Take a big belly brace and press your legs through the ground and to extension. The first thing you will need to do is take the 4×4 and cut it in half. These two 4 foot lengths will be the base of your handles.
For the handles themselves, take your ¾ inch pipe elbows and attach them to each end of an 8 inch threaded pipe piece. Attach the other two 8 inch lengths to the open ends of the elbows.Week 1 – Walk 25 feet up and back 3 times Week 2 – Walk 30 feet up and back 3 times Week 3 – Increase the weight and walk 25 feet Week 4 – Walk 30 feet with the heavier weight.

1. Pick up a pair of dumbbells or kettlebells in each hand (crush the handles) 2. Stand tall with dumbbells out to the sides a couple of inches (do not let the weight touch your legs) 3. Look straight ahead and pinch your shoulder blades (scapula) back slightly. 4. Keep your core tight. 5. Walk slowing and with.– Farmer carries do an amazing job at challenging hip stability – especially when performed unilaterally (one arm at a time). – They condition the shit out of you.

Q. How far should I walk? A. This varies based on your goal. In general, 100 feet is a good distance for a fairly heavy carry.
If you do your farmers carry workout at the gym, or want to buy equipment, you can use dumbbells or kettlebells. Kettlebells are easier to use than dumbbells since they have higher handles, and the weight hangs straight down instead of having to grip the dumbbell exactly in the middle.

What if you do this while walking up stairs? Should be some type of leg workout
Just found you dude. I thought you were Popa Swolio at first lol
Is it even possible for an elite long distance runner like me to gain any weight?
“The Loaded carry does more to expand athletic qualities than any other thing I’ve attempted in my career as a coach and an athlete. And I do not say that lightly.” Dan John
I often see farmers walking through fields doing this, i think thats why they get up so early each morning…..
i was proud of my self doing farmers walk with 16 kg. Then i saw this guy pick up 55kg as if it is a 1 kg bag of flour.
I basically do this every time I bring in water softener salt.
So every day regardless of workout that day, we are to squeeze in extra
● Face pulls From high/Hands past elbows/add press
● Face pull for the low back/Back hyper extensions from lower body up 30 seconds off & on throughout day
● Carries Fire glutes/Pinch blades,activate scapula/side carry
● Band Pull aparts Elbows in/palm up, thumbs out/angle °30 from high to chest for set of 30
● Pull throughs Athletic stance/arms str8/glute pinch & squeeze at top of pull movement
Morning routine
● Alt floor Bridge Set of 10
● Doorway later stretch
● Bar Hang 1 min relax hang to decompress spine
● Bar Hang 1 min Scapula activation/legs in front °30 hold to activate core
Am I missing any of the daily basics:-)
And a
● mobility series
● Core session
Posture correction series if needed
🙂 I love getting in all the basics.
Now that I’m married to a nympho I don’t jack off like I used to and have noticed a decline in grip strength.
I do farmer’s carries but walk under control because I think it adds to the resistance. Almost all of these videos I’ve watched on the exercise, the guys are almost in full sprint.
Jesus is the way the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through Him, cry out to God, He is not deaf to our cries nor is His hand too short to reach anyone, Jesus loves you more than you will ever know. God bless!
I farmers walked with two 20 pound dumbbells for half a mile and my traps are sore.. I am only 14 by the way…
I’ve heard its actually better for you to do one arm at a time and then switch as other wise the traps aren’t activated as much. Does anyone know if thats true or is that a myth?
How many times is it okay to do it in a day? I woke up with pain on my neck I did it several times
Sorry, but, though the simplistic concepts you’re describing here are true, you’re wrong about the benefits of this exercise. Whenever you take a step, the structure of your legs are moving away from the horizontal. The point is to exercise the smaller stabilizing muscles of the legs and back. When these are strengthened, it will help you increase your load for other exercises. It’s a functional exercise, not a body building exercise, but, it will help for that, too. It’s an exercise very helpful for most activities. You’re right that using too much weight for this could ultimately be bad for your posture. One answer is to do it the way Karate practitioners in old Okinawa used to: stepping while using the fingers to hold smooth weights out slightly to the side; this will keep one from using too much weight while exercising the grip.
Is it any better to use dumbells versus kettlebells? Ive been using kettlebells lately and i feel like it may be more difficult because of the weight distribution. Like carrying a big @$$ rock with a handle.
Ya no-I’m going to take Jeff Cavalier’s opinion. Cringe video.
As expert, I think Custokebon Secrets can be great way to lost tons of weight. Why don’t you give it a chance? perhaps it can work for you too.
I saw some Farmers walk bars and some compact ones as well but not sure the difference to just holding a dumbell or barbell?
I call these Boy Get Yo Ass Out Here and Bring These In walks
I love this exercise. I bought some heavy dumbbells just so I can do this exercise at home! I just walk back and forth from inside of my garage to the end of my driveway which is about 55 ft one way. Awesome workout!!!
How to perform Farmer’s Walk: Pick shit up, walk, put said shit back down. Repeat.
Was wondering if this will work the differently with the same outcome. I have head trauma and very little grip strength due to paralysis. Was wondering if I could just strap on a light dumbbell to my forearm and carry it? Would that give me the same benefit as this?
Just found your channel and I love it. Practical and to the point…. My new favorite channel. Thank you very much, sir.
Maybe you forget that the Farmers Walk is a loaded gait pattern. Therefore there is always a shift from one foot to the other. There you got your lever: between the base of support (your foot contacting the ground) and the weight on the opposite side. Beside of that there is always a reactive muscle contraction because of the compression force. According to your argumentation you should be able to hold any weight in your hands no matter what the weight because there is no lever. That’s just not correct. Your spine has to be able to compensate not only for shearing but also for compression forces. According to your argumentation nearly no complex movement would be mechanically efficient: the bench press is not mechanically efficient for the pecs, the squat is not for the glutes and the deadlift is not for the back. The question is always: for whom and what is the goal?
My back got pumped after doing this workout. That’s amazing.
Never heard about farmers walks until I started watching your channel a year ago. It is one of my favorite exercises! I put it into virtually every Strongman circuit I do. Haven’t got to my body weight yet but I add 5 lbs every time and will get there soon enough. Keep up the great work. This is by far the most informative channel in this area on YouTube!
I love this exercise.
Farmers walk is great before deadlifting.
3:29
Point taken, him carrying the weights helped him grow a beard, too.
Should I be doing this every day or just every few days with a workout routine
Hey bro. Im thinking of starting this. I dont have money for those bars. Special made. Cost 300 Dollars each in Denmark. So I was thinking if I walk with a triceps bar on 22 lbs. And buying one more. You think its possible to do it that way. Since its annoying to walk with hand weights with big plates on. What is normal to start with? I’m 6 foot and 220 pounds. Trained my whole life. Many injuries. Would it worth taking like 75to 110 lbs in each hand and try walk 400 yards? Or is it way too much with swings on the road and all`? Hope you get back to me. Im about to order one more triceps bar. Like Olympia style but more solid here in Denmark. Would like your advice. Can I just walk with two triceps bars instead of these special handles? I have one already and can order one for 50 Dollars. They can carry up to 440 LBS each of them. Dont you think its possible instead of these pro bars you have?
@ 6:37 “Just make sure you are not jerking on”
Should we then be jerking off?
I am looking for a good set of top load farmers walk handles. Any suggestions for what ones to get? There aren’t any good suppliers for strongman equipment in my area so I can’t readily go check stuff out
Personally I think it’s a great exercise. I’ve seen great benefits myself, with clients and Dan John, Dr John Rusin, Jeff Cavalier and Dr Stuart Mcgill agree.
First 6 minutes of video yes I am aware that gravity exists ffs
can you do on off days? I would hate to do this after deadlift day or chest/cleans day….
Right on point, funny how people think that the majority of people think the old way is the best way.science is the key..thx Doug you are awesome
I want to do this soo badly.. Every now and then.. CrossFit clowns keep occupying the walking track doing some weird shit.. Thanks for this guys..
He’s not a dude.
He’s a man…
A handsome, muscular man..
Its like a pirate had a baby with an angel…
From a limited perspective, as I am not up with all the science on this exercise, I have neverthelesss trained as an engineer and do functional training and weights. I can see the reasoning behind the video, and strictly speaking it is correct. What I feel and think has been missed is the fact that a lot of unusually heavy weight can therefore be carried with this lift, as he said, due to the vertical position, but what he failed to say were these two things. Firstly, the carrier is attempting to move forward, and this momentum now strains and impels the body to retain its vertical position whereby it can keep hold of the heavy weight, thus greatly working many connective muscles, particularly in the posterior chain and abdominals, which are fighting hard to keep the posture in its safe position, for as he said, potentially it is a high risk lift. And you could add small degrees of difficulty in respect of this aspect by raising your calves more as you walk, or moving in non-linear directions. Secondly, there is a corresponding reactive ground force that is necessary to hold this weight up, and as you can use an enormous amount of weight, this forces the feet, hips, shoulders, fingers and many other small structures to recoil and handle this unusually large weight, especially when it is carried over some distance. And it is in handling the reactive ground force with this really large weight, along with the small lateral movements you make, which makes this such a demanding exercise, and prepares a really solid base for handling other rigorous demands in the gym, such as the deadlift and squat, which will be more specific in their muscular needs.
I have only just started using it, but I sense that this exercise is great for developing the correct alignment and strength of the posture, shoulders, feet and hips, thus developing an increased ability to safety perform all other exercises, so long as it is done sensibly, and within the limits of the lifter, so that weights and movement patterns are introduced progressively. Thus, even after using it several times and only feeling its initial benefits, I feel that this exercise could be the most important exercise for not only power and weight lifters, but other athletes too, especially runners, due to the incredible improvements in the ability to counter the extremely high reactive forces, and the improvements in core and postural alignment, which would benefit one’s breathing technique too. I am now keenly looking at different ways in which I can apply this wonderful, functional exercise, despite the fact it looks the least functional exercise of all, due to its limited motion and vertical nature, but as I have said, I can see its benefits being quite incredulous, so let’s see?
I live on a farm and I usually take two big barrels/cans of oil and walk with them on my jogging route (about 2-3 km). And on the way I can rest if needed. Maybe one barrel weighs around 15 kg. It’s pretty tough, but if any buff dude can do more than me, please don’t brag about that. I’m only a teenager…
Brian, I noticed that with farmer’s walks the biggest question I have is weather to roll my shoulders back ( or keep my chest open), or to not think about their positions in which case they tend to be sitting around the middle or slightly rolled forward. what do you think would be a good idea? unless you are sprinting like in competitions, it seems like rolled back shoulders may be healthier / stronger torso alignment.
Good tips will use them this Sunday. Currently doing weekly 220lb for 1020 yard (around our block) farm walks (incline/decline, we live in hilly area) in our group of 3 (go as far as you can go then switch). Best time so far 13 minutes.
Farmer’s carry is actually a very good exercise. I do not recommend this video
I do this every time I buy a new set of dumbbells at Walmart.
There is many good and bad arguments here. Yes light farmers walks are redundant and better exercises could be employed. But there are better exercises than squats for example car pushes. I have used heavy farmers with fat grips for one year now. What has improved. Grip strength, Iso grip strength. Trap size, endurance, posture and my dead lift has exploded. As a strength athlete I. My 40s it’s also relatively easy on the body compared to axle deadlifts/ walks and duck walks
The outside handle over the inside handle is a very good trick in this context, but most competition implements do not have the plates out on the front like that.
Brian, what do you do with your traps? Do you keep them up by your years kinda like a shrug? Or do you keep them pressed down and relaxed?
i tried this today.. got up to 105lbs.. tried the 110s but could not do it. its alot harder than it looks in this video.. he makes the 120s look easy.
I recommend doing the Bank Robber’s Walk as you carry two burlap bags filled with currency quickly out of the bank.
Impressive! My trainer guides me around the gym obviously not where there are hoards of people lifting heavy weights, but it certainly adds to the challenge when not walking in a straight line. I was able to walk pretty far last night, graduating to 30lb dumbbells in each hand. Of course when I reached home base I wanted to just drop the damn things!
i wear a 30 lb weighted vest plus, 45 lb dumbells in each hand for a farmers walk for a walkaround a park for 15 minutes. when the grip gets tired i rase the weight over shoulders (i call this rest period) when that’s exhausted i transition weight back to my knees. my heart rate riases to 168 bpm. next lap just weighted vest. i made the mistake of doing 5 squats during the first 20 feet once and it made it difficult to complete. thanks for the video i didnt know this was a “thing” but, there is no running with this consistent pace is the key to complete the full 15 minute lap for me✌
Best farmer’s walk is carry one dumbbell at a time. Use left or right arm going one way and use the opposite arm returning to start point. much better
I actually agree with this lol. I thought it was bullshit but the more i watched of the video it makes sense. Ill stick to normal workouts then.
It is very good for strength training, not necessarily body building.
everyone always looks at me like I’m a dumbass when I do these. Farmers walks are one of the most underrated exercises that tests your entire body. Helps build grip strength and forearms, mentally stimulating, creates stronger traps and wider back. Tightens triceps, and stimulates legs. Helps your posture too. I’d throw this up with a deadlift and squat.
This is a great exercise for everyday life. I was actually introduced to this when I was in high school wrestling. ♀️
I really like these “to the point” how-to exercise tutorials.
Is it necessary to walk with the dumbbells or can you just stand there and hold them?
is this effective in building mass in forearms? It seems more like an isometric exercise
Thanks Brian!! I’ recently added farmer carry to my DL day and have been kinda clueless on how to do it effectively. This video is perfect! As always you do such a great job at motivating and explaining. Hope you are over your health issues(!) and feeling strong! Take care man!!
Jesus Christ 120 pound dumbbells I thought I was strong when I used 15 pound dumbbells
look at his closed hand gripping the bar… his fingers penpendicular to the gravitational force acting on them… then ask what does farmers walks train? GRIP! You’re an idiot… you literally defined why the farmers walk is a perfect grip exercise..
Jeff your skinny guy pic reminds me of captain America as a skinny guy before transformation but the same thing is the determation, hard work and courage you both have and deserve it
Wish I came across this channel when i started training, good work champ
That’s the Farmer’s Walk?
I thought I’d be slinging bales of hay or something.
That tip for people who can grip more than they can deadlift is gold. Also, I feel silly I didn’t already think of it.
Everytime I see this dude I think ” oh sweet, Bryce Harper has a YouTube channel” lmao
Another great time if the weight is close to the maximum that you can handle is to start by placing one foot just slightly ahead of the other (not the whole foot, just a couple of inches or so). This makes it easier to get started on the walk.
I do farmers walks with a trap bar and it seems to be working pretty good
I walk fast as hell when I’m carrying 140s lol but with 100s I go slow.
I’m agree in your bodybuilding concepts, this is biomechanically to risky and less beneficial for many people
What i found MOST complicated in this one is proper weight landing at the end, i f**cked my back for a week now and it still hurts. I really cant drop the weight cuz im training at home and at 4th floor, my neighbours would freak out if i just would drop over 100kg:) in this video i saw you landing like doing a dumbell lunges, gonna try this one.
Nonsense. This man does not seem to understand the benefits of isometric and eccentric contractions for building strength, or the benefits of multiplanar exercises, core stability, gait… Any exercise will hurt your back if you’re weak and uncoordinated and overreaching. Labeling exercises as unsafe is just neurotic fear mongering to target injury prone and weak-minded people. He took 13 minutes to say, “I’m right and they’re wrong. They hurt you and I won’t. Buy my book.” No thanks. Not drinking the koolaid.
I prefer to use two barbells…but I own two barbells so….
Suitcase carry is even better. Just use one dumbell and since you are unbalanced it takes way more core and grip strength.
Look at the actual farmers. They all ripped as fuck even though they eat shit. Now talk about how it’s useless exercise mechanically.
He is doing the exercise wrong. If you use 2 weights than they balance out and you don’t get the correct results. You should only use one heavy weight on one side and than switch them.
What if you don’t want to train grip strength and just want to train back, core, and legs? Loading up massively and not having to worry about grip strength failing. Would this not be more ideal?
Any tips for supersets with farmers walk for conditioning (don’t have a prowler )
When I worked in construction and had to carry buckets of Paint, Drywall mud, etc. as well as wood and ladders, that made me gain 10 pounds of muscle I could see in a year of just doing my job carrying stuff around.
For those of us who dont yet have farmers handles how do we progress in adding more weight I do have the spud inc mobile pair of handle which is interesting to work with as you add weight. Let me know big bro
This is actually quite technical in terms of physical contraction, but it completely ignores the vast amount of other stimulus effects of the body, the effect of time under tension, spinal load etc…can have extreme effects in terms of strength, endurance, and general conditioning. My deadlift really benefitted from programming heavy farmer’s walks into my training.
Im a 16 year old ectomorph and im still growing so its extra difficult to get mass
walking and carrying is a very natural exercise therefore the farmer’s carry is an excellent workout. TRUE this workout won’t get you sculpted as much but it’s a total body workout and gets your heart rate up causing you to sweat. It is exactly what we need to boost our metabolism and to enhance our cardio health while building muscle. With that said it is an excellent pre workout exercise right before you hit your weight lifts like bench presses, squats, curls, military presses and lunges. The farmer’s carry was never meant to FULLY FOCUS ON a particular set of muscles yet a whole lot of them ALL AT ONCE to produce that agonizing feeling where you just want to quit but you still have the strength to go on and finish. This is where the farmer’s carry excels compared to other exercises where it doesn’t matter if you want to go on because YOU PHYSICALLY CAN’T causing you to rest before attempting the workout again. When I do farmer carrys i don’t use weights that are too heavy and i dont rest until i complete the exercise. I would carry two 30 dumbells and walk up and down some stairs for 5 min straight without stopping or putting the weights down. Stairs are optimal but it’s okay if you don’t have stairs just make sure you don’t stop and you don’t put the weights down until you complete your time. Focus on posture and keep a steady pace, not too fast or too slow. If you’re new at doing farmer carries, i suggest starting out with lighter weights and a shorter time to complete. That way you can gauge if you need to carry heavier weights or go longer on the time IF you’re not dying and sweating after completing the workout.
Hey Brian, love your channel. It’s helping me a lot as a restart my journey of lifting and being stronger from a hiatus.
Question, though. This works out your flexors only? Do extensors get worked in as well via stabilizing?
Thanks again.
Ahh..F*k you have 10 M subsCool…The videos are useful.

So Workout everyday and eventually you’ll turn into Freddie Mercury
This is the stupidest video ever.. Farmer’s walk is one if not the best ‘core’ exercises EVER!!! Go to Iowa and test yourself against actual Farmers who lift feed in buckets etc!!! They will kick your ass!! The point is to carry the same weight on each side.. Here is me doing farmer’s walk and I am over sixty and this has been the most beneficial exercise ever for me https://youtu.be/U4gqgKmolS0.. I’d like to see this guy who writes book to show his workout routine!!
Can I perform this when I my shoulder injure still not heal? My Pain level is 6.
Meet the polar opposite of AthleanX. Gonna send Jessie over to whip yer’ ass Bruh.
FULL OF CRAP. You’re either strong…OR…….you’re not.
I use this exercise to work the Obliques but I do a single arm FW
I CANNOT BELIEVE the useless video I’ve just ENDURED!!! I only watched it to here the next stupid thing this guy had to say. Do YOURSELF a favor DOUG.. pick up 3 quarters of you body weight.. no let me go easy on you.. HALF your bodyweight in each hand and using the best form possible go for a decent walk and when you get back listen to what your body’s opinion of you is!!! ANY MAJOR EXERCISE can hurt you bad if you do it wrong.. some a lot more than farmer’s walk as well by the way! So everybody let’s all sit on our asses and do nothing cause God forbid we exercise.. we might hurt ourselves!!! From Dean.. this is my girls phone so don’t point fingers in that direction please.. you might sprain one!!!
I can’t even deadlift 2x bw how am I supposed to farmers walk it
I tried farmers walks for the first time today, didn’t really know where to start but I thought my grip strength was pretty good from BJJ. So I grabbed the biggest kettle bells they had in my gym and walked back and forth. I learned my grip strength is fucking terrible.
I do this exercise with ONE dumbbell only, and change hands when reached failure. That way I also work the stabilising side core muscles that keep my body straight and prevent it from being pulled out of balance by the weight of the dumbbell.
Fear if I get to strong, I’ll soon be dating women I wouldn’t have been able to lift before strength training.
The farmer’s walk should be done unilaterally. If you use only one dumbbell you engage way more muscles than if you balance both sides with the same weight.
Great Video Thanks a lot.
I am wondering that if it is normal that my upper trapezius muscles have a little bit pain in the day after doing the farmer’s walk?
(I have already try my best to keep my chest out and activate my teres major & lats)
I’m pretty out of shape and weak. I started doing these for a week, and I already feel much stronger. Best exercise I have ever done in my life. Wow.
started out only able to do 40 each arm for 1 minute, now i can do 110 for 90 seconds…3 sets
Just realized i’ve been doin the farmer’s walk every time I go grocery shopping
What about doing these with lighter weights? I find that using lighter weights works out my traps and shoulders more than heavier weights which toasts my grips more.
That’s some bad physics right there. Check for the difference between rotational motion and 2d motion.
THUMBS UP!!!! LOVED THE WAY HE SO VERY COOL-LIKE STARTED AND ENDED THE VIDEO: “hey what’s up dudes and girls!” love that! “and always, stay buff!” WHO could NOT thumbs up this vid or who could dislike this likeable dude!!?
on another note, i also loved the information. never knew walking with weights had a name. “farmer’s walk.” alrighty then! i shall start farmer’s walking tonight during my meditation walk, with my 1 gallon poland spring water jugs as my weights. lol! no, really. (that’s how i started lifting weights back in the daaaaay when i was about 13!!!!!)

15:25 grip is stronger than your deadlift?
did you mean visa versa??
Joe Rogan recommends doing one at time and switching arms after a half mile.
Broooo that’s why i lost so much muscle in the quarintine i stopped shopping shit and stopped also carrying the things bruuuuuh
i have carpel tunnel in my left hand and this was recommended to me. Im working on going back to over/over grip for DL because i was told it will help with upper back thickness as well. So, do you think i should do thumbless or thumb for the over/over DL and DB farmers walk? liked and sub’d
Saw your video on Mark Bell podcast I agree with you on
“SUFFER BEAUTIFULLY” great stuff man………..
Genuinely carry my shopping 3 km home and thought it felt like a great exercise!
So this exercise is great for grip strength, forearms, and traps? Hot damn.
Hmm did Brian mention how often we are suppose to do a Farmers per week? Is it just once a week? Can’t wait til my 2 pound weights show up so I can get started.
7:04
That tick on the glutes looks like it’s assessing his butt, lol.
I recently grossed out my mom with my forearm development, which is awesome! Thanks for introducing me to the farmer’s carry. It is my favorite exercise!
I Disagree with 1:35… Grip strength is NOT the main objective of Farmer Carries…
How is it not? you’re moving in a farmer’s carry. Holding the weight in and of itself is hard on the forearms, plus moving in awkward positions with a huge amount of weight has you working to keep balance with a significant amount of weight. I don’t know what else it works, but when i’m in the gym, I feel much more worked out on a farmers carry than hanging on a bar or in a vertical dip position. If you’re going to compare, at least be analogous to monkey bars or an upright dip type position where you’re walking across the bars with your arms. Add to your bodyweight for both those exercises and they’ll be a challenge
You body shamed Omar’s calves. But you know what, I’m not going to judge you. I’m not going to answer body shaming with thought police shaming. I’m also not going to ignore the blatant truth, Omar’s calves look like a drumstick that all the meats been eaten off of.
I appreciate the video. I’m trying to get into shape after a long fight with asthma (and the necessary inactivity and steroids that come with that). I like watching the extreme stuff because it’s a lot easier to see mistakes when you’re watching someone lifting very heavy weights (everything is exaggerated). I’m no where near “body builder” level at this point, but seeing where it can go wrong will make my journey a lot safer, thank you.
Couldn’t you have opened with “Dudes & Dudettes?”
What?! Too cringe?
Fuck that is heavy as… I was doing roughly 55,kg each hand. But I am at 100kg body weight….. I could have done at least 10kg extra each hand but I was super setting sleds with em
That Kenny G reference……it was 4 mins not 45 mins:). That´s too much even for holding a breath.
Not related to this, but just came over from Mark Bell, and really liked the podcast as well as the overhead press video. I am building a home gym, and getting back to barbell training. I am curious to know your thoughts on having my one bar (for now) being a thick bar (Ironmind Appollon axle). I have a good offer, but don’t have the cash for a standar, and thick bar at this time.
Having a beard actually helps doing these Farmer Walks. If you can’t grow a beard, then this exercise isn’t for you.
What do you want people to do sit and wear weigh reducing belts
Follow up comment. I wanted to see what noted spinal expert Stuart McGill had to say about weighted carries. Not only does he not think that they are dangerous to the spine, but he highly recommends them for athletic training.
https://www.backfitpro.com/documents/bottomupart.pdf
So Mr. Brignole, please reconsider your position on this exercise, at least with regard to spinal health. I can certainly see how injury could result from abuse of this exercise, but not from proper application (i.e. upright posture, not going too fast, not using excessive weights).
Highly respected fitness expert Dan John is also a huge proponent of these.
Perfect timing. Farmers walks in t minus 2 hours. Awesome video Brian. Only touched 2x bodyweight for 30 feet once and things got a little squirrelly to say the least.
When you can’t do farmers carry’s so you make a video explaining why you shouldn’t do it anyway
Is it just me, or can you carry a heck of a lot more with proper farmers bars versus dumbells? I can carry half the weight with dumbells
Do this exercise everyday if you want to lose your beard, grow a tattoo and have permanent “gotta squeeze this one out” face.
I do this exercise daily, except it’s actually 5 gallon buckets of water in each hand and I’m carrying it slightly uphill for 400 feet. Short burst of cardio, yes. Jacked biceps, no.
great content! Can I use trap bar instead of farmer handles?
I was so happy he said “Facepulls” i actually squealed in glee out loud
This is great thanks for your support ❤️❤️❤️ if you want get in contact with me please im120 pounds. Turn me into what you preach.
Bet there’s a confederate flag behind there somewhere but good stuff
I started farmer’s Walk recently..I do it everyday maximum I have done is 50 kgs
While scientifically you may be correct, you are just plain wrong overall about loaded carries. I’ve been doing them for years and they get the credit for great forearms and traps because I do no direct work for those two body parts. And carrying heavy weights a distance builds mental toughness as well as turning on your cns. You seem to know so much, but by being a detractor of farmer’s carries you’re doing a disservice to anyone naive enough to listen to your advice. I would say mechanical inefficiency can make you stronger and I have my own empirical evidence that proves it.
Brian, thank you for another great video. I didn’t realize that I was doing this lift incorrectly.
Saying that dude is skinny is damaging to some people’s health..if say he is athletic tbh..bad choice of words..
Hey guys if you’re looking for products to help you build muscle and strength then check these out https://fnx.grsm.io/SneakPeek use the code FNXPH40 for 15% off let’s get those Gains
The greatest load on a muscle is when the weight is farthest away from the pivot, or the joint you are moving. Try pushing a weight straight out in front of you and you will see this effect, called “The Law of the Lever”. Farmers carries are meant to build endurance, not strength and are great for that purpose. It’s one thing to dead lift 400lbs, another to actually walk with it. To get the most out of weighted carries you should use unbalanced weight, forcing the lighter side to continually apply force to keep the heavier side in balance.
By effectiveness are you talking about building muscle? Cos duh I think we knew that.
Do a farmers carry with at least 100lbs for a man and 40lbs for a woman in each hand and carry it to failure with multiple sets and tell me that you didnt activate every single muscle in your body especially to your lats, traps and shoulders leaving you begging for mercy
good excercise but my gym is always too busy. too much traffic, not even a clear lane for walk
One of my favorite exercises. It’s nice having to go around people and equipment when the gym is full.
No ads or promos, no long ass intro, straight and to the point. My kinda exercise video!
This is a great advice. I have problem with my flat feet tho. If I carry weight horizontally than my knees and whole feet hurt badly. Need to find an alternative.
Will you marry me?
BW 115 max farmers carry 165lb each hand;) xo
I really like these do and don’t tip videos. I was using your ohp tips today and that shit is legit.
Farmer walks are one of my favorite movements and I greatly appreciate this video for the little tips I can now show people that workout with me on those days.
I wonder if I can do this with packs of water bottles in each hand?
Wait.. The walking isn’t really necessary is it. I mean it makes it marginally more difficult but so would upping the dumbell weight. Am I missing something.
Would be good if you can explain advantage or disadvantages of top-load vs front/rear-load bars. Some front load bars are 5′ overall and some 6′ overall.
It’d be great if my gym went up to 100kg dumbbells. We only go up to 50 so I’m stuck there till I grab some implements.
You’re not a skinny guy unless you can make a ring with your middle finger and thumb around your wrist
Something is missing here. I have been doing farmer’s walks 2X a week for 8 weeks, progressively loading every workout. And the results have been tremendous for my upper back and grip strength. And the cardio…after a twenty minute session I am wiped out. Therefore, this is very efficient for my training goals.
I am not convinced that walking with moderate weight is that risky to the spine. Do you also have a problem with hikers who wear heavy backpacks for hours on end? Do you see spinal fractures in that population?
The fact is, human beings have had to carry heavy objects for eons just to survive, such that we must have certain adaptions for maintaining spinal integrity during this activity.
Until I see hard data on injury rates for these kinds of carries, I will respectfully disagree with this analysis.
My pick up takes longer than the actual walk thanks for the video brian!!!
I use a trap bar a lot to do farmers walks.. is that a good thing?
I can do 61.5 lb dumbbells for my farmers walk, thank you for showing me a better example buff dudes!
Guys check my transformation out if you need motivation, you won’t regret it.
Is that expanding foam on the walls Brian??
Does it seal well?
I was paying attention.
No room for farmers walks here.
Sometimes I wish he could get to his point but towards the end you get it. He is very scientific. If you watch this carefully towards the end it makes sense. Try to just see it from his perspective. It’s interesting.
I did some Farmer Walks today at the end of my leg workout.
People thought I had gone mental.
Shame for them, because they never try anything new.
Thank you for the time stamps Brian! However, I always watch the full video! Will use them to re watch certain parts though
I did quarter mile farmerswalk yesterday… it never fails to suck. It’s great
What weight should I start out with as I have never done these and just now starting strength training in general? I am trying to train for the new Army ACFT and to have enough grip strength for the pull up bar leg tucks. @Buff Dudes Workouts
so basically you wanna do it for as long as you can…ok thats all i wanted to know
Another AWESOME VIDEO…. Thank you SO MUCH for the GREAT TIPS…
me: walking 8 rounds around the hole gym with 15kg weights
other guy: tf you doing?
Brian alsruhe Is it still a low bar squat if you squat narrow.
do your farmer walks, with a trap bar…. why didn’t I think of that!?! It’s soo obvious! Da dumbbells only go up to 125 at my gym and I’m like 200 lb…. I can’t even dead lift 400 yet, ummm suggestions? Just do less? God why didn’t I think of that! Nuff chit chat time to hit da gym. Thanks
I’ve been doing this! I fetch water from school to my house, 10 liters on each arm. It’s good to this exercise being recommended by this channel. I’m not a skinny guy, but a skinny girl. Can skinny girls also do this exercise?
What would be a good alternative as my home gym is not very roomy. Thanks!
i wanna ask what, does this exercise build triceps and biceps muscle???
You’re missing the point. Check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKyPCYDIrfE
In Yoke and frame it’s ok to load different weights in a crossed fashion, right? Same with farmers?
Can’t wait until you get back to 275 lbs again. Love to see you in competition and slaying it.
I love all these videos, personally has gotten a lot of my forms corrected and shot a lot of my PR’s up. Thank you Brian for all the great information.
i do that exercise when i buy 2 cases of beer and walk around parking lot drunk looking for my car
Climbing stairs is good very difficult or Stairway to heaven as I call it!!
So your video is titled farmers walk. However, you are the top result when I type in Carry work out. Is that because of Google just being super smart? Or is that one of your tags? I don’t see it in your description or the title. Thanks for explaining this exercise. I did it three times yesterday at the end of my work out and I can totally feel it today. I think that’s why my triceps are burning extra hard. And why I am feeling sore in my upper sides.
Hello sir, where can I buy your book *The physics of fitness*,I didn’t find any information on internet.please give some information sir.
It doesn’t get much simpler than this just grab some dumbbells and start walking, lol.
You are not looking at this from a metabolic perspective. All isolation exercises are more efficient from a mechanical point of view. Basically people that are not on steroids will respond to the compound exercises better than the isolation exercises as the compound exercises raises the natural hormone response. People on steroids will gain on isolation exercises as their hormones are already artificially raised. So a lot of this info depends on your audience breakdown.
This is a fantastic exercise to help prepare for christmas shopping with the wife…
For someone on roids who has the sole focus of being aesthetic (aka bodybuilder) this video is completely biased. Farmer carries are unbelievably effective for core stability and strength and also build crazy trap and forearm muscle.
I didn’t realize so many years ago that I was doing a ‘Farmer’s Walk’! I know, my form probably sucks but whatever. I keep getting better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhLl7hLsXMk
These happen automatically, every time I have to bring dumbbells to or from the rack!
Hi Jeff, great video! Would you recommend this for a guy with scoliosis and unbalanced pelvis, or other specific exercises to fix that first (if possible)?
Why not just use one dumbbell at a time so you actually test your core?
I carry groceries for a couple miles a few times a week. I’m skinny haha
Farmer grip is actually a very good exercise for grip, strength and endurance. But not particularly good for muscle building.
I have enough equipment at home for building proper muscle everything but the legs (been considering a leg curl/extension machine, but they are expensive and require plates at additional cost). How are these for building leg muscle? My hamstrings and quads need a buff, to be specific.
If you only have a weight in one hand then you also engage your whole core. Weights in both hands balances you out so you don’t use your core as much.
what about doing this assimetrically? lets say with 100 and 60 lb
when i use to go to a gym. i use to do farmers carry all around the weight section. people would look at me like wtf.
6:53 our body is not made of steel more like a band and when you stretch it it will fight against the weight if the muscle aren’t working at farmer carry so our arms and shoulders will tear apart
I stopped watching at 5:30… Does he EVER get to his point???
A great exercise with this is to do 10-12 rounds, at the top of every minute at lets say 75-100 feet. So 1 round you go 75-100 feet every minute. Obviously choose a set distance.
This is a really great way to train this exercise. 12 rounds may seem a lot but you’d be surprised by how many times you can actually do these. The weight can range between 60-70% 1RM.
Getting a job on a fishing trawler is also great for grip strength. You hard-core trainers need to get fishing.
guy says exercise is not mechanically efficient, internet loses its mind.
You need 50, 60 more examples of perpendicularity. Also, you’re missing the point of carries.
so i could just fill up two 20l watering can and do this easily at home right?
All I got is 35s at home. I wonder what weight I should buy next
Should I be doing this exercise in sets/reps or just until I can’t seem to hold the weight anymore?
I do it on my treadmill at home but I have to set tables up to drop the weight on either side
We actually use Farmer’s Carry to train people in the moving business. Picking up a 200 lb. dresser, with 2 people, means they’re carrying 100 lbs. each assuming they’re the same height and have the same wingspan, 50 lbs. on each hand. You HAVE to hold it for sometimes minutes at a time. Believe me, it works.
if you want to have more subscribers then stop posting bullshit videos.
When should we do this exercise? At the beginning or at the end of a back workout?
@Brian alsruthe
What type of farmers walk implements do you have? Brand? or did you make these? they look pretty simple.
I skimmed the comments quickly, but did not see this asked. If it was I apologize, bc I missed it
the farmerswalk is the only exercise that will benefit your life outside the the gym.. carrying all ur groceries becomes manageable
YouTube advice: try to keep your videos under 15 minutes Brian. and as for the title i would have typed
“the ultimate exercise for total body training”.
Nice mala… are you a Buddhist? Just curious I like the religion/philosophy very much. Great video, cheers!
I feel like doing this but at the same time I don’t cause I be grinding modern warfare camos
Super set farmers carry with face pull and see it your selves..

It’s probably one of the best bang-for-your-buck exercises out there because of what it recruits neurologically and how it encourages joint centration. It’s amazing for shoulder rehab and helpful for dealing with scapular winging. The musculo-skeletal system approach is an outdated an ineffective way to approach this issue the neuromuscular one is far superior. Grip strength isn’t about hands or forearms, it’s about shoulders. That said, it is a strength and stability exercise, meant to be done with near-maximal weight and for short distances.
If you doubt what I’m saying, read what coaches like Dr. Charlie Weingroff have to say on this topic.
He is clueless about strongman training. You have to eat a lot more and train gradually to prepare for heavy farmer carries. You can’t just go walk 250+ pounds per hand and not expect to snap in two.
Farmer walks are extremely effective for trap, forearm and core strength. It’s an isometric hold for the entire upper body and a great way to train proper gait, posture and breathing.
“real” farmer carry is when you hold the bucket away from the side of you body so you don’t spill water on yourself. lol! We had all kinds of animals when I was growing up. Can’t even imagine how many buckets of feed and water I carried over the years.
Love farmers walks / zercher holds, isometric pushups got me through quarantine and kept/even gained arm size.
Didn’t even mention the trap development you get from these?
Your opinion on farmers walks is absolutely ridiculous. The Farmers walk is not an isolation exercise. It’s a multi-joint exercise. There is a lot of things going on with farmer walks. Forearms, biceps, delts, traps, lats, core, glutes, quads, hams, calves are all working! You are using almost every muscle in your entire body. Also, you don’t need direct contraction for a muscle to grow. Isometric load can build muscle very well. Plus, do you really believe walking isn’t an efficient exercise? Walking is the most efficient exercise in human history. Walking with weight in your hands just adds to it. I can guarantee farmers walks is great at building muscle.
I do farm walks but another great exercise that I felt made me so strong in such a short period of time is the Prowler. Heavy load and short distance. Load should be so heavy that you can walk at a real slow pace……if your pushing fast the load is not heavy enough. And trust me your traps will pop out and your shoulders, core, and most your lower half body muscles will strengthen. Let’s just say this is a complete bad asse compound movement, that builds crazy overall strength without putting strain on your back or knees like the dead lifts and squats do, and still get similar results if not better!
What about front carries? Like husafell stone walks, sand bag carries. What about over head carries like? What about single sided carries too btw, having one dumbell on one side an walking with it.
Just watched Joe Rogan and he said this is the incorrect way to do it. Only carrying one side at a time better simulates real world conditions and trains more varied muscles, balancing the weight negates that.
2 х 15 л ведра бетона и прогулка фермера приносит не только пользу для здоровья но и прибыль если не обсерешся мясо декоративное
Rob Kearny also says not to stomp around while carrying. I bet y’all’d get along
Ha. Athlean made a video saying that farmer walk should br done everytime you hit the gym. In his latest video about pull up he showed that you should visualise pulling w your pinky and ring fingers as well, great minds think alike
My son is convinced you cannot use wrist wraps for farmers walk…. He’s worried about his grip strength. I told him there are other ways to make your grip stronger.. This framers walk hits your core and outward.. He’s not competing.. I think the wraps would help him do the walk in a more strick motion if he’s not worried about hanging on…. Thoughts??
That grip will also raise your risk of ripping your hands tremendously as your grip fails and it slides down your hand though. Much to high a risk of tearing hands this way in my opinion, Just set proper grip so it doesn’t slide and tear your hands. Love me some farmers carry, but tearing isn’t an option for optimal performance foe sure if it can be avoided.
these guys thought it was necessary to do two videos on the easiest weight training exercise lol
Farmer’s Walk is one of the best strength building exercises for the forearms and traps. You should do it every day
If you really want to double down on the stability, use two 5 gallon buckets full of water, get those farmer traps.
I was in bed for whole next day because of pure exhaustion when first trying farmers walk, forearms grew visually, balance and grip improved vastly in following weeks. I think isometric load of farmers walk makes it safer compared to other excersises. Not sure about spine thing but every standing free weight will compress spine, will it not? Thats the whole point of any excersise to overload muscles and joints in a controlled manner, so they become stronger not weaker.
Passive hangs are an exercise, if you do body weight or gymnastics you will have to get used to the passive hold. Its great for shoulder health but your not trying to load it, it helps bridge the gab for passive to active hang.
I recently added this to my workouts and get an amazing pump. I never thought or was taught to do the farmers walk.
Farmers carry is very good exercise for traps, arms, upper back, grip, core, calves if you dont you should and Dr you firs do some exercise when you talk about them
feel you wrist and how that expands growth ( wrists kill doms after real heavy farmers carry) when do farmers carry it benifts alot muscle s
Farmer walk is a natural activity for human been on daily basis. Almost every day we carry stuffs and groceries beside our bodies and walk.
you are not professional enough to say that, it made me grow the traps and the forearm like no other exercise, apart there are studies that validate it, please inform yourself better.
I wonder what goes through jeffs mind when he sees the dislikes. Like how the hell can you not like the info?
So what if long distance running is something that you HAVE to do. I feel like I’m the skinny guy and being a soldier at the same time is embarrassing as all hell lol.
U didn’t tell when to do that?..i mean…can we do it empty stomach in the morning Or should we have something before doing this?
Time stamps super helpful for the things I’m thinking about that you said and trying to remember the specifics, great job man, great value add
You’re supposed to load up on one side when doing a farmers walk. It’s not nearly as effective when you’re balancing the same weight on both sides. You should really look into Pat McNamara workouts. Much better workouts for people looking for functional strength, not just pretending to be a body builder.
Guys are farmers carry, barbell rows and weighted chin ups enough for bicep and triceps development
Oh shit I’ve been doing this for all my freshman year in gardening
I feel like if Jesse were to be a little more serious he would bulk up alot more
Kind of reminds me of carrying cinder blocks when I worked construction.
A fucking V shreds advertisement on Brian’s channel…..thats heresy
I did theese today, i got up to 25 kg on each dumbbell, my forearms were really tense after that
My arms were burning all day after some farmers walks today.
Problem in my gym they start laughing at me and it’s awkward people think i’m crazy going left and right with same dumbbells one guy said if i’m waiting for bus lol
Dude your videos have massively helped all my lifts. Deadlift, overhead press, pull ups and i never did farmers walks until i watched this video. 69kg in each hand at 100 kilograms bodyweight at the moment.
Holly shit…. This is the first video I’ve realized that Jeff’s Gym is in his house… Look at the open door to his HOUSE! The closed door of his garage, and then just how small the space really is with Jesse walking around… Jeff never leaves his home. He just works out all day everyday, making videos and living his best life.
The hardest part about doing this is putting the weights back after you’ve pushed yourself to the limit
Always takes me ages to get the plates off the trap bar back to the rack lol
How much time should we perform the carry or how many laps and what would be the distance of those laps?
I started a month ago doing farmers carry and my deadlifts improve dramatically including overhead press I have better posture.
I bought instruction from Unflexal and I learned about workouts.
When science fails you. I can guarantee you have never done a 6 week cycle of farmers walk yourself with any sort of intensity. It is probably one of the best trap, grip, oblique, and overall strength builder. it is far superior than probably any other trap exercise for growth as well. You don’t need a study to know this.
Jeff carried his mom to the hospital when she’s about to give birth to him.
Guys could you please help me, what weight should I use for this exercise?
I tried this exercise at my gym today, and I felt that it really gave me a nice burn in my forearms in fact I actually consider exclusively using this exercise for all my future forearm exercise, that’s how much it burned.
It was also fun to just walk back and forth like that, lol.
I had a pile of standard plates left over after switching to olympic, 2 standard super curl bars and some duct tape later and i have 2 great farmers walk bars for super cheap. Just thought i’d share that as here in NZ actual carry bars are…rare and freaking expensive.
00:20 “Step right between TWO PAIR of dumbbells”
Or did he mean one pair or two dumbbells? I know what he meant. Just making sure that I understand your language right.
“you aren’t working any muscles because the force is applied vertically”
“It’s bad for your spine because it has curves in it”
PICKONE
the biggest benefit of the exercise isn’t building the arms, its using your core to maintain an upright posture. Plus every step you take produces instability as the jerk(changes in acceleration) causes the weight to swing. The swinging pendulum puts a horizontal force on your (mostly) vertical spine. You can pick any exercise done with massive weights and point to an injury risk. But when you look at weight training as practicing movement patterns instead of moving huge weights this become a hugely important exercise. I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but people carry things. Being proficient at carrying things is beneficial to your day to day life.
This was a f*n amazing video Brian. Lots of awesome never talked about points that make perfect technical sense
Don’t do heavy farmers walk frequently, got a bad trigger finger from it,now taken steroid injection for it and resting, good over all work out, drawback is our grip fails without doing much to other parts…..
How long should we do a carry to maximize the benefit? I know he says a few laps but that could vary depending on location. So are we talking a minute? 3? 5? Is there a limit, can I just go to failure?
If you do farmer-walk with 80% to 90% of your OneRepMax capacity and walk with the weight until you can’t carry anymore, then it will work as the best functional workout ever.
Works on traps, core stabilizers, forearms, entire arms and legs, posture. The idea is to carry heavy and it will work wonders on the entire body.
Try holding 80 pounds (if your grip is strong enough) perpendicular and see what more than just grip muscles will have to engage.
Do you think one handed farmer walks are beneficial as well? Core stability etc
It maybe not a good bodybuilding exercise but conditioning your grip strength while forcing your posture to stay neutral and busting endurance is a good functional exercise for sure
If that guy is “skinny”, I must be nothing but bone. 5’6” 125lbs
nice i didnt know about this at all..but it looks fuckign amazing..ill be doing farmers walk from now on for sure
Hey brother could you do a video on the zercher carry, Do’s don’ts set ups
Left thumbnail: taika watiti
Right thumbnail: Freddie Mercury
Skinny guy here. I was told this was called the Farmer’s Walk. It can look boring AF, but really the Farmer’s Walk is such a beautifully efficient and functional exercise that will benefit so many aspects of your body: grip, posture, balance, stability when carrying heavy loads, even core/abs.
I have three variations that I do, all of them while carrying the weight up and down a stair case as opposed to a flat surface I find walking in straight flat surface gets me bored very quickly; whereas a Farmer’s Walk up and down a staircase gives me so much more in so little time.
The first variant is with two dumbbells. The second is with two kettlebells. The third is carrying one kettlebell like you would a suitcase this version is great for cross body stabilization and really works the obliques.
Just found this vid and subsequently your channel. Good stuff, man. Subscribed!
So that’s how midoriya got his gains from carrying garbage on the beach
I do this all the time when my mom forces me to help her out at the supermarket and grocery shopping
Hey Brian! What model of New Balances are those in the video, they look light-weight. Due to my foot anatomy and knee surgeries, I do best in shoes that don’t have much of a heel or a thick sole.
Doug Brignole has tunnel vision. I suspect he doesn’t have the mental fortitude to endure the extreme discomfort that arises from taking a Farmers’ Walk to physical failure.
Doing one arm at a time increases the difficulty of the exercise and the rewards. Having two makes it easy to balance them.
Do you have to walk? Wouldn’t your arms still benefit if you just held them in place? I ask because I wanna do this at home but there’s not much free space to walk around with weights.
Welp, I don’t know about elsewhere but actual farmers are sturdy folks who tote and hoist and lift heavy things frequently. Back in the day, you did not find many fat farmers.
Just saying.
