The title says it all. As of 3pm EST today, a Federal Disaster Declaration was issued by President Trump. Among many, many things, the Stafford Act that was invoked has extremely broad and sweeping powers that flow from it.
For my hospital, at approximately 3:47pm, certain "regulators" were asked to cease their scheduled visit and return at another time. Given in my state that most places and stores were mandated to be closed, it was expected that many alcoholics, drug users, and others dependent on illicit substances would flood the ED, and we would be forced to find alternative means including using beer or wine from local establishments, or even use other alternative means or substances that are legal in our state but that ASHP would shit themselves over and try to revoke licenses.
After refusing to leave, local Law Enforcement were called and the "regulators" were frog marched out. As in their hands behind the back, elbows bent, backs arched, and in a choke hold walked out the front doors. One Officer actually removed the cover strap from their sidearm and placed their hand on it firmly when the useless bureaucrats protested and refused to leave.
As of our last site wide email, ASHP has no authority here whatsoever anymore, nor does any other regulatory body that isn't spelled out in the Stafford Act. Even transfer agreements between local hospitals specifying the who, when, and where are now considered void.
I am heartened that the draconian local response to unnecessary bureaucracy was swift and severe. However, I am worried that in the long term that ASHP and other harmful bodies will attempt to regain their lost but unnecessary influence.
