Excellent presentation, clear and concise. I use powdered theanine primarily, BulkSupplements is great. 200 mg really does nothing for me, my sweet spot seems to be 600-800 mg. Great for general relaxation, as a nootropic stack with caffeine (as you explained so well), and as a sleep aid. As this seems to work for me, not sure there’d be any benefit to trying the patented form (Suntheanine). It’s also significantly pricier than the stardard powders and capsules.
So if Theanine is helpful for sleep, yet makes the brain more alert, would it be helpful to take it at night as a potential sleep aid or not?

Hello! Great video, very informative! Question could L-Theanine possibly have a crash or hangover-like outcome the next day? I get that with caffeine, even a medium size coffee, I’ll have a noticable lack of energy the next day. Which is why I don’t consume coffee regularly (and hence it is a nice treat when I do!) and stick with tea. Yesterday, I received good matcha tea and today I have had two cups of it (4 tsps). I believe matcha contains L-Theanine in a near 1:1 ratio, with a bit more caffeine (17mg:25mg per tsps). I certainly feel more relaxed and definitely feel the caffeine kick, too. It’s definitely a more relaxed ‘up’, comparable to utilizing CBD. My question and concern is, to be determined tomorrow if I will feel a crash. Perhaps I will just because of the caffeine, so, I suppose I’d need to try with L-theanine alone only to see by myself. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

It’s such a shame as l-theanine did reduce my anxiety and stress markedly but also caused my PVC’s to become multifocal and even PVC couplets which is dangerous. Since stopping they have gone back to unifocal PVCs.

I get 100mg daily from Mind Lab Pro, 400mg as a supplement along with 200mg caffeine (mainly this much due to caffeine capsules being 200mg/capsule) and in the evening 500mg as a sleep aid (along with other stuff like Valerian Root in the mix).

I’ve felt amazing results in terms of calmness, reduced anxiety and better cognition. Moreover, I have felt that my meditation sessions have never been any better, I really feel like I am in some other world. Besides that my my sleep quality has increased significantly, I find it easy to fall asleep plus I can remember my dreams in much more detail.

I’ve been recently overcoming anxiety and depression. Furthermore, I’ve noticed myself displaying a few symptoms of hormonal imbalance. However, for whatever reason I decided to get a cup of coffee a few days ago.. and idk wtf but my anxiety and stress is gone!. hey I know this video is old, but there is a very important aspect that you missed. There is another tea, which. contains L theanin and also caffein. Its called Guayusa, and its perfect for anyone, who has problems concentrating or stress. The L theanin counters some bad side effects of the caffein, so you are able to sleep and dont get sweating or a faster heartbeat.

I had to stop and I’m so mad because It really calmed me. Then I noticed it was making my throat itch and my My body was itching like allergy symptoms. I stopped and restarted same reaction so I just stopped today. I also noticed in the middle of the night I would wake up coughing like crazy also a side effect of the L Theanine I encountered. As for using Ashwaghanda was extremely calming 450mg form and 600mg liquid form two different brands I experienced both irregular heart beats with both. I’ve had my heart ECG ultrasound and a Lexiscan both were normal less than a year ago. I know it could be anxiety but you can’t stop and start and still feel the same. I just swallow a tablespoon of honey to relieve it before baking anything else and it did. Honey for the itchy sensation. That’s my experience.

How much L-theanine to have a significant amount of GABA release as much as 0.5mg of Xanax for example. I get anxious and depressed but taking 0.5mg Xanax saved my life. I’m able to think clearly and I never abuse it like these new age kids. Just a little makes me calm down and realize how beautiful life truly is and how it’s easier to look at things objectively rather than basing my outlook on my body’s rush of cortisol during an anxiety episode. I don’t wanna get hooked on Xanax so I want an alternative to be able to feel this happy. I feel like I’ve been deprived of GABA for years.

Optimal dose varies widely. Everyone is different. Optimal is the therapeutic dose, no more, no less. Should start with 200 mg as suggested, wait 30-60 min. Take more if needed, wait again. And so on, until you hit your “sweet spot”. You’ll know when you’re there, you’ll feel the relaxation, it will be obvious. Quite simple really. 200 mg does absolutely nothing for me.

GABA works superb for me. They banned it in the UK so they can push Gabapentin. From my experience GABA crosses the blood brain barrier in some people and in others it doesn’t. The best way imo is to put the GABA powder in a soft drink and get it in your system. Although a sublingual GABA supplement also worked wonders for me.

In my personal opinion, l-theanine (with or without caffeine) is by no means a miracle drug. I suffer from anxiety and depressed mood. In an attempt to alleviate my anxiety and/or depressed mood, I tried l-theanine (both with and without 2 cups of coffee) in dosages of 200 mg, 400 mg, and 600 mg. Unfortunately, I experienced no improvement in symptoms. Needless to say, l-theanine is not for me.
I take both and can tell when one is missing… GABA does obviously get in ur gut where a lot of serotonin receptors are. So the whole brain barrier is kinda irrelevant

It has long been thought that GABA is unable to cross the blood–brain barrier (BBB), but the studies that have assessed this issue are often contradictory and range widely in their employed methods. Accordingly, future research needs to establish the effects of oral GABA administration on GABA levels in the human brain, for example using magnetic resonance spectroscopy. There is some evidence in favor of a calming effect of GABA food supplements, but most of this evidence was reported by researchers with a potential conflict of interest. We suggest that any veridical effects of GABA food supplements on brain and cognition might be exerted through BBB passage or, more indirectly, via an effect on the enteric nervous system. We conclude that the mechanism of action of GABA food supplements is far from clear, and that further work is needed to establish the behavioral effects of GABA.

Why the disagreement? Well, a few things. Some studies used a molecule just like GABA in lieu of GABA, assuming the 1 extra OH group featured on 3-hydroxybutyric acid wouldn’t make a difference, but it may have. Since many studies don’t report the type of GABA used, it’s hard to compare results. Some studies administered their GABA by injecting it straight into animal’s body cavities, others by injecting it into veins.
Most importantly, the BBB permeability of GABA has never been studied in humans!
What we do know is that human’s BBB contains transporters for GABA, implying that GABA can enter/exit the brain through these channels. In mice it was found that GABA was removed from the brain 17 times faster than it entered.
This could explain the conflicting study results. It may not be that GABA cannot enter the brain, but just that it’s removed from it very rapidly.
GABA as a Supplement
Even if it cannot cross the BBB however, GABA could still be affecting your brain.
The enteric nervous system (ENS) is the network of neurons that control your gastrointestinal system. The ENS contains many GABA receptors, and GABA itself, and is connected to the brain through the vagal nerve. It’s been proposed that ingested GABA is able to affect the body even without crossing the BBB through its interactions with the ENS.

Sun-Theanine is a high quality and very effective form. You can definitely tell a difference when drinking coffee… theanine takes the jittery feeling away from caffeine
If you can drink a lot of alcohol to relax. I doubt that gaba will do anything for you. Since gaba and alcohol are cross tolerant i think.
Can concur. I take sun-theanine (supposed to be a better version of L-theanine) and it certainly works. I used to be a big rx pill head, so I was wary of an otc supplement. I was shocked at the effects of L-theanine. I recommend trying this for anxiety before getting on anything hard, like benzos.
All of this is going on in our bodies and most of us just have no clue at all. But for you and others to know the universe that exists in our bodies is just such a powerful treasure of knowledge and I want to know too the going ons of our bodies.

From somebody who fucked himself up with too much LSD and Shrooms as a younger fella, I can positively say GABA has been the only thing that helps me sleep. I have got horrible insomnia and anxiety. I would stay up days without sleep. Now I hit the bed and pass out! 750mg GABA each night has done more for me than Benadryl ever could. I know for a fact GABA works.
I like both i find Gaba relaxes me even more but more importantly the nerves in my back,it eases my deep arthritis pain.
A good tip for taking gaba or ltheanine is to crack the capsule open and squeez the powder under the tongue and let it dissolve then it will instantly get into your blood stream vs just swallowing a capsule and waiting a few hours for it to take affect. You can instantly feel GABA when it enters your blood stream its like a warming tingling sensation. Then you start to feel balanced after a few minutes try it.. Gaba has a sweet taste so don’t worry its not nasty tasting. Swallowing gaba capsules takes waaaay to long for it to take affect vs instant relief under the tongue try it I swear by it.
I started taking L-Theanine to assist in quitting nicotine gum and it has helped a lot. I haven’t chewed it in days. L-Theanine clears my mind and rids me of anxiety.
Theanine made me feel too weird. Like a stimulant effect not sedative. I could barely hold a conversation and my ability to focus was destroyed. I even tried to lower the dosages to 1/3 of what was recommended and got the same reaction. I just gave it away and my friend loves it and uses it on her aggressive dog too. Note I have adverse reactions to everything so unless you do too, I guess you can expect you’ll be fine.

I am about to start a benzo taper, the videos and some first hand accounts from people that are going through withdrawal hell and having trouble getting off these poison apples has prompted me to do as much research as possible. 35 years of dampening my altering my brain/CNS activity, I am ready to drink horse piss rather than go through the symptoms some of these unfortunate people describe. SSRI anti depressants, a beta blocker, and acupuncture are recommended by the late addiction psychiatrist Dr Stuart Kloda. The SSRIs occupy the newly opened Gaba receptors with a non addicting substance (and those of you who whine that Prozac or other SSRIs are addicting can keep quiet, I was on them as depression and anxiety have been constant companions my whole life and I could walk away from them at will). I purchased both GABA 750mg supplements and L theanine 200 mg supplements. I found taking 800mg of L theanine made me mellow. I am about to begin a slow taper off of Xanax which I took for 12 years, not knowing how hard it is for people to come off this class of drugs known as benzos. I took a GABA capsule and with the xanax it knocked me out for like 16 hours. So that will be used only for emergencies (intense withdrawals) I need any and all weapons, if you will, to win this battle. Amino acid and herbal supplements combined with exercise and acupuncture treatments is the plan.
I dose probably 1,400mg of L Theanine a day. Yes. Its great indeed. Although I do get the occasional headache I just use magnesium (another calming ingredient) to relax my blood vessels and end that headache.

Gaba supplement only works if you have a weak blood-brain barrier that allows it’s entry. If you want something that crosses blood-brain barrier and gives you increased Gaba try phenibut.
