Basic common sense needs to prevail so yes, not attending large crowd events if in the risky range is a good idea.

Wise words Sage. I know the frustration well, here in HK got the marathon cancelled last month and I was so ready to race in but.. kind of a bummer but well, there will be other races in the near future. Trying to keep up the good work, enjoying the workout and staying healthy.
Expert still dont know where this virus come from or its an invisible gas. Very little is known and the covid19 is still keeping the expert hunting for cure. This virus is intelligent, it hide, it learn and it can mutate. It hide itself in your body and attack when the host it most vulnerable. So early check up may not review symptoms or test maybe negative.
So for your whole safety and the safety of others, please stay at home.
I was going to asked this, i live here in Paris 7th. I went back from jogging before the pandemic and now have to stop again. I felt suffocated and depress in my small apartment. I’ve tried home exercise but i doesn’t suit me, it feels different when you sweat a lot but i am scared to go for a run since there’s a lot of COVID19 cases here. Any advice? Thanks

It might not be a good idea to work as a uber driver at the present time because you never know who you going to pick up, he or she might be a potential coronavirus asymptomatic carrier.

I trained for a 1/2 marathon, but the event had to be cancelled due to forest fire affecting air quality, I just ran at easy pace on my own on event day, since I had already prepared for it, no issue whatsoever. Just keep moving.

This is awesome advice. I actually just posted a vid where I designed a 5k for just my family and it was honestly a lot of fun despite it not being a real race. It was a good way to keep the spirits up:)

I think the biggest issue here is ourselves,
we’ve seen all over the world, cases and deaths sky-rocketing. Yet people in this trying times still want to go outside. EVEN now! Tell me. Is it the govt fault this people want go out? We should be grateful govt haven’t restrict our movement. As normal civilians, it is our duty to protect our homeland. Regardless of what experts say, it is up to us to save this country. The power is in the people according to democracy anyway

I understand the other commenter saying that running can be crippling, but obviously that is not true for many people. I did hurt my knee from running about 6 years ago, and I even stayed away from playing tennis that summer. A doctor did an MRI, and said I have arthritis, but then he said that 50% of people over 50 have some arthritis. He set me up to get a cortizone shot, but I did research, and I decided not to get the cortizone shot, because all it does is cover up symptoms/pain. I know the power of diet, and I improved my diet eating mostly whole foods-plant based while walking a few miles regularly. I really thought I would never run again, but gradually I came back to 100%. I started running again, and I run 3-4 miles twice or 3 times a week along with calisthenics. I adopted a shorter running stride with a higher cadence (180 steps a minute roughly) according to a youtube video, and adjusting posture minutely as well as breathing. Where as I used to run an 8- 8:30 minute mile I have slowed down to maybe a 10 minute mile with this higher cadence, but I gain the same benefits. There is less stress on knees as I am not extending as far. Be careful not to make running a compulsive thing. You are much more likely to get an injury that way. The style of running that I do gives me the same degree of cardiovascular benefits as well as other rewards. Look up negative pressure (on joints) while running. I rarely run more than 10 miles a week. I did run 18 miles in one week which is absolute max for me. People can get in trouble with the Superman complex. The next thing you know they run a marathon, and many years later they need both knees replaced. That happened to my father. He ran 12 marathons in his 50’s…Take Care!

I had been training for the NYC half marathon since November under a new training plan. My training was going so well that it looked I was poised for a 3 minute PR. Sucks that the race got canceled, but now I have confidence in the quality of the training I’ve been doing!
Some with this ‘expert’ nonsense. 1 month ago, these ‘experts’ also say no need wear masks if you are ok, but now all need to wear.
Now, only walking need masks, exercising no need. Bruh???? Isn’t exercising produce more saliva droplets because you are panting? Why no need mask? If you can’t wear masks while running, then don’t run. Not exercising for 1 month will die ah?
And as for those who can’t breathe properly with a mask, you all never experience wearing MOPP 4 carrying field pack and run around the tracks, don’t be gu niang.
I remembered some experts also said that risk of infection from transient contact, meaning in public transport, or while shopping, is “very low”. But yet there was an outbreak in Mustafa, and now go out must wear mask, practise social distancing, even get fined. So believe these “experts” at your own peril.

Geneva hasn’t been canceled yet but probably will at the rate things are going. Really disappointed since it’s my first half and also my first time really training for a race. At least I have access to a treadmill in case the German government issues a general home quarantine lol.

I enjoy your video. It is very educational. You show much more intelligence, common sense, and compassion then some runners that just show their frustration. Personally, I enjoy my training runs as much as the races themselves. For me, the races are not really necessary but just a confirmation of what i already know from my training. I am healthy, first and foremost that we are all healthy.

I listened to one of runner doctors. He warned about after run effects that period after race or long run, our immunity system will drop.It may be to risky to fight Virus.
Here in Italy we are in a lockdown situation and things are definitely hard. We are not allowed to go out except to go to work or to buy food. We must be ready to declare the reason we are out to police officers. Shops are closed and there are long rows outside food markets. Running and walking is still allowed but we must stay at least 1 meter far from each other.
I try to maintain my fitness routine doing some exercises at home because it keeps my mind healthy, since I work in an ICU. If the mind is healthy even the body will be stronger.
Please be safe! Do whatever you can to avoid this situation we are living right now!

I am from Hong Kong, for some of you who may not know where it is, a small city beneath mainland China where the virus exploded. I’d like to talk about my running in this tough time though it would be a little bit long.
At first in late January I started to run with a face mask, when we’re told not to go out unless necessary (because I didn’t want to stop for anything but only injuries). But later I found that running with a mask was a bad idea, not because of the breathing, but because the functionality of the mask will decline when it gets wet, and they are not designed for intensified breathing. Most importantly, I had to save some masks for my family. There was a shortage of face masks within the whole city and every mask was so valuable that even if you had queued up for 5, 6 hours, you still got nothing because there had been already so many people in front of you. I could not waste masks like that.
Reading the news everyday I saw the number of infected skyrocketed, I felt hopeless and fear, overwhelming fear. This fear actually stopped me from tying up the running shoes when I was doing it. Heavy rains never had this power, nor summer storms, nor midnight times, nor sleepless nights. Due to the fear I stopped running for a week, even though I had plenty of time to run, sunny cool great weather outside, a pair of fresh legs everyday. I was depressed and thought about life every night before bed. What is the most important to me in my life? What is my goal in this life? How to live my life fully? How to be the real me, for I aware of the knowledge that I can only live ONCE? Then one morning I woke up and came up with an answer and I wrote that down on my running diary “For the sake of freedom, I will not be controlled by Fear anymore.”
I ran that morning, and I did not carry a mask. I said to myself “The virus is out there, bring it on, I will still run anyway.” Life is a gift. But if I just let fear reign, life becomes a punishment. There’s no word to describe how I felt about that run. I mean the sight was the same, birds and trees, sky and sea. What made the difference was your decision to conquer something deeply inside, controlling you without your consent. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t care about anything since then. I ran on small, nearly empty roads, at quiet times to avoid people. And I started to stay away from news and media from time to time to keep my inner peace, because well…there’s no good news nowadays when I turn on the TV everyday. Besides, I pretty sure media was a “fear amplifier” for me for the last two months.
The experts in infectious disease told us that the virus is mainly transmitted by droplets, direct contact and in air-tight space. You run lonely outside, don’t touch anything and disinfect your hands after your run and you should be alright. I believe most of us won’t stop just because of races being cancelled. We keep running because we have found the intrinsic values of long distance running. Keep running and stay motivated in hard times. Hope the world get better soon.

Great video Sage:) I’m currently training for a local marathon that was scheduled for April 25th. I think I will just continue my training block and then have my own marathon on a local trail. We could all do virtual marathons too. The good news is, nobody is alone. It’s a real bummer but we get the privilege of being fit and able to run!

For crying out loud: You won’t die just because you can’t exercise for a month during this partial lockdown, but you could die when you exercise outside and got infected and spread to other people. Look good and fit not the priority here; not getting infected and die and potentially spread to other top priority. Sure you grow fat here and there in your waistline during this period without exercise is that really a BIG DEAL? Are you working in the porn industry or are you a model that you need to stay fit and pretty al the time? Give me a break. You can exercise indoor and get back in good shape after the lockdown. All outdoor exercise SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED during this partial lockdown period

ARE U SERIOUS???..Why is this so called Expert encouraging people to exercise outdoor when the dormitories cluster issue not settled in fact cases is growing daily.. Do we need to have another cluster to grow and then start panicking again… Please stop being a “Child” in the middle of serious outbreak SG is curently facing… I suggest strongly to get the real Expert from South Korea, Germany or New Zealand to handle our crisis here and contain the virus immediately.

I run outdoor but I avoid to run with somebody. I just run alone and in open field. I also avoid to run more than 10k to avoid overtraining and weaken my immune system. I run 5k to 8k just to maintain my fitness.
I feel like I’m not the only one who struggles to motivate myself to exercise alone, team accountability is huge, so it sucks that covid is threatening/limiting this…
The way I see it, you can still enjoy running on your own without having to be involved in any official events! This takes away the trouble of having to travel and the risks associated with it and yet you still enjoy the benefits of running! The race events will still be there at a later time but it’s important that you’re able to eventually be there also!
Just watched this after watching Seth DeMoor’s ‘COVID-19 episode’ and I think your approach and information was much better. This is a serious issue and isn’t something that we should take lightly. It’s not an overblown issue. People are at serious risk. We may have zero or low risk, but plenty others out there could easily be killed by this virus. Thanks Sage

Stay indoors as much as possible. Singapore is a small space, if many people exercise outdoors, then social distancing is pointless.

You know how credible the “experts” are when your common sense tells you otherwise. They keep trying to change your common sense with “expert” tips. In these difficult times when the authorities are trying to downplay the severity of the issue, trust your own common sense.
People around the world are rarely doing outdoor activities because of corvid-19 and yet Singapore is encouraging people to do so, are you guys not afraid to be ridicule by the rest of the world?
They close the beach but allow joggers to crowd the pathway….

I would say, experts have been proven wrong before. Observe people moving around outdoors, especially near or inside parks. 60% are wearing masks, 40% are not. Those who are not wearing masks, are either cycling, running, pretending to run, or are simply trying to make an exhausted looking face, showing they are out of breath. Do you not realize we are in a global pandemic? If you are not infected, and do not wear a mask outside, you can catch the virus, even if you think the chances are low. If you are infected (asymptomatic) and are out there running and cycling, you can spread the virus through droplets, and these droplets are carried in your own slipstream (read up on this). You often see runners huffing and puffing, or without shirts, sweating profusely… this cannot be 100% safe (these were the same droplets that spread the virus earlier in gyms). To those who are making up all these rules, and for the sake of our collective health/safety, Please try to imagine a scenario where a hundred, or even a thousand asymptomatic (or yet to be tested) dorm workers running around your neighborhood without masks (even if they’re 2 meters apart). There’s nothing stopping this. The govt should consider a blanket rule on mask wearing, and not bend backwards to justify outdoor exercise. Remember, fitness does not mean immunity to this deadly virus.
My question is can I go out and make a run for 30 minutes and go back to my house without touching anybody?
Remember this virus started from just 1 person.. just need 1..

“Expert say” again. I recall it was also an “expert say” situation about those who are not sick do not need to wear a mask.. Look at now? Everyone is required to wear mask.
Can you guys please kindly name each and every “experts” that say things of such nature so we can all give the “credits” that is due and call him/her out for being such an “expert”?
If not, words of such nature carries no weight at all doesn’t it? Seems like anyone can claim to be an expert and speak nonsense that has absolute zero logic.

This is pure stupid. Why walkers need to wear a mask while runners don’t???? Those runners tend to breath heavier, if they are infected, they will release more droplets than walkers. And all the ppl pass by or run after them will be more likely infected. There are many ppl jogging in the park connector, the jogger density is really high as compared to HDB area. Pls just walk with mask, and STOP jogging!!!!
Expert say bla bla bla… and see how the case rising up less than 1.5 weeks the amount double up and the spike is 730++ cases. Facts dont lie.

Half marathon next weekend got cancelled which is disappointing, but as long as the full in May doesn’t get cancelled I won’t get too upset
I don’t train for an marathon race but its becoming more habitual and a hobby to me.
I went to walk down the river yesterday, expecting it to be empty since it was my first time outside in a month, and found the path busier than I’ve ever seen it. We’re doomed

Thank you for this, Sage! I’m starting to realize the possibility that my first ever marathon (the Vermont Marathon in May) may be cancelled. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t other great races further in the future that I can make my first marathon. You’ve helped put things in perspective.

One thing I do now, is to not run when I have a cold. I usually always do that and end up develop bronchitis. Now zero running until completely healthy.

Here in Italy I can’t even get put of the House!! I’ve been doing a bunch of tabatas, loads of burpees, some aerobic training and basically muscle workouts (squats, lunges, jumps)….BUT I NEED TO RUN
Thanks Dr. Chris for this! Here in Japan, we are requested to use masks inside sports gyms. But outdoors, I think there is no need. Especially nowadays that weather here becomes so hot and humid. Very prone to heatstroke or collapse:)
I think def no. Unless your exercising by yourself in an area with no people around. If there are people around wear a mask and keep your distance. The virus spreads through saliva and sweat so avoid if possible rubbing shoulders with someone who could be contaminated. The virus does its best work in group/crowd situations.

Low chance does not mean no chance.
A small number of people could be infected even on a low probability, as an infected person jogging or brisk walking without a mask would be leaving a trail of breath laden with virus, and infecting people without masks all along the way.
You wear a mask to protect yourself, as well as others.
No need to wear masks when running, cycling or doing brisk walking, but do not think inward, of yourself only, look out for those who you are passing.
But 2 months ago, LHL, CCS, the Task Force and MOH also REPEATEDLY said no mask is necessary if we are feeling well! So how sure are you all this time? Heavy breathing while running no need mask and it is safe?? Walking and strolling mask up or get fined?? If only I could find a way of getting this detail to the international news media and see what other experts have to advise!!

How long can a runner peak? I mean if a race is cancelled and rescheduled after 2 months? Can a runner sustain that peak level for 2 or more months?
My other question…if a race got postponed for 2 months, does that mean you can get better because you have 2 more months of training time for the race?
The NYC 1/2 Marathon got canceled. When I read that email and when it sunk in realizing I won’t be competing in NYC this next weekend, it was like I was in the Marine Corps all over again. JUST BENT OVER A TABLE getting BEAMED in the cheeks with a Barb Wire Rod for year’s on end.

Thank you for this. So agree with everything you’ve said. Was due to run rotterdam marathon on 5th April but it has been postponed and am glad. Simply because need to be careful about my immediate family and community. Health first! The will be other races later in the year or next year. Take care and keep up the good work.
