Do You React to Soy Like You React to Gluten? Many people report reacting to soy in a similar fashion as they do to wheat and other gluten grains. Now, soy is a pretty allergenic food—it’s one of the top allergens in the U.S.
4 So there’s no question that you could have a true allergy to soy.Soy itself is gluten-free. “Soy” may refer to soybeans or to the soy protein from soybeans, both of which are gluten-free. Is Soy Sauce Gluten-Free? Regular soy sauce is not gluten-free. Wheat is a primary ingredient in soy sauce, which surprises many people who are new to gluten-free diet.
Most soy sauce varieties are not gluten-free. However, tamari soy sauce is generally made without wheat and, therefore, gluten-free. The same goes for soy.
Soy sauce also contains gluten but is low in fructans. Beer comes to mind as well. These are off-limits on a gluten-free diet, yet unnecessary to restrict for the vast majority.
The other issue is that most people with digestive issues don’t ever fully recover on a gluten-free diet. This is why so many people with gluten intolerance or sensitivity also react to the protein casein, in dairy. While I don’t have hard numbers, it is well known that many celiacs are also intolerant of yeast.
It is common for soy and egg proteins to cause food intolerance symptoms as well. Some people also become intolerant of corn.Gluten is a protein in cereals such as wheat, barley, and rye.
A person with gluten intolerance or sensitivity may experience pain and bloating after eating foods that contain gluten.Gluten-free foods contain other allergens: When most people think of gluten, they think of the protein in wheat. But other foods including rye, oa.Gluten Free Bread Damages Celiacs A recent study found that patients with celiac disease can react to ‘gluten free’ bread made with maize (corn) protein.
Serum IgA was measured against the prolamine in corn. Previous studies have found similar reactions with corn in patients with gluten sensitivity. Many of these studies find that the gluten in corn is similar enough to the gluten in wheat.A 1999 study in the Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology showed that some adults with celiac disease experienced diarrhea, headache, nausea and flatulence whenever they ate a tiny amount of soy even on a gluten-free diet.
Soy did not react, and neither did corn or other grains. Not allergic to wheat, as Celiac disease is not a true allergy. Confirmed when wheat did not react on my skin test.
The whole soy thing is confusing to me.Why soy-free? The words “vegan food” for so many people implies that you should eat meat & dairy substitutes.
Although I see them as great transition products for carnivores going herbivores, fake meats and dairy gives in to the mainstream idea that our food should be planned around the protein. Some people can eat trace amounts of soy without a problem, such as soy lecithin or soy oil, and others have a reaction to even a tiny amount. Soy allergies Soy is one of the top food allergies in children, with allergies overall affecting 5 percent of children under the age of 5.Pure soybeans do not have gluten in them, since the gluten protein responsible for reactions in celiac disease and gluten sensitivity only occurs in the grains wheat, barley and rye. But unfortunately, that’s not the end of the story for soy and gluten.
Soybeans commonly are grown in rotation with wheat crops.Only 8% of Adult Patients Healed on a Gluten-Free Diet A 2009 study in The Journal of Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics looked at 465 Celiac disease patients and found only 8% of adult patients reached “histological normalization” after following a gluten-free diet for 16 months, meaning their gut tissue completely recovered to that of a healthy person.Soybeans contain protein that can trigger an allergic reaction in a small number of children. Many children who react to cow’s milk protein also react to soy protein.
Allergy action plan Allergy action plans are recommended to advise staff what to do if a known allergen is ingested. The action plan should be developed with the child’s family and treating team (docto.

Wow! I learn so much from u. I learned from watching your PMDD video that I was misdiagnosed with major depressive disorder. Whenever i took antidepressants, i would feel better in 3 days and the docs kept telling me i was wrong and it doesn’t work like that. I was finally dx with PMDD last year and now i understand what those docs didn’t. I also used to suffer from eczema and AdHd and I used to get debilitating brain fog. I’ve had digestive issues since birth. I learned i was gluten intolerant in 2014 and it changed my life. No more eczema, fatigue, diarrhea, or brain fog. AdHd gone with this and avoiding most food additives. I also have hypoglycemia so…that contibutes to depression, anxiety, and AdHd symptoms… i went vegan and that completely changed. I used to suffer from random boughts of orthostatic hypotension and was told it was just my body. Going vegan changed that. I can jump up from lying down first thing in the morning now without collapsing. What a difference the right diet makes!
I have a weird form of eczema where my whole hand gets rashed. It gets to the point where I have to wrap my hand in gauze, and vaseline. Ive been wondering if this actually is eczema or something else. No idea what else it would be, but it’s not really like normal eczema, which my mom has. It’s gotten better as I get older, and winters (when it’s at its worst) have gotten better. Just wanna know if you have a different opinion than my doctor (who says its eczema).
thanks 4 proving us your a fool and don’t know anything comp to the rest
My Doctor tested me with a general rast blood test (milk, cod, peanut etc ), NHS testing is limited, which showed nothing special however my total IgE was 1716 ku/L (Normal range 0 81). They said I was reacting to something but they don’t know what. After waiting 5 months for a specialist appointment it was cancelled due to covid 19 so I am back on the waiting list
In the meantime I keep having random allergic reactions where my throat closes, throat is dry, I cannot breathe, my eyes swell, sometimes I get a rash that takes ages to heal, sometimes I am sick. I haven’t had one for a while (bar my usual hayfever) but this one today was horrible and I nearly called an ambulance. It’s been about 5 hours and I feel weak, dizzy and unwell.
My doctor just says they can’t do anything until my clinic appointment. In the meantime I feel like my next reaction will land me in the hospital.
I was going to pay for a York Test but now this video basically says it’s rubbish so now I’m back to hopeless!
The amount of people who smirk at you when you say you have an allergy is massive but its causing me so much worry people don’t understand
That boy @ 2:52 is either really into the speech or he digging that girl
Did you lose any weight once going gluten free? Also how long did it take for you to get relief from symptoms?
I love that you two made this video. I hear people speaking about it frequently with such misinformation that they heard from someone or read off the internet. Hopefully people will learn from this. ♥️
thanks for making this, i have not been diagnosed with gluten intolerance yet but my body reacts badly when i eat gluten, i have had digestive, hormonal, skin and neurological issues when i eat gluten. i just decided to go gluten free a few days ago its been 5 days now and i cant imagine my life has been amazing, no digestive issues, better skin and best of all stable happiness, if there is anyone seeing this, i beg you. take this seriously especially if you have problems when you eat gluten. Just go a few days off gluten and pay attention to changes, i promise you will let that bread, yummy pasta and donut out of your life. Although it might be tough to go GF because we have been eating it all our life and its yummy but from experience life is better without gluten for me and i have made a promise to myself to go off gluten forever, best decision i have made yet. Okay i think i have said enough.
I am one of those rare people with a gluten allergy (I get hives). I am an adult (got my allergy to gluten at the age of 23). Oh and the best part is I HATE it! If I could eat gluten I would. On a gluten-free diet it is really hard to find a good 7-grain bread or a 12-grain bread and what I wouldn’t do to get a croissant (my life has never been complete since I gave these up)!
On the flip side of things, there are so many more things available to me now than there were when I first became allergic. And as much of a boon this fad has done for me having options, it also has become misleading. There are a few pizza places and restaurants that offer gluten-free options, but cook them in the same ovens and areas as gluten foods (causing contamination). Because gluten-free sells, more of these psudo gluten-free places are cropping up. it’s irritating.
Great video! You may check with your doctor to rule out celiac disease, it is very serious.
I have diabetes and depression and stomach problem and asthma what diet I can use
Can an intolerance to a food show up in another form besides digestion issues? For example, my daughter gets severe congestion/ blocked nasal cavity including a headache when she has dairy. Is that an allergy or intolerance?
For curiosity sake: You mention that diabetes can be linked to celiac disease, as well as folic and vit. D deficiency. What are your thoughts on the allegations that PCOS and insulin production therein could be affected by gluten? I was diagnosed with PCOS abt. a year ago, with insulin malfunctions and folic acid deficiencies (as well as a vit. D deficiency diagnosed several years prior) and a nurse at the time suggested I reduce or eliminate gluten from my diet to improve my insulin systems. I have never seen anything specifically saying that this /isn’t/ a thing, but also have yet to find a source that I really feel confident in that says it /is/ a thing.
I have a non-celiac gluten sensitive I am 13 I got diagnosed at 7 but I started having symptoms at 4 we didn’t know what made me feel so bad for 3 years because my doctor hadn’t heard of it.
Thanks for the video. I was bed bound. Completely debilitated. Sleeping 17 hours a night and being awake for 3 and needing to go back to sleep. Joint pain. The worst brain fog you could possibly imagine. I couldn’t even read. I went off gluten 5 weeks ago and it has completely changed my life. Add. Depression and every mentored symptom is now gone.
Thing I don’t get is whether these effects associated with gluten are due to gluten itself or due to people having killed off their healthy gut bacteria necessary for digesting gluten (with excessive use of antibaterials, that eventually make their way to the gut)? If its the later, then they should be associated with loss of gut bacteria, not with gluten.
I can definitely attest to the fact that your allergy test cannot say how your body will react. When my allergy doctor did the nut test, I tested positive for a peanut allergy, but my body also reacted more severely than what my test stated I should react. I still remember how shocked my doctor was as I was going in and out of consciousness
I have a wheat allergy, as well as whey & casein protein (milk). That stuff is in everything and the stuff that doesn’t have either is so expensive
Dwight Shrute: nodding intensifies
Doctor Mike: nodding intensifies
Im gluten sensitive and it effects me by giving me skin disease. My doctor said it was common in people that have gluten sensitivity and that there’s no way to get ridw of it once it there, but it will get less strong. this causes me to have “permanent eczema attacks” as I say to people when they see my back. uts not gross, but painful in a way people with eczema ( which I have too. along with lactose sensitivity). a constant need to scratch my back till the point of bleeding. it I rib Mt back the erong way while sleeping, no more sleep for me. if someone rubs their hand down my back. well, I’m screwed, so please, excuse me looking in complete pain while I kindly answer “my back just hurts” when you ask if I’m okay when in my mind I’m killing you.:)
I tried this for a while. You’re right, it is not easy, but it did make a big difference in how I felt. I went mostly gluten free and was off antidepressants for 5 years and using supplements like D3 Bcomplex, Omega’s ect. It was just hard to keep up with it and it’s also expensive and not covered under insurance. I found if I fell off the wagon with it my depression would slip back in…I’d lose motivation to do all the work, exercise, nutrition…and back to square one. This last visit to the doctor, I started back up on the antidepressants. During my intake when I was asking for them. The nurse was asking me if I was still taking and she went through the list of supplements I was on. It occurred to me…I had been depressed since summer and that’s when I stopped. I don’t know what’s better because even the supplements have certain pros and cons. The biggest con was just price and my inability to keep it up. Antidepressants for a while to keep me steady and I will keep a log and report back. Honestly…I would like to understand the cause…is it gluten? diet? boredom? Past/unresolved issues? A curse? Lack of brain chemicals? PMDD? Perimenopause? Hereditary? Ancestral?
Why anyone would choose to be gluten free makes no sense to me. I have celiac disease and I hate being gluten free
In the beginning of this episode where it says that type 1 diabetes people are more likely to have celiac dieses, well actually my brother is type 1 diabetic and he does not have this, so I’m assuming he is just one of the “lucky” ones that this didn’t happen to? Also when it talks about going on a gluten free diet (unless you are allergic or whatever) it is actually really bad for you. Carbohydrates are a macronutrient, in other words your body needs a lot of that nutrient to be healthy. Well when you stop eating gluten (a large carb source) your body will start “destroying” itself per say and break down vital nutrients so your body has enough of that nutrient. So unless you are allergic or intolerant, eat up!!
Did she really just recite government health propaganda like grains is the only way to get B vitamins. Maybe eat some veggies. Typical sheep, grains are full of pesticides-and heavy metals. Then people wonder why everyone has cancer smh lol
Now this is interesting, I never knew that a sensitivity to gluten and having depression can be related. I have a sensitivity to gluten where if I eat past a certain amount such as if I eat too much bread or rice in a day or it can be within a period of a few days, I will get extreme abdominal pain. Sometimes the abdominal pain can be so bad that in the past I have had to just lie in bed because I cannot move with the pain. And painkillers don’t get rid of the pain.I also suffer on and off from depression and I get headaches quite a lot. So maybe it could all be linked. I don’t always get the depression symptoms though if I eat too much gluten, but I do very often get the abdominal pain
I have no digestive problems (bloating, diarrhea/constipation) with gluten, I have gluten ataxia.
I miss my Subway sandwiches! I can’t even be near flour dust… ingestion through breathing it in.
Trace amounts starts the neurological problems within 15-30 minutes. I end up disoriented, start stumbling around, have memory loss…followed by intense feelings of air hunger for 2-4 days after, and irregular heartbeat.
I am a gluten intolerant for 9 months already and I know all of that you say. I decided to open my channel with my journey. I have lost 49 pounds. I feel awesome now.
Thank you for covering this issue. I lost my 22 month old son in ’94 to allergic reaction to an unknown food allergy. I have another son (15) who is severely allergic to milk and eggs. The anxiety is very real for us (he also failed a cooked egg food challenge after the allergist sent us home thinking all safe). No restaurants or food prepped by anyone but our immediate family. I would love to have 2 compassionate physicians such as yourselves help us navigate this….because it is a stressful journey (especially as he grows older and is “out from under my wing.”)
docter am from pakistan and i suffered from dysthemia and then after one year of therapy i hit the full blown mania and now i am suffering from cyclothamia. i also suffer from ocd. but the major and genetic problem of mine is bipolar. i used sertraline hcl and antidepressent with anti pshycotic. but no good response. can you help me please.
This is research based on the microbiotagut brain axis? What other foods affect symptoms of depression or anxiety? Could omega fatty acids improve brain health for example and increase inhibitory neurotransmitters for anxiety?
From a person who’s health and life were ruined by pseudoscientific woowoo, I thank you for the time and energy you put into educating the population, Dr. Mike. You always produce high quality content, and make complex topics really entertaining and approachable to a wide audience. People don’t realize how particularly dangerous false information can be.
DOGS SHOULD NOT HE EATING GLUTEN, why is that a thing to be like, “Wow, people are so dumb! They even pay to feed their animals biologically appropriate food!” There are SO many proteins, they’re not all the same or equal. They have very specific shapes and functions, that’s why people (and animals) respond differently to gluten than meat. What the hell.
I have gluten sensitivity issues as well. I have been gluten free for 8 years now and it makes a huge difference. The last couple of years though I have been experiencing severe joint pain and all the other symptoms mentioned in your video. Turns out that corn is the new evil for me and it’s worse than gluten because corn is in everything. This includes medications (corn starch, sorbitol etc). I now have to get my medications compounded. Corn is hidden in foods (flavors, spices, maltodextrin, sorbitol etc.) There is no laws that require corn to be listed, therefore they can hide it.
Good video doc! It’s too bad that the pseudo-scientific/quantifiable self movement has such an affinity for gluten. As if it’s the solution for everything.
For sure I am not about to test all those truths just mentioned in dichotomous thinking about my pincushion already done for me allergy testing results using only online info as a convenient excuse to go out and buy a pet dog after my real allergist told me not to..
Interesting! I get really annoyed by the gluten free bandwagon, now it appears I might have to try it for myself! Time to eat humble pie on that one, may be!
To society: Just because someone doesn’t eat gluten it does not mean that they are “hipster” or “white” or whatever. Gluten can actually make someone really sick. Just like dairy or soy or meat. Some people have actual allergies to those foods.
Also, she’s a really good speaker! Her presentation skills are incredible for this age!
Interesting thing with allergies (or things like allergy)you can get new allergies in your lifetime and they also can dissapear (true?). For example I have nerver, ever had an allergy from walnuts, but one day I ate handful of them and ended up in hospital because my eyes were completely swollen (they were so swollen that they were completely closed) and I had hard time to breath, my head was spinning. After that I spent all night in hospital, they put the system on, put 2 different kind of medication inside me and all night checked my blood pressure etc.. After that I didn’t eat these nuts for about a year or so until at my family members birthday I ate a cake, it turned out to be walnut cake but nothing happened. After that I started to eat walnuts normaly and I’m ok, so idk what happened.
I have diabetes T1 and celiacs, got them both in 2010, 2 months apart. It was much more difficult to eat gf then, but now it is MUCH easier.
However, nothing is more annoying than a non-celiac miseducating people, when they eat something with gluten or don’t care about contamination and then lie and say it’s “gluten-free”. Sounds petty, but it can be disastrous for me when I am served food that isn’t gluten free because a non-ceoliac said it was.
Do what you want, but please THINK of those who actually suffer from gluten
Incredible poise, regardless of your age! You are bound for greatness!
have you ever heard of Gut Health? Clearly not. Is stool consistency not at least a small indicator of gut health? Diarrhea: bad. Constipation: bad. But runny or loose stools is cool? Especially when you may notice that your symptoms are directly related to gluten consumption. And please, stop complaining about how much money GF companies are making on their products. How much more money is made from gluten-containing products? Ever thought about that? And please don’t rely completely on doctors who have virtually no training on nutrition and gut health. They are taught to suppress symptoms with drugs and surgery. Wake up America!
Impressive. Seriously impressive diagnostic information there, and it likely change many people’s lives who come into your office wondering what’s wrong with their memory.
I had to go to many, many (11) different GPs and ENTs (over 3-4 years) trying to figure out why my white blood cell count was so elevated, why I was extremely fatigued, with a constantly sore throat, incredibly painful lymph nodes, cystic acne (no family history of skin problems), memory loss, and recurrent yeast and sinus infections. One day I was on the subway going from Manhattan to Queens to the regular nail salon I’d been to dozens of times before over the previous 2 years. Once I was on the train, I could no longer remember what the correct stop was. I actually got off one stop BEFORE I was supposed to get off, and finally realized I had to get back on the train and go further. I realized how it must feel to have Alzheimer’s. I was 25 years old when that happened, and I was about to give up hope of ever having a healthy, normative life.
I got lucky a few days later when an acquaintance told me about a doctor who believed in preventative medicine that was just down the street from where we lived. She was the only physician able to connect the many dots. She read the questionnaire I filled out, listened as I answered her questions in her office, and in the exam room she asked me to open my mouth as wide as possible, and she looked inside, turning my head up toward the light and from left to right. Without doing any other tests she said, “You have food allergies, but let’s do some blood tests to confirm my hypothesis.” All the other physicians and specialists that had previously looked into my mouth at the inflamed red spots on either side of my epiglottis never made the connection. Nicolette Francey, MD quit practicing a few years later due to her own health issues, but she is still an author on health-related issues https://nicoletteasselin.com/
My blood work showed I had allergies to wheat, yeast, corn, barley, eggs, tomatoes, avocado, potato, watermelon, cantaloupe, and that was just the food allergies. My white blood cell count was so elevated they referred to it as an autoimmune response saying that my immune system was attacking my body and killing off red blood cells, causing anemia.
I would have to immediately begin a radical change in diet that was just the first part of the healing process. It was the foods I ate daily that were causing an immune response. The next step was to kill off the overgrowth of yeast in my intestines, and that took much longer. I not only took one tablet of Diflucan daily, but also Nystatin from a compounding pharmacy. This was hundreds of dollars of prescriptions a month, which was a lot of money back in the mid-90s…a lot more than that is today. The worst part of this 3-prong change was giving up all forms of sugar, including fruit of any kind. I did not embrace these changes but rather understood that if I wanted to live, I was going to have to spend at least 6 months being physically miserable, while all that yeast died off, and allowed my immune system to cease its attack, and then another year plus for the lining of my intestinal wall to regain at least some of its integrity so that things weren’t permeating the paper thin walls into my body causing yet another immune battle to commence.
I realize you are an MD, but you’re also a psychologist. The psychologist Dr. Francey recommended was a nice man, but he never made the connection, either, even with complete access to all my medical records. The fact that you have this information in your head and know it so well that you can effectively communicate it to others will be life-changing for people.
This is why I say your knowledge is impressive.
Had the 1st, 2nd or 3rd physician been a knowledgeable diagnostician, it could’ve saved me thousands of dollars and possibly prevented the full downward spiral of my health to the point that my own company’s corporate physician told me I was too sick to work. I ended up losing 2 full years of my life recovering, thousands and thousands of dollars…on my income alone…in one of the most expensive cities on the planet, and I had comprehensive 80/20 coverage. It’s no wonder I didn’t become homeless. I had very little savings being so young, and my company’s disability coverage barely covered my wildly inexpensive rent-stabilized studio apartment. What I did have was large credit card limits, and it was credit that allowed me to cover the prescriptions that killed of the yeast that was sucking the life out of me.
Thank you for the time you invested to learn this information. It’s one of the things that differentiates an ordinary MD from an extraordinary diagnostician. Some physicians seem to forget that their primary purpose is as an effective diagnostician. If the diagnosis is inaccurate, everything else is unlikely to be helpful and may even be more damaging than doing nothing at all.
What if you feel like you’re dying when you eat wheat stuff. Like idk if I have celiac disease or wheat allergy. My blood pressure goes crazy and I get shaky and super thirsty. Went to the er 4 times and they said I was fine. So I just stay away from gluten until I get insured again and can be diagnosed
I have severe atopic dermatitis and just decided to try going gluten free to see if it helps! Hoping it helps:)
My 2 youngest children and my husband all have food and environmental allergies. It’s the worst. My 3 yr old has gone into anaphylaxis 3 times and his first allergic reaction happened when he was an infant still nursing. He reacted to dairy I had consumed. My 11 month old reacted to an egg I ate.
I dont need to eat dairy anyway because I get crazy mucus in my throat and my eyes get puffy. I keep doing it though -_
Cooking for my family is so frustrating. The wrong ingredient leads to vomiting, rash, eczema, anyphalatic reaction.
I cried giving an epi to my baby when he was only one.
I have keratosis Polaris and I get really bad allergies. I’m also always bloated. This is going to be hard to cut out gluten
What a bunch of clickbait. 3:40 the celiac foundation website states that those with gluten intolerance (non-celiac) are diagnosed based on rechallenge/dechallenge from eating gluten. A health care professional isn’t going to provide any test to confirm this. Sensitivity has also been estimated with prevalence of 1%.
Do u have casein intolerance and did u have tonsillectomy as well, i want to know that does tonsil removal is common between people like us.
I have a huge belly after consuming gluten every time I comeback normal on my blood results but yet my son is wheat sensitive, I feel tired after consuming gluten after a sandwich I will feel super bloated and immediately fall asleep not even walks help I need to be strong and learn to say no especially at family dinners I no longer care if others get offended if I say no it’s my body I choose what I eat and don’t eat.its been like this for years I always look pregnant,,,,let’s be strong and say no to what no longer serves us!
I hate pasta because of this, my girlfriend likes my pasta so much, but it always makes us sick, tired, abdominal pain, gut inflamation.
This is a life changing video for me. After working out and eating very clean, I noticed that my stomach was always huge, bloated and in mild pain, no matter what. Then by chance I wondered if my constant bloated belly might be related to gluten(not just dairy), after observing someone avoiding gluten. I’m almost a week gluten free and I’ve felt a huge difference. I’ve almost got a flat stomach which is rare even though I’m slim already. Hearing that depression and adhd symptoms are related to gluten sensitivity made me realise gluten may have been the culprit all along!! I have adhd symptoms and depression so I’m looking forward to see where I am in 6 weeks!:)
When ever I eat gluten free, I get sick. Then again, all food pretty much makes me sick Soo..
I had an allergy test done for various factors and turns out, I’m allergic to pretty much everything outside the house (cat, dog, cows, horses, every tree they test for, and nature in general) but I don’t know if I should say I’m allergic to the sun, or intolerant to the sun. I mean, 15 minutes is enough to get my skin red and blotchy, but I still can go outside without dying. Dr. Mike, how would you categorize my reaction?
Isn’t it true that NCGS is a transient condition? If you’re not lacking the enzymes (intolerant) or diagnosed with Celiac, can’t you heal your gut and reintroduce it?
Dr. Mike, can you do something on odd allergies, like allergies to cold. I seemed to have gotten a generalized cold allergy several years back, also flared up when sweating or swimming, that seems to have resolved itself, or mostly did, after several years. I’m trying to understand what happened and if I should still be concerned. It didn’t respond to an ice cube test, but I would just generalized hives (usually not itchy), on my hands primarily if out in the cold, but if sweating or in water also on my body. One day i was outside when it was cool and drizzly, and I got redness and intense itching on my thighs, but no actual hives that day. Anyways, it’s just the weirdest thing how this came out of nowhere, then seemed to fade away after around 7 or so years of it.
You did very well. You were so poised for someone your age on that stage. This 2 time TEDx speaker is giving you a .
And now its time for actual facts. This is a TED event after all, even if its just TEDx.. Gluten is proven to not be bad for you if you do not have Celiac disease. This used to be common knowledge you know.. When we figured out that we used something called the scientific method, and its the only way we can make out general truth. What you are doing is what we call inductive reasoning. Where you observe a thing, and presume that is a truth that applies universally. So its about as good as me seeing a blue car, and then stating that all cars must therefore be blue. You knowing a person that got better health after not eating gluten does not provide any evidence that its true that gluten is bad for people. Because we already know that its not bad for people. Where are your parents? they should have told you this before letting you on that stage.
That moment when you hate pizza and you hear someone else mention their hatred for pizza…
I know, I’m so unrelatable.
The only thing I like about being gluten free is that I have my own little shelf of foods and sometimes some gluten free sweets and that shelf is all mine since I’m the only one in my family who’s currently gluten free and my younger brothers can’t eat any of it
I was on a keto diet for quite some time and felt great. After losing the weight, I decided to reintroduce some carbs, including bread. Two days later, I had this sudden sadness that I used to have before, feeling blue for no reason. I instantly recognized that old familiar feeling and now I think it was the gluten. I will continue to reintroduce carbs, but gluten free only. Thank you!!!
Why on earth do we humans even eat gluten? do you people know that we have polluted the entire planet with crops that are genetically modified and that have 10 times more gluten instead of planting other crops that are gluten free….. gluten is as dangerous and as addictive as tobacco… it has 0 nutritional values and the body hates it and attacks every gluten protein that we eat… gluten is the source of brain fog and mental illness, it contributes to poor decision making and causes pain in the body
Great job with this presentation and I totally agree! You did a fantastic job! I hav celiac too, and I’ve also seen th benefits of gluten free for others. Would love to visit ur bakery one day!
We’re the people in the study tested for Celiacs or Wheat Allergies before they were accepted in the study? I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease about two years ago. When I look back I see the possibility that I had silent Celiac Disease for years, perhaps decades. I would get canker sores and pains in my sides and back for years. Only when the classic symptoms and weight loss kick in did I start to suspect something. The blood test and endoscop confirmed it. So after going GF and getting the weight loss and intestinal damage under control, I noticed that I no longer get canker sores or those odd pains in my back and sides.
The point I want to make here is that some of you with a gluten sensitivity may actually have silent Celiacs Disease! Ask your doctor to do the blood test to make sure. If your doctor doesn’t think it’s necessary, then you can get it done yourself through an online lab. The full Celiac Panel is generally under $200. I get the transglutaminase IGA test done to check how well I’m holding to a gluten free diet and it only cost about $80. So if you want peace of mind, get tested, then follow up every five to ten years. I wish I would have known to do this earlier, but now I’m making sure my adult children are getting tested, and I will remind them to do so ever few years.
I think people aren’t using their EpiPens because they are prohibitively expensive to replace, and they want to make sure it’s actually 100% necessary before they do. EpiPens can be hundreds of dollars to replace. The cheapest I could find for a 2-pack EpiPen without insurance was with a Walmart coupon for $250.
If you have insurance, and your plan doesn’t kick in until you meet the high deductible, and the plan doesn’t discount prescriptions, you’re paying retail cost, which means at that same Walmart, even though you have insurance, you’re paying $987.95 for that 2-pack of EpiPens. That’s rent money.
I can understand why people don’t replace expired ones, and why they’re reluctant to use them when needed. They’re more expensive than gold because this is America. Ain’t capitalism grand?
Did you consider doing an at home gluten intolerance test and which one would you use.
Thank you for making this video. I’ve been in the “testing my body” phase for awhile, scared to commit to a gluten free diet even though I display all symptoms and KNOW it’s what I need to do. Your video really helped give me some clarity and motivation.
Have all of it. Much more difficult than it may seem. Quinoa isn’t good, nor is millet…
A gluten free diet does not have to be healthier, in Sweden people with coeliac disease often have more deficiencies than other people. I wish this presentation was less bias and more scientific…
Bruh I’ve been gluten free for about 2 years now and I don’t feel any better (or worse when I eat it (I tried a breaded item a few months ago)) and in fact over the past 2 years my depression has been worsening
when i seen it was a little girl i was kinda negative, but she did very well.
Have to get tested soon. I have some symptoms, and it getting worse. I ate 5 fishsticks and my stomach I felt bad for hours.
2:20 you can see bear in the bottom left corner. He pops his head out for a couple seconds
Fad diets are dumb. I don’t need anyone telling me what to eat unless they’re a real doctor and I have a real health problem.
If you’re not diagnosed with a disease that cannot with stand gluten in your diet then I’d suggest you just stick to a regular healthy diet. Corn in all forms, rice in all forms, and certain flours are free of bad gluten. A person that can with stand gluten probably needs the gluten.
I don’t like pizza cuz I’m lactose intolerant.if I eat dairy I will get sick and throw up and get a really bad stomach ache
My daughter has a gluten, egg, & chicken allergy in addition to ASD, ADHD, PTSD, and severe GAD. She eats a great deal of processed gluten free foods plus sodas and Powerade. Drinking water makes her nauseous. She has a great deal of joint pain, headaches, sinus congestion and “dissociation” she calls it. She often has lymph node swelling which is how we discovered some of her allergies. Also IBS. She lost her health insurance after I became disabled and I’m wondering if she is having difficulty from more food allergies.
My parent is on bulletproof etc and only buys gluten free stuff and so she also forces me to eat this way. Which means I can’t have sugar or bread. I can’t wait untill I’m an adult…
(Yes I talked about it with my parent but I still have to eat this way). My life sucks
I would carry my EpiPen (I’m allergic to strawberries) except it’s $200 and my insurance won’t cover it. My doctor has tried everything to get them to cover it.
After years of my sister having digestive issues as a child she was finally diagnosed with a gluten sensitivity, a gluten free diet wasn’t particulary popular back then so every week my mother would make her bread and cakes from scratch so she wouldn’t have to feel left out at school. Years later I found out I had a gluten and a refined sugar sensitivity when I was around 10 or so and I’ve been gluten and sugar free now for 5 years. My symptoms were always terrible, I got shaky, nauseous, weak, tired, achy and my anxiety gets 100000x times worse. It’s funny how it affects people so differently. I’m also vegan now so I have to get so creative in the kitchen but gluten free and vegan diets are becoming more and more popular, heck I went to lunch with a friend and got a gluten free vegan pizza! The market is truly expanding rapidly. Go Sophia though, she did absolutely brilliantly, so well spoken for her age! ♡
great presentation I am 12 and I was diagnosed with celiac disease at three I could not walk i was vomitting and huge sore stomacs I was that weak and even today I am anemic great job
I understand that a lot of people need to be on this diet and that it was developed in order to help people with the Celiac disease. It is so annoying though when people go on gluten free diets just as a “health nut” concern. Most of them don’t even know what gluten does for you. Sometimes it just seems like they want to be gluten free so they can say it, but then their diet suggests that they obviously don’t understand what has gluten: beer, pasta, or even pickles. If you think you need a gluten free diet then go to the doctor first so you aren’t excluding this from your diet in vain.
I have Caeliac i actually had anorexia because of it, but now i am happy and healthy as a ten year old gymnast although i am still very small but that is just my build remeber to care for yourself!
Why is Stukus places so much lower than Mike? It’s a bit weird visually.
I have asthma and a ton of allergies which I take allergy shots for. This was very informative to me even as being well aware of allergies. I’d like to see more of this kind of series.
How about this Health triage, stop telling people what does and does not bother them.
I can not stand know it all so called health experts who do not know it all.
“Doctors aren’t trying to pitch you something. They aren’t trying to get more money.” Meanwhile, doctors taking cash payouts from Novartis for every patient they get on a Novartis prescription.
Is it true that gluten is an inflammatory? I have psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, and in hopes that I could get rid of some inflammation, I cut out gluten. Are you telling me that I could have been drinking beer and eating delicious pasta this whole time? Asking for a friend.
Appreciate Video clip! Sorry for chiming in, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you researched Fanabraal Toned Tiraspol (do a search on google)? It is an awesome one of a kind guide for sliming down naturally without exercise without the headache. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my cousin finally got great results with it.
Люблю твой канал. Смотрю и убиваю сразу двух зайцев: 1. Учу английский от носителя, 2. Получаю полезную инфу. Подскажи, please what I have to do with my allergie. У меня аллергия на холод, при чем даже летом, если хоть немножко прохладно, покрываюсь красными пятнами, которые очень чешутся. Спасибо:)
Went gluten free almost 10 years ago. Reversed autoimmune issues that were bad enough I was starting the process of applying for disability. No one ever “diagnosed” me so I’m not a part of any data set. Unfortunately sometimes we don’t have data, we have anecdotes but it doesn’t make reality any different.
Thank you really much for the video! I have since 2 month this strange general malaise and I have sometimes stomach ache and some strange spasm, I feel also very tired and a bit sad and depressed and I really don’t know what it is. The doctor told me I have a bad vitamin d deficiency and a bit of Candida but now that I listen to this it may be this… isn’t it?
Unless you have celiac disease, wheat allergy, or some other medically diagnosed intolerance, there is absolutely no reason not to eat gluten.
It is important to say the world number one specialist on gluten Alessio Fasano says gluten is a protein that cant be digested completely by human, cause gut leakiness in every body and is toxic for everybody long term, funny how gluten is the latin word for glue, enjoy eating glue.

I feel like I have a lot of minor allergies but I don’t have a way of figuring out which.
When I went to the GP with coeliac they immediately tried to push anti depresents on me instead of a blood test
I’m not going to give you my anecdotal evidence. I’m aware that most people probably don’t have gluten sensitivity, and if I’m ever not satisfied with the evidence that I’m in the margins of the rare exception, I’m sure there will be plenty more opportunities in my life to suddenly feel terrible, retroactively find out I accidentally ate gluten, and be reassured.
I’m also not going to give the speech about how this is a meaningless argument because of how it makes life easier for people with real celiacs. Helpful or not, if this is a scam, the people deserve to know, and I respect your attempt to shed light on it.
I AM however going to yell at you for citing the Peter Gibson study. Gibson can say that he wanted to do a “more rigorous” study all day long, but if you read the publication itself, not just the science news articles where Gibson promoted his findings, you’ll see that the methodology is no better than the first study. It uses under forty people as well, still some of the volunteers were randomly pulled based on self-identification (so gee, I wonder if, while studying an over-publicized, over-diagnosed condition, they accidentally brought in some hypochondriacs), and even more of the test subjects bailed halfway through because of symptoms (which were experienced in the constant group as well as the control, so it was attributed to a placebo effect). Also, did I mention that gluten-specific symptoms were experienced in EIGHT PERCENT OF PATIENTS?
Yeah, eight percent of less than 37 people; I wouldn’t recommend using that as proof that gluten sensitivity isn’t a thing. Is it smaller than what our culture treats it like? Sure, but to reference the study as if it found nothing is intellectually dishonest (and I’m more talking to the people with weird fixations on debunking GI, not Healthcare Triage). And I’m not saying that that means the first Gibson study was right. I’m in a situation where my anecdotal evidence suggests GI is real, and I can’t double-check that assumption because doing so on purpose would be an inequitable risk. But I agree that the “Proof of Gluten Intolerance” study is inadequate. It’s just that two stopped clocks don’t make a right.
Thank you for being so willing to share you knowelage and get others to do the same however I’d like to point out that many migraine suffers have food sensitivities, like I have to avoid steva because like 2 mouthfuls of a drink/food containing the stuff means I’m laid up for a week with intense migraines.
Great post Aaron is a Democrat but he is quite rational when he discusses issues where he is an expert. I am only half kidding here.
I get deathly ill from eating gluten. I sweat profusely, throw up, my stomach goes into extreme pain and more. I was recently diagnosed with gluten sensitivity but was told that blood test the doctor took is often wrong with patients who have true celiac. I’m still natively new to the GF thing. I have dystonia, a neurological disorder, but since I’ve stopped eating gluten most of the involuntary tics I had have from the dystonia subsided. I’m wondering if gluten can cause extensive hair loss because my hair was hair started coming out in handfuls and my doctor had no idea what was causing it. Recently my pizza was cross contaminated in a restaurant and their reply to my complain was so insensitive. One of my doctors says he thinks the reason for so many gluten allergies and people getting deathly ill when they eat gluten is the genetic engineering with our wheat (and other grains). I have several friends who don’t eat gluten for health sake though they aren’t allergic and don’t have a sensitivity issue with it. Since the cross contamination incident I’m very leery about eating restaurants.
I went gluten free and it changed my life forever! Thank you for the video:)
This guy’s a joke! He rants about the prices of the moronic gluten-free diet craze, but look at the hideous costs of his own profession!
Me? My shopping is limited to the outside walls of the food store where least processed foods are displayed
Thank you very much, I have Lupus and it’s been suggested several times that No gluten would cure me. I never bought into it, it seemed like a fad to me. I have no more doubt.
Unnecessary, sure. But hell, if it doesn’t hurt people, and it makes them feel better, I got no problem with it. Like acupuncture. Doesn’t hurt people, makes people feel better, go for it.
Unless of course you use either in replace of actual treatment. In which case, I’ma smack you, fool.
Shout out to rare allergies and intolerances
Alium-intolerance here ✊
Allergic to Sodium Laureth Sulfate (hygiene products; deodorant, showergel, shampoo etc.)
Also hayfever
Okay then. What about the tests reactions to various foods? Are those legitimate? I don’t even know the tests are called, and I know that makes it difficult to say. Some family members have been tested and come up positive for things. Have you heard of crossover grains? Lest you think I’m challenging you, I would love to just eat wheat instead of the gluten free diet my family went on together. I’ll still support the local dedicated gluten free bakery though.
I have ibs so that means I’m lactose fructose and gluten free
But getting a Dr to actually LISTEN and try to find the ROOT cause of daily joint pain and digestive issues is difficult.
Sorry but I do not agree. Gluten free has helped people with gut issues like candida and leaky gut and H phylori. It also helps with autoimmune disease symptoms. Celiac disease is an old disease. One of many associated with gluten. Gluten sensitivity is an issue just as much if not more than celiac
My friend’s wife has celiacs disease and she regularly mocks this new diet fad where people avoid gluten unnecessarily. She has to avoid it by necessity; these people shouldn’t act like they have to.
I don’t eat a gluten free diet by any means, but I do often opt for gluten free products over non-gluten free. Why? Because of taste. I don’t really like the way most gluten-y things taste for example I hate the taste and consistency of pasta and only like bread if it is completely toasted/stale/crunch, never chewy or soft and I find that most products without gluten are yummier to eat.
…Is it possible just not particularly like most proteins? I’m also a vegetarian solely for taste preferences. Meat just tastes gross and I don’t like the texture. I know I need protein obviously, and I do try to get it from other sources like nuts that I do like, but a lot of things containing protein just aren’t very good to me….I also dislike all beans.
As my partner almost certainly has celiac (has had multiple diagnostic tests), I’m on board with more people eating gluten free, because even at the current volume, the food is brutally expensive.
I was told I don’t have celiac but I should still avoid gluten. I feel a lot better. My diarrhea went away and I can focus. if gluten sensitivity doesn’t exist then why does going gf help me?
Interesting Ive been so critical of the GF movement up until now. I’ve struggled with major depression and anxiety since I was about 11 years old, but as an adult (31), I really really suffer with mood swings, adhd symptoms, brain fog, fatigue, as well as physical symptoms even when I don’t feel like I’m in a full blown depressive state. I wondered if I needed to be re-diagnosed but I don’t have access to therapy right now. Now I’m wondering maybe gluten is the culprit that makes my depression worse, not further comorbidities… thank you Doc!
I spent the day gathering up all the gluten so it can never not harm anyone ever again.
😀

I have colitis does this mean I have a higher chance of having celiac disease

Thank you for this simple and excellent video. The best I have found so far.
Question: If someone wants to become a beekeeper and they’re unsure of their family history, would that be a good enough reason to get an IgE test? (Specifically testing for various bee venom IgEs, that is.)
What if your physician is your typical British GP that doen’t give a f$&K of you are telling him and send you away with paracetamol?
What are your thoughts about AIP Autoimmune Protocol by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne? Many people with autoimmune disease are using this method with successful results. And because it’s a type of elimination diet (and reintroduce food slowly after) people are taking what so call food sensitivity tests.
You should bring an RD on to the channel to discuss low FODMAP and it’s effects on IBS. This is specific foods that can be irritants to IBS and helps find trigger foods and thresholds that can be consumed. Lactose is a FODMAP but so are polyols (sugar alcohols), fructoligosaccharides (fructans), galactoligiosaccharides, fructose, etc. It is very interesting and Monash University does a lot of research on it. Definitely look into it if you are unsure.
I have an intolerance for most preservatives found on/in foods… I explain it as I have a cup, each time I consume food that contains TBHQ my cups fills a little, once I’ve filled the cup then I experience symptoms (rashes, acne, my psoriasis flares up) but yeah, it doesn’t affect me much lol
Today, I bought a bottle of water(I know tap water is fine, but the water from the tap at hand was cloudy, so I was a little uncertain) only to notice a gluten free label on it when I was outside the supermarket. Glutenfree bloody WATER!
Also, gluten free shampoos and stuff like that, is just ridiculous
It’s weird how I can agree with everything this man says and still find his tone of voice unbelievably pateonizing. I dont WANT to agree with him, but I do because I have a pretty okay understanding of biology and the stats used in these studies. But if I came in here disagreeing with him? He would never convince me in a million years.
There has got to be a way of explaining these concepts without sounding like you think everyone is an idiot except for you…
I have had some interesting experiences with allergies, food intolerance, and…I don’t know what one of them actually counts as, I just know from repeated experimentation that if I eat a portabella mushroom, I WILL throw up. Doesn’t matter how long I cook it, I will throw up. I’ve done some experimentation on quantity, which doesn’t seem to be a huge factor, but after throwing up four different occasions I decided it was probably simplest not to take risks and avoid portabellas entirely. I’ve eaten tons of mushrooms that aren’t porabellas, and none of them have made me throw up although when I ate a whole bunch of white button mushrooms I did get kinda nauseous, but that may not have been related to the mushrooms at all, as eating them in more reasonable quantities has no effect on me.
On a less oddly specific note, when I was little I noticed drinking milk would make me a little sick (which did not stop my dad from making me drink it every day.) When my dad randomly decided whole milk was bad, he made me drink low fat milk instead, which made me more sick, and eventually my mom got him to let me switch back to whole milk, until he decided that milk wasn’t important after all and stopped forcing me to drink it. Meanwhile, eating reasonable servings of ice cream didn’t make me sick, so I was confused about why regular milk did, so I got my mom to buy some heavy whipping cream to make a dessert, and drank the left over cream and didn’t get sick. Then I tried to eat a lot of ice cream at once, and got sick. Since similar quantities got similar results before, I assumed the heavy whipping cream would also make me sick in large quantities, but both could easily be avoided by just not eating large amounts of either. (Incidentally, cheese and yogurt both seem fine at any quantity.) I didn’t really know how lactose intolerance worked until Jr High, but once I did I realized that was probably why milk made me sick, and starting taking Lactaid if I was going to eat much ice cream so I wouldn’t have to worry about making sure I didn’t eat too much. Later, I learned in a class on dairy ((Animal Science major)) that whipping cream actually has a lot less lactose per quantity than milk because of it’s higher fat percentage, and similarly low fat milk has a higher amount of lactose per quantity than whole milk because of it’s lower fat percentage, which completely matched what I’d already learned through trial and error.
On the topic of allergies. For years my doctor thought I had seasonal allergies, because my sinuses would hurt really bad, and nasal membranes would become inflamed. And throughout elementary school, I tried a lot of different medicines that did absolutely nothing, except cortisone nasal spray which fixed the inflammation, but not the pain. When my dad took up smoking while I was in Jr High (in the garage, not the house, but still exposure and all) my symptoms got much, much worse, and new ones so the doctor tried more medications. (Meanwhile, my mom put a ton of air purifiers around the house to do damage control as my dad assumes that any time someone is hurt or sick because of something he does they’re either lying, or wrong about what’s causing it, and thus doesn’t stop doing whatever it is because it ‘isn’t really his fault’ even if you ask him to.) Eventually, the doctor gave up and referred me to an allergist to get tested for seasonal allergies. The allergist tested probable allergens and all of them were negative, which he suspected would be the case, and based on my symptoms (pain in the sinus area, nasal membrane inflammation, increased light sensitivity while the face pain occurred, nausea, and olfactory hallucinations) and the fact that they would usually occur or worsen in response to certain strong smells, diagnosed me with chronic migraine, and prescribed a preventative medicine for migraines, and my symptoms all improved a lot. I also got sent to a neurologist to get an MRI of my brain, since olfactory hallucinations can also be a sign of brain tumors, but that turned out to just be a migraine thing in my case.
Celiac disease is very real. And no one’s denying that, but it is pretty rare. Gluten is not going to hurt you if you don’t have celiac disease. If you haven’t realized it yet, gluten free products in the gluten free section of the grocery store is extremely overpriced. Companies are using this fad to get your money. It’s ridiculous how quickly health fads blow up. There is a healthy way to eat gluten free but most people don’t focus on fruits and vegetables, they just consume processed foods that don’t contain gluten. If you want to eat healthier, focus on good carbohydrates (don’t even get me started on no carb diet fads), lots of vegetables, and a good amount of fruits and proteins. Carbs are essential to your body in order to function and produce energy, and if you completely cut them out because you want to eat gluten free, you will come in contact with a host of other health issues. So in all seriousness, please just eat the gluten. You aren’t getting healthier by removing it from your diet.
If you feel better avoiding gluten, then don’t eat it. It costs nothing to replace pasta with potatoes, and everything else has easy and cheap alternatives.
Forget the doctor, just test yourself. Go completely gluten free (strict) for 30 days, then pig out on pasta and bread for couple of days. If you are one of the few who will feel uncomfortable, at least you know what causes it.
You don’t have to become a “gluten bore” like this guy.
First off I want to say I love this video! I was diagnosed with Celiac seven years ago. My father told me I could not have it because I was too fat (I wasn’t even fat, I was a normal 7th grader.) He said everyone with Celiac was super skinny from malnutrition so that couldn’t be me. He tried convincing me that I didn’t need to be on a gluten free diet (him and my step mom didn’t want to pay for the extra cost of gluten free foods.) However, every time I ate gluten I would get a rash on my legs and I would throw up. Needless to say I still stayed on the diet and only ate lettuce or eggs when I was at his house. When my stepmom made dinner she would sometimes put gluten in my food because she was too lazy to make me something else, but would tell me it was gluten free and I would still end up getting sick later that night. I ended up cooking a lot of the family meals to avoid this.
This gluten free fad is both a good thing and a bad thing. It is good because there are so many options of gluten free products now that people with Celiac can eat. It is bad because it is people don’t take the disease seriously. If I go out to eat restaurants will claim they have gluten free foods, but are actually contaminating them with foods with gluten. This is fine for someone who is doing the diet for the heck of it, but not for us with Celiac. There have also been many times where people have given me crap for being one of those “gluten free dieters.” Once I explain that I am in fact going to get sick if I eat gluten, they lighten up, but it is still really annoying to always have to explain myself to everyone. I agree that you should not be on a gluten free diet unless you need it because you are ruing it for the rest of us.
Sofia that was amazing! Good points raised for gluten intolerance as well as those diagnosed with Celiac.
Great novelty cakes sometimes we all like to enjoy birthdays and special celebrations. Keep up the good work. You have many admirers and you will attract many costumers for your novelty cakes. A good hobby to have.
Thankyou
I had an allergist put different foods on bandages and left them on my skin for a day or two. Supersize supersize the boy with sensitive skin broke out to all of them. I left that office being told I was allergic to basically everything. they told me to try a diet to “feel even better” I’m sorry but I still tell every doctor I’m only allergic to paper tape.
Of course, the study that set off this fad trend involved only 34 patients, which makes it very hard to know whether those results would be applicable to the larger, general public. In addition, he makes a point in this video that the challenge study that was performed showed no evidence of specific or dose dependent effects of gluten. Despite this, that are still large groups of people who believe that they are “gluten intolerant”, and spending a ridiculous amount of money on a fad diet that makes them believe that they feel better. This behavior continues to even influence others around them to support the “gluten is evil” trend that is currently taking place. The research has shown that this is not the case, and most of those with a self-diagnosed celiac sensitivity do not meet criteria, and the rest have symptoms that are poorly controlled, even on a gluten-free diet. The most interesting portion of this video is the fact that those individuals who believe that their gluten-free diet is leading them to consume healthier products may actually being doing quite the opposite; the studies he reviewed showed that gluten-free products are often higher in carbohydrates and fats, and lower in protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Remember: if you believe that you have celiac disease or a wheat allergy, this should be diagnosed by your DOCTOR, who has been trained to make that decision.
I have coeliac disease. (can’t eat any traces of gluten)
When I go out to eat and ask if they have anything gluten free, they usually say no but we do have these vegan options…
Me ️️
Dr. Mike, I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on people saying they are allergic or react to MSG.
Great video. I’m a coeliac and hate the gluten free diet. I don’t think just cause it says gluten free it is healthy. Most of the good gluten free food is full of junk normal people wouldn’t eat if they actually read labels. The day I can stop eating gluten free will be the best day of my life.
3:08 Gluten sensitivity is a very real thing for me, haven’t eaten it in about seven years. Tried a couple slices of sour dough bread which is supposed to be good for people with gluten sensitivity, had a reaction (bloating) but went away in a few hours. I know from the past, before going off gluten, bloating was a regular occurrence, its a rarity now. I’d advise anyone with bloating (or worse) to try getting off gluten.
As someone who was unaware of what celiac disease was prior the up rise of a gluten free society fad, I am internally troubled by what has spiraled out of this movement. As for people who live with celiac disease, that cannot be enjoyable, although I am happy for you that now supermarkets are bursting at the seams with food for you to eat. Unfortunately this has a flip side, and that side is the complete neglect people in the general public have for facts or the medical research. Considering the initial study that started the idea of ‘gluten intolerance’ only contained 34 people and was scraping the barrel for conclusive results that alone should be a warning that the results are not definitive. Not only was the initial study rather inconclusive, the head researcher set up a more in-depth, more scientific study to reexamine his results, although at this time, he reported no significant results. (Wait, actually nothing? Yep, nothing.) I get it, people want to be their own doctor and diagnose themselves and all of their friends with varying degrees of gluten intolerance. Although there is a minor problem, most members of the general public are not physicians. If you think there is something wrong with your GI tract, you should visit a doctor. There really is a reason some humans go to school for 12 years after high school. Furthermore, when the issue of the placebo effect is mentioned, everyone turns into anecdotal Annie who happens to have her PhD in psychology. Just because you think not eating gluten alleviated all of your stomach upset, does not mean that is scientific, and frankly, it doesn’t really mean that any pain was alleviated at all. It really is mind blowing how many people will conform to the masses and then openly refute not only trained professionals such as physicians, but also the science those professionals use to explain their reasoning. That is truly what worries me, not the consistency of someone’s stool while not eating gluten, but rather the metaphorical stool that comes forth from their mouths.
I tried the gluten free thing for a while to deal with some chronic heartburn I was having. Didn’t really have any consistent improvements.
I’ve since switched to a lactose free diet and it seems to be going pretty well. Thankfully lactose is much easier to avoid than Gluten.
I completely agree with this video. My best friend has celiacs disease. She is on a fully gluten-free diet, as she should be. However, I have three other close friends who do not have celiacs and claim to be “gluten intolerant.” While I let them run with the idea, I do not think that the self-diagnosed gluten intolerance is reasonable, but rather a way of fitting in with the current trend. My friends even eat gluten in social settings quite often for someone with an intolerance. A few weeks after three of my friends diagnosed themselves, more of my friends did the same. I agree that if you have celiacs disease or are allergic to wheat, by all means please do not eat gluten. On the other hand, I think “gluten intolerant” people need to either be diagnosed or admit they are just trying to fit in with the fad diet.
Hello, Doctor!
I went here wondering around youtube and I stayed for every video! I honestly hope you would do anything related to ADHD, cuz it’s topic in which people have very little knowledge. Also, subbed and waiting for new vids!
Cheers from Poland!
Obviously this girl is a genius public speaker. I have seen adult talks be less interesting. What a great mind and talent! I just want to add, that when I was 17 I was diagnosed with IBS, and tests ruled against celiac. As such doctors gave me no advice for diet, other than increase fiber and or try a bland diet. I find that I have a very small tolerance to even all grains (white rice and buckwheat are the only semi tolerable grains for me), and unfortunately many gluten free flour breads also cause symptoms. I can eat some sourdough gluten free bread from a higher end bakery and I am fine with that…so I basically am on a Keto diet, meats, some fruits and lots of veggies. It just sucks how bad my symptoms were for decades, until I finally bit the bullet and became very strict with my dietary habitsto see if it would help long term. I also follow or try to follow the GAPS diet, or the SIBO diet, or the FODMAPS diet. ( I also don’t eat sugars, dairy, soy, and a very long list of things). Aside from many distressing symptoms that were a constant over the years, my gut hurt a lot and I always looked about 6 months pregnant because of balloating. I remember being mortified when I was 19, because a guy I had a crush on asked me if I was pregnant, and when I said I wasn’t, he basically called me a liar:( Nowdays, for the first time in my life, I some days have no balloating, and some days just a bit of it…and the daily pain has drastically reduced…so having a super strict diet can be life changing, and liberating…Just try it for 3 weeks, if you notice a vast improvement, follow the restricted diet indefinitely…and heal the gut!
Thank you so much for describing it in a way everyone can understand. I’m sending this to explain it to peopleI because me explaining the differences and sending them links is not working. I have eight allergies if you only include food based ones. Gluten, dairy, soy, ect. I’m so glad he’s actually explaining it. I’m so tired of people who still drink milk telling me that they’re full on allergic. Like no. If I drink milk or eat or use anything with dairy in it I puke and can’t leave the bathroom or walk. They are not the same things.
Try eating a few slices of sourdough bread. It has 3 ingredients, unlike processed breads with 20+, this difference is more likely to cause health issues than gluten.
All I know is that when I eat food that contains gluten, even on accident and without knowing I have until later, I feel like crap for about eight hours afterward, sick to my stomach, and unable to think clearly. It’s been this way for about 6 years, and I’d just rather not change my diet back to contain gluten. Besides, I mostly cook vegetables, rice, beans, and lean meats, and generally eat a lot healthier than I did before I went gluten-free. I don’t really care if it’s scientifically supported, or if it’s just a fad. I don’t eat gluten-free substitute food, as most of it is terrible. I just feel a lot better when I don’t eat gluten.
My goodness, I’m having all these symptoms mainly joints inflammation, headaches and depression. Even though I love bread and baking I have no choice but to try a gluten free diet. How long does it take to have the joint inflammation symptoms gone after starting this diet?
Stacy, please, please, please!!!!! Make more videos what you eat in a day, your GF grocery hauls cause I am so confused right now, I need to go gluten-free according to my doctor. Don’t know where to start.
Is there any new data out there for you to review. I really enjoy your perspective, and this video seemed to get a lot of traction, Please make another!
wow you are amazing you inspired me a lot I have been gluten free for 8 years now and I agree with everything she said
How the heck does she remember all of this?! I want to know. Amazing memory and very well spoken.
You look great thank you so much so inspiring God bless you!!!!!!
My mother has always had issues with her stomach, its been confirmed to not be irritable bowel nor celiac or any allergy. It seems to be stress related and she is to be frank a drama-queen. She decided to go gluten-free a few months ago and has claimed feeling better, I’m thinking this is probably placebo as my mother still manages to eat non-loaf breads, gluten-rich brown bread, and brown rice and somehow believe she is on a gluten-free diet.
It is so refreshing to hear a psychiatrist who is not only knowledgeable about psychiatric disorders and medications to treat them, but also knows about nutrition and how food sensitivities can mimic mental disorders. I am trying to get back on the ketogenic diet, which eliminates all grains and other sources of carbs. When I am in ketosis my depression almost completely disappears. I have been officially diagnosed with bipolar 2, but during a 10 day stay in the psych unit several years ago the psychiatrist on duty said he thinks I have BPD. I have done a lot of research on BPD, and as rude as that psychiatrist was to me, I think he is right. I don’t know if a report got sent to my psychiatrist or not. Anyway, my depression and anxiety symptoms are much more manageable when I’m in ketosis. I just find it really hard to stay on keto, even though I initially lost 30 of the 103 lbs I gained since I started taking Seroquel. I think the only way for me to stop craving sugar and carbs is to go 100% carnivore.
Which is the study being referred to at 7:04? I can’t find it in the references.
I have this it’s really hard if someone wants cake they can have it but we can only have certain cake and certain foods It’s hard really hard sometimes I just wanted to eat food that I cant eat! anyway bye!
I never knew what gluten-free was until I took a nutrition class my sophomore year of college. I learned how in people with celiac disease, the gluten destroys the hairlike fibers in your intestine causing absorption of nutrients to lessen or stop all together. I know many people with celiac disease who are gluten-free, I have a sorority sister who has a severe sensitivity to gluten and I’ve heard of gluten allergies. There’s not a doubt in my mind that gluten-free options need to be available. But my absolute, hands-down biggest pet peeve is when people who don’t have these dietary issues say they are gluten-free and when I ask them why, it never fails that I get the response of “gluten is bad for you”. No, its not. It’s only unhealthy for people who have celiac, gluten sensitivities or an allergy. In the nutrition class I mentioned earlier, we watched a documentary about a man who went out into New York and found people who were on this fad diet and asked them all the same question, “What is gluten?” Not a single person knew what gluten was, yet they were on this diet. It just shows how uneducated people are on health these days. Quite honestly, I find people who go on this diet because they “heard gluten is bad for you” are idiots. This brings me to the saying your mom would mention when your reasoning was because so and so did it. “If so-and-so jumped off a bridge, would you?” I feel so strongly about this because this shows people could potentially make bad decisions for their health just because of word of mouth and not because of factual evidence. I actually didn’t talk to a roommate of mine for a week after talking about going on a gluten-free diet because I was disgusted by the fact that a health major who was in a nutrition class fell into the trap of a fad diet.
thank u so much for this after 10 or so years of denial i’m pretty damn sure i’m gluten intolerant. my stomach looks 7 month pregnant. it so depressing as i work out every day and am in great shape my arms and legs are super toned but still i have to hide under baggy t shirts and never wear crops because i look obese on my stomach i know i have abs too because there are days when i haven’t had gluten and i wake up with washboard abs i’m going to do exactly what u said 2 weeks without touching the damn gluten
I still don’t understand. Am I allergic or what? I discovered each time I have soy I get filled up like lead is in my stomach,I get flushed and vomit violently. Is that intolerance? I can not eat again for the rest of the day even if soy issue was in morning. I figured it was soy today. I’m vegan had an impossible whopper few weeks ago, same symptoms as above, had another one a week ago, same reaction. Today i had vegan cream cheese on a cucumber with fake bacon crumble,2 hrs later flushed, migraine, fatigue and vomiting. I put 2 &2 together.. The “vegan” whoppers -soy. The fake bacon crumble-soy.
I have Celiacs, my case was kinda close to hers. I got huge rashes on my neck and chest. I was 10, and fit into clothes for 6 and 7 year olds. I’ve had it for over 5 years now. Tha is for educating me more, and a lot of other people.
Obviously this guy is not gluten intolerant, if he was then he, like many of us who suffer, would know the effects on our digestive system. I know what gluten does to me, and the health benefits of avoiding it. I note he doesn’t talk about the differing types of gluten, the prevalence of high gluten in commercially grown wheat and the low gluten strains such as spelt. Could it be that the exceptionally high volume of gluten in modern diets is a contributing factor? Our hunter / gatherer digestive systems has not fully adapted to modern gluten rich diet perhaps? Calling it a fad when there’s obviously way more research to be done is a naive viewpoint, more science than opinion please.
You are so right! I was diagnosed about 5 years ago. I did have the colonoscopy, endoscopy, Damn brutal!!! Get knocked out before the endoscopy!!! I have hypothyroid, chronic back pain, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis,IBS, copd, migraine headaches, You name it, I seem to have been diagnosed with it.
Have been on gluten free diet for about 5 years. Think I am dying from malnutrition.
Assholes that think gluten free products are good for them need to have their heads read!!
I have to agree with many points in this video, and also disagree with one. There are many members of my family that were diagnosed with IBS for years. It was not until one of them had a colonoscopy, and was diagnosed with Celiac Disease that the rest of them also found out that they too had Celiac Disease. I believe it is something that is commonly misdiagnosed, a lot of the reason beinga majority of people do not want a diagnostic test done. While certain inflammatory markers from lab draws may suggest Celiac Disease, Gastro’s typically will only give a solid diagnosis by biopsy.
With this being said, I can understand the frustrating point about people “jumping on the bandwagon” and entering this “gluten-free” fad. But who are you to say that this doesn’t work for a lot of these individuals? While some of them may be doing it for ridiculous reasons, a lot of people actually FEEL BETTER limiting foods that contain gluten. Whether that is due to gluten intolerance, or an un-diagnosed gluten allergy or Celiac Diseasewho knows. Do I believe the food industry is taking advantage of this? Absolutely. But I also believe that the majority of consumers that participate in this diet are getting some sort of positive outcome from this. There absolutely needs to be more research done on this issue. The general public could also use a lesson on gluten, and common bowel disorders.
I think personally it all comes down to trial and error. I am vegan and had gastrointestinal problems. Everyone told me it was because of gluten. Everyone in the vegan community told me that gluten was evil. So I cut out everything made of wheat. My problem persisted. Turns out I was intolerant to soy. After I lowered my soy intake, my problems went away. Recently I realized if I had spicy foods, I would get hives and cough a lot. I stopped eating spicy foods and havent had any problems.
let me share my story some may relate to. im 40, ive been eatting regular american foods since childhood. in my teens i started getting canker sores and headaches. these followed me all the way through my 20s and upper 30s. fast foward to 30s. sore joints, hadaches(bad ones), brain fog, tired, depressed, wanted to be alone, not interested in doing stuff.( not all the time, but most) Then, randomly, usually at night, i would get excrutiating pains under my right rib. a quick ZAP pain. only lasted a second, but it would make me jump, or even fall to the floor. scary! scary enough to cause an onset of anxiety waiting and anticipating the next strike of pain to hit… lost weeks of sleep. it only happened a few times a year. Then one night it happened 2 times back to back. I had a friend over and they were like” yo what the fuck? you ok?” after that, i had this constant never ending dull tooth ache pain under my right lower rib. i dealt with it for months. ( all the time i was eatting regualar food) i still got headaches, my joints felt horrible all the time. but i blamed that on weight lifting. anyway i finally went to the doctor. im stubborn as hell. endoscopy showed some inflammation in my doudendum and a small ulcer and esphogal varices. ( swelling of the vessels in the esphogus). ultrasound showed nothing on the liver, kidney, pancreas, gallblader etc. bloodwork came back ok except SKY HIGH antibodies for gluten.. So doctor said “oh, stop eatting gluten” honestly the way i felt i was hoping they woulda found something more than that, cause that sharp zap pain is terrifying. I went gluten free for a year. ( headaches 99% gone, canker sores gone, pain under my right rib gone, although i do still feel little blips in the area….. Now, recently with this whole covid 19 thing and being laid off I have been eatting like shit.. compleltey lost my way. eatting mcdonalds, dunkin sandwichs, pizza you name it… what do you know…. slowly but surely, migraine came back where i threw up, joints feel horrible, and the pain in my rib is acting up again and i did get a little zap which has set my anxiety and depression on fire…. Please stay away from gluten. its fucking poison
Yeah, if you and four friends go to a taphouse and order all your food “celiac/gluten allergy,” and the kitchen has to prepare your foor in an allergen-sterile environment, and you complain about how long it takes, don’t tip the waitress, AND THEN ORDER BEER…..You’re a fucking DICKHOLE.
The fad has helped me get my life back. Liver is doing good now and I’m growing some hair I lost back. I can still eat certain fast foods as long as I’m careful. I’m just waiting to see if the nerve damage will heal or not. Was diagnosed with suspected gluten sensitivity from my GI specialist. I’m not sure if I am celiac and the blood test was just not accurate (I heard it’s not). I haven’t gotten an endoscopy yet, but he strongly suspects gluten sensitivity.
I have IBS and PCOS lost 30 pounds in 2 months, and you know what I did? Nothing just eating less yunk and more healthy things, but honestly even with IBS and my problems with my intestines, I still eat wheat, glutens, and whatever I eat almost anything! I don’t eat a lot of it, because yeah like anything a lot of it is bad, moderate! I actually have not had changes, and I feel GREAT with my intestines, I have NEVER had constipation, yeah even with IBS, loosing weight is what made me feel better, even less nausea and heartburn, which is also because I take my medicine well and I do more exercise or stretch! I don’t substitute gluten at all and I am still okay:D Okay, look keep a variety and balance!!!:D
Twenty years ago my dad, who was a dentist, got allergic to acrylic plastics that you use in teeth fillings. A few years ago he died with no lung capacity left. It really scares me that nail salons use basically that same acrylic, but only lower quality and with poorer protective measures.
I gave up gluten just this year and feel amazing! It cleared my acne, made me feel better, and so much more:DD
Thank you so much for sharing your story and providing constructive information!
Stopped eating gluten for a day (!) today (being vegan already),and for the first time the “eternal bloating” has disappeared ever since.M-A-G-I-C!
Health and happiness to everyone!
I work at an Italian restaurant and I can not tell you the amount of times I have people come in and order something and ask it to be made with gluten free sauce and pasta. Well, being an Italian restaurant it is no surprise that we do not have a ton of gluten free options so when I tell them that what they are ordering has gluten in it and that we do not offer it as a gluten free option, many of them say “that’s okay, I just can’t have a ton of gluten”. Now, I don’t know these people personally so I don’t know their reasoning for asking for gluten free options when they aren’t totally gluten free but it kind of confuses me because I know it is not cheaper so what is it? This video provided a couple of reasons that might explain why I get tables with people like this but since I do not know these people I will never fully understand their reasoning. I have asked my coworkers about people like this and they say that some people “think” that gluten free products are healthier which is why some might order our gluten free food, however, this video suggests otherwise. “..gluten free products sometimes are higher in carbs and sodium, and lower in fiber and protein than some gluten-containing products”. Again, I do not know their reasons for wanting our gluten free options if they aren’t completely gluten free, but I don’t think our Italian food is very healthy either way.
I had a friend come to me who was angry about this gluten free diet thing, he can’t have gluten because it gets him sick and stuff, he stated that the food with gluten was more tasty and its frustrating not having an option. While others are just doing it out of a fad.
This is really useful. A few years ago I kept getting pains in my side and ichy rashes on my arm. I had so many tests and there was nothing wrong. I soon found that it occurred every time I eat wheat, so stopped eating gluten. I’m hoping that It will be a temporary intolerance..
Thanks for putting this together.
found out I had celiac disease 2 years ago. Can you please do a full video on it. It would help a lot
Well, some of us do need to be wheat-free…whether you all think this is a made up problem or not. If I eat anything with wheat, once, I will have 24 hours of discomfort and pain. If I continue for more than one day I begin to bleed rectally when I evacuate my bowels. If I continue beyond that, I will develop pain and sores from mouth to anus. Now that I am wheat-free I no longer wake up to ice-pick stabbing pains in my bowel every morning. I no longer go through periods of painful bloat. My explosive IBS is gone. I feel a hell of a lot better. So, you see, even though we may not test positive for celiac, some of us still suffer greatly. I did so for most of my 63 years. You doctors used to think fibromyalgia was psychosomatic bunk, too, but I see you’ve managed to develop a drug to treat it. It would be nice if you would listen to your patients rather than dismiss them.
Really great video. Dr Rukus really knew what he was talking about and everything was informative. But Jesus Christ was the very start cringy, with that smile
You are awesome! Your videos are very informative and important.
What about people who say they are allergic to food coloring? True of false?
Is it possible to develop a food allergy later in life? For example, I used to love pineapple, but recently I get nausea and vomiting with any kind of fresh pineapple, and then hives with cooked pineapple, canned pineapple, or pineapple flavored things? Is this typical of allergies?
I have celiac, and this talk was very good and informative. I lovedit.
I have ecosinophilic oesophagitis and I have to take sodium sesquihydrate tables one a day and a fluticasone puffer two times a day because I am allergic to something but got told testing for it would be pointless because it would be hard to track I am only 29 years old. It’s annoying but if I don’t have them I get heartburn x 10 pains
My first skin test, as a child, positive to every single prick. My doctor told my mom if you have a 100%reaction to it then you aren’t allergic but have something else going on like an infection or something. So 100% reaction equals negative for allergies.??? Move on to adulthood. I have asthma, severe seasonal allergies, and a laundry list of other symptoms. On more than one occasion I had severe reactions to something unknown. These included hives, severe asthma, acute diarrhea and coming close to passing out. None of my doctors suggested food allergies. One even told me that it was so rare in adults that it was a waste of money to test for it. Five years ago I went to a new doctor and she decided to do IGE and skin prick tests. Yup! Several food allergies. We did an elimination diet and then the challenge. Super scary! I have been prescribed an epi pen now. Just in case I accidentally eat something I shouldn’t. I find it interesting that my seasonal allergies are much less of a problem now that my food allergies are under control. I’m not sure why that is but I’m thankful.
7:00 I would like to say Dietitians practice using evidence based medicine ONLY! (I mean, at least in Canada they do) If a dietitian is recommending food sensitivity tests are you sure they really are a dietitian? I just wanted to point this out because the science around nutrition is always changing based on so many factors, and dietitians must make decisions based both on these new studies, and also based on evidence heavily grounded in science. Dietitians normally would not go around making false claims! I don’t want people confusing dietitians and certified, good nutritionists with other “nutritionists” or holistic practitioners. There is a difference. I’m disappointed to hear that any dietitian at all would have ever made such false claims.
Sophia did an awesome job, presenting the case for eating gluten free. Great stage presence, eye contact, and gestures. A confident presenter. Of course, grandfathers are not at all biased. But if you agree, let her know. Performing is a passion for her and your encouragement will help her for the future.
I’m also having trouble getting my 3 yr old to eat now because he’s had so many reactions he’s been afraid to eat. Yesterday I finally got him to eat 3 noodles. I had him kiss the noodle, lick it then bite it. Shortly after he was in the bathroom with stomach issues
I assume cross contamination
I had no idea about the soy sauce!! Im currently pregnant and was having really sore knees and a LOT of uncomfortable bloating and fatigue. I cut out gluten and felt great after about a week. I ate some sushi(cooked) with soy sauce and had a stomach ache right after.
I want to get tested for allergies and sensitivities, but I don’t want to go to the doctor (especially now with coronavirus) are there really no at home tests I can take that would work. I’ve never had an allergic reaction to foods, but I noticed as I have gotten older I’m not digesting properly and I want to know what foods are causing it. I tried monitoring what I eat to see, but I’m not that great at keeping track. Any help please?
Hi Doctor,
I believe I have gluten sensitivity because it does cause me gastrointestinal issues like bloating and constipation. I have been diagnosed with anxiety, depression and adhd.
I am on my 6th week of fluoxetine and I am feeling full of energy. I want to do things -so far just cleaning, ironing, laundry… I have so much to catch up with.
My question is: The depression you are addressing in this video, is it a mild depression? Because I don’t think that gluten sensitivity can cause suicidal thoughts. Is that right?
I absolutely loooooove all your videos and them. I am so thankful for them.
How do certain scents cause almost instant headaches or migraines for some people? I’m quite sensitive to most perfumes/colognes people wear, along with scented candles/air fresheners, some incense, and even some foods. I do have asthma and am diagnosed with chronic migraine.
I always feel queasy around the scents. Even just the slightest whiff can knock me down.
Dr. Mike, what is your opinion? My daughter is a year old. She ate peanut butter for the first time yesterday. Within 10 minutes she had welts on her face, her eyes were puffy and red, and her face was puffy and swollen. She had no breathing issues. I gave her 2 MLS of benadryl. She took a nap and then projectile vomited on me. Her face was not getting better, so I took her to the er, since urgent care refused to see her and her pediatrician office was closed. They gave her prednisone and then put on her paper work: NEVER EAT PEANUTS OR PEANUT BUTTER Again. Just like that in all caps. I have an appointment with her doctor on Monday for allergy testing. I’m a new mom, and I am just concerned about her. Will this be something she outgrows or will she have to carry an epipen for the rest of her life? My mom was allergic to peanuts when she was little, but as an adult is not allergic to them.
I hate allergies. I just wanna cuddle my cats all the time but then my nose is like, “hELLoooOOOOO, did you mISs meeEEEeeEeEE?!”
Thanks for the video! I have removed gluten out of my diet completely and I feel amazing, no more battling inflammation and depression.
Right right right, but don’t downplay the craze! The market has been flooded with gluten free options as a result of these fad diets and now those who DO NEED dietary accommodations will find it easier than ever to buy grain products that don’t have gluten. The problems caused to consumers who choose to be gluten free despite that not being medically necessary are outweighed by the quality of life improvements to the afflicted minority (imo). Furthermore, if a gluten free diet just has placebo benefits, should we really discount that?
Sorry but everything is data. If people are avoiding gluten-containing products and saying it makes them feel better, that’s data. I suspect it’s not so much the gluten but how wheat is grown and how flour is produced. The result barely resembles food. More study is required on this.
My older cousin is allergic to something in cows that is found in all things that com from cows, so no he can’t have anyone that comes from cows or… he has horrible bloody diarrhea
Been having problems with this most of my life dealing with Celiac’s. People assume it’s like lactose intolerance, or a mild allergy, not that big of a deal… meanwhile I’m over here having the next 2-3 weeks of my life f*cked up because someone handled bread and then made my food. At least mine doesn’t come with anaphylaxis.

Amazing I just found your channel and I love it! Thumbs up and subscribing!! Please don’t stop making the videos!
The diseases produced from gluten are serious, so it really grinds my gears when someone jumps on the bandwagon of a gluten free diet without knowing the reason people do it. The hype of this diet just goes to show how naïve we are. When one person does something, we all have to do it. I understand that it’s under diagnosed and so it makes people want to be sure that they are not affected from gluten, but I bet at least a third of the people on a gluten free diet don’t know what gluten is or why there’re on the diet.
https://nypost.com/2020/05/21/scientists-believe-cannabis-could-help-prevent-treat-coronavirus/
Is this true?
So if it just shows what you eat why did it show cottage cheese? And why does it showing that prove its wrong? Also for a DR to say something is wrong due to a tiny piece of personal unsubstantial evidence is kind of silly. I don’t believe in or not in food sensitivity testing, just saying I noticed that oddity
I’m literally intolerant to anything high fodmap so I have to live on an extremely restricted low fodmap diet & it’s so boring
IgA and IgG tests for food sensitivities are not a metric of what foods you can and can’t eat in the same way that IgE tests are. I don’t think anyone that has read the research is really saying that. These tests are a metric of an up/regulation the immune system due to gut permeability. So what do you do? Permanently eliminate processed foods, and temporarily avoid the foods that are causing that up regulation. After 3-4 months, you test again to see if you can start to reintroduce foods. Is this any different from an elimination diet? No, not really. But to say that IgG and IgA tests are useless is quite dismissive of a potential method for reducing systemic inflammation, which is proving more often than not to be the root cause of chronic illnesses. I completely agree that hormonal and nutritional deficiencies should be checked for, but those tests are not mutually exclusive with IgG and IgA tests.
Allergy to bee stings runs in my family. I’ve been stung by wasps/hornets in the past with only normal sting reactions. Is it possible I could still be allergic to bee stings? Is there a way to test?
Agreed all those are LDTs( Laboratory Developmental Tests) but rich people are so stupid they will buy anything on line.
Your production team has done sometthng different, every time you move back from a straight upright or forward leaning position you go out of focus. Please fix this, it makes you very hard to watch.
I have allergies to pollen, plants, cats, etc. Plus some food allergies.
I also suffer severe migraines that are triggered by food and drink. These triggers I have referred to as food sensitivities. Is that wrong?
Dining out I just tell the waitstaff they are all allergies to make it easier. Most places I go the staff are very helpful. Though someone told me to put out my epipen to show others that I have real allergies and am not just food sensitivities.
he purportedly sets out to clear up the facts on gluten and try and distinguish the craze surrounding gluten free from the scientific evidence which set it off in many ways a good cause: there are probably people who are needlessly limiting their diets when they might be better off trying other approaches to resolving their health problems. However, his wording, whilst factually correct, reeks of cynisism towards anecdotal evidence, and rigid adherence to the medical system which, although fantastic in many ways, is not as accurate nor as knowledgeable as we like to believe. The complex workings of the gut in particular is an extremely cutting edge science, and is unfortunately far from accurate. Rejection of anecdotal evidence blinds doctors and patients to vast stores of knowledge and experience. Although the wheat hasn’t been sifted from the chaff when it comes to verifying claims, and suspicion regarding reliability is therefore justified, testimonies from people trying gluten free simply cannot be unanimously rejected as suspicious or caused by placebo purely on the basis that they haven’t been ‘officially’ verified by doctors. To deny a person’s experience purely on the basis that it hasn’t (yet) been explained by doctors is blind, patronising, and unfortunately potentially quite harmful. So I take issue with this guy’s attempt to brush over anecdotal evidence, and persuade viewers that they ‘shouldn’t be on that gluten free diet’. The facts are important, and obviously the title is click bait as well. But choosing to accept only the facts with the official stamp of approval from the medical community is blinkered and harmful. It should be remembered that it is often anecdotal evidence that prompts research and discoveries in the first place. If millions of people claim to feel better on a gluten free diet, the task is not to criticise and scoff, but to ask why.
I noticed you guys didn’t even mention immunotherapy. Is that because it doesn’t work? About a year ago I went to get an allergy tests done because I was having digestive issues, itchy and got hives but didn’t know why. Anyways I did a skin prick test that tested 70 things from animals to food to pollen. 69 came back with some type of allergy. They told me the size of the red spot indicated how allergic I was to each thing. I got an epi pen and they told me I would benefit from immunotherapy. I decided to do it even with my fear of needles because my dad has bad allergies like I do and he said his worked for about a decade and then his allergies came back. I’ve been doing the shots for almost a year now and have not seen or felt any difference. I’m still allergic to my cats, I still get hives and blotchy skin and I wake up literally every morning with puffy eyes sinus headaches and sneezes. It’s become an everyday thing and I’m so tired of feeling sick everyday.
How about allergic rhinitis?? Dust?? Nasal Spray?? Any explanation?? Or recomendation?
I really liked this video, as I have a close family member with Celiac Disease. It’s hard to find things that we can eat together because she has a very specific diet that she has to follow. However, I wish that people would stop following this fad because they think it is healthier for them. Our bodies are able to process gluten naturally, unless you have an intolerance. Gluten-Free diets don’t really help you at all. A lot of people think gluten is really bad for them, when it really isn’t.
So if I develop those symptoms (gluten and dairy pain) after trauma from an antibiotic, what’s the healing protocol? All I know is that a healthy 37 year old guy shouldn’t have these happen out of nowhere.
>>>>***HEY!! DR.Mike***<<<< I’ve had allergies literally my whole life (indoor, outdoor, animals, shellfish, “year around”).
I have bad sinus issues (nasal drip and congestion which causes me to subconsciously sniffle that people notice and I don’t), and I went to my doctor, she said I have abnormal nostrils (swollen/purple), and I mentioned to her that nothing helps relieve this discomfort. She says try nasal sprays, but they’re uncomfortable and most have not worked.
I don’t know what to do anymore!:( Need help!!!
(Looooove your channel btw)
I sympathize with those with a true diagnosis of Celiac’s disease. Working in a restaurant has made the gluten fad extremely annoying. People are constantly ordering gluten free items but then still eating the bread or order dessert so I know they are not true Celiac sufferers. We are extremely careful in the preparation of gluten free entrees and sides. Everything is cooked in a separate area with different utensils to avoid cross-contamination. If you don’t truly have a problem with gluten then this is a very time consuming process. This fad I think has made it easier for actual sufferers because now they have more selection of food items in restaurants and grocery stores. This i think makes their life feel more normal. I have intestinal issues and was put on a gluten free diet; it was extremely expensive and I felt little difference. I do believe more people are having issues with wheat because we consume so much of it. American wheat has been altered so much and our bodies aren’t meant to digest that much. I’d rather pay for organic and still get to enjoy my non-quinoa pasta.
Do you not have lactose free milk and other dairy products that you can buy in the grocery in your country? I don’t mean almond milk or any other alternative, I mean cows milk where they have removed as much of the lactose as possible? We have that in Sweden and it’s great if you are lactose intolerant and not allergic. I’m curious about any country.:)
Amen! It’s wonderful to see someone providing a voice of reason these days.
Thanks for watching! You can find me on IG @stacyrody:) Be sure to leave me a comment on my most recent post, say “hello!” and let me know that you found me from this video.:)
I have celiac disease and I loved this I made me feel so much better about myself because I fell like I’m the only one
Wow I see myself in so many ways in this conversation. I have multiple allergies (avocado, latex, nickle, pollen, dust mites) but also several sensitivities to food due to IBS (coffee, alcohol, salami,…plenty more…). I find that people don’t really understand the differences between the two. So I basically tell them, don’t buy avocado, the rest I can avoid myself. I also have a lot of anxiety around the avocado, while my reaction to it is not that severe (my throat will swell, but not close up completely, so I cannot swallow, but I can breathe). AND I am doing immunotherapy for the pollen and dust mite allergies. I know immunotherapy does not work for everyone, but I have noticed a great difference in my reaction to pollen and dust. I don’t need as much medication anymore and I have no respiratory complaints anymore. For severe allergies it can be a good treatment to make the reaction not as severe as it was…Well that’s my allergy story!
Is it possible to have serious respiratory issues for the first 2 years of your life (I was on an old-school inhaler and had a personal caretaker at home), be diagnosed officially as having gotten over it, but then to have asthma-like reactions whenever you have hay-fever or whenever you’re around smoke / humid air for the rest of your life. I’m now 33 yrs old and hay-fever hits me hard every year, no matter where I’m living at the time.
This is not the first time someone’s said that milk thing is a myth though it always seems like my cold/hayfever intensifies after having cow’s milk. I am perfectly having having coconut milk & yoghurt but I still want ice-cream hehe Yet after having a bowl of ice cream a few weeks back, I found within a few hours my chest was tighter and I was wheezing a little. It goes away after a few days, no danger just discomfort. Yesterday I had some tiramisu; within a few hours I could feel that tightness in my chest again and wheezing. I found coughing would take away the wheezing. I woke up in the early hours of the next day with a very tight chest, struggling to breath so I got up and took acc200 and sat up for some time. It calmed down and I went back to sleep. I can have cheese, with no apparent issues. Just how severe can a lactose intolerance get and does a prior/pre-existing respiratory issue increase the chances of such things happening? I hope this is not in my head, but at the same time I do because then maybe I can get over this.
When I was 14 I started getting rashes on my back and we narrowed it down and decided that it came up every time I ate tomatoes so I had a blood test to see if I was allergic to them but nothing came up. Do you know why this could be?
Old video so I doubt this will get seen. People with increased gut permeability (which is often manifested as IBS, but can be manifested as other ailments (arthritis, anxiety)) MAY benefit from a gluten free diet.
Also, the way we diagnose celiac disease only tests for a full blown longstanding immune response resulting in an essentially atrophic small intestine. However, we are now finding that a person can be “pre-celiac” (symptoms vary from none to IBS to mental health) and can respond very well to a gluten free diet.
For the trendiness of a gluten free dietit’s not going to dramatically change the lives of the majority. Gluten is a small (large for some) part of a diet that can cause inflammation in the body. So if you’re replacing processed glutinous crappy bread/carb heavy foods with processed gluten free clones of these foods, you’re probably not going to notice anything other than the placebo effect.
I’ve taken many different allergy tests. I liked that you described the IgG one. The first allergy/sensitivity test I took basically told me I was allergic to everything I was eating and nothing I wasn’t eating. So the IgG explanation made sense why that happened. When I worked with my doctor and got a very more in depth and accurate allergy test done it was much more enlightening and honestly, depressing. I have chronic illnesses that cause a lot of inflammation and basically most foods trigger more inflammation and flare ups. Sticking to an elimination diet has made a HUGE difference in my health and I hope that one day I’ll be able to introduce other foods back in.
Healthcare Triage, please look up the hormone zonulin and its relationship to celiac disease (CD) and non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS).
Look up the drug larazotide acetate. It’s expected to go into clinical trial level 3 in the year 2018, expected to complete level 3 in 3 years, and expected to go into level 4 after that. Level 4 is when pharmaceutical companies will turn the drug over to doctors to be able to prescribe to all patients with CD and NCGS, and drug companies will be able to start making money by selling the drug. When that happens, expect pharmaceutical companies to bombard us with ads to get checked for CD and NCGS and to have a test for NCGS. The NCGS test will probably be one that measures the zonulin level in our blood.
People who eat gluten-free include people:
(1) with CD
(2) with NCGS
(3) who can’t digest FODMAPs easily
(4) with wheat allergies.
Would you believe that the add I got for this video was one for food allergy test!
Thank u I ate a box of pizza with my daughter and I’m in the restroom I feel like crap major fatigue I can’t stand it
I used to have a pollen allergy and an allergy to penicillin. I no longer have any symptoms from pollen, but I don’t know if the penicillin allergy also went away. My mother told me my face blew up and turned red after getting penicillin when I was younger so I can’t really try it
It’s good to see you someone doing something on allergies and intolerance. I wish more people would know about this I often have to explain to people about my issue because they think it’s not a big deal.
I’m alcohol intolerant and I can’t tell you how many times people just say I don’t like to drink. when I was dating my husband we went to a lot of bars and people would try to buy me drinks and I would turn them down because it would make me sick and people would never believe me, call me a party pooper and a joy kill. That I should try drinking it slowly and see what happens. And believe me I tried almost everything before I found out I was intolerant of alcohol. Put this in perspective, after drinking one 12% alcohol beer I would get nauseous, flushed in the face, my asthma will start acting up, and I get dizzy if I get up to fast. If I try to continue I always throw up. And obviously it’s just gets worse if I try stronger alcohol. I don’t go to bars anymore, and if we go to a party with friends I always make sure to bring a non-alcoholic beverage just in case all the beverages are alcoholic. That way I’m not stuck drinking water all night if they even have it.
Is it possible to have an allergy or intolerance to preservatives in foods or on skin care products? Also, what would cause someone to go from having a super high caffeine tolerance to being unable to even tolerate the smallest amount (like severe severe migraines and throwing up for a few days after having maybe a sip of a soda or regular coffee)?
I started eating healthier a year ago and have a hard time with it because I keep running into foods I’m allergic too. I get hives and my throat and tongue itch and sometimes swell a bit from things like soy and spinach. Kale gave me the worst reaction. It makes it scary to try anything new.
Ah… life without allergies, I cannot imagine. Even IgE isn’t 100% accurate which makes food allergies so hard to deal with unless you actually come into direct contact with the substance and get an allergic reaction, I have higher IgE towards sunflower seeds than I have towards shrimps, yet I can eat sunflower seeds fine but get tons of blisters around my whole mouth if I chew on a shrimp (which I had to do an actual “provokation”-testing at the hospital for, no clue what this would be called in English other than provocation testing, as in actually eating while being supervised at a hospital).
Ate gluten free pizza once by mistake. I was not prepared for the cardboard in my mouth and thought I was eating display piece. Holy crap was it terrible.
I have hypothyroidism.. I grew up heavy and lost weight as an adult.. I’ve never felt good.. 8 months ago I started treatment for hypothyroidism, and it was like omg, I can feel this good? I thought it was the answer, but I was still bloated all the time, my skin still had issues, brain fog, anxiety, depression. I have ptsd from childhood as well, I just assumed these symptoms had to do with that and not caring for myself as well as I should.. I started making dishes that were gluten free because I followed a blogger who cooks that way and noticed myself feeling better… so I went completely gluten free. My skin is better than it’s ever been, I’m starting to come out of depression and brain fog… it’s incredible. Honestly, if you have gluten sensitivity, you probably don’t even need to reintroduce gluten to “find out”, I know what would happen if I ate gluten again, so I won’t. You’ll be able to tell if you have it when you remove it from your diet.
I have had celiac disease sense I was 2. Except I had to be put in e hospital for a month, lost all my hair and couldn’t walk. And I still throw up everytime I eat it. But now I’m a verrrry tall person who is very healthy. Yay for you!
There was a TEDex talk in Sofia? I wonder how I missed hearing about it…
Thank you for this video and increasing understanding of this issue. Thank you for pointing out that the IgE test can have false positives. Many people jump to the conclusion that a positive test result is a true positive. (I have one allergy confirmed via IgE and food diary/oral tolerance test and one false positive from the same IgE test ruled out by the food diary/oral tolerance.) As my allergy developed around 30 yrs and are not anaphylactic, I often struggle with people understanding the seriousness. The response is often “oh so it won’t kill you”.
So as a doctor flying on an airplane, do you carry an epipen? Do you carry a “doctor kit?”
Hey Dr Mike I don’t appreciate the clickbait splash screen where you’re trying to make it sound like allergies are all fake. Lots of people are getting hurt by other people (parents, friends, restaurant servers, etc) who refuse to believe allergies are real or the result of “weak will” and ignore the person saying they’re allergic. People seeing your splash screen and not watching your video will see that as confirmation that they’re right about all allergies being fake.
You’re so inspiring and beautiful, I can’t believe you don’t have more subscribers!
My friend had gluten sensitivity. He was working with his doctor to escape his gluten-free diet for a normal diet and to tolerate gluten.
As an almost dietitian, I can say these things definitely are phony, but the symptoms they experience may still be due to foods. You’re much better off trying to eliminate various foods one at a time and see how you feel.
Back in 5th grade I found out I was allergic to gluten and dairy (through blood work). I can say this, my oh my have the food options expanded heaps. I am so grateful they have too. Tapioca bread was the only gluten free thing they sold in my small town for the longest time. Nasty stuff.
I eat bread every day.but when I cut it out for a few days my brain fog goes. and start losing weight. I also feel less muscle soreness.
i have celiac and have been gf for 11 yearsplease keep buying gf food!!! i just paid $3 for a gluten free microwave hot pocket!!! wow!!!!
Me: * diagnosed with maize allergy after food elimination diet *
Allergist: I know nothing about maize allergies but you are obviously allergic. Good luck.
Me: -_I’m essentially allergic to America.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!!! This explains so much of all my symptoms and I’ve been searching for a reason for so long!!
when I was younger and suffering lyme disease I needed bloodwork done often, and the lyme specialist I was seeing noticed in my bloodwork results that I had something that indicated “gluten sensitivity” and recommended I do not consume gluten anymore… I was like 12 and didn’t really understand what she was talking about but I know she never said celiac disease… so I’m confused
Yo Mikly your guest have evil eye. He reminds me of the guy that stole my virginity. Pretty accurate.
Why didn’t you talk about allergy shots? Do they work or not work? I know they don’t work for food allergies but trees/pollens/pets?

Did anybody else hear “Rather than rest on his yannys though”???
One thing to be very clear about is that yes, exposure to fears and anxieties can be a valid treatment just as with allergies, but only in a CONTROLLED setting administered by a trained professional. Forcing exposure onto someone on the internet by, say, refusing to tag does not help them and actually makes it worse. Period. Exposure isn’t the treatment, it’s exposure /therapy/
You are not “helping” them by refusing to put in the minimal effort to be thoughtful and respectful of others’ experiences, and honestly it just seems like a justification for a lack of empathy due to not being able to understand and/or thinking person shouldn’t have that “silly” fear or reaction to a trauma trigger in the first place
I had allergy tests in early 90s, in two phases. One was the skin prick test mentioned here, and the allergists (Kaiser-Permanente) had a fun reading it; I even had a reaction to the plain water “control”. The 2nd test was a patch test with these little pads of various oils in little button size thingummies that were attached to my back in strips. This included things like lanolin, cinnamon oil, peanut, etc, etc, etc… I didn’t see this type mentioned in this vid.
what I find sad is that people have lost the ability to know their food. It is not necessary to wait for a big agro/food company to develop gluten free products to eat gluten free. Their is more than wheat and other gluten cereals in the world of mother nature. I can happily eat non-gluten without resorting to any ‘fad’ products. The world is bursting with natural non-gluten products, i.e. naturally occurring in nature without factory transformation. Always has been.
I loved this video overall, but the thing about anxiety because of allergies iffed me a bit. I understand if the person doesn’t have that strong of an allergy or if the fear is irrational, but as someone with an extreme food allergy, I get anxiety because the ‘what ifs’ that you mentioned have actually happened plenty of times to me, and many of the fears I told myself were irrational actually ended up happening. I am usually okay with my allergies but I do feel anxious, and many times that actually saved my life.
After a long time I realised I have a gluten sensitivity that was really affecting my health and mental health.
I always felt incredibly tired, all the time, I had muscle pains all over my body, joint pains, an eczema rash that would come back over and over again. I would change my diet and still my digestion would be bad. I had terrible mood swings, irritability and depressive moods. My sinuses hurt, my neck was always stiff, daylight would be harsh on my eyes and I would have this brain fog making it really hard to think and concentrate on anything. That brain fog was probably the most annoying symptom because I could become so annoyed that even after having slept enough, drinking a coffee I would still have no energy.
Then my mom did extensive testing for allergies on herself. After a lifetime of pain, fatigue and other symptoms she was diagnosed with multiple allergies including gluten. I quickly looked up the symptoms for gluten sensitivity and I realised I had all of them. I changed my diet overnight and two years later I havent had the same complaints.
I really miss something so simple as a sandwich. I used to eat so much bread. I’ve gone of my gluten free diet multiple times to cheat and I feel the effects the days afterward. It’s not worth it. A gluten sensitivity does make eating out, buying food more difficult and expensive. And I have to explain myself to everyone every time because they are sceptical. I have done a simple test for gluten intolerance but it came up negative, however for me it’s very clear that it doesn’t do me any good.
I went to multi allergist with decades experience. I dont have reactions like stomach aches, I have were I get rashes, itching, mouth feeling cut up, tongue hurting, lips feeling weird, other stuff he did testing nothing showed up. But he saw results when I came in. He told me go by my results. Because allergy testing can only test for certain enzymes. So after going to so many doctors over years im frustrated. I really dont know what to do anymore. An my kids have allergies too, but they do show up on tests.
My doctor tested my blood and said I was allergic to shellfish, egg and millk but never gave an epi pen.. is that normal?
I used to have a milk allergy from age 1-3 I would throw up for 3days if I had it. I am allergic to latex now, get hives all over my body and allergy to bananas really bad pain in mouth and swollen lips. I have others but they are main ones.
When the dog moved, in the video it scared the life out of me.
