Dear Dr. Greger and the folks at NutritionFacts.org
Thank you for your amazing work. You’ve turned me vegan within 2 weeks of watching your videos. I’m indebted to you.
My question for you is very specific to a small group of people with minor allergic reactions to certain food types. To take my own example, I’m allergic to all legumes (except peanuts), but only slightly allergic to some beans. Since I’m assuming I need to eat some legumes, I try to eat some of the latte. The reactions to these can be summarized as a bearable tingling itch. While I’m fine with the temporary inflammation, my question is whether for the sake of avoiding chronic illnesses, am I better off:
1. avoiding legumes completely in this case, where can I substitute my sources of IP-5, phytates, polyphenols and the flavanoids I’m losing out on?
2. continue consuming them occasionally as the minor allergic reactions have no long lasting impact and the benefits outweigh the temporary reactions
Thank you.
what if i juice green beans? will the extracted juice work as well, or do i need to eat the whole thing?
Why are the serving sizes of hummus and bean dip smaller but refried beans are still 1/2c? Because of the added oil? I’m trying to figure out how to calculate sizes for dip without added oil
If my cholesterol is still above 150 (176 last checked) would it be suggested to eat less nuts and seeds? Or to focus more on beans and what not? I don’t have any other fats in my diet. I know coconut oil is bad and yes on occasion i have it as a raw chocolate treat thing. Is that what could be doing this or just trying to get past my crappy diet and lifestyle probably just takes a while? Because this was done in a matter of 12 months and it’s only been like 9 months… Hmmm?
how is it oil free when tahini is made of sesame seeds + oil
So….. I have to cook my dried soaked beans in the soaking water?? Otherwise you’d throw away the phytic acid?
Strain can of chickpeas keep the aquafaba,
In blender add chickpeas,
half a cup of the aquafaba,
3 tbsps tahini,
3 garlic cloves,
Juice of 1 lemon,
1/4 tsp Sea salt,
1/4 tsp paprika,
1/4 tsp cumin,
1/2 tsp chilli flakes,
Blend thoroughly,
Store up to a week covered in the fridge.
Serve on avocado toast, with veg and pitta bread, on top of red lentil chilli.
This is GOOD. I mean it’s so good. Never really been a fan of oil free hummus, just tasted so bland. Using the 1 can of chickpeas surprisingly makes soooo much hummus. About 30 tablespoons if i measured correct. I added a little more lemon juice because i like my hummus very lemony. And i can eat it guilt free since it’s sooo low fat. The good hummus at the store has like 8g of fat per TBSP this will become a staple
AWESOME recipe! I have been wanting to try making my own oil free hummus! Thanks for sharing!:)
You may also like my favorite hummus recipe, after chickpeas, tahini and lemon, just add 1 avocado and 3 tablespoons pickled Jalapenos. So so good.
Just made this and you’re right, it’s SO GOOD!!! Better than store bought!
what about people who eat paleo diet for years without grains and legumes and with animal products (that dr greger is also against) and report a great health?
I am kind of confused I have been watching a lot of your videos and lectures and in one you said that omega6s were bad, but I thought that hummus was high in omega6. Can I eat a lot a little or no amount of hummus. Thank you for your time
1:32 for her recipe:
1 can garbanzo (15 oz 425 g) strained
1/2 cup of aqua fava from the can
3 tbsp tahini
3 whole cloves garlic
Juice of 1 lemon
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp cumin
1/2 tbsp chili peppers
Blend
Does anyone know of a store bought brand that makes oil free hummus?
I have a Ninja blender and food processor. I did a hummus face-off tonight. Blender won! I let it run 2 minutes, then scraped sides and ran another full minute. Very smooth and creamy hummus. Food processor didn’t get it that smooth even with additional time on the clock!
Dr Greger,i’ve just had blood tests done and all ok except my triglycerides are 183 and HDL 41,vegan for 3 years, excellent blood pressure, not overweight, active, don’t smoke or drink.Any idea why this would happen?Tx
OMG just made your Hummus and you are correct it is the best I’ve tasted and trust me I’ve tasted them all. Pita, veggies and hummus for lunch.
Just made this recipe and used sea salt. It is absolutely the best hummus I’ve ever made. Thank you so much for this! The cumin and paprika are perfect complimentary flavors.
Beans, beans, that important, necessary food dumbasses won’t eat because of the myth it’ll always make you gassy. It does not make you gassy when you’re used to it, unless maybe if you’re sick. (-_-) The same rejects drink lots of gassy soda, go figure.
Just wanted to say thanks. I made the hummus today and I can confirm: it is the most delicious ever!!!
Love chickpeas, and lentils, and young peas!
By the way, you can make a kind of hummus, blending a bit sprouted or well soaked chickpeas with a marrow. Personally I don’t add any oil, just spices and all that stuff.
Yassssss Queen, this is a fabulous recipe so yummy, thanks!!!
Yeah, a little confused. So the subjects started with a very low-fat diet, amped up their fat intake, then switched the grains out for legumes? Am I missing something?

You just inspired me to make homemade hummus again!! I was cheating for a few years now.
Does this video really show the amazing affect that legumes has on cholesterol levels or that by eating legumes and not high amounts of fat your cholesterol will drop… hm
מצחיק לראות שהחומוס משוטט בעולם החיצון מחוץ למזרח התיכון:)….shalom
This is indeed the BEST oil free hummus in the world. Maybe best hummus of any oil free or otherwise. LOVE this stuff! All the others I tried to make just didn’t come up to par, but THIS is amazing!
Dear Dr. Greger, I really enjoy your videos. Thank you very much for your continuous effort!:]
Greetings from Berlin!!
pianobärchen
Hummus is so good. It has great source of benefits for my health systems.
LOVE beans. This is great because they are actually my favorite food. eating a bowl of crock pot cooked beans is better than ice cream to me. since im vegan, my ice cream is hummus especially black bean hummus. yummy in this tummy of gas. LOL
I bought some today and it was garlic flavored and I already ate it all
Cool, I’m gonna try this but I’ll add the chickpeas last until the desired consistency is reached.
Love hummus. I work with a girl from Sudan and she recommends soaking dry chickpeas overnight, then boiling them to soften before blending with tahini and olive oil. She says NEVER use canned chickpeas
Just made this today. I was trying to make it from memory and not get out my computer so of course, I forgot something. I forgot the garlic!!! I just got on here and saw what I did wrong. So I’ll go back and fix that but I just wanted to tell you that this hummus had the best texture of any hummus I’ve made. The aquafaba and blending it for so long did the trick. It wasn’t even that bad without the garlic, (but yeah, it needs the garlic.) Ok, going back to fix it and thank you for this recipe!
Bravo!!! Perfect i just did it thank u so much 4 ur creativity
I’m addicted to hummas I just can’t stop Plz send HELP!!!!
Please tell me about your water system. I want to buy one, because I’m so confused. Basically, the brand, and do you like it. Thanks so much!
How to make your own hummus:
Get about 3-5 cans of garbanzo beans
Rinse them out with water
Dump into food processor
Mash up garlic and salt with a little bit of water in a bowl
Dump into food processor
Add about a cup or more of water, depending on how thick you want it
Blend for approximately 30 seconds
Add about a quarter or third cup of tahini
Blend another 30 seconds
Add a little bit of lemon juice
Blend another 30 seconds
(Optional) add chopped bell peppers and hot sauce (for spicy hummus), blend
Voila. You just made a tub of hummus for less than $3 compared to the tiny store bought bowls that cost much more and have unnecessary preservatives.
So are the hummas in the yias yias salad at pdq organic n healthy.cant find information on them
Thanks for the recipe unfortunately I found 3 garlic cloves to be WAY too much really overwhelming. Would go with one clove next time (and maybe microwave it 1st to mellow the flavor)
I just made this. I was skeptical because the lack of oil, but It’s amazing!
instantly checked the sodium of my Hummus
Cedar’s Artichoke and Spinach is my favorite at just 104mg per 2tbsp (4%dv) of sodium.
Although, using Bacon Ritz crackers instead of Pita bread isn’t doing justice. Lol. For Pita users, choose wheat. It’s better for you than bleached dough garbage.
I dont mean to be disrespectful but how is this hummus oil free? when u added tahini which has oil in it
what was the sauce you drizzled on over the red lentil chili (from the bottle?)
Spent half the time advertising your ebook then didn’t even use fresh beans. Wtf
Your journey and mine are very similar, except I am much older than you. I did 100% raw for a few years, and never felt better in my life. But I found that so much of my time was taken up with food prep, and it was expensive also. I am glad that I did it, because I never went whole hog back into bad eating habits ever since then. Now I am Vegan, and try to stay oil free except for what is in seeds or avocadoes etc. Coconut oil is also out for me. I have over 130 pounds left to lose (I’ve lost 45 lbs so far) I’m losing 6-7 lbs per month. You give me hope that I won’t be left with unsightly loose skin. Keep up your good work. You are such an inspiration for those who are serious about making life changes for the better.
Beans Beans are good for the heart,as the more you eat the more you fart, the more you fart the better you will feel so eat beans every day
Bomb daddy hummus recipe of ALL TIME!! With or without oil. With a recipe like this you’ll never need oil again. Eating this over a big bowl of jasmine rice and red lentil chili. (Don’t forget the hot sauce) I can’t thank you enough Hannah. You are my rock! <3
Oh my this was delicious!! Will make all the time!! Hummus tacos for dinner tonight
This is the BEST hummus!! So, so good. I don’t miss the oil and it’s so creamy/fluffy!! LOVE!
Uh… is there a non-vegan hummus? Don’t think u had to state that the hummus is vegan.
When I made it in my vitamix. My blender went nuts and over heated. Granted I did like a double batch (still came out unreal). Just wondering how I could fix that. Did I not add enough liquid you think?
I mean.. I got the consistency right but it tasted pretty much only Lemon, maybe my Lemon was bigger:P
Beans, hummus, all good. Just one tip: make you own. You can zap it ready in a small food processor in minutes, controlling the ingredients. Avoid commercial hummus, because most have too much fat, and its from unhealthy cheap GMO, highly processed soy or canola oil.
How can I replace the tahini, or can just avoid it and it will taste the same? TIA!:)
Hummus on pasta! Thin the sauce just a smidge and add to pasta of choice.
….the more you eat the more you fart. The more you fart the better you feel, so eat your beans with every meal
(had to do it). I love beans, I eat them everyday!:) I make a batch of hummus every weeks (using no oil and adding turmericI have a recipe on my channel). I eat some hummus every day, dipping in bell peppers, zucchini, carrots, etc. I also eat beans or lentils in my meals daily as well. I am definitely a legume person, all the way!
*Eat your G-BOMBS:)
Can’t wait to try this. You are crushing it with these recipe video’s. Thanks for the effort.
Love using hummus as a base for creamy salad dressing. Just add the brine from capers, plus some additional lemon juice, and you have a vegan cesar dressing…..delicious! ps: I put hummus on almost everything!
hummus I buy uses canola oil instead of olive oil.:( cheap, cheap, cheap. At least it’s non-GMO certified. Sad that we need a certification now just to tell us we’re eating real food. xD
IT TOOK 1:32 LONG TO GET STARTED WITH THE RECIPE.
hummus is great, I can’t wait to go to Israel and get some…
Thank you so much for posting this! We’ve failed repeatedly to find/make an oil free hummus we like. THIS IS IT! Love it! EAsy to make, few ingredients and tastes absolutely amazing.
I love all of your recipes from all books. The Sweet Mustard Dressing blew my mind. There is ONE thing I wish you would add, and that is how many servings per recipe. Going to make this one tonight!
my love for hummus is dangerous XD It’s my version of Nutella xD
i made this tonight and can i just say….using aquafaba in place of oil is actually genius. it turned out so good? i’m still in shock at the amazing consistency. thank you sm never going back to store bought hummus again
I thought tahini was oily….if it’s made w/sesame seeds, it would have to be.
Forgive my ignorance but why did you omit the olive oil? Is it healthier without it? Can I make this without tahini?
Um not english girl, what dish u have used with hummus it was looking like red chilli rice
I just threw this together and it was AWESOME and so easy! Never going back to buying this if I’m home, I’m making it!
Yessss… I’m so excited, I’ve been eating 95% WFPB for 2 years now. Till 2 weeks ago my bloodpressure was 80/140. Since 2 weeks I’ve been increasing the amount of beans in my diet and especially chickpeas (homemade hummus is my innocent pleasure). I eat about 300 grams a day of different beans (besides hummus I trow in about 100 grams of kidneys or brown beans in my salads and mexican dishes). I don’t eat other peas and lentils, I”m not fond of them. And now this morning I went to my family doctor again and my bp is 70/115. Yeahyeahyeah. My personal evidence!!! Thank you doctor Greger. Your one of my great inspirators.
Best i have had so far. I usually dont like hummus. Was really really good!
Hannah, I just made this and it is literally the most gorgeous, gorgeous hummus I’ve had in a long time…thank you so much for all your recipes they have aided my weight loss over a six month period tremendously I’m very grateful for your videos!
Doesn’t tahini have oil? Or is there oil-free tahini? Thanks!!
Thank you just became vegan this week so will have a go at making my own
BEST HUMMUS EVEEEEEEER!!!!
Than you so much for the recepie. The texture is just waoooowww!!!!
Thanks so much for ALL you do. Your recipes help me out so much. What about the oils in the Tahini?

I’m in the process of becoming Vegan (I had fried eggs today first time in a week it was disgusting) I ate lentil ragu so glad to hear this.
you never really talked about the anti nutritions in planet foods, what i am getting from all your videos is this: be vegan and never eat any animal products even boild eggs, fuck you
Nice Video! Excuse me for butting in, I am interested in your opinion. Have you researched Tabblarny Belly Principle (search on google)? It is a smashing one off guide for discovering a 2 minute trick to lose 1 pound of belly fat every 72 hours minus the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my m8 at very last got great success with it.
right, i completely messed up my shopping and I’m dying for this hummus. Is there anything I can use instead of lemon? Is the lemon absolutely necessary? so excited
I love beans, peas and lentils. But as they are high protein foods how much is too much? I could eat kilos of them but wouldn’t that be dangerous because of protein overload?
too much of anything is bad for u… but tahinni sauce is good in hummos but im not sure if its healthy or not
Is it good to mix different types of beans together or better to just eat one type at a time?
Another way to get creamy hummus is to boil your canned chickpeas before you blend them.
I know I’m late but I finally got myself to make this hummus and I’m in love
You have changed my hummus life foreverrrr!! I use to get the eggplant hummus from TJ’s too but I think this one is alot better and cost effective! Btw, I have been vegan for 6 years (vegetarian for 18 years) but I have been eating pretty much only your recipes for the past 2 months and I have lost 10 pounds! Also the food I am making is SO much more beautiful and tasty than it ever has been. Thanks so much for gracing us with your presence, Hannah!
Try blending the lemon juice and tahini before adding the beans and rest of the ingredients: super creamy!!
Dear Dr Greger. I heard you mention that you don’t soak your beans but instead cook them in a pressure cooker. How long do you cook them for and more importantly does one need to change the water at any point between boiling the beans and eating them?
I’m super picky about my hummus, and this was fantastic! Will be making it regularly! Thank you!
Instead of running to drug dealers (doctors), people need to learn what to eat. Parents need to start doing their job properly.
I don’t think I like hummas it looks horrible eggs and bacon are much better for your bones can you do video on why eat rabbits and can you make a rabbit and egg recipe that would be very sexy thank you Mr Mike and do a video about why having a dog is healthy and is it safe for dogs to eat eggs dogs and eggs rule live life 420 and peace to everyone
hummus hmmmmmm i love it I didn’t now it was so beneficial mike cool live life 365 that’s what its all about
This was so amazing! Thank you Hannah! Sending love from Northern AZ!
I have been draining the oil off my tahini to remove as much oil as possible from my hummus.
Pretty sure most tahini have added oil. I’ve yet to find one that doesn’t.
Sounds good but beans are a pain to cook, they take so long and forget can beans. Any tips?
Cant wait to start trying out all your sauces next week after grocery shopping!
