To use this “calories burned exercising” calculator, you’ll need to pick your activity, enter how long you performed it for, and enter your weight. I don’t think the average lifter is going to burn anywhere near 300 calories in a session. You MIGHT burn that much if you’re competing in lifting and your super intense session lasts 2 hours, but not for the 1 hour regular lifting session that 99% of us do. I’d say 150 cals burned would be the normal person’s absolute hardest day in the gym (a session you may do once a month), but on average we all probably burn around 70 cals

I lift weights moderately and walk 4 miles a day at leady and I notice I lose more weight WALKING. I also don’t get hungry after walking.

i used a website to calculate my bmr. It was 2,000 calories. Does that mean that i burn 2000 calories on top of the chloe ting challenge every day?

you might not burn calories during the session, but you put your body through a muscle recovery state that raises your calorie need intake in other words your metabolism, and the higher your muscle mass is, the more calories your burn at a sedentary state… while cardio just burns calories during the session but does not raises your metabolism that much… am i wrong?
That makes sense. Scientific methodology. Use the tread mill as a reference tool. Chart the intensity of each work out and compare notes. When the gyms open I’ll do a video using this method a give you a shout out.
I actually didn’t do the challenge to lose weight but to gain muscle definition and become a bit fitter in general. I think burning calories should not be your top priority when doing an ab workout challenge
Am i the only one overate weight lifting in term of burning calories while 1 hr inclined walking on treadmill would be more effective?

When I went from a 4 day routine to a 5 day with weights volume replacing cardio volume, I had to increase my daily Calories by roughly 200/day in the 2nd week to maintain weight (+1400 Cal per week). I think this topic needs further looking into before conclusions are made.

I finished the 2 weeks challenge yesterday and my weight is still the same..and I can’t see much difference in my body. I lost an inch off of my hip but I still look like as ugly as when I started..I was really depressed by the results..I eat clean too..
I was 185 Pd with %6 body fat when I lifted and did long cardio. Because of my busy life, I stopped cardio but continued lifting, I gained 50 pd with 20% body fat in 10 years.. I changed from being ripped and mucsular body to fat and miserable.
I started doing 60 minute cardio 5 times a week 5 months ago and continue lifting, I dropped 30 pd and back to 12% fat. I still have 20 pd to go, but I am much happier now. Don’t skip your cardio session.
The “observation” bias you are talking about has no effect on what the study questions. Cardio vs resistance tranings. If both groups had masks and been in the same set up. Then when you compare these 2 groups the bias cancels out. The diference between cardio and resistance trainings remains.
My suunto 9 watch often claims I burned 700 calories in a 2hour session with an average heart rate of 120ish
I started doing a “clean bulk” diet and within a month people have told me I looked slimmer/lost weight. I’m a 25 yr old male and my goal was to add about 10lbs to my overall weight in muscle, to get my size bigger (ie arms, legs, abs) and to be much stronger than I was. All I consume is quality protein from whey/casein, chicken, turkey along with nothing but complex carbs and healthy fats from avocados, avocado oil, and other oils.
Am I on the right track to gain muscle over the course of the next 3-6 months?

I love your content. Ok so I just had a push workout and moved 27,000 lbs in 36 minutes and had an average heart rate of 134. According to assumptions in the study I burned like 100 calories? The premise violates the 2nd law of thermodynamics. I think I need to review the study. I guess it really depends on how you workout. If you are an ego lifting teenager sitting on a bench doing a set every 5 minutes and surfing on your phone sure. If you run around the gym on a misson leaving a puddle of sweat (and cleaning it up afterwards ) it’s a totally different case. What about using heartrate as a guide?

The numbers you gave arw pretty much the same as the resting metabolic rate. Those must have been some weak workouts.

Ok I’m just saying the Chloe Ting workouts aren’t the only thing that has helped me be fit and feel good, it’s the only workout program that has actually worked and I feel motivated everyday to do these workouts, I am happy with how the Chloe Ting workouts have made me feel skinny, healthy, and better

it’s not all about burning calories tho. Chloe’s workouts are supposed to introduce people to their fitness journey and help them get toned… without her vids i would just be lying in bed doing nothing.
I wear a chest strap Hr monitor synced to my phone app to monitor Hr and calorie burn, I know it’s not the most accurate tracker but it’s better than others for sure and the amount of calories burned during the lifting portion is minimal unless you’re lifting heavier weight overhead or something but great video!!!

So should we use HRMs then? Are they even accurate? I use one with a chest strap and I burn more when strength training than with cardio (unless it’s an elliptical).
May be not immediately, bit if burning calories is the goal then putting on more muscle makes you burn more calories generally, while not in the gym, wouldn’t you say?
Great video. I do about 40 sets per workout and takes about 2 hours. I’d say i burn around 400
I don’t really work out to burn calories either; I see the calorie burn as a positive side effect. I work out because it controls my hunger levels and distracts me from food for a couple of hours. Really makes getting through those low calorie days a lot easier. Plus it makes me feel good. All those small things help me to stay motivated.
Some of this isn’t adding up to me. Your say you believe your BMR is about 1300 (indeed a quick online calculator with your stats gives me 1360), but then you’re burning 120-200 calories on average for each of these workouts, and you’re showing your day at 1450. Another chart showed 1,446 or so. I watched twice and didn’t see or hear any mention of these calculations not being complete (as in you still had more activity to go in the say).
Basal metabolic rate doesn’t include the basic acts of getting up, walking to your shower/car/lunch/store, or the energy it takes to talk, eat, or sit upright. Over the course of a day, even an office worker can expect to burn about 200 kcal through basic motions. How are you arriving at 100-150kcal over your BMR with those activities AND your workout? I’m not accusing you of anything, your fitbit is clearly showing the workout, I’m just a bit confused.
Finally, a lot of people seem to be overly defensive about a workout that doesn’t burn a massive amount of calories… just for reference, an 150lb person needs to run nearly three miles to burn 200 calories. These HIIT workouts maximize burn; to get the same work done in 25-35 minutes indoors is NOT an insult to Chloe Ting. If it’s not enough for you, make like Lauren and add to it!

Well that’s depressing lol i use a polar chest strap and it says i burn 400-500 calories a session. Takes me about an hour and 10 minutes, total body style and all compound lifts (ex workout: BB Squats, Push Ups, Reverse Lunges, DB Row, Romanian Deadlifts, and BB Overhead Press) 3 sets of 8-10, 60 seconds rest. So my heart rate varies from 120-165 bpm the whole session. I do that 3 times a week. I got 25 pounds to lose so I’m hoping that’s good for now (i also walk 10k steps 5-6 times a week and do cardio 2 times a week, but will increase that if i plateau). Starting off with 1850 calories a day. 2 days rest. Hopefully that’s good enough:(
First of you said nothing about the rest between set (3 minutes or 30 sec)plus in Chis Asceto book (championship bodying page 213 paragraph 3 he said all most the oppsite of what you are saying.)

A lot of people are so quick to defend her jeezz I tried her entire Summer Shred challenge and didn’t see a lot of results, even with eating clean and some added cardio. Yes, they’re a good starting point, but Chloe Ting does not have a background in fitness and its simply true that there are so many more qualified fitness instructors who provide free videos with proper form and more effective exercises (try Sydney Cummings!). No ones saying that Chloe Ting workouts can’t be effective but literally compare her form for her moves to professionals and you’ll see the difference, trust me. Also, I know clickbait is really common on Youtube but I don’t think its right that she markets her programs as fat-burning, weight loss programs even though the majority of her vids are all abs and booty isolation again a good starting point for building strength but not as beneficial as they seem for fat burn (keep in mind, most of her vids have “Fat Burn”, “Lose Weight”, “Sexy”, “Slim” in the titles). And personally, after trying her workouts, I wouldn’t want this to be a starting point of a fitness journey for me since her form is really not great lol if you’re going to use her videos, practice form and do the moves slow.
Also, her diet and nutrition tips are not backed up by science and a lot of what she says is not great advice. All I’m saying is that people need to be able to handle the criticism of her videos she’s of course free to post whatever she wants, but I feel like with the way her channel is blowing up, she has a responsibility to be more diligent in providing accurate information especially a huge portion of her audience is young easily influenced teens.

That’s an average workout. I think working out with high intensity. Will burn more calories. Including supersets and increasing your heart rate you will burn more calories. So I don’t think this is as simple as to say you burn less calories doing weight training than cardio.

I also have a fitness watch (huwaei band 4 pro) and I burn a lot more calories during her exercises. For example every 3 videos I burn 300-500 total calories. My average heart beat is much higher than yours during the workouts. Someones fitness level, body mass and genetics definitely influences how many calories they can burn from a workout. How much you ate that day or how tired you are can also influence performance. So I’d say if anyone wants to know using a fitness watch themselves would be a better indication.
Im pretty sure this is not accurate as there is the ”afterburn” effect after HIIT type of exercises like burpees, sprints, juming jacks, pushups ect. Not to mention other benifits. But hey, walking is pretty ok too.

My fitbit claims I burned 732 calories in my workout yesterday, which was 80 minutes. My average heart rate was 128 bpm and I walked approximately 1.6 miles. I get that this figures aren’t 100% accurate but it’s got to be in the ball park. IMHO cardio is unnecessary unless it is cardiovascular conditioning you are after.

I always combine Running or statinary bike with her workouts, because its a known fact that strengthening excersies burn less calories than Cardio. Try doing both.

I lost more weight & bodyfat when I cut my cardio down & started heavy lifting. My body responds better to weight lifting since when I was homeless & without transportation my metabolism was shot though I walked everywhere I went.

I didn’t see too crazy results with the shred challenge but I’m doing her original hourglass challenge now and am seeing a big difference with it. I don’t know if it’s just because I have an hourglass shape so it works better for me but I also think the workouts for that are more intense

also you can’t forget that a lot of people doing this challenge are overweight, incl. me, which means we burn more calories than a normal, skinny person. im currently on day 2, curious to see the results i also hike every day for the last 2 months so i know my results will be probably a bit better than what i expect

You may swell just go to the gym, smash out 300-400 treadmill sessions until you are skinny enough to start clean bulking. Everything else seems like so much of a mix of things. You can’t build muscle on a caloric deficit. You may look horrible in a t shirt for a while, but I would much rather see the fat come off and then clean muscle being put on.
Okay….that was really good, Paul. I was shocked at how low the EPOC calorie burn was, VERY shocked. I’m going to check out the link. It was just further proof that for all intents and purposes, I know now that I’m not going to deadlift my way from 18% body fat down to 6%. And my limited volume of HIIT cardio workouts aren’t by themselves gonna get me there either. For me, I’m a bigger girl and get very tired during these workouts, I usually have to take longer breaks cause I cannot breathe, these workouts are generally for people who don’t workout so if you workout regularly they are not going to burn as much especially if your workout is more intense

I think people forget that workout is not only about burning calories, is about muscle growth, making your metabolism active, etc. Yes, her workouts are not as intense as going to the gym and burning hundreds of calories just to get so exhausted, you sleep the rest of the day, she does these routines that 1. Make you exercise 2. Allow you to not die and continue going through your day 3. Build strength. Lauren is just pointing out how much you burn DURING the exercise but you keep burning calories (more effectively) across the day if you exercise, soooo…….peace and love and dont kill me <3

I don’t wear my Apple Watch when doing Chloe’s programs because I’m never sure how to track the exercises, so I’m really glad someone else did this for me! 200-300 cal doesn’t sound like a lot, but that’s about how much I burn going on a 3 mile walk. I’m satisfied with that number, especially when I’m already counting my calories to make sure I don’t eat over my deficit. Thanks for making this video!

So are you recommending that someone overweight should do less weight training and more cardio as far as exercise goes?
200 calories is actually a large amount. if you ate your normal diet but burnt 200 calories of it everyday, it would take 17 days to lose one pound. that sounds like a lot but on a weight loss journey you are likely to also cut your calories a little bit which will definitely quicken that loss.
It would be a shame for you not to shed body fat while other normal people are able to shed pounds very easily with Custokebon Secrets (just google search it).
I burn on average 400 calories doing her 4 2 weeks shred workout videos back to back!
There is something off about this study you mention. I use a polar chest strap (heart rate monitor) every time i go to the gym (I’ve used it for over two years now) and on leg day and chest and back day I burn a little over a 1,000 calories (I train for about 2 hours on those days including 15 minutes of warmup, 4 sets of 6 to 7 exercises, 8-12 reps) and on shoulder day and arms day I burn a little over 600 calories ( usually train for about 1.5 hours, 4 sets of 6 to 7 exercises, 8-12 reps).
Doing an hour of plyometric training I burn about 1,000 calories (The P90X plyo workout) and I feel like dying! I used to do this over a year ago, no anymore, now I hate cardio.
Anyway, my point is that a lifting session will burn over 500 calories for sure.

This is very fair and thank u for making this video)) I think this proves a point that you cant just do excersize but it is about the diet as well to help reach that deficit needed to lose weight.

I lost 7 pounds in 3 months and that’s with biking for the first month with her workouts and then now just doing her workouts. I also lost a ton of belly fat as well and will continue to do her workouts, I feel great in my body so far
I did the two week shred two times and felt more toned and fit and my clothes felt better, but definitely noticed a bigger change in my body when I started to add small weights, 4lbs I think, when I could, and also doing her videos after doing strength workouts using 10lbs dumbbells
Good video! Could you please tell us your weight and heigth so we can calculate our own calorie expenditure?
I mean most hiit for 10 mins only burn around 100
So since hers is 20 mins including the abs it would make sense youd burn around 200. I honesty still find her workouts hard but I always do 4 workouts a day not just 2.
People are complaining her workouts are hard but also complaining its not burning enough?
If your not getting leaner who cares if your gadgets claim 1000kcal burn. There are plenty of superstrong fat guys in the gym that prove the point made in the study.
I have been doing chloe ting’s exercise since february and yes i do it 4 to 6 times a week.After a workout i will burn around 200 to 500 calories depending on which workout did.Her workouts made me drop from 70kg to 61 now slow progress but definitely works.Didn’t loss that much weight during the first month but my waist line and thighs sink
How would you compare Chloe Ting workouts to lifting in the gym, for the same amount of time in terms of calories burnt? If you ever measured those kinds of workouts
Okay so I’ve just started to work out recently, I’m trying to lose a bit of weight, but I’m a little lost here. Does that mean the workout is not worth it? If the answer is yes, what better workouts do you suggest to lose weight?
Someone in the comments said it’s not just about calories and if that’s right then what else is it about?

I lost 6 kg with her. Gained it all back after recovering from an ED and taking a break from exercise and crash diets (two years ago). Now I eat healthy (actually healthy, not extreme), exercise regularly and I went back to Chloe Ting. Her workouts are killers if you do them right and has definitely helped me feel more toned and confident. Once I get stronger I’ll have to add some weights and do some tougher workouts but she’s a great and free resource. I’m not trying to lose weight now but I’ve lost close to 2 kg after going back to working out (started again last summer) and doing some of her videos and I feel much stronger than before.
Remember to eat clean and healthy! Never starve yourself and focus on getting healthy and strong!
It’s still physical exercise. Even walking can help you loose weight. I personally think Chloe’s workouts are for us folks who cant spend more than 40 min in the gym. You are still getting the exercise and will loose weight as long as you eat cleaner
kind of sad because for me when i did her challenge i kind of got a little fatter and gained weight too:( i didn’t make any changes to my diet so i dont understand how i gained
What about post workout for a lifting session. Are you burning at a different rate for longer or is it mostly just directly during the lifting session.

You can also download a free app called MyFitnessPal. You can scan barcodes to log what you’ve eaten and it will tell you how many calories it is. Helping to keep track of them, and has more helpful features:)
I realized this after a year of (mis)tracking my strength workouts with Polar H10 chest strap. I used to feel great that I was burning 1000+ calories doing full body splits and then eat accordingly! There’s a difference between Volume load on the heart (when running for example) which burns calories and Pressure load on the heart (when doing something like heavy squats) which doesn’t burn as much. A heart rate monitor reads both types of load as having the same impact on calories burned which is wrong.
Now I just keep a fix calorie target of 2400 Kcals (1950 BMR + 450 for moving around and 5days/week 90mins workouts) and eat 2000-2200 for cutting and 2600 for bulking.
so i tried chloe tings workouts but tbh didnt helped me a lot but now im doing roberta’s gym workouts and tbh those ones r helping me so much more,im not saying that chloe tings workouts are not working,im saying that they r not working for my body
How many calories you burn during lifting is all about intensity (more load, less rest, compound vs. isolation, etc.). You can’t say cardio burns more calories than lifting without discussing intensity. If you perform a high-intensity lifting session and your heart rate stays high for 45-60 minutes, you’ll be burning a lot of calories. Same as if you performed cardio and kept your heart rate elevated for the same amount of time.

Hi, your example for the 40 year old female, weighing 150 lbs, working out for 60 minutes at an average heart rate of 100 bpm yields a result of 514.7 calories burned using your formula, not 268 in your example. Your math is wrong somewhere.

I think Chloe’s videos are great, but I feel like she focuses more on toning the body and gaining muscle than weight loss. I feel so much stronger after doing her two week shred. So, if you are looking to get stronger I would definitely recommend her free workouts. I prefer to do her programs in conjunction with 30-45 minutes of cardio to promote weight loss.

Anyone tried the Custokebon Secrets? I’ve heard some incredible things about it and my buddy lost tons of weight with Custokebon Secrets (google search it).
I froze this video at the 2:00 minute mark. When I was in high school I thought that doing high reps very slowly burned a lot of calories and fat. I learned about 20 years ago that lifting actually burns very few calories. If this study says that lifting weights burns a ton of calories,…..I’ll know it’s wrong. But it will be interesting to see what they say and if they’re able to pinpoint exact numbers. Thanks for this video. Okay, time to restart it…
Can you do a 30 day challenge where you workout every other day workout>rest>workout>rest?
People who follow Chloe Ting have to learn to admit criticism. They jump at anyone who speaks the truth and says that these workouts are not as effective and not scientifically backed up.
People tell me all the time to do more lifting than cardio. Jokes on them because I still run a mile every day before I lift
Stop presenting this ‘study’ as gospel. Really, walking for 20minutes burns more calories than an hour of resistance training? Common sense would say these results make no sense.

And over two months I already lost 7kilos. So even tho her workouts are not losing as much calories as you said, I lost!

The fitbit is made to measure walking like movements with your forearm movement. Buries are actually alot better if measured more accurately. But this is still a cool thought experiment.

Lifting weight it’s way to put on weigh ( not loose it)… Doasnt metter if it’s muscle mass, your weight is going up. How properly train abs in order to expose them an burn fat, but not put any muscles on?

I believe the skipping is actually more but since you did it at a very low intensity it was less. Nonetheless good list!
You are also building some muscle which ups your metabolic rate. I’ve never seen a fitness instructor rely on Fitbit stats like that, they usually tell you the limitations of fitness tech and that results are seen in the mirror.

Really how many calories you burn while lifting varies widely on how you work out. I do absolutely no cardio at all and I stay comfortably under 10% body fat year round. However, I do a ton of volume and have very short rest periods. This keeps my heart rate elevated and burns much more calories than someone who takes 3-5 mins of rest between each set. My rep ranges are anywhere from 12-50 reps. Yes, 50 at times. That said, I’ve burned appx. as many as 600-700 calories in a workout session. I’ve measured this using a heart rate chest strap monitor. May or may not be totally accurate, but the results speak for themselves IMO.
