Step-by-Step Instructions. Sit up tall with your shoulders relaxed away from your ears and close your eyes. To prepare, become aware of your breath without trying to control Bring your awareness to your throat.
On your exhales, begin to tone the back of your throat (your glottis or soft palate. How to Perform Ujjayi Pranayama. Sit in any meditative pose like Padmasana (Lotus pose) with eye closed and try to keep your spine erect.
Take a long, deep breath slowly from both the nostril (inhale or breath in). While breath in trying to contract the throat and feel the touch of air in your.Ujjayi breathing is the most common form of breath control used in yoga. It’s a technique that focuses on breathing through your nose and tightening your throat to make a sound similar to a light.See if you can maintain the sound even with the lips are sealed.
Next inhale with mouth open and exhale with mouth closed, keeping sensation in your throat and the sound of breath the same. Do each for 5-10 cycles. When you feel you want to move on from here, relax your hand and begin Ujjayi Pranayama.Ujjayi Breathing Instructions.
Sit comfortably in any of the meditative poses. Sukhasana (easy pose) or padmasana (lotus pose) are preferred. Lengthen your spine and relax your Seal your lips and place both hands on the kneecap. Constrict the muscles of your back of the throat and Imagine a hole.Count each breath.
For example, inhale for a count of four, feel the natural pause at the top of the breath, then exhale for a count of four. To expand your breathwork, elongate the count of each inhale and exhale. Strive to create equal and consistent lengths. Experiment with breath retention.
Instructions. Begin seated in a comfortable position, such as Easy Pose ( Sukhasana ). Relax your body and gently close your eyes. Let your mouth drop open Inhale and exhale deeply through your mouth. Feel the air of your inhalations passing through your windpipe.
On your exhalations, slightly.Getting the Ujjayi Sound Right. If you’re having trouble getting the right sound for your breath, try this: With your mouth open, try exhaling the sound “HAAAAH”—it’s similar to the sound you make when you’re trying to fog up a mirror.
Get comfortable with this sound to get the hang of the practice. The Sequence of steps: Close the mouth and constrict the throat (the glottis — a part of larynx). Make a short exhalation and then start inhaling—slowly and rhythmically in one long and unbroken inspiration.
Allow the air to pass through the constricted throat, creating a “friction sound”.Ujjayi breathing is a breath technique employed in a variety of Taoist and Yoga practices. In relation to Yoga, it is sometimes called “the ocean breath”.
Unlike some other forms of pranayama.Breathe the air in and out slowly and rhythmically, finishing the Ujjayi breath. The breath is relaxed and never done using force or strain. We think of it as generous and nurturing. Why do we use Ujjayi (instead of another breath) Why don’t we just use a regular breath?
You can. But Ujjayi gives you a couple of extra benefits. The diaphragmatic breath of ujjayi is characterized by nostril breathing in which the length of the exhale matches the length of the breath in. Full inhales and full exhales flow smoothly, with no pause or breath retention between either.
A gentle constriction of the glottis creates an audible ocean-like sound as the breath moves past the throat.Ujjayi pranayama is a fundamental yogic breath that is incorporated into many different practices, from active yoga asana flows to seated meditations. In this post we’ll take a deep dive into how to do ujjayi breath for beginners and advanced practictioners alike. When done properly, Ujjayi (translated as “victorious”) breathing should be both energizing and relaxing.
In the Yoga Sutra, Patanjali suggests that the breath should be both dirga (long) and suksma (smooth). The sound of Ujjayi is created by gently constricting the opening of the throat to create some resistance to the passage of air. Gently pulling the breath in on inhalation and gently.Fill your lungs completely with fresh air and exhale completely. Start Ujjayi pranayama with 5 minutes of breathing and gradually increase the duration to 15 minutes.
Now link your breath to your movement. Practice Ujjayi pranayama while you do yoga postures.

To be frank I was somewhat confused..first you showed three kinds of breathing…then Ujjai…but Ujjai doesn’t seems to have any connection with the foretold mouthbreathing etc…is exhalation only through left nostril in Ujjai?.. your dressing (Shirt) is not apt for the situation..
Sir can you please suggest breathing exercises for hearty patients along with some simple asanas
I’m a new YTT student and my book tried to teach me to do this but I had no idea how to until you said “Darth Vader”! Love you! ❤️
Oh my goddd THIS IS SO WRONG… THIS IS NOT UJJAYI AT ALL.. BOGUS YOGA TEACHER
This is so helpful. I love it! Adriene you explain things in such a clear and easy-to-understand way. Thank you!
As expert, I do believe Saladulux Method is
great way to eliminated your snoring problem safely. Why don’t you give
it a chance? maybe it’ll work for you too.
Hi,thanks for the video but how come there is a different ujjayi as to inhaling with a sound and exhaling through one nostril with other closed. How different are these both..Which is more useful.Regards
all wrong palm should be facing up plz do proper research before preaching others
Nice. Thanks sir. One suggestion. Video must be little closer to you.
hey I love your channel and energy. thank you, i am a singer this helps me much
Hi, it was a very elaborate explanation of the pranayama with some useful tricks. I would be grateful if you could also mention the typical duration the pranayama needs to be practiced along with the maximum duration that one should not exceed.
I’m a subscriber, but this came up when I looked up how to spell “ujjayi” June 5, 2020, seven years to the day since it posted. Look at lil’ baby Adriene in her cute top and early 2010s eyeshadow! This made my day.
For those of us with chronically stuffy noses due to allergies, how do we do this breathing technique or yoga flow breathing in general? If fully breathing through the nose isn’t an option, are there other techniques to anchor into the breath? Thank you for your informative videos!
She talk about ujjayi but donno about prana
Kevala and alll that
Although it doesn’t seem like the complete ujjayi pranayam where you hold your breath after taking in with chin down and get it out of left nostril by closing the right one, this helped me learn how to properly take in the breath. Thanks.
is there a breathing technique that can be used on-the-fly to both 1) nullify anxiety and 2) stop hyper sweating?
for instance when in the subway en route to a very important job interview
Thank you Adrienne for giving insight on wonderful and basic Yoga breathing technique. It help alleviate stress, improves breathing cycles and give concentration. You are a wonderful coach and a trainer:)
Love the video Adriene! Would love for you or anyone reading this to Join me for a 21 days challenge for Kundalini Pranayama Practice to Cleanse Your Chakras! Namaste
This ha sound is sounding like the sound used in horror movies btw nice exercise i practice it everyday
That’s not ujjayi I think
Ujjayi is inhaling with tightening your glottis
Adriene you’re truly a blessing for millions of people who watch your videos and get benefits from them. Yoga has helped me heal and I learned doing it at home through your videos. Thankyou so much. May God bless u ❤
This is not Ujjaiyi pranayam. Ujjayi pranayam is the one where you inhale while making noise like the ghost lady from the movie Grudge. Sorry, I don’t know how else to explain it.
I have seen lot of videos for Ujjai but no one explained like this one. Thanks you made it quite easy:)
I was looking up hypnobirthing breaths and was having a hard time following the instructor on the “J” breath. One of the comments mentioned that the “J” breath is pretty much the Ujjayi breath, so I immediately came to your page to see if you had a tutorial, and lo and behold, you did! Thanks! It makes so much more sense with the way you taught it.
How do you make that sound when inhaling? 3:23? I can’t do that please make a video for that
Hi AJ,
Is the throat to be constrained only during exhalation or during inhalation also?
So clear and comprehensive. Thank you very much for assisting me in understanding this breath better
What if you feel dizzy? I’ve found the mouth breathing works better for me, but I’m seeing people mention that I must breathe through the nose? I felt a little dizzy after trying various breathing techniques.
Well this is not Ujjayi Breathing. This might be some other sort of breathing yoga, but definitely not Ujjayi.
It’s a fantastic video I just love yoga the yoga teacher name is AJ and my name Is Aarav jaiswal so that’s also AJ so I only do this only si AJ keep it up
Nice explanation but the bandhas should be practiced once a person is well-versed with 1:2 ratio(inhalation: exhalation).
Hi Adriene!!
TYSM for your awesome videos. so very helpful!!
I have a question on this one…when exhaling with mouth closed, are we exhaling still thru
the mouth or thru the nose?? Little confused…thank you so much for you help!!! xxx
Please be very clear & specific with your Instructions. It can misled a lot of people not knowing what exactly they are following. Ujjavi pranayama is one that needs to be instructed very clearly. Thanks!
Ujjayi breath is so relaxing and at same time I feel so concentrated, it’s just awesome Thank you:) Namaste
I can sorta do this (I think?) if I tuck the chin backwards to compress the throat a little but it can catch on the exhale, almost (but not quite) like a wannabe snore… is that the right direction?
I don’t understand, if my lips are closed am I exhaling through my nose?
Every time… I have only one beautiful thing for you… “love u”
Seems you are living in U S A, do not give false information like this and turmoil the india pride. If you want make money like this, first come to india learn yoga at rishikesh or other traditional organizations.
Incredibly grounding/peaceful and delightful. In gratitude.
I promise once you integrate these products you will fall asleep in under 5 minutes:
1. Blue lights blocking glasses http://amzn.to/2ifDMeY Wear these when you go to sleep or are working on the computer in the evening. These make it so that when it’s evening, your brain actually thinks it’s evening.
2. Taurine http://amzn.to/2hZcc5. Use 5g before bed. Besides being GABAergic Taurine has some other nice benefits: Increases Testosterone levels before sleep by 180% ( almost triples your T ) suppversity.blogspot.com/2012/07/up-to-180-increase-in-testosterone-w So not only are you going to fall asleep faster, you’ll be burning fat AND building muscle while asleep! Increases T4 to T3 conversion 2-fold http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/…/PMC3133948 again, higher T3=more fat burning. Increased thyroid activity ( Higher T4/T3 conversion ) is also often a marker for metabolic health.
3. Glycine http://amzn.to/2ijGc8z 5g before bed. Being a, again, a close GABA analog glycine also seems to be an antiinflammatory, immunomodulatory, and cytoprotective agent http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/…/12589194, as well as protecting against ischemic ( reduced blod flow ) injuries http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/…/22044190.
4. Niacinamide http://amzn.to/2ijDvUa in human doses of 1500mg 3000mg daily is potent anti-anxiety drug similar in action to the benzodiazepine class of drugs like Diazepam, Valium, and Xanax. Here are some scientific studies on that:

I can also personally confirm to the fact that anything above 1500mg dosing instantly can make me the mellowest, nicest…and sleepiest person.
Unite each one of these tools and there is certainly no way you are not going to fall asleep!
In short we have to inhale through nose and exhale through mouth with lips closed
Am I correct
thanks AJ. enjoyed it all and your instructions were very clear so was able to follow it. thankyou.
Does anybody else start yawning when they get into the deep breathing, or is that just me? I still come out really calm, it’s just slightly annoying to go into a yawning fit.
I do this breath when im wwight lifting and everyone thinks im about to hyperventilate and die lol
Very well explained… u was searching for this for a loooong time as I wasn’t able to attend any such classes… Thankyou
It doesnt explain how ujjayi helps specifically. perhaps the benefit is explained in the missing portion
I don’t know if I’m doing this wrong, cuz my throat feels really sore after i try this. Maybe the soreness will go away in time?
How sad that Hindi speaking people remove vowels at the end of beautiful Sanskrit words Aad Yog Asan. WTF. Aadi Yogi Asana etc are beautiful Sanskrit words. Why do you guys remove the vowels at the end? Is it because of Arabic/Urdu influence on the Hindi language?
this is very instructive video, thank you so much and lots of love from Turkey
Namaste,
This is called Bhramari pranayama.
Inhale like Male Bee, exhale like female Bee .(according to Hatha hoga pradhipika)
I was totally going to skip this! But I am so glad I did it. I got completely blissed out hearing the ocean in my throat.
You may have explained this better than anyone else I’ve seen. Not only that but the chanting of “So Hum’ really helped me to tune in to the breath while I was meditating. Thanks so much for sharing this with us and I will subscribe for sure!
Have you ever checked for tmj? I notice your jaw opens to the side when you exhale
I am not sure if there are multiple ways of Ujayi Breathing. Technically in Yoga, Ujayi is a breathing process where throat sound is must.
Thank you! I have practiced Ujjayi for years, but after you mentioned it on day 9 of Revolution (which i’m currently working my way through) I thought I’d check this out to ‘refresh’ and your clear instruction helped me to really ‘feel’ Ujjayi in a way I never have before I truly felt the relaxation and depth of this breath and also the ‘wave-like’ sound/sensation I’ve heard referred to but never fully understood (AKA Darth Vadar 😉 )… thank you again as always! x
Thanks AJ. You are such a pleasant and great teacher. You make it sound so easy.
I have got the experience of real vedic Ujjayi pranayam a little different as shown in tjis video. The Ujjayi sound from throght should be generated while inhaling nor while exhaling.
How to do it with lips closed.. Should no air should out from mouth
I am unconsciously doing the 3rd part of exhalation during yoga poses exhale..is it ok
The best explanation! In fact, the only clear one I could find after a long search…Thank you!
When to do this guru?
Can we do this when we are leisure or specifically is there any time to do.
I’m very busy employ and can’t do in the early morning.
Can we do this at 12:30 PM in lunch break without eating.
Please make video to open the chest mine is rounded shoulders this is really difficult for belly breathing
Came here after the 28th day of 30 days of yoga to learn and have fun, and I did!
These latest videos are so quiet. I have ytube up to max and my computer up to max and it’s difficult to hear every word. Thanks!
Most of the time when I’m doing yoga and try to control my breathing I end up yawning a lot and prevents me from breathing through the nose. Any tips?
Started the calendar for this month only today, but hey, better later than never! But the thing is, I never knew you could “breathe” through your mouth while keeping it shut, this is crazy.:D And super calming.
I may be ignorant but I think you aren’t supposed to breath during a bandha, you have to inhale then do a bandha in kumbhaka or exhale then do the bandha in shunyaka. Correct me if wrong!
Crazy to think that I started my yoga journey watching YWA (still the only instructor I watch lol) and now 6 years later I can see both of our growth. 6 years!! Amen to spiritual evolution ♥️ thank you for changing my life, Adrienne!
Sir when I practice ujjayi I tend to cough more, am I doing it wrongly, or will cough fade after few days of practice, please guide me
Are we not supposed to use this at night if it’s energizing or?
hey…nice video. just to add Breath of Fire is Bastrika pranayam not Ujjayi one. regards.
Geneally while we inhale in deep breath tummy goes out and goes in while we exhale. You have explained here to do reverse. Means tummy in while inhale and out in exhale. Does it reverse for this Ujjayi pranayam only??
Your videos are nice but if it would be small than it will be icing on the cake
So exhale through right nostril, do I then in next round exhale throught left nostril? Thank you!
This is the best explanation and method i found for Ujjayi Breathing. Thank you.
i just want to say thank you i meditate even for 8 hours but still had some problems,i started to do the different type of pranayama you posted since only 3 days for no more than 2 3 hours everyday and my life changed dramatically,i still can’t believe it, this feel like a miracle,i’m with no words at this point,i knew that i just had to keep going with the flow,it paid off big time but is not always easy, thank you again
you are awesome. pls make some more videos on other techniques
thank u for sharing your knowledge with us… Sir can you please make video for sequence of Pranayam which can be done everyday…
There is another variation of ujjay, also called breath of fire, without kumbhak with fast breathing in stomach. THESE are sorts of pranayama or just variations od UJJAY?
Awwww! I’ve been following these videos for about few months and I finally decided to watch this one. It’s so old! I don’t know why I feel nostalgic about something I’ve only known about for 3 months, but I do.
One of my favorite breaths!!! I did one too!!

Hii mam I’m yoga trainer coach in india.. I’m teaching yoga to people for free in my city. Pls tell me your yoga insta I’d. Send me pls

Thank you for clear information and your voice is soothing nice and very much clear thank you
When I try and do the sound when inhaling, my lowwr body starts to tremble, really weird.
Very well explained. Really enjoyed doing it and felt very light after. Calmness you feel after breathing exercises and yoga is beyond words.
Good morning Sir,
please could you tell if during the neck lock I should be in apnea or not? Thank you so much
Namasté
Today i understood ujjai breathing well due to your simple show of how to do it. thanks. keep it up.
wait, so you inhale first and then make a sound? Did I get it right? You are not inhaling while you are making the sound?
When we close our mouths is the breath supposed to come out of our nose or do we force it through a small gap in our lips?
Thanks for helping me keep my lungs healthy during this hard time!:)
I got a goosebumps from top to toe everytime i inhale, is that normal sir?
Thank you for your video!
I have hyperthyroid disbalance. The doctor advised me to do Ujjayi pranayama (and Sighasan) but he didn’t tell how many times and when exactly (he said just in the morning). So could you please tell me:
1) If I do this in the morning, should I do it before having breakfast or it’s okay to do it after?
2) If only before the breakfast, can I drink some warm water before?
3) How many times in a row I should do it?
4) And by the way, do you have a video on Sighasan?
Well done instruction Adrienne ❤️ thank you. this relaxed me so much and cleared my sinus. For the past nine months I’ve been anxious and indecisive. Now all that stuff seems sorta silly nice to feel calm again. Love what ya do.
Mam u teaches deeply…nice video…but i hv a issue that my back ache starts during sitting for pranayam so i can’t concentrate…plz guide me to remove this difficulty

This might be a silly question but when the mouth is closed…I’m presuming both in and out breath is throught the nose? And the ‘fogging up mirror’ is just a technique to get used to the feeling in the throat?
Am I doing it wrong? When I breathe in, I sounded like a dying dinosaur. Is my throat too constricted in this method?
Thank you…
So it’s always exhale through the left nostril?..
The right is not involved in the exhaling process…?
Thank you Sir. Very clear instructions and it detail. No confusion at all. And no long winded explainations. Thank you.
Can you please give me your number. Need to ask some more yoga exercise
Sir very informative video. But I request u. Plz make this vedio with Urdu translate. Saaf Urdu me translate Karen. Take k him jesy log horizon bht achi English nahi samghty woh Bhai faida utha saky but us urdu me Hindi Bhutan jam boli jae q k hindi Bhi sang nahi ati

Thank you very much for your guidance!!:) This is so helpful!
Coming back for a breathing refresher after yoga Kiss day 4! Thank you for all this amazing instruction, Adriene!
i find that my inhale is not as long as my exhale, will practicing increase my inhalation capacity?
Thank you so much for teaching the pre ujjai preparation. I have hypothyroidism always in control for past 10 years. My doctor has recommended to perform Ujjai. However I’m unable to make that sound she made and you made while breathing in. It would be great if you gave the position of the throat. Much much thanks again!
Hi Adriene, thanks for the video. I use advanced Ujjayi Pranayama to cure snoring problem. Unfortunately I can’t find any videos in English to share it with my friends who speak English and not Nepali or Hindi. Do you have a video on that or may be make one?
Underneath you’re what? How do u place the tongue the right way? not sure what you said
Any other singers out there want to address the mechanics of what’s going on? Worried about over-doing it and creating vocal tension. Clean inhales and closing my mouth while exhaling seems to be working best for me right now. Thanks all, and thanks Adriene. ❤️♀️✨
Nice video however 1 major and most important part is the breathe should be exhaled only and only through left nostril by closing right nostril with thumb.
Previously when using Ujjayi breath, I would feel discomfort (almost pain) in my throat. Thank you for this video. It helped to know that I don’t have to be loud and also helped to practice with opening my mouth for the first half of the exhale. Namasté Adriene! <3
Well…Im Confused even after watching full video….
Im suffering from thyroid, so i heard that its the best Pranayam for curing thyroid……
1)Should we make sound while we are taking breath in??
2) Should we take breath via Nose /throat/mouth??
3) While we breathing out that Ocean sound should be from throat??
4) How long we should hold the breath inside??
Can you answer me pls….
Liked the benefit of Yoga and I have been following her tips, particularly on Lungs.
Thank you sir, for explaining it in detail and step by step. Pranam

My breath isn’t really that audible. My breath seems to just be very quite. Is that okay?
Thank you for the good content and simple but detailed explanation. Should the inhale and exhale be equal in this pranayama?
I just watched StarWars yesterday! So I know exactly what it has to sound like Great practice, thank you. Namaste
Sir I feel like some problem in my throat like something is in breaked my throat so plse suggest me what I do and not I do
I’m taking a class on communicating with confidence. The instructor suggested using Ujjayi to focus when anxiety hits. After going along with this video. I see how useful it can be to focus the mind.

I am sorry but a am from Greece. What’s the difference of time? What time should this happen? I am i would appreciate it if you informed me. Also i generally have issues with the diaphragm and lungs. Does this exercise help as well for this issues?
hello sir. I have been practicing ujjayi for a year now. But I amnt sure wether or not I am doing it correct. I feel i am not inhaling while I make the sound from my throat. I have practiced your techniques too. I can involve the vocal cavity but I think I am not able to inhale simultaneously. I first inhale then make the sound and then exhale. I always feel breathless that’s why
In ujjai we are not taking breath in Hale & exhale by nose, only by mouth, mam please explain
you made it so easy. wonderful video. Very clear, to the point and no show off.
First time I understood about ujjayi pranayam.
My pranams to you.
That was super clear explanation! Appreciate the insight! ❤️
Resp. Madam,
You have explained and demonstrated the Ujjayi pranayama so nicely. It is very clearly understood. Thank you ji.
I am having hyperthyroidism shall I do this yoga sir. Kindly reply me
Have done this on day 2, along with Deepen and Flow. A helpful way to start the day. Thank you Adriene xx
My ear popped. I have trapped mucus. I think this will help. Unclog my post nasal drip. This and the mucus free eating. Stay tuned for results! ❤
About the sau and hum sounds other literature asks for sau in exhale and hum in exhale. What’s the right way?
Thanku for posting this Video. I saw so many videos of Ujjai Pranayam but yours helped me in understanding the method so clearly.
Not sure if I’m doing the breathe right, I sound like my nanna when she snores
I’m sure it will come in time, with practice
Will have to work a little harder on this chest breathing exercise as I’m so use to breathing from my stomach, but it’s all a part of the of the breathing development technique. Thanks again for your teachings!
Really enjoy your practises.I am currently learning to become a yoga teacher.Thank you Adrienne
You are the best!!! Thank you so much…this is the best video for ujjai. I have seen atleast 20 videos all of them showed rigourous inhaling making loud snoring sounds in the neck, but this is correct
Ujjayi Pranayama is the victorious breath not the breath of fire which is practiced in Kundalini yoga
Extremely helpful! I read about it in a book but I had to see others doing it to understand it. But you explained it way better than my book did.
Keep being awesome! ☺️
Sir can you please let me know which pranayam is suitable for treating liver infection and fatty liver alongwith the list of prayanams we should avoid doing during liver problems
Oooo so decent manner, so decent outfits, iitttuuuu sa bhi show off ni nahi……..Clam soul
This is the only breathing technique that give me immediate result.
I felt light headed and goosebumps from top to toe in a single inhalation
AJ you’re the best yoga teacher I ever had. So easy to follow your instructions. I hope you’re still making these videos
34 year old dad from from Australia. You have introduced me to yoga ♂️ and changed my life forever. Thankyou Adriene. I will be teaching my daughters as hey grown that the benefits of yoga can be carried with you for a lifetime.
Thanku so much for sharing now will do it the right way thanks for sharing keep on posting sir
Inhaling, tongue under upper teeth. What about exhaling? Should be done in the same way ( mouth and throat) or through the nose?
Thank you for this visual demonstration to the text I read on the Ujjayi Pranayama. I have asthma and this will definitely help me strengthen my lungs and enhance my yoga practice.
Usually I don’t face any difficulty in doing kapalbhati but it’s been three days, whenever I do the initial three steps of ujjaye pranayama and singh asana, I feel nauseated.. why does it happen and how do I get rid of nausea?
How much time should one needs to hold breathe before exhaling through Chandra nadi?
It was very well thought out and delicately presented for a listener to align easily. I had been doing such practices for many years, but your videos make it very practicable. All the very best!
Good morning my friend! It’s only been a day, but it feels like I haven’t seen you in such a long time How are you today? How are things?
When I was practicing this today with you, I started hearing an ocean sound coming from my window. I keep it cracked open, and when there is a strong breeze, it will create that whistling effect. When I woke up today, there was zero wind. At the end of this practice, the wind outside and my breathe inside were both ocean-ing. It reminded me of one of the practices that you did when a bird sang afterwards. Love to you my friend Namaste.
