don’t advise writing down your fears. focusing the mind attentively on anything is a powerful act. if you believe that we create our own reality it’s easy to understand how this could be detrimental.

The Bible mentions two specific types of fear. The first type is beneficial and is to be encouraged. The second type is a detriment and is to be overcome. The first type of fear is fear of the Lord. This type of fear does not necessarily mean to be afraid of something. Rather, it is a reverential awe of God, a reverence for His power and glory. However, it is also a proper respect for His wrath and anger. In other words, the fear of the Lord is a total acknowledgement of all that God is, which comes through knowing Him and His attributes.
Fear of the Lord brings with it many blessings and benefits. It is the beginning of wisdom and leads to good understanding (Psalm 111:10). Only fools despise wisdom and discipline (Proverbs 1:7). Furthermore, fear of the Lord leads to life, rest, peace, and contentment (Proverbs 19:23). It is the fountain and life (Proverbs 14:27) and provides a security and a place of safety for us (Proverbs 14:26).
Thus, one can see how fearing God should be encouraged. However, the second type of fear mentioned in the Bible is not beneficial at all. This is the “spirit of fear” mentioned in 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (NKJV). A spirit of fearfulness and timidity does not come from God.
However, sometimes we are afraid, sometimes this “spirit of fear” overcomes us, and to overcome it we need to trust in and love God completely. “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love” (1 John 4:18). No one is perfect, and God knows this. That is why He has liberally sprinkled encouragement against fear throughout the Bible. Beginning in the book of Genesis and continuing throughout the book of Revelation, God reminds us to “Fear not.”
For example, Isaiah 41:10 encourages us, “Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” Often we fear the future and what will become of us. But Jesus reminds us that God cares for the birds of the air, so how much more will He provide for His children? “So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (Matthew 10:31). Just these few verses cover many different types of fear. God tells us not to be afraid of being alone, of being too weak, of not being heard, and of lacking physical necessities. These admonishments continue throughout the Bible, covering the many different aspects of the “spirit of fear.”
In Psalm 56:11 the psalmist writes, “In God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” This is an awesome testimony to the power of trusting in God. Regardless of what happens, the psalmist will trust in God because he knows and understands the power of God. The key to overcoming fear, then, is total and complete trust in God. Trusting God is a refusal to give in to fear. It is a turning to God even in the darkest times and trusting Him to make things right. This trust comes from knowing God and knowing that He is good. As Job said when he was experiencing some of the most difficult trials recorded in the Bible, “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him” (Job 13:15 NKJV).
Once we have learned to put our trust in God, we will no longer be afraid of the things that come against us. We will be like the psalmist who said with confidence “…let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you” (Psalm 5:11).

Three things I’m afraid of and why
1: Killers. I was scared of monsters as a little kid and it evolved into this.
2: Riding on boats, I’m scared that there’s going to be a storm that will sink the ship.
3: Crossing train tracks, by far my biggest fear. I’m scared I’ll get hit by the train, don’t know why I’m so scared though.
I experience fear all the time and its not fear of anyone but fear of pain and the unknown. I start imagining that i will be framed for a crime and spend the rest of my life in prision.

You can tell by how he hesitates in saying “I was using stimulants to get going…” that he still has shame for that part of his life, and that he is still worried that there will be societal blowback for it. Even when there is nothing to be afraid of, we can become so controlled by fear.

I used to tell Alex that he needs to get to know his shadow so he doesn’t keep PROJECTING it onto me, an innocent bystander and someone who wanted to care for and love him as a friend.
But he refused and so I had to say goodbye so I didn’t get stuck playing out his jeckel.
I feel so dumb honestly, there’s people with tons of physical disabilities with amazing stories of overcoming it by working out and then there’s me. I’m thin but I’m not fit, I use to be okay with that but (this is going to sound dumb) I have a boyfriend now whose very athletic and fit and I feel sorry that he’s with me, like it should be with someone who puts in the same amount of physical effort into their exercise. I’m really discouraged to exercise though, I’m so embarrassed of it. I use to be on a ton of team sports and I sucked at all of them, and I was always the worst kid on the team. I also am always feeling like everyone stares at me when I’m working out, like everyone is judging me. That’s not just working out though that’s everyday life but I’d say it’s worse when I try to work out, so I stopped. And now I feel like a lazy shameful insecure piece of shit. I feel like I don’t deserve the people in my life, I feel like my communication skills with everyone is so terrible. I don’t even know where to start anymore

Really try to implement slowly, this is so true. I went from light inline skating to running, and it was too much of an increase in intensity for me, my body started to panic again. Anybody else here having anxiety as a result of chronic stress AKA burn-out?

If you have no fear, you have rational thinking to stop you from doing stupid things.
Fear is just a sensation, not a choice maker, thinking over and over in your head that it’s just a sensation and right now in the present nothing bad is going on, will remove the fear you’re experiencing [this thing worked for me and probably will work for you]

Im going threw my own ptsd this past july i found my cousin lying dead in his room he was only 39 yrs old i catch myself reliving the event it affects me so bad that if i see people crying on tv or around me i can’t control myself i end up crying i was never like this some days im ok but there are some dark one’s as well but what i learned from this is to live life to take advantage of the ones you love and tell them how much they mean to you and i also learned how to just say fuck it and not allow myself to dwell on the stupid little things and to let go of the past life’s too short

I started working out in the gym once but driving home was just too dangerous because I would feel so anxious while driving. I am glad I ran into this video, I will try again but this time I will just work out in my house where is safe. My problem is not during the exercise but after it. I feel unbalance and sometimes I feel that I am going to pass out.

Yes, it can be scary. I knew someone whose wife died while she was going for a walk. I sit in an office all day so, starting a new exercise plan is scary. I worry that, if I died or just became hospitalized that no one could care for my cats as, I have no family either.
Still, I’m going to have to do it. I had a fall down the stairs a couple of weeks ago. Foot slip, cat tail, object in the way. I don’t know what caused it. Clavicle and ankle still hurt. Still healing.
But I heard about the Apple Watch having hard fall detection. Didn’t know about it, although I used to work for Apple. That fall detection will call the police and family, if you have any. So, I bought one immediately. That gives me a bit more peace of mind, as I begin my journey.

A more powerful method is to simply live in the moment, in the present, in the now. Why focus on the imagined future, which doesnt exist? the courage you get from facing an imagined outcome is also imagined. He is actually going against the quote…”we suffer more in our imagination than in reality””. if that is so…why disect the fear that is just our perceived catastrophic future? when you live in the present there is awareness and nothing to fear. we act out of true inner strength and are ok with any outcome. This is only if you want to live a happy life and succeed, not just externally, but internally.

I have big fear of flipps, and, i am not sure how to owercome it. One thing I try to do is.. to not be afraid of when anxiety comes up. I try not to run away from it, but instead, just sit with it and feel it. I ask myself, what is this feeling that I’m so scared of feeling? What does it actually feel like? Doing this can significantly reduce anxiety because you’re not being inundated with the fear of anxiety in addition to the anxiety itself. Doing this allows you to observe it moreso, objectively, rather than subjectively. And, you realize that this dreaded “feeling” is really nothing. It becomes like a phantom because as soon as you are willing and able to truly sit with it, it turns out that it isn’t even there. It only exist outside of it. It only exists as a [fear] of it, but, it doesn’t actually exist in of itself.
Tho, this process may take a little time. At first, you just feel the anxious fear. And, you look at it and observe [how it feels], rather than looking at it as something that you are afraid of. In doing this, you must allow this feeling without resistance, and then just objectively observe exactly what this strange feeling feels like. Ask yourself why you are so afraid of feeling this feeling. You realize that this feeling isnt anywhere near as horrendous as you have been making it out to be. And, eventually, you realize it doesn’t even exist. It was all a mirage created by your mind of something that you were avoiding due to your unwillingness to face it and feel it. So, you must feel it as resistance-free as you can. When you are in an anxious situation, allow the fearful feeling, and dont try to avoid it or escape it. Dont try to rush through the moment, but rather, just allow yourself to feel whatever feeling(s) comes up and then, observe it. Ask yourself.. what is so scary about this feeling? How bad is this feeling, really?

What really helped me was a heart rate tracker. I got a Fitbit and I leave the heart rate monitor on and that way if I feel scared my heart is too fast I just look at it. It always calms me down to know exactly what my heart is beating at.

Its crazy that 2 years ago I was competing in crossfit competitions and powerlifting and then I went through some things where I developed severe panic attacks with exactly the phobia you’re talking about. Its funny, because I know if I was in the kind of shape I was not too long ago the likelyhood that I’ll die from going on a jog is super low yet the fear is real. The audio quality of this seminar is absolutely horrible. It’s dynamic range goes from ear blasting to hardly audible. You’d think that a seminar organized at Harvard Medical School would better consider something as important as how well the audience can hear the presentations being delivered. I find this disappointing because I really want to enjoy the material being delivered in a cohesive and flowing manner rather than experiencing the ongoing struggle of trying to hear what’s being said.

So growing up I used to worry be fearful not doing because of what could happen then more painful situations occurred nothing major just little things that put me in a uncomfortable positions it’s happened more than I can count and now I don’t fear just like the other comments face them LION MODE.
Ive been suffering with anxiety for about 8 months now, i started the gym 6 months ago to bodybuild like i did when i was a late teen. I didnt suffer any worry about working out or in the gym i did it straight for about 2 months felt sooo good about myself and would even say the anxiety stopped. Ive cut workouts majorly short and somedays ive made excuses to not go at all.

I started doing daily yoga for three months. No anxiety about the yoga. Then I had a panic attack after a workout. (I get panic attacks a lot, but never before around exercise) I was having heart palpitations and felt really poorly
Turns out I had bronchitis and was sick for over a month. It made me feel so horrible. I couldn’t exercise for a month, and I just got back into it. I did a 20 minute HIIT workout and then tried to do yoga after…started to feel like I was going to suffocate. So, starting small is probably a good idea. Thank you for this video and your knowledge

Been dealing with this for 10 years. Exercise on and off a couple times a year. Every time I attempt to again, it goes well for a few weeks, or even a month or two, until I have a major attack. My heart skips or flutters, then pounds, and races. Then I can’t breathe. I’m alone. I’m gonna pass out. I can’t get myself thru it. I go to the ER. They check me out and of course physically I’m fine. But I get no relief. I still feel like I’m going to die. It’s like a short circuit in my brain. I understand I’m fine, but I don’t know it.

I used to do light cardio. Ran the treadmill for about half hr to an hr with no problem, but with this anxiety surrounding this pandemic, I started to relapse into my panic attacks which I hadn’t really bothered by for years. One day while moving some heavy stuff up on my 3rd floor apartment, upon making the last final step, I began to notice I was really out of breath. I was really obsessing on my breathing pattern, started breathing irregularly, and then I started to hyperventilate. My body was shaking as I gasped for air and felt I was getting ready to puke. I honestly thought I was going to have a heart attack. It was probably one of the most scary panic attacks I’ve had. Since then I’ve had a few reoccurring episodes but have been careful about exerting myself. I have had cardio tests done in the past as I had previous issues with anxiety and they said my heart is perfectly fine. I know it’s mind over matter. I’m going to go with your suggestion of slowly facing it head on.

During this quarantine, I decided to get serious with my exercise, after all, what else is there to do, right? So, I would do crunches before I got out of bed, then some squats and arm exercises. Well, I started to take walks. Now, I am not a ‘walker’ as that’s for people walking their dog or pushing a stroller, or something like that. Well during my walks is when my anxiety started to what I call “brain f*@k” me. It would say, ‘you are getting chest pains, maybe its a heart attack’, ‘you are getting dizzy, maybe you are going to pass out’, ‘your legs are feeling like they are going to give out’. That video is rather than trying to talk yourself out of the anxiety, to challenge it and tell it to ‘bring it on’, go ahead, bring on the heart attack, bring on the dizziness, and make me pass out, bring on the leg weakness and make me fall. Well, I have been walking for a month and a half now, and not once did I die, not once did I pass out, not once did my legs give out after challenging them to ‘bring it on’. This theory really works. Yes, I still have anxiety, and it SUCKS! But, at night I do yoga/stretching/meditation, and for the most part I sleep most of the night. All of you that have anxiety know about poor sleep, and waking up tired and sore from your muscles being tense during your ‘sleep’. I’m putting this on here to maybe help someone with fear of exercising. Exercise even at the very basic level is so beneficial to your body/brain/heart. Give it a chance, take your time. We all had to start somewhere, even if its a 10 minute walk, one push up, etc. Meditation, its really easy, dont make it difficult. At night when I am in bed, I just practice belly breathing……….4 seconds in, 4 seconds out. Give it some time, and you will be surprised. I hope this helps at least one person…….

My body freaks out after I run / raise my heart rate for a while. If I start to sweat it triggers too! I then become irrational and legit think I’m dying. I got diagnosed with asthma took my medication and it still happened:/ I worked out for 15 years and this just began 10 months ago any one else have this happen?
I know this is old but I was chasing a dream of being a body builder and was on my way. Growing bigger and bigger. Then…..AFib hit me. Ever sense I am scared or working out. Lost over half my muscle mass. And now have depression in to of panick attacks. This is horrible. But I’m going to make a come back.
Once again, you have hit the nail on the head. Since being in second fear i no longer exercise. I had a few instances after exercise where i suddenly had a panic attack. Which confused me when i thought i was not focusing on my anxiety. It scared me. I thought it neant i must be ill and this was a heart reaction to the exertion. Last weekend I was all out of hope. Decided I wanted to get out the house so went to a night club and danced until I couldn’t breathe! I decided either I was going to enjoy myself or go into cardiac arrest! I’m still here I’m still struggling but it helped.

I’ve improved a lot on my health anxiety but doing excersices still scares me. Anxiety comes with different symthoms to every person and sometimes it makes me wonder if what I’m feeling is phisical or anxiety. I used to have an everyday workout routine and then when anxiety hit me, I stopped working out cause I thought I was having heart problems.I got a reassurance from a doctor, but now I don’t have a motivation to start again because I’m feeling too weak to work out. This story is dead on to mine. I’ve been struggling with trying to exercise from being so scared of raising my heart rate due to anxiety, panic attacks, and palpitations.
My tests were all positive and showed I’m as healthy as you can be for the age of 30.
I think I’m going to just go for it and push though it. I think I’ll start off with easier things to get myself used to it again. My goal is to be in a CrossFit competition next year. I think having that goal in mind will help me have something to focus on to keep my thoughts off the anxiety

I was good before and loved to workout but when I saw my heart rate go up to 170-180 i started to panic and it happened again 2x after that and it made me no workout anymore for about a week and half. Today I finally decided to do a 30 min workout and got my heart jacked up but still finished it so I know it’s all in my head and worrying will just make things a lot worse.
Mine isnt during the workout. If I workout 3 days straight, the 3rd or 4th day its like its all compounded and I wake up with my heart racing and super stressed. Any tips?
HIIT appeals to me but my anxiety is preventing me. I think it’s too much of a jump from my fitness level and maybe should start w walking but thought I’d ask you. I’d rather start with LIIT lol. Thanks!

I’m struggling with this. When I worked out the other day biking I did it because I’ve been dealing with this shortness of breath, tight chest, feels like I’m squeezing my heart when I take those deep breaths type pain. And after I finished biking I was checking my pulse just checking inward, take a deep breath and when I exhaled felt those palpitation and it scared the hell out of me. I wish I had a friend like you to motivate me through this.

If you are out of shape, its a good idea to first ask a doctor if you are ok for strenuous exercise. They may run some ekgs to make sure you are ok. If you are afraid of exercise, you can also start out by walking/jogging in the hospital parking lot for reassurance since help is only a few steps away, maybe even let the security staff know to watch out for you, they are getting paid to stand around on the campus anyway.
I had to come over here and watch this again. One of my friends won’t exercise because she is scared she will die from exercise. I get this way too. My pain is muscle too.

For pople living with really bad anxiety or panic attacks there is NO WAY they can watch something this long.. For me i can do 3-5 min without getting so stresssed out in my body the panic attcks come.. CBD oil without THC is what had helped me best last 19 years

I really think the only way to “cure” anxiety is to forget about it…stop doing things to help it get better what if it’s doing the opposite and growing it??2018 around March I had my.first attack thinking it was asthma So I had a inhaler constantly using it speeding my heart rate having bad panic attacks it it got to the point where I actually thought if I go outside I’ll die and I told myself I had cancer even after the doctors told me I was fine…I stop smoking weed and I start positive thinking and start enjoying my life and I stop having the attacks for about 2-3 months one day I started back the weed I guess it was bad weed or something I had burning hot chest beating heart light head felt like I was gonna die my family help me get threw it…i had issues with death thoughts until I read about God and started praying and learning I’m kinda glad I have this it’s forcing me to train my brain I’m learning things my old self wouldn’t even thought about learning but guys don’t let anxiety control you…whatever you thinks trigger to ur attacks do it..do stop fapping stop avoiding it cause the only way to get rid of it is facing it….positive thinking also I haven’t even exercise or healthy foods and I have social anxiety a bit everyone has different anxiety stop watching these videos and googling about anxiety just face it please no one can help you get rid of anxiety but you!!!!I promise I feel good!!!without medication or any of those stupid “drills for anxiety cure” I’m preparing to leave anxiety in 2018 I still have attacks it’s annoying but don’t let it stop your life I promise man you have one life live it to the fullest I was just praying earlier man questioning god yes I believe in him but I was just asking why why why and I need answers and I swear on my life is got a notification from the Bible I downloaded like literally after I got done praying I will not tell you what the script said but just know God is with you and everyone goes threw and struggle and pain your mind is just weak fill it with knowledge and find stuff that make you happy turn your anxiety into a power and everything will be better I came from having seizures to thinking I had cancer to the emergency room everyday to thinking if I breathe outside air I would die now I’m gonna enjoy my life while I have it

Great knowledge is learned from books, in which counselors, psychologists, and most degree driven therapists try and understand the brain and behaviors of fear and anxiety. If you have never lived with anxiety for days on end, you have no idea what it truly feels like. Book wise you can talk the process, but to help another with healing or coping or changing behaviors is a difficult process in a life change. You have to connect on the persons level to get the anxiety fearing person to surface to begin moving toward a new tomorrow. It is more difficult to reach someone by throwing the book terms at them while their whole world is turned upside down. Mental health is more than reading the book but being able to relate and not look at your watch, make one feel like ur a $ number, do they teach that in school? Rush as many people through to make the most of your time and send them away with nothing, no goals for forward movement but just sit down talk for a few and then oh, times up. Come back next week. Let’s blame all this anxiety on your current situation, it is not helpful until you study and learn from a true sufferer and take notes of how the behavior comes around to debilitate ones life. I hope everyone doing this class is truly ready to be of service for people in need and not just a title of superiority. This is great to have in the tool box to explain in a scientific way, but it is by far the healing process for fearing, anxious, panicked people. I am on a journey to let people know that they are not alone on their anxiety journey and how the mind works from what I have lived through with anxiety and how moving forward is a challenge, not a defeat.
