Sorry, it’s totally wrong! I think nor cold and warm is good! Warm water makes you sweat faster, while cold water is seriously harmful for health. It is recommended to take normal temperated water for both drinking & taking bath!!! Also drink enough amount of water during the day that helps a lot during workout as well as avoid some health issues….

You’re wrong. Changing from one body temperature to another that fast (drinking cold water when body is warm) is seriously dangerous for your body (causes fevers mostly and could even be worse)…. When exercising you should drink room temp water and let your body cool down slowly by itself at the same room temp by resting and over time it will cool, but you cant go drinking ice cold water right after a steamy exercise could be really harmful!!!!
Does that mean you should drink warm water or cold water when you’re eating a burger and fries? With cold water the grease from the fries the burgers will coagulate and with warm water it’ll pass through your system more readily I would think. Love to hear your comments on this. So I could get a vat of frigid water with a temperature sensor in it, set up some kind of chilling apparatus, and then submerge myself in the water. As my body heat warms the water, the chilling device would cool the water to maintain the original frigid temp. I could calculate calories burned by the amount of energy needed to keep the temp the same?

I’ve read that cold water helps the fat to solidify making it more difficult to burn and if you drink it everyday all day then that makes it even more difficult to burn fat. I find this to be true because I have drank ice cold water everyday, all day for the past 20 years and i am also always thirsty and I found that is because drinking so much water has depleted my electrolytes and then I drink more water because of the thirst. Always it’s this viscous cycle but I stopped drinking cold water 6 days ago and I started drinking warm herbal tea instead. Not only have I dropped inches off my waist but I’ve lost 5 lbs and what really makes me happy is I’m not THIRSTY!!! I’ve been thirsty for over 20 years and all the sudden I’m not. Its unreal!

It would be more that 37 kcal because the chemical to thermal energy efficiency of the human body is not 100%, in fact no machine/organism is for that matter (my fellow engineers can vouch for me on that one) thus to produce 37kcal of energy you will have to expend even more energy in the process. So for example if you assume a 30% chemical to thermal biological efficiency then 37kcal/0.3=123kcal burned to produce the 37kcal needed to heat the liter of liquid water at 0°C to 37°C.
What the actual efficiency of the human body is I’ll leave to all of the university of wiki/youtube engineers out there at starbucks drinking their lattes and wearing skinny jeans.

Note the authors of this presentation merely conduct a thought experiment (a mind f*k, in this example), with pretty important but completely unstated assumptions:
a) human physiological processes must be neglected
b) assume there are special “cells” dedicated to heating ingested water to 37C, and select that as your system.
Ick. That’s pretty meaningless!
Note, this topic could be addressed in a scientific manner, and it has likely been discussed in literature and presented in text, so why not at least conduct a literature review and include that in the presentation?
Further, regarding the mission of WeDKnowS: BS reduction would be nice, and pseudo-science presentation style could start leaning back toward scientific investigation. According to your base of calculations, the body should have to produce 37000 calories (37 kcal) to warm up 1 litre of ice water (liquid water at 0ºC). (In this context, 1 kelvin = 1 celsius).
It’s not healthy drinking ice water since it hurts the stomach. It’s more convenient and one can burn even more calories drinking let’s say 2 litres (=2000 grams) of water at 15ºC per day (37-15=22ºC; 22×2000 grams= 44000 calories= 44 kcal).

They have their math right. Q=mCdT. If Q is in Joules and m=1kg, and the specific heat of liquid water is 4.187kJ/kgK, and delta T due to human body temperature is 37K and the water is initially at 273.15K, Q=154.919kJoules; where 1J=0.239005736calories, Q=37kcalories.

You mean 1 calorie will raise the temperature of 1 milliliter of water 1 degree Celsius. That is milliliter; 1000 ml = 1 L. So your entire video is off by a factor of 1000. I will pump iron and sit down and drink all the ice water I can. I have to go pee all day long and that is additional exercise. Pumping iron heats your body up you get short of breath quickly when you lift weights and you need to cool your body off. Ice water will help remove that heat and make your body able to pump more iron. Thing is you don’t count your reps you just do what you can till you feel the burn. When you feel that burn stop you are done.
When you are able to lift again you do. Now if you never lifted weights before you may sieze up you will barely be able to move your arms. I had this happen when I first started. When was this? Around age 15. I went with a friend to the gym with him and he said he was just doing his warm up and I tagged along doing as he did and I had this problem.
He was a fake friend he was making fun of me because of my disability and I should have seen him for what he was then and left him alone but no I did like most people do and stuck with the friendship. He ended it when I was most venerable that is after he used my information to steal from me yes in the 1980s I was a victim of identity theft.
Back then I may have weighed 145 lbs or less. I am 6 ft tall. I was that thin until I quit smoking and took up weight lifting for real. Age 19 I went from 145 lbs to 185 in 6 weeks time. I took a job in construction and gave my employer every calorie I had to give I thrived on hard labor. I was to 220 lbs in no time. I found my ideal weight around 250 lbs. Sadly I am now 350 lbs after a tornado broke my back but I am just getting back into weights. I can only do exercise that does not hurt my back, I will probably not be balanced but so be it I need to burn this fat weights is the best way so I will do weights as much as I can I know I will be injured and will have to recoup but that is called life.
If you are healthy all I can say is stay healthy best thing to do is simply walk min 20 min straight if you want to walk here and there do 20 min blocks as many as you like I find I start to warm up around 8 min that is when my heart rate goes up. That elevated heart rate is called cardio you are in that range it is when you are burning the most and walking is way less impact than running. Get some walking poles to walk with for a number of reasons. You can attach lights to the poles and if you walk where there are cars they can see you. If dogs come to attack you can hold them off with the stick until you get out your spray and render them crying babies. The poles help you to keep from falling and you also work your upper body do this take a picture of yourself before and after walking with poles and you will see the difference.

If humans are warm blooded, then why is there a problem with drinking cold water? Acknowledge God in all of your ways and let him direct your path. I am American and there are many Americans who don’t even consume pure water. Starbucks and soft drinks are the main source of water intake for most, so “splitting hairs” over whether to consume warm or cold water is irrelevant. I am sure that your body would welcome either form of pure water consumption.

I drink water before and after the workout but I also keep a glass right beside my workout space. If I get parched during the workout, I grab a swallow during one of the walking or transition parts if I can. I hit pause only if absolutely necessary because I don’t want to risk not coming back!

This a no brainer, cold water. The whole point you’re body needs water is to cool it self down (in physical activities). You’re core body temperature is a major player in the pace at which important physical and psychological systems start to break down. This is why Nike wanted to try to break the 2 hour marathon in I think 50 degree weather (akathe perfect temperature to delay environmental stimulus to the muscles).

Shower with water slightly lower than room temperature in summers, 10 degrees higher than room temperature in winters (Where I live, winter temperatures rarely go under 15 degrees celsius, hence I cannot speak for really cold places). I keep a personal water bottle with me at all times but especially during workouts. I drink before, during (at transitions) and after all workouts. I just recently started using Fiz in my water to see if that will help with hydration, nutrition and recover. Love Peanut. Our three love watching us workout. They are MUCH larger but just as interested in exercise as Peanut. 😉

Drinking ice cold water is not a weight loss program in itself, but it definitely contributes to a weight loss program and should be incorporated into one, since 75 calories may not be that much per day, but per week that equals to 525 extra calories effortlessly burned, or almost an extra 60 grams of fat (equivalent to about a palm full of fat) effortlessly burned per week. And after one month that all adds up to a quarter kg of fat effortlessly burned. If you are very overweight a quarter kg of fat lost from your body is outwardly not noticeable. However if you are slightly overweight it is noticeable. So one cannot say that it does not contribute to a weight loss program.
They should have also mentioned that freezing your ass off in cold weather, is an excellent (albeit uncomfortable and flu-risking) way of burning additional calories. This is because as mentioned in the video, the body has to keep its core temperature at a constant 37C. So in order to do this when you are freezing, the body has to hike up its metabolism in order to burn extra calories in order to create extra heat in order to maintain its core temperature of 37C (phew, that’s a mouthful).
That is why I have read that Arctic and Antarctic explorers and adventurers reportedly burn 10,000 calories per day. The Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps claims that he eats a 10,000 calorie diet when in training. This would then mean that long duration training in the pool boosts his daily calorie requirements to 10,000 calories. Its likely that he burns that amount of calories when in training (much more than a marathon runner) due to the fact that water is an excellent conductor of heat (much more than air) and therefore the metabolism of a long duration swimmer has to constantly work overtime to maintain the core body temperature of 37C, since the water surrounding his body draws out the body’s heat much more effectively than air. If he was not burning 10,000 calories per day during training then there is no way that he would not gain weight from eating 10,000 calories per day, since you gain weight when you simply eat more calories than you burn per day.
And this would explain why you always feel so damn hungry after a good swim in the pool.

Having said that, it is something I often wondered about, but always considered as going too far to find that extra tiny bit of performance enhancement.

I think during workouts a lil bit cold water is ok but not too cold and when not working out then warm water is better for losing weight,,better digestion and for skin as it detoxifies and flushes out toxins and bacteria from the body hence results in clearer and healthy skin based on researches speacially in the morning other times normal or a lil bit cold water is better so that you can drink more and it also depends a lot on the weather,mood,situation and habit…as I have developed a habit of drinking normal or warm water and it quenches my thirst very well..and exceptions are always there for instance you may not go for a warm water after a hardcore workout or sex ;p
