Carrageenan, a fibrous ingredient found in a wide variety of foods, is made from red seaweed. In its pure form, it is considered gluten-free. The food additive is used in a variety of products, including products labeled as “gluten-free.” How Carrageenan Is Used.
If you see Carrageenan, then it is better to avoid that product. There is usually a good alternative without it. Along with that also make sure that there are no additional additives. Even in some of the gluten-free products, this ingredient is present. Many baked gluten-free foods contain this harmful ingredient.
In the end I think we will find out that the type of seaweed and/or the fact the chips and Nori wraps are safe – free from gluten proteins but other parts of the seaweed used as salt preservative or to produce carrageenan and alginates have a gluten like proteins else it is an entirely different GI and autoimmune response for which celiac and NCGS folks are more susceptible. From what I can tell, there isn’t any soy or malt (and since malt is gluten, this was labeled gluten free) in frozen yogurt. I did some research and came across carrageenan! Yikes.don’t know WHY they put this stuff in our food.
Carrageenan is a natural ingredient found in a lot of gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan or vegetarian goods. Canned or bottled coconut milk, almond milk, hemp milk, lactose-free milk, greek yogurts, puddings, and many other dairy substitutes and products often contain carrageenan as a ‘natural’ thickener.Carrageenan is an additive used to thicken, emulsify, and preserve foods and drinks. It’s a natural ingredient that comes from red seaweed (also called Irish moss).
Still, like gluten, carrageenan is everywhere and avoiding it means avoiding a lot of processed foods including most ready made milk substitutes– Silk Soy Milk, Almond Breeze and Whole Foods 365 Organic Ricemilk all use carrageenan as a thickener. It is also an ingredient in most ice creams. There are also carrageenan-free almond milks and daily-free beverages, ice cream without carrageenan and organic foods that are made without the additive. You may find that carrageenan-free beverages tend to separate, but you can simply shake them up before drinking.Carrageenan is made from parts of various red algae or seaweeds and is used for medicine.
Carrageenan is used for coughs, bronchitis, tuberculosis, and intestinal problems. The French use a form.Carrageenan is used in a variety of foods such as ice cream, cottage cheese, jelly, and pudding, yet — due to its plant-based source — it’s most popularly used in dairy-free vegan.Generally, it is safe, natural, vegan, halal, kosher and gluten free.
Druids Grove Refined Kappa Carrageenan ☮ Vegan ⊘ Non-GMO Gluten-Free OU Kosher Certified 8 oz. by Druids Grove.Carrageenan is a broad term used to describe a variety of food-grade polysaccarhides (and a non food-grade derivative which is technically known as poligeenan) obtained from many different species of seaweed.Food-grade carrageenan has been used in cooking for hundreds of years as a thickening, stabilizing and gelling agent.Druids Grove Refined Kappa Carrageenan ☮ Vegan ⊘ Non-GMO ❤ Gluten-Free ✡ OU Kosher Certified 8 oz. $19.99 ($2.50 / 1 Ounce) In stock on June 21, 2020.
To say there is no MSG in carrageenan is splitting hairs. The question is how much “processed free glutamic acid” is contained in a product. If carrageenan doesn’t have anything to do with MSG, then why not label the foods “NO MSG”?
Why, because that is illegal and you can’t label a product “NO MSG” if it contains “processed free glutamic acid”.

see my recent video on Coffee and Gluten Sensitivity for full details on that issue.
Oatmeal itself does not contain wheat but is often produced/package in places that also produce/package other foods containing gluten. If you are allergic you should consume gluten free labeled oatmeal, otherwise, you will be ok:)
Ok, The cheeky chick pea is a very cool name for sure. I think we all should come up with new vegan nicknames for you. How about “Meat-free Mama”? “Beauty and the Broccoli”? “Gluten Free Goddess”? Ok, last one. “Ashely B. Compassionate”. You could end each video with “Don’t forget your ABC’s (Ashley B Compassionate). Good huh? HA! Ok, maybe stick with Living Free Ashley. Loved the cheese. Thanks for telling us the mistakes that happened the first time.
Yuri high i just subscribed after watching a few of your videos good work man keep it up
I wish my country had something like Thrive market, it seems like a really good idea and I would def welcome more healthy and g-free/d-free alternatives since I am a vegetarian and too much gluten is messing with my stomach
What do you get when you eat out being dairy free and gluten free?
Excellent information! Thank you doctor. I’m gluten and rice sensitive. Three months ago I started eating dairy, within a few days I got a Uti that would not go away with any antimicrobial or antibiotics. I now have a irrestitidal cisticis. I stopped dairy once again, and all of my symptoms are gone! I also stopped my high in caffeine black tea.
I would love to see some more fitness videos again. I love the food videos, but would also love to see other areas of your life as well. (this is definitely my 3rd comment on here, but I kept thinking of new things throughout the video so sorry)
Please make a recipes video with the items you got in this video
what are your thoughts on Tapioca, is it good to eat, does it have any nutrients in it or is it a processed food i should stay a way from?
I have celiac disease. What advice do u have for eating out because cross contamination being is biggest problem?
This is so true! I always thought I was eating so healthy, but could not figure out why I was so sick. I had a lot of autoimmunity going on, acne, eczema, allergies starting, infertility and chronic inflammation, but once I got off dairy, gluten, soy, and processed sugar I have been a whole different person. Skin cleared up of all disease (I was on steroid creams before that to manage, but did not cure) and now I am shocked. You have nothing to lose just trying this.
I have heard that there’s a difference between kappa carrageenan and agar agar, as far as “set” is concerned, with kappa carrageenan producing a more taut mixture and finished texture. Thanks for proofing the recipe and posting the results!
a lot of the other birch benders mixes are vegan if anybody cares, chocolate chip are amazinggg
It would be awesome if you included links and full names of products in the description box. <3
I wonder is this more an issue with US milk, it has far greater additives like hormone injections and the cattle are grain fed. In the UK dairy is more natural cattle are grass fed.
maybe this is completely off topic but I really love the way you did your hair <3 i think it looks very pretty:)
wait a minute, forever Ive been told grain pasta is the best way to go vs white flour, wheat, etc. now your saying grain consumption should be kept to a minimum?
Love watching your videos super positive and informative
Yes ma’am thank you!! I can’t do dairy and gluten anymore either and I so needed some recommendations
Probier ich heute!!! Hab schon mal ein ähnliches Rezept ausprobiert, das hat mir gar nicht geschmeckt.. aber mit Senf kann ichs mir richtig gut vorstellen!!:)
Was für einen Mixer hast du?
I love your videos! I’m excited for the next ones:)
I just made some Gluten free/ Vegan pumpkin spice cookies Recipe is on my channel
I wondered about milk because in reality if cow’s are eating gluten ( grains) your getting it anyways. Again same as butter made from milk. Right your ingesting what any animal has been eating. Well its still confusing, is organicgrass fed ok? Or just all dairy products.. Ops I guess it doesn’t matter, veggies without BUTTER noooooo lol
OMG.. so non cheese!!!!???? Whole my life every single morning toasts with cheese// I got rid of whole triticae family plants’ products… and cheeses as well? What else left me to eat?
So Great VERY GREAT I love your info videos!! Tausend Thanks Dr Clark Chiro 😉
Lactose nearly killed me! I mean I ended up in hospital vomiting blood due to esophagus erosion and I was in near kidney failure. It turns out I was celiac.
I noticed I tolerate goat milk better than let’s say, rice milk. I only drink goat milk once or twice a week. Same for rice milk. I alternate between the 2 types, but frankly I think I’m gonna give up the rice milk completely. It just doesn’t feel right, I get a bit of bloating after it.
Must come to catch up with you in B & create more of your favorites!
Eeek! Ezekiel 4:9 bread contains wheat. It’s the first ingredient. This bread is NOT safe for gluten intolerant people and is not a good choice for those avoiding wheat.
I have to say that the vegan cheese scene has improved greatly over the last couple years. This one looks great too.
Still have to try to make my own cheese at home. Maybe I will try this recipe because it seems really good even if the texture is not how it was supposed to be! Thank you so much for sharing
Also, Simple Mills needs to work with you because you definitely just got them a bunch of new customers!!
Oooh.. this looks like it would be great on a margherita pizza, right?? I think Daiya might have stopped selling theirs, I need to make my own!
Hold the box up to the camera your viewers can see the name on the box.
My test showed that i’m ok with cheese but milk showed.Cant i just stick to Lactose free milk?
ive been gluten free for almost two years and now i have to give up everything that has a milk ingredient? or only specific milk products like milk, yogurt, cheese, ect
thx for sharing your recipe gluten free everytime, it help me a lot since i have stopped gluten
I would recommend trying sprouted sour grain bread! It is a lot easier to digest for people who are gluten-sensitive
Dr. Clark: when I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease, my doctor took me off all COW milk product, but said I could try goat yogurt & cheese, sheep cheese, and buffalo/bison mozzarella, which are all pretty easy for me to find at local stores. Any comments on non-cow milk products?
BTW, my mother had rheumatoid arthritis (gnarled, painful fingers), stopped all xcow milk products on her doctor’s advice, and though it took eight long months, her pain completely disappeared. Sadly, her fingers still looked like witch’s fingers, but she never had any pain as long as she stayed away from all cow-juice products.
Since you mentioned milk fats in addition to milk proteins, does this mean that one should avoid clarified butter/ghee aswell? You’ve said in an earlier video that it’s OK to eat ghee, as all of the proteins and milk sugars are removed. Please clarify! Thank you.
I have the same container as you! I love it!! This looks fun to make! I’m glad it worked out for you the second time. This would be great in pasta oh my gosh!!
omg i literally prefer the pow pasta over normal pasta, i think the texture is better
I can’t do soy and almond milk doesn’t have enough protein or calories in it so I do lactose free. There are organic lactose free milks now too besides just the skim, you just have to look for them not every store carries them. I have found that, personally, eating something that is made lactose free works out a lot better than trying to eat a regular dairy product and taking the pills. Goats milk is naturally lower in lactose and I have pretty good luck most of the time with goat cheese and other goat milk products.
Fear of all gluten is just a fad and it will pass as new fads come along. The same goes for “inflammatory foods” fad. I understand Americans may be fed up with processed wheat because it’s everywhere and almost everybody is fat and unfit, but for a healthy person with no gluten intolerance or allergy, there is no reason to neurotically avoid gluten. I’ve been eating whole grains as a part of mixed, balanced diet all of my life, and I am not full of inflammation and my gut doesn’t leak. People would be much happier if they didn’t listen to everything these pseudoscientific nutritionist make up.
Yes please give an update if you make this again & perfect it. Great recipe
Oh my bad I thought it contained gluten, wheat and rye as well as some other grains do. If you want to be 100% sure look up “what contains gluten”.
I just use water in place of milk for my gluten free/dairy free pancakes. Works just as good.
Great video! Love your bubbly energy. I’m still yet to make my own vegan cheese, but it’s something I definitely need to try! Never seen Yoggu here in the UK but maybe I can find an alternative?
I had this problem and went lactose freealot of the information of gluten says these often co-occur or the lactose intolerance is temporary until your gut heals itself, So I was interested in hearing the exact reasons for this. However I went lactose free and use lactose free milk and cheese, and my symptoms disappeared. Is this a different issue then? Would the milk still have the problematic protein?
I love your channel!! I just subscribed!! I’m lactose intolerant and many gluten food don’t settle In my stomach very well I love this video! It’s a BIG help!⚡️ xxC
(I’m a youtuber too! I’m almost at 200 subs! would love to support other channels!✨)
This doctor explains it in such a simple terminologies easy to understand for all lay men like me…Thanks Doc. Keep it up.
Well question then I have celiac disease it’s not good.. so question is what milk and yogurt can I eat?
what about butter?many nutritionist claim it is one of the best source of fat out there
The funny thing is, with me, if I eat dairy with gluten I seldom have any trouble. My gluten intolerance results in severe indigestion. Dairy along with that seems to nullify the effect. Dairy on its own doesn’t appear to cause any problems. This is fascinating stuff. Makes me rethink what I’m doing. Thanks so much!
If you are wheat intolerant does it also mean you are allergic to gluten as well?? please advise??
I would totally try this. Saved to my recipe to do list. I’ve heard of chickpea miso but don’t think I’ve ever seen it in the shops. Look forward to seeing your next attempts.
All Milk products and things made from milk. THat’s what you’d need to do to eliminate milk as a potential cross reactor.
Everyone has different tastes, there are so many different vegan cheeses etc available now that everyone should be able to find something they like!
Check out the Chosen Foods website for their line of Infused Avocado Oil Sprays! There’s Pumpkin Spice, Spiced Chai, Simply Cinnamon, and Warm Gingerbread. So perfect for the waffle iron and holiday baking!! https://chosenfoods.com/collections/infused-avocado-oil-sprays
I’ve have a wheat intolerance and have in recent months became increasingly sensitive to milk aswell, should I cut out milk completely or is lactose free milk okay?
hi. Can you eat oats on a gluten free diet? Thanks in advance for your answer. My sister and I both have Hashimoto’s and we are ovo-lacto vegetarians.
Def want to try the pancakes. My 8yr old is on the spectrum and is a pancake monster. However all the gluten free recipes I’ve tried taste like cardboard. Do these rise well? Next time you make them (or the brownies) can you show us?
The almond milk shredded mozzarella from Trader Joe’s is such a good cheese substitute it ACTUALLY tastes like cheese not rubber
Omg the Birch Blenders is absolutely amazing! Will never buy any other mix
I just use water in place of milk for my gluten free/dairy free pancakes. Works just as good.
tough time gaining weight on paleo? I feel you man. But can’t you do stuff like: drink olive oil, eat bacon, eat coconut oil, mash jewel/garnet yams? That stuff is loaded with calories. Yams are high starch, but most of that should be ok right?
They are bi-directional. Eating the cross-reactive food such as milk, can increase the number of gluten antibodies.
Since you mentioned milk fats in addition to milk proteins, does this mean that one should avoid clarified butter/ghee aswell? You’ve said in an earlier video that it’s OK to eat ghee, as all of the proteins and milk sugars are removed. Please clarify! Thank you.
An interesting thought, but the PROTEINS are the problem, not what they add to the milk.
I knew about cross-allergies but had no idea about gluten-milkprotein!? Does it work the other way around as well? I have a son that is allergic to milkprotein and he sometimes get awful stomachpains and needs to use the w.c. Could it be the gluten? I asked his pediatrician on our yerly check up and the doctor didnt think he should go off gluten ‘”since everybody gets better when they quit gluten and then we wont know what the real culprit is”. I mean..?!?
That brownie and cookie mix tho! Love healthy alternatives! I love promoting a healthy lifestyle on my channel too!
Lactose is not the problem, it’s the milk proteins. Lactose is a sugar.
grat video…wish i had me that doctor a year ago.my belly started to bloat up until i looked like i was 6 months pregnant, the doctors had no idea and just said that i was fat.i went to a specialist that did an exam and told me that i had lots of damage at the bottom of my stomach and that i was eating something that i should not be eating.I decided to take milk out of my diet and within weeks my stomach disappeared.
Hi there when you talk about ‘milk products’ is that only cow? I have been taken off cow dairy but told that goat/sheep milk ok??
I just dmed you on instagram! I’ve been feeling a bit down these days and wanted to ask you for some tips or advice. I’d be awesome if you could read it!
I have noticed that when I eat pasta, bread stuff my sinuses get real mucusy. any Idea what I might be allergic too? Is that a symptom of gluten intolerance?
Simple mills is based out of our town, Chicago. You should read up on founder kaitlin Smith. Good products u presented.
Your skin is glowing! Are you on birth control? If so what type?
Almond milk is not really “milk” like I’m talking about here. I’m referring to milk from cow, goat or sheep.
Also, since I started drinking coffee a few months ago, I’ve noticed after I’ve had a cup my sinuses feel blocked and I occasionally et nosebleeds, could this be caused by the cross reaction issue to being gluten intolerant?
This is so interesting! Since I went gluten free 7 years ago (due to severe allergy and possibility of celiac), I have noticed I DO have a VERY similar reaction (migraine) to eating certain kinds of cheese. I get a headache like a hangover. It’s really strange! But I will try going off dairy too to see what happens.
I can’t have wheat or meat and have stopped dairy this is great I live in uk pls email me with any stories or advice ect on [email protected] thanks
200 ml is one third of a cup?
What fking cups do you have?!
600 ml?
Normally a cup is 236.6 ml!
This is So True! I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in March 2012 and I was not having much improvement until I cut out dairy completely. Now, I feel like a new person! My gastrointestinal problems are minimal now and I have lost weight and have much more energy. There are some great products in the stores now that you can substitute for milk products. My favorites are from the “So Delicious” and “Earth Balance” brands.
I’ve never heard of chickpea miso, will have to look for that. Too bad it didn’t come out harder so it was shred-able, but glad it’s tasty! Looks great tho! So many meltable options for it:)
if your a vegetarian and using whey protein how do i get the proper protein intake if i get rid of that? i use split pea protein also. Thanks for the info im off of coffe as well because it was a cross reactor.
I’m pretty much gluten and dairy free so thanks for the video! Great job! Best!
thank youuu!! I needed this!! I have PCOS and have been looking for alternatives to my favorite foods
What are other cross reacting foods? Milk, coffee and? I have been substituting coconut milk for cooking oils etc. I wonder if coconut milk is a cross reactor. It doesn’t have cows milk but it has a specific protein it’s high in. I also wonder about meats that might cross react.
I use Almond milk daily, which is not dairy..should I stay away from that too?
