While most guidelines recommend moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week, working at a high intensity can help you burn more calories, save time with shorter workouts, and increase your fitness level.Exercise intensity is a subjective measure of how hard physical activity feels to you while you’re doing it — your perceived exertion. Your perceived exertion level may be different from what someone else feels doing the same exercise.
Blood sugar can be reduced by less than 12 weeks through HIIT. 50 different studies found that high intensity interval training (HIIT) reduces blood sugar and improves insulin resistance by continuous exercise. Based on this information, high intensity exercises are particularly beneficial for people at risk of type 2 diabetes.Although exercise training is the best method to improve VO 2peak, the guidelines of most academic societies recommend 150 or 75 min of moderateor vigorousintensity physical activities, respectively, every week to gain health benefits.
For general health and primary and secondary cardiovascular prevention, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been recognized as an efficient exercise protocol with short exercise.Benefits of High-Intensity Exercise Training to Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Controlled Study Respiration. 2017;93(5):301-310. doi: 10.1159/000464139. You two are the cutest!! Like seriously adorable!! Oh and your workouts are so amazing I just love you guys keep doing what you do!
I am a newbie at it. all i did was 15 min and i was exhausted. 1minute on with a 10 second rest each time. I felt a blast. I am hungry all day. I eat pretty good. Im burning good calories
I notice a significant increase in my speed and endurance during longer runs since I have incorporated HIIT into my schedule…
Hi Dr thank you for sharing your experience with i broke my scaphiod and had surgery with the screw in side and my question is will I get full range motion back replay back plz thanx
Good suggestions Good for all. Anusorn T. Bangkok Thailand
Would you recommend this for a person who has had two acl reconstructions with partial meniscectomy in both knees as well?
Whats the difference between HIIT and cardio? How do you do cardio properly and hiit properly?
Would you still only do it 3 to 4 times a week if it was a 20 minute workout?
I love your HIIT videos
Thanks for telling me that it should be done only 4 times a week
I was doing it daily
Thanks again
Love xoxo
Was this a pre-cursor or foreplay to their expected love-making or were they really talking about HIIT?
I won’t judge because I tend to do a lot of use of “eh, ah, euh” and I find your content more than enrichful. Besos miles
How should I be eating with this workout routine? Also, how can I know if I’m not being intense enough to get proper results?
Well I wish I would have known this. I did HIIT for 45min everyday for a week. My heart strated freaking out on me this morning.
Regarding the criticism that HIIT isn’t particularly “time efficient” over regular/traditional steady state cardio because of all the recovery time required. This overlooks one important factor… shower time.
A HIIT session involving, say, six 30 second sprints with 2:30 recovery would take 18 minutes. Total time about 30 minutes with warm up and cool down (I never bother with cool down). It is my experience that not much sweating takes place with this type of exercise. A shower wouldn’t be absolutely required. 30 minutes of steady state cardio? Shower required.
In fact, the aforementioned HIIT routine would like be more like the equivalent of 40 minutes of steady state cardio as far as mitochondrial adaptive potential.
The time argument doesn’t stand up to close scrutiny to people who have actually practiced both steady state cardio and HIIT (and who realize HIIT is better, or that steady state cardio is overrated as part of the “calorie model” of exercise).
I have a question. I do 3-4 times a week but how much time should it be? ( 1 hiit workout) Sorry for my English.:(
people keep saying it doesn’t work. does it? I’ve gained 40 lbs from depression
Danggg can I find a love like this!? Lol.. Oh, and also thank you for the HITT workout info
Does interval training induce eccentric left ventricular hypertrophy as well or better than steady state aerobic base training?
Does HIIT enlarge the internal dimensions so it can pump more blood per beat?
The information online is highly mixed.
as we consistently follow some HIIT routines, they become less hard for us, should we increase the intensity for the same expenditure of the calories or the time must be increased?
Im trying to uplift people through my clothing and get them to chase their dreams no matter what.Check out my shirts and never forget to chase your dreams!

Torture listening to this unprofessional. Hire a speaker stay next to him on stage, nod your head, leave your ego of presenting your research besides its not even a breakthrough so chill. ciao
Hi I am a bit confused if anyone could help me would be very nice! SO i did Low Intensity Cardio about 5 to 6 times per week for 40 to 45 minutes per session…I lost 3 Kg in 20 Days…then I hear how LIIS actually causes loss of muscle and it is much better to do HIIT so…I did HiIT now for about 15 days(on elliptical and really intense)….I notice my legs are firmer but I havent lost ANY WEIGHT OR CENTIMETERS…I feel Like i am not making any progress with HiIT I feel bloated and feel like all my dieting and training is for nothing….why doesnt hiit work if everyone says it is te best fat burning exercise?
What is HIIT? Baby don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me, no more… LOL
Which kind of workouts are best for losing 2 pounds a week? And how often should you do them?
Due to medico-legal concerns and the sheer number of questions I receive from these videos, I can no longer answer questions left in the comments. If you have a medical issue and would like more information, go to https://www.drdavidgeier.com/resources/ for other ways I can help you.
I was thinking to myself while i was watching “i would love to see the outtakes on this” as you could feel her nervousness……. pleasantly surprised:)
hi..do i need warming up before i do HIIT?.And how long should be the warming up..thanks
eewewww the right earphone isnt working and it literally makes me cringe so hard
Tell us something new… This information is common sense.
Also, the guy doesn’t seem to confident and knowledgeable about his speech.
So training workouts around the 10min-20min mark with high intensity is the best for health?!
Stuff like bodywaight workouts (freeletics)
This is super interesting video!!!)) Keep up the good work guys!
bro.. you are not sprinting. Thats not high intensity, u go from fast walk to like.. half-run…
I have sedentary job, so how much time should I be spendin working out daily to see a significant difference in my body
Don’t do too much HIIT people. I did HIIT for 5-6 a week for five months. My testosterone levels were completely fucked afterwards and I had little to none libido. And didn’t matter what I ate, my body just sucked it up in an hour it felt like. Back then I felt so good when I ate heavy calorie food because my body was constantly in a calorie deficit. Even though pounds were shed like crazy and abs were visible, you felt like shit 90% of the time. Feels good to have gone through such an experience though. To have the understanding.
I have Lupus with pain in my joints. I started your Hiit Low Impact. My question is how many 10 minute workouts do I do per day or week. Thank you so much!
Is hiit a good idea for people who are literally just starting to work out? Or is it something you may need to loose some weight first and then try?
im a vegertain it to hard to not sit for to long beofre or after working out help me
i do hiit 4times a week. i mean i do it sat sun mon and tue… is that okkkkkk?or i need to take one day rest between those 4days???? can u suggest pls……….. love u
I did HIIT cardio on the treadmill yesterday as I’m training for an amateur boxing match. I did 4×3 minute sprints with two minute walking breaks in between. The first sprint at 15 kmh, the second at 15.5 kmh, the third at 16.0 kmh and the fourth at 16.5 kmh. It caused me to do my fastest average mile pace, which was 5 minutes 52 seconds.
I like this video. Just information without all the usual nonsense. That’s a nice change of pace. As a TV professional, though, I feel the need to make a comment.
Jump Cuts are bad… Wireless Lav’ mics are good.
Thanks that was not only informative, but also made me smile (:
So does this adaptation differ for different muscles? Could I apply this same principle to my weight training, say with biceps, forearms, lower back, shoulders? I’m not sure quadriceps mechanisms transfer exactly the same way to other muscles in the body.
18 kmph for a minute, 8 kmph for the consecutive minute and then back to 18kmph for another minute. go till you can or till you start to feel your throat constrict. best so far…
Similar question to the one below. Is it too much to do 2-3 HIIT and 2-3 Strength training a week? How do you suggest balancing HIIT and strength?
so if I start HIIT on a treadmill does this mean I shouldn’t do other workouts (e.g elliptical) everyday?
aw man hiit workouts are the best! hiit, and spin class….and zumba…top 3 favourite ways to work out ^_^
I just started doing HIIT and ive lost 7 pounds in a week! Sticking to this workout from now on!
I’ve been trying to do this 6 times a week what else should I do to lose weight when I’m not doing this
are HIIT workouts more effective at burning fat for beginners than cardio+strength training?
HITT sessions have been around since Ancient Rome. Seneca the younger (philosopher of stoicism) talks about doing them when he had little time.
would it be okay to do lite cardio like walking on the days i dont have HIIT
Ohhhhhh you guys are do freaking cuteee!!! Kelly is SO beautiful, look at her eyes…they practically glow!!!
I just found your videos. And I cannot wait to get started! I’m obese at 5’4 weighing in at 257 #’s (well today it’s 253, I’m just starting). I can’t wait to start losing even more. So far all I’ve done is walking. I’ve begun cutting out sodas and caffeine also. Three days in I feel like a crazy person right now….
One of my main concerns is excess skin. I’m terrified that I’m going to lose all this weight and still not be happy with how far I’ve come… Granted it won’t stop me from doing it, I would feel better armed with knowledge. Could you do a video about excess skin?
Thanks you guys and I am so happy to have found your channel!
Totally noticed the increased cardiovascular endurance. Last year about this time I was going to run a 5K with my church…but I hate running. So I didn’t really do much before. However! I did a lot of HIIT workouts (no more than 3-4 a week though!) and I ended up averaging a 10-minute mile, which is HUGE. For me especially. Because… I really, REALLY hate running.
Thanks guys! I love your advice and workouts. This is my number one place to come to for new ways to challenge my body.:) Keep up the great work!
Is this really good for fat loss and also what are good types of exercises to do I would really appreciate it if you reply
if you people wish to get ripped prompt without spending a single another minute in the gym, then you have to look closely this video tutorial SIXPP.COMA middle-aged woman who looked like someone’s cleaning lady, a shrieking adolescent lunatic and a talkshow host with an orange face… It didn’t add up. Suicide wasn’t invented for people like this
How can u do hiit with just running or sprinting.. can anyone help me? Or running up and down stairs? Any suggestions people?
I’m wondering is it possible to do only HIIT and lose weight?
Hi!
First at all: I love your work and dedication. Love your videos!
I have a question:
About HIT exercises, is there any specific concerns regarding age and limitations?? I am myself 50 and I wonder should I or should not do some of the HIT exercises.
Thanks a lot!
Keep doing your god work!
Needs to learn to speak English before giving a presentation in English language.
Anyone else feel like ravenously hungry for a couple days after a good HIIT workout? Love them, but it’s driving me nuts, I eat about 1700 calories a day when I workout and I’m still stomach growling hungry, I’m only 5’3″ so I def don’t need more food lol
An excellent and thorough explanation of hiit. I read a couple books on hiit, worked up to three times a week for about seven months. Then five months ago stopped all “formal” exercise and worked with a heavy daily activity in rebuilding my remote log cabin. First, it would have been almost impossible to do all the work in my physical condition prior to the hiit program. Second, after five months of hard work and long hours of activity, my conditioning is not as good as it was when I started the project. For me, it’s clear that a very active lifestyle doesn’t match hiit for overall fitness.
Definitely great youtube channel. I don’t subscribe to many fitness channels but these know what their talking bout. Nd good workouts too. Love the work
Good talk but I don’t agree with vo2 being defined as “fitness level”
Good talk, but why does it look like the first letter of his name lost a sword fight?
Awesome lecture but like @Arjan Meijer H.I.T said: fix the title, please.
Uh guys make a cute couple god bless uh both.. n thnx much for these home workouts
i think this is the key for me to further speed up the progress of getting rid of my insulin resistance and speed up my weight loss.
i the last 20 months i lost about 27kg of weight and gained back around 4 kg of weight and i got rid of y diabetes type 2 very fast with a ketogenic diet.
but the slow-down of the progress and even gaining back some of the weight is something that happens on every diet where you are in a caloric deficit almost every day.
i still have to lose 20kg of weight (or lose 25kg in fat and gain 5kg of muscle:-) ). but everything slowed down. some call it a slow or damaged metabolism.
i think it might be that the amount of mitochondria simply decreased over the time and now my metabolism is slow.
but as it looks now with high intensity interval training or maybe better sprint interval training i can bring a new growth impulse to my mitochondria that is coming from physical exercise and not from food. and therefor i can speed up my metabolism again which gives me obviously a new push the direction of my health journey.
so my weight loss will pick up again (better call it fat loss, i don’t want to lose muscle and my ketones make sure of that:-) ), my energy level would go up which obviously feels good and the rest of my insulin resistance will also disappear.
so i hope, i have found the missing piece in the puzzle.
keto + HiIT/SIT + good sleep + beneficial supplements (d3, k2, magnesium, fish/krill oil, chromium, alpha lipoic acid…)
six pack, here i come:-)
Plzz do not confuse H.I.T (high intensity training) with H.I.I.T. (high intensity INTERVAL training). Wrong title.
You should go to woo&pep website if you’d like to learn more about food mates.
this is norwegian english, so pathetic, I hope he is not making it up, hvordan kan du snakke sånn?? Erdu helt seriøs nå, ellendig:P
I used to do HIIT Sprint sessions 3/week before i got injured. It was awesome, but very tough. Pushing yourself hard every workout session can feel draining. Afterwards though i felt amazing. I think you have build up your physical fittness before attempting HIIT.
when is the best time to do it?
morning right after waking up or it doesn’t matter?
Train. Most important thing is how well your heart rate recovery 1-2 minutes improves. Can also show overtraining as well as your resting heart rate. You can stress your heart more than you think if you don’t know your own limits!
Øivind Rognmo, interesting work you are doing, but ‘SMC’, good argument and well said.
i find it hard to believe that a higher percentage of women do enough exercise than men.
Excellent info! Thank you. I started interval training today and I’m hopeful for changes.
I tried doing HIIT 7days straight the last 2 days was not very good i felt very weak
impressive… they found the Norwegian with the worst English pronunciation at the university…
Where can I find the studies he used for the presentation? Graphics and stuff…
They laughed when I told them I would burn calories with Exyph Fat Loss, but then I showed them the results. Do a search on google for Exyph Fat Loss to see their reaction.
damn.. no wonder i get all sweaty out of nowhere during the night time. it’s my 9th day today and I’ve literally worked out 8 days and took only a day off. I’ve been continuesly doing HIITi love HIIT so much but I’ll be careful now. and take REST.
My question is, knowing that being fit and active extends your life, why don’t more people do it?
When you HEAR, accent, pronunciation, body language comes in the way. When you LISTEN, nothing else matters.
How do you spare your knees and joints in the long term? I haven’t seen many 50+ / 60+ doing hiit. I enjoy it full when I practise it but I would also like to keep it safe on the long term but I guess I found the solution myself ☉
My hiit is 200 jumpropes, 20 squats, 10 chin ups no rest for 6 reps, is that good? 10-15 minutes range btw. Always intense Heavy breathing every time I finish my HIIT version
Thanks for the Video clip! Excuse me for the intrusion, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you tried Dinanlinson Crazy Tactic Approach (probably on Google)? It is a great exclusive guide for discovering how to use short burst interval training to get that beach body minus the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my close friend Aubrey at last got excellent success with it.
How does this square with the work of Dr Inigo San Millan ( https://peterattiamd.com/inigosanmillan/) and Dr. George Brooks ( https://news.berkeley.edu/2018/05/23/rehabilitating-lactate-from-poison-to-cure/)?
According to San Millan and Dr Peter Attia the people with the healthiest mitochondria are pro cyclist, cross country skiers, and marathoners. According to San Millan and Attia it seems the reason for the healthy mitochondria is that they train 80% of the time in zone 2 65-70% VO2 max.
Can anyone shed light on this as it relates to Dr Gibala’s findings with interval training?
This video really starts at around 13 min point to say what it has to say, the rest is just rehashing. He did ok, just needs to stand still when talking, the talk isn’t an exercise session. One thing really bothers me, that’s with high intensity you run high risk of rupturing the plaque found in so many people these days. I believe you need a non-atherogenic diet for at least a month before you start in on exercise, even moderate. That would be a whole food plant-based diet. Otherwise you raise your risk very significantly for a heart attack or stroke. Studies from 1975-80 on 5000 people in Rhode Island showed those who jogged (moderate to high intensity) got 7 times more heart attacks than those who watched TV. Why he thinks exercise, esp high intensity, is good for all of us, probably has to do with his own age. It’s true that sedentary people versus active ones have more risk, but high intensity exercise is more than just being active, such as walking, etc.
What a english… they should engage someone who can speak it
The comments below? Too many supposed experts. This is just common sense now that we understand it.
do hiit 2-3 times a week with regular cardio on the days i dont do hiit or just rest on those days??
Listening to this was like listening to reggae music………stop go stop go stop go stop go..AAAAAAGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
Great information…………TERRIBLE DELIVERY, MOST ANNOYING!!
Except the only type of exercise to show significant neurogenesis is aerobic for long durations. High intensity showed hardly any change at all. Hopefully more studies will be done on HIIT in this regard. Would be nice if further research shows improved in this area.
at least one important thing is missing in this presentation, and that is mitochondrias, which are very important to build a balanced picture of training. oxygen uptake is one variable in the equation, but then one also MUST consider the effects of training on mitochondrias, fat oxidization vs glucose processing by muscle fibres, hydrohen ions, lactate acid, and all these variables affect training in reciprocity. overall: somewhat superficial study/presentation.
He found the bus driver didn’t live as long as the conductor? Wow!
you need to focus the camera on the screen when the presenter is talking so that we can red the slides
The bus driver wasn’t “inactive” all day, he was driving a double decker bus, without the aid of power steering. I suggest the speaker tries to drive one before making such inane remarks. Meanwhile, the bus conductor was {gulp!} walking and sitting.
Hi Doc, i know it’s not related to this video in particular…
but i had an MCL tear 2 months ago and have a possibility that i injured my meniscus because my knee has since refused to bend or stretch completely, it’s always at an angle and i use crutches to walk. I never apply weight to it unless when i’m sitting down, there’s no significant pain at all unless i try to stretch it or bend it.
I’ve been to the hospital but they couldn’t do arthroscopy at that moment because of some complications (and provate hospitals are extremely expensive) so i asked to be discharged so that in the meantime i can continue going to school on crutches since there isn’t much pain anymore.
I’ve since waited for their phonecall and all this time i’ve been at home. and the knee is not getting better or worse.
So, my question is… even after so much time without any surgery, is there a chance i will fully recover?
(Also, the knee doesn’t swell anymore, only my foot, maybe because i haven’t been stepping on it)
This is essentially true but limited to his own bias, as exercise triggers the “Body’s Stress Response”, but triggering the body’s stress response means turning on many genes. FOXO3, BDNF etc…. produces antioxidants that repair and rebuild the body. All form of “Stress” triggers a response… i. e. Heat, Cold all benefit our immune system…

Now they just let anyone stutter and stammer their way through a TEDTalk? TEDx is crap.
Important talk, very important findings, poorly presentet though. Still motivating to keep exercising.
The fitness questions they have on their website are highly inaccurate. They said my vo2max is 57! I’m no where near that
Sorry if it’s a silly question, but does HIIT with weights count as a strength workout?
torture to listen to but information is gold. he should read a public speaking book before doing a TED, first impressions matter
It’s quite difficult to follow this talk… that guy should have asked someone else to talk for him.. that’s my opinion by the way
So the guy has an accent that might sound funny to some. Have you thought about how you would sound speaking another language before judging him?
Interval training has been around since 1912, and no one can argue with its benefits. As a trainer of 28 years, I have always used it when it was/is appropriate for the client; that is the client is able to handle the cardiovascular stresses, biomechanical loads, as well as the metabolic waste of high intensity exercise. The problem now is that experts like you have gone from one extreme in exercise recommendations to another. Now you’re recommending that all people do HIIT without any screening or guidelines regarding exercise progression, safety, or what it really means to be healthy and fit. As a result every money-grabber out there is putting out their own HIIT video and promising people that all they need is 2-3 HIIT workouts and they’re going to be healthy and burn all fat you want and look like a super model. HIIT is a wonderful modality of exercise and it should be incorporated as a part of regular exercise routine but only when the person can incorporate it safely. I have read all the papers I could find online about HIIT, and the studies are all too short and they focus on a single aspect of fitness. There has been no scientific reports on the chronic effects of HIIT when it comes to overall fitness, joint and muscle injuries, cardiovascular events, etc… The least you could do is provide an objective risk/benefit analysis in your studies… I will say it again so you don’t misunderstand me: HIIT is fantastic, but please stop telling people that all they need is 30 minutes of 4 intervals and they will be healthy because nothing in exercise science is that simple or that good! We have very serious health crises in the world, and if you really care about the well being of human kind, teach people how to make health and fitness a priority. Teach them that their body deserves an hour a day of exercise that includes cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility. I keep hearing and reading that the argument for HIIT is that people don’t have the time to exercise. Now, it is true that there are some people who truly don’t have the time to exercise an hour a day, but I know that many people, at least here in the USA, who can make the time to watch the Biggest Loser show, but they can’t find the time to exercise.
There was a presentation on the BBC that demonstrated how a short burst of intense exercise for 1 minute, three times a week can change the way the body store fat. I’ll try to find the video and post it here.
Is this okay. I wake up at 10 eat wait a hour so it’s probably about 1130 by this point I do a hiit workout and if it’s the day I weight train I wait like 5 hours weight train then do another hiit
And do I do weight training everyday or every other day
This is great! Question did you do HIIT before weight training or did you do HIIT in the morning and then weight training in the evening?
This video was 4 years ago, and they literally didn’t even age a day??? lol
We took this information and made an entire method out of it:-) Google: Polykinetics
I was told running on a flat treadmill was a waste of time but you got results
I love your videos!! and I have a question. you said to do HIIT in maximum 4 times a week, but and about your 5 days challenge HIIT workout? There is something different about it?
I lost 10kg by doing HIIT training 4-5 times a week, and a healthy diet:)
One study showed people SAID they’d stick with it. I expect better reasoning/evidence from Mayo Clinic. In the world of fitness people saying they are going to do something means very little. How many ACTUALLY stick with it compared with steady state?
