Banded face pulls Hang or anchor the band to a fixed attachment point. Grab each side of the band with your hands. Palms will be facing in. Squeeze your shoulder blades together and slowly pull the band toward your shoulders. Pause for a few seconds and return to the starting position.
Hold the rope with an overhand (externally rotated) grip, with your thumbs up. Take a few steps back from the tower to extend the cable. Keep a strong athletic stance, activating your core and.

Then, bend at the elbow to pull the weight toward your face. Remember not to let your elbows drop. Stop pulling when the rope is near your forehead to get more of an external rotation.
Face Pulls vs Band Pull Aparts vs Rear Delt Flys The band pull apart and rear delt flys are other great exercises to train the same muscle groups as the face pull. In my opinion and experience, that doesn’t do as great a job to isolate the muscles of the upper back, especially the rear deltoids.

This guy certainly doesn’t know how to do face pulls, this is completely wrong way of doing face pulls, the way he shows it in this video will definitely injure someone’s rotator cuff. I am unable to understand why this guy has so many subscribers and views, he doesn’t even know how to do this movement properly. Hope he reads this comment.

I 100% agree. I particularly remember to do them on any day I work chest or shoulders. I used to get a lot of pain in my front delt every time I did a heavy bench press or shoulder press. I started doing face pulls every time I was ding a push day, that pain is now gone. They are beyond important. Thanks Jeff.

Actually you shouldn’t be lifting your elbows high like that when performing this exercise. Keep your elbows nice and low and close to your body

I’m a fan of Scott Herman. However this video is teaching a dangerous technique. He is teaching the face pull in a way that causes INTERNAL rotation of the shoulder, and will over time cause nasty shoulder impingement problems. (He coaches to keep elbows higher than hands, overhand grip on rope.) Everyone else teaches this movement in a way that focuses on EXTERNAL rotation, that protects and strengthens the rotator cuff (hand higher than elbows, underhand grip on rope). Who is right? Athlean x and colossus fitness all do face pulls differently.
This is not a face pull, it’s somewhat of a vertical row (which is bad for your shoulders anyway)

The face pull is ok, but the trap raise is hard as hell for me. Had to drop 50% of the weight used for face pulls and it is still hard.

One day of doing these two exercises with a resistance band in the park plus your neck extension exercise with the 5lb weight and a tennis ball.. feel amazing. Going to get your elastix band for my shoulders to fix my posture. Worked out for years but neglected posture which is why i always felt like shit. Thank you bro

My old gym didn’t have the ropes for doing face pulls. Just moved to a new gym. First attempt at a face pull I literally hit myself in the FACE with the rope, look around to see if anyone saw, then laugh my ass off. Now I gotta see if the attempts I did afterwards were the right form lol

Thank you Jeff and Jesse! I have been struggling with shoulder issues for a long time and now I really know why! I’ve been doing every rotator exercise BUT the facepull. I’ve just added them in the last couple DAYS and along with some other dynamic shouldr stretching I’ve seen you and others demonstrate, I already feel my shoulders are finally beginning to increase in flexibility and I can see how in the near future this will transfer to gains in my overhead and bench pressing abilities!! Can the elbows stay IN during the move? Not to excess, just not winging out. It’s harder to do, but also helps to integrate the shoulder blades, at least for me. Hands win the race, elbows in?

This is a great way to hurt your rotator cuff, you never want your elbows higher than your wrists here. I work in physical therapy and I see people hurt themselves like this very often.

Can confirm that doorway thing works. Dunno about my rotator cuffs but I definitely felt it in my upper back and rear dealts. Not quite as easy as it looks, depending on how far out your feet are away from you.

Should be an under grip, not over grip…..then pull to face, not neck.
This is more than medium traps work than a rear delt excerise, it’s another way to do “facepulls” but not the real one.

I’ve been doing external and internal shoulder rotations for my rotator before my workouts. Just 10lbs and 1 set of 20 reps. All of my shoulder pains have gone away sense then. I’m going to add this to the end to improve on that.

This is NOT a Face Pull.
1. It’s called Face Pull for a reason You pull towards your face.
2. Main objective of this exercise is to strengthen your rotator cuff by externally rotating. You’re not doing that either.

More like an upright row. External rotation is the key component. Face pulls are done to strengthen the supra and infraspinatus, the rhomboids as well as the rear part of deltoid and the mid part of traps. You’re going to tear your supraspinatus tendon if you keep fraying it by doing it like this.

i learned that instictively.i had pain in the back if the shoulder and it hurt when i was pressing overhead.i thought maybe my front delta overpower my rear which i never train.i did 3 sets of these and felt a relief
I follow mostly all forms from your videos, but this is certainly not the right way to do it, it is not natural to pull in this manner, for 3 weeks i have done your way and then realized it the wrong way.

The higher i have the rope the better it feels on my shoulder. For me anyway. I tried from upper chest today and it was uncomfortable. Im pretty tall idk if that makes a difference

I’m confused now, didn’t he say that bending down for your face pulls give a lesser external rotation to your shoulder but in this video he asked us to bend down for the towel exercise how will this be beneficial then?

Doing face pulls with the humerus at thatlevel internally rotated impinginges the supraspinatus tendon and the bursa under the acromion, which with time will cause problems.
A better and safer exercise for the posterior deltoid are reverse flyes with the humerus at a neutral position (top of hand pointing backward).
If I have resistance bands at home, would you recommend doing this with resistance bands?

This is not an idolation exercise….arms mai bhi flexion ho ra hai…double joint movement…..elbows and shoulder….so compound movement…Faltu bakne se phle brush up your knowledge
he is doing it incorrectly, I’m sure he is hitting the rear delt nice, but he is doing it supinated which leads to internal rotation.

This is an upright row with a rope. Horrible exercise. Gonna cause impingement
Doing this I fixed the constant neck pain I had from locked up upper traps but my right shoulder clicks during a lot of shoulder movements unless I’m very conscious and play around with the angles I move up or backwards at. Any suggestions? Face pulls and lat raises are the worst for it

There is a detail missing, like others have noted. You are doing a rear deltoid row, with some shitty internal rotation. Not a facepull.
Watch athlean x video on facepulls. The hands need to lead the motion, as in the hands need to be quicker than the elbows.
Imagine your hands in the U position, but with puffing your chest out and having your wrists as far back as possible. Like you are surrendering in a flamboyant over dramatic way.

You shouldn’t give advice without actually know how to do the exercise, hands need to beat elbows back. Your compromising everyone’s internal rotator cuff
