Thanks for this video, brand new to this whole zero drop world, bought a pair of Merrell Trail Glove 4’s, hoping for the best. Also, btw your dog is too smart, literally moved out of the way when more people with their dogs started walking by , awesome.
If you’re reading this with sciatica and low back pain I’m telling you, you NEED to be doing MacKenzie stretches. I was miserable with a herniated disc for over a year and was at the end of my rope and decided to try the MacKenzie stretches regularly. They’re very difficult and painful at first but by the end of two days of doing the stretches every hour, my pain was starting to ease and my mobility had increased by probably 25%. It’s been a year since I had a flare up of back pain and I still do the stretches around every meal (3 times a day). It’s going to be painful and seem counterproductive at first but take my word for it. I’ve been there.
Isn’t there a critical difference in the strike pattern when running in zero drop shoes? Isn’t that shift important to cover?
Did your dog just move out of the way of other dogs? LOL. Cool!
I live in a tropical country and wear flip-flops (thong sandals) predominantly, and also am always barefoot when at home. I can run barefoot at the beach with no issues, and I currently use 4,5, and 6mm shoes. I wonder if a transition to zero drop running shoes would be less problematic for me?
I have one for you. I can not walk at all. I went for a walk and it hurt so bad so I started to run and it hurt less than walking. I ended up running about 300 yards. I have not been to the doctors because I’m broke because I cant work.
Those vertebrae models you used to demonstrate the herniated disk. Are those coffee mugs that look like vertebrae? Pretty funny if they are.
Started getting pain behind knee on that tendon. Is that from not being use to zero drop?
Good info wish I’d have found this video a tad bit sooner than I did, I figured after a weekend of walking in my new Altra’s I could go out and do my normal 5 mile trail run, not the smartest thing I’ve done that’s for sure, going to start incorporating your ideas now, thanks!
Can I go back into body building eventually after a thoracic herniated disc eventually
Please help Doctors and thank u for your videos
Went from a 10 to 4 drop and got knee problems. Unfortunatly the shoes specialist didnt tell me that I had to adapt to my new shoes. I went to running specialized store with my old shoes….
I’ve run in “normal” running shoes all of my life. When I first heard about these Zero Drop shoes I bought a pair and started running in them. I never looked back and I love them. So far I’ve had no issues. Maybe because this way of running is the real “normal”?
I read “Born to Run” in 2013 (about 9 months into my running career), and went minimalist. I then “transitioned” to Altra’s which, really, was no transition at all. I think all beginner runners would benefit from starting out minimalist and correcting their form on Day 1.
What u have on foot instead of a sock? I think i need that thing
Hey great vids! How do you do
Feel about reflexology insoles/sandals for work hours casual wear for recovery and wellness? Thank you!
2010 I went with Vibram five fingers. I love them. First two miles speed work outs no problem. Four miles hill work out, OMG calf’s sore like crazy for two days…. But I love them.
No way could I walk as the pain spread, but after cortisone I thought up you go and don’t be lazy, it does not fix itself! So lumbar cushion for the car and home, and big walks on the beach doing exercises taught by my chiropractor, must look like a complete idiot but too old to attract the gorgeous young man posing on the beach so did my thing, swam for a while (brrr, that water is still freezing]. Had a cardbox in the back of my car with bottles filled with warm water and washed the ocean of my body, got into my street clothes and went home! Felt like a new woman! So try and keep active as sitting does not promote a strong back! worst was the burn between my shoulder blades but putting both hands, both against each other, chin down and stretch in the front took care of that, I am astounded so you have that burn, try it!
Really good stuff, as the creator of Altra, there’s only one thing I would add which was alluded to but wasn’t covered in detail. If you choose a zero drop shoe that has just a bit more cush/support than the current shoes you are used to, you can pretty much jump right in to things with no real transition. I always still err on the side of being careful, aka easy runs week 1, moderate runs week 2, and hard runs by week 3, but for MOST people, you can transition safely to Zero Drop without reducing your mileage by simply choosing a pair that has a touch more cush/support than you’re used to. Then your next pair you can drop the cush/support level and continue to do so. Thanks for doing this video!
I transitioned to zero drop Altras (Escalante 1.5 for road and Superior 3.5 for trail as I want to feel the terrain) back end of Sept and I’m now up to the 10-15K range. Taking a while but my calf muscles now look like they’ve swallowed an avocado when I spring off them, they’re getting a lot stronger! Started off short distances then mixed in with my old 8mm shoes on a rotation, just about ready to ditch them now.
There are two reasons. A shoe fits or it doesn’t. He is right in some ways, however he’s falling a bit on the side of ‘marketing’ and not reality.
A super proffessional and helpful video thank you. I feel like I went to a store and was lucky enough to find a friendy expert.
Not sure if I want to go 100% zero drop. I run now in a 4 drop and 8 drop. Both pairs need to be replaced soon. Thinking about a Hoka and a new Balance Beacon. Hoka I know is a 5 drop, pretty sure the Beacon is a six. I would like to try a pair of Altras for recovery days to help stretch things out.
I’ve worn Xero casual shoes for months, and worked on form while running to forefoot strike consistently. So I finally got some Merrell trail gloves and vapor gloves. I did a 2 mile run in the vapors which was fine, but foolishly got overzealous and ran 16 miles next day on trails in the trail gloves. Currently on day 3 of no morning run! So anyone reading, definitely do not go overboard or you will actually seriously impair your weekly mileage!
If i run in spikes often, do you think I’d be able to transition into altra straight away?
I’ve been considering hard making this change, but nervous about it so putting it off until after this running season. Food for thought here, hopeful I can make the change earlier without negatively effecting my upcoming trail ultras.
Wish I would have watched this prior to going going cold turkey on my Hoka’s to Altra’s and now I’m dealing with a ton of Achilles pain ugh
If I’m careful about the water temp and only air dry, can I clean my shoes too much? In other words, does the repeated soaking and drying (I don’t use detergent or soap ) break down the materials more quickly?
Thanks for the great videos! I’ve really enjoyed the channel. I currently run in the Altra 2.5 and want to get the new 3.5 version. Do you know how the sizing is on the 3.5s? I have Escalantes in size 12 but I heard the Torin 3.5 run a little shorter than the Esalante.
I do most of my mileage in kinvara 8s (4mm). However, they are too cushioned to make you mindful of your foot strike. Also I’m still prone to calf cramps when I run 9+ miles in them.
As we live in 21st century, there’re more convenient and faster ways for drying running shoes than using paper: convection dryers. They’re pretty quick, cheap and don’t take any space for storage. (#3 in the list https://runnerlight.com/best-shoe-dryers/)
Do we have any long-term studies substantiating that these shoes are better when it comes to degenerative processes? Stronger feet isn’t the same as less arthritis.
I personally transitioned without any struggle and actually felt noticeably better. My first few runs cured tons a little lower leg things issues I’d been dealing with but granted I’m a midfoot forefoot runner who gets like 10-15% of my weekly mileage barefoot
Hello glad l found you! I am an English teacher and l am diagnosed herniated. Almost every day l have 6-7 classes all standing cause sitting is forbidden and for me walking and standing are so hard cant even stand properly. I may not do the exercises or use a stick in the classroom please tell what else l can do l tried the ways Of sleeping and pillow under the legs is great for me but turning standing oh walking l am in pain.
if you’re concerned about heat in the washer, just change the setting to cold water! it’s not that hard
On my third pair of Altra Torin. Sometimes use vivo barefoot in summer for park runs, lovely and lite, just like rubber socks. Took me about 8 months to transition to the point it is natural again and didn’t cause odd aches afterwards.
I’ve been following outdoor footwear and making minimalist footwear since the 70’s. Please everyone, drop the footwear misnomer “drop”. “Drop” was made up a dozen years ago by someone who didn’t know about industry standard references to heel height for lasts and shoes. Marketers then seized this new buzzword to draw more consumers. Try this: substitute the word “heel” where you now say “drop”. Zero-heel, not zero-drop. 5mm-heel, not 5mm-drop (whether a wedge or step heel). You’ll be historically accurate and consistent too; no one goes out on the town and comments how nice the ladies look in their cocktail dresses and “high drop shoes”.
it works with those holes but my feet feel suffocated now and hurt. I guess need to break them in more but damn it hurts.
Switch slowly… I guess i didn’t…
Lately i running in 8mm drop, but i have shoes ranging from 4-12mm. Not long ago i was going on a trail race. Guess what, forgot my shoes. Just happened Altra was sponsoring the event, they had some slightly used, but new pairs for $50. I picked up a pair and ran the race (13km trail) in them. I did great, no injuries or soreness other than the expected. How is that possible? (Not an athlete, just an amature 44yrs old runner, who runs less than 3yrs…)
Zero drop aside the Altra’s toebox will make other shoes unwearable I have started using wedges on the long runs, their lone peak trail shoes, the one, the provision and the torin are all in my run rotation and they are awesome
I just wore barefoot shoes for the first time today. I felt every rock and stick I stepped on. Does it get more comfortable or should I just use regular shoes?
this is the first time someone 10 years ago saves my life thanks!
Yeah, did it a some years ago, insertions achilles tendonitis was the end result. Still suffering from it.
like mine, there are some washing machines which have a setting specific to shoes with no heat, just water. I very rarely do it, maybe once or twice over winter. What’s your opinion on this guys?
Yeah. When you use a confortable zero drop shoe it is easier to adapt. But if it is not, like the mizuno’s universe 5, for example, you can get injured if you don’t be cautious. I use it only for competition.
1. Buy black shoes for trail running
2. Spray with hose when muddy. Remember to remove insole first, and fill with a plastic bag to minimise water getting inside
3. Dry by radiator / airing cupboard
Separate pair for track/ indoors
I’ve just got into running and love these tips. Thanks for making the video. What about things to keep them fresh? Or any cleaning products/gimmicks to use/avoid?
When you catch part 1 way early and part 2 isn’t up… can’t wait!
I didn’t even notice the extra holes… Thanks so much <3:D
You were exaggerating. There is no need for such preparation. What a joke.
I moved to Topo’s a few months ago and I love them! Wider toe box and zero drop. They are so comfy and feel like I’m wearing slippers. For trails, I had been running in Hoka’s but something changed with the last model and I was getting terrible blisters. No issues with the Topo’s. I run in Saucony Everun Guides for the road. Transition to the the Topo’s was no problem as the Saucony’s and Hoka’s were 4mm drops.
Running in deep snow will get your shoes completely spotless. Unfortunately it is rarely possible all year round.
Would like you to address the Lone Peak 4. Zero drop as part of trail running.
Ok.. so I have never used a zero drop shoe. I have been a die hard Nike user.. specifically the Pegasus. But I have improved in my running since watching you guys and implementing some of the techniques. I have a really long way to go but I’m trying. I saw this video and I thought I’d give it a shot. I bought some Altra/torins. I was going to use them only for my races. I thought I’d better try them out so I knew what to expect plus break them in. I had zero expectations. I will have to say it was a whole new game. It made my gait different in a good way.. unexpected. Also I could tell the feet muscles were working differently. I don’t usually share but I really was amazed that there was such a difference. Who knew! Thanks guys for your continued work to help us become better.
love my zero drop shoes. some say it’s for sprinting but my first test run was 8 km no problem.
Washing in a 15 minute 30 degrees program once per quarter doesn’t really harm the shoe…..if this gives 5 minutes of spinning at 1200 rpm, that’s a total of 6000 which is more or less equal to a 7 km run I don’t think that will harm the shoes (at least I never experienced any difference after washing), shoes look like new, dry them on a drying rack and they are good to go. My off road shoes I just hose they should be a bit ‘dirty’ anyway!
Make a video regarding tips to be followed after sciatica surgery
Thank you so much for this video!
The loop method just stopped me from binning an almost new pair of trainers!:)
I didn’t really need much of a transition period, but I was also doing a lot of foot and calf exercises and stretches for a while to deal with plantar fasciitis.
i can walk all day sir there is some pain ang sciatica tingling but its not to much 1 to 3 on the pain scale, im not in any pain meds for 2 months now should i continue walking
Thanks so much really helped now i can wear my new jordans for school:)
Zero drop minimal is also another beast. I prefer 6mm sole zero drop like Xero shoes and Vivobarefoot brands. I went from hokas to zero drop cold turkey, that was a mistake but once I learned and adapted slowly to the point where wearing anything with a heal and cushioning would feel very uncomfortable.
After going zero drop minimalist full time my knee pain is gone and my plantar fasciitis is totally gone too. My calves are definitely more muscular too.
I’d totally agree with McKenzie’s thoughts on injury being caused by poor posture after exercise. I’m positive my sciatica problems were caused because of my car seat having poor lumbar support.
I’d drive home after Karate sessions, in slouched driving position.
I developed a stiff back originally which escalated into a really persistent sciatic pain that travelled the full length of my leg. It took years of physiotherapy for it to heal.
Yes you can. 6 months ago Disc Bulge L5-S1. Now Completely Pain/Numbness free. Running daily from past 10 days. No Pain. No Numbness. I am taking it slow. Doing Back exercises only. No Pushups. No other weight exercises only running.
100% agree with this. I walk around at work in a set of Vivobarefoot. I really like how they have help strengthen my feet (I finally have an arch) but when I tried to run in them they were far too unforgiving. The Altra Escalante have been amazing. All the things I like about my vivos but with some cushioning and spring. I have certainly had to work my way into them but the Vivos were a great starting point.
Thank you very much for this interesting vid! Coming back from long time injury and just bought the Escalante.
I don’t care too much for shiny shoes. Having multiple pairs I just reserve one pair for bad conditions. Most of the time they get the miles in before they get all too dirty. But actually, I brushed them all off a week ago before packing them up for travel. Did not even know where to look for the brush.
I am dealing with herniated disc at age 71, for three weeks it was so bad I basically had to lie flat on my exercise mat. After epidurals five days ago, the pain is 95% reduced, and I am beginning what will obviously be a lifelong regimen of exercise to try and help the disc heal and strengthen the back. Your videos have proved an excellent, practical, and trustworthy source of the most basic information on what to do, what to avoid, and how to maintain strength and deal with this condition.
After studying all this, I have actually concluded that this disc flareup was triggered by exercises I was doing to recover from torn rotator cuff repair surgery! Two of the exercises involved leaning forward and swinging weights in a pendulum motion.
How ironic is that??
Thanks so much! I got these new awesome running shoes, only to find that the heel had more slippage than initially thought, and this trick was excellent.
I’m a 67 year old sprinter. Last December, I was diagnosed herniated and/or bulges in all of my lumber discs, then in December, I had a BAD attack of Sciatica that put me in a wheel chair for 2 weeks, and unable to lie down for 2 months. I added your recommended stretches and exercises to the treatments from my own PTs, Plus added an inversion table session daily. I SLOWLY added walking and running exercise back into the routine and by Mid June was competing at the Senior National Championships. Yesterday, I set a new PR in my 200m and 50m. (set a new PR in my 100m 2 weeks ago).
I still do all my stretching for the lumbar, periformus and sciatic nerve issues daily.
I thank you two, in part, for my recovery.
I like you too but I don’t do Facebook or Twitter, I’m a much happier person now too. Lol!!
Thank you BTW!
I’ve taken up Nordic pole walking, as recommended by my physical therapist. It is a lot of fun and works many more muscles than walking! You can do it outdoors or around a track in inclement weather It’s also easier on the joints amd hips. Love it!
I originally started switching to the Lone Peak trail shoe. I didn’t have a lot of issues when running trails, mostly muscle pain in legs from using new muscles. I got the Torin for road running and my ankles and feet have been hurting a lot. I’m working on transitioning but feels like maybe the shoes aren’t the best fit. Is there a road shoe that is comparable to Lone Peak? Also my feet are very flat and I have no arch so I am questioning whether it might be too much for my feet to run on the road without orthotics or more support? Any ideas? Have you seen success with very flat feet? Is there a better road shoe for very flat feet? Thanks!
Great information! Btw, just wondering if either of you ever use those vertebrae models for coffee cups? ( Be honest….)
Can I return to cycling in a similar manner after the injury
Comment below that Shahram asked about the treadmillI would also like to know the difference. Walking on the treadmill compared to outside. I have been walking on the treadmill and can not do it anymore. I am wondering if walking on the treadmill makes it worse because of the exact same movement. The pain has gotten worse since I started it. ( of course I stopped ) Extremely hard to go about my day.
To be honest, I never really clean my shoes, unless they are really muddy. Then I just wash the most of it off with tapid water, and let it dry itself. No toothbrush, no newspaper. Usually cushioning gives up much earlier for me, than the other parts of the shoes. (I have an Asics GT1000, that has 2500+ km in it, the tread is as flat as You can imagine, but the shoe is still ok.) And also, if the shoes take too long to dry, just buy 2 pairs of them:-P Oh, and +1 to the jokes:-) Those were the things that made me spend 2 nights watching GCN videos after I discovered them.
I’ve run about 120,000 miles in the last 47 years and a year and a half ago I came down with an awful case of sciatica. I am back to running, and I must say your advice is great. Thanks so much!
NO SHIT…. It’s an eyelet… Use It!! Duh….
Untying your shoes with that EXTRA loop is a Pain In The Ass!!
Just use the extra hole as…. AN EXTRA HOLE!!!
Works just as good without having to Screw with that Stupid Loop…… TaDa!!
…iiIi/
Thank you guys. I have a bulging disc, but it has been feeling better after a few months of walking and doing core exercises. I’m gonna start to run for half a block and i hope i don’t get any pain.
Thank you for this video! My sciatica receded by following the exercises in your other videos. Now I have a clear approach and know when I can run again.:)
Question I run in 5 fingers 0 drop to Nike of 10. I run in all as tools. Is that better or should I work to run in all zero drop. For me barefoot shoes vapor gloves or vibrams is about 6-10 miles. Altria feel sloppy for me
What about walking/running on a treadmill? Will that be better or worse than on the pavement. Please comment.
With herniated l2 l3 the doctor said keep walking but with walking i got pain down both legs
Like little spasms hamstring and calf muscles both legs
Can you do a video on proper running posture to avoid injuries
I have sciatica and I have gym and we ran the mile which is 4 laps on the school track. I didn’t feel any pain down the leg. It also includes dancing, I do a few different dances, yet, I don’t feel pain. So should I put the break on dancing until it heals??
was a speed walker/ jogger. I hurt back jazzercing 5 months ago. Just now getting around to go out and walk again but so afraid to get hurt again! I will start out very slowly and no jogging for a while. Thanks for info and to get info on how to start again after an injury!
Thanks so much! I just got real expensive Adidas shoes and the first method worked!
Hi would not a back bend pinch the bulge in a herniated disc? ❤️
Tried all these methods and right heel still slips; drives me crazy!!
Thank you, this is all seemed obvious, but good to hear. Love the trick of stuffing the shoes with paper towels or newspaper.
This video is surprisingly clear and concise about cleaning running shoes! Thanks a lot for this!
I was doing McKenzie extensions (along with other exercises) during about 1.5 years after my L4-L5 got ruptured. Everything was fine and I gradually got better, but one day these extensions started to give me pain. Now I have no problems with flexion, but extensions can be painful sometimes. What can It be? Did I overdo McKenzies? (I noticed that I have less chance to have this pain when I regularly stretch my glutes and quads. Prolonged standing in the same position leads to sharp and short shots of pain at my lower back).
No wonder he’s former pro! Look at him now. Medium socks!
Also just take out the laces for better manoeuvrability and squeezing the dirtiness out of it.
If you have something like a metal coat hanger, the cheap one lying around bend two of those and stick them in a dryer. With shoes on. Cheap workaround for shoe dryer adapter.:/ But works
My left lat muscle felt very tight when i was deadlifting so i stopped. How do i fix it? Seems deadlifting triggered something in my lat (back area)
man it totally worked for me……….. i bought some really low top sneakers and i even thought they were a size bigger………… but no…. they feel perfect with this technique thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What about using ski boot driers to dry your trainers? Not too hot as they don’t deform the ski boot.
Good video, but what about cleaning the interior of the shoes? Did you find that it got all of the mud out? I recently went walking on a very muddy beach and now my shoes are gross and I’m looking for the best way to clean them.
This is brilliant, the dramatization in the beginning was awesome… keep it up..
Good old radiator. Put newspaper ON TOP of radiator, then cram the shoes on them with maybe paper too. Or better yet, have a heated closet like I lucky do:D Got some warm pipes that keeps the closet warm.
One of the funniest GTN vids so far, with Heather in an, er, unlikely role!
do I have sciatica If I rode my bike and felt fine but the next day I couldn’t get up out of bed and in fact fell down from shooting pain in my extremely lower back
Would you not recommend walking then while recovering from sciatica? Does it need to be healed before starting walking? I feel better with walking to be honest

Plz help me.I have the same pain starting from back but runs through from of my leg and pain in my knees gets sever at times to lower parts so whats wrong wity my leg I’m worried
This was great because I was thinking about getting antra esclante 1.5
I have a mesh and synthetic underlay, should I clean them with soap and water, or will they fade? They are black.
This is really interesting, i’ve never run in zero drop shoes but I gather it promotes a more natural running style? As you say that adaptation and transition is key to the move!
I have a knee injure and my doctor said to do not stress it (too much), not sure if changing to zero drop will benefit or will make it worst.i’ve been using Adidas boost for years. Any suggestions?
After almost 3 months of new Asics (and only 20 running km’s!) I have holes in the inside of my heels. My shoes don’t feel loose, but I’m going to do this to see if it at least prevents the holes from getting too much worse!
I just purchased a pair of Altra Lone Peak 4s for the trail. I currently use Newton Fate’s for the road and they have a 4.5 mm drop. No issues yet with my Achilles, although I have had that in the past with zero drop. I’m currently just running about three miles in the Altras. I really wanted to move to Altras since they have the wide toe box. Once my Fate’s wear out, I’ll try moving to the Escalante.
Just a couple months ago you guys were replying to every comment, that’s what set you apart from all the other guys on youtube. It made you guys seem connected; like you actually cared about your viewers. But not anymore:/
Great intro, such a roller coaster of emotions and an award worthy portrayal of a situation we all know too well.
I am going to cry. I just got a new pair of sneakers and was disappointed that it kept slipping when I walked. This video is one example how helpful internet can be!!! Thanks a ton
Perfect moment to share this video! Just had a wild and muddy trail in the woods. Shoes are going to shine again!
Run ♂️ hang shoes in shed/porch bang off mud then run ♂️ repeat. If you time for all that cleaning then your not training enough. Keep your bike clean and your shoes running
The oldest pair of shoes go into the mud. I leave them muddy until the next run so dried mud falls itself. After a couple of runs a general wash in the shower does the trick
Thanks, Chris, for that helpful information! I’ve been having arch pain in my custom NB 759’s, and I’m about to go for a run to see if this lacing technique helps…
I have been running, coaching and selling running shoes for over a decade now, so I have a great insight on this transitioning subject. I also wrote many articles on it.
The secret: “If you do not change 100% of all your lifestyle shoes to a zero drop wide toe-box shoe, you will never be able to permanently transition to any barefoot “mimicking” running footwear! ” period!!!
The human body stays elastic on full range of motion, only if an anatomically correct position is maintained through long periods. It is because of the lack of vascularisation and the high possibility of calcification in tendons and ligaments. They do not stretch on a way like muscle do.
People hunched over cannot do overhead squats. People sitting a lot in chairs, most likely cannot go ass to grass.
If your achilles tendons are shortened by only 5mm, but mostly likely 15mm, all day long, running 1h a day in VFF/Altra and doing some 45minute ankle drills will do absolutely nothing, towards making you less injury prone while wearing zero drop shoes. They will help, in case of mobility and health, but a snap, elongation, fibre inflammation, plantar fasciitis, mortons syndrome can pop up anytime!
I say this because, there are some runners, who can effectively transform into an Altra or Vivo shoe and maybe can maintain it for 1-2-3 years. But boom, still something will happen and they go back to elevated heal shoes. I know literally zero person who has been running in zero drop shoes exclusively for more than 3 years. It is because we cannot counter balance 15hours of bad posture with 1-2-3 hours of correct running form and exercises.
3mm / 4mm / 6mm yes, but not zero and definitely not zero and no cushion.
My advice is change lifestyle, including nutrition, hydration, posture, full range of motion functional movement patters and so. Then change lifestyle shoes. Then change running shoes.
This video does not contain all necessary information about cleaning shoes and thus I gave it a thumbs down. How can you get rid of the odor? I tried antibacterial washing liquid mixed with water and many other things to clean but nothing seems to help.
I’m careful with my shoes. Laces always undone, tongue pulled out to let them breath, and powder when necessary. They are too expensive to take for granted.
That’s a route most of us are not interested maybe because people are overweight, have back pain, are heel strikers or just because we don’t want to sacrifice comfort to run a little faster, there’s plenty of shoes in market for everyone style and definitely the advantages that you mention aren’t for everyone and that should be mention on the video

I rarely clean my cross country shoes because they usually get pretty clean when I run with them again (rain is best of course).
If I absolutely need to clean them I’ll just use a shoe cleaning brush on the dry mud.
You should collaborate or do sth with Triathlon Taren because the amount of triathlon youtubers is pretty small and seeing that happening would be great. That would also help Taren achieve his main goal for 2018.
I have been using Altra Torin for about 8 months and will never go back to other shoes. After doing about a couple of months of adaptation with a fairly slow run, now I am fine with this type of shoe.
Good video. And very timely thank you! I’ve also been considering low and zero drop shoes (esp. the Altra Escalante) to improve my running form footstrike/cadence. I’ve only been running about 4 months would you recommend this? It seems the perfect time to me (before I get into any bad habits) but unfortunately there seems to be a lot of snobbery surrounding the use of Altras judging by some of the comments on Youtube. i.e. I’m not an elite runner, but how can I ever become one if I don’t start somewhere?! Also, is running with zero drop a bit of a one way process? Would I be better interchanging the Kinvara (for example) with my normal 10mm drop shoes? Thanks in advance for your advice!
OH MY GOODNESS thank you I bought some superstars yesterday and my heels were slipping like crazy thank you so much!
Been having this problem for years. Even in the highest dollar running shoes you are paying for mostly advertising. They are almost all made in China as cheap as possible with flashy multi-colored soles that tend to separate easily after limited use, and the foam in the heel is thinner and cheaper now, and tends to compress after you have been wearing the shoes for more than an hour. (and is literally designed to wear out quickly so you have to buy new shoes again) Lacing to tight puts pressure on the metatarsal bones and will cause pain or make them injury prone! Have tried lacing differently but have found that after the shoes have been on for a while they stretch somewhat and the rubbing comes back. So: try this… 1. take an old pair of socks that have holes in them, cut off the foot part and discard it, use the ankle part and pull it down over your heel and put your regular socks on over them… 2. Take some type of foam, you can but it at most fabric stores and some athletic stores, cut a small strip about 1″ wide and 2″ long, use medical tape (I have found that the stretchy type works best) tape the piece across the back of your ankle where the rub takes place, make sure to give it about 2″ overlap per side, put socks on over it… 3. Wear a second pair of thinner socks under your running socks, I have found that these cheap, thin, no show ankle socks that can be purchased at most dollar type stores work well. When shopping for shoes look for good thick ankle foam, if the shoe has a crease on the inside of the back of the ankle cuff it is either too thin of just cheap. Try on shoes without insoles, pull them out and walk around in them. Most manufacturers are making the soles as cheap as possible and making thicker insoles to get you to think the shoe is more comfortable than it is, and the insole flattens out it a short time. Did not have this problem with shoes fitting properly twenty years, or more, ago! The elephant in the room is that modern athletic are made cheaply, no matter how expensive they are, and are designed with the “Planned Obsolescence” model that has been endemic to American businesses since the 70’s. I bought a pair of shoes for twenty dollars from Costco last year (FILA) just for power walking, at about 25 miles a week they lasted 8 months before ankle padding started to wear out. In comparison I purchased a pair of 120$ Nikes for running and at 6 (SIX) miles a week they started coming apart after two months, (less than 50 miles)the pretty colorful soles started to separate and then at three months, had to us special glue to on them, then the ankle padding started to come apart by the third month… bought a 140$ pair of Reebok’s right after that not any better! Now I just buy cheaper shoes and replace insole with really good re-usable insoles, and when the cheaper shoes fall apart (20-30 dollars) I don’t feel bad tossing them or demoting them to yard work shoes. By the way, to get the most out of the ankle padding use a shoehorn to slide shoes on and off, will also help them fit better, and if you’re on the go, keep a piece of plastic cut from a milk container with you to act as a shoe horn, works great!
or dip the whole thing in warm soapy water, then rinse and let dry…. seriously a toothbrush? who has time for that
…if of course it was protruding to the rear left or right of the spine? Thanks I like you too
Great tongue in cheek video with some good advice. Not sure about Mark’s choice of weekend bootee are they for cross training?
I came to this video because I’m not used to the low shoes like these. every time I put them on, they slip off my feet and feel weird when I wear them. worst shoes ever. I even put them on, not tight and they hurt my feet by making them sting and making red marks. hate these dumb shoes. worst invention ever
Do a video on the top exercises for a bulging or herniated disc?
Run the video at 1.25 speed,, makes for funner watching and still get what he saying
This doesn’t really work for me. The lock lacing made my shoe tighter but did not stop the heels from slipping. I did it at different tensions and still got the heel slippage. The main thing it did was make it harder to tighten and loosen when I was putting them on and taking them off.
What works best for me, over 45 years in shoes and running shoes, for slippage in the heel. I always used stick on tongue pads, under the tongue of the shoe near the front. Most shoe stores have them. Some, will even give them out for free cause they are so cheap to buy! They come in sizes small to x large! You don’t see them too much in stores anymore, but I found a website, that sells them fairly reasonable at FEET RELIEF. COM. Good Luck!
thank you thank you! I have a foot that is a half size smaller than the other..always HATED sneaker shopping..didn’t have second eyelet! such and easy fix! Thanks again!
I just tried this and it works. The true story will be when I walk tonight. I will see the if it really does work. Just walking from the front room to the kitchen it really felt comfortable and my heel didn’t slip/.
I just bought nike free run and the heel is slipping at the back,I’m gonna try this, hopefully it will work.
Yeah, some cool and logical tips there. If you’ve been running a long time and especially over the winter a lot of these tips you should already know. I, for one, always untie my laces, pull out the insole ( just so it sticks out of the shoe) and place them under the radiator. Two pairs is a must have and not just for winter. I alternate every week between shoes so my shoes can dry out properly. They don’t start smelling then, either.
Hey, could the benefits of running barefoot help a runner perform even better in regular running shoes?
Does not work no matter how tight I get them. Ever since running shoes have went to the stretch material every running shoe I get does this.
What a great and easy idea! I have one problem. I need to buy longer shoe laces, I don’t think one is supposed to tie the laces over the socks!
Worked for me for regular tie shoes. A smaller size would not fit with my orthotics. The next size caused the heel slippage. While the top part of the heel end of the shoe was fine, the bottom part bellowed out and caused the slipping even with an orthotic insert. I tried method no. 2 as there was no extra loop in the shoe (not a runner) and I am amazed at the results! Give it a try. It helped the way I laced it from in to out than out to in.
Loved the video. I’ve been using Altras for over a year now, but still use my Nike Zoom Vaporfly’s for races with no ill effects thus far.
I love your dog, best behaved as always, and clearly loves to run.
Hello! I’m Kayla.I did -45 lbs past one month.Open hawght.so\#gGvm
Tried the second method. My mind is blown at how much more snug my shoes are without cutting off circulation. Thank you very much.
When was the last time you cleaned your running shoes? Let us know in the comments below
Can i leave my ASICS kayano under sunlight? It’s going to be 43 degrees in Melbourne! Would that direct sunlight discolour the shoes? How to dry in sunlight if at all i can do that? Thanks
After reading Anatomy for Runners I am convinced that zero drop and wide toe box is the way to go. Anyone who takes their running seriously should read this book.
I have extremely narrow (4A,) flat feet; and I have to wear the women’s equivalent of a man’s walking shoe. My orthotics cause my feet to sit higher in my shoes, so I needed a method to reduce slippage. Thanks for the great info!!!
I walk 5 days per week around 2-3 miles. I also started doing old school Callanetics from the 1980s and my sciatica went away.
I have herniated discs and now get frequent back pain. I havent let it stop my running, I just have more off days and do different forms of excersise. If anything I see the pain as a motivator. Despite the pain I still feel a million times better than before I took up running. Before running I was constantly tired, out of breath and generally unhealthy. I’m 40 now and feel fitter now and have more energy than I ever had when was in my 20s. Running truly is a miracle. If you can get past the first 3 weeks of hell, you’ll soon notice that suddenly things get easier and it no longer feels like a chore.
that looping method that you talk about at the end is AMAZING thank you!!!! no more heel slippage for me:)
