Training to Pass the APFT. After you have a solid and wide-reaching base of fitness, the next step to acing your APFT is to build specific fitness in the areas tested. Adding sets of push-ups and sit-ups, and other core strength and endurance training to your workout is essential.In order to pass the PT test and get at least 80% on each event, you must have dedication, discipline, desire, and determination to do better. An easy way to do well on the PT test is to follow a 3-part training program 4 times a week: Do as many push-ups as you can, nonstop for at least 3 minutes.
The Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) test uses three events to measure physical fitness: push-ups, sit-ups, and a timed two-mile run. Soldiers must score a minimum of 60 points on each event. The test also can affect whether or not you get promoted since scores are used in the Army Enlisted Promotion System.It is comprised with different types of fitness and skills examinations to measure the muscular strength, endurance, cardiovascular, and another physical trait that is needed in the army.The Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) is a standardized test that rates your fitness based on push-ups, sit-ups, and a 2-mile run.
The top score is 300, but whether your pass is based on your age and gender. What is the minimum run time for APFT during Boot Camp? The minimum run time for the APFT depends on your age and gender.Beginning Oct. 1, 2020, the ACFT is the Army’s only physical fitness test of record.
All Soldiers are challenged to pass ACFT 2.0 at the Gold Standard.There are ten age groups: before 21, 21-26, 27-31, 32-36, 37-41, 42-51, 5256, 57-61 and over 62. The minimum score needed to pass the APFT is 60 in each of the three events.

The score for each APFT event ranges from 0 to 100 points; a minimum score of 60 in each event is required to pass the test.These are similar to traditional pushups, but at the down position you lift your hands and arms from the ground and then reset to do another pushup. Sprint/drag/carry: You must run five times up and down a 25-meter lane, sprinting, dragging a sled weighing 90 pounds, and then carrying two 40-pound kettlebell weights.
The result was the introduction of a robust physical training program, as well as the Army’s first physical fitness test. The test consisted of a 5-event battery of events: squat jumps, sit-ups, pull-ups, push-ups, and a 300-yard run ( you can take the test yourself here ), and was designed to test the kind of muscular endurance and anaerobic capacity soldiers would require on the battlefield.The U.S. Army measures physical aptitude through the Army Physical Fitness Test, or APFT, which requires soldiers to complete three events: 2 minutes of push-ups, 2 minutes of sit-ups, and a 2-mile run. Scoring on the APFT is based on age category, gender, number of repetitions performed of the push-up and sit-up, and run time.

What about if you have wrist injury that you have to do fist push-ups ( authorized ) by the way?
On 2 days now, i can do 20 diamond push up, 19 close push ups and 15 wide push up

A good way for tracking where you’re at on push ups is downloading the metronome app. Set your tempo to around 38-40 or wherever you’re at. Set the meter to 1/4. It works for sit ups as well. Also, you can set tempo to 60 at 1/4 and if you can do 60 in the minute you’ll be able to max out pt test easy. Type in metronome in App Store

I dont mind the stamina based stuff. I already run an 11 minuet 2 mile. Its the push ups that mostly get me.
I’m not going to the army, but I will try this. Will also do it for pull ups (supinated close grip, pronated regular grip, neautral wide grip) and when I get stronger I will do it with handstand push ups as well.

Unfortunately, you said it yourself, your best run time was a 13 and some change which scored you a 90%… which goes to show you’re making a video on “how to score 300 on the APFT” but… you’ve never made a 300 on the APFT… catching my drift?

One thing I wanted to say and this is just my personal opinion is that when running or jogging I breath in and out through my mouth and nose I feel like I get in more oxygen that way. But that’s just my PO thanks for your other advice though I’ve applied them to my workout I can see a few changes

Just ran for first-time in almost a year. Ran 3 miles at local park, it’s gravel and uneven path. I also had my daughter in her jogging stroller and was able to run it in 30 minutes. Was hard and I threw up afterwards but I for sure feel better after giving it my all

Don’t feel bad. You literally have to only train the events to 300 point it. It’s pretty dumb.
Form is hard to self-measure with pushups. I found something that sits about fist height or lower and tap my chest to it (don’t rest or bounce). I started out doing a lot less, but quickly and consistently catching back up and should exceed soon.

To pass the 2 mile run, don’t forget to be in the Ninja stance when running, lean forward in 45 degree angle and both hands in your back also in 45 degree angle.

ALWAYS DUCK DOWN WHEN RUNNING UPHILL!!! it’ll help your momentum. Also for every one sit up, count one sit up as one when bringing your right elbow over you’re left knee, then a normal sit up, then take you’re left elbow over you’re right knee and that’s one sit up. equalize your core. focus on it, then repeat.
Lactic acid is energy, not the reason for soreness or fatigue. That is an old wives tale. Look it up. Moreover, you should refrain from encouraging listeners to workout the same muscle group everyday. If you did 400 push-ups on any given day, never do push-ups the very next day. Those muscles are spent. They have endured great stress and micro tears. They need time to heal. Perhaps every other day.
How do you do it.. Every time I try that workout, I have to lift my feet/legs up. Do I just need to practice doing it more? @ 3:00

Are PT test, specifically running, always done on tracks. I live out in the country and i feel like I can run forever at a good pace. I have ran on a track multiple times, but it’s so boring and I don’t feel like I move as fast with as much energy.
Running up steps is a bad idea in terms of injury potential. I’ve run at least 3 miles per day for the past 33 yrs (no, the “33” is not a typo).
Running is my weakness but I love walking long distance with my 2 year old. This video was very helping so thank you.

I just want to say thank you for your videos (“APFT Training”, “Do’s and Don’ts”, and “What to Bring to Basic Training and What to Buy When you Arrive!” videos especially) as they have helped me get ready for Basic Training. I leave in a week to Fort Benning for the U.S. Army and without your videos, I would have been lost. My parents are supportive of my choices for my career in the Army, even my MOS choice. Infantry. Even though they were very alarmed after I told them what the job is and what it requires after I chose it at MEPS. I was offered a better job in the technical/computer science field and I love computer science, but I’m not someone who likes to sit still (except when in Drill & Ceremony) or stay in a chair all day, everyday. I also want to join the Army and Infantry especially because I seek Adventure, Experience, and Traveling. I know Infantry will and can be a back-breaking job and I’ll have some bad days, but who says I wont have some good days? Gotta’ embrace the suck to live the suck. At least I’ll be bumped up to E-2 due to my JROTC Service and Tenure.

i would suggest some theory when running just to save some stamina for the last feets, but of course running at least 4 times a week is what i do

Quick question, you may have answered this before. Can you change your hand position to a wider/narrower position during the 2 minute push up test to put more load on a different muscle?
My advice for getting better push-ups is to practice with a weighted vest… you get used to a lil heavier push-up so when u do them without the vest u do SO MANY and so quick… so far I can do about 50 in a minute 30

shit I’m of shape like hardcore I’ve been hitting the gym lately even doing some cardio but its bad not horrible but if you wanted to join the military not good. I hit 34 in July tried to join in my late teens early 20s but didn’t work out then chronic health problems started in 2004 so yeah pisses me off. but still trying to think Amry is 35 cutoff maybe even though I’m not in you guys are brothers and sisters if my ass was in shape top notch I’d have your side shit I’d be there regardless, not too fond of this imperialist tyrannical globalist shit I believe in the Constitution defending our nation and helping others not profiteering for the elites murdering innocent people and taking their resources. I do believe there is real threats that need to be dealt with in a Ricky-Tick fashion. I also believe with we go into a war we need a peace plan in action. Hello ARMYprinncess!! first thing I love your videos. Im graduating from college soon and have been interested in enlisting for years. I just recently started talking to recruiters. Like I’m sure many people do, I have so many concerns with enlisting. I have pretty soft skin, not the most physically fit, and my leadership skills need work. I know ill miss my family like hell, but I also know how to be away from them thanks to college. Some people think im taking a step back by enlisting after college, but I think its an experience I need and can grow from. My recruiter is male, and he’s great, but I really felt like I needed to hear the women perspective. Thank you so much for your videos, they have made me feel like I can really do this. Right now im working to improve myself physically, and trying to have thicker skin (which isn’t easy to train yourself to do.) I know my flaws, and I know they can be fixed. Your videos really inspired me, and made me feel like I’m not putting myself in a bad situation by enlisting like some of my friends think.
Great tips man, keep up the good work. For me I had a shoulder injury so whenever I do alot of pushups it starts to hurt real bad on my shoulder joints, the way I started improving this I took what you explained in this vid but I started doing with knees bent and so far so good.

About the weight training; when you lift you train strength but push ups for PT are muscular endurance which is why they dont’ correlate. Work on both but endurance is more important in this context!
How did you guys prepare for rucking? I need to do 12 miles in 3 hours or faster
how do you do sit ups without lifting your feet up. I tend to lift my feet up when I dont have any support to hold my foot down.

My best time on the 2 mile run is 11mins, 24sec.
I did 73 repetitions on pushups which is so far my highest score but I’m weak at doing sit ups. By watching this video I think I know what to do to increase my sit ups so thank you once again for the video.

Last year, I was horribly out of shape after a severe back injury sidelined me for years. When I started back to the gym, I could barely bench press 100 pounds. My body weight was 245, height is 5’10” and I’m 49 years old. I couldn’t even perform two sloppy pushups. Yesterday, I wanted to see how much stronger I was. My body weight is still 245 but I am in better shape. I was able to knock out 55 solid, proper form pushups in a row without stopping. My children were shocked and told me that beforehand, that they were “really hoping” that I might be able to do 10-15!!

Tests for the American army are easier than most of the European countries, and lets not speak about the harsh conditions and attitudes here in some countries.
You are lucky to have such a soft conditions there.
In high school I was like 150lbs and did 100 pushups easy, right now Im almost 200lbs and I can do like 50 at most and its demoralizing, although I bench probably 300% what I could in highschool.

All units also have to learn how to perform correctly. l’ ve heard some units just point out at how to get many repetitions but still have incorrect performance. That’s why some soldiers fail pt test at WLC school because there incorrect performance won’t be counted.
Hey Sgt. Masibay I am 26 years old and am trying to get my self into shape to join the Army. At present I weight 260 pounds and a recruiter I spoke too told me he can’t do anything for me untill I weigh 170ish pounds. Do you have any tips on how to get the weight off fast?

It’s better for it to be windy than super hot especially in Texas sgt. Good job on the workout I haven’t done those workouts since high school and it would be nice to get back into those kinds of workouts. It’s hard for me right now to do the push-ups because of shoulder injuries guess just work at little at a time.
I just want to make sure I have a good understanding.
Three days a week do the 3 sets of the macro set (diamond, close, wide)
And one day of the week do a 1 minute max rep test (same day every week) to track progress.
Am I correct?

You should do a video trying the ACFT, my little sister joined the Army and she’s having a hard time staying motivated I’m a SSG in the CARNG but I trained her for the APFT. I need positive people and awesome female role models to keep her motivated.
At 33 I’m still beating guys a decade+ younger than me on the PT test. Its all about how much you want it.

You should have done better, last year at 70 yr I did 60 push ups non stop. would of failed the sit ups as I don’t do them. Just started training again this year so I will have to keep it up until I can get 80. I think they should add pull ups to it.
You can have your feet up to 12 inches apart. But you don’t have to worry about it anymore since we’re going to the ACFT.
Why am I watching this crap? 12 mins on 2 mile run is pretty bad. You should be scoring over 300.

I HAVE THE SECRET TO MAXING OUT YOUR PT TEST PUSH-UPS IF YOU CAN ONLY DO ABOUT 35 ish STRAIGHT PUSH-UPS! About 35 ish push-ups straight is all I could ever do, but I used to always max-out my push-ups at 72 during PT tests. The way I did it is I did 10 push-ups, then rested by arching my back(for like 5 secs.), did 10 more, arched my back, 10, arched my back, 10, arched my back, and so on. This is allowed because you can rest by arching your back as many times as you want within the 2 minutes. I just used to tell the tester person before the test that I have a back issue, so I’ll be arching several times. And they’d be like, ok. This is a sure way to get 72 push-ups in the 2 minutes if you can only do about 35 push-ups straight.

I’m 31 and about to enlist as 11B. My run is good, will be 100% by final test. Sit ups are good. But now after watching this I know how to get my push up number higher. I’m 6’1 and like 145 so I’m pretty scrawny.
Most push-ups I ever did in APFTA was 91. I never seen anyone do more personally.

PT requirements should be the same for men and women if they are to perform the same job. Equality between sexes for the same job same pay same standards.

Guess it’s time for you to take the new physical fitness test call the ACFT (Army Combat Fitness Test). It has 6 events rather than the original 3 and it’s gender neutral, so everyone get’s the same score.
The biggest thing i am impressed with is you kept your fingers interlocked on the situps. I see all these challenges and not a dam one interlocks there fingers.

I was 44 when I retired from the Army.
I still passed my PT Test with a 240 on the 18 y/o age bracket. That was 4 years ago. And I can still score that.
This doesn’t give me much hope. She’s in much better shape than I am.
After a while you know that pt scires are just penciled in if you fail leadership dont want that but youll still get shit for it
