Choose healthier Mexican beans. Black beans are an excellent choice for most people. They are low in fat, high in protein and provide plenty of fiber. They get a thumbs up as a low-calorie Mexican food. Refried beans may sound like a good choice, but they are often prepared with lard, cheese, and bacon, making the calorie and fat counts quite high.A great way to eat healthily at a Mexican restaurant is to choose grilled foods.
Instead of ordering a chimichanga or taquito, opt for steak, chicken or shrimp fajitas. Fajitas are much healthier than fried items but are just as filling; they taste even better when flavored with peppers and onions. Be careful with margaritas.
Pick lower-calorie side dishes. Black beans and corn with rice are a healthy side. Avoid refried beans, as they are frequently made with lard. Salads are a good choice for a side dish, but be.
Hold the chips and salsa, or consume less. Chips and salsa are normally served as an appetizer, free of charge, at Mexican restaurants. However, those extra calories add up fast.
A typical bowl of chips at a Mexican.Mexican food by nature can be a trap for calories, fat, and sodium. The fried tortilla chips, high-fat meats, sour cream, cheese, guacamole, refried beans, and deep-fried combo dishes can really.
Chilies are known to boost your metabolism. Season your dishes with Mexican spices such as cinnamon, allspice, oregano and cloves for a healthy, flavor-packed dish. The fresh flavors are satisfying, which means less likelihood of craving unhealthy foods later. The pads of a prickly cactus may seem like the last things you’d want to eat, but this authentic appetizer can be one of the most healthful dishes in Mexican cuisine. The leaves are often cut into strips or small squares, and then blanched or fried.
When trying to eat a healthy Mexican meal, portion control also comes into the picture. Having cheeses, fried foods, chips, and sour cream is okay – in moderation. Asking for minimal toppings is a creative way to create a healthy Mexican dish.
Nachos, chimichangas and chile relleno can be healthy Mexican foods in smaller proportions. Most Mexican restaurants have healthier grilled items, including fajitas and fish, chicken or beef dishes. Add flavor to these dishes with salsas and grilled vegetables.

Order a cup for an appetizer instead of chips and dip. Steak, Black Beans, and Pico. It’s super important to keep that water intake up, especially when consuming a higher-sodium meal. Lemon water will help even a little bit more.

i love tacos with tons of salsa!!! why did you want to sub with rum???
I noticed that all these “How To Order….Without Blowing Your Diet” videos mainly have white people in them.
I LOVE mexican food and I think it’s very healthy. Sure, some things are high calorie, but high calorie does not mean UNHEALTHY. Unhealthy food is empty calories and mexican food is packed with nutrients. I’m vegetarian so I can’t have lean meat and avoid the cheese, but meat eaters could do that. Since I have to have cheese, sour cream etc, I wouldnt eat it every day. But to say its unhealthy is wrong!
@koreangirl891 No… You’re missing the point. They put different countries because if you’re American you know what to eat (healthy) and what to stay away from. They put these videos to help you know what to stay away from (fat) and what is ok to eat. It isn’t indirect racism and I thought MOST people knew what they were trying to come across on.
damn americans are good at diluting culture with their bullshit. this is something i know i’m gonna have to face later on in life when i visit some other country and there’s an angry mob pointing at me going, “it’s-a muriken! get him!” fuck even our asians are startin with that raw food bullshit lmao why did i start hating american diet the second i watched this video? AMERICAN’S NEED TO GET THEIR OWN STYLE OF COOKING BESIDES BARBEQUE! AND STOP PUTTING BACON IN EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN!
PEOPLE TALK SO MUCH SHIT WITHOUT REALLU KNOWING ABOUT OTHER CULTURES STFU!!!
Video: do you order the same thing every time
Me: no I know what I like and I get what I know I like
mexican food is one of the best in the world….oh my god the fucken tacos…uuhhhhh….fucken goood…tortas…..fucckkkk…..im hungry now…..
hmm i never have seen a mexican restaurant; i thought there was just taco bell lol
I am visiting mexico for a week, I am on a 1500 calories diet and i would like to maintain it whilst i am there. Could you please recommend some options. Thanks
@morenoven I have never seen a fat cow. They are just large animals. Know the difference between fat and large… fat is adipose tissue, being large doesnt mean fat
Not all latin food is similar to mexican food. Is correct to call “Mexican food”, is not ofensive. You can order “salsa banderita”, made with diced fresh tomatoes, onions and peppers,
refried beans are only fried once? holy shit, no way, mind blown.
If your Mexican you can just cook this bomb ass food at home, chilaquiles, enchiladas, mole, posole, tacos de Asada….
Yeah my family can make these and they are delicious. My mom makes amazing chilaquiles. One time we were only making enough for a few of us, my brother told my aunt then word spread to all my immediate family. Everyone came and my mom had to make extra xD. Like we have to keep quiet sometimes or the whole family wants to come over to eat. I mean none of us mind that, but my goodness the dishes hahaha.
Wow.. this comment was a little off.. but it is true tex mex is awful when it comes to diets.
If it’s served on a flat fried tortilla, it’s probably a tostada, not a chalupa. It’s hard to find a good tamale that tastes worth a darn, they’re usually too bland. But I do love a good chili relleno!
Chilaquiles is a new one to me, though. I’ll have to see if anyone local has those.
Great video! Make some more of these with different restaraunts please!:)I simply love the Eat This, Not That! Series. I highly suggest those to anybody to pick up a copy.By the way Sarah, I thought you were doing that one special diet where they bring you food? Is the week over and getting back to normal eating? Just wondering:D
thats not a chalupo, thats a tostada. chalupa are staked little tortillas seasoned with salsa shredded meat and chopped onion. i{m a 5th generation of poblano lander.
yeah they have ceviche!! it’s with shrimps and guacamole!! i don’t like it but they say that it’s delicious!!!
Nice video (nobody wants to become obese) but first this is not real mexican food, every dish had lots of (american) cheese and only the quesadilla should have it (and in Mexico we have quesadillas without cheese, like huitlacoche or Zucchini flower), then a lot of mexican food is veggie, so you can eat a mushroom soup, chiles rellenos (with fresh cheese), rice and beans and your eat it with soft tortillas (not fried nachos) and there you have a low calorie meal…
Wow people are so mean and trite in their comments. Thanks for helping us navigate an American-Mexican restaurant!
Don’t get tamales they’re not good as people hype them up to be
@Ichigosistershadow1 hahah, you are so observant!!
Nice one, I totally agree ^^
I was waiting for something different from every Mexican restaurant I visit. Boo!
True mexicans never get fat, even the wealthy ones. The only reason people get fat is because they think they are eating mexican food, while in fact they are eating TEX MEX. TEX MEX is awful, and it is loaded with alot of calories. Typical true mexican food is very healthy, it involves alot of fish, fruits, and corn.
no they already did that one, it was the first how to order food one

Tina ‘s eyes and smile beautiful, I’m distracted. Now I’ll watch the video.
What’s up Hot Girls. You want to try my big meaty Avocados.??
Your average fat fuck from the us will eat the entire thing on that table
No love for cochinita pibil, pozole, menudo, birria, huitlacoche, tortas ahogadas, etc?
I’m mexican, and I think that this restaurant have very, very mexican food, greetings I love it¡

How to Order in a Mexican Restaurant Without Blowing… HAHA!
Just eat at a NOrth American Mexican restaurant. In search of ‘authentic’ Mexican food, when we went to Cancun, we always took a cab into the city. Food was terrible. Maybe because the quality food was not affordable by the native population? Either way, the best food was on the island the tourist area.
If you are in an authentic Mexican restaurant, and they have tortilla soup, you are not in an authentic Mexican restaurant.
What the fuck are any of those soups listed? A real Mexican restaurant would have Posole, Albondigas, Sopa de Fideos or Menudo.
I had authentic Mexican once. I hadn’t even walked out of the place before my stomach started churning.
You are right, however, you can make it less harmful for your health. I am vegetarian, and I know a lot of vegetarians who eat saladas with huge amounts of dressing and cheese.
I’m ok with vegetarians/vegans or even meat eaters who are concerned with animals cruelty and choose cruelty-free products, but those who are concerned with their health and create this “healthier eating” scams just need to do some exercice, then they can indulge themselves as they please.
Well said, just like in Mexico we have our mexicanized hamburguers (in which we add grilled pineapple and onions, avocado, jalapeños, pico de gallo and ham)
todo esto es comida areicanizada!!! ugh me cai tan gordo que todos piensen que solo comen tacos los mexicanos!!
FLAN!!! If it is good flan, it won’t have a lot of bubble holes in it. It should be creamy to your tongue. The caramel sauce should be a nice amber. Then you sprinkle Triple Sec over the top. Aahee! To die for!!! Haven’t had good Flan since I left AZ. If the restaurant does not have good Flan, I never go back. Flan is not a pudding, it is a delightful custard.
In authentic Mexican restaurants I order gorditas,Caldo de res, Tortas and other things not listed here..
All the foods have a different texture but IT ALL TASTES LIKE A FUCKING NACHO
JK Mexican food is great I prefer it over anything
One meal isn’t going to make you go up a dress size. Jesus christ.
Chile Relleno…and or mole are my go to, how I judge a Tex mex or Mexican restaurant. I’m a texan
before i teleport outta here i just wanted to point out something. pause at 2:15 and look at the chick on the left. that’s the general mood when eating with chicks that are on a diet. most likely from LA. that’s why i’m on the other side of the US. k bye.
@morenoven Cows aren’t fat, they are large. A cow’s body is hard with minimal fat. Duh
So THAT’s what TopGear hosts think all mexican food is grilled and with cheese on top, lol…
Didn’t know chalupas were Mexican, and I’m Mexican. Barbacoa is sheep only, the goat is called Birria.
o el clasico cabrito de aca de monterrey o sopa de cabrito, machacado, salsas
This is a damn joke. Most “Mexican” restaurants outside of Mexico don’t even have tamales. Do you have any idea how much effort goes into making those things?
I implore you to change the name of this video to “Things You Never Knew To Order At Tex-Mex Restaurants”
Otherwise you would have listed menudo fam.
@SaraxBella You are crazy. First, learn how to spell. Second, real mexican food is probably one of the fattiest group of foods in the whole world. They fry their beans in lard, they smother everything with queso fresco (made from whole milk). They cook everything with choriso which releases tons of saturated fats into the dish. The meat they use isn’t the leanest, the list goes on and on. The reason why they aren’t fat is because they work all day.
@MrSouthphillyitalian lol…well I’ll the girls out and then eat the food….
Chains always use premade food and drink mixes with sugar and corn syrup in them..Stay away from the chains and you will be 2 steps ahead of the game already.
@bononcrusher2 maybe cuz in Spanish is “Refritos”. While “Frito” means “Fried”; in Spanish when you add the “Re-” part you are meaning it like something “over done” or “done way too much”.
So… “Refritos” would be similar to saying “Fried too much” or “Very well fried”.
No sé si tiene un nardo en la boca…porque no se entiende una mierda al escucharla pronunciar”CHILE REIEIEIEIENOI”…
only american dishes have so much cheese… true mexican dishes rarely even use cheeses or frying options. Tacos de lengua, menudo, sopes, birria, coctel de camaron, etc people need to stop thinking of junky americanized “Mexican” foods as “Authentic” try going to mexico and asking for “Chalupa” or a “Gordita”
yup thats true mexican is healthier than american food cus over there the food is organic no chemicals use and usually over there ppl eat nopales with unfried beans nopales are the vegetable from the cactus
mispronounced chile relleno. mole poblana de guajolote no problem but chile relleno the announcer kept putting an improper ñ at the end. It’s rayYAYno, not rayYAYnyo. I guess I should commend her for not sticking and L in the word: rayLAYno
all that food its kinda snak for us the real mexican food its way so diferent.
am… that is not a chalupa…:/… this is a real chalupa https://cdn.kiwilimon.com/recetaimagen/2980/2159.jpg no chingaderas!
naah! eso no es comida mexicana mejor prefiero comer Gorditas Enchilada chliaquiles aunque son casi los mismos XD
Was it really necessary to show the guy digging the eyeball out of the goat skull? I think we could have omitted that shot….
American tex me cuisine sucks. I’m mexican and I extremely hate all that garbage meals like chimichangas, hard-tortilla tacos, chilli, all that shit.
I love Mexican, but I dont go out to eat much anymore. So hard to find things to eat other than salads. Can you do a video on what you can order if you have to eat gluten free?
And next time… Things to Never Order at a Mexican Restaurant: everything. Bland, high-calorie peasant food with some of the shittiest cheese.
Get tired of Tacos? Where the fuck have you been eating?! lol
Thanks Sarah! I had Mexican food yesterday for lunch and I asked the server for a vegetarian burrito and she came through with a side of rice and beans. It was delicious. It’s amazing that this small Mexican restaurant was able to do that.
Real Mexican food is one of the best!!.. it has everything, it´s so complete, so many fruits and vegetables, etc. etc….
I’m a waitress at a café/lunch restaurant and I’m told by my boss never to say anything but “Yes, it’s made here from scratch” even though only half of our dishes actually are. I’m sure he’s not the only boss like that so don’t trust everything you hear!
i just get the nachos every time soo yeah idk why im watching this
Deutschip you are such a snob, and uninformed too, mexico is a huge country and the food is different all over
Mexican food SUCKS!!! Looks like PUKE!!! Build the wall!!! MAGA!!!
lol dont order the salad, it has more calories than the big mac!!
im not joking.
Gazpacho is from Spain, not Mexico. And Ceviche is mainly from Peru….
“Relleno” is pronounced “re-YAY-no,” not “re-YAY-nyo.” There is no tilde over the “n,” as there is in “jalapeño.”
Oh yes. I never knew to order TAMALES at a Mexican restaurant
These broads think it’s chic to turn fattening, filling food into healthy bourgeois cuisine. Get over yourselves. If you want to stay thin you should eat a homemade salad or if you want to be healthy don’t eat Mexican at all. I love Mexican food just as it is made (not light on the cheese) and I exercise regularly so I don’t think about how many calories it has. It’s not chic to glamorize regular food (notice how she talks-up the Quesadillas (“we’re in a fancy restaurant….pfft!). Idiots.
MASHED Jamieoliver I wonder what the Ancient Azets would think of the modern day Tamales? I’m sure Jamieoliver could come up with a recipe for a Tamale that can be made {ready to serve} in 30 minutes {or less}. ➕
Woah she said negro!! YouTube demonetize this video quick! Ubisoft quickly ban her from ranked and casual matchmaking in rainbow six siege!
Thanks for the help. I used to assume that all Mexican food was metabolism boosters.
Real Mexican soup has a goat’s hoof in it floating around around with a half of an ear of corn!
Chile Relleño? Lol just say it how it’s spelled: Relleno “Reyeno” for English speakers
@bononcrusher2 Because in Spanish re means over done instead of done over:)
Are you serious? If this is the first time that you have heard of these items…. Sucks to be you!
Well fish tacos are actually quite healthy, but anything from taco bell is not that good/healthy lol…
I am surprised by how accurate this video is. You actually listed real Mexican food. My fellow Mexicans tend to act very defensive whenever variates of our cuisine cooked abroad are mentioned, yet they have no issue eating tweaked versions of sushi and pizza, lol. Food is food, just enjoy it.
That is all Mexican-American fast food. If you want healthy Mexican food, you need to make the food that Mexicans prepare at home. For example, last night for dinner we had: grilled nopales in a tomato chile sauce, black beans, sauteed zuchinni/corn/tomatoes, rice with poblano chiles, and pork chops in a chile/tomato sauce. Mexicans actually eat ALOT of vegetables, and our cheeses(cotjia, panela, queso freso) are more similar to European fresh cheeses than to American gloppy processed cheeses. We also eat alot of healthy soups. There are plenty of recipes online and chefs promoting true home style cooking (Pati Jinich from PBS). I hate that Mexican food gets so misrepresented in the U.S. as chimichangas and huge burritos with sour cream when that is not how we eat.

How to Order in a Mexican Restaurant Without Blowing? Erm…
i work out in the mornings ( between breakfast and lunch) so when I make my protein shake how should i do it? have the shake as my lunch? or have it with other food? thanks i highly appriciate this!!
you’re going to die anyway. lol diets. you know what’s better than dieting? doing some real fucking work.
Didn’t really need to see the guy sticking a fork in the cooked animal’s eye at the end…
That little-girl perky voice is far more annoying than any Mexican food. (I think she means Americanized Mexican food)
@ElPerpuli I am definately ignorant for posting the truth about how most Mexicans eat. Don´t get me wrong, I am not Mexican, I am from Argentina. However I have lived in Puerto Vallarta for many years. I know how they eat. They eat close to 25 tortillas a day, and every single tortilla has refried beans inside. Like I said, they don´t get overweight because they are always moving. I see many Americans on vacation and they are all fat because they eat, drink a beer, then go to sleep.
yeahhhh i nevvvver knew that i could order tamales at a Mexican restaurant.. you fucking twats
Its “guacamole” not guacamolee it dosnt have the long e sound!
Chiles rellenos are high up in my favorite dishes of any sort. They’re usually the very first entree I try at any Mexican restaurant that’s new to me.
almost everything in this was wrong, true soft shells arent fried but they are mainly lard and white flower which is like all fat, and alsowat type of hotsauce looks like that!, and seafood at a mexican resteraunt?!?!?!
I thought barbacoa was soft meat from traditionally the tongue of the cow and sometimes the cheek or the stomach of the cow.
I love Mexican food! Tamalas, Chalupas, Chiles Rellanos & Barbacoa (cow head meat). Just to name a few…
true that.
yep, there is a large variety of healthy non fat dishes within mexican cuisin.
All the fast food type chains of “mexican” are really a greasy-cheap-industrialized imitations.
It’s so funny how Americans have distorted what -realMexican food is. They’ve changed the recipes so much the customers in Taco Bell are actually eating some random dish.
Mexican food is healthy, and along Chinese is one of the bests around the world. Is so sad Americans like this girl have this kind of thoughts about it.
If you want to eat healthy, stop eating burgers, hot-dogs and fats.
Chilaquiles aren’t made from stale tortillas. My mom fries them fresh.
Wait…did you just recommend soup at a Mexican restaurant and it wasn’t Menudo? Who is the doing the research here?
@MereLee I mean look at him through out the video he looks pissed about everything she is doing..If your gonna try to watch your calories then go without your husband or whatever because it’s unfair to him that you may not want anything when he might.
@SaraxBella they use alot of oil…that is why even is mexico alot of the people are unhealthy and overweight.
I feel so bad for the man in this his wife or girlfriend gets rid of the sour cream and cheese just because she doesn’t want it doesn’t mean he doesn’t
Well, yeah I agree. The advantage was there were only two customers in the restaurant. It’s a new restaurant that just opened up. A friend of mine told me to check it out. It wasn’t as fancy as the one you were in but I did feel like I got transported to Mexico. The only fancy thing they had were these toothpicks with a tiny Mexican flag attached to them to keep the burrito together.
I don’t think I have ever had any barbados that did nit taste like plain slow steamed meat. It’s pretty underwhelming compared to U.S. barbecue. I don’t think its even the same thing and that may be part of my anticipating it to be more flavorful. I’m talking about Lexington, NC barbecue, not the crap with the opaque sugary glop on it btw.
taco bell is mexican food, white america think hamburgers and hotdogs are american but it is geman food..
AWESOME TOPIC! I LUV mexican food! and i’ve a book called “Eat This Not That”. Perfect Topic! THANKS SARAH AND DIETHEALH!:) Very informational.
dieter”do you have anything that doesn’t have fat in it?”waiter/waitress”water it is”
Always cut your burritos at a 45 degree angle. The same goes for your courgettes, cucumbers, most veggies, and some fruits.
As for this food, it’s not really Mexican. It’s more Tex/Mex, which is different from the awesome food one gets down in Mexico City and areas further away from El Norte.
I got barbacoa tacos from chipotle once and got some type of food poisoning. I mean in the bathroom ALL night with severe stomach pains. Haven’t eaten there since and probably won’t ever again.
Hahaha!!! R u serious?! You should go to a mexican restaurant. The food is delicious!!!! Im not only saying that cuz im hispanic….it really is delicious!!! hahaha
Well its like you said… “check out the number of large bodies munching down on this stuff” its they’re choice for chowing down like crazy LOL but most Mexican food is usually quite healthy. You just have to order the right thing and have portion control. I mean at our house when we have family gatherings we typically only use fresh ingredients and always grill not fry. We also ALWAYS have fresh tomatoes, lettuce, homemade corn tortilla’s. Not the Americanized stuff (like chipotle) gross
Living in San Diego, this is truly one way in which I’m blessed. Sure, I can go to Green Burrito, DelTaco or Taco Bell, but why? In less than a mile, there are 4 taqerias near my home. Genuine Mexican food for about the same money as the chains, and sooooooo much better.
Sorry, just like Cacao, Banana’s are not from Mexico originally and banana’s are from the jungles in India, China, and Southeast Asia. So the Aztec’s couldn’t have used Banana leaves for food preparation, they used corn husks which I think is so much better and not bitter.
Its so funny that they are talking about a mexican restaurant and the background music is from hawaii hahahahaha
thank you, very much. pero aclaro que la comida mexicana es muy saludable… en Mexico
Southern Cali and Tijuana, baja Cali Tacos al pastor, de Cabeza, de Lengua, de adobada etc…. burritos,Carne Asada fries, tortas, sopes, chilaquiles, birria, carnitas, menudo, quesadillas, pozole, mole etc etc etc and the refreshing horchata, tamarindo, jamaica drinks. Mexican food and the varieties of rich foods. There is just so much to list but i leave you with. this short list, there is just endless of the mexican food because it’s from every region of México.Gotta Love the tortas de tamal in mexico city and the high kitchen Level in Mexico City and Southern Cali apart from the fast food taco shops.
Great suggestions on eating healthy. However, no chips, taco salad without shell, no beef and no refried beans pretty much eliminates the main derivative of Mexican cuisine. But that’s the reality, it takes a sacrifice to keep calories low.
