Be present for immediate post-surgery care. During the period immediately after surgery, your loved one will need help with food preparation, possibly with dressing, and occasionally with self-care. Most patients take 1 to 2 weeks off from work after surgery, according to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. After Bariatric Surgery, doctors put patients on a diet so that there can be better results.
In the starting, the patient is only allowed to be on a liquid diet, and that’s even on very less quantity. After that, they get allowed to have the food diet. Encourage to do physical activities. For the first few months after surgery, you may be given an acid-blocking medication to prevent stomach and bowel ulcers.
In addition, for the first 6 months after surgery, you may be given a medication to prevent gallstones, which can be caused by rapid weight loss. Many of the medications you needed before surgery will be discontinued. The need for antihypertensive medication may change early after surgery, as well. Patients who take antidepressant medications should be encouraged to remain on these medications for the first few months following surgery.
Patients are encouraged to drink.Start you on your after bariatric surgery diet. Your bariatric surgeon will lead you through the four phases, from liquid to stabilization. Give you tips for using protein supplements to help you meet your daily protein requirements. Arrange comprehensive, follow-up support and educational services.
Sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass are the two most common bariatric procedures performed today and both result in superior and durable weight loss, a reduction in medical comorbidities, as well as a mortality benefit when compared to lifestyle and behavioral changes alone. 9-11 Two recent randomized clinical trials published in the Journal. How weight is regained after bariatric surgery In the first year after surgery, most patients are diligent with diet and exercise. They eat proper portions of 3 to 6 ounces. In the first 30 days after bariatric surgery, symptoms such as increasing or severe abdominal pain, unexplained tachycardia, pyrexia, chest pain or breathlessness, or continuous vomiting warrant emergency referral.
Continue long term monitoring of cardiovascular risk and comorbidities associated with obesity, such as type 2 diabetes; reduce treatment for these as appropriate.Calcium citrate preparations are preferred in bariatric surgery patients because they are better absorbed when gastric acid production is diminished. 47-49 Iron deficiency is thought to increase over time with >50% of patients having low ferritin levels several years after bariatric surgery. 38 It is also more common in women with menorrhagia. As such, empiric iron supplementation is recommended.
Nurses’ application of current nursing literature and standards of care for postoperative gastric bypass patients puts nurses in a pivotal position to affect both early and late outcomes of these patients after surgery. Morbid obesity is defined, and current treatment.Dr. Vernon Rayford of IMA-Tupelo discusses the role of your primary care providers in weight loss, as well as general health tips for your weight loss journey.
DS patients may also have a problem with foul-smelling flatus, which can be a serious issue. Diet is a major influence on bowel movements after a DS. Reducing the amount of fat will usually have a direct beneficial effect on the number and quality of bowel movements a patient may have. Before Surgery All patients considering surgical treatment of clinically severe obesity will be evaluated by the surgical team, clinical dietitian and a psychologist, each of whom must individually agree that the patient is a good candidate for surgery. A series of preoperative blood tests and x-rays are performed following the initial evaluations usually one week before surgery.
After surgery, it’s important to get adequate nourishment while keeping your weight-loss goals on track. Your doctor is likely to recommend that you: Eat and drink slowly. To avoid dumping syndrome, take at least 30 minutes to eat your meals and 30 to 60 minutes to drink 1 cup of liquid.
If you are the support person to someone having bariatric surgery, here are some tips to help your loved one succeed on their weight loss journey.

God bless you Dr. W
Thank you for your time, if I lived closer to you I definitely would want you to be my Doctor!!!
Seriously…. and I mean SERIOUSLY!!! I wish my surgeon would have told me half of what you are telling us in your videos. I live in Michigan and had my surgery done at Henry Ford Wyandotte. Everything went ok, but I wish I would have known more going in. Thank you for making these videos. You are a plethora of information for people like me that need to know this stuff!!! Great job and great LOOKING videos too!! Good job!!
I have my VGS this Thursday and I hate swallowing large pills right now, so I can only imagine how difficult it will be post-surgery. I have been hearing a lot of people sing the praises of the vitamin patches. What are your views on the patches? TIA
I noticed your channel after doing a search to find out more information about gastric bypass surgery post-op. I had Gastric Bypass surgery around February of 2015 and have lost a significant amount of weight since the procedure. I was concerned because I am an emotional eater and have been experiencing stress and depression lately and I am worried that my stomach may stretched a little bit because I am gassy lately. It could be my diet, since unfortunately I have reverted to eating habits. I am committed to never going back to the formerly unhealthy version of myself, but its a process. But is there a way to help your stomach get smaller or resettle itself into its original size. I’ve seen several articles online that focuses on a method called Gastric Bypass Pouch reset. Are you familiar with this and if so, is it possible or effective? Thank you for the information it was so much more informative that anything my Bariatric surgeon or nutritionist provided. I am a new subscriber!
he’s kind of hot in a Wedding Crashers/vince vaughn kind of way lol
wow, again thanks for great information. Wasn’t told some of this even by my surgeon in Australia. I discovered after 18 months, seeing a dietician, that I was anaemic. I already take some of this though will need to increase these. Thank you.
I had my bypass surgery at age 57 in May 2015. I started at 299lbs, 5 feet. I’m having trouble continuing to lose weight. I have ostioarthritis. also spinal, shoulder injuries and knee replacement all due to 2 severe falls. I can’t exercise intensely, therefore I’ve been on pain meds for at least 8yrs. How can I optimize to continue losing weight and reaching my goal?
You are an extremely knowledgeable Doctor. I am so thankful to have found your videos as it feels you are mentoring me one and one. I have subscribed and am interested in purchasing your book. A question however I have for you, I am a vegetarian since young age via personal choice, I also don’t do eggs or fish. Would I be at a higher risk of vitamin deficiencies after surgery than a normal meat eating person? I would appreciate to hear from you Doctor! Thanks for your information….
can I order some iron pills from if so how do I get them. Thank you in advance
Thank you for your great informative videos! My bariatric surgeon’s office closed one year after my surgery and this is vital info. for me. I have gained about 15 lbs. since my bypass surgery 2 1/2 yrs ago. I just found you and your book! Will I be able to get to my ideal weight if I eat this way long-term? I lost about 80 lbs initially and stopped losing after about 9 mos. I have worked hard to maintain and not gain any more but your method of vegetables first is new for me and makes so much sense. Is it possible for me to still lose after this much time? I still need to lose about 90 lbs.
I have learned so much watching and listening to your channel. I am planning on doing my gastric bypass in Mexico. What is the recommended dosage for the K-lated iron formulation?
So whats the best way to intake vit B12? Appreciate your efforts!
I have severe OA & can only do chair exercise. What can I do I have regained 30 lbs. 12 years out from RNY.
I was looking up trying to find the cheated iron. The Vitman Shoppe sells one that is as iron Bisglycinate. Cvs sells one that is iron as Amino Acid Chelate. Which one is correct? Please let us know. Thank you
i was wondering if you vwt alot of women with PCOS.. and what surgery would work best.. i am 30 and a bmi of 46. thanks so much..

I have sleep apnea. Wls is a tool. But a very good tool that I’m gonna utilize in being healthy
15% of people are having serious complications or they are dying from it. The numbers are rising every day since there number of surgeries have risen. this surgery is very dangerous and I have a brother in law in the hospital 8 months struggling from this horrible barbaric surgery period this surgery should be outlawed
Down to earth, no drama, science-based, concern for the patient what we all hope to find!
It would have been better if I learned this unique “Yamzoko Weebly” (Google it) a few years back. I lost 12 pounds in 3 weeks up to now. There is certainly still need of workouts even only a couple of times weekly and the foods to have must be best. The actual result presented to me is astounding. Definitely, this is recommended and I also do wish this would give good results to you too mainly because it did to me..
Happy 1 year anniversary on your rock wall climb Shawn.
And happy 2 year anniversary on your surgery. Keep on winning, smiling, and grabbing life by the horns. You got this. I believe in you… always.
Great video. I am 5 days post op, I had the sleeve gastrectomy surgery. I was a bit nervous about the surgery but afterwards I told my wife what was I nervous about? Very smooth process, and minimal pain. Alot easier than a knee surgery which I had 3 in my lifetime. I was in the hospital for 2 nights and after 2 days at home, I was cleaning the house with no heavy lifting.
Come support my journey. First appointment March 29th 2019. For weight loss surgery
It seems every doctor has a different say on the diet after gastric sleeve, some say coffee is ok others no coffee ever, protein first or vegetables first, alcohol no alcohol. I wish there was an actual consensus because at this point it sounds like every doctor makes up whatever diet they want.
She looks beautiful & loseing weight does make a difference as well as able to come off medications that you ended up on from being obese.
I’m down 150lbs with VSG. I talk to men about it and encourage them to explore it. Many men think hitting the gym will work but this doesnt help those of us who are already obese. My respect goes out to this guy and his team. Awesome!
Wow, wow, wow what an amazing video super informative. Do you guys sell the vitamins only to your patients or can I buy them without being your patient? Please keep the videos coming they are GREAT!
my stinky doctor told me with sleeve i dont need to take vitamins. is this true?
Thanks so much for these videos. They’re a big help. I had my surgery Feb. 29, 2016 and I’m noticing an increase in my appetite as well as my capacity for food. I’ve stalled in weight loss. I’d like to know if there’s any way to rejump start my weight loss or is it too late?
liked your page!
can you pretty please share this on fb?
https://www.gofundme.com/help-tracyrobert-fight-for-life
his gastro bypass is killing him. desparate. please share.
I had GB about 10 months ago. I never miss a dosage of my pills. I have lost 140lbs so far and I am 20lbs away from my ideal weight. I am looking forward to eventually taking a multivitamin every other day, maybe just three times a week to make sure I am not missing anything. I having been doing Keto since month two (but a very healthy version of it with lots of healthy, low carb veggies, organic, grass fed, etc etc).
I began to have daily afternoon headaches when i started my weight loss journey May 1 2015. I was on Phentermine for a month shortly after that and i thought it was that.. i was taken off of it, and they didn’t stop. I then thought maybe it was because i stopped diet coke and ate less sugar and fat. But it’s now been 3.5 months and i still have them. They are mild, but come daily around the same time. So i stopped my multi vitamin (which i had started May 1st) and haven’t had one since… any ideas? It was just a normal Natures Way multi vitamin,, not expired.. etc.
Thanks so much for sharing. I’m having VSG next week and these videos are so helpful. Thank you x
My mother’s Bariatric surgery is scheduled at Nobesity Bariatric center, Dr. Manish Khaitan. Gastric bypass
Hey Shawn, first of all, congratulations. I am considering this procedure. Did you face any post operative challenges?
If you have protein s deficiency can you get bariatric surgery
my doctor says eat meat first, you says veggies first, he’ say’s 60 to 100 grams protein daily should I be worried about the protein or the vitamins with the veggies. also I was sleeved in August 2016 and no real help for after care.I’m taking 2 multi vitamins 2 calcium pills,1 B-12 and 1 Iron pill per day. a lot of vitamins does this sound right.I stay hungry and I’m not losing weight have been stalled for a month now.Water gives me heartburn so bad I take 3 meds daily for that. My insurance will not cover aftercare but will pay for my yearly blood work. any suggestions would really help.I don’t know who to ask these questions. Thank you
Great video Dr. Weiner.
I am enjoying your channel.
I’m 2 months post op VSG so am finding your info very enlightening.
Sadly my surgeons nutritionist was pretty pathetic so I’m happy there
are videos done by other doctors to make up the slack.
God bless.:)
Yeah me too. I haven’t got the band. I think I’ll white knuckle it all the way
Hi Dr. Weiner, I love your videos as I am now 9 months post op (sleeve). I, like a lot of other people watch your videos to learn more as you tell us more than our own physicians. My question is I lost 85 pounds in 4-5 months and the only side effect I experienced was a sort of “brain fog”, and a tired body, kinda of hard to explain. Have you heard of this with any of your bariatric patients? Thanks for all you do for us..
Your videos are the best. I rewatch many of them! At 8 months RNY postop I am feeling really tired. I watched this video when I was preop and rewatching it now is so helpful. I best let go of the excuses and drink my vitamins!
Dr Weiner, Is there a bariatric vitamin company you recommend? My bariatric surgeon doesn’t really say much about vitamin supplements other than we should take them. I don’t want ones filled with a lot of non essential stuff like OTC ones from Walmart. I would like ones specifically made for bariatric patients.
Im in the pre-stages (pre-op nutrition classes scheduled comin soon) so most of my questions are nieve. Just wish my medical place had pre-op support groups/classes (I called…they don’t). Anyway one of my biggest questions is with the RNY is the excess stomach they leave in you…..has there been complications? I mean, like twisting or it going down in between other organs, does it just flop around??? I’ve googled this question and sad to say I haven’t come across an answer yet.
P.S really gr8t vid, vocally done beautifully, to the pointn professionally nice etc and yup definitely a cutie (cant say more I married ) thankx for sharing your story though!!!
Can patients have the green powders or protein powders like Raw from Garden of Eden be a successful supplement?
Love your info. I just stumbled on to you video and i will be watching all of them.
Dr. Matthew Weiner, I am 29 years post Gastric Bypass. I continue to have iron deficiency anemia, vitamin B12 and D deficiencies. I receive IV iron every 3 to 6 mos depending on how my levels hold. I supplement with sublingual B12 and monthly vitamin D along with my regular daily vitamins. I did gain a lot of my weight back gradually over time. So, still dieting with all the side effects of gastric bypass.
Glad this exists. Your Dr. cannot tell you everything and even if they do you won;t be able to retain all of it. Keep researching and learning
She looks so good my surgery will be in September I am nervous and excited
thank you Dr, I thought walking and cleaning was not going to be enough. I also was not aware of including frozen veggies with frozen fruits for good nutrition. I do appreciate your videos and such quick response to questions. I have lost 75lbs, by now the weight is coming off more slowly, will it go back to losing it more quickly as in the beginning?
Im 365 and have my sleeve in a little over a week on March 3, 2020. This story is great motivation and I hope your success continues and that I can reach same results
When should I have my first bowel? I’m 3 days post with none. Just gas
Do you allow your patients to take a NSAID if taken through a injection or daily patch?
I have already implemented this particular “Yamzoko Weebly” (Google it) for a few days already as well as the effects are incredible. They give me lots of energy and reduce my appetite, yet I do NOT crash once they wear off which I like, and they also don`t cause me to feel jittery. I have not changed everything else I am doing and have dropped 7 lbs..
I have huge concerns about taking all of this darn calcium citrate. I am 8 weeks post op for a VSG. Frankly I don’t understand it. I am a post menopausal woman whose dexa scan shows no osteoporosis. I have taken 10,000 IU of Vit D3 daily for several years because I need that much to keep my Vit D3 levels above 60. I also take Vit K2 100 mcg daily. I can’t get a satisfactory response from my bariatric surgeon or the dietician to convince me that all of this calcium is necessary for me. In fact I am concerned that all of this calcium will have harmful effects on my cardiovascular system. How do I determine if my body really needs all of this calcium. Will blood work tell me if my body is getting enough calcium?
I am scheduled for gastric bypass on February 20th and just recently heard of major dental complications from the gastric bypass. Can you give some insight if any on this. Also, I have read so much about so many complications, I am have doubts whether or not I should really go through with it.
Love the video very positive im going in on the 25th now this motivates me more
Why is vitamin D deficient in a gastric bypass when it is absorbed rather at the Ileum?
I hav VSG 10 yrs ago. Unfortunately I wasn’t told I needed to do follow up for a year, so I didn’t. I stopped going for follow up when I lost amount of weight i wanted. I didn’t realize I should hav continued going. As a result, gained 1/2 my weight back & I’m very distressed about it. What do l do now? Any suggestions? I don’t want anymore surgery!!{
I just had my gastric sleeve performed 6 days ago on 8/20. I took home several meds from the pharmacy, including bariatric multi vitamins. Do I take them immediately upon getting home, or when I’m on stage 3 of my post op diet?
Does anyone know a good B Complex with at least 15mg Vitamin B1 Thiamin?
Sheesh they have surgery for everything. I truly believe Shawn could have lost weight by dieting and working out
Lovely video. It really cleared up some questions I have pertaining wls.
can you provide a list of vitamins i need after gastric sleeve surgery?
WHAT TO EXPECT? SOME SERIOUS AND EVENTUALLY DEADLY COMPLICATIONS!
After my sleeve on April14, 2016 my iron went from around 300 to 965 so my blood Dr sain no foods including vitamins with irongot a vid on that. thanks Galen
I love all the info you give us my surgery is tomorrow and I’m so scared.
When I look at the shop on your website, I see various iron supplements. None of them say chelated. Are they and how do I know? Thank you!!!
What are the milagrams of b12 and iron supplemts we should take after gastric sleeve.
Bull shit..all weight loss surgery girls fuck all day!!and very easy to get
Peoples!!! Bariatric Advantage makes a bariatric multi vitamin that you can take…! Plus calcium chewys….get on it!!! Lol
I really love your video podcasts teachings. (THANK YOU) for all you do.
I am 44yrs old and had gastric sleeve several years ago. I was recently found to have a total iron of 11 eating ice like crazy. Also had very dry eyes (unable to wear contacts for first time). My total iron is 40 now after a little more than a month of iron and vitamin c. Can you recommend a better iron than FeroSul? Now that my iron is coming up, I am able to wear my contacts again with no problems. So, I believe it was all connected. Of course my energy level is much improved even at 40. My H&H was a little low barely.Your videos are very educational.
It seems like I’m still doing the same thing as before to lose weight after vsg (is working out, counting calories, small portions ) I’m 1 1/2 years and I’ve lost 55 lbs. working my butt off to lose more but it won’t budge. What’s the deal. 5”2 210 (start weight 256).
please help a fat kid lose weight in new zealand
Read his story and donate here https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/lapband-surgery-due-to-pituatry-gland
My iron was low to begin with. I have be inconsistent I drink beet juice daily
dr. Matthew I am getting my surgery in about a month should I be taking vitamins before the surgery and if I have not taken any vitamins would they still be able to do the surgery on me was it after the surgery when you start taking vitamins I’ll really like to know thank you
from what i been reading and watching…the bypass is better for weight loss and for curing diabetes and gerd then the sleeve but the vitamin regimen plus dumping syndrome is scary…not to say the sleeve is not beneficial as well.. losing weight will automatically improve your diabetes and high blood pressure..
Dr. Weiner, I really like the way you explain all your topics in videos, Thank you! I just had RnY on July 10th and I have been trying to find information about the stages of healing after the surgery ie. When does the brain re-connect to the gut system, how to make your gut as healthy as possible to ensure it creates the right hormones to achieve optimal weight loss, swelling, tissue repair etc..I feel SO many people get home and start scale watching for weight loss and forget there is a 8-12wk healing period which is SO important for setting up your future weight loss success. I feel many would benefit from this education so that they stop complaining that they aren’t losing weight fast enough and get themselves into a bad headspace, start cheating and eating things they shouldn’t, missing protein and water, vitamins and moving into the next phase too early because they “think” they’re ready, but really they just want to go back to bad eating habits.
Dr. Weiner I will be having VSG and see a surgeon Feb.24/17. The nutritionist on staff said that I will need to take vitamins for life, including calcium. Although I have always taken at least a multi-vit, I don’t seem to be able to take calcium it makes me nauseous. I was told to try Calcium Citrate, much the same effect on me. Can I achieve the optimal amount of daily calcium I need through food after VSG, and at what point can I achieve this? Thank you!
Awesome video. thank you so much for providing us(public) with such valuable information. Just got done with 3rd knee surgery 2 right 1 left. seriously considering gastric bypass.
This isn’t about vitamins but is it true you can no longer take anti-inflammatory, such as ibuprofen, after surgery?
I bought your book, “A Pound of Cure”, and started reading it before I have my surgery. Great read!
Did she lose only 0.3 pounds when she followed the healthy diet? Or was she not able to follow the diet due to a food addiction?
If you’re interested in following my gastric sleeve journey with me, check out my Youtube channel and this video ( https://youtu.be/cvViy1du10E) to see what specific vitamins and brands I’m using!
What about taking those juice plus pills? blended fruit and vegetable powders? Vitamins and supplements premier protein shakes these are things that feel safe to me. They never make me feel sick I don’t feel like I’m doing something bad. They help me reset. I haven’t tried the juice plus pills but it seems attractive to get in those nutrients in this form.
Congratulations Shawn! Weight loss for your health is a great goal. Rock climbing is a fabulous incentive. Way to go!
Dr. Weiner just wanted to say I take Biotin and found that with thin eyelashes from dryeye, I grew a new full set on the supplement. Really helped my head hair too!
Thank you for this. Im considering gastric bypass surgery and this was very encouraging. I’m 465lbs. The heaviest i’ve ever been.
I am 16 1/2 years out and still have trouble with iron issues. Even had an ablation (rather than a Hysterectomy) but still having issues. My surgeon was excellent surgically but not so great in the followup and nutrition dept.
