweets out. So far it works great
