On a keto diet that is more plant-based (salads, nuts, etc for example), you’ll still have regular bowel movements. Of course you should have much less bowel movements on a carnivore diet, because you’ll have less food material in your large intestine after digestion. They know this from people that have to wear colostomy bags. They had much less waste in their bags when they ate meat versus plant-based food. When you eat meat for example, your small intestine has much more nutrition to absorb, whereas, if you are eating grains or vegetables, a lot of it is fiber which just gets passed through into the large intestine which also places more stress on the large intestine. They always say its healthy to have bowel movements like once a day. That’s BS. Your bowels do not care to have movements every day and would prefer not to, because dealing with extra food material and fiber is nothing but stress for the large intestine.

Started on keto/IF 2 weeks ago, done a couple longer fasts of 48 hr plus, and have had only one small dump in all that time, been about ten days now, guess I’m just full of shit. I hear celery might help so I got some of that, might just need more veggies overall.

My husband and I are starting to eat keto and have just ordered your book. We are hoping he will be able to get off of blood pressure meds and also stave off diabetes because the nurse at his doctor’s office told him, only in a passing conversation, “oh yeah you are predictable by the way.” Anyhow he has trouble with hemorrhoids also and since we started this a couple of weeks ago he is having a flair up. So I am wondering if keto might exacerbate that condition? Or is there anything he should be doing to help that? Thank you for all your wisdom and time..

FOR me it was FOOLISHLY way too much almond butter/cheese and accidental severe dehydration. ( a very bad combo for sure for me) Going thru a very bad bout of it now from that:( Had to seek medical attn for this today:( very sick from it. MY BAD AND I WILL NEVER DO THIS AGAIN! Drinking Clearlax and gave myself a fleeeet…on the mend and ready to keto on once i can eat again. Just glad i am surviving this and know exactly what i did wrong in this case…i have so learned this the HARD way uggh! I have IBS with diareaha. I have been on the keto diet for five days. I had poop as I was walking around the block. I hurried home. I had a lot of diareaha, when I got home. I use lopermide to harden poop. I hope this cures it in time.

Chia seeds alone will not “cure” keto constipation. This is a three-headed monster. Chia seeds give you fiber, but you still need pre-biotics and probiotics. Pre-biotics are the type of fiber that we really need. They keep your probiotics bacteria healthy. I would recommend flaxseed meal and whole milk kefir.

ive had to do the magnesium citrate drinks a couple times in the past too. they definitely work just dont make sure to be near a toilet around the 7.5 hour mark. your gonna be pooping liquid for an hour lol

I have to careful because I get dry stool with keto. The veggie help but it’s not the bowel movement the issue is the hardness that’s hard to move. What causes the dry stool.

So I started keto and immediately pooped less, but I went from once a day to one every 4 days that was very dry, scratchy and painful. Since I am poor I did not drastically increase my meat intake and I am not a fan of dairy, but I did eat a lot more fresh veggies. Is there a dietary tip I am missing?
1. Experiment with protein to fat ratio (trying upping fat, maybe 75% fat to 25% protein).
2. Slow cooked meat vs. less cooked meats (less cooked is better).
3. Consider meal spacing (OMAD can be hard for the gut).
4. Consider meal timing (don’t eat close to bedtime).
5. Consider rendered fat intake (prioritize raw fat, rendered fat should be used for cooking)
6. Liquid intake and timing (don’t drink a lot after meals).
7. Activity levels (exercise helps).
8. Stress.
9. Consider bone consumption (a lot of bones increases constipations)
Bonus:
Don’t smang (sming, smung)
CHIA SEEDS are they not high in oxalates…which can cause numerous problems. I would guess use them only as needed.
I heard vegans make a lot of bowel movements, which means more methane methane is a 20 times stronger green house gass than CO2, and much worse, as plants eat CO2 for food, but do not eat methane.

You could do a salt water. 1-2 t of salt in water, shoot it down, dont go any where for the day…lol! True constipation comes with a lot of pain. If you’re carnivore, you poo less because your body is using the bioavailable fuel.

Your completely right. My husband had stage 3B N2 M0 colorectal cancer. He underwent an illeostomy prior to treatment. If he ate any produce we would see it in his waste. Full raisins (sorry to be graphic lol) but the medical team told him to eat everything you were not supposed to. He does miss salads tho. I follow a very strict keto diet and feel great!

Hi Doc…I’ve had issues with constipation for many years (to a point i had a hemorrhoid surgery done…). I’m not necessarily on keto..but I am on a ‘moderate’ carb diet (under 100 grams/day).I use chia seeds in my low carb homemade bread, and I am already taking about 1 tbs chia seeds everyday…I do have a question about magnesium citrate. I take about 320mg mag citrate (two pills…) a day, but I don’t think it has that laxative effect…is it at least enough to reduce the spinchter spasm/relaxes the muscles so i can go easier? I am not sure if the powder version works better? Also second question…I’ve been taking Miralax daily…but a very small dose…maybe just 1/2 tsp in the morning with coffee.. vs the suggested dosage of 17 grams/capful (equivalent to maybe 6 tsp)…I am planning to take this maybe at least for another couple months until my fissures fully healed (had a huge blockage a couple weeks ago 6 weeks post op) and my rectum is back to normal. So is it safe to take 1 tsp miralax a day? for another couple months? I have done everything else from eating 5-7 prunes a day and drinking 1/4 cup of parsley juice (just started a couple days ago which maybe the potassium made me go…). Hope to hear from you…thank you!

If you don’t get your periods back, your ovaries will shrink aka premature menopause and you never be able to have children. Ask yourselves why you are doing this to yourselves. Why you are not looking for boyfriend and why you live under the same roof 24/7 with 3 dogs? As long as you behaving the same, you will not get your periods back,. There are so many good men out there who want to be fathers and our women are making themselves infertile in the GYM and living with dogs.
Don’t forget hydration, being keto makes you lose a lot of water and minerals with it so don’t forget to add the sea or rock salt.

Taking a spoonful of chic seeds can be dangerous. Mix it in water an drink. You don’t want to get sued from someone in the hospital that didn’t do it right. Must have lots of water.

Magnesium Citrate is great to relieve constipation it draws water into the bowls and helps move things along. Also most people are deficient in Magnesium and it helps with relaxation, sleep, muscle cramps twitches, and many many more biological processes. I was on OMAD but after I got fat ear means not an in-ear-infection but between the ear shell and the face I had to go to 2MAD and had a few slices of cooked ham for breakfast to take the antibiotic pill
but since the ham was seasoned with a bit of honey I got hungry at around lunchtime so I took a bowl made with beef stripes, sliced hard boiled eggs, butter sliced and either or both mushrooms (raw, seared or cooked) and asparagus to eat during lunchtime and later I had a piece of fresh roasted beef roast to take my second antibiotic pill cause I like to use the leftovers of the roast to make my lunch bowl lol I found out my digestion is much better now then when I was on OMAD so I might stick with 2-3 MAD for awhile lol I use chopsticks this is why I cut my roast in stripes lol
I shared your video on my FB blog for my friends who started Keto after me talking about it since I started the FB blog I switched from normal Keto means Protein, Fat and Carbs to animal based Keto Carnivore means no carbs or up to 5 grams for the whole day but usually I either have less or non-carbs lol

My husband had a stroke in December and is also only eating meat and only two vegetables he eats is carrots/ green beans. He’s been using enimas and I told him only do them no longer than two weeks then he should see a doctor I would think but I’m between time any advice? I told him adding fiber pills or like Metamucil or Miralax and or stool softeners? So please give me something he could try before we have to go see doctor with an expensive cost for a visit thank you

I think everyone is different. Dr. Westman says that most people who can eat a lot of calories and still lose weight are young, male jocks. Those who can’t are often middle aged, sedentary, women. Since I’m a middle aged, sedentary woman, eating extra fat doesn’t work for me.

Perfect timing! I have been on keto for 3 months and thought I was over constipation issues I had the first few weeks. But I just did the Dr. Fung week long intermediate fast, which included 2 48 hr fasts, mixed with other days of 18:6 IF. Constipation plagued me for days after that. This helps a lot. Thanks.

Been doing keto for about 8 months. Started experiencing constipation about 2 weeks ago.
Went from very easy bowel movements to being plugged up very suddenly.
Now I know to completely ignore this guy when he says “none of my clients have ever experienced……..fill in the blank.” This guy says that alot. I have experienced serious constipation on ketosis, so intense that I’ve had to take enemas. I’m working on sorting it out, because I love the ketogenic diet.

sometimes your mind is telling you that you should be pooping but if you’re not really feeling the need then you shouldn’t force it. sometimes a fart is just a fart and little baby rabbit poops are okay if you know you’re eating higher protein and lower fats. happened to me the other day when i was eating some chicken breast for one of my meals without any extra fats (i add bacon to my chicken usually). protein is also more nutrient dense and so your body will absorb a lot of that and you just wont have anything to poop.
My friend who got me started with Keto was diagnosed with diverticulosis many years ago. Shortly after he started Keto he noticed no more symptoms, he can eat seeds and nuts with zero symptoms. I think in the presence of carbs, maybe seeds are a problem.
The magnesium citrate Dr. Berry talks about in this video as a bowel stimulant is the same stuff you get as a bowel-emptying prep for colonoscopies. I can tell you from personal experience that it works great for emptying your bowels! My colon was EMPty!
Chunks of incompletely digested meat can absolutely end up in the ostomy bag. One reason you probably don’t see it often is that ostomates (at least I) have learned to chew my food, especially meat, very thoroughly, lest I end up with problems. Even in my case, with just my rectum (rectal cancer) removed, it’s easy to run into problems if food isn’t chewed up well enough.
I agreed with this for the most part, but that seemed to be a bit of cause-effect confusion.
I love your videos! I have been a carnivore for 2 months now. You often talk about Beef Suet. Do you have an alternative for that? I live in the Netherlands and that is not available here. If when I eat chia pudding, it causes some diverticulosis pain passing through, how can eating a tablespoon full not blown up not cause pain?
Once I did an experiment. I drunk 20grams of salt with water. I guarantee you’ll poop within 10 minutes. It’s called salt flushing as I later learned. I was pooping liquid for 2-3 days. It’s unstable but has effect.

i had good experience with a salt flush. I use this, when i had nothing going for about 7 days. Just drink 1 Liter of water with 2 teaspoons of salt (rockor seasalt) within 5 minutes. keep drinking unsalted water moderately afterwards. It should do it’s work within 45-90 minutes. i find it to be mild on the body while still having a good impact on losening things up. And magnesium didn’t work for me.
It also wasn’t the first time i heard about more fat and less rendered fat. The thing is, i do not have access to fatty cuts of meat. everything here (in Germany) is very lean. Even the meat i bought from a local farmer. I asked for beaf suet, and they didn’t even know what that was. So i have to rely on things like butter and tallow if i want to increase the fat in my meal.

I had floating stool the past 2 years I was on and off keto which was often too soft and too light in colour also with the unpleasant, quick kinds of sittings inbetween. I think my body wasn’t able to properly adapt to fat digestion. Been carnivore for the past 10 weeks straight with occational non-carnivore foods here and there and my stool went back to normal. If I eat only meat I use the bathroom once per day, if I eat other foods too (like selfmade carni buns which are mostly eggs and grinded pork rinds) I sometimes go twice. the Magnesium supplements that the dear doc berry recommends, i’d rather do not take them.
why? because i do not take supplements, none of them, not even multi-vitamins as many times we never know what is in those pills, and our paleo ancestor never took them, nor do we. EVERYTHING our bodies need can be found in NATURAL foods. Therefore, I’d rather get the increase of magnesium in natural foods. WE can eat found in Dark Chocolate, the darker the better. The best one is Hershey’s 100% cocoa. You make a good rich cup of that Chocolate (nothing added, just the powder) and it will be just as drinking magnesium. The taste you get used to, my taste buds got adapted and i enjoy this coup of real dark chocolate. Or we can eat chocolate bars as dark as possible, 90% is available at any supermarket. ALSO, you can eat the magical Avocados. The avocado is an incredibly nutritious fruit and a tasty source of magnesium. ive been an atkins/keto person for over 10 years and i still have constipation issues. i feel bad after about 3 to 4 days. ive gone as long as 2 weeks at times. after that my body says enough and then ill have the runs for 3 days, then the cycle starts again. im gonna try the chia seeds i hope they work. in my case though i think the chia seeds may have to be a permanent daily thing.

After starting keto, i didn’t pooped for 3 days. It was all gassy and horrible fatigued feeling.
So i ate bread on 4 day, till the end of 4th day, i had diarrhea type situation and all the veggies were out of system. And all the gas was gone and I felt light.
I had to diagnose myself with the help of Youtube. The advise was free and saves me more than a $100.00 a month on medical costs. My doctors were oblivious to Metabolic Ketosis Adaptation. If doctors put their patients into Ketosis they would go bankrupt along with the pharmaceutical industry.

Drinking alot of water is not really necessary on Keto. Most important is to keep your electrolytes (especially sodium & potassium) balanced without the balance of 4:1 ratio the water in the intestines will be pulled out of them. Be aware to ease into eating the 7 cups of veggies recommended per day go slow work up in cups greens can be constipating until you’re acclimated to the diet. Plus, you can add taking some bile salts this helps the gallbladder & pancreas to release the necessary enzymes to digest proteins.

Yes, apple cider vinegar is really good for constipation. I just have to be careful about drinking it (and lemon juice water) because it deteriorates teeth enamel and I have sensitive teeth. Stupid over hyped diet isn’t worth it, not impressed with the cult of keto at all. There are so many variables that can go wrong with it including not being able to sleep and now you can’t crap with it either. Seriously, how the hell is that supposed to benefit your health? Has anyone done any research on the longterm effects of this diet? I’ll bet they haven’t although I am hearing reports of pancreatic issues with some people. Sorry I don’t buy this diet being meant for longterm, I’m not even sure it’s good for short term. Be careful on this diet, I don’t believe it’s for everyone, no matter what the experts say.

I tried drinking water only when I’m thirsty and was shocked how well it worked. Before I’d drink way too much too fast. This I learned causes hyponatremia, which makes you feel more thirsty. It also flushes out electrolytes like potassium that soften stool, thus making them harder and less passable.

Constipation, almost always, is an issue of not enough water intake. Probably, something as simple as drinking a liter of water, between meals.
Another thing to do is keto is often not a zero carb diet but a very low carb diet. As in less than 10 grams per 1000 calories. This is a ridiculously small amount as refined carb but is a reasonable amount in the form of say, salad.
My own keto diet is essentially a hundred different varieties of cruciferous vegetable (broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce). Usually 5 grams or less regular carbs but a reasonable amount of fiber. A small amount of meat. And a huge amount of fat. Often, half a stick of butter. I am however, bigger than the two of you combined (mostly muscle).
For those who don’t want to bother and just eat a carnivorous diet, a sugar free fiber supplement is idea. HOWEVER, ONLY if its the type you drink with water. As it is the water that actually keeps your digestive system in good working order. Some people for whatever reason will prefer capsules. This is a bad idea unless taken correctly….which is to say, you drink an entire liter of water with the dry supplement.
Protein vs fat. Often an issue with diabetes. Your body, can, and often will, turn protein into glucose via gluconeogenesis. It’s that thing everyone in college grinds through in biochem class in college and then promptly forgets since no one mentions that it is a real thing not a theoretical thing. The higher the protein, the less effective your insulin, and especially, the more refined the protein, the more likely protein turns into glucose. Almost never happens with food…..steak, eggs etc. But its quite common with not food products. Refined protein in bars, shakes, powders etc.
Many body builders get a surprise with this as they put on the wrong type of weight (a sign of diabetes). Although their blood sugar and A1C is low, when measured, their insulin level is abnormally high. The reason why is gluconeogenesis.
Interesting about the not adding too much fat and eating protein to satiety. Correlates to what Dr. Ted Naiman tends to tweet and the not fearing increased protein intake with what Dr. Ben Bikman lectured about at Low Carb Breck ’18.

I started keto and intermittent fasting 2 weeks ago. After the initial transition, we absolutely couldn’t go back to the deadly American diet!! But I unfortunately have gotten bound up. I noticed that it has been a couple days and no go. Its not that I feel horrible but I have been there before, so would like to nip it in the bud. Took the chia seeds hourly and 3 hrs and all good!! I took 13 tbls of seeds throughout day yesterday along with MCT oil. NOTHING! Only a BAI drink today (has worked in the past) along with 2 tbls MCT oil so far. Still nothing! May take a Senna pill tonight…. Btw, also felt I was going to EXPLODE with all the seeds/water yesterday. Very uncomfortable. Didn’t think I should keep going??
It works!!! I made a stew with chicken broth and spinach-ELECTROLYTES and I had a half of avocado-POTASSIUM and than I had little bit of broccoli and mixed greens-FIBER. And some CHIA SEED to get it all going.
No dairy, no meat.

I was eating large amounts of low carb veggies..every single day at least 450-500g a day, also i included homemade sauerkraut as well, but i am getting constipated. for a week or so, i eliminated all vegetables, eating just fats, mostly saturated and meat..it is called the paleo-ketogenic approach (PKD) promoted by Dr. Csaba Toth from Hungary. the fat-protein ratio is 2:1..for example if you eat 80g of protein, the fat should be 160g, also includes organ meats like liver and brain, heart, etc (by the way, i love to eat organ meat). My question is..should i just eliminate the veggies and continue with this protocol? the truth is that i am feeling much better, i am not bloated after eating like i was when i ate veggies. another thing would be dairy. Regarding dairy, i eat just high fat dairy, mostly buying them from local farms (sheep cheese, goat, sour cream, etc) no milk, no yogurt. could these dairy products contribute to constipation as well? i don’t have any skin issues, like rash, not even pimples so my thought is that it is not affecting me in a negative way but..the PKD protocol eliminates dairy products of any kind. By the way, i am on OMAD for more than a year, i feel great, and since i eliminated the veggies, i don’t have blood sugar issues, maybe this is result of the high fat content that keeps my blood sugars at the optimum level. Your advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

i realized that when i eat trully healthy food, my body absorbs the nutrition way more efficiently so i don’t need to go use the bathroom daily. However, when i used to eat pizza etc, i would notice a huge difference. Personal experience is sometimes enough to understand a few things about foods.
I tried this technique, using Kellogg’s All Bran, after a long course of antibiotics had deranged my. gut bacteria-1/2 cup a few times a day. One morning I woke up with such awful pain in my belly that I went to the emergency room. X-ray showed “six to eight pounds” of material lodged in my intestine, above the blockage. It took a Fleet brand enema to break the blockage.
If a person has a really hard, impacted stool, all those chia seeds might be dangerous.
When I started keto I got an impacted stool that require insertion of a finger to break it apart…laborious and bloody. I still had to use half of a Fleet to flush it out. Same thing happened some days later, but the second half of the Fleet was enough to get things going.
I am now doing Low Carb Health Fat, on One Meal a Day. I eat six to eight prunes with the meal (peanut butter cheat with it). I also do 3 Tbsp of chia seeds, twice a day. Stool can still be somewhat hard, but bending forward and twisting side to side on the pot has been working to get them to pass.
Constipation will make or break this for me. So far, so good. Just finished a 48-hour fast, my first ever, and it was fantastic! Constant energy, and NO hunger.

Hi Ken, I started keto 29.04.19 and lost 4 stone as of 2 weeks ago. I stalled and so I went on to Carnivore. The problem now us constipated, not done no2 for 4 days. I want to do the Carnivore because I have 2 stone still to go but not if I am going to be clogged up. Do love your advice and videos.

I am 11 days into my Keto journey and the struggle is real. I am passing stools but they hard hard and huge! I honestly don’t know whether or not to push because of the size and pressure. After passing these stools I have had pain in the rectum pretty much until bedtime (Several hours) now 2 days later hemorrhoid. Can I still use Chia seeds for relief?

I’ve been on keto for 3.5 weeks and have lost 13 pounds (yay!). My constipation is completely gone. I take magnesium citrate daily at bedtime. I love this “diet.”
A cup of hot coffee in the morning also helps:) although some people wouldn’t consider it carnivore, it’s not a big deal to me!

if you see the way coconut oil or fat coagulates when it gets colder, the substance gets pretty hardened. Since you consume more fatty substances on keto can they partially solidify internally or at least just cause more viscosity that could contribute to cause constipation?

The answer to constipation is: Aloe vera juice (raw from leaves), flax meal, okra. Any of these three will get rid of constipation.
