You do need hand strength to hold the ball, particularly if you’re doing one-handed exercises, so you might try a lighter weight at first (3 to 5 pounds) and increase the weight gradually. Weights With Handles: Another option is using a weight with handles, such as smartbells, which are oval weights with two grips. The handles are wider and you can grip the weight on either side, allowing you.Start with a pair of light dumbbell hand weights (2 to 3 pounds for women and 5 to 8 pounds for men). If you can’t do 12 repetitions (or reps, the number of times you do the exercise) the weight is too heavy.
If your muscles don’t feel tired after 12 reps, it’s too light. The neoprene will absorb some of the pressure the weights expose your hands to. As the Arthritis Foundation points out, resistance bands are a good strength training option for people with arthritis.
If the bands don’t already have loops at the end, tie them into one, so you don’t have to grasp the ends of the bands.Stand straight, with your feet about shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent. Grasp a dumbbell in one hand, with your palm facing in front of you.
Keeping your elbow close to your side, slowly curl the weight up toward your shoulder by bending your elbow. Slowly lower the weight to the starting position.NewGrip Gloves Eliminate Arthritic and Tendon pain from lifting by: Cushioning hands with 1/4″ neoprene Supporting/stabilizing wrists with a 2″ thick wrist support wrap Fully custom fit, so you can adjust the pad to the part of your hand where you need the most coverage.Use machines and resistance bands rather than dumbbells. When working your arms and upper body, lift 5% to 10% of your body weight.
Lift 25% of your body weight when exercising your leg muscles.Don’t let RA define your life – YOU be the LEAD.,” became her mantra and from there, Dani’s new journey of weight lifting with arthritis began. As Dani continued down her journey to reclaim her athleticism she grew into the strong and resilient woman that she is today.Gripping barbells and dumbbells causes an isometric, or nonmoving, contracting of the muscles in your forearm and hand to keep the weights in your hands. This type of contraction can cause hand cramping while lifting weights and block regular blood flow into and out of the hand, which increases the blood pressure in the hand.
Bicep curls with light dumbbells are great for arthritis sufferers because this exercise engages the arms, wrists, and fingers. 7 This lift can also be done underwater with foam dumbbells. Straight leg lifts strengthen the quadriceps, and hamstring curls work the back sides of the legs to.
Before grabbing your weights, always warm up your muscles with a good stretch. Resnick recommends slowly stretching a joint until it feels a little uncomfortable. Hold the stretch for 10 to 30 seconds and repeat three to five times.
Start with a weight that allows you to do three sets of eight to 10 repetitions with moderate effort.Hold a one hand weight with both of hands so that your arms extended above your head. You should try to keep your arms as extended as possible. Raise the hand weight straight up into the air. The top of one end of the hand weight should be facing the ceiling.
Hold the weight in.Lift weights with slow, smooth movements, and do not lock your joints at the end of the movements. Exhale during the part of each movement that expends the most energy.
Work muscle groups that support the joints where you have osteoarthritis. Work opposing muscle groups to balance their abilities. My issue isn’t that I can’t lift the heavy weights but my hands end up in a lot of pain from holding on to 20+ pounds. I’m trying to not over grip the weights and I know I could go heavier, but I just can’t seem to be able to hold on to the heavy weights.
I’ve tried wearing gloves and they don’t seem to.Discuss your specific conditions and goals with your doctor so they can make any necessary recommendations. Hi. My wrist is already really swollen. Is it okay to do the first exercise u showed?
This is my story! I quit lifting due to the depression and gained at least 20 lbs and lost all gains. I miss my gym peeps I went from lifting heavy to not being able to lift a coffee pot. I don’t know where to start again…but this video has inspired me to STOP feeling sorry for myself and get moving. Hang in there girl!

Hi doctor, I want Exercising With Rheumatoid Arthritis to lose weight, can you help me? Thanks.
Learn to deal with the pain…. I never heard anyone else say it.
People see me up and moving and their like “ohhh you must be better”
And my reply ” No, I’ve learn to deal with the pain”
I’ve got my fire back and am working out again… now looking how to tone up and use some weights but considering my wrists issues I need to do some research.
Glad your taking control.
Doc jo i feel to much pain on my life elbow down to my hands
It is difficult to accept when your body isn’t working. The pain is excruciating.
Not sure if I have arthritis in my hands but I’m going to try this. I work with my hands all day at work and they are sore all the time. Hopefully this works for me. Thank you for the advice.
Exercise is good. Try to cut out sugar, carbs and dairy. Should reduce inflammation in the body. I had arthritis for years. Eat a lot of minerals.
Anyone know what it means when wrists or thumb joints have a painful burning sensation?
I agree, I dont blame her for getting angry and upset that your delt this shitty life card taht you body work wont properly and its our of your control. The human body is so complex but shit at the same time.
I was diagnosed with RA at 16 after having progressively worse pain in my hip for several months after a wrestling season and eventually by summer I couldn’t walk and went to a doctor and was given pain meds and steroids. By November the week before my next wrestling season I was diagnosed. Althea doctor told me I shouldn’t wrestle and should seek physical therapy and look to next year、 welp that didn’t work. For me the fact I was told I couldn’t made me go out and yes I had a lot of pain and was on a lot of meds but I was able to turn my season to a 6-9 and lose the 30lbs I had gained while essentially housebound. Now at 25 the biggest issues I have are periferal with it mostly affecting my eyes. Vut I still compete now in powerlifting and strongman and though there are days it hurts I push because I won’t let the pain win.
Thank you belle Dr.Jo u are great n super shape body✌have a great day
Hai mam my mom having full body pain due to inflammation in joints recently she is facing sever pain in foot is there any exercise to relieve that pain.. Please rly
Thanks ;D as a programmer, I’m at the computer 5 to 10 hours per day typing like a madman.
Mam with this exercise we can reduce finger fat please give me reply
I had it for years… Then I went zero carb keto two years ago and it disappeared along with every other health issue.
Give it a go!
Jo, I love your videos! You have the best face expressions and also awesome exercises.:)
Interesting that for my chondromalacia(mild knee arthritis), I do a very effective isometric I learned online. Was more effective than getting a cortisone shot. Also bicycling on a stationary bike improved it. This demonstrates clearly the benefits of Jane’s exercises for hand/thumb arthritis which I have to a minor degree.
Sorry I don’t wanna start with saying something negative.. but I am crying right now. My mom has osteoarthritis.. and I know how much pain she goes through.. I don’t wan to suffer from the same.. but my knee pains alot. I took meds but still nothing works.. I keep crying.. but I don’t know what to do. Please help.
Thank you, Dr. Jo. Those are simple, effective exercises. Does playing a musical instrument help keep joints on your hands free of bone spurs? Does knitting? Cheers.
I love it. I was pretty strong before the lockdown but lack of heavier weights has really taken a toll on my upper body strength and arthritic shoulder. Thank you so much!!
Hey man I just found this channel and I want to start getting in shape. Got diagnosed with ra 4 years ago. Can you do a video if your elbows flare up, this video will help when my wists get flared up thanks and keep up the videos
When i was 12…then my arthritis started now I’m 19. Now my hands are stiff so, what should i do??? Plz suggest me…
Wow thank you! Im self treating right now as my wife is not working during this COVID scare and we dont currently have healthcare. I only have one hand so its super bad for me, this legit helped after 4 days of not being able to type for work or even open a door knob. I still have a lot of pressure and stiffness under my thumb, any exercises for that? THANKS AGAIN!
That first exercise with the isometrics is along the lines of what I learned for mild knee arthritis, chondromalacia. Has worked out quite well, certainly when a cortisone shot failed and I’ve added using a stationary bike workout at the local Y.
Mikhaila Peterson cured her Rheumatoid arthritis with a carnivore diet, she should give it a try. https://mikhailapeterson.com/ there is also a Joe Rogan interview
Hi. Great video. Its one thing to explain something and yet another to explain and demonstrate it well. Also while demonstrating to point out what not to do. Your video does a superb job. I do have a question if I may. Im 58 and in decent shape having made a decision in 2012 to loose wight and eat well.( lost 58 lbs). I have an arthritic shoulder however. My wife and I going are thinking about starting yoga. I was wondering if you think yoga can be done successfully at home (if care is taken) without going to a formal class? Are there any books or other resources you could recommend? Thanks. Keith and Kathy L.
Hi! Im a boxer who just got diagnosed arthritis on my right shoulder. It is very difficult for me to throw the right hook. But I will start with this from now on daily basis, I will do a five minutes session plus cold water shower and acupuncture. I pray to God it helps because I love boxing. I know arthritis is for life but if I can use my shoulder just 40 or 50 % better Im happy.

Hi doctor jo i really appreciate your time and advice. Is there any tip in us determining whether the hand numbness/ weakness is associated with carpal tunnel or arthritis? I know the two are so similar it’s hard to know. Thank you so much for these videos. I have been struggling with numbness for about a year almost. Do you also recommend vitamins?

Thank you, just recently got hand arthritis at 31 years old. Like is full of surprises. I will do these like you said & hope I get some comfort.
Hey so I think I might have rheumatoid arthritis. To anyone who has it: Do you get tingling in your hands, fingers, and elbow from it? I wore a wrist brace for many weeks trying to get rid of carpal tunnel, and then dequervains, and cubital tunnel. Nothing I’ve done has helped me and although I’m finally gonna have an appointment to see what I might have been dealing with for 6 months, I have pain in a lot of my joints but I’m not sure if that effects my nerves. I literally have symmetrical jaw pain, hand pain, finger pain, wrist pain, elbow pain, knee pain, and my feet burn when I stand for long. I’m just afraid my doc might not take me seriously because some symptoms don’t make sense or something.
Came here for hand stretches, didn’t know Doctor Jo was a hand model too! <3
Can you give vedio for Autoimmune Inflamatory Arthritis pain stiffness physiotherapy exercise vedio for joint of hand, leg, back, neck

Hi dr. Jo
My doctor diagnosed I’ve arthritis in my right shoulder. Which is in early stage.
Could you please suggest me some exercises.
Thanks.
Hi Dr.Jo, I started watching your videos this morning and doing the exercises you are showing here. Might you have something for an index pointing finger knuckle joint? Thank you very much for your videos!
Been doing version of your technique and it’s really helped me regain hand strength. Thanks!
Hi hi, is it possible to straiten up my finguers? my natural position of my finguers are a bit strange. They go strait to the first joint (naturaly it’s just one bone) but then it goes down to the second joint, and then up to the tip of the finguer. Basicaly they make a “z”.
Thanks for the advice, I have started doing those exercises and notice that my hands do function better. Thanks for sending me those tips. Bill
Great! I’m going to do these daily for my arthritic hand. Thanks!
THANK YOU JANE for your informative and practical techniques! I have RA in my hands (shoulders, elbows, ankles ) and its getting more difficult to do everyday things. I appreciate u doing exercises just for those who suffer from arthritis. It seems that fitness instructors has forgotten about those who suffer from arthritis/joint problems. I will try to incorporate everything u taught and even some of your exercises. I have a question, why not do a fitness program just for arthritis?
I tried this type of exercise but I got lots pain in my fingers.
too much of swelling my middle finger it is good or not please give reply.
I tried to do some of those finger stretches and it was hard, turns out my skin is very stiff and dry, so I tried to do them today with some moisturizer it helped a lot! my fingers were very bendy and had no problem what so ever:) thanks Dr jo.
Rheumatoid Arthritis: The Infection Connection by Dr. Katherine Poehlmann right here on YouTube.
Hello. Thank you for this info and for making us laugh at the end. Fun is also important part of treatment. I suffered from carpal tunnel syndrome 21 years ago. It was doe to repetitive action at my work, not eating enough food, passing my whole work time with a fruit and a vitamin shake, which gave energy to work even with an empty stomach. I was able to escape from surgery by researching how the people cured themselves. I was given the opportunity to changed the type of work from cashier to a floral arrangement specialist and I love it. It took me a year I recover.
I studied life styles and foods diet that other people have done in the case. No dairy products, no nitrated meats, no sugar, no fried food, no gluten food Ect. I did exercises 2/week and went to Drs. too. So, l passed 21 years in good health. And now the hands are imflammed. Maybe arthritis is a like dormant sickness would comes back when we are not taking good care of us, and specially when we get old. Is that true Dr? I just never give up and I keep searching for natural remedies and many of them are working. One of them warm Castor oil massage and rapping after to live overnight. I did 3 nights in a row and I saw good results. It is a detoxification process. I would continue going to the gym more often for yoga and dancing. As after retirement the house keeping is a never ending story, I would have to scheduled brakes in my routines and not skipping meals. There would be a lot of search and practice to leave a healthy life after retirement. My hands would be OK. It is a long process but some people in my road would need it too. Thank a lot.
Funny to see a video using demonstrating help-tools using ALL THE DAMN FOOD CAUSING THE DISEASE!!!
I strrtched both hands at once, which felt fine to me. Have had PT when I had a wrist fracture and 1 yrs earlier other side elbow fracture. I broke 2 falls in 2 yrs each time with different hand. Now have thumb arthritis, predominantly in left but feel it in right also. I wasn’t sure if exercise was okay for this as I had heard it might make it worse? Is that inaccurate? Had a shot in left but it didn’t work. Follow up next week.
Hello Dr jo.. I need your help actually my younger sister did not do work properly by her right hand.. please suggest me an exercise for her hand problem… Please Reply.. Thank you

Hi Dr. Jo,
I have extreme arthritis in my right shoulder. I would like to avoid getting a shoulder replacement by stretching and exercising instead. I can’t get on the ground due to cerebral palsy. Do you have an alternate exercise to the one you demonstrate in the video using the resistance band? Thanks for any help you can provide!
I did the exercises and felt relief in my hands almost instantly. Been suffering from arthritis for many years but only now have begun to do exercises for this condition. I ask myself why on earth did I wait this long? Better late than never, that’s for sure. Folks, if you suffer from arthritis, please do an exercise program immediately. You will be glad you did so!
Thank you. The cold weather has my arthritis hurting even more and none stop. I was going to take a muscle relaxer tonight but just doing these exercises once has brought my pain level from an 8 to a 4.

This helps, but my biggest issue is the swelling at the joint where my pointer finger joins the hand. I believe they call this the Carpmetacarpal joint? Is there anything I can do to alleviate the swelling which causes pain? It is to a degree that stops me from practicing the guitar, but it gives a perfect excuse for why my playing is so atrocious!
Hi Dr. JO I saw your video for shoulder pain, Thanks it inspired me to do the exercises. I also wanted to know if have any exercises for knee pain. thanks in advance.

I have the same issue. I feel like my heavy weight-lifting is putting too much stress on my hands anymore. Thanks for any suggestions.
Dr. Jo, I had surgery on 3 trigger fingers on my right hand and am trying to get my grip back. My Index finger has a permanent bend and will not straighten out. One question:why this arthritis move all around in the body??
Like from hands to shoulder and then feet etc.
Would it be good idea to use these stretches and exercises before or after playing a musical instrument? Or both?
Thank you a thousand time. I recently got rhematoid arthritis in my hands and I missed doing weight training. You’ve made it possible.
The first one shoulder tangling gives me instant relief. Wow
Hi Dr Jo, I have joint pain at the base of the thumb will these exercises help with this?
These are great. Thank you. I had better get started. Getting arthritis in my first joint in both index fingers and thumbs. What do you think about ring splints for arthritis?
I wonder if she should consider increasing fat intake and reducing carbs and veggies?
I’m originally form the Forest Hills section of Queens. Every time my Jewish friends have problems I recommend going to a kosher butcher for lamb fat for cooking.
I’d also suggest not eating out on Saturday night. It’s customary for observant families to eat out or have a big home cooked meal when Sabbath ends. Cooking at home with lamb fat or even beef tallow allows Mrs. Goldstein to greatly reduce her omega 6 intake. Eating out guarantees heavy exposure to omega 6 oils.
Replacing wheat-based cereal and bread foods with egg yolks and turkey bacon should help. Eliminating the cooking oils and replacing them with lamb fat should show improvements in RA.
But her lifts will suffer some from a decrease in carbs and increase in fat.
Can you please give some special exercise for rheumatoid arthritis for hand and back pain
you’re more like batgirl than super girl.. you got the brains.. what i like about you is you give people ” options ” like people who are forced to live a life on opoids like hydrocodine because it doesnt get stronger you concur defintley

Is it possible to restore range of motion with osteoarthritis; I also have narrowing of the joint space and a bone spur off the glenoid. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!
I add this to my group of exercisers. I got severe osterporis. Had hip replacement June 28 cause of bone death, avascular necrosis, so scared it can go to o5her parts of my body. Trying to change diet n drink more water. What helps with kyposis ma’am.? Thank you
Thanks Doctor Jo, I was injured at work last year ( August 2015) actually it was hurting before that going back to 2014, and in April of 2015, started going to therapy at a hospital, but that didn’t help and the therapists felt that I had a tear, long story short, I had an MRI and was diagnosed by a shoulder surgeon that I needed surgery so went and had that done in August. They found a tear in my rotator cuff and that my labrum was shredded ( not torn, but shredded?) and I had a huge bone spur and that they said I had sever arthritis. Not sure why or how, but I was an avid weight lifter and my job is construction and I do a lot of over head work. Anyways, I’m in constant pain now, and my arm feels worse than it did before the surgery. The doctors are saying it’s because of the arthritis, but it never hurt like this before the surgery and i was still lifting some heavy weights even when it was supposedly torn. I’ve seen my doctors and the next recommendation is to have a complete shoulder repair, which I’m not to keen on. I will start some of these types of stretches and believe me I really stopped any other therapy and all weight training back in April, but I did the therapy the staff told me to do, but my arm is in terrible pain all the time. What else can I do or take to alleviate this pain?

I went on a keto diet and in a period of 2 months slowly stopped all medicines there’s no pain and no flare ups been 4 years now. Best exercise for me is tennis and stretching… and some weights with care.
Strong inside and out. You are a major inspiration. Keep it up!
I don’t have arthritis, but I am an L.M.T. So im learning your stretching and exercises to help recommendations for a client of mine. I decided to give this a try myself and I was surprised about the Improvement of range of motion in my shoulders. I’ll be definitely watching more of your videos. Thanks so much
Hi man! I’ve been working out for years. In the past year I’ve had some strange pain in my joints. My hands and legs were having inflammations. Couple of weeks ago, I got diagnosed rheumatoid arthitis. Got 7 cortison injections right away to relief the pain. I DON’T want to stop working out so do you workout still if your joints hurt or do you rest till it sort of goes away and then start the gym again?
