How to Set the Right Running (& Fitness) Goals. 1. Goals Must be Relevant. I don’t care where you find your motivation. In fact, it can come from anywhere and anything. Nevertheless, the 2. The Rule of Specificity. 3. Challenging but Realistic.
4. Short Term Goals. 5. Time them Out.Firstly, it’s helpful to set goals year round as and when you need to, but for the purpose of those clambering for new success in in the new year, here’s some advice on using goal setting to help improve your running.
A popular acronym is SMART goals.SMART Goals Acronym. Each letter in the SMART goals acronym stands for a word.
While the exact words may vary, the intent is the same – to help you set better goals. When setting SMART fitness goals, the letters stand for Specific, Measured, Achievable, Relevant, and Timed.Running more miles than in a previous year is a pretty measurable goal. If you ran 500 miles last year, you know how many you need to do in the year ahead.
But you need to find your mileage for last year and set a goal for next year that is achievable. Running a certain race distance is definitely measurable.Runners—rookies and veterans—grow when they set goals. And now is the time to set goals for the upcoming season. Using the S.M.A.R.T. goal setting system will help you reach your goals.

I call this approach The Ladder Technique – it helps you tackle a huge goal (like “run my first marathon”) in a smart, incremental way.
To work toward that goal, set shorter-term goals. Decide where you should be at the end of each month leading up to your goal, and then break those months into week-by-week progress toward.Diversify Your Running. Plan a few shorter races in your build-up to your target event (if your goal is a marathon, try a 10K and half marathon; if your goal is a 5K, race a mile), but also engage in 1 to 2 races that are longer than your target distance.Done right, a SMART goal is an objective-setting system that can motivate and inspire you and your staff to successfully grow your business.

A great way to set a timely goal is signing up for a race. This will help you focus your energy and prioritize your running to meet this timeline. Try it: Pull your calendar out right now and set a goal or two and mark the dates. Set your SMART goals today.
Creating SMART goals can help solve these problems. Whether you’re setting personal or professional goals, using the SMART goal framework can establish a strong foundation for achieving success. Below, we’ll demonstrate how to turn the goal, “I want to be in leadership,” into a SMART goal.

Ha ha! Great video! I once heard it said, “If David Beckham had a life coach in his teenage years, he’d now have a nice cosy career as an accountant!” I think it’s a bit unfair, but it’s very funny and makes a point worth noting! Like you, I’ve found it ESSENTIAL to separate our big dreams and life desires from the smaller, attainable, incremental goals that might show up WITHIN our mission. I love that you had the balls to put this out there!
I actually just listened to a podcast explaining how a set goal and a deadline is exactly what took us to the moon. The podcaster argued that because our government doesn’t set deadlines anymore, our country hasn’t made any changes. I guess this argument has its points, but also? Setting deadlines for yourself will never go out of style sooooooo. I just really don’t know why any aspect of S.M.A.R.T. goals is irrelevant to the things you’re saying. Smart is the acronym, not the definition. Idk man, seems like click-bait to me. You’re making all these people misunderstand what that acronym is all about.
Brendon, you’re the best! I love starting my mornings listening to you:)
Any race tips for breaking 2:10 in the 800? I’m more of a 3200/5000 runner but am trying out the 800 for the first time in a race tomorrow
Hello from Hong Kong, Nick! Have been your followers for a long time and impressed by your races and inspiration. It would be great if the lettrclub can ship international. Looking forward to your next videos!
if you are talking abt those visions or mission stuff, why don’t you use VMOSA? How do you expect a tool can solve all problems? so funny.
Brendon is currently my favourite person on YT atm
Love this, DUMB goals!! Set those goals that set us on fire on the inside again, that explodes beyond ourselves!!
Hey.
Bro I wanna race with uh..
If u are agree then reply my comment.
Challenge
It was not a smart goal to think someone on YouTube could actually explain what they have to say in a straight forward organized context.
NOTES:
1) Dream big.
2) Make your goal sound “sexy” & vibrant to inspire you to act on it.
3) METHOD FRIENDLY: Create a METHOD or practices to reach your goal. (Daily, Weekly, Monthly). Have a concrete plan to achieve this.
4) It has to be behavior driven. What is your “behavior trigger” to think & feel that can help or contribute to achieve this goal? What is the trigger that you can proactively think & that you can do in the moment that will contribute to your goal? Ex.: Goal is to improve relationship. In your garage before entering your home, ask yourself: What sweet thing can I say or to do for my partner to make him/ her happy?
Ex.: If you have a goal to eat healthy, when you go into a grocery, tell yourself to only go to the vegetable section (& not into the chips or junk food section).
Ex.: Before a business meeting or negotiation, ask what can I do or say that will achieve my goal?
You are really a very great person. Thank you very much for this great video. I learn many things from this video. Now I am going to execute it. Thanks again.
So I guess what you’re saying in soooooo many words Brendon is that the goal should be first exciting and then smart. But I ask you my friend, can all goals be exciting??
People are not lazy. They simply have impotent goals that is, goals that do not inspire them.
Tony Robbins
It’s a nice, different methodology from getting here to over there. I am helping someone at their job, and they have a link on SMART goal setting that I rolled my eyes at, and saw this video sitting here and glad I watched it. It’s a differing view on how to do goal setting with a little different approach. What he presents will resonate with the person I am helping, so that’s all I really need. Just a little less institutional thinking and more emotional thought processes.
I am enjoying to journal now. It brings clarity and I feel great after doing it.
I used to think I wanted to become a school teacher until I knew one and she said it’s not what it’s cracked up to be I used to think I wanted to raise horses until I was around people who raise horses and them horses are really expensive or they get sick and veterinarians expensive I understand how you feel
I absolutely love this. Brendon You’ve gone and lit a fire under us again and given us the courage to dream BIG!
Woow! This was actually awesome and I don’t even like motivational videos!:) Thanks!!
Thank you so much for sharing, I love the way you explain & make things easy:)
My 2019 Running Goal is to run my first marathon the race I chose is the Marine Corps Marathon. Even if I don’t get in via the lottery, I’ve got a couple charities that I know will have bibs for it in mind, or I might save up like crazy and do the Four Star Package (it costs between $1600-2450 depending on how many runners you have and how many days you want to stay).
I have so much work to do. So far, I have been able to get through races no matter what my training looked like thanks to generous time limits or just a ton of willpower, but that’s not gonna cut it with this one. I want to finish, and not just finish, but finish strong. So my focus needs to be on getting stronger, improving my running technique, and building up my overall fitness level. I also need to work on my discipline so that I don’t skip workouts just because I don’t feel like doing them. I know that traditional training plans don’t really work for me (I hate long runs with a passion and will find any excuse to avoid them), so one of my tasks in the next couple months will be working on figuring out a training method that does work.
This video makes a fundemental mistake, which is blurring the line between a “goal” which is in physical reality, and a vision/dream which is in visionary reality.
Your visions can be as lofty as you like, but making goals you will not reach kills your momentum, and weakens the strength of your declaration. If you ALWAYS accomplish your goals, you have accountability to yourself. If you always set goals you dont meet, then you no longer have the value of being able to guaruntee that you will do what you said you will do, precicely
Left brain is useful for some things, right braing is useful for vision, which can be as lofty as you like
Thank you Brendon. You give me 2 in 1. First, English lesson, second you make my day better. That is why I watch you every morning. Take Care.
DUMB is for people who are already SMART.
yes for beginners, they should use SMART then forwarded to DUMB.
Coz beginners have to be time bound otherwise they’d trapped in vicious cycle of procrastinations.
Notemy observations.
Method-friendly sounds a lot like SMART goals. 😉
Overall, I like the idea of DUMB goals. I do think that DUMB and SMART goals could be used in tandem, though.
Brendan, much as I usually admire him, has missed the point here. He is mixing up Vision with Goals and Objectives. Yes I agree DUMB Vision and high-level Goals, but keep SMART Objectives.
Brendan, this is one of my favourite videos of all time. Your energy, enthusiasm, truth, vision and humour never ever fail to pick me up if I feel down or unmotivated. Thank you.
I’ve watched it at least 10 times and shared it to everyone in my surroundings.
With love and light, Solenne from Australia
Totally agree on SMART goals are BS. Over a decade of coaching and consulting work, I found there’s only one step when it comes to setting and completing/exceeding goals for individuals, teams and companies focus on building the system, rather than the outcome. The system, or habits of the individuals, is where all the success of accomplishing goals resides. Everything else is busy work.
I see your point about the lofty dreams of cultural leaders. However, it’s not very applicable to everybody in normal day life. You’re pulling examples of the outliers of the world.
Putting up too lofty of a goal that is outside of your wheelhouse can be just as foolish as not having goals at all.
Is it a ‘DUMB’ goal if I’m super passionate about basketball and want to play in the NBA against Lebron if I’m 5’8″ and 28 years old?
I‘m so happy I just found you. Please never stop talking you just have that something that makes people/makes me wanna listen. I needed that! thank you.
you don’t have to down one method to promote yours that dumb dumb. DUMD-SMART yea thats its D.u.m.d S.m.a.r.t.
He’s essentially just trying to rebrand SMART goals. There’s nothing really antagonistic to the SMART goal process in this video.
Wow! Have watched a million motivation or goal setting videos and never saw this guy before. Powerful ideas. Thanks!
Current Goal is to hit the 1:30 mark for a half marathon. I’m currently at a PR of 1:42. I’m close. Not letting this one go. Long term is to qualify for Boston!
Happy New Year to you and your family Heather, I’m currently thinking about goals but I have a half (March) and full (October) booked to keep me training and still hoping to do Dopey 2020. Have fun doing the Disney half next week looking forward to the recap.
Hi Brendon my respect to you, for putting this out there and dedicating your life to help others achieve their full potential, and in turn living your dream. Video is completely profesional and your delivery and charisma is also great, the only positive critism I have, and this is only my humble opinion is that the music could be improved, or maybe no music.Defenetly a feature to keep in mind for future videos.
All the best.
Keep it shining.
Vincent
Already wrote my goals down! Also i was wondering if you could address something in an upcoming Q&A if you were meaning to do one soon. You’ve talked about cutting weight during cross season for longer distance races and would run 10-15 lbs lighter in the fall. How do/did you effectively cut weight?
Have you compared your mile/1500/5000 times in mastersrankings.com? You would probably clean up at Nationals or Worlds.
our Physical education teacher tells us to use smart goals. I just make them in front of him then throw them away.:)
Love this! It’s so true that people are building the wrong kind of businesses. Busy work is not your life’s work!
I always enjoy what you have to say, Brandon, however, I don’t believe that S.M.A.R.T. goals are set up to only to be used in a left brain way. In fact, I believe it truly depends upon how you go about this activity, and come to your answers! If, like the Saturday Night Live bunch of smart, L. and R. brained creates and visionaries, I can’t see them sitting quitely taking turns as the brainstorm their ideas, no way! I bet it looks like a Right Brained circus as they go back and forth creating it. And yet they better darn-tutton be timely, have order, be specific and ON TIME! Not to mention have a way to measure their effectiveness in all their skits and programs. But I’ll bet you anything they have to have their Left brainers to keep them on track dotting their i’s and crossing their t’s as well as their Right brained dreamers with so much creativity bursting from their little finger. Not to mention these folks have to accomplish this amazing feat of creativity and silliness every week, week in and week out! So again, I believe it’s in how and what your answers are what determines if it’s being done with the left or right brain. For instance, I can use my right brain when answering “S” “specific” answers as I list1. draw various logos 2. make time to find a song to represent my business. 3. pick the colors for my branding All of which can be L. or R brained activities, depending on how you go about doing them. And in fact, I would tout that it’s the Right brained folks that need S.M.A.R.T. Goals the most so that they stay on task and actually accomplish something. 98% of the time I agree with you Brandon, I just think here there may be another way see and do this! Best to you and your system though!
MY 1ST RACE THIS YEAR WILL PROB. BE THE BEND HALF MAR IN APRIL…MY GOAL IS 2 BREAK 1:38…IM..WILL BE 61 ILL USE YOUR ADVICE W/ THE NOTES THANKS..N GOOD LUC AT BREAKIN 11.
Excellent description of SMART goals.
My main event though secondary in terms of my usual running events is the Last Man(sic) Standing: that will be a test of my mental and physical fitness: my goal? 24hours, 24 × 4(and a little) mile laps = 100miles.
Achievable? Yes. Need to practice my walking techniques/walking speed.
Second goal: do the 24hr event again and stagger an extra lap…or 2?
I finished 2018 on a good note. Winter Star Ultra. 45miles. 7hrs 8mins… Over 55 mins faster than last year. 1st in age category and 8th overall….. perfect weather, cool and sunny with no rain….and my new Garmin 35 is working well!
Have a 12 hr fairly local event in 3ish weeks: will practice a bit of speed-walking during it.
Happy running to you.
I really do enjoy your vids as your enthusiasm…. intensity….shines through.
Every goal you described is a SMART goal. Every goal you described was in fact, so realistic that it happend. You’re wrong. In fact, I think that that’s a pretty negative outlook on life, to think that you would need to be dumb to achieve what you really want in life.
My concrete goal is to break 2:40 in the marathon. I am nearly 40 and been running consistently for about 27 months ❤️
Looking forward to see the warm up routine
Hmmm, I don’t think he know the difference between setting a mission e.g. flying to the moon and setting project goal (project management) connected with your mission e.g. build a space ship, source the materials, specialist and get the work done by a specific time.
Oh and I don’t want to pedantic, but we didn’t have to overcome time to get to the moon. Dr Who is not a documentary.
Thank you for this video, I was about to go remind myself about smart goals. Now watching this, I have remembered my big idea for the future. This video has given me q diffrent outlook on my tasks, and I want to re-focus on my dreams. Now as a teen I have learned more and more on how to do some of the things I am wanting to do in life, this video is helping point me in the right direction. Thank you for takeing the time to make this video.
My goal is to break 4 20 in the mile and 9 20 in the two mile. Training has been going good and everything, but I keep having Achilles problems no matter how much I stretch my calves and I keep having to take days off, any tips on fixing this?
Great video about the importance of goals, and what goals are. but if you added the difference between goals and objectives, the video would be even better. but above all, your style, tips and ethusiasm are uplifting!
It’s well educative and so easy to understand, Nice video and very
creative for anyone to easily understand the concepts and become
successful

Thank you! Finally someone step outside of the box and challenge this smart goal idea. I also hate Steven covey thing that everybody buys into. I also learn to not tell anyone about my goal. Everyone from my husband to my mom don’t believe that I can achieve it.
I believe you have some misconceptions to the reasons why SMART is used. Its a management tool within business to create structure and evaluate efforts. Furthermore, its a dynamic process that tries to increase effeciency. What you are talking about in this video are actions of visionaries, and people that are in the top 5% of interlectual thinkers. These people do exist and are achieving great things. However, to relate a business management tool to someones dreams and ambitions is irrelvant. Think big works well for innovation, however, its only an ability of a small proportion of the population.
I understand your point but not everyone is Martin Luther King. Most people struggle living their daily simple lives and setting SMART goals actually helps them getting things done. Those exceptional persons you mentioned didn’t need to set up goals, they were so exceptional that they had dreams driving their lives without almost needing motivation or planning. For most of us, average people, SMART goals are actually great.
Okay, I’m fairly new to Brendon and his stuff and this video caught my eye, for the fact that it slated SMART goals. Now a million studies have been done on goal setting, and results consistently show that setting goals have positive effects. The size of the effect can depend on how emm… smartly, or how effective the goals set are. Again the evidence has proven SMART goals to be effective, they give something of a framework in to how set goals that will help you achieve bigger, or faster results and improvements. Nonetheless, I’m very much open to new and innovative thinking, so I was keen to see what he had to say.
So Brendon went with a different acronym, DUMB goals, obviously making the point that we shouldn’t simply subscribe to what the popular SMART method suggests, and that’s fine. While effective SMART goals have been proven to work, simply getting reverting to “in the box” and “completing the checklist” thinking is something we need to be wary of. In DUMB, I do like the D, and U. It’s good for goals to be exciting, so thinking big, going after dreams and picking uplifting goals, these sort of things are absolutely the sort of things that will inspire and motivate us to take the action to reach our goals. Though that’s not to say SMART goals don’t implement these, or at the very least that they can’t. There is nothing wrong with dreaming big, the challenge is that it can be disheartening if the goal we want to reach is seemingly a million miles away, which can result in people giving up, especially if they hit a bump or setback in their progress (very common). This is where setting short, medium and long-term goals is advantageous. By setting goals that are attainable in the short term that help us improve, we get closer to the long term dream. We also get uplifteda boost when we reach the targets set, whether that’s 2 minutes off a 10k race, finishing a module in the course we are doing, or hit a sales target. This gives us confidence, motivation and belief to push on towards that big dream goal (completing a marathon, getting a qualification, getting a promotion).
I fully agree with uplifting goals, though I wouldn’t say this is particularly radical or groundbreaking. Again, there is a wealth of literature that tells us that instructions should be positive, not negative. Typically people setting SMART goals know to set their goals in a positive mannerfocusing on what to do, move towards. That said, it’s not part of the SMART acronym, so this inclusion is a worthy part of the DUMB goal that helps us to remember to set us goals that will get us inspired/excited (although I have seen the Acronym “SMARTER” in which the E stands for exciting).
The M and B (in DUMB) I’m not crazy about. I don’t disagree with them, they just aren’t as clear or as concrete in terms of what we need to do. Okay, method based and behaviour driven, understoodbut these things don’t give me an instant feeling of “this is what I need to do”. Meanwhile in SMART goals, we can look at the goals we have set and quickly ask ourselves “is this a specific goal, can I measure this, what time frame am I working in””. There should be a method, a way of moving in the right direction, but the term Method-Based is too abstract and not specific enough for me. And on Behaviour Driven, goal setting is all about putting the framework in place to change our behaviour (that’s how we reach our goals), so setting behaviour driven as one of the fundamentals seems unnecessary. These parts of “DUMB” feel more to me like they are just filling in the letters in the (anti-SMART) acronym as opposed to serving an important and crucial purpose.
So overall, I like the part of the message that urges us to think big, get excited and to think outwith the parameters of “SMART”. Absolutely yes. But DUMB as a direct replacement to SMART? I’m afraid not for me. Principles such as being specific as to what you want to achieve, how you can measure your progress, whether the goal is achievable (and more importantly how to go about to achieving it), keeping records of your progress and having a time frame to do your stuff in are all worthwhile and beneficial things to think about and include when setting your goals. A lot of people will be uncertain of how to get maximum effectiveness from goal setting, there is a sizeable amount of groundwork to put in and you want to be effective with it, SMART goals will help the average person do that more than DUMB goals.
I’m interested in seeing more of Brendon’s vids, but coming from a sport psychology perspective, I wouldn’t go reinventing the wheel on this one.
Trying to go sub 2 in the 800m this season, this is gonna really help, thanks nick!
Awesome indeed……………..super enthusiastic……..Thanks for sharing.
Yay!! Happy New Year!! This year, I would like to acheive a sub 2:10 half marathon in April, PR Chicago Marathon in October, and complete the Dopey Challenge in 2020. Have a great time at Marathon Weekend! I so wish I could be there…
love smart goals! Every year we, as a family, write our goals/bucket list on a large piece of paper and hang it on the wall. We are reminded daily of what we set out to do and we get the satisfaction of checking things off the list! One of my goals is to get my running coach cirt., I know you are a running coach and was wondering how or where you received yours. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Happy New Year Heather! Castle to Chateau and 36k challenge and not to get injured are my goals for 2019.Have a great time at WDW next weekend! ♀️
I’m holding off on making any new running goals until after Marathon weekend when I meet my goal of running my first half marathon but I definitely want to do more races in 2019 than in 2018. I’ve already learned that I’m super motivated by bling so I want to find some races to do with really cool medals.
Technically a 2018 goal (but I guess that goes along with your statement that these can be made anytime?) but i’ll be completing my 5k to 26.2m in 365d challenge at the disney marathon: )
Jan of 2018 was my first 5k in over a decade. I might have ran a total of 50 miles in 2017. In 2018 I ran 1100+ building up to the 2019 Disney marathon! It just goes to show that if you can run a 5k you can train to do a marathon within a year.
Assuming my marathon goes well, I’d like to tackle a 50km trail run and possibly hit 1500 miles. Nothing “smart” yet until after Jan 13th though: ) I had wanted to do DOPEY but honestly it’s just not worth it to me. Not relevant I guess. While I could more than likely do dopey in 2020 Id much rather do goofey and save the money from hotels and the other two races lol. Stephanie and I are doing the StarWars Kessel and Rival challenge this year too so thats fun.
Love your videos, Heather. Thanks for being such a great encouragement to the running community!
Now see, I just want to run all the races, so my goal is to show some restraint. Some. Boy is that going to be hard. But my other goals are to… run 1,000 miles this year, PR my full marathon and my 10K, possibly PR my half or 10 miler time for a better corral placement for a future WDW full/dopey. And to have lots of fun running and maintain the joy that running brings me.
Greetings,
I am a professional transcriptionist willing to join your project with your cooperation and according to your instructions.
Thank you
Thank you for the video! I’m doing my goalsetting at a good way ✔️… the why is so important! Happy New Year to you and yours Heather…
This year’s goals include 1) 2 marathons, Pittsburgh in the spring and hopefully Marine Corps in the fall, and 2) 1000 miles for the year.
I love your attitude and I don’t want to detract from your message, but I think you are mixing up business jargon.
KPIs are measurable performance indicators which can be trended over time. Businesses use KPIs to trend costs, manufacturing capability, etc. If you want to apply the concept to running, then an example might be VO2 max which you can track pretty frequently. Resolution is important for KPIs. Selecting race shoes is a good milestone, but not a KPI because it is a single event and not possible to trend. Setting specific milestones is also a good idea for achieving a desired goal, so I’ll give you a mulligan.
If you get to sub 11 any possibility of an #OlyTrials entrance? #800
I’ve been following most of the best known middle distance runner’s carreer since I fell in love and practiced this beautiful sport, and I can’t believe that you’re sharing your experiences with us!!! I’m a huge fan of yours so thanks a lot for doing this…
Greetings and best wishes from Costa Rica!!!
Happy new year, Heather! So my running goal I’m looking at is a full marathon…I’m on the edge of upping the half I’m signed up for in October to the full… I’ll know for sure after Princess in February to make 100% sure it’s on (and spoiler: I am leaning towards the full!).
You can do the sub 10sec.100m Nick! I’ll keep watching your progress.
Taking inventory is a huge first step! So many of us set out on a running journey without being honest about our current state. Great tips!!!
I am an amateur soccer player. how can I run fast is there any tips
Because we do the one doesn’t mean we can’t do both. As long as we’re moving forward, yes?
Hi Ian, you brought up some very valuable insights in this video. My wife/coach insists that I start doing time trials and shorter distance races after I recover from CIM. I scoffed at the idea at first, but I soon realized I’m completely untested at anything shorter than the half. I’m stoked to try these time trials now! I agree with you that there should be an effort and mindfulness to be a balanced athlete. So, I’m relieved that my coach isn’t completely leading me astray.
Otherwise, I like your three tier goal setup. I only have a two tier goal list, which seems to put a lot more pressure on me from an expectation standpoint. My A goal (top) for CIM is within a minute or two from 2:40. My B goal is a sub 2:45. My B goal is driven by my desire to run either Berlin or Tokyo as my second marathon along with my first Boston in 2020/2021. Best wishes to you and your running endeavors in 2020!
My 2020 goals:
Sub 2:40 marathon
Sub 1:17 half
10K no clue
5K no clue
1 mile I hope sub 5
800m no clue
400m no clue. Ah the joy of being a dumb endurance runner!
Actually, you know nothing about the March on Washington. Look into history. You will find that the March was SMART and included activities meant to achieve the legislative outcome.
Glad to see another video from you. I’m in my first ever training cycle and I’m going for sub 1:50 in half marathon. I’d be quite happy if I hit 1:45. I think I’m scheduled to race in Feb, but it will be a personal race and not anything official. Just trying to get in decent shape. I’ve had the goal of a 6min mile for a few years but never trained for it. I think they may be my goal after the half. Cheers.
YouTube wouldn’t let me link LettrClub in the video! Visit LettrClub.com to learn more.
Idk that you could be a bison, a G.O.A.T and a bird at the same time
No specific goals for me yet. I have Dopey #3 coming up very soon. With that I just want to have fun and enjoy the races. Beyond that I am not signed up for any races yet. I want to find and run more local races. I haven’t done much in terms of local races and want to run at least 2 through this year. Happy New Year!
You and Centrowitz should have had a race over 1150/1200 in 2013.
Sounds nice but people take your dreams and make your life a nightmare just for LOLs. If you have no goals or dreams people can’t shit on them.
Hello Brendon. I’m been following you for quite sometime now and have learned so much! Now it came to my attention that your videos don’t have any captions for people that don’t understand English. I’m trying to share your videos with my friends on the other side of the world but they can’t understand. Is there anyway you can add captions. Thanks
Nick, these videos help me set the goal to break 5 minutes in a mile. I am 33 and was a 4:20 miler in high school. Best of luck to you and thank you for all your inspiration.
Nick best of luck with this challenge. Had the pleasure seeing you compete in the Olympics.
Main goal for 2019 is to be debt free minus our car and house by 12/31. Running goals 2 more half marathons a 5k pr and a 10k pr. First Half and 10k are on the calendar. I’ve already bought my training plan for those 2; however, I will be in touch once that plan ends:-) hopefully you’ll still be taking clients in May!!
Any clue what 1:59 split times should be for the 800. If I get it it would be my school record.( My school isn’t too good at distance running) Also my time last year was a 2:08 and I’m a junior. Any chance I could drop that much time this outdoor track season. (I’m currently doing swim for my school but still do weekend runs)
I respect Brendon’s success…but he’s creating a false dichotomy and silly argument. And likely just being a contrarian to put forth HIS solution as better. The SMART goal process is nothing more than a framework and process to help you think through your goal. Further, it’s not exclusively a left brain activity.
My goal is sub- 6:00 in the Mile which would be a PB at age 52. PS I see you’re getting you PPL and there was a pic of you in front of a Cirrus. Are you doing it in the Cirrus? I got mine last year in a C172 and then transitioned to the SR20. You’re going to really enjoy it. My flying goal this year is to get my Instrument and then transition to the SR22T:)
Love the videos! I’m trying to get back under 5 in the mile right now so this video has definitely helped me.
What’s going on Nick! Big fan here. No one big like yourself. What’s your opinion on recovering after a fasciotomy surgery? I’ve been healing for almost 2 months now. I still want to go 2:25 in the marathon and 14:20 in the 5k. Just don’t know where to find the patience after surgery. Also, it would be great to see you come down to Texas! I’ll be there waiting to get a autograph. Booya!!
Goal is to go sub 1:50 in the 800m I write it down everyday with all the marks I need to hit I’m so excited for the outdoor tack competitions to start
Hey Nick, just curious… when you were a professional at the height of your career (2012 Olympic final most epic race ever!) what was your 800m goal time??
I love your content, much humbleness from a olympic medalist, I used to be fat and chubby till i was 15, lost 40 pounds by running, I came to the United states as an exchange student on 2017 as a senior and ran track for the first time on January 2018 with a mile time 4:56, Now one year later am running for NCAA dII university and my first collegiate race will be on the 18th in texas tech, I’ll be running the mile which will be the 4th track race in my life, I really worked hard and hope i run under 4:30 do you think it’s possible considering my story and running 4:56 first time racing?
I want to break 1.54 this year and I got the speed but I gotta work on my endurance so any tips on that?
I just saved a smart goals video to send to a kid I’m coaching in sport and would have sent this video as well for balance, if he hadn’t kept saying sexy all through it.
MAYBE AFT. SOME HARD RUNNING….U CAN COME HOME N LOOK OUT THE WINDOW N SEE PREEE???
Ya know it may sound funny but I’m impressed a white man (like myself) ran a 1:42.9 (you). It a good indication that its not just your stereotypes running those insane times. I ran a 1:58 as a junior in hs. I’m in my senior year and my goal is 1:53 and to win state in Iowa in the open 800. I’m putting in the off season work so I hope to achieve my goals. Much respect.
My goal is to go sub 9:55 in the 2 mile and 4:35 in the mile. (Also im a hs sophomore).
This was a great video Nick! I cant wait to see your warm up! Dont leave out anything!!!!
Aggie Muster track meet should be open to non-NCAA athletes, one of the first meets in on the new Texas A&M track
My goals are to do my 1st half Marathon in April ( Star Wars weekend ), A stepping stone to dopey challenge fallowing year
Nick thank you so much, you are the most inspiring person I’ve ever seen. You really struck a chord in me. Brother, I’m also an Eagle Scout!
Because of you, I’m going to start building a brand of myself. I’m interested in doing something involving the outdoors; what first came to mind was backpacking. Right now I’m struggling to find a backpacking goal:/
Thanks to you, this is the first time I’ve ever had these thoughts!!!! I’m grateful for your videos, please keep it up!
Thanks for posting Nick. Im running a 4×8 followed by a 1600 in an upcoming meet. Thanks for the ideas with goal setting. I will be sure to write my goals down. Do you have any tips regarding racing strategies in the 8 and 16 and also how to recover between races?
Love the series! Is it sub 11 goal specifically hand timed or electric? I have my own goal for you. Sub 11.50. Am I allowed to do that? lol. What about getting a 60m time in practice or meet? Mine is 7.40s electric. But not sure exactly what that equates to for the 100m? My guess has always been 11.40-11.70s. The 60m time was indoor so no helping wind. You are very articulate and enjoyable to listen watch.
This guy is an idiot. I had too many dreams but not enough smart goals, now I’m in a hole
This is typical MBA style education fitting enough for low-class Managers.
As always, a great video. I love your 10,000 subs goal. You’re almost there Nick.
This is definitely the best SMART goals explanation I’ve ever watched on YouTube
I didn’t know you 3 days ago, and now I think I’ve discovered someone I’ll learn a lot from, thanks for posting such good content!
btw, speaking about the “tell someone” phase: 15’50” 5k before 07/31, sub 5’20” 400m freestyle before 08/31, sub 35 minutes 20k on the bike, and finally to find a pro runner/triathlete to become my mentor before 12/31, all of these goals are in order to become a profesionnal triathlete (even though I’m far from it, I know I will suceed because I do everything I can to improve everyday)!
Do you have any advice on breaking the 5 minute mile. I am currently in 9th grade.
You’ve gotta share your possible meet plans. I live around LA now. I’m training for the 100m this year. We are both former DIII NCAA champs (different events, of course). Former DIII champs face each other in the 100 somewhere, it would be classic! I’d even be willing to go to Eugene for it, but I’d need to figure out logistics/possible training plan for such a trip, as Ive got a lot of training basically planned for already and might need to readjust for that trip.
For all I know, it would be a GREAT race. I haven’t broken 11 since ’14. I dunno, sounds fun to me. Look me up, I ran DIII around the same time as you (last year was ’06).
Good luck with going sub 11! What’s on the framed sticky note on your bedside table?!
Primary goals are sub- 2:30 for 800m and sub- 5:30 mile at age 62 this year; my first week of this year was 63 miles with workouts. Secondary (harder) goal is to medal at USATF Masters this summer. Climbing goal is to be the oldest to first ascent 5.14 in sport climbing; getting pretty close on that one.
well done on another great video! i will be setting my 100 meters time on Thursday and then setting my goal! i only have middle distance spikes as well so i will be looking forward to your review on sprinting spikes
Thanks for sharing, NIck! Those are great tips to have when trying to achieve goals. I agree with writing down goals. I have a dry erase board by my desk, where I wrote down my half marathon goal. I had it broken out by mile pace and overall time. That way every time I sat at my desk, it was in my face and helped keep me focused.
Do you happen to know what your fastest 100m split was during another race in your career?
Before winter goal-keep at 70-110 mpw, then constant snow, slush/ice cycle. New goalslippy/sliddy attempts and how many times can I fall?
I find Smart goals pointless & inflexible. To each their own. I always go by vision & flow. Great vid Brendon.
this goofball confuses dreams with goals. people should dream and think big, but once you have your dream, setting smarts goals is how you will get there. He just wants to sell you his dumb method versus the smart method which accomplish the same thing.
great video as always, aprreciate it!:) btw, you and your videos inspired me moving up from 400 to 800-1500m, and now u are moving down, lol ;D
Great vid. I’m aiming to go under 3:30 in my first ever marathon but,if I see my training goes well I may chose to, as per your video, risk it and get as close to 3:00 as possible.
Thanks for this video Nick! I have goals to run 48 seconds for the 400m and run a 1:55 second 800m this season (ends April). Despite having attained some extremely impressive accolades throughout your career your desire to push yourself to the max makes me feel the need to work harder. Keep up the great work!
I wanna break 17 in the 5k. I’ve never written a goal down. Thanks for tip!
Do you think I could be a sub 15 runner in two years if my pb is 18.22 at 17 years old?
volume is low compared to previous video. but still really appreciate it.
Reminds me of the book by Ken Kesey “Sometimes A Great Notion” where they carved never give a inch in the headboard.
The SMART metodoly doesn’t say you can set high. It says that, doesn’t matter your goal, you must plan how to get there.
Tbh, ur prolly gonna break that 10k sub goal in about a month or even less. Also, this was a great & helpful vid!
The previous race is like fun to you you are good all rounder…..but nice lines comming from you and my goal is to bring 1.55 my 800m time.. we are working together
This is just superb, been searching for “smart goal setting in sport” for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across Xiyvery Pandalyn Rule (do a google search )?
It is a smashing one of a kind guide for understanding one simple trick to easily get success in your life minus the headache. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my colleague got great results with it.
I think it’s not enough to set a balanced score card to get good results. It is good to implement enterprise risk management to ensure a good results and don’t lose time in re-evaluating your process with no clue in the source of failure
I love it all!
So refreshing and inspiring to listen to you.
You will achieve ALL of your goals!
You are a smart cookie not too shabby!
Just ordered some gum and I think you’ll be hitting 10,000 in no time! We need to get rid of some sticky notes otherwise you’ll have them all over your headboard.
I don’t agree with this. Goals are broad aims you what to achieve. Objectives are specific and have clearly defined milestones that must be achieved to reach your goal. More that one objective may need to be achieved to reach goal.
I found it weird how did our teacher explain and talk about SMART for two hours and I didn’t get it, and amazingly your 3 minutes video was pretty clear to me that I understood it!!!
Than you a lot!!!
The older video explaining smart goals was way better. It explained smart goals in a clearer and more in depth way. Why did you make it private?
Thanks for sharing and welcome to Masters track:). According to MastersRamkings.com, an 11.0 seconds 100 meter would put you in the top ten in the US in the 35-39 age group (would have been #8 in 2018).
We use it with the following terms: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound, and it works pretty well.
Dude you remind me a little bit of a preacher lots of schmooze but the high wears off. Dreams are great but the journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.
Awesome! I’ve learned, a ton from your vids over the years, and applied that knowledge to multiple organizations with great success.
A very helpful video!
Glad you are back guys, helped me in 2008, helping me in 2016.
Greetings from Peru.
