I have tried making this twice now and can’t seem to get the sauce to thicken, and mine comes out extremely burnt and crispy. Not very casserole esk. Maybe a little advice, pretty please?:/

The infamous green bean casserole is my favorite Thanksgiving side dish. There are versions of this casserole with more elegant ingredients, but this is the one I have preferred for decades. I always like the onions added on top during the last five minutes or so. I have also seen almond slivers added. I personally do not care for them, but someone might.
I’m not going to put onions on bottom. I’ll mix the onion, cheese & sauce together & spread on top. Then the bread crumbs. Thank you

I add worstishire sauce and sliced water chestnuts makes it much better. also agree with other comments bake covered, then last few minutes uncover to brown the onions.

How can the mushroom sauce be a little thicker? It’s soupy, but I prefer thicker sauce, perhaps add more flour??

2 changes, for my own taste; 2 cans of Cream of Mushroom (same amount of milk) for a thicker, more voluminous sauce, and 2-1/3 cups of the onions; the original 1-1/3 cup for the green bean mixture itself, 1 full cup for the topping. Potentially 3 changes if you fancy a pound of bacon in there. Kills the vegan vibe for it, but, I’ll be durned if it ain’t wonderful.
This would make a good side dish for Thanksgiving. You could probably make it the night before, and just refrigerate it, until you were ready the next day to bake it, right?

I loved hearing your little man play, Reminded me of mine when they were little.
The long onions were a deal breaker. They should be chopped up into small cubes. Also, you needed to add a bit more flour. What you should have done is made the white sauce in a separate sauce pan with the proper amount of roux to adjust thickness and then transfer it to your pan. Good idea with the bacon, though. You are on to something with that.

FYI French’s is a brand now owned by McCormick. I guess this is the standard recipe but this much will only feed about 2 people.
I have a simple, but super flavorful recipe. It just enhances what a Green Bean Casserole should be.
*MAKES LARGE SERVING
-I SUPER FINE DICE a small pack of mushrooms, and saute them with a small pat of butter. Once the water from the mushrooms start to evaporate add garlic, onion powder, and pepper. Mix, and saute for another 5 minutes or so.
Add 1 more tbls of butter, and the cut green beans (4 small cans, or 1 bulk can) to the pot of mushrooms.
Add…
Garlic powder 1/2 tsp
Onion powder 1/2 tsp
Pepper 1/2 tsp
Soy Sauce (1 tbls)
Salt to your liking. I recommend to cook the dish for a while then taste due to soy sauce.
-Saute the green beans until they cook down. Use a rubber spatula to turn mixture CAREFULLY, do not stir, they break easy.
-Add the cream of mushroom, about 1/4-1/2 of milk (thickness to your liking) and another round of the seasonings listed above, and let cook down. Only add more salt if needed.
-Place in baking dish, and add crunchy onions on top. Broil just to toast the onions, and it’s ready.
* Every layer is seasoned, so you have flavor thorough out the dish. And the bake time is just for the crunchy onions, because it cooks in the pot.
Truly is delicious!

I made this last year and loved it and am making again this year. The only problem I had last year was that the green beans stayed a bit crunchy, so I will boil them longer.

You need to use 2-3 more cans of green beans, I also don’t put milk in mine and mix some French’s onions in with bean and soup mix, then also top with the crunchy French’s onions makes it thicker and not so milky: You can use a larger can of Mushroom soup when mixing all the beans.

Every time I see a green bean casserole recipe I am reminded of the time I went with a then-boyfriend to his uncle’s for Thanksgiving only to learn that no one there could cook anything more complicated than scrambled eggs and toast. So I made an entire Thanksgiving dinner for 12 by myself in someone else’s kitchen with low quality equipment. At least they thawed the turkey and had purchased quality ingredients. And a cousin volunteered to help keep things tidy and wash things between dishes while I worked so that was helpful.

I’d never made this before until today (Thanksgiving Day). It turned out great, but I used frozen green beans and steamed them for a few minutes with a little salted water and a pat of butter. Delicious! I layered it into a meat-loaf terrine and baked it @ 325 until the top was brown and crispy… yum.

I substitute the milk with sour cream. I also add 1/8 cup of diced jalapenos, 3 teaspoons of jalapeno juice, and 1/2 cup velveeta cheese. If I’m making it for those who can’t take much spice I usually just add 1 more teaspoon of jalapeno juice and not add the diced jalapenos.

My daughter loves green bean casserole, and I certain yours is the best version, as I’ve tried many of your recipes, but the rest of us aren’t much for green beans, our family has a broccoli casserole that is out of this world, to the point of jumping from this family’s must have holiday dishes into others holiday repertoires. It is a most requested recipe this time of year. ; )

I would use the butter the onions cooked in as the base for the roux for the white sauce. Can you imagine the flavor?

I made this twice over the past couple weeks and mostly liked it. What I will do going forward is use sharp cheddar instead of gruyere and definitely use the tbsp of vinegar over the carmelized onions, which get very sweet a bit too sweet for my taste uncut by the vinegar.
Wow, I must try this versus…dump big can of green beans, 2 cans mushroom soup, milk, french’s onions and cooker up….because I always eat the fried onions….haaaaaaaaa
