If you’re new to beach running, start out on wet, firm sand — it’s much easier to run on than the soft, dry sand. Low tide is a great time to try running on the beach. You can slowly add 2 or 3-minute intervals on the softer sand, with longer recoveries on the wet sand. As you get used to the dry sand, you can start running on it for longer stretches.
If you want to run barefoot on sand, you also shouldn’t run too fast or too frequently because you might get injured. In order to build strength in your feet, start with short runs, just 15 to 20 minutes. Gradually increase five minutes in each run when your body adapts.
“By putting in mileage on the sand, you’’ll put less stress on your weight-bearing joints, such as your hips, knees, and ankles, which can help decrease the risk of impact-associated injuries like.Stay close to the edge of the water without getting your feet wet. Some beaches have extremely low tides and allow more room away from the edge of the water to run and still be on packed sand.
A high tide leaves soft, dry sand, which is kindest on the legs, but it’s also much harder to power through (it makes 10-minute miles feel like speed work). When you’re driving on the sand, avoid sharp corners. Wheels trying to turn take a lot more to push through the sand than ones going straight.
In theory, running barefoot on sand should be better for your joints since it allows the balls of your feet to land first rather than your heels. How to Clean a Concrete Pathway Without Harming the Surrounding Grass. These are all rough approximations, of course. Just work up to near-full intensity. Would you recommend a road cyclist use beach running as cross training to help build the different muscles, while keeping the damage on the joints minimal?
This really helped. I run a lot, so the arch of my foot aches sometimes.
I run 5 miles on the beach almost every day. Outer Banks N.C
Not certain about the points made but,if anyone else is searching for foot pain relief try Alkarno Foot Pain Alchemist ( search on google )? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate got great results with it.
Ocean Beach! I was just there! Running on the beach kicked my ass, and I was compelled to lose the shoes so I ran back carrying them. A must for any runner who has the means.
I am running the Oregon Coast 50k, which starts with a 10k beach run. Advice on shoe choice? Road, trail or barefoot?
You should come to California for the Superfrog http://m.ironman.com/triathlon/events/americas/ironman-70.3/superfrog/register.aspx
This is a pain that all track and field sprinters go through. Great video to educate yourself.
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!! Now, after 5 years, I know what is going w my arch!!! I had a feeling it was not plantar fasciitis – and I couldn’t find anything like this until I found your video! I have literally like a bumpor maybe a mass of scar tissueAnd the lump or bump is literally right underneath the ball of my foot under my first toe! Oh my gosh it’s been killing me for like the last five years I have no idea what it is… And now thanks to you I finally know what it is – now the question is what can I do to get the scar tissue out?!
Blisters on my feet after just 3 miles. Small crushed shells etc….not good.
But won’t you get sand in your shoes? I hate that. I’ll take my shoes off before I reach the beach, sit down, brush them off, socks and shoes, and run on a hard surfaced beach during low tide.
I have this pain since 5(I think) and it is only in my right foot and sometime the muscle vibrate to.
Crap, i’ve been running on the stone beach since i was a kid, every other day tho. I don’t run far, because its hard work and i don’t have waste time on long runs!! 20 mins is easy!
Not certain about the points made but,if anyone else is searching for pain side of foot try Jadonite Plantar Treatment Buddy (just google it )? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my neighbor got great results with it.
I ran on the beach last week and now my right leg hurts. This morning I stopped just after 20 minutes because of the pain. What should I do? I usually run every morning 6 days a week for 45 minutes
The only channel completely dedicated to running. I love this channel dedication.
I am here because one of the police academy test is to run on sand while carrying a 7 kilo ball under 33 sec
Used to run barefoot in every kind of sandy terrain and even the edge between the water and sand (actually mostly in the waves) and I have one advice to give: beware rocks and metal junk!
Just ran 3 miles on the beach barefoot and got horrible blisters.
I just did it, absolutely horrible.. wear shoes.. this will lead to blisters quickly!!
Should you take a break from running if you have this or can you message it and keep running?
i ONLY run barefoot on the beach, never on roads or sidewalk. 6km, 2x/week w/ hiit and/or other calisthenics included. Smart to run at low tide, but even smarter to use the ankle deep water as a form corrector and as an impact absorber, and of course as a coolant for your feet!
great advice and info, love the shirt too, where can I get them shirts? Cheers
Do you have any suggestions for me? I’m going to put a sand track/ trail in my back yard.
I always love running on the beach for extended periods of time and climbing sand dunes. Feels super natural and makes me feel awesome. Just running with the flow going into the water from time to time. Absolutely goregous experience.(Camping at a beach is a pretty fun experience).
Anyone who is worried about running barefoot on the beach, just wrap tampons around your feet first..
I think running on soft sand is great for my calf and foot muscle development. Running on a long straight beach can develop mental strength if you have to run to the end of the beach without stopping knowing how long you have in your sight all the time.
He doesn’t look very fit to be a marathon runner. Anyway, thank you for the advices!!
Oh and by the way I was a gymnast my entire life competitive, and then competed in college -as well! But the real arch pain started after I ran a marathon with my sister in 2010… And I start running after that and maybe a year or so later the pain came and never went away. I also was a fitness director at Kraft foods and taught classes like Zumba, Spin, Weighting, Boot Camp, etc. I was listening how you said to kind a massage and then move the muscle while you’re massaging? I just had a hard time understanding how to do that…Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Just ran 5 miles barefoot on the beach in 45 minutes with my XC team. Absolutely amazing while you’re running, but hell when you get home.
Running on the beach or running on the road… which do you prefer?
This is a great informational video, but what if you’re experiencing pain, like me, at the muscle directly below the ball of the big toe towards the arch near the medial head/sesamoids?
I’ve been experiencing this pain for a while from dancing.
Thanks for the video, that is the exact spot I hurt last week while running. I have plantar placeitis but have worked thru the early pain part. This pain just came on the other day about 30 minutes into my run. After your video I’m guessing I need to go to a foot doctor or physical therapist? Would love any inisght into this. Thank you in advance.
2:52 at high and low tide you might get cut off for fishing.
Run barefoot.
Run on the soft sand only
Stay on level ground as much as possible
Been running on the beach for more than 10 years. Very little injury

Is it bad if you keep running if you have Abductor Hallucis Pain? Because it only hurts after 5km and an hour after my run but then goes away. Walking is fine however.
Always happens for me in the morning when I wanna go for a rub
I had this pain for a week now. The pain is going away. Should I start to run or continue to rest?

Got a friend that had a bone broken is right foot and It healed, but she still has pain when walking too much on her foot. What would you suggest? Chiropractic, sports medicine, or some other form of therapy. She has being doing PT (therapy) but it’s not helping her much at all. Many thanks, P.S you really look like Christian Bale..
