How Baking Soda Can Improve Athletic Performance A Primer on Baking Soda. Baking soda is actually a popular workout supplement. According to the American College of Workouts. During high-intensity workouts, our body releases chemicals into the muscle tissue.
Metabolic byproducts like Balanced.Baking soda—mixed up in water and downed like a (kind of gross) shake—could have real applications for athletic performance, especially sprints, high-intensity interval training, and other workouts.Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) has benefits for physical performance. It can increase strength, coordination and high-intensity exercise performance.
Alkalinity gives baking soda all of its powers in each of these scenarios, because when you combine it with an acid, a chemical reaction occurs. In baking, it acts as a leavener. Mixed with an acidic ingredient like vinegar, cream of tartar, lemon, or yogurt, baking soda produces tiny carbon dioxide bubbles, in turn prompting batter to rise.Baking soda acts to neutralize the lactic acid build-up in the body during a strenuous sports activity, delaying fatigue. There are still many types of research to be done to truly measure the effectiveness of baking soda in improving athletic performance, but the general consensus is that it does improve physical endurance.
Baking Soda & Athletic Performance. The simple ingredient present in most kitchens may be the key to improved athletic endurance. Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, can prevent fatigue that.Baking Soda Fights Fatigue.
The study involved nine players, randomly assigned to receive a drink containing baking soda or a placebo drink before a simulated tennis match. The sweet spot is high intensity intervals: a number of studies have found ingesting baking soda can improve anaerobic capacity along with power output and, to a lesser extent, aerobic capacity. The general conclusion of baking soda studies is that it offers a small performance boost in short, hard races lasting between about one and ten minutes—precisely the kind of exercise bouts.
Since baking soda is an alkalizing agent, it reduces the acidity of the blood (the buffering action). This action may be able to draw more of the acid within the muscle cells out into the bloodstream, and thus reduce the level of acidity within the muscle cells. This in turn can delay the onset of fatigue.Baking soda can increase performance for endurance athletes, as well. This goes especially for crossfitters or anyone who likes to train with bodyweight exercises.
Study #3: Baking soda increases the time to failure by 34% in high-intensity interval cardio sessions. For this last study, scientist gathered a group of trained, college-aged men.The athletes also received blood tests and the combined test results suggest that sodium bicarbonate fights fatigue and increases athletic performance.
This is the first study of its’ kind to suggest that baking soda could boost tennis performance. Researchers agree further studies are needed to establish any benefit for athletes outside the lab.By increasing blood pH, baking soda may reduce the acid produced by athletes’ muscles, allowing them to keep on trucking.
Soda-doping also causes diarrhea, which could keep the.Yes, plain old baking soda actually boosts athletic performance. Baking soda can induce alkalosis, which is the opposite of acidosis, or increased acidity in your body. If the pH of your blood and cellular fluids changes much beyond normal, your performance will suffer. Can I use baking soda boost my athletic performance?
ANSWER You might hear about runners drinking a large amount of baking soda before a race or meet. This is called soda loading, and it can make.

I am indian…
Baking soda will be taken after the workout.(running)….my weight 70kg…..so,i will take 16 gram of baking soda
Please someone help me..
could you do a video about gaining weight in terms of training and eating?
Is a baking soda different to a simple soda? I actually never heard of baking soda in my country.
Baking soda will utilize the toxins your body releases when you exercise, the harder you exercise the more your body will release toxins
20g of sodium bicarbonate gets converted to 14g of table salt by the stomach acid. This advice is deadly.
Can you take Baking soda and Beta Alanine together at the same time? and if so how do i work out how much Beta Alanine to take?
I use Aluminum free I get at the health food store, the arm and hammer has Aluminum in it and is more for house hold use. I also take baking soda with creatine
Doing dissertation on the effects in cycling do you have any research papers?
Hey Dr. Cobb,
I’m looking into using a sodium bicarb regimen for my next race. Do you think 12 days is enough time to build a tolerance starting from 0.1g/kg and building to 0.3g/kg?
If not, have you heard of Topical Edge (topical sodium bicarb)? I’d like to hear your thoughts if you think 12 days isn’t long enough.
Great video it’s good to let the world know about this powerful ancient powder
Stopping giving you to people this vary bad information… Again (. 3) means 0.3 gram not 3g..x body weight says that now I make this example.. 70kg x 0.3g =2.1g….now your calculations is crazy because in your way will be 70kg x3g=21g this is insane!!!!!
Example
Very very dangerous. Causes reflux and changes the acid ph in your stomach. You have been successful with some athletes. How many does it not work for and have issues? You then ask people to get clearance from your health care provider?
Man in lifting but not much as changed Iv got little bigger an bit cut I’m doing the 8 miles day lifting crazy every thing right but not much as changed what do I do
is it okay to mix baking soda with apple cider vinegar? or does it inhibits the bicarbonate effects?
my mom huge on soda, last three month i drank that with hot water every morning, I feel stomach work better
Gotta be the most inexpensive tip for improving workouts..And just in case it did not depending on individual performance..Keep in fridge for 30 days or as others mentioned by Ric Drasin half century of fitness.I’m right behind ya at 43 years.
i used for my 400 m and 400 Hurdles, helps a lot to minimize lactic acid, i improve my PB
my weight is 58 Kg so i take 20 gr on 1 liter 90 minutes before
I often forget to take my bicarbonate before exercise. The difrence in how quickly I fatigue is really noticable. Bicarbonate mixed with water Add lemon if you want just like this guy said It’s wonderful stuff
You dissolve it in water then drink it….stir until you cant see it any more….the off putting taste is greatly reduced
Can you please clarify? At first you say to take a spoonful of baking soda in water 60 seconds before a workout, but then later you say to take it 1 hour before a workout.
waoo. thank you.Can I use it to my pigeons? if yes what could be dosage?
HEY DUDE. LOVED THE VIDEO, YOU COME ACROSS REALLY WELL. IAM START BAKING SODA MONDAY. (WEIGHT LIFTING) THANKS.
it’d be ideal for leg day to help get rid of the lactic acid so you can get closer to failure or more past failure with less fatigue and pain. people are afraid of doing weird things dunno why, everyone has baking soda but i doubt anyone would of thought to use it besides the rare few who nobody would of listened to about it anyway
great video Ric back in the day the drink for more endurance was mct oil and baking soda… Studies have shown daily baking soda can improve kidney function also. just Google baking soda and kidney function you will see a lot or benefits and studies… keep up the good videos brother…
I learned about baking soda (and beetroot juice) from Jerry Brainum. Ric, please get Jerry back on Ric’s Corner.
When I read something like that I want to know why, it helps you do more reps, how? If I drink a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass I get a headache, I guess its increasing blood pressure. I think a lot of people will say it works if they try it but that could just be placebo. I guess it could be similar to salt (sodium chloride) which helps with muscle contraction. Personaly I drink Beet juice before training as it is high in nitrate which gets converted to nitric oxide and helps with blood circulation. I add a pinch of salt to the beet juice.
Good job sir. I appreciate your work and effort to share with us this home-based truth minus expensive trips to see professionals.
I’m currently loading up on beta alanine, would i be able to take the backing soda while still loading beta alanine?
When you advise to take the baking soda 90 minutes and then 30 minutes before your event. Would that be a full dosage at the 90 minute mark and another full dosage at the 30 minute mark. Or one full dosage split between the two times
becareful. if you ingest too much baking soda it turns into a laxative lol
very informative! I wish I would have seen this before I dove right in to taking based on that formula I read somewhere else. 30g of baking soda in a liter of water on an empty stomach left me constantly running to the bathroom. haha not fun. going to try 1 teaspoon then work up
I would do this intermittently
You don’t want to make your stomach acids weaker
Very interesting. Gonna have to try this sometime.
Right there with ya Ric. Staying around 205, doing recomp. and making visible changes, to the point where I’m getting lots of compliments at the gym. That’s a good feeling.
Keep at it brother!
Rick, hate to contradict you bud, but lemon & all citrus fruits are very acidic.
I take it with a bcaa, beets juice and moringa and hemp protein mix
How can acid destroy your organs when your blood ph is self regulated to be constant?
I’m currently loading up on beta alanine, would i be able to take the backing soda while still loading beta alanine?
I’m currently loading up on beta alanine, would i be able to take the backing soda while still loading beta alanine?
it may upset their stomach because they have eaten something and then taken the bicarb, which in turn neutralized their digestive juices, so the food isn’t being broken down as well, i personally take it on an empty stomach and then go for a ride and then it can concentrate on neutralising lactic acid and acid build up in your muscles, i think food is overrated for energy, you get energy by eliminating acid
I’ve heard of this too, but you don’t want to take baking soda if you have food in your stomach. It neutralizes the acid that is digesting your food, and can cause stomach infections. Take a spoonful 1 hour before workout on empty stomach. Should get more pumps
Hi, thanks for the very informative video. I’ve been searching a video for a detail explanation on this topic and yours is the best I could find. My question is, you said its best to be taken on an empty stomach. I’m a powerlifting athlete so the training sessions usually last 2+ hours and are very demanding, thus having a pretty big meal one hour before hand is crucial. how would you recommend I adjust to still be able to use baking soda to increase performance while still being able to eat enough food before my training sessions?
Huge thanks in advance.
wow power of baking soda…unreal…gonna try it tomorrow before my cardio workout and i will post my experience. thank you for information..especially about upset stomach part::)))) crutial point lol
Its soo good on an empty especially when I spike mine with vodka.. Baking soda martini.
Ms. Burke is clearly an expert and a professional. Thank you for this.
Marcus Guiliano,
You, Dr.Axe, Dr.Eric Berg and other professionals have helped me emensely.
For 12 years I was Injecting myself with Insulin 3 times a day and taking 2000 mg of Metformin per day.
NO MORE!.. People like you and the ones I’ve mentioned above allowed me to get off these drugs and live a more natural and healthy lifestyle.
I now take 2-3 cap full of ACV with Bicarb soda in the morning and evening and by doing this I don’t wake up at 4am with reflux.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
Did this before a few month back. Ran into a buddy at the grocery store started talking about lifting and boxing. Somehow started talking about this. He said you got try it I said I will. I looked to my left and were were literally standing right by the baking soda. Went home that night and blasted some sets of 20 rep squats. Was amazed.
Does using this method result in long term increased stamina or just long enough for the specific workout it’s taken prior to?
Should Dialisys patients use sodium free baking soda or regular baking soda?
i sometime mix baking soda with tooth paste.it is good for removing stains on the teeth. i also sometimes take baking soda after work out and next day no pain in the muscles.
Fuck i take 5 gm and wtf its really increase my stamina i got result in 1 day i am shocked
isn’t it called ”loading”? Baking soda is great. Especially when you drink a lot of coffee like I do.
Gotta be careful though have enough of it and it can effect your heart
My favorite type of video: recording someone read an article on tape. Wohoo
Kann mir jemand sagen, wie ich Backpulver vor dem Training einnehmen soll.?
1/3 teaspoon baking soda in my scrambled eggs ( 4 eggs ) greetings from the Netherlands
In doing some research, sodium citrate is said to have the same endurance training benefits as baking sodabut without the stomach discomfort. Do you believe the same general guidelines including dosage, timing, and using on an empty stomach, would apply for taking sodium citrate as well?
What if you can taste the bakin soda after mixing it in water?
Too much baking soda isn’t healthy, but the dosage is similar to taking creatine monohydrate.
Just tested today on x-fit.
I am a beginner and I am dying everytime I go. Don’t get me wrong but when you lift heavy and then you go on circle training with 180 repetitions, you are so f*cked.
The muscles were usually so sore that I have trouble moving like 2-3 days after.
I had 2 glasses of water with BAKING SODA (colleague recommended it) before workout and I have pushed through it.
I am almost not sore and I am thinking to go to the gym again tomorrow.
I would try workouts on the internet. Try Unflexal. This website seems like you would have luck getting some potential. Good luck on your bodybuilding.
Baking soda is high in salt though.
1 tsp of baking is 1,200 of salt x 3 = 3,600 mg.
2,300 mg is the max recommended daily allowance.
Then you must include the salt included in food today.
mines was 14 grams does that mean 14 90min before workout then another 14g 30min before workout
Are you ever going to share Trevors hyperplasia protocol for educational purposes only?
Sodium Bicarbonate is good if you feel a bit groggy in the morning especially for a hangover. Mix a teaspoon in warm water with lemon and a teaspoon of honey and you feel great in no time! been using it for years. Good for alkalising the body. when ingested your stomach releases hydrochloric acid to neutralise the baking soda when this occurs your body sends it’s own stores of sodium bicarbonate into the blood thus increasing alkalinity of the body. Many/Most diseases are caused by an acid body! If you don’t like the taste add an effervescent Vitamin C tablet.
Cutscene: everyone got diarrhea and needed new underpants…. because they didn’t watch the whole video.
No world class athlete/long distance runner will will ever touch baking soda.
I ended up using it to cook up a couple crack rocks…. whatever it takes right babe?
Few questions. Do i have to take this everyday or only when i have a schedule to workout? (running, biking or lifting). second question, how does baking soda help? What does it do to your body?
Hello sir, I find very good. I consumed 5grams of baking soda in clean drinking water. I noticed the difference immediately. But, There are few people who are against it. they say it’ll damage you intestine, kidneys if you consume 5-10grams everyday. Sir, I play football. Please reply. Is this true? Please reply.
Lemons contain some of the highest amounts of citric acid of citrus but what do I know. Now they contain some something basic. All for trying alkaline fluids but I promise lemons are acidic ric. Anyways
I was on baking soda cycle.I gained 30 pounds of muscle.amazing thing.pump as hell as well.
It works really well for me and my friends who tried it, too. But we use 0,2 0,3 gr per kg of lean body wheight and drink it with at least a liter of water around 3 hours before the workout. Since it pulls a lot of water into the intestines it can lead to diarreah, thats why I wait 3 hours. The effect is pretty long lasting and pretty strong, especially when doing squats and benchpresses for reps.
in how much water/liquid should be dissolved?
is potassium bicarbonate a good alternative? potassium is usually deficient in peoples diet…
if you was a decathlete, and you would have every event following each other with a 30 minute break in between event… what would be a optimal protocol?
Your stomach is an acidic environment that aids in digestion and killing microorganisms that can be harmful to your body. If you neutralize the acid with baking soda, bacteria like Helicobacter pylori will flourish and replicate rapidly causing Peptic ulcer disease and a list of other issues.
The benefits aren’t really worth the stomach and digestive problems that can arise. I did a research presentation on sodium bicarbonate, and the bottom line is that it does work, but probably not worth it for the average Joe. The high sodium levels aren’t good for you either.
How long does it usually take for the gastric side effects to take place? An hour or less than an hour?
i read 0.3 grams per kilogram is used by proffessional athletes which could be about 4 teaspoons.is this amount okay? i have been taking 1 teaspoon per morning in my hot water with lemon juice.
I wasn’t aware of this but have been drinking baking soda infused water during my workouts as I felt that working out made my tummy acid… almost throwing up or something. So, I’ve been doing this for a few months and I had never felt so much energy at working out. This video just popped up in my YouTube and wow… this is truly legit!
What about electrolytes.. any suggestion upon this issue, I feel fatigued all the time due to dehydration.
If you retain water don’t drink it.if your healthy no high blood pressure can have salt start with half tea spoon twotimes a day
I drink 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1.25 litres of carbonated water EVERY day, flavoured with a little lemon juice and aromatic bitters
@ 2:08 If you take a spoonful of baking soda in water 60 seconds before your workout.
I think he meant 60 minutes before your workout.
i tried baking soda first time before the run and i did ran 16.5 kms and still not tired.
this is amazing.
My friend you made a wrong calculation and I tell you why..
Point. 2 means 0.2 gram..no like u said 2g per body weight
Now I wait 72 kg and l use point 3 g basically 0.3g per body weight, multiple 72 kg is 2.16 g basically a small tea spoon..
If I would take 21.6g i would have some vary bad discomfort like a diarrhea and more..
Now usually everyone start with 1 tea spoon max 2 and job done..
Increasing your body’s pH is called “alkalizing.” Lemon juice in its natural state is acidic with a pH of about 2, but once metabolized it actually becomes alkaline with a pH well above 7.
So Ric is correct in his concept to drink lemon juice to alkalize.
Hello
I heard from a nutrition specialist that it should be taken with carbs
So can i take it with gatorade or just stick with water
Thanks
