How to Run Longer Distances Overview. As you try to push your limits, you are likely to face both physical and mental obstacles. This is a normal Always Warm-Up. Begin with a brisk walk or slow jog to increase body temperature and get your joints ready for.Gradually build up your distances each time you run.
If you have never run before start at 1 kilometer (0.62 mi). When you can comfortably run that, try to go a little farther. Gradually increase to 5 kilometers (3.1 mi), then 10 kilometers (6.2 mi). Continue to push yourself until you achieve your distance. The Basics of Running Longer When you’re ready to run longer distances, it naturally follows that you’ll want to add more distance to your daily and/or weekly long runs.
In marathon training, we often talk about heeding the 10% rule – that is, not.Check your running form. Before you aim to run longer, it’s a good idea to make sure you’ve mastered the basics.
Using awkward form might not make a difference when you’re only running a couple of miles, but when you add more time and mileage your running form makes a bigger difference. Pump your arms and take comfortable strides. If you normally run an eight-minute mile on the treadmill at the end of your strength training workout, change it up. Go outside, take 10 minutes to run that mile instead of eight, and actually try to enjoy it. Running slow isn’t just an exercise to help you learn.
The Rule: Build up to and run at least one 20-miler before a marathon. “Long runs simulate the marathon, which requires lots of time on your feet,” says running coach Gina Simmering-Lanterman. “And.In general, you are aiming for steady, stairstep-style increases in your mileage, with occasional dropdowns, for maximum results in your long distance running. For beginning runners, your mileage can increase by 20-25% each week.
So, if you’re running three or four miles on your long run, you can safely add a mile or so each week to that run.Taking your speed down a notch or two gives you energy to go longer. Add about two minutes to your usual pace. For example, if you usually run three miles in.Run one long run per week to avoid losing your endurance.
Start with the longest distance you can run right now. Each week or two, add a mile or two to this distance. If you’re training for a race over 6 miles, increase the distance until you’ve reached 80 to 90 percent of the distance of your goal race.Your breath can have a huge impact on your ability to run long distances like a 5K or a 10K. Make sure you are breathing in and out of your nose, or in through your nose and out through your mouth, depending on your preference.
A steady breath means a steady heart rate and a.On top of that, your running form in general may be outta whack and really killing your long distance runs. When it comes to distance running, Moore says that, “ Any movement that your body makes while you run, that is not forward, is a waste of energy.Long, slow distance runs are pretty self-explanatory-that means running longer distances at an easy pace.
Your heart rate should stay under 150, and you can most likely hold a conversation. Strength training (consistently) is key to preventing injury, even if you’re not doing. If you’re just starting out, take it easy and go no longer than just a mile or so at a time in the beginning. As you get more comfortable, expand the mileage bit by bit until you find yourself.
When in doubt, run fewer repetitions with longer recoveries. Play it safe! Doing 1–2 of these workouts per week is all you need to gain the power, efficiency and speed benefits. They’re not a focus, but rather a supplemental training tool that’s available to work on an oft-neglected area of fitness for distance runners.
You can also undo or redo changes to your route. To remove a point, shift-click or drag it to the trash button that appears while dragging. Right-click or long-tap on a point or segment for more options.
On The Go Map calculates the distance of your route as you create it. Click the distance display to switch between miles and kilometers.

sir please answer I’m from India…..I did my first long distance run….and the next morning and even today my muscle and leg hurts..
I have become pretty much addicted to my morning run lol. I believe running long runs make u mentally stronger
Eating before a run is the worst i did the same mistake and while running for a 8km run I almost puked and my stomach was soo uncomfortable
my only problem when i run is that i have exercise induced asthma. i can run just fine and keep going but i start to wheeze.
I need to run 5.8 km. Off-road, uphill, carrying a load of 15 kg on by back, within 48 minutes. Bless me good luck guys. That’d be the hardest race of my whole life. I guess
NAH mate…i run for 10 sec and my back fking give out lol how you expect me to run for 20 miles lol
So what do you recomend? Shoes with shock absorbers or barefoot shoes with little absorbation pad
Great video. Very enthusiastic and positive personality. That will help you when running!!
I had 2 apples in beer form and a burger and pooped before I ran for the first time in 5 years. I feel like death but fuck it I made it.
great video and all, but what i am curious about is, was the cameraman on a car? bicycle? or levitating?
How does he still keep talking? He makes it look sooooo easy
i have to run 4 miles soon and that’s not even a long distance but i’m fucking dreading it and idk why
squatting behind a road bush on a night run is a moment when you wish you didn’t have on the brightest gear humanly possible
Good advice… I use the treadmill so number 2 is close by if I have to
#askGTN: I notice Mark’s foot contact point to the ground is front of the foot like sprinter run. Is there some kind of benefit?
what if u run home for poop…nd someone is already in the bathroom
Super good content and well explained. Digestion tips make all sense, as well as the importance of being in tune with our body! Helpful as I have started running seriously, so all tips are welcome!
Keep up
P.O.V: You want to win your school cross country so your watching this video
Thank for the tips i think this maybe help me and the mile run at school pe
This is just superb, I’ve been looking for “tips on how to get faster” for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of Ralebney Running Recoilless (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now )? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my brother in law got excellent results with it.
I run a 6:15 mile and I was 2nd in the county were I am from for girls and 3rd over all. I want to be first this year, this video really helped me. thx.
Just found your youtube video and discovered like everyone else apparently a picture of being sat on a toilet is massive click bait haha
I came for the tips and stayed for a good laugh. These comments are wild, man!
Maybe someone can relate to this, and give some advice or feedback. I am 54 years old, getting back to running, but now I find that instead of being able to run further, I feel heavy in the legs. I am not obese, only slightly overweight, about 5-7 lbs. I don’t feel tired necessarily, but have no energy and feel, well, just plain heavy-legged. Any idea what I am experiencing? I have tried upping the carbs, but this didn’t seem to make a difference.
Cup of coffee black and glass of water 1/2 hour before nothing to eat as plenty of energy stored within the body…
I hold it in just in case I don’t get 1st place and decide to do a dirty pooey protest!!
I bought the Hoka One One Bondi 6 and all of a sudden your video shows up. Damn you Youtube!!
I can run super fast but I can’t do it for very long because I get a sharp pain in my side, multiple ppl told me to breath through my nose not my mouth
I was there on the Golden Gate bridge last year……lot of cyclists and runners were there…very nice.
Great information as usual, thanks for the wonderful video. I used to do 5K runs with great difficulty, I never bothered with heart rate zones until recently. Now by keeping to Zone 2 I am able to do 10K runs effortlessly, however the speed is less 6.1 Km/hr).
At this point should I be concerned about increasing the speed or increasing the running distance. FYI I am 45 years old, and on the obese side (95 KG).
Coach Holly, you’re the cutest! Thank you so much for these tips. I want to be a runner, and next week I will implement your techniques, starting with a minute jog throughout my walking, and working on my breathing!
Any tips on training for a 10k in a limited amount of time?
I can run a 5k easily but I do a lot of weight training with little cardio. Great video
thick shoes are a myth..we were meant to run barefoot. the reason you get injured is because you’re running heel/toe instead of landing on your forefoot. you don’t need more cushion, you need to run properly. the less shoe the better.
I’m a bit confused. We want our arms to swing or we want them stiff?
Thank you! Will be trying out the breathing tips tomorrow. I normally do a 5k with no breakfast but will try half a banana to see if that is better.
The amount of times I went on a run and had to shit is uncountable. My tactic is to just run faster and with an over exaggerated form. Holds it in every time, 100% guarantee.
I was training for a 10km run as part of my Triathlon training and I got shin splints by increasing my distance to quickly. A rule to prevent this is never run more than 10% of distance you ran the week before. It is very easy to do if you are fit and strong from cycling or swimming a lot.
There is nothing on this earth that exhausts me more than running….i am competely beat and exhausted after just a 1.5 mile run….and we are not even talking at a fast pace….
I do a cross country team and the “easy” warm up is FIVE FRICKEN MILES that’s WHY IM here
I made that mistake of eating and drinking too much on my first 5k, and I ate some after and then I had dance and after that I was sick all over the car, so don’t do a me
How do I not get bored on long runs becuase I need more mileage I run about 30 a week but I Wana increase that but long runs are so boring
My body fat decreased 2% just only in 10 days jogging and walking in the morning everyday
3:22 “It’s like running with a stick up my butt a lil bit. I become VERY very stiff.”
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Phew, good thing the toilet called out to me before I started running today
Hi Matt. Ive just started running and ive let myself in for a 3 mile race with a friend. My goal is 15 minutes. Whats the quickest way to achieve this. I dont mind how intense as im very commited.
Hey man that is fucking gross. Nobody want’s to see you taking a shit.
I’m a new runner. Ive been drinking only coffee and water before a run. So that I can poop beforehand. I don’t eat though. How bad is this? Be honest:/
I like how I watched this video 3 times for all 3 cross country season I’m about to do
Thank you:-) I just started running and this has been really insightful!
Hey Matt! I was wondering why vegans need to eat more calories?! Thank you
The only reason I wanna know how to run faster is because I want to beat the fastest kid in my school
Weel… it’s like this, like I entered a marathon once and turned into utter disaster! I was not any near the front, and well, I felt my gut cramp up and yes, I wound up in public shitting myself from runner’s rubs. It was very embarrassing so I had to stop, find a porta-potty and well, finish my business. Later I gad found out what I had experienced is not uncommon it’s called runner’s diarrhoea. This happens when the gut is jostled a bit too much. What was worse, is that I had ran in a fundraiser for the C& C.UK The Crohbs abdcolitis UK. it is an awareness and eduxational organisation serving the UK as a whole, andI was particularily embarrassed as I too have IBD (Crohn’s disease) there is no cure but obly mabagement from an IBD team. I have hadCrohn-s now for 7 years as this began when I was 20. (www, crohnsandcolitis.otg.uk
Like if ur watching this on the toilet while taking a shit and gonna go for a run right after
When I run in a forest I think of slender man and I run a lot faster and longer lol
How you running and talking at the same time so easy. When I’m running I and try to talk it sounds like I’m dying lol
I find myself running 3K in one go and my aim is 5K next, the problem is that my legs and give out on me whenever I try to exceed 3K.
Keep an eye on ur running dynamics parituclarly left right balance for early signs of any injuries materialising; watch the trend from run to run. And foam roll to find any areas you’ve tweaked then be very cautious about going again before the area is responding well to treatment. And of course, warm up and stretch after.
This is cool and all but what do I do if I’m an overweight 13 year old who wants to get good at infection
4 minutes into this video i realised that he is talking nonsence
I’ll save this video for when i can actually leave my house and run lol
I’m a normal weight 120 and my entire life I could never run even on the playground without feeling like my chest got stabbed
One of my friends had a terrible experience because of not pooing before a run, I was there…it was traumatic for all of us smh
This video really helped me to improve my running techniques!I was terrible at first, but last month I won a marathon,so I’m really proud of myself:)
Thank You!:))
I only breath with my nose all the time even in 10km is that bad?
Hmmm… running 3x long your NEXT run is a bad idea. Unless you already can run close to that distance. I mean I get it’s meant to be a motivational thing, but still. Receipe for injury… length of runs should progressive.
If your in 2019 and a man, check out this week program to run faster and longer. https://youtu.be/dHfNHVaTygk
You remind me of My Brother that died in the ARMY, he always tried running with me, and you even looklike him:'( but, imma Subscribe!! keep it up!!
He’s a challenge, do everyone one of these things before a run
Quite funny, looks like we’ve switched to running on clouds the same week:-)
So I am really out of shape, and a couple days ago I decided to do something about it and began running 6 kilometres a day whith little to no acitivty before and im not quite sure if im doing it right? Tbh I was really suprised the first time I ran more than a kilometre.
I got injured while training for my first marathon. I’ve since fixed a few issues. It might sound obvious but since I made the mistake I think I’ll go ahead anyway: 1) listen to your body and don’t force the distance if you feel anything unusual. I tried to do a 27 and 30km long run with 1 week between each workout. I had to stop the second one after 20km and my left hip got stuck because of a contracture. Couldn’t walk straight for 2 weeks. I could have stopped way before the pain was just too much to handle and had to take 3 weeks of rest after seeing a specialist. 2) Don’t do those long runs on new shoes. Pretty much like races, running long runs on new shoes is a bad idea. They need to get broken in with shorter runs first. If you realize the shoes are not good for you, you’ll avoid a lot of issues. 3) It’s better to run shorter runs more often than be a “week-end warrior”. Unless you run at least 3 times a week it’s not sensible to do long runs longer than 1h30, step up to 4 times a week for a 2h45 long run. 4) I doubt running 3h in a single run is sensible, even if you are training for a marathon. Once you go real deep and deplete your glycogen stores, your body will be forced to user other sources of energy. Fat stores aren’t the only source. Proteins are another one, and they produce a huge quantity of toxic by-products your body then has to flush. Overtraining is also not very far from that. You might think you’ll deal with “the wall” much better, but with a long run of 2h40 I had no issue with my first marathon. You can get a lot of time in the saddle without those issues, but for running you need to be careful. 5) Listen to your body. I repeat myself here, but I sometimes skipped workouts when my legs just felt too heavy and never had any remorse doing that. Long runs are often key workouts for long distance training, but sometimes it’s more productive to train smart rather than train too hard (ie: not getting injured).
Since the gyms have closed, I’ve been trying to on running. Its not easy, but I told myself what else are gonna do. I find your advice very helpful. Glad I found your channel.
im here cause i tried to run 30 minutes today and ended up almost dying 3 minutes in

This was great, I been tryin to find out about “how to accelerate faster while running” for a while now, and I think this has helped. What helps me (and I learned this from a Navy buddy when I was in the service) is for every quarter mile, inhale a deep breath, hold it for three seconds and force blow it out and repeat two more times. This relaxes your muscles which helps with endurance.
I have a track meet at my school soon. Might be in the 800m. Wish me luck! (im gonna need it TwT)

“10x 400m”
“90-150s loop”
Wait, 90 for a 400m run????
4 minutes per kilometer is 96 seconds per 400m.
So how can the fastest you put were 3m 42.5s per kilometer?????
Its 400m!!
And 6m 15s per kilometer for the maximum time???
Even my grandma is doing marathons faster than that, and she is… I DON’T EVEN KNOW HOW OLD SHE IS!!!
[But great advices and tips, I will save them in a list]
I feel as if this title is just clickbait cause all tips you gave are long term and dont ” instantly” make you run longer.. For that i leave a disslike
I’ve been running for a few months now and I feel like my stamina has increased a lot! Recently I have the problem that my calves start to hurt right-away even though I stretch before the run. It also doesn’t help if I stretch after a mile or so it just keeps getting worse. I never had that before since I started running. Any idea what’s wrong?
For me getting the right pair of shoes changed my running completely.
I’m on my period…. but I still have to run I have no choice and I have cramps sooo that’s fun, because of my DofE
I searched how to run away to a different country, but okay.
I really want to put the Shila Bouf meme “JUST DO IT” on here lol
I am looking for a channel which show the collect running form, alignment, balance, arm swings, shoulder, back spine, foot landing, etc. for long distance running more than marathon distance.
Here’s how I increased my distance when I prepared for my first half marathon: I have a 5k running track 2,5k or a few bus stops away my from my flat. First I took the bus to the track, run the 5k and take the the bus back. The next was to take the bus there, run the track and back home (7,5k). Than run out, do the lap and back home (10k). Bus, 2laps and back home (12,5K). Lastly running out, 2laps and back home (15k). I think I only did the 15k version once before the actual race. Maybe not the best technique but it worked for me.
I usually start slow for like 1-2 min and then I sprint for 50 sec and then I repeat
Ngl I run so that I can I don’t eat much so it helps move things along. Plus I run on a treadmill in my home gym which has a bathroom next to it so I’m safe
I jog like 45 minutes a day, its about listening to good music, and push to a runner’s high as they say.
So when you talk about increasing distance, you measure by time? I always heard the standard “increase by x% of your miles each week”. Is it better to judge my “distance” by time instead?
Roses are red, violets are blue, i am running, to take a big poo!
Never been able to run farther than 1.5 miles. Never tried to slow down always thought faster was better for whatever reason. Can run a 6:45 mile at 220lbs which is good for me. Today I ran for 1 hour 5 minutes straight at a 6.5 treadmill speed and finished with 6.88miles. I slowed down, leaned forward, and through my nose out my mouth. Never crossed my mind I could run more than even 2.5miles and when I hit 3 I wasn’t even breathing hard. Unbelievable such small changes can make a big difference. Thank you.
Great topic! I’m using similar methods as I try to stretch myself out and increase me weekly mileage. I find that body position is key especially up hill!
I’ve only ever done a jog/run for 7 1/2 minutes while watching a short series and my face was hot and I thought I’d pass out. I don’t see how people jog or run for a long amount of time
Dawg Where am I boutta run like without looking sped asf
I am a seasoned runner and fairly new to triathlon and “Born to Run” is the best thing to happen to my running game. To anyone who wants to improve their running style and reduce injuries, i highly recommend this book by Chris McDougall. Not only did it improve my running game, it enabled me to run much further with less discomfort. Also, its a great book well written and interesting even if you are not a die-hard running enthusiast.

I thought the whiteboard behind him was a window until he started writing on it.
Can I say that I’m going to eat 1 apple and drink one glass of water in the morning then go to my run, I’d that fine?
I’m running 5k in 22.50, I want to get back up to 10k. Thanks
Started running a month ago, 5k in 35 mins and now I’ve got it down to 28 mins but at that pace I can’t run the whole distance.
Well, actually, I’m watching this bcuz I want to be able to run, but I love sprinting.
I’ve been doing this for 6 months still cant run for more then 2 minutes☹ Getting frustrated
Just visit website Next Level Diet and get personalized Diet and Training plan with amazing tips. I lost 15kg in two months. Finally, I have a six pack.
This was an eye opener to me, about mechanics, Thanks so much. I will try this. I like the 3,6,,9,10 mix too for the physiology ( 10X400 at 5k pace but those are just a little faster?) The rest period are lite jogs or do you walk?
Every single time I go for a run I start feeling a pain on the outside and back of the knee lately. Every single run, always the right side knee! What could be causing this?
One thing that always holds me back is the pain I get in my shins. I’ve only just got back into running for like 3 days but it hurts when I run. I’m guessing it’s just because my muscles in that area are very weak.
What a lovely, amiable, young woman, and an excellent explanatory video. Very motivating. So glad I watched this. Good luck my fellow amateur runners ♀️
I love this running videos but hey how do they shoot this one? Is the camera guy on a bike? just curious
Finally someone explained what I figured out myself some time ago…Static stretching before run is the worst thing you can do.
As an American I was wondering why he was sweating in 40 degree weather and then he said kilometers I was like “oh duh”
Well done at Kona, Heather…

I can only run a mile straight after that my leg start to hurt about 1.50miles
anyone have tips for leg pain? shin splints and muscle strains? Im not usually a runner but all this extra time during quarantine has me running a lot which puts my legs in a lot of pain
This video helped me run my first half marathon in 2 hours 41 minutes and 8 seconds yesterdayThank you Matt:)

Your ex. runner (16 years)
This was great, I have been researching “proper running form and technique” for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of Hiymelia Ziyddison Scheme (do a google search )? Ive heard some super things about it and my partner got excellent results with it.
I can’t even run a block without going out of breath, and he’s running and talking like he’s not even moving.. ♀️ ♀️ ♀️ ♀️..smh
I did your warmup videos for the first time and ran 8.03 miles! Feeling great!
I was wondering I’m a 16 year old male runner who started about a month ago I I have been doing about 3 miles day, at about a 12 min mile and can’t seem to improve that time any tips?
This is hilarious. I am on the toilet before my first run because I don’t want to have a poo problem 3 km in.
Hi Matt, I’m just getting back into running. I’m running at 6am, so wanted to ask about fasted runs. I’m doing about 6k per morning, slowly, with a mixture of jogging and walking. I can’t seem to jog for more than 3mins. Today I tried to slow down but still only ran 4mins before getting to the point of I need to walk for a minute.
I’m going to try and implement the things you’ve mentioned in your video. Wish me luck
Also subscribed thanks to this video ☺️
I’ve been increasing my mileage/distance by 10% each week. Running 3-4 times a week. I’m currently at 2.1mi. I am coming off Achilles tendinitis. Any vids coming on how to deal with such injuries?
I get to 10 miles and I always have to stop because my knees hurt and my ankles.
Forcing myself to run during this quarantine. Up to 5 miles every other day at a turtle pace. I hated running an now I found a new passion
i can’t do short steps otherwise i get shin splints… any tips?
Im training for a marathon and very quickly got up to a distance of 29km. Got the odd injury + covid19(didnt affect me too badly tho) but other then that I really found no problems increasing the distance. I think the reason Ive found it easy so far is because I jump rope a lot for fitness(long before I started the marathon training). So Id do an hour a day jumping rope 3/4 days a week. I found when I did the really long runs that I got into a skipping rhythm while running and it almost became automatic. I wasnt expending much energy and it allowed me to go much further then I thought I could. Ive been training with the jumping rope the last year and before that when Id run Id struggle to go more then 5k.
So if you are taking up long distance running you should combine that with skipping/jumping rope at home a couple of times a week as its low impact training and it helps you a lot with endurance/running rhythm………….. Well, it worked for me!!
I’m 11 years old, doing cross country which is 2km and now……
I NEED SOME TECHNIQUES AND TODAY IS THE DAY
2 weeks ago I went for a run, I could run about 250m before totally running out of breath, like I was on the floor panting. I found your video after that run, I ran 3 time a week improving little by little, today I ran my first 5K ever and the crazy thing is, at the end of the 5k I wasn’t panting or out of breath. I mean sure I was exhausted and sore but I wasn’t totally out of breath. I hope I will continue doing this, I literally thought it was impossible for me to do a 2k let alone a 5k. Really I thank you from the depth of my heart.
I don’t like doing them, but intervals once a week are the best way I’ve found to increase distance. But I mostly do trail running, where the hills are the real “problem” (but also what makes it so much fun).
Please don’t suggest more cushion! I myself thought this in training for a marathon and bought more cushioned shoes. I got injured and switched back to minimalist shoes even for long distance and the injuries went away. Studies and research have shown we are made to run without cushiony shoes!! No research or evidence for cushioned shoes. Only a dramatic increase in runners injuries since these fancier shoes have gained popularity.
Running On Clouds huh 😉 Good choice. I am hoping to qualify and compete in the 2019 or 2020 Spartathlon which is roughly 6 back to back marathons in under 36 hours from Athens to Sparta. I have only been running for less than a year but had already managed my first ultra by July. The past two months i have focussed solely on 10k races and so, when i went for a longer run only 25km today, i could feel my hamstrings tensing up and had to quit after the 25 so as to avoid injury.
btw, how did Heather do at Kona?
I completed 12.3k just today because of this advices.. normally i run 5k to 8 but having hard times.. and this vid made me finish 12k in less time and less struggle.. it works actually.. specially the slow pace and breathing technique.. thanks for the tips. It helped a lot..
Been running 10-12 miles since quarantine, use to just do 8 tops. Now I’m training to go further, foot is in some pain, been adding on yoga at the end of the day and icing my feet also staying present in my strides and form has helped heal my feet while I run as my body adjusts to the new mileage. Love running thanks for the extra tips
i was really expecting this to be clickbait but these tips are so genuinely helpful cheers bro
Im new to running. I really needed encouragement because I am doing it on my own at the moment. Saying im not a runner is my Biggest hang up. I came for the breathing tip lol everything is so helpful!! First video Ive watched and this Indiana girl is subscription.
I’m starting my summer mileage at 50 mpw, training for a sub 16 5k. I want to increase to 65-70 mpw how how do I go about this without losing speed. Also, I’ve never taken a rest day. I run 7 days a week.
I really needed this because my school has cross country and we have to run ♀️
I was in seventh grade and had chocolate milk before a raceworst idea ever!!!!
My Hoka one one shoes have been a god send. They force more of a mid strike but still offer plenty of cushioning. I have run three Half marathons and am training for a full now.
That breathing tip really helps me while running since I have asthma and bad allergies lol
Several videos now I’ve seen you running with ON running shoes, how do you get on with them? I contemplated buying a set rather than my asics kayano but read reviews that the cloud system underneath fill up easily with stones and debri, have you found this to be true?
The tip you gave about creating a playlist that maximizes your performance is scientifically supported!
I attended a lecture at the Library of Congress in DC and Dr Costas Karageorghis, spoke about his research on custom designing playlists for high performance athletes.
It’s fascinating research and I highly recommend looking him up if you are interested in this subject of music and athletic performance.
I am leaving a link to the lecture I attended: https://blogs.loc.gov/music/2018/10/music-sports-exercise-how-tracks-tunes-can-improve-your-performance/
These sounds like summer pretty solid tips & I’m going to try to keep this in mind. I do more so treadmill running due to doing some weight & body weight training as well at my gym. The goal is to one day get back into a real track and try to get a nonstop mile in. Thanks for the tips.
Training for my first half marathon in Septmeber! This has helped!
Why can i only run 3 miles before dying, but the time has been getting faster.I run everyday shouldn’t i be able to run faster
Can we get a round of applause for the Cameraman he kept running and recording the man this whole time
I turned a corner on adding distance when I read somewhere that I should do base miles at a pace that is “so slow it is embarrassing”. Once I did that (literally mid-run observing if I found myself assuming people around thought I was slow) I could run for much longer. I’d even recommend starting with walking your target distance and then slowly build in runs blocks. Almost guarantees no injury as well.
I’m 12 and I’m thinking of changing to distance because I’ve never been very good at sprints like terrible. My 100 was 17 sec. but that might’ve been because that’s when my knee was sore for the whole season but idk. Any tips on switching for short to long distance??
man, if I were running in sf, I’d run longer just by the beauty of the nature
Yeah! I would run with a mat just so that I can do a plank, really?
Been running for just a month..i always struggle and trying to finish 5k everytime i run.and i saw this video and i will give it a try.. then ill comeback here and tell you guys what will happen. But i like tip #5.
By the way, my first day i ran only 2k for an hour then i didnt give up and now 5k is just like drinking coffee.but i still struggle and i want to improve and run longer distance.ill give it a try and see what happens..
i can run 200 hundred meters best in the state anymore and i want to die
Physiologically speaking, when doing a sprint triathlon, you will rely on glucose much more than on fat. That is because of the intensity at which you’re racing a sprint triathlon. Also, matter of semantic but I still wanted to point it out, fat isn’t a more efficient energy source, it’s just more sustainable.
Otherwise, great video and great content guys:)
Do you have any recommendations for new runners who are prone to rolling their ankles? I’ve tried taping mine, being more mindful of my feet but it happens no matter what I seem to try
Im embarrassed of people watching me
I go to cross country in 10 minutes
Every fucking time i run i gotta poop and im like mile away from a toilets so i just turn around
Couldn’t agree more about the psychology of running. I started the couchto5k 6 weeks ago. I am now running. As the time for actually running has increased I say to myself, well it’s only 3 or 5 minutes longer than last week. Today I ran 25 minutes. On Wednesday I ran two 10 minute segments with a 3 minute walk in between. When I started today I said to myself, this is Wednesdays9run without the break in the middle. It was a hard run due to a head on wind. But I still did the run without stopping or walking. I’ve had that mind set since about week 3. So I’m not concerned about running 30 minutes in a couple of weeks. It’s just a mere 5 minutes longer than today. I just take it steady and if I start to feel tired, I slow my pace until I feel ready to increase it agajn6
Slowly working my way up to Olympic distance. Teaching myself to start of running gradually and then add speed so that Im not burnt out before the end. All about learning! Thanks for the tips
Wow! It looks like you are running so fast but then you make it look so easy. Great video btw!:)
I’m so glad that I have come across your videos. They are very informative and I have been implementing a few things. Thanks a bunch ☺️☺️
Shoes have been the biggest battle so far. If not a lack of cushion then it’s toe abrasion and if not that then it’s cushion.
The word “more” is redundant when saying longer; the word longer implies more, just say longer not more longer
Please do a video on stretches to avoid common injuries. Ive had shin splints in the past and scared they return
Bruh, I’m struggling to do 2.25 miles, I should probably find something else because I don’t think you’re supposed to be doing half way stuff at the same time as 1 mile left stuff
It’s farther, not further. Farther refers to distance. Further refers to things not physical. Examples are “Nothing could be further from the truth” and “No further questions, your Honor.”
I need a bit of help guys. Just startet training again. I was a cyclist the last two years and a swimmer in my youth. I want to train for triathlon but my running skills are not excisting. I can only run 1km before I have to walk, so I do kind of intervals. The movement of running feels so unnatural for me because of the shocks when landing on the asphalt. Also my breathing feels weird when I run. If I go fast or slow does not make a difference. Does anyone have an idea how I can improve?
i only click like bcos hes hot haha. Yes points of running longer noted.
2:31 me trying to hug my dad that never came back from the store
Here I am learning these before PFT for Army. Gosh I could barely do a kilometre and I have to finish 3k in 15m
Test is next month. Hope I’ll be able to run that far by then
I really hope you enjoyed this video. Let me know what you thought!
P.s I’ve got my 24 hour obstacle course race coming up that I’m doing for charity. I’m going to Africa in August to help create clean access for local communities. If you’d like to donate, you can go here: https://www.gofundme.com/24HrRunForVolunteerTripToAfrica/
If not, it’s totally cool:) love you guys anyways!
Excellent video, both the information and the delivery of it.
I have a question to anyone who could help, so i use to run about 2 to 3 miles a day back in high school last year I tried getting to the habit again and ended up with plantar fasciitis it took a year for my feet to recover I started running again about 3 weeks ago and I run a mile in about 11:20 now, my goal is to get to a 8.5 minute mile but also be able to run atleast 3 miles without stopping, now that I can jog a mile should I try to jog it at a faster pace or should I just increase distance and when I get to my 3 mile hogs increase the pace???
How did you get the definitions in your arms? They look amazing, please share..
oop for the first one i’ve been sprinting a lot and i keep saying i’m a sprinter so mabye i have to say i’m a pacer?
Hi can you give me more easy tips while running. Cause i easily get tired while running and my friends/classmates run so fast and i’m always the last one that running, i feel so embarrass and feel like a loser
Here’s a tip.. Don’t wear black when it’s hot… and great advice thank you!
AoA, sir plz give me tip for 1600 meter in 5 minte plz help me stamina &speed and diet plan
i cant get enough of your coaching. after watching you i am so dedicated to running and working out as a whole. you have a gift
Matt I have a 400 metre track and field run and I am a kid can you make a video how to out run someone in track and faster. Please I have asthma and it is hard for me to breath while running. And I need to try to run faster but I can’t really
Breathing. Always thought I had horrible stamina when I was in fact breathing incorrectly. Breathing was literally the difference between having to stop 3 times on a 1.25 mile run and being able to run 4 miles straight in 31 minutes.
please be cautious when increasing intensity. I did that and thought I was great! then came on the runners knee that knocked me out for two weeks. I ended up being back at square one running 3 miles at only 12.5min/mile:(. if only I had been more careful! I now don’t pay attention to the time or distance as much, and just try not to hurt myself.
Need to meet the mile time for the SEAL test. I’m a minute off right now
You have a new sub. I’m 44 I’ve watched and listened to so many coaches, some good, some terrible, some professional and some amateur. I’ve watched 3 of your videos so far and I don’t think I’ve seen anyone, especially so young, getting messages across in such an articulate and genuine way. I’ll definitely be watching more. Thanks.
I do cross country im in 6th grade but I got asthma but I’m not going to give up
3:20 mans just acted like a 20 mile run is something we’ve all done
Watching ultra marathon videos & stumbled upon How to run longer video…awaesome!
You do a good job explaining different techniques.
I’m going to relax & watch them all.
Wish I could get out for a run as am suffering from sciatic pain..miss my runs!
Keep up the good work!!
One time i became the fastest runner in the world for almost 1 mile, broke all limits just to get to the toilet.
I play too much on the sidewalk.. I be striding to not step on the cracks and break my momma back
I just got back from a torn acl and my 3 mile time is only 30 minutes but my club team wants us to get at least 23 minutes, so this really helps.. thank you!
I’m a beginner runner and have only been running for about two/three weeks. These tips helped me run my first mile ever, and I did it in 10 minutes! So thank you for making this video. It helped me a lot! My mindset when it comes to running is changing, but the change is GOOD.
i would love to run and ima start making myself go to the track near my house starting summer atleast once or twice a week ( of course if no one is there and if i can get in without trespassing but it seems like a public place ) cause honestly.. im not gonna do it just to glow up i just want to feel good about myself:/
Help me please I am 16 year old and I take about 17 minutes to run 3KMS how can I increase my speed?
I actually appreciate all of you correcting my grammar, I never get concerned with ‘negative’ comments because I always see the positive side of it and it helps me learn and grow:) With that said, keep in mind that just because you know something that someone else doesn’t, it doesn’t make you better. Imagine if I walked into a gym and started putting down people in a negative way who don’t know how to lift correctly because they are new to the gym. That person would probably never go to the gym again. For those who don’t know, From year 9 to year 12 in high school, I had to have a reader and writer during my exams because I didn’t know how to comprehend what I was reading and had a hard time writing. I was NEVER good in school, especially with my grammar. But thanks for correcting me anyways and helping me learn:)
This is probably the only video that has made me interested in trying it (the tips)
Using the drill @ 2:31 for humility too. Guaranteed to feel stupid on the first time and every time after that.
Here is the video of my first trail run
https://youtu.be/8eCeQpJqTlM
Yea don’t take a shit before running. The shit in your bowels will help you develp speed and eventually will be turned into energy
I’m just watching this since all the slow kids are catching up to me. it’s time to put in work
Came here for information, but got sidetracked, it’s those Lycra leggings
Thank you because every other day I run and I get very tired because I’m also trying to lose weight I am very fat so thank you I will continue to do what you said and keep jogging because I run miles everyday so thank you
The psychology thing is spot on. I know this is an unethical tip, but when I’m tired and completely out of energy, I just say to myself that I’m gay if I don’t reach that lampost. It works all the time lol.
struggling to run for 90 seconds & this dude’s on about running 150km
I was running through the woods and wanted a number 2, so did it there, used the leaves to wipe and went on my way. That’s dedication.
This advice was crucial for me. Patience is key. I am not trying to do anything crazy but change takes time. Cutting my pace by seconds is improvement. Improvement is key.
Thank you young man. You did a fantastic job!! Very informative. People have such a hard time NOT being critical.
My legs get really tight and burns during the warmup stages any tips?
This guy’s talking about 20 mile long runs I thought 5km was a long run
Does anyone just not want to die whilst they do school running ♀️
*oh,okay.*
I heard women runners don’t take dumps because women don’t poop. This true?
I eat my dinner then a yogurt and toast then waited 40 mins but my time was down is that an example of over eating?
Your talking is really effective and motivating……
Man, you hit it right on the nail. I wasn’t a runner before active duty i have taught some of the things you brought up. I can say this, you definitely opened up my mind to different points of views. I will use this video over and over again to mentor others and especially myself!!!
Not getting enough sleep the night before really slows me down
Never drink liquids before you run…it gives you a side stitch.
hi guys. thanks for your videos. my request, could you make video with analysis about running technique of Patrick lange
I have two problems. First, everywhere else says to add 5%-10% on to your run each week. Your suggesting 300% instantly.
Second. Run slower? If I was to run slower I’d be walking. Seriously. Hold a conversation around 140bpm? I’m sucking wind at 140! (my max HR is somewhere in the low 190s during peak anaerobic exercise.)
This should probably come with a (non beginner) qualification after the title.
i’m trying out cross country on monday, and tbh i’m not the most athletic girl soo i’m really scared ):
I only came here because I always come third and my new years resolution is to come first or second but whenever i run and I always sprint at the start I start to slow down and does anyone know how da hElL is he running that far
I’ve been struggling recently. I knew my body could take more pressure but at the same time I felt almost like something hold me back and it was frustrating. With your tips I can run much longer and enjoy running again. Thank you for this video.
I am only 11 and I can do 5kms in 14 minutes, why are adults so slow…
I will do run distance test 2400m in 12minutes, its so hard for me, i really get tired in 6minutes if i run faster. Can you give me step to do that test:(? *sorry for my english hope you guys understand:)
Matt, I use to weigh 140 and now I weigh 120 lost 20 pds but I can’t lose no more weight why is that? (I am 14) but I want to be strong
BTW, I just subscribed. I look forward to hearing more from you.
Thank you so much, I love running, but often get so frustrated when I get burnt out so quickly. I was doing it so wrong, now I got it. I can’t wait for tomorrow morning to practice these techniques
Knees going past the toes is a fitness myth. It’s perfectly ok for the knees to pass the toes. She wasn’t even hitting parallel with her squats
Thanks a lot man I ran way longer on my football training appreciate it
Matt, Thank you so much! I just started a Couch to 5k program last week after not running for 20+ years. These tips are very helpful!
this nigga said he sweating and its 40 degrees. I would be needing a sweater.
Matt: sweats at 40 (probably a bunch of humidity)
Me: sweets at 120 (yes 120 this is the desert)
I’m getting back into running after a long break & this workout is such a great way to diversify my short 1.5 mile runs and distract me from being frustrated at how hard they have been.
Appreciate your running tips. No wonder I was not able to run longer or further previously because I wasn’t doing it right.
great video,BTW I’m I the only one who think u look like Dani Alves
Cheers for this, I been tryin to find out about “how to get faster at running” for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about Ralebney Running Recoilless (search on google )? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my cousin got excellent success with it.
Talking about pace whilst running at the speed I could manage about 1 mile lol pretty motivating that you can do that dude.
I did 6 miles today. Started a month ago but I used to run 5-6 mile days regularly so it’s not bad. Hoping I can get up to 10 miles.
Ok, but I’m a smoker and run out of breath and get tired almost instantly. Should I start out walking? I want to do HIIT running? Should I start out with one set?
I’m 17 years old and I ran 10km and it took time to me 57minutes.So the the thing is am I good at running or I’m not?
Rubbish..Sorry You can’t! It’s muscle memory (endurance) your putting yourself more at risk of injury, most certainly longterm,
Reside in Calif. 60 year old vet. What stat are you in. I’m looking for a trainer.
I’ve been running for abt a year and because of corona, the track season was cancelled. I ofc ran on my own, but I definitely have slacked and haven’t been consistent. The xc season is coming soon, and I hope this helps!
How to instantly run faster
Patience?
Don’t get me wrong I’m a fan but this title is quite misleading
Thanks for the tip man really help, im preparing my 250km run in 30 days
Umm i can run 10 miles nonstop and after this i couldn’t do 30 miles damm
Omg I went from being able to run 1500ft and wanting to die to doing a 7 minute mile the next day just from doing that two in two out thing thank you so much I thought I was doomed to be the back of the pack
Not Listening To Your Body that’s why I’m against pre-made running program. One think I don’t understand is why every single premade running program for beginners is a 5k running program.
literally i force myself to go as far as i can from home and when i feel like giving up then when i turn around i have no other choice than to do the rest of the trail home and i usually end up doing about a 10-15 km walk/run
I don’t run I hate it but I have nothing else to do since gyms are closed. Two days ago was the first time that I jogged 3 miles pretty much nonstop and felt so good!
This is just awesome!! As i can only run 5km for now, i was very chocked to the 150km run! Wonder how it went…
Hey guys and gals just run everyday cuz it gets easier cuz am running everyday and I love it just have ur music on and just go
I’m only a beginner jogger, I always listen to music whilst jogging, I’ve tried it without jogging but it Gets boring, Also music helps me ALOT with my jogging technique and breathing.
I find that the first 5-10 minutes of jogging is the hardest, that’s when you feel like stopping as you get tired. After your body gets used to jogging after 5-10 I can carry on jogging for a while.
