Hey Justin, I just came across your videos good stuff! I want to start selling my micros at my local farmers market. This is just my hobby and not a business for me so i wont be selling nearly the volume you are. My question is do you recommend me getting an LLC and or getting product liability insurance? thanks!!
I admit I just started the video, but I assume the reason has something to do with climate change
The thing is in UK most items at farmers are more expensive. I am okay with making the more sustainable choice, but certainly poverty and those with smaller incomes cannot afford the prices. And I don’t mean ‘a pound a bowl’ types, because I dont think they are bringing it from local farms only the middle man for cheaper produce (ie not pesticide free). Or can someone correct me?
I would if it wasn’t in the middle of nowhere, and you have to shop on dirt and rocks. Impossible for me to do in my walker.
Here in Indonesia, the ppl like shopping at local market even though sometimes the price is a bit expensive than the wholesaler store. People shop there because we know n understand that the profit from the selling can help them (the local sellers) to provide for their family, take their child to school, take them to the doctor if they’re sick, etc basically empower them economically. And also we can build a stronger friendship/relationship with our community, get fresh food (veggies, fruits) we need, and get the least package food that means less waste too (good for environment )
So yeahh I absolutely agree with you, Sir
Greetings from Indonesia❤
ADMIRE younger generation SO much… catching a wake up & informing rest of us… sooner everyone plants their own fruit trees & veggies…healthier…
wealthier we’ll all be…
I entered a “Dream Big” competition with Oprah Winfrey… saying my big dream wld be to PLANT FRUIT TREES FROM CAPE TO CAIRO & THEN ALL AROUND THE GLOBE… NO HUNGER GREAT HEALTH…
GREEDY MONEY-GRUBBING COMMERCIAL WORLD…
PHARMACEUTICAL WORLD INCLUDED…SELFISH POLITICIANS…. NEED TO GO….
Thank you all for your comments! I really appreciate it! If you’d like to learn more about what I am doing to create a more inclusive and equitable food system for all please check out AbesEats.com. Thanks!
This is all common sense. If you dont already know this then you are a dumb ass. If that offends you well that sounds like a personal problem.
I am a small farmers. Not only do we need you to come to the farmers market or find another way to connect, but we need you to understand at small scale we can give you quality but not cheap prices. If if don’t make profit it’s a hobby. I need to be able profit so new potential farmers will be attracted to the industry. Thanks to all.
Over priced veggies…Yippie! Ted Talks are officially garbage. If this guy actually believed his own words he would tell you to grow your own food.
You lost me with the idiotic term food porn. If you’re going to present yourself as a subject matter expert then please try to at least develop a respectable and appropriate vocabulary. You could also say the food is aesthetically pleasing, for example. Thank you.
The problem is that farmers markets are more expensive than typical grocery stores. I love farmers markets, bu they aren’t accessibly to all people simply because of price. Plus they aren’t as convenient (they aren’t as numerous, only open certain days, and don’t carry everything you might need). We need to find a way to incentivize people to use farmers markets more often and make it easier than using normal grocery stores.
Quite simple: A dollar to an actual human being (local producer) is much more valuable than the same dollar to some corporate chain’s balance sheet. Much, much more.
Why would you spend your money inefficiently? Sure, you get a similar product either way and maybe a bit cheaper, but don’t you care what happens to your money? After all, it’s 100% us, people, whose spent money powers the entire economy, nothing else. If you knew that someone takes your money and burns it, wouldn’t you rather spend it elsewhere? Doesn’t it feel good that you get to help someone like a producer or small business at the same time? Corporations can undercut small businesses with the power of scale, so it’s a never-ending cycle of putting everyone else out of business — unless YOU look beyond the few cents’ difference and realize the impact you have with choosing where you spend
2years I got tired on going to Farmer’s Mkt as SF Costco has everything organic at better prices, and Farmer Mkts lead up to the final hour twice a week.
I used to love going to Farmer Mkts on the Peninsula & SF, now no longer!
Farmers are a leading cause of habitat lose, wildlife persecution and carbon emission.
Don’t bother with the farmers market unless they’re vegan and organic.
Yes, you absolutely should, for your health and for your community’s health and livelihood.
Kill the music or make it lower. It’s louder than your voice. Other than that good video. Thanks
Make sure the food your buying though is actually from a local farm and isn’t just grocery store food from the same vendors that are the same quality.
Fruits in season, meat and milk year round, from the local market…
One GIANTIC PROBLEM is farmers markets not located in the US southern states are closed 3-7 months out of the year. What’s your solution now? Thumbs down for oversimplicity.
I have found that my local markets are extremely expensive to become a vendor…its like being shaken down before I even sell a single item? All the advertisements, signage, banners, tents, fees, and time becomes impossible to recoup for a small producer. Frankly, most farmers markets are for high volume sellers.
Thanks friend. We all know WHAT we like, but don’t know WHY we like it. Your video was an excellent mirror exercise, useful in many other areas of life. My first year “marketing” was a super success and quite gratifying. I started by advertising on Yard Sale websites to “Be On The Lookout….what was coming in a month!” I plan on adding very simple (and simply packaged) home made soap and hand sewn market bags to my heirloom, non gmo, organic tomatoes, okra, peppers, etc. Last year was additionally successful in that I was able to expose myself as a seasoned gardener and trusted source for info on how to care for the plants I was selling. The Amish sell in our community and are a super resource. Utilize what’s around you,and don’t be a snob! You can always learn more!
Now raise minimum wage so the poor masses can actually afford to find and get to their local market. Not to mention, have the funds to start their own
I’m praying Mohammad and many Mohammad’s have unlimited children. They would be a brilliant asset to this world. Especially in Europe and America.
Wait, I thought the latest psychotic liberal claim was that farmers markets were “raycist” and a haven of white supremacists?
farmers markets that i have seen are inefficient in terms of labor and costs to transport goods
Growing a garden is actually expensive and it costs less to buy from a store/market. And thank you for speaking out against the stigma regading farmers etc….
Not to mention you get to see the farmers! They’re super nice people who often love what they do. Let them dork about it for a while; I have, and they beam afterwards. Help make a farmer’s day!
Coz the food from the super markets is trash, there I saved you 6 minutes.
Can anyone give me a good camera I’ll give a painting in return. I’m an aspiring photographer and artist
Excellent talk, some things I really didn’t know or really understand….thank you!!
Thanks for your great advise. Likewise I am planning to start a “Quail” farm with a final goal of selling Marinated Quail Eggs in Escabeche. Is an idea and to see your presentation makes me think that I am in the right track.
If they do grass fed animals and no pesticides and all that then I’m willing to pay more and support them directly. Because those markets dont use to be that cheap.
Here local farm produce are on shelves right next to industrial produce in the supermarkets, makes it easier and saves money on distribution for the local farmers, which in turn makes the local produce cheaper. win/win/morechoices/win
Why we should actually address the reason why your local farmers costs keep going up (regulations, taxation, government meddling). How about fix that bullshit first? Then maybe we can buy local for affordable prices. #economics
I am in Mississippi, and sell pastured brown eggs at the Mississippi Farmers Market in the capitol, Jackson. I get $5.75 a dozen for extra large / jumbos and $5.00 a dozen for mixed sizes in the same carton. I have a carton factory near by so I get them hot off the presses for 10.5 cents each. My customers return them for me to reuse several times over. When I started five years ago there were seven egg sellers, now I am usually the only one with eggs to sell. Some others have eggs but on a seasonal manner, I sell year round. My success is attributed to not only offering pastured eggs but eggs that are produced with no corn, wheat, or soy in the supplemental feed. Also my prices were higher than the other dealers (they did not pasture their hens). The quality is what has given me the edge in taking the market over. See my page at [email protected]
Over-thinking ruins you. Ruins the situation, twists things around, makes you worry and just makes everything much worse than it actually is
The problem is that typically the mass suppliers are providing the food cheaper. And people are getting poorer.
I support farmers markets all the time. That being said if the farmers are now taking 90% of the profit couldn’t they make it more affordable?
Phenomenal explanation. I’m a vet hoping I can make this pop in my life. This gives me exactly what I need to be proficient.
Not really any farmers markets around here, the ones that are, you can only go to in the winter, as in the summer all the produce wilts in a short amount of time, also no set space for one. The prices better be the same or less than the grocery store.
But still beware at farmers markets because the farmers don’t all have integrity. My friend once bought fruit from a farmer but found a grocery store sticker on one of them later. Be attentive.
Sounds great but the farmers market prices are about twice the price as supermarkets…
Profits from our local farming cooperative mainly go to fund the Local Only help feed the needy program and to help w those cut off from electric or utilities in the middle of winter here in America’s 1st Municipality aka Summers County,Wv. This is more help than the DHHR esp since their programs have been gutted since the Trump Admin and Lack of proper Governance by Legislature ; yes I do Assert they Do not Care for Doing their Constitutional duties in many areas and I place alot of the Blame on Alec the screw over the People American Legislative Exchange Council who still claims Non profit status WRONGLY. Look them up sometime and understand How Evil they truly are.
Shop Local Not Global.
My grocery store is Union run ; so No I don’t buy my groceries at Walmart!
If You’ld like to donate to Our local help the needy program Look up Fishes & Loaves in Hinton, Wv and ask for Earl ; Earl is a wonderful Man and so are the other people who work or volunteer there.
Have a Wonderful day Good People:)
Love my local farmer’s market. Even though it’s in an area with bad, long winters, it’s open three times a week year-round and has the best tasting fruits and vegetables in the area.
Waaaacccckkkkkk. I thought this was going to include thorough statistics and nuanced explanations. Wtf is this middle school garbage?
In the US Pacific NW we are lucky to have a year round growing season. The produce varies with the seasons and that is hard to get used to. But in the long run it is good to live in synch with the seasons and with the local. We have community markets for food and crafts the become cultural events with music and plays. You can not imagine what a pizza is like until you make one with fresh basil, oregano, tomato, etc. It is not the same thing or experience. The markets are just as special.
Economy Basics:
If you produce something someone can produce cheaper, you die.
Solution = Quality, but the local Farmer isn’t better, its may be Bio, but chemistry is something good.
Great info. Thanks Justin.I’m gonna set it up and its easy cuz I’m in San Bndo.county
Weights and measure lol hashtag but did they die? Them agents get payed by the hour on a honor system like broooo it totally took me 12 hours to type this up foreal foreal lol
Quality brother! Interesting the differences in regulation between Cali and Canada.
Shop at your local farmer’s markets, because in a poor country (like Nepal, where I am from), it is a question of survival for them rather than of profit.
this is awesome! this type of information is super helpful in those beginning stages of getting started. you make it all very approachable. thanks man
I am an Agriculture under graduate student…. the major problem in market is farmers are not paid fair for their service. I have practiced cultivating crops and paddy. I know how farmers dedicate their time and everything just to feed us 3 times a day. So value farmers and give them a support….
If your just selling eggs, how do you make your stand appealing? Any suggestions would really be appreciated.
Thanks for this post. Very helpful. I want to start a poultry farm and fishery.
Just make sure the farmers actually are growing what they’re selling. There was a sting-type investigation vid on this 2 months ago.
Hi whoever reads this! I am a high school student from California doing a senior project on Farmers Markets. If you have a minute to fill out my 3 question survey, that would help me out so much. Thank you! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/16_78dkpDWqLX2HMwIKQiAacb-kxoyEdQlUwlyFvgsgQ/edit
Cool background music! It was also really nice to show information from county website! Make it a beautiful day!
How about some photos of your farmers market stand? Brandino brings up a good point but obviously the idea is to sell and be busy. Not talk to someone for 30 minutes while everyone waits. Hopefully you’re in a market that is busy enough to allow you lots of sales.
Love it! The farmers I speak to have difficulty with the marketing aspect of the farm, since producing their product is their passion and expertise. The appearance of the booth is SO important, especially since someone who is further from farm life has that big picture perfect grocery selection in the back of their mind. It takes only a few seconds to see if this is a booth you want to stop and take a closer look at! Thanks for the vid!
I came here to see breasts.. I’m disappointed…
Although this is good info.
5:10…Create an operations manual…. dam! that’s some simple but brilliant info there wish I could give 2 thumbs up!
I went to a farmers market and this one man selling hog meat was making free BBQ, and people were always surrounding his booth. He’d give a little brochure of his BBQ recipe for every purchase. Obviously more costs cutting into his profits but I’m sure he has a ton of repeat orders.
Thanks for the tips, really enjoyed this, going to come in handy:)
Great video! Thank you for sharing your expert advise! I’ll be using your tips as I open my own booth at our local market this spring!
Take our survey and learn on how to triple your profit without tripling your inventory if you’re a vendor at farmer’s market, popup markets, swap meets, tradeshow https://go.bucketforms.com/sf/8050b38d
111,000 views. I just had to say it. So aesthetically pleasing.
I have 2x more farms on MY block than houses. The more you know…
I mean they are tiny, but they are farms nevertheless
i go to my local farmers market here in mid Michigan and most vendors are pathetic. why do I see alot of fruits and veggies with the “number code” stickers on them like they got them at a store and are re selling them. I don’t get it. maybe I’m wrong, but when I go to a farmers market, I expect every seller selling their food was grown by them and preferably organic. I’ve asked the simple question numerous times, “are these veggies sprayed with anything?” and the answer is usually, ” I don’t know for sure.” wtf. next. if any vendor cannot answer any questions you might have and don’t feel offended by them, move on till you find one you can trust.
Great talk starting a JS marathon today…:) Very interested in getting heavily involved in a few things you’re heavily involved in.
Awesome! I’m about to start my first tour in a market. I’m kind of petrified actually. I’ve gone broke trying to grow natural food, lived in a tent and everything for this. Loved this. Could use more advice too
To John Suscovich
Hi i was wondering ive i could have a FREE COPY of your book please im interested in it but i dont no money to buy it with i very interested in chickens as i look after 3 at school at lunchtimes. please can you reply back thanks
from gosportferryfan
I haven’t read down to far however I haven’t found anything about food handling licenses? do you have to get any of that or does it depend on where you are selling?
Hi there. Seen a couple of your videos. Nice presentation. Great choice of words. Very informative. Just a question what was your business/ job before you got into growing? You definitely are from a corporate background. I can just recall some of my meetings & office presentations when you talk. I think that’s really great.
You have a lot of good advice here. The signage is also a good investment. It really is a deterent when nothing is marked even if it’s layed out in order.
It’s always get to great information like this. I currently sell to the restaurants and they buy my microgreens because they bring a lot of color and taste to the table.
Your 100% right presentation plays a huge role,,,
My only advice I could add to it is,,,stand out with a point of difference compared to your competitors.
Am definitely going to use the recipe ideas,,,when I hit the local markets.
Happy Gardening/Farming
Marty Ware (Australian Micro Farmer)
ps: Thanks so much for the advice.
Love the new look took me a while to realize it was you but recognized the voice. Farming is the future don’t give up. Thomas Jefferson advocated, to get into the least foreign entanglements possible. Industrialization had its place. But subservient to a farm. And every man should own land. So that his labor remained on his land 1799.

lose the ink or cover it if you want to more respectable, otherwise you will lose respect, ink is not clean..
I was selling at weekend markets in 1980,,, If you have a great product you are 75% the way, then you have to offer samples and chat, job done
Hi John, great videos. I’m trying to learn about the logistics of bringing frozen chickens to the markets and sitting there for 5-6 hours. Do you just bring large coolers? If your goal is 20 chickens, that means bringing 25, right? Just hoping to get close parking? Have you run into any regulation in your area in regards to bringing in the frozen chickens or precessing the chickens at all as long as its done by the processing plant, no issues? Also, would you be willing to do a video specifically on your operations manual and show how it actually looks in print, many of your videos are great on the white board, but you mention you put it to print, what does that look like? I can rattle off how we do things, but to put it to paper is challenging. Thanks!
Nice starbucks product placement lol Justin is selling out! Justttt joking lol
I love studying about a lot of stuff I’m weighting about farmers now and market
Thank you! That was an amazing video with real ideas to implement on our daily routine with farmers market! Will be doing it all
It is sad that you are correct my friend. Don’t fight the man, embrace him. I’d wear ripped up jean shorts, boots and a flannel T shirt every day if I could. I make allot more money not.
My farmers markets are dominated by pop-up vendors selling the latest Instagrammable fusion food. Good for them. I’m all for small business but I way prefer roadside/parking lot fruit and veg tents which I go to just about every week in the summer. It really is a great way to help the local farmers make a bit of profit on their surplus.
We decided to ditch the table covers. Wind and weather in general makes them a pain. We just use new nice clean tables.
Unfortunately, to feed this overpopulated world, we need the most efficient agriculture we can get. For the amount of product, for nutritional value, to reduce environmental impact. Local farms are just not that, they cannot compete as long as they keep on doing things the old way.
What needs to change is policy, local farmers do not have access to new technologies and methods or have to pay huge royalties or license fees, causing them again to not be able to make a living on it.
What about prices? Some people can’t afford to pay farmer market prices?
Thank you John for this great and useful advice which I need.
Good video. Are you looking for online local food market with highest quality and quantity? If yes, then you are on the right track where you get best foodstuffs at (Harvest Order).
I’m not even a farmer (I just went to my local farmer’s market this morning), but I love this. Great, no-nonsense advice. Thanks:-)
You drain every bit of fun out of the system it’s a farmers market it’s supposed to be laid back and easy going, a good product and a friendly person will sell itself. People become very loyal. Also, having several people gathered around is a selling point, it points people to the fact that it must be good stuff. You do NOT want them in and out.
