Wait until the feet are past the hands, then sit your bum down. When you do this during your practice, 2 things are going to happen: 1.Jumping through at the end of an exhalation, when you are completely empty of breath, is best because the exhalation also facilitates deeper movement into the forward bending position. You will also find strength and support by engaging the abdomen and pelvic floor in Uddiyana (Flying Up Lock) and Mula Bandha(Root Lock).
Quite a few people a have been asking me how to get better at jumping back and jumping through in the main vinyasa sequence in Ashtanga Yoga. I made a video explaining the 3 stages I teach to develop the strength and coordination to take this elusive movement to your next level. If you’re an Ashtanga practitioner and have a hard time with Utthita Hasta Padangushthasana B (hands on your hips while extending the leg out in front of you), jump-throughs are going to feel basically impossible. Holding the leg out in front of you is the exact same type of strength it takes to keep the thighs bent in and touching your chest.Ashtanga Jump Through Yoga Sequence is a advanced level yoga pose that is performed in prone position.
Ashtanga Jump Through Yoga Sequence additionally involves strength, Forward-Bend, Stretch, Inversion, Balance.JUMP THROUGH AND BACK. JUMP THROUGH.
In ashtanga vinyasa yoga, we have many jumps that we run to pass not only by a family of positions to another, but also from one side to another. Here I speak about basis vinyasa of sitting poses. By Adho Mukha Svanasana, exhaling, bend the knees and lift heels, sacred bone below, press on stretched arms. The video of the “Ultimate Jump Back” recently posted to r/Ashtanga made me wonder how do you all approach the Jump Back/Jump Through? I was just introduced to this concept after earning a few poses of the Primary, and it seems/feels impossible.
In the primary series of Ashtanga Yoga, you start with Sun Salutations A & B, then do a set of standing postures then a warrior sequence which transition you to a lot of seated postures – including forward bends, hip openers, twists, and more involved postures.

wuaw! This one of the best tutorial I have seen to understand the “Jump Back” “Jump through”: thank you David 😉
I was all warmed up after your twisted side crow, so tried this fun jumping through and you do make it easier than it looks. Thanks again for sharing your yoga love! I am ready for a windy cold day since it’s 31F out there today Brrrrr… XO
Thanks to you I managed to jump through! This really works! You are great!
Yes! Thank you David! This is very helpfull! Thankyou also Purple Valley Asana school I’ve lean so much from a lot of the vids thankyou for sharing yoga. Namaste
I just started my practice for ashthanga
I have done others yoga practices for many years however jump bAck and jump thru need to be addressed for heavier set individuals
I always find the instruction and performance impressive but what I find equally impressive is the actual verbal explanation WHILE performing all the steps. Talking while doing it is actually one thing that makes me sit up and take notice even more so than a background disembodied voice explaining the actions. Thanks!
Thanks so muuuch, really learning here, great help from You. NAMASTE. GOD Bless.
Thank youuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!! I have been trying to do the jumpback for 4 years!!!!! Thanks to your tips I have done my first one
Love you!!!!
when I sit L-site my palm cant touch the ground,it seems my arm too short and my upper body too long, how can I jump through and back,it’s really hand for this body shape
His voice, and the way he talks, reminds me of John Malkovich:D
Superb video! I love how she’s struggling with it and comments that it’s good for people to see its not always graceful. I agree with her completely. I would love to see more of these combo videos of a teacher doing it smoothly and a student trying and learning.
My whole right side is more “compressed ” than the the left for the same reason.
P.s. If he thinks he has short arms, he has never seen short arms. But I agree, any one can eventually do it.
Dis culpen atodos los quelean pero ella me ofendio y dijo mentiras demi espero me entiendan les.pido dis culpas aloslectores
SO hard:)
Any recommendations on what to use when I don’t have blocks?
I love your video, you help me a lot with your explanation keep up the good work:)
Going to incorporate this in my practice and the drills afterwards or another time in the day beside my practice.
Thanks to the both of you for this demonstration:)
Hi Kino, thanks for your video… but it seems I can’t find any video/instruction at all for how to work on jump back once you managed to swing back.. So its easy for me to swing back, being where you are at 4:51… but then I can’t get it how to “bend elbows and go down”… happy for any tips… Thank you!
Hello, I enjoy watching your videos, however I am not able to get whole messages as I am Deaf. Please consider to add closed captions or English subtitles in near future, so Deaf and Hard of Hearing viewers will be able to benefit on same page as everyone else. Thank you.

Holy wow, how are you still talking? I’d be winded. Props for lung power and strength! Love this video.
Where did you get a yoga mat like that with the lines like that and where to put your hands?
See that was easy… Hilarious. Thank you for the advice becaus this is exactly where I am right now. Awesome!
I’m soooo late to this! Thanks Leslie at +Fightmaster Yoga for answering my video request. Much love!!
Hi Kino, Thanks so much for your help and your videos! I’m loving the practice. I’m new to Ashtanga Yoga and am trying to work on strength and begin the process of learning how to jump through. My feet keep getting stuck though, perhaps my hands aren’t wide enough apart? Its just the tips of my toes that get caught on the carpet. I’m sure its just strength I need to develop, but do you have any tips??
IT IS THE ONLY TIP THAT MADE ME FLOAT NOW AFTER 1 YEAR.
GRAZIE
Never talk when you practice yoga asanas It is more than physical excercise
I noticed that your hands are slightly outwardly turned (middle finger is not forward). Do you recommned that for all hand balancing poses? What about for downward facing dog?
I like this short and sweet explanation. Four easy steps, thank you so much. I am new to yoga and will give this a go.
I love your videos! I do your video with Jessica Kaas, every single day and I love your peaceful voice:))) Your videos inspired me to do yoga and now I can’t live a day without doing it. Thank you for everything. And this video is really helpful. I am pretty tall 6’2” and I have a hard time taking my straight legs through, but I am working. Keep up:)
Great breakdown. This is a great explanation and way to practice.
Great video. Some timestamps that I found useful: 23:40 and 28:00
Thank you. I will try. But I am aware my arms are short. Very short. The only answer to this is to use blocks?
Hello Kino! For those of us who can’t even do the starting position, what kind of exercise would help? Thank you!
kino, when you do this motion are your shoulders externally rotated or internally rotated? im a bit confused…
She does it so effortleslly and swiftly but when I attempt,it’s a pain.
Love you Kino xx
Ehm…how many Surya Namaskar are there in Ashtanga Yoga? I am soooo confused right now! xx
Your hair is a little distracting. Very pretty, but can you pleeeeeeeas just pin it back when your demo’ing.
Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial!!! I’m getting ready for your Atlanta workshop! I can’t wait to practice with you in person!!!:) You inspire me daily!
Hi, Lesley! I am sure you can come through with straight legs too. I don’t think the length of the arms matters. You need to jump and lift your tale bone and hips higher into the air, and then hold that position for a very short period of time; then come through with bent or straight legs, hold the position and then ‘land’. It looks like you rush into passing through. That is my goal to build strenght to hold the hips in the air before coming through. You are very close to this.:) Thank you for the video.:)
That’s an awesome suggestion to switch legs while lifting!! Never thought about it but makes a lot of sense. Thanks teachers ✌️
3 years of practice and I’m still struggling with jump back and jump through…I can’t keep the connection between my chest and crossed legs when I lift up. In other words, my legs just flop down like a lame dogI just can’t imagine it ever happening for me thank you for your inspirational videos though David. They do help me keep on trying!
I have a super sticky rubber mat, which makes jumping through impossible!! In a workshop we tried jump through practice on the shiny wooden floor wearing socks, and I was still miles off, but so much easier than on a rubber mat. Maybe one day I’ll nail it!
Thank you so much for this video! I’ve watched many videos on jump backs and jump throughs, but this one has really stuck to me and I’ve been able to progress very well with my jump throughs already! I used to do the sloppy version that Fredrik showed unfortunately my teacher never encouraged me to try doing it any other way to build up the progression.
Quite humbled by this amazing instructor.. tuck planche (lolasana) is no joke.
WOW WOW WOW!!!! Thank you so much, i wish i could do it… i need to practice aaaaaa looooot!
My yoga game is weak. You’re killing me with this so I’ll be watching the rest of this video while sitting on my butt. 4;10 NOPE!!! but I’m sure my bruises will heal. lol
I have the long legs/short torso issue with the wide-legged forward folds. My head will NOT touch the floor. Haha. Not even close.
Thanks, Lesley! Jumping through and back is a primary goal of mine right now, and this helps a lot.
I like that you mentioned it took you a couple of years to be able to perform the movement. I think most people just assume that you simply have some sort of natural ability that the rest of us do not have and you didn’t have to work hard to reach your level.
What a great video. So very helpful. Love David’s explanations and that Karolina was willing to show that it isn’t always easy to get things straight away even when you have been practicing for years. Love it, love it, love it
Woooow is this that easy?:D I was able to jump trough on 3rd try, amazing training video I started ashtanga 6 months ago, I tried to do it even a teacher was showing to me and helped me but no success.. Feet positioning was the key! 1000 thanks ♂️❤️
I want to learn ashtanga where do i start? I cant afford omstars membership i just cant
“Little by little, and one day it will come.”A prescient statement, as after two years of regular practice I am finally seeing significant gains in core strength. Through Navasana as well as attempting a lift during each vinyasa (even though I cannot yet jump through or back), I can today hold a lifted Dandasana for a few breaths. The core strength gained from these has allowed me to almost lift the legs off the ground as I wiggle through on a jump through, and to extend the legs into a lifted Dandasana to come to a seated position for the next posture. This was something I wasn’t even close to doing in the beginning. The good thing is that, through dedicated practice, I can finally see progression, although admittedly I fought through many months of defeating thoughts thinking I was never going anywhere. One day, this came.
Just put your hair into a ponytail…that would help free your mind and hands for teaching.
Hi Kino I love ur videos! I have been doing ashtanga for half a year now and I feel I am getting better at my jump through. However I realized that I will never be able to do it right before I can have the palms of my hands completely on the floor when I do a forward fold. So now when I jump through, even with your step by step technique, I tend to take the palms of my hands off the floor and press only on my fingers which is wrong of course. Do you recommend I work on my forward fold first?
That Press-up toward a handstand, after you bring your legs through with a small delay right before chaturanga….wow!!!
I needed this! Thanks for making it so easy to move and groove.
Kino thanks for this video. I do have a question.. Where do u point ur focus on arms, feet, or core when jumping? Do u gaze ahead? Also, i feel that my arms are small in proportion to my legs, got any tips that i could work on? I dont want that to stop me from trying the jump.
Thank you, I will be at your retreat in Thailand so maybe then you could have a look and listen. Your videos have been so helpful to me and I can’t wait to meet you!
Thank you for this tip, I will devote my energy to the little baby steps:)
Hi dear I can’t able to stand my whole Pam on the floor when jump back what to do
Don’t we exhale when it’s hard part?..like exhaling when moving up…
Kino, Steve Ross from INHALE gets onto his fingertips and then the jump through is possible, I do it like that and have done so a long time, and considering that Ashtanga was copied from the British Gymnasts who’s to say what’s right and what’s wrong? (Anne Cushman Yoga Journal, I have the YJ article) learned this from the Maharajah of Mysore, Khrisnamacharya copied this and taught it to Pathabhi Jois (who then later lied saying that the manuscripts were eaten by ants in Calcutta when asked “Guruji where did you find this Ashtanga Info from?”)
I CAN hold myself up flat hands in Full Lotus…this looks like fun to.
Having the guts of leaning forward, that’s what I’m missing! Great tips as usual, thank you Purple Valley! And thank you Carolina for your humble modesty, another decade and I might be as good as you:)
a little bit off topic, but could you give tips/exercices for lifting from seated up to handstand?
Hi Kino! I started applying at home the beginners technique you taught us on Saturday in Berlin for jumping through! It already feels better to keep the hands on the floor until I get my feet aaaaaaaaaaall the way through, like you said, to teach the body how the transition should be done! It was really good that you kept reminding us to do it the whole weekend, now it’s part of my practice.:-) Thanks a lot!
Hello….thanks this video of helped me to jump thru and sit softly on the mat while doing sitting asanas. Many thanks again Manish Kharat(India)
Great Video, he is totally right with his thoughts about mens thight hip flexors. For me this is a major thing to work for:)
What brand of shorts are you wearing here Kino? I love them!! You’re gorgeous too 😉 xxx
brilliant little piece on jumping through! going to revisit this often.
Do you really need blocks to learn this? I don’t have any at the moment
thank yo so much…i v been( for long time) looking for this stuff…
I get my legs through but cant lift the damm feet haha just my back is lifted. Patience and Practice Love this channel!
This was just the video that I was looking for:) Thank you so much Kino!
Ohhh!!! This is great. I have to say that the last time i did this i had a contusion in my little finger of my feet. It was not nice. Is not easy. Thank you!! Im going to try it.
whew! jumping back and jumping through have become a regular part of my daily life the past couple of weeks:) I know I should above all be patient with myself, but I have a question just for good measure I have watched so many tutorials on this and many say that I should practice lifting up and taking small steps through when I jump back, but I find that when I cross at the shins, the size of my hips/thighs actually prevents me from getting through. is is possible my legs are just too big for this? I am under the impression that my hands should be shoulders’ distance apart as in a downward dog, but how can I get my legs through if my hips are wider than my shoulders? am I thinking about this the wrong way? oh, how I wish there were English speaking yoga teachers where I live… thanks for being my long-distance guru:)
You explained the steps well. Ive also been taught (for step 1) to cross the legs at the shins, not the ankles. I will continue to practice with patience.
Thanks for this, Leslie! Last week doing your 30 minute Ashtanga class I discovered that I could jump through! The timing on this video is perfect because I want to work on strength with this.
Fantastic. Have never been able to do this. Now I already feel i can work to it. Its always been a mystery. Big thanks. I love youtube for this access to great teaching
If it is a moon day, do you take that day off in addition to your usual rest day?
Thank you thank you thank you! This is exactly what i’ve been looking for! The float jump through has been my nemesis for ages. Can’t wait to work on this and finally see improvement!
My shoulders crack like crazy every single time I jump through (I’m working with your second version at this point) right at the point where I’m getting the legs through the arms. I tried being really conscious about keeping my shoulders “down the back” but that still doesn’t really help. I’m slightly worried this could cause some joint problems down the line.. have you seen this with any of your students?
Thank you, Leslie. This is truly a beginner tutorial on the jump back/through. Thanks for breaking this down in a way that makes it accessible to me.
Loved this simple to the point video. Do you have the complement to the Jump-Through, the Jump-Back??
This transition is so hard. I feel so defeated with this one:(
Thanks kino, always find new tips for my students with your video. I appreciate all that you do. xoxo
My problem is my knees are not Corning as close to my chest while doing the workout to make the core strong.
My thighs are big and stomach not flat also.
How will I do it?
Do you have any hand balancing technique videos, handstands and forearm stands?
Hello David, i have a question, im trying that way to make the jump back, but situation is that t let my feets go back (in the baby steps) i need to open my arms (getting more away from my body), and this make me lose my align of shulders arms to the moment i go down to chaturanga. what you think about this? Thanks!
did my first almost jump through thank you for this channel….did a workshop with you at Moksha in Chicago
I’m excited to start trying this. I’ve been doing Swenson’s “take it up” and then putting my hands in front without much progress. An instructor at Yoga Workshop also recommended something similar. This looks like it will give you a better feel of what it’s like coming through.
As a sidenote, I notice that in Sharath’s Primary Series video he comes into sitting legs crossed instead of floating legs straight method. Is that the preferred method or is he just doing it for us noobs?
Lesley, thank you for this helpful video. Now if you could just give me the strength to be able to do any of it!! Will I EVER get there? I cannot lift my feet from the ground when I raise up on my arms even with the yoga blocks. Ugh! Would love to be so strong. Practice, practice. Thank you!
Really good job! After watching your video, I feel like I now know how to tackle the jump through/ jump back:) Thanks!
Great video, thank you for taking the time to film this. It’s informative, reassuring, and inspiring all in one. I realized that I am definitely a sloppy student, but after seeing this am determined to do better:-)
Hello, Kino, I completely adore your body, I want to ask u how many hours a day u recommend me to do yoga a day, to build sucha a body and master the handstand and other power yoga postures…thanks for ur reply! in advance…
Looks very practical. I am gonna to work on it. Thanks for sharing
so nicely taught! the breakdown is very helpful and I can’t wait to practice this. i normally do Hatha and Vinyasa, but have loved videos i’ve seen on Ashtanga:)
This is commendable to exploring yoga. feel good. Be truly belongs to Ayurved
Such a clear and easy-to-follow instruction. Jump-thru and jumpback have seemed out of my reach; however, thanks to you, I am confident to keep on practising and improving
Wow, this starts today:D thanks so much David! Love your videos
When my weight was 64 kg this jumping flying was no problem with a weight of 73 kg this jumping flying is a problem. Short arms is a problem for this the weight is also a problem the wrist if these are not extreamly strong than thats a problem the hamstrings if these are not very lose than its a problem if you lost the kontact with mother earth meaning you are not daily doing deep squats long time meaning four hours not straight but during the day if not than thats a problem you can not jump with double leggs in handstand than thats a problem to you can not hold hanstand against the wall 10 minuts than thats a problem to this thing is not easy this thing is known in the gymnastic world go there show them what you can do than ask how to train how long etc…before you will be able if they see that you do not have the posture for gymnastic they will tell you immediatly do not border. you either have the body for certain things or not. The freedom of joints can be improved but this will always hurt plus it always take a lot of times the more the joinst are stiff the more time it takes time hours a day years daily all the time breaking joints not realy breaking but it feels like breaking it hurts hurts hurts no pain no gain it hurts muscle bulding hurts joint development hurst the training to realy improve hurts plus you get extreamly tired you colapes you even throw up get black and bleu it is not easy streets I can do hanuman asana and I go further for the full one meaning lying flat this training hurts a lot jumping I practice to handstand against the wall 10 minutes it hurts and than jumping between arms also big big problem can break legs can break arms can fall on head and all of those happen because I want and I demand an I want it now because I could do it it is a deadly fight no laughing matter its world war 3 or I die or I get it.
