9 Tips for a Healthy Ergonomic Workstation Mayo Clinic
Video taken from the channel: Mayo Clinic
Let’s review the top points of setting up your workstation with the health of your body as a priority: Both feet are supported by the floor or footrest. Knees are in line with, or slightly lower than, hips. Sitting on or slightly in front of sit bones.Start with making the conscious effort to maintain an upright position with your shoulders back and your neck upright (your chin should be making a 90 degree angle with your neck). Once you have gotten that position down, you will start to notice what items in your workstation need modifying.
To help with this, sit with your butt all the way up against the back of the seat and place a small, firm cushion in the hollow area of your lower spine where your back naturally sways. 2. Bend.Make sure your knees can fit comfortably under the desk without bumping into it.
If you cannot adjust your chair and desk enough accommodate a proper arm position, consider the use of a keyboard tray or alternative keyboards (adjustable tilt and keypad angles).Keep your pelvis neutral with your buttocks against the back of your chair. Proper sitting posture at a desk begins at your pelvis. You want to sit with your pelvis in a neutral position, with your buttocks against the back of the chair.
You might be wondering how do I sit with a neutral pelvis?Change your posture regularly. Regardless of how healthy your work posture is, sitting in any one position for an extended period is not healthy. If you have an adjustable chair, alternate between the following positions, all of which will keep your pose neutral and relaxed: Sit upright.
Keep your torso roughly vertical, your thighs horizontal, and your lower legs vertical.Stand up and go to get a drink, take a toilet break or just walk up and down the corridor, then sit back in your ‘good posture’ position. You should also consider walking or standing meetings, and aim to take your lunch break away from your desk, incorporating a brisk walk. You will find that the more you move the better you concentrate.Your upper legs should be flat against the bottom of the chair.
Your lower legs should form a 90 degree angle at the knees. Your feet should be at a flat 90 degree angle to your lower legs. Your back should be at between 100 and 135 degrees in relation to your legs (if possible).Ask a colleague to take a picture of you at your workstation and check to see if it supports well-aligned posture (eyes looking straight, neck not bent, forearms parallel to the floor, low back in its natural curve). If not, talk to your human resources contact for help if needed.
Follow the 20/20/20 rule.To help adjust your posture to your laptop or your monitor, you may consider changing your screen height to eye-level by lowering your office chair or investing in a monitor stand. Alternatively, you can invest in a sit-stand converter to elevate your office to a more optimal posture.1. Posture at Work Tips. Let’s start with some basic posture tips.
These are simple ways you can keep tabs on your desk posture throughout the day. Avoid Sitting at the Back of Your Chair. Keep a few inches of space between your back and the back of your chair.
This will cause you to sit up straighter rather than slumping against the back of.Adjust the height of the work surface and/or the height of the chair so that the work surface allows your elbows to be bent at 90º, forearms parallel with the floor, wrist straight, shoulders relaxed. Place all controls and task materials within a comfortable reach of both hands so that there is no unnecessary twisting of any part of the body.
How to sit at work to minimize neck pain, back pain, and muscle knots. Ergonomic workstation setup presented by a doctor of physical therapy to put your individual body type in.Try playing around with the feature adjustments on your monitor and the height adjustment of your desk. The goal is to support neutral posture for your upper body, shoulders, and arms. A neutral posture may help you work with only minimal muscle.
First, sit with your back to the wall or headboard, with one pillow placed horizontally behind your lower back for support and one vertically along the length of.

Well sorry but I disagree with this. I hope folks watching will also check out “The best way to sit at your desk at work.” for an alternative view.
As Bob and Brad point out their way (90 degree angle) is difficult to maintain for more than about 20 minutes. One suggests getting up as often as every 10. For most of us that’s impractcle at best or even not realistically possible (as in my case).
The reason why you DON’T want to be at a perfect 90 degree angle is because you WILL slouch forward to release strain on the lower back. The reason you DO want the backrest to allow you to recline a bit is because the backrest is then doing some of the work supporting the weight of your back.
Cheers.

I came to learn, Intro had me in stitches. I’m a horrible person.
Ok, I get all of the reams of paper jokes, but who seriously thought about raising their desk with reams of paper as he was talking? #5feet11inches
Hey thank you for this video, it will help my husband and I a TON!! Do you have any information about how to stretch the hip flexors/ strengthen them?
This COMPLETELY fixed the pain I get when I sit down. Thank you so much!
Great tips once again. Now if only I can get my company to approve my set up or else they’ll be looking for missing reams of paper.:D
STEP 1 USE RBG IT MAKES YOUR PC FASTER AND YOU CAN SIT BETTER
As an Uber driver my posture driving all day was like a hunch on my back, It felt like i am carrying a load on my back and can’t get rid of severe back pain. My friend recommendd me smart posture corrector and i was like wtf is that. I was really skeptical at first an was pretty sure all these crap things dont work.and he forced me to get one it was $70 and i can not explain how much i thank him everytime i see him he just save me form a really bad posture and back pain. it was like a bird got a freedom from his cage lol. It was not like a traditional brace but its a smart brace with a sensor in it which vibrates when ever you slouch and reminds you to keep your self straight. The best part is that it blends well with my clothes and I don’t have to feel like I have something sticking out in my back. Get yours today. You won’t regret it. I know I didn’t. I love it. you can get it here http://www.smartposturecorrectors.com

Hello I have a question
In case of study most of the table height and chair height are fixed. So if we want to see text we must move foreward the head in real situation. So what can i do in that case.
P.s I am not native speaker(korean) so sentance maybe awkward.
Love your comments “Teach your kids good posture”. Love the mood and demo great job. Have been looking around for lower back stiffness issues that I know are a mix of 1) sitting longer hours, 2) bad *mattress (my situation), 3) just not investing enough time/effort to understand the posture and it’s affect on productivity. You guys make solid points. Please keep doing more lots of love and respect!
(PS the 2 people combo works great and thanks for keeping it to the point in a wonderful way again)
the problem for me trying to fix my posture is that all those tiny little muscles that have become weak over time tire out extremely quickly and it feels incredibly uncomfortable to hold a good postural position. it honestly feels like im not sitting correctly, but thats just because all those tiny muscles are being worked for the first time in ages. it’s honestly a huge piss of as its so easy to default back to bad posture because its more comfortable at that given moment.
Being completely straight long term puts a lot of pressure on your spine discs.. you need to prop you lumbar like they are showing but also tilt you chair back to relieve some of the pressure from complete downward line… otherwise like they said, you are going to hold it only for 15-25 minute tops. So sit straight, prop you lumbar, tilt your chair.. and remember that sitting in ANY position is not good for you.. it will in time decrease your muscle volume and then you will get all kinds of problems like fast heartbeat, vertigo, even fainting and “moving vertebrae” where you risk injury with rapid movements in this stage.
Great video, thanks! What do you guys think of kneeling chairs for posture?
Person named Gaylord + Mayo clinic. i’m a horrible person for laughing at this.
How do you get screen closer and stay ergonomically correct?
Whats the setup, or does anyone know what chair he has. Also how do you feel about arm rests?
1 tipput the desktop computer on the floor and work on it sitting down. thats what i do and my back feels good.
HAHAHAHA I’m so unhealthy I’m Graphic designer and i spend 15 to 20 hours with out taking a break, I cross both of my legs on the chair, It’s time to change can anyone recommend a good chair for long hours?

2 monitors on desk, one of them is laptop
No break, sometimes for more than 4 hours
i have rsi syndrome for about 6 years now and i can tell you, the desk ergonomics (such as Posture) doesnt help me get less pain or something like that.
Its the vertical mouse and my epicondylitis brace what is helping me the most.
I’ve been doing this for years and it works. Listen to what this man tells you because it will help you not to be in pain!
I just got IKEA järvfjället and the lumbar support make my back hurt is ti good or bad every libmar support always hurst my back I work in IT and this is a very searious thing to solve for me..
You know what else is really bad, staying in the same position for a long time, no matter how good the posture.
These videos are amazing, simple & powerful. Getting up and stretching is really helpful to be more productive:)
9 tips. Because 10 tips are so overrated and stressful on proper memory ergonomics.:-)
Hi sir, I have a neck pain, if I turn my neck left or right, I feel pain, also I feel pain in my spinal area to the hips, and feel pain in my left leg and feel stretch in my leg… kindly guide what should I do to overcome…
when you sit in your ergonomic chair should your back be completely on it and lined up or should you straighten out your posture a little bit and keep your back mostly alligned.
Screen in front of me, keyboard in front of it (not behind), and mouse on my able hand’s side. Got it
Donald Trump wants build a wall between Mexico and USA?
REAMS OF PAPER!!
My boss used to scold me when i sat like this going inside the desk. I always felt compfortable doing this and now I know it’s the right way. + I never listened to my boss on this though. xD
1:19 maybe start with not killing your back…how about that
this clip is WRONG, I induced lower back pain from sitting at an angle for too long! Now I sit straight (90 degree) with a proper back support, monitor at my eye level. Because if you sit at an angle, you are shifting your pelvis bone which eventually will pitch your lower back muscle and give you back pain (extreme numbness or pitching pain). Also by eye level with the monitor also takes away the straining you give to your neck and shoulders, no need to bend down to look. Trust me, I am a new person now since I have using this technique for over a year, no more pain, no more massage therapist, no more physiotherapist!
shoud i lean back or in a 90 degreee angle with my back and with pillow support?
sorry, but I don’t think that “to sit the way that you usually sit when driving a car” is a good analogy…. maybe some car sits are ergonomically made to sit correctly… unfortunately, not the ones I can afford…( or even test drive)….
Do you have any thoughts on chairs for sitting (as mentioned (binge watching Netflix)). I have lower compressed discs and doing therapy right now.69 yrs old. Using a lumbar pillow but always looking for the right chair.High backed chairs that push my shoulders forward bother my neck(arthritis) and recliners aggravate lower back. Got any thoughts? Would appreciate ideas.
the exercises are nonsense, not the tip but the ones he showed
so, i have a gaming chair and i bought it because i often have pain in my neck. i even sleep without a pillow at night because my neck hurts easily the next day when i have one tried about 5 different kinds of pillows and all result in pain.
The chair i have now has a very thick lumbar pillow, so i took that away and put a much more comfy one there. But now for my neck/head pillow, this may sound stupid, but i have no idea how to use it. am i supposed to lean my neck (and what part of it?) or my head against it? So far it seems im too conscious of ‘i need to lean against this thing’ and i strain my neck backwards. My neckpain was gone the first few days but now its coming back full force. Anyone know how I can relieve and prevent the neck strain/pain? It’s also causing me headaches.
Thank you! As a computer programmer, I have to sit for many hours a day. I would try to sit up straight, but my back muscles felt very stressed after some time.
Basic exercises while sitting on a chair…
Ya baby that’s my style
No Mouse Pad?
So, you want me to feel the painful scratching everytime I move my mouse?
Can you please make a how to stand up video, I’ve been stuck here for three days
In the standing workstation it seems she has to look below the straight eyeline view? Is that ideal?
I will not thank you. Have you research on programmer, mathematician, doctor, physicist, chemist…… without chair without back support?
Nice Video clip! Forgive me for the intrusion, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you considered Dinanlinson Straightening Life Approach (should be on google have a look)? It is a good one of a kind product for learning how to cure lower back pain without the headache. Ive heard some decent things about it and my cooworker after many years got cool results with it.
Thanks for this. What about people that use microscopes for work? They’re not built to allow a straight posture and often the head tilts down and the neck and upper back follow
I am an artist and I use two computer monitors to paint from. I am left handed. I usually paint with the watercolor paper down on the table like I would do to write. I have two questions… I find myself leaning on my right elbow and hip instead of maintaining good posture (years of bad habit.). I also use a regular rolling office chair that rocks and swivels (kind of like the one in your video.). Do you have a recommendation for: 1) better placement of artwork while painting to maintain posture 2) better recommendation for type of chair. I have had back and should issues on my right side as a result of poor sitting posture.
I love that at https://youtu.be/Ree1CWifQTg?t=219 he’s not going anywhere haha
What about if I 9 monitors 6 consoles 17 speakers 4 microphones 7 keyboards 21 pc towers
I’m very happy with this video it was very helpful thank you:)
Thank you for sharing this! Improper posture may put us at risk of developing back problems and pain. This could also lead to nerve problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome. This video is going to be a great help!
If a student sit like this to study, he will be getting neck pain!
We’re all about ergonomics and it’s great to see awareness spreading online!
Just want to add another key point I figured while dealing with lower back stiffness from sitting trying to think you’re doing a relaxed breathing style/yoga posture of sorts while trying to sit and feel all of your shoulder and other joins feeling the freedom/looseness while taking few deep breaths seems.. all without actual table/desk/pc near your.. seems to help figure the appropriate height adjustments (as to where to place desk/chair/keyboard rest).. Thanks again!
This seems to be mostly about holding yourself in a position, but that’s tiring.
his name is Gaylord bride…….did his parents want him to be bullied in high school or what?
Keyboard angle distance and type will cause aches to wrists and cause our arms and body to adjust out of the 90.90.. its so hard
Thank you so much! This is great information. I really appreciate you sharing your expertise.
Listen gamers. This is your engineer to your battle stations. Don’t take him lightly.
Long story short, I work a lot, sitting job mostly. L5 S1 herniation 1 month old? Whats the max time I can sit per day?
Chair is broken can’t adjust (reclining or up/down)
Desk has drawers
Desk can’t adjust height
Wow, thank you. I can’t do most of these!
Sir, can pls tel me correct posture for reading in books for long hours???
Yes, these are good. I would add: set a timer to go off every 10 mins., which can be extended after a while, as a reminder to check your posture.
Thanks very much, I already, liked shared and subscribed ♥️♥️♥️
Hi Jared I personnaly use BackWatcher ( http://backwatcher.ml ). What do you think of it?
This is from mayo? Not really good idea enough, getting a lot of emf!, Stay away from computer as much as possible, better look up screen for avoid getting straight neck.
I got a question!
If we sit too long will it effect our sleep?
Do you have a video about the ergonomics of driving a car. Thanks. You are helping this old body!
My IT tutors would always give me shit about my posture… Glad I never listened
What do you think of a standing desk?
And what is the good position with this sort of desk?
Thanks
Very informative video, thank you sir! My back neck pain is killing me, I will try your suggestion.
Wait a second. The second video in the link about sitting postures says that the first video is wrong…
Thanks!! also u kinda look like bucky from captain America lol
If my monitor is too high so that i’m looking up to see the top of it, can I fix that? Should I just tilt it downwards?
Please make a video for perfect Car sitting position. Thank you
Happy Halloween, Jared&family!!! This is definitely a must watch and keep video for me. Good news, as per my gyno, I don’t have DR. Bad news, the mommy tummy no longer has a reason or excuse for being there. He was like, “if you wanna lose weigh, close your mouth!!” He’s one funny guy, sarcastically speaking, my gyno! I always laugh to tears whenever I have to go see him But I digress,….So……. CONGRATULATIONS on your 200K+!!!! yaaaayyy You guys are on the roll!!!! Keep up the fantastic job and many blessings to you all!!!
I badly need this now that I am working from home because of the quarantine. Thank you!
Why is it best to look at the top of the screen versus the center of the monitor? Does this guideline apply to today’s modern monitors, which are quite large (20 inches+)? Also, should there be any forward lean in the head; shouldn’t your head/ears be directly over your shoulders? Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for this great video!
I think people do know that although it is called a wrist rest, but it is not for your wrist, instead, it is designed for your edge of your palm so that when you are typing, your palm can match with the edge of the keyboard without hanging your hands on the edge of the keyboard.
can you do a video on keyboard/mouse mounts for gaming chair.
What are you doing wrong with your desk setup right now?

What kind of chair should I buy? Should I buy a Gaming Chair?
Every desk I see is always way too high, it has nothing to do with me or my chair, every single office desk out there is manufactured WAY too high even for tall people with good posture and its given me upper back problems. The desk in this video is perfect, nice and low so you can properly rest your forearms and gives good control over your mouse and keyboard, they want you to pay for ergonomics here yes its all about $$$ when it could be as simple as average retailers just making the desk about an inch lower its so stupid
I put my pc monitor keyboard and mouse werever i want
i’m sat here on a fixed chair with no recliner or height adjustment and i have a bit of wood in the way of my knees
Will do all as my neck back and head paining at work and home Thanks Ramya
Thanks for the 4. advice that you should support bottom part of palm of the palm or exactly the wrist instead of supporting forearm!
My wrist hurts because I put my forearm on an ergonomic mouse pad.
Thanks a lot for clarify this posture, years ago a pain specialist told me that the backrest from the chair, was for that: “to rest your back on it” looking at the web always appears the 90 degrees position and that’s for killing anyone’s back.
Nice video. Are your arms by your sides? Or sticking out a bit? I can’t tell from your video.
Good video except that you should NOT say standing isn’t good for you. Standing is excellent and much better than sitting. You should alternate sitting and standing. Stand up desks are also more adjustable. You also should have keyboard tilted away not toward you.
Just had an ergonomic assessment of my workspace and everything you shared is exactly what the industrial hygienist recommended. They also recommended I get fitted for an ergonomic chair! Woohoo! Hope my employer has deep pockets!
Hi, which chair are you using in this video. Can you share the brand and model?
Are we just gonna ignore that the desk is too high and that wrist rests like that actually pressure your nerves and cause more damage?
Thanks for the video, David! I wonder which keyboards do you recommend? How is the one you use in the video called?
Not certain about the points made but,if anyone else wants to learn about
phone screen repair
try Saankramer Electronic Magazine System (should be on google have a look )? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my brother in law got excellent results with it.
A $30 monitor mount can do more for your posture than a $600 chair. The stands monitors come with take up space on the desk, so there’s a limit to how close and high you can get the screen. If you get a monitor arm that clamps onto the back of the desk, you can get your monitor hanging right over your keyboard, keeping your from getting tempted to lean in.
A chair without arm rests can’t be ergonomic. They should support your arms and let your neck relax.
Hello i have pain in my shoulder if i play fortnite for more then 1 hour my keyboard is at 180 degrees do you know what i can do to play without getting pain? And can it ever go away?
when you lean back into a chair don’t you naturally tend to crane your neck forward?
My desk is so uncomfortable it makes me mad i cant find the right postion to sit and it sucks and im angry about it im uncomfortable while typing this.
No. You guys are wrong. You should not have to place any objects
Also when standing up from a sitting position, place your hands on your thighs, slightly look upwards and then stand to avoid rounding your back.
So I’ve been sitting correctly all along! Nice, trust your gusts better than what people tell you to do.
you should have made a shot above ure desk while you were sitting there.
Your head is inclined to look screen, and only in the end of your video you said to support the whole arm.Only these two things i believe are not that great otherwise you are spot on. Actualy I was about to use your link in my bog.
the average person tends to slouch after sitting for 15 minutes
Me: I never slouch
realizes Im slouching
What happens if you every day for hours without taking a break by walking stretching?
I am finding that arm rests are actually making harder to get these ergonomics which is ironic, then again I have a relatively high desk that I wish could be lower…
would love a video on how to write at a desk and avoid hunched over posture when you have to write
Thank you! Simple and easy to follow. I downloaded a break reminder. Hopefully that helps.
If u tell me that half the viewers on this vid are not gamers, ill yeet me phone off the balcony mate no cap
I don’t agree with the compromise to your feet. Feet should always touch the ground fully
“are we DONE”: poor English. It’s FINISHED not done. The WSJ is degenerating.
You are incorrect. You need to rest your arm by adjusting the table and chair level. You don’t want your arms floating all the time regardless of how flawless your posture is if you do, it will strain your shoulders as they will be the ones carrying them all the time. Please don’t spread critical info without providing credible sources
Thanks, I didn’t even realize I was sitting way too low. My ankles would also hurt because my leg space is constrained but it’s much better with a higher sitting position. Luckily I can move the monitor up too.
They should teach this at schools. I have a posture problem and have done since I was 5… Only one tea her commented on my posture at school
But if u tilt the chair then it might cause nerd neck. Or at least it causes me to get those bad postures
Chair and desks are made for 6ft people I am 5’2 I’m always in an awkward posture!!! Boo.
I have tendonitis, I tried a lot of positions and I’m testing a new one that is more comfortable, I must think about a lot of details like my digital tablet to draw, the mouse position. Those wrist rests are bad for me, it causes a lot of pressure in my wrist, which is bad like tendonitis.
My desk is way too low. I’ve got risers coming in the post. Should hopefully stop my slouching and ease my back pain.
Wow. That’s one of the most useful videos I’ve found on youtube so far. I thank you very much
Ok but now your head is tilting downwards and your shoulders are slouching. For hours at a time, you don’t want your elbows out in front of you, you want them lower and with your hands nearly on your lap. That is the most natural position for your body. Your screen should also be positioned rather high and go good distance away so that you lift your chin.
Your legs are a different story, but the biggest issue you will see is a weak core and pelvic tilt from sitting at your desk without the core being activated ever.
This is a very important video because my body and organs are hurting from a non-ergonomic wreck of a setup. God!
What if I tilt my chair inwards instead of outwards? Feels much more comfortable for me but is that still good for my back? I have fibromyalgia.
So what about the tilt mechanism on the seat of the chair? Shouldn’t my upper legs be level & not inclined upward to promote circulation? If I tilt my chair back at the base my knees are then higher than my hips. Although this feels more comfortable on my back isn’t it worse for circulation?
Inorder to sit in that postures, doesn’t ones core need to be strengthened. Cause I try to sit like that but I just can’t hold it for long and inevitably give in
Great tips but there was one thing i was waiting for him to say which he didn’t!! She was using a wrist rest with the keyboard which is totally wrong. Every video I’ve seen says it puts too much pressure on the wrist and is totally unnecessary. If the keyboard is too high she should’ve got a flatter one.
Also one other thing, the height of the chair should also be adjusted so that she doesn’t have to shrug her shoulders (which she wasn’t of course, so the height was correct). If increasing the height results in your feet dangling you should use a footrest.
i have a gaming chair now and i bought it because i always have neck pain. it has a lumbar pillow that is too thick so i swapped it out for one that is more like a soft roll and much more comfy. but for my neck… it may sound crazy but im not sure how to use the pillow that came with the chair. specifically, am i supposed to lean my head, lower neck, middle neck, or upper part of the neck/lower head against it?
The first few days i had the chair the pain vanished but now its coming back full force and i just keep fumbling with the positioning of the backrest, lumbar, how far i sit on the seating part and of course, the neck pillow. i feel like maybe i am too conscious of ‘i have to lean against this thing’ and so i strain my neck backwards to do so. that’s what i think, but when i try to relax and not push my head back, i still hurt in my neck. it also causes me headaches. always has.
does anyone here know how to relieve and prevent this neck strain/pain? i thought id found the answer but some time has passed and now i just dont know. maybe i just sit wrong in the chair altogether, but this shouldnt be rocket science….
I also cant sleep with any pillow at night, so i lay my head flat down on the bed and i always sleep on my back because otherwise the risk of neck pain and headaches is always increased. tried several pillows for that.
EDIT: its mostly the lower neck that hurts. not so much the shoulders, upper neck or back.
Hey these tiny things make a difference
respect from india
I strongly believe the standard for choosing the monitor height relative to eye level is wrong. Monitors have overall become much larger and both Windows and MacOS have key components of the GUI at the bottom of the screen.
Try moving the top of your monitor a little higher than eye level, so your eyes are actually about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way down from the top of the monitor. This allows for your eyes to easily dip to the bottom of monitor with needing to flex your neck. And still allows your eyes to easily reach the top of the monitor without extending the neck.
It bothers me when tips aren’t explained.. For instance, when he says “so that you’re looking at the top of the monitor, not the center”, I’d like to know why?! If I’m looking at the center of the monitor most of the time, isn’t that the spot I should be adjusting the hight according to?
you guys would make a good comic strip, your dialogue at the end is pretty great.
You forgot that the level of computer monitor is too low, making people look downwards and end up hunch back
90 percent of all seats, either in cars or planes or couches or recliners are very harsh on your back. Although seats in cars have improved a lot
But if I am a gamer and the csgo match, is in 14:15 losing I won’t do that during the round
Keep it up gentlemen…stay united. And keep helping people…..cheers.
I find the desks at school are low and I have to roll my shoulder and look down at my work
Great video for current times. I have an OK setup, but still uncomfortable. Couple slight adjustments after this video seems to have eased it.
There was no reason for me to watch this recommendation. None of it applies to me, but it was 3am so I felt obliged.
I like reminders that trigger habits I am forming. When I see the use of a pillow or towel roll, my mind goes back to a good friend who was a Chiropractor. He first introduced us to towel roll therapy years ago. My perspective on this issue at this time is to get a chair with no back. That is a very fast reminder, eh? You learn fast!
I used to have lumbar pain and was asked to maintain the right posture to keep my muscles healthy. 2 days back, I watched this video and was really impressed with the description and the logic. Yet somehow my back ache has reappeared and become unbearable in just two days of sitting this way. I took regular breaks.
@BobandBrad -Could you offer any insights?
Can you please share the height of this particular desk? Or if it is height adjustable then please tell the height as shown in video.
So how high should my chair be if my desk is height adjustable
Our office burst out laughing when they heard the name Gaylord!
This was absolutely fabulous I think you should absolutely repost this again especially with what’s going on with COVID-19 and being isolated more people working at home more than ever. They’re on all types of video conferences & the second phase is coming probably gonna be worse than the first time
all desks are adjustable, you just need a decent hacksaw
Being sit is the worst position ever. A stand-up office is the less harmful from far. With the same desktop screen / laptop support / wireless keyboard recommendations you say.
We all should throw all chairs out: the sitting position will make anyone absolutely ill for life.
What about us that need files and binders infront of the keyboard, don’t have the option to pull the screen closer nor the keyboard or the mouse, I have to streach for it. I get huge amount of tention in my shoulder.
why are my knees always like his seen in 1:04 when sitting? can this be corrected?
Do you get neck or back pain at work? Did you try these tips? Let us know your experience in a comment below! I hope these things help you out and thank you so much for watching!
I searched this to fix my posture but i don’t know if this is a reliable source since the comments are shitcommenting
I was hoping he would mention keyboard and wrist rest. How do I know if I need them?
This would lead to piriformis pain if lying back for long time.
watching this because my lumbar region has started to give out and foam rolling/lower back stretching can only suffice for so long
i think sitting along hours/time is so bad not exercise our body just walked around then now is normal for 5minutes/10minutes but my chair is bad huhuhu thanks to you bob&Brad DR
Do you ever slouch? I slouch all of the time. Dad said that slouching is hurting my back. I told him that I slouch so much that good posture hurts my back worse. LOL
“Mayo” Clinic? Gaylord? and it looks like a pair of mens briefs in the emblem! Seriously?
Is your wrist hurting from all the CS:GO grinding?
REAMS OF PAPER
Dr Gaylord use to work in the Gastroenterology department where his patients complained all day about their rear end pain. It was there that Dr. Gaylord developed a real interest in correct anus positioning and moved into the area of ergonomics because he saw the real need for regular stretching by bending over and touching your toes to help with pain from bad posture.
From years of suffering I feel like I’ve found the solution. Thank you guys for sharing:)
1. Use rolled towel and put behind lower back
2. Get up every 20 min and stretch
Sweet, just got to finish high school, get into university, finish university, and get a cubicle job
Im that much of a cheapskate that i’m using a toolbox as my foot rest
Or get a comfortable couch to lie back on. You may not be able to reach the computer but that does not matter, as the guy said ‘it is a workSTATION.
Buses stop at a bus station, trains stop at a train station so what is expected at a workstation. The word ‘station’ comes from ‘stationary’ i.e. it means stop. So, in calling it a workstation, they must mean that they expect work to stop while you are there.
this video got me interested thus watchin some of your other videos. subbed. i have a SecretLabs Omega 2020 Gaming chair and i still find it hard to get fully comfy. still lookin for techniques to better posture for video/photo editing, music producing and gaming.
Get a better chair. Hard to not roll back in that one. Back should be flat, not arched.
But as a writer, there are times when I have to work for hours on end without stopping. And although sitting too long or standing too long is not good, alternating often between sitting and standing works best especially for anyone with back pain.
She looked super enthusiastic about taking that break… better keep an eye on that one.
tip 1 0:44 Stretch you spine
tip 2 1:12 Pull in your stomach
tip 3 1:44 Retract neck and tuck chin in
tip 4 2:13 elevate your laptop
tip 5 2:42 get a lumbar support
tip 6 3:33 Keep feet on floor and knees at 90 degrees
Summary 4:05
Quite pretentious for an ‘ergonomist’ to be in a doctor/lab coat.
Went to fix my sitting posture. There’s a weird pressure under my left scapula. Is that normal?
I shaped my sea kayak back rest out of closed cell foam. I glued 3 pieces Together that measure 12″ wide by 9″ tall. They extend out from one of the kayaks structural walls ( bulk head ) 6″. I have ideas, how my back should be supported but im not a professional. I have a piece of of foam that measurew 3/4″ Thickness that acts as support for my lumbar as soon as my spine starts curving up. I’ve learned that upper lumbar support is trully where support is the most needed. It makes it feel as if the spine is complete straight up and controls the leverage from the sitting position.
I personally really like the name Gaylord. Also Gaylen. But I guess 90% of adults never graduate from that 6th grade sense of humor. And good video. But I think most office chairs don’t have enough lumbar support, even if you sit in them the right way.
The only thing I don’t agree is about wrist rest. It’s a must have. It’s there to help your hands rest in case you’re using mouse exclusively or just not typing atm.
“You need to move the mouse from your elbow instead of your shoulder”
Who tf moves the mouse from their shoulder
Great video. Thanks for doing this for all the people w/back problems!
The best way to sit is to stand up. I studied a lot and this is what I am doing now to maintain my health (I feel great now and I have a chronic disease): I hacked my office, I got a trampoline, a home bicycle, some elastic bands and accessories.. a stand up desk (from time to time). and I use them every 30 minutes or so. When I sit I’m using a lumbar pillow (kebado you can find it on amazon) but most of the pillows will do the trick. Many people think that going to gym is enough… but studies showed that we need stay active all day long.
A standing work station is always a great option. Thanks for highlighting some of these ideas! Cheers!
Not to be “that person” but ive been reading a few things that say sitting up straight is also bad and you should in fact lean back… so do i sit up straight or lean back?
Says: Don’t let your feet dangle,
proceeds to sit on high bed and dangle feet off of it ♀️♀️
Thanks for the great video! I’m looking into getting a kneeling chair to help keep my back straight since I have poor posture, do you guys think it would help?
i’m watching this whilst literally curled up on my chair with my legs on the side table, looking up at my monitor
So, what about studying? In this video you’re saying that if the screen is not at the proper height level, you’re gazing down and this leads you to pull your head down and etc., so, here my question is; what should we do when working on a paper that is on table? Because in this situation, we also need to gaze down on paper just like the same as the situation here in the video which is the wrong height level of the screen positioning, and this would lead us to pull our neck, head down. What’s the solution when working on a table?
Thank you very much for this video, especially when we started working remotely. I have kept the monitor top line at the eye level. I have Nearsightedness/myopia. But I am raising my head and neck is hurting at the neck/spine behind. Which is the best? should I lower the monitor?
anyone knows what is the mouse he is using seems very nice?
I get the worst pain in the knuckle joints when using a keyboard and mouse at work. Any tips on that?
Lord of the gay and clinic of the mayo here to save the world from wicked mistakes!
Can you make one video for elbow/forearms/wrist pain-free? That’s damn annoying.
The best way is to lay in bed with screen mounted to the ceiling and only use thought control. My research says this is the best way. But who cares how this affect our muscles over time….
I would like a chair like the one they are using. Where do you get one like this?
Thanks! This will help me! Is that awesome quote on your wall right above the video from David O. McKay!? I love that man!
Is this good for anterior pelvic tilt? I dont remember the last time i sat correctly. Horrific really
the legs in the air is a really, really bad advice. avoid it in any case
Does this leaned back posture not cause stress on the neck? It seems like sitting like this would create the head forward position that laptop usage causes, which results in poor posture.
OMG thanks so much you guys I forgot how to sit and all of these people were looking at me in church but now I fully got it down and it only took me a few hours
You say to adjust chair height for proper keyboard alignment but if I do this the chair is too low and my knees are bent (I’m 6’3), any tips
I get carpal tunnel with flat keyboards & with my Lenovo touchpad
I use a laptop but I can’t avoid pain because I don’t have a laptop stand, or external keyboard ;(
if my chair is in a fixed height has no castors is it considered a bad chair?
Lol I saw this a few years ago but now I need it and it’s super useful. Thankksssssss
then there’s all the fortnite players with the VERTICAL KEYBOARD
He failed to mention the most important thing that validates his theory. That is, you can’t achieve what he is asking/advocating, without a keyboard tray. How foolish, to make this video, and not show how you can use a keyboard while working in the desired “open angle” at the hips (greater than 90 degrees). It requires a close and low keyboard position….and he doesn’t provide that perspective….foolish to not point that out. No, I DON”T sell keyboard trays….
but no one talks about the neck, u cant sit at an angle cuz then the neck hurts
Why is to be standing bad for the body? I have been thinking all this time that it is better for your productivity.
This is the best video to explain about a good sitting position that I have come across. Great explanation, it solved many of the mysteries that I had. For example, after using wrist resting bar for some time, it actually made my hand hurt a lot! It was not supposed to do this…turns out they did cause the problem. And also the best sitting positions, this is making a lot of sense. THanks for the great work!
yeah but what about the size of the desk and the distance of a monitor?
