I think you should do flat and incline bench, primarily working on flat bench for strength and using incline to help improve your flat bench

The best way to improve power on a bicycle is to LIFT WEIGHTS! Heavy squats or leg presses, lunges, calf raises etc. I do it once a week and I’m far stronger on the bicycle than times I have not lifted weights with my legs.

Thanks for the upload. The deadlift also requires core stability so: take a deep breath & hold it in whilst you zip-up the transverse abdominis & pressurize the abdominal cavity but focus on the transverse abdominis area (imagine a belt pressing around your waist & you push back against it do not stick your stomach out too far maybe 5mm max otherwise you lose structural integrity) ; engage the latissimus dorsi, arm straight through triceps extension, only after you have performed one rep do you exhale then inhale as you reset & repeat ;::))

I had to say something. I start lifting because i was really skinny and weak when i was young. SO i choose a path to developp my strenght. and only my strenght. And as Jeff is telling in this video, i had some cracks in my fundation. Till the point i figure i was weak in many domains..
SO i am not sending some cheap flowers to Jeff and his team… but all this videos and advices really change my way of training, of eating…and living.

Nuckle pushups are done on the nuckles of index and middle finger as they are bigger and stronger.

Weights are good, but the best way to improve threshold and overall power on the bike is plyometrics. If you want to build strength on the bike with weights do lunges then 2-4 minute intervals on the bike over-gear or high cadence, depending on goals, then back to lunges, repeat that 3-4 times through. You will need a big warmup obviously beforehand.

I started cycling 1st August this year. I haven’t done an FTP test as I can’t afford the equipment, I’m 17. Strava says I average about 110-130w per ride which is like 45km in 1h 30. I aim to start competing when I’m not a junior which is in 2020:)

I have actually the same training biking and doing squat and sort of lower part of body workout.. first u can’t see the results and so on with constant and proper training and supplements..it gains alot and special my sprinting absolutely increase…so on.

Why is it that everybody says that training makes your veins pop? I can do 30 reps pull-up in One set hundreds of push-ups, curls, triceps push down But no veins in my arms??…

I’d highly recommend reverse lunges i.e.. lunging backwards, as it takes away the shearing force of the kneecap on the front of the tibia and femur. Do it in front of a mirror too so you can watch that the knees are in line with the foot and the hips are stable!
I do everything you do on a downhill bike, if I had the bike you have I’d blow you out of the water, try riding 7 hours on a dh bike with 9 inches of rear travel an a dual crown boxxer in the front with 2.55 tires.

You need to use full size diameter plates on deadlift. They come in a variety of different weights but the important thing is even at a lighter weight the bar is at the correct height for deadlifting. Any lower and most people will have to break proper form to do the movement.

Better to perform the deadlift with a trap bar if you aren’t into power lifting. Reduces/eliminates spine injuries, and gives nearly all the benefits of a barbell deadlift.

Weight lifting does nothing to make you faster on the bike. This year’s TdF winner Egan Bernal is a wimp in the weight room but he can kick everybody’s ass on the bike. Genetics determines success in cycling. Big lungs, big heart, and lots of slow twitch muscle fiber makes a strong cyclist. Choose your parents well.

many yoga postures are very handy for post-ride stretch, try pigeon pose, for glute stretch & downward dog for legs

Aren’t 12 reps mean hypertophy? Shouldn’t a cyclist aim for 3-6 rep for maximal strength, small hypertrophy?

Winner of a video, been searching for “electrolytes imbalance and muscle cramps” for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about Reenrianna Imbalances Redemption (search on google )? Ive heard some super things about it and my neighbour got great results with it.
Low bar, barbell squats at bodyweight + are one of the best exercises you can do. It works all the core, hamstrings, quads. (Bar weighs 20kg, build up to adding bodyweight with something like strong lifts plan) Starting Strength is a great book on compound lifts with 50+ pages on squat alone!

Summary:
1) Chest: if your weakness is in your wrists you can do knuckle pushups 1:25.To work more on grip strength & finger strength perform fingertip pushups 1:50
2) Back: as you get to the last pullup you can do, instead of dropping off the bar do a dead arm hang.
3) Biceps: reverse curl 3:20 to work brachioradialis
4) Conditioning: jump rope for forearm work
5) Abs: Cliffhanger plank 4:30 which works hand strength and finger flexors. To work on weak wrists do seated tuck hold 4:55.
6) Triceps: Wrist curl at end of triceps push down 5:45 & 6:05
7) Shoulders: slightly extend wrists thumbs higher than pinkies like 7:00 to build forearms
8) Legs: Deadlift without straps

Planks are good and lifting up one leg can work core muscles. But might I suggest you try doing planks with your arms together (still at 90 degrees on the elbows) with your arms positioned together ( like aerobars) you have to balance, so you are working your core muscles harder to stabilise your upper body.

Lift heavy weights for legs 1 day a week!!! I do 12 sets a week consisting of leg presses, lunges and calf raises. You won’t believe the difference in the power in your legs!

None of this will increase your power on the bike. Power in gym is built on load moved fast not slow and controlled exercises.

1. This is far from having back straight.
2. You don’t need moving with hands while doing lunges or squats at all.
3. I don’t think you really need these. a) I mean squats are useless, you already have bicycle. b) more usefull than plank would be some back exercises c) if you do MTB much more useful would be stretching, so you don’t brake a bone everytime you fall.
Kinda counterproductive to lift in hypertrophy rep-ranges like 12 reps when the goal is not to put on a lot of size, but strength.

Dear skinnies, i advise you to pushup while carrying ur schoolbag with how much heavy you want it to be. And also sleep early because sleeping late or don’t have much sleeping will shrink ur muscles smaller! Don’t pushup alot or your shoulder might be damage. I experienced these few years ago and now i’m muscular. Before doing your exercise building, make sure to eat some calcium healthy foods and drink some water!
When are you making these into a workout video like the indoor trainer ones?
Go for a ride until you are beat. Then do Squats, to the point of failure. Then eat 2 to 3 grams of protein for every kilo of bodyweight to recover. Repeat once healed up in a few days. It works. The gym where I am has a squat press machine. I got the membership for this machine specifically. I also use the calf machine. My times have improved exponentially.
I don’t get why people don’t do weighted abs? They are the same as any other muscle, have the same potential to grow, I always have done weighted abs.
Does it matter if it’s flat or incline on the chest I’d prefer to stick with one.
Also how do I split it over 5 days?

Would love to add a short strength session, but it’s very tricky to add it on when I am training for an event as my days are usually always busy with either biking or running. Any suggestions??

I do a Push, Pull, Leg split with body weight Mon, Wed, Fri. I get my core lifts in, burnout with negatives, then work on my mind-muscle connection and do corrective exercises with bands. I never miss these days, and just use a weighted vest, some trx style rings, and bands so I can get the workout in anywhere I travel.
If I’m feeling it on off days, I’ll hit the gym and focus on compound barbell/dumbbell lifts for power and burn out aesthetic muscles afterwards. I’ll do whatever muscle group has at least a two day rest period. Then I wrap those workouts up with hiit training once or twice per week.
Absolutely. Everyone wants the next best workout. They really need the basics!
I think if you showed up at your local gym wearing full cycling TIGHT spandex, and started doing squats, you might get picked out or arrested.

It’s pretty clear from the video that this person is not experienced in the exercises he is performing. My suggestion would be to throw get rid of all the superfluous exercises and put all the energy into progressing with the dead lift. ( Do it barefoot or in socks. And use a real adult male/female bar. What was shown in the video is not a standard bar. ) Bulgarian split squat is a contender, but the movement is very similar to the strengthening that cycling will give you anyway. It would be good for correcting weak knee stability. But a single leg leg press would do just as well.

Diet Plan known as Custokebon Secrets kept appearing here on many videos and I thought they were scams. However after my mate follow it, and finally lost plenty of weight with it without starving herself. I’m persuaded. Don’t take my word for it, search for Custokebon Secrets on google.
What if my chest is weak? Can I sub in push-ups for bench until I can slam out a couple dozen?
I don’t like this because you only talk and don’t show the exercise.
It helps more to lose clippy pedals. My optimal weight is 235 pounds. Lower you seat about 31/2 inches. Go with a high gear. Stay seated, you’ll see why when pick up speed. Make sure your feet stay pointed foward. Stand when going up hill. You will notice tdf strong final sprinters dont sprint the same. At speed, they use a different muscle group which is how you can get a much shorter recovery time. On a fixie mine is about a quarter mile. Dont forget to breath expanding your chest cavity. Dont supplement because your ligaments will need time to adjust to the muscle growth. One of the gcn guys past me on the canal trail in CT USA a while going opposite directions. Sup.

Yes, I too am guilty of jumping through diet plan to others as well, I think that I must have tried every single weight loss program that was available, however in the end not one of them made it easier for me to lose and maintain the weight off. I ended up trying for the very last time with the Custokebon Secrets simply because my cooworker who told me amazing things about it and so far to date I have effectively dropped 19 lbs in 3 weeks!

My left hand is extremely weak since I fractured it almost 7 years ago. It is actually smaller than my right and also when I try to do some form of exercise I feel an imbalance of sort for e.g. I can do about 10 right-handed pullups by itself, but tire out around 8 when attempting to do with both hands (sometimes can reach 10 sometimes can’t); and of course I can’t do single left-handed pull-ups at all:(

There are now straps in real life. If you can’t hold the weight for whatever exercise, the weight is too much for you. This is nature’s way of preventing your dumb ass form hurting yourself.
I usually go to the gym on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday I have a routine of 20 press-ups then 35 sit-ups then 60 leg kick sit things then 20 press-ups then 25 leg move up things then 20 side press-ups then 30 seconds side plank on each side then 50 bicep curls then I hold a Weight in-front of me with my shoulders relaxedness arms straight for about 30-40 seconds then I do 36 of the ones with the weights by the side of my head and pushing them up individually then (finally) 20 360 degree leg turn things usually on the side of a stable table
I’m new to cycling.. currently I’m doing 70km a week in 2-3 rides and weights twice a week. Is that overdoing it or am i on the right track?? I’m making gains already but I’m pretty tired during the week.
in my opinion the easiest and fastest way to get stronger is to eat… and don’t stop eating. Get fat af and lift a few weights.

As a physio who is also dabbling in cycling, your gluteal stretch should be held for 30 seconds. Research has shown that anything less just causes the musculotendinous junction to just return to its normal resting length. Conversely, it also takes about 6 weeks to notice an appreciable change in flexibility. Keep up the good videos and Dan, work on some balance with those lunges.

I got up and went back down to the kitchen to lock up and get my gear, then I went to the bathroom. I decided to watch the television in my room, or listen to the radio, and get to sleep early so I could be up just after dawn to catch a wasp for the Factory.

So if I were to do a routine made up for The Plank, Alternate Arms and Legs Raises, and Glute stretch three times a week… how would it look like? 1 min each? 5 min each?I’ve started cycling last year and I have a very weak core actually, even if I do 100km+ rides I can feel my arms and shoulders suffering because I support my weight way too much through them.
Have you made a video covering muscle imbalances before? I have recently started riding track over the winter, and have noticed that I am right leg dominant. I have been trying to focus on engaging my left leg more as I ride, however i wondered if you had any suggestions on gym work etc that would help sort imbalances out? Cheers

Hey guys! As cyclists tend to already have a round back (shoulders are rotated in/forward) you should try to keep your shoulder blades closed when performing a plank. That makes it harder to sustain a neutral lower back but also helps with improving your posture. Generally, a plank might won’t be the best exercise for people who already have issues with their posture in the way of facing forward shoulders.

I would like to request that you do a video that could address how a person can approach making their body stronger when they are not strong enough to do compound exercises. I’m specifically speaking on this coming from my inability to do pull-ups or push-ups. I find it incredibly difficult, because the muscles involved in those exercises that play a big part in doing the exercises (such as the lats for the back, and the chest for the push-up) aren’t strong enough for me to actually do the compound movement itself. I have seen plenty of helpful videos of you showing what exercises are good at developing your lats and chest muscles, and I will be referring to those videos through my journey of getting those specific areas stronger, but what I’m really getting at here, is how does a person orchestrate their workout in a way to address these issues, without the workout solely being focused on isolation exercises? What is the proper balance of the kind of exercises needed (both compound and isolated) to make this effective? (Thanks for taking the time to read if you do!) -Kathy
