But warming up before you exercise, especially before engaging in strenuous activity, has very real physiological, and often psychological, benefits. Here’s what to know to get the most out of your warm-up. Benefits of a Proper Warm-Up Warming up prepares your heart, lungs, and muscles for the more strenuous phase, the main focus of your workout.
In general, Moran recommends exercisers do about 10 to 15 minutes of warming up; ACSM says a warmup should be “slow and easy” – think a brisk walk, light jog or easy bike. “The goal is.Dynamic stretching is a popular warm-up to get ready for your workout. Warm up for longer if you feel the need. March on the spot: keep going for 3 minutes. Start off marching on the spot and then march forwards and backwards.
When it comes time for your workout, if you are doing heavy strength training (with barbells or dumbbells), make sure you do some warm-up sets before jumping into the weight you’ll be training with for EACH EXERCISE. Always start with a set using just the bar to work on your form and get your body used to the movement.Warm up before you work out to prepare your body for the impending challenge, even if that challenge is isolated to one muscle group. A warmer body is better able to execute the moves and is less likely to be injured as you crunch, twist, plank and stabilize.Concentrating on sensitive spots will help relax your muscles, which Clark says is the first step in a proper warm up, followed by stretching any tight muscles, and then performing dynamic.

yo i’m finna cry this shit had me out of breath by the end of it. i’m seriously out of shape and so unhealthy, and lately i just all of a sudden have the motivation to get all healthy and fit? i decided to do this warm up before doing day 1 of the 2 weeks shred challenge (i’m following the playlist that chloe ting made on her site), and i’m dying at the warm up??? damn. i’m in for a lot of suffering, but i’m still gonna try hard af lmao

I really need the motivation to work out and stay on track with my weight loss journey, but I always end up falling off track. Hopefully, this time I won’t, I’ve been struggling with weight loss ever since I was 13, and never fully loved myself. Currently, I don’t have a room to work out in peace. Since I share a room with 3 people, there’s limited space so I’ll have to make do with space I have to myself because I don’t want to keep making excuses to myself about why I can’t do it. Before I started her Summer Shred Program, I seriously never worked out for an entire year… I am still on Day 3, yet it’s easier then when I first began. I could barely do the exercises on time before and would have to stop the video a lot. Now I can finally keep up with her videos:)) Doing some of the optional workout videos on the plan actually helped me gain strength, too!!

I have a question… it’s probably very silly, but here goes:
Would the workout be just as effective if we did it in separate portions throughout the day, rather that just in a specific time limit of 25 minutes?
For example, suppose I do the first 15 minutes of the workout now, and later, when I am done with my chores I jump into doing the remainder of the workout, would it be just as effective?
edit: also, this really does burn in the first 3 minutes. Like, WOW. AND it’s a good burn, I feel so refreshed.

My warmup is just a compound movement with 50% of the weight I do for reps and two sets of smaller movements for the same muscles

Typically starting with:
-> Joints rotation (all joints from fingers to toes..)
-> Light Cardio (brisk walking to light jogging to brisk walking again to increase cardiovascular and respiratory rates..)
-> Dynamic Stretching ( All major muscle groups of the body )
-> Sports Specific Exercises(greatly varies)
-> Main Activity(the reason why you warmed up)
-> Static Stretching(to relax and elongate muscles right after your main activity(ies))
I’m a badminton athlete and yep need these explosive legs to be really warmed up prior to a tournament. (We do really do these in that order respectively.)

It’s a very Interesting subject to me this, if I’m gonna do a strength and bodybuilding style workout I’ll do two light weight warm up sets within the excercise that I’m doing
But what fascinated me is this if I do an extremely intense circuit style workout to the point where you are literally gonna drop! then I get my breath back I find that after such a grilling workout that I’m actually very fast and powerful on a punch bag
Which is strange becouse I shouldn’t have anything left in me yet it feels like the circuit even though it was very intense was a mere warm up in the realm of martial arts

Once my calf just randomly went while skipping and once my shoulder went while using a shoulder press machine (I think those are bad news) just use barbells or dumbbells instead

Warmups are important because the warmer you are,the more elastic your muscle fibres are which prevents you from tearing a muscle when doing your activity.
It would be good if you knew by exercise an average of calories burned
just do for any training day chest back or legs just do the fisrt exercise 30 times so bench 30 times squad 30 times ectra.

As a rock climber I do a few slow and controlled pull-ups, warm up my fingers by holding my body weight on the first digit of each finger (on some type of ledge), stretching everything out, and getting the blood flowing by moving around and shaking arms rapidly.
Then I climb easy, gradually getting harder and harder.

Day 40 of my lifestyle fitness changes. I finished day-35 of the Chloe Ting Summertime Shred Challenge for 2019 May. But this whole time I only did the cool down stretches at the end of the daily workout planner. I feel like I just missed a trick by not doing the warm up video, but I had just noticed this a few days ago. Also, I am 2 years late for all of these workouts. So when I start a new challenge; it will be 2 years old. I think I will do the warm up and cool down with the 8-Week 2018 Workouts.

In my experience as a long distance runner, warming up properly before a work out is vital for performance and avoiding injury. I stretch before my workout, during my workout if I get a break, and after the workout.

Seems like a copout but I appreciate how you always stress the personal component to these things.
For me cool down is even more important. If I don’t stretch post-workout I am dead the day after.
Depends on the program of my training that day (push-pull-legs) but I always start with light cardio (5-10min), just to feel that I’m getting warmer, without breaking a huge sweat.
Then I go on with: either dynamic stretches on leg days, a shoulder warmup with a wooden stick on Push days, or a cable lat pull-in on Pull days. And when lifting heavy (dead’s or squats) of course I warmup on 4-5 sets of low reps prior to my working set.
I tried a lot of different things and I find that’s what works best for me!

Try not warming up….just go right into your heaviest set with zero sets leading up to it…………….u can’t

Dynamic stretches for warmups,static stretches for cool downs
Great exercises, but for me its better to use resistance band set because its simple to use and you can gain some great muscle with them i love them so much. I will you it after this all because i can save money from gym billing every month. Get one for urself at some store or you can get it at trainhome shop (check on google if you want).
A warmup should depend on the intensity and duration of the exercise that will be done. Very intense but short exercise requires a longer session of warmup. A low intencity and long exercise requires a short warm up.
The difference in my performance when playing field hockey with or without warmup is tremendous. I can’t even understand someone would question the purpose of warming up before doing exercise. If I don’t warm up, i can’t run as fast, I’m less agile, my technique lacks precision, and I get hurt so easily.
I agree with static stretching not being done before exercisie. They should be done after.

I had a music teacher who had tendinitis, and he regularly has physiotherapy to deal with it and consults with a doctor about it. As it turns out, stretching your arms before playing or working out will be harmful, if not immediately, in the long run. It’s advised to stretch after the said exercise, or way before, as stated in the video.
I always do a short warm up especially before leg training because I always get some pain in my knees when doing squats etc. if I’m not warmed up.
When i warm up for deadlits, squats etc, i simply start with just the bar and gradually add weight until i reach my working sets
I Live in Canada and it gets hell lot of cold here so I prefer doing warm ups on treadmill for about 7-10 minutes, but not more than that as I pretty much get warmed up by this time and want to save my energy for workouts.Is that okay>?
Best warmup is to just use lighter weights. 1st set of 25% of the weights you normally use, 2nd set 50%, 3rd set 75%. For example 100kg squat is your training weight, first set is 25kg, 2nd set 50kg 3rd set 75kg and 4th set is 100kg.
Warming up is a must. I mean sure, the warmups themselves may very from individual to individual, but you have to have a warmup…

In calisthenics most of the primary exercises are very heavy on the joints and will cause injuries if you dont warm up properly.
Front levers can dislocate your shoulder, handstands can contuse your wrists and elbow tendonitis is always lurking around the corner for straight arm presses and pulls.
Warming up for weightlifting is something gymnasts have perfected. Prioritize snooth functioning shoulder and wrist joints, warm up elbows with rows and pushups.
A good guideline is that of any of your joints are clicking do not fucking lift heavy weight with it.

You always say that you “wanna get your work done quickly” and plan around working out for an hour or so. But on the other hand you use the most specific exercises and 4 warmup sets each time. How does that work, how can you hit each muscle twice a week like that?

I don’t understand. I’ve been following my AX-1 program for a long time. Mostly it’s 3 sets of 10-12 reps. So I’ve been doing for example dumbbell curls, 3 sets of 10-12 reps with 12 kg all 3 sets to failure…. Which one is the right way?? And I don’t understand all these warm up sets for each exercise, over the 5-10 minutes of warm up on a stationary bike (which I do every time I hit the gym). If I do all these warm ups, my training session will last like 3 hours, not 45 minutes.
Does anyone know how to stop my knees from cracking so damn much? It doesn’t hurt, it’s just annoying. Pls help haha

Far as im concerned there is no debate, you need to get your body hot and malleable, making it ready for any intensity & rom. Fad talk like dynamics wont change that.

I didn’t have anything to balance with, so I couldn’t do the knee rotations, but I managed everything else, which is good, because I haven’t properly warmed up in years. I used to be very, very limber, but years of just not doing anything with my body has made it much harder. The jumping cardio was actually what I found easiest.
EDIT: I do have a question though. For someone who really hasn’t exercised in years what workout would you suggest for after this? I actually felt like I was ready to do more after this, but I wasn’t super sure WHAT to do or where to start really.

I feel you. I was like that too as I was embarrassed to exercise in front of my family as I was afraid of them judging me, but when they finally discovered what I was doing, they didn’t judge me at all, in fact they encouraged me, my dad especially, he told me how proud he was of me. Now I do Chloe’s workouts in the living room in front of everyone and I don’t even care, they’re not even watching me, they have better things to do! It’s much less stressful if you don’t try to hide, and there’s so much more space so I can actually complete the exercises properly.
So basically the point is, don’t be scared or ashamed to exercise in front of your family, they shouldn’t judge you for trying to better yourself!! <3

Day 47 of my lifestyle fitness changes. Tomorrow, I will be ready to start the first day of the 8-week workout from the CT 2018 Challenge. I will have rest days on Saturday and Sunday. But the major difference is that I will be doing this warm-up before each workout. Weekdays are workout days and at the end of each workout I will also do the 10-mins Cool-down. I am excited about getting even fitter due to consistency with my workouts.

2 days ago this felt like an actual workout instead of a warmup and I was already dying before the next workout video. Now I can do the exercises consistently and only start dying around the third/fourth video. I went from hating working out to actually enjoying it in 2 days and I thought it would take me at least a month to get used to it.
This warmup feels more like a full workout to me, funny to see I’m not the only one who felt that xD

Pulse raiser which was usually running to get the heart rate up
Dynamic stretches which is stretching with movement
Sport specific activity to get you in the mindset of what activity you’re about to do.

For deadlifts and bench press I warm up with light weights. If I don’t do that then the whole thing goes FUBAR lol.
Btw I know this is unrelated but I was wondering if someone knows why this happened… yesterday I was going for a 1 rep max on deadlift and next thing you know my left knee starts to ache a little bit. It’s been 24 hours now and the pain is there… But it doesn’t get noticed unless I put pressure on it. Like if I try to sit down it’ll flair up a tiny bit or if I “take a knee” it’ll flair up a small amount as well.
Was it due to bad form or is it the fact it was because of heavy weights doing a number on my joint? I have no devices when I do deadlifts… I come as I am.
I know it’s a long shot that anyone will shed some light on this but hey it’s worth a try lol

I am doing one of Jeff’s workout programs. In the program, he has 5 different exercises, around 3-4 sets per exercise, and 60s rest between exercises.
He linked this video to suggest that we warmup in this manner (besides doing jump rope, dynamic stretching, whatever to elevate heart rate).
My question is, do we warmup up in the manner suggested in this video before each of the 5 exercises? And how much rest in between each exercise (not each set, which is 60s, each exercise)

Why are there so many warm up sets? I’ve only ever done a single warm up set. I usually get my body warm doing cardio for 5 to 10 minutes.
So I pretty much always go by bike to the gym, 10 min drive, is that enough or not?
All this time I’ve been making this mistake. I’ve been warming up way too much which has been killing my working sets. I used the percentages shown in this video for the past 2 weeks or so, and my work sets and reps have improved!! Thanks Jeff! When are you gonna run for President?

The warm up is a function of the exercise intensity. PERIOD, This is not rocket science.

So 4 sets to warm up and then 3 sets for the exercise itself which makes 7 sets! And we should do that for all exercises? Well better bring a blanket with you cuz that’s gonna be a long night.

Typically a light row up to 1000m, but gradually increasing stroke rate per minute. Then a short circuit of KB Squats involving placing elbows on the thighs to stretch the groin then a bicep curl, hip thrusters and finally KB around the world’s. Each for 5 reps for 3 rounds.
Now you are ready to your work out?! I thought it was work out!
i warm up on a rowing machine Concept 2 for 10 min on low weight. or do some kick boxing for 10min. whats your opinion on that?

—10-MIN WARM UP FOR HIIT WORKOUTS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6q8F06kpyw In this one, we’ll start with some Pilates-inspired, gentle mobility work, then go into cardio (jumping is optional), and finish with a little more mobility. I recommend this one if your body doesn’t love starting out with the light cardio.
—7-MIN GENTLE WARM UP (NO JUMPING): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNJfhtfTJKY Very similar to this 5-min warm up, but the pace is slowed down and it’s all low-impact (no jumping during the cardio). If you found this 5-min warm up to be a bit too intense or fast-paced, I recommend this alternate.

It’s not too different to how I work myself. I’ll with some exercises on heavy days work up in a pyramid to my heaviest set I can perform only 6 reps with which will be my first working set and then drop the weight and go all out to failure for three sets of 8-10 reps of which Ill count the whole excercise as 4 working reps (I do not count the warm up sets)
I used to not warm up before working out but then things started cracking and breaking and pulling all over my body so I kinda had to start. Felt like Mr. Glass. I literally have to crack my knees into place before doing any lower body workouts. After that, I do body/lightweight full body mini-workout for a warm up before my main workout. Gets my blood going as well which is also super important for me. Takes about 15 mins. And even after that my first set of every compound movement is a warmup set.
I’m sure that’s a great warm-up and I love Jeff’s advice but four warm up sets is a lot..

Depends on your age. As an older fellow I find that my joints need an extensive and gradual warmup before taking a few minutes break and then finally going heavy.

Blogilates always have special place in my heart
Pro-tip: if you wake up cold and your heater is still heating up your house and wanna get warm quickly, this is fabulous for that and the stretches feel amazing

Ah Jeff so this warmup would be as followed 25lbs dumbells for 20 to 25 Reps the second set 5 to 10 Reps less third set how many Reps am I suppose to do with 65lbs dumbells fourth set go up to a 100lbs dumbells for 3 to 4 Reps fifth set 85lbs pounders for 10 Reps right.
I do the max weight I can do five sets of five with such a small increase in weight I have never “warmed up” before starting. Does one warm up in the real world before lifting something? I doubt it.

I find that you’re switching the exercises a bit too fast but it’s fine
I’m starting the intense core challenge today. I’ve started a lot of Chloe’s workouts but I never finish and tell myself that I’ll start tommorow and eat a bunch of junk food and then of course I never do the workout. I’ve gained 9 pounds since quarantine started. I now weigh 168 pounds. I was 159. I’m gonna get through this work out and try to update everyday on my progress. Wish me luck!!
To me Yeah It’s important depending on the workout, some times when i don’t warm up i get light muscle tightness and i think It’s good to make the blood flow little faster before starting to do heavy workout
I never do warm ups I find it a waste of fucking time and energy I go right into chloe ting 2 week shred challenge

This is honestly the best warm up I’ve come across, perfect mix of dynamic stretching and warming up the body. I put this on every time before working out, so thank you
i love the workouts that ur doing i’m doing your four week program and i started it yesterday and my stomach and legs are so sore
I lost the ability to do a handstand. Whenever I try now, I cant even get my legs to launch up, less maintain the position.

You can tell I’m not in great shape since the warmup already has me going too much.. Working on it in the lockdown though:D
I do active stretches at a big box gym where I do high kicks, high knees, butt kicks and external rotations. I look crazy to some people but this psychologically gets me psyched up. If I am OK with looking dumb during my warm up then I shouldn’t GAF what people think when I lift. Results are what matter.
