I’ve been binge watching your videos lately because you’re super informative and I absolutely love that. I came across this video and it definitely helped me a ton! I had the Nexplanon for about 2 years and decided to remove it last year because of personal reasons but I was able to lose weight and maintain. When I removed it, I switched to the depo shot and since then I’ve gained weight and it’s been really hard to get back down to where I was despite my efforts. Hearing how it’s notorious for weight gain and how hard it is to lose weight with it has definitely reassured me that it’s probably this birth control that’s been the problem and I shouldn’t be bringing myself down because of it. All I want to say is thank you!! I’ll definitely be considering a different form of birth control!!!

Birth control for didnt change my weight, and if it did, it made me lose weight. But my weight loss May have been because of me starting to train again after a 2 year break. Though, my boobs did go from a 32AAA to 32A which im not that happy about, but the pill saved my life. My period truly ruined my life because of the Extreme flow and Extreme pain and now my period is still heavy but since i Can skip it, i only stop with the pill every 3 months and i have little to no pain now.
I wish I found you soon before I took the shot. I GAINED SO MUCH WEIGHT!

I started it in late October and when I stepped on the scale three months later I was up 20+ lbs!! (I have always been thin and didn’t think the timing was coincidental). I grew inch tall and it helped me gain weight like crazy the depo shot
I lost 20lbs on Depo Provera…and it wasn’t easy. The thing that my doctor told me is that because of hormones you’ll get hungrier, but not a fast enough increase for you to outright notice it. That’s why women actually gain weight over a prolonged period of time. That really helped me when I started the shot because I really focused in on what I was eating and how much. It wasn’t easy by any means, but simple knowledge like that helped me out a ton.
Personally, im 16 and was having issues with heavy abdominal cramping and heavy bleeding during my periods so I decided to get contraception to help knowing that these are sometimes prescribed for these kinds of issues.
I originally wanted to get an IUD but was advised that since I’m not active and was still very young that it wouldn’t be worth the side effects, I didn’t want to go on the pill because I would always hear about the acne (more or less of it), weight gain or loss (depending on the person) and figured that i wouldn’t remember to take it every day so it was pointless. Instead I first went on the patch and found that it wasn’t useful because my periods would be the exact same but would just start on my patch free weeks, then went on the depo injection and was told it would have no side effects aside from having no periods which I was fine with.
After being 5 weeks overdue for my follow up I still had no period which I was still fine with but was advised to go in the implant instead because the injection could overtime decrease my bone density, it lasts longer and would not have to go through the trouble of remembering to take something every day and was yet again told there would be no side effects.
The day I come in for the fitting I was asked if I was aware that it could potentially double my weight and have some really nasty side effects, I said no, the nurse handed me a pamphlet with the side effects that range anywhere from acne to nausea and dizziness, I explained the entire story to the nurse and at the appointment I jumped on the scale and saw that I gained 10kg/22 pounds and was so unhappy it was bad enough that since I was born my weight has always been a struggle but this was on a whole other level and do not feel great about myself, my appearance and this whole process. I went from 80/81kg to 90kg in 3-4 months.

You’re an awesome fitness/health coach, plus a personable doctor. I was on an oral BC for 15 years and after losing 40 lbs in 5 months, my blood works showed no traces <30-0(whatever the unit is) of estrogen. I was prescribed a higher dose to regulate my hormone. I gained 18lbs in 3 months and after a year of exercise, healthy eating, etc. I have not lost much weight. Should I go on a lower dose BC?

All of that pain could have been avoided if the parents had taken control and set a good example from the beginning. I was one of those fat pudgy babies that some of you think is so cute! I find nothing cute about it. I’ve struggle with my weight all my life. My relationship with food is far more healthy as I’ve got older but losing weight is almost impossible. It takes me years to do what other manage so quickly. When I had my own children I vowed I’d never let them become fat. As a family we enjoy eating together and we love to talk about food but all the time they were growing up we had good square meals with no snacking in between unless you were really hungry then you ate a piece of fruit. As adults they maintain a healthy weight. Parents are the key to the good habits about eating. My heart goes out to this lady. What an inspiration she is but what a lot of un necessary pain and anguish she went through.

I would say birth control gain me weifht. so when i was pregnant with my son i retain alot of water. So after change to nexplenon i hade to remove iy it because i gain so much weight the first month i eat healthy ran but still gain weight.so i woulf say your body reacts diffrent its life you give more hormonea to your body thinking your pregnant. that resaut that water retain weight gain. i hatr birthcontrol. every since i tock it. my body reacts life its pregnant gaining this water waight.

I’ve always taken pills, the doctor gave me low dosage around 2013 and I gained weight breast etc so I stopped taking it. I’ve started birth control again in feb 2019 and my body exploded from 120lbs to almost 150lbs. What’s weird is I’m a vegetarian and eat more like a vegan, so I’m not sure what’s causing it. I hate that my boobs, butt, legs, and tummy has exploded on me. I’m taking this because I have PCOS AND FIBROID and experience really painful periods. Today I’ve decided I’ve had enough I’ll deal with the period pain because I can’t with this weight gain and irregular period.
Interesting about iud bc I read the copper one can have effects like hormonal bc. Or even copper poisoning.
I have been on a combination pill for a little over two years now. I have gained somewhere between 30-40 lbs since then. At first I thought it was because I wasn’t active anymore and eating out, but I’ve been eating healthier and working out for 1 1/2 years now and have seen almost no change. My boyfriend swears that I’m losing weight but I’m really not dropping major numbers. My migraines also got worse I feel. I also went from being a 36D to a 36i cup.:/ I struggle with confidence because of my awful chest and pudgy tummy, back and arms. Glad to see I’m not the only one who experienced this stuff.

In regards to birth control hindering muscle gain, get a low androgenic type and this shouldn’t be an issue. I’ve tried to research what brands are best for this and atm I’ve only found that the mini pill has the lowest adrogenic effect.
Hormonal birth control does not treat hypothalamic amenorrhea. It masks it. It provides synthetic hormones to mimic a cycle and create a bleed. Hormonal birth control prevents you from ovulating. (No Period Now What, Dr. Nicola Rinaldi)

I started taking BC pills around 19 and gained some weight. I thought well i’m getting older now… maybe this is it and then when i gained close to 50 pounds i thought omg it must be me. i started eating very strict and going to the gym… nothing changed. sure i felt a bit better but i didn’t lose weight didn’t gain muscle, nothing. Still was getting bloated even after stopping sugar, pop, all of that good stuff and i was getting bloated to the point of it looking like i was 4 months pregnant and it HURT. Come to find out that my 8 years of being on BC has destroyed my gut and makes you retain water and tricks you into eating too much. along with a lot of other symptoms. i will be stopping the pill after i get back from my study abroad trip and going off of HBC all together. It’s so frustrating going to the gym for 2 years and thinking it was something you were or were not eating or idk maybe that french fry the other day made me bloat… nope just the pill.
I’m 15 years old. I was on the shot for the three month variation and gained about 45 lbs. I was 135 and fit. But I ended with 180 lbs. not fitting in most of my clothes and i got super depressed. i hated to go shopping bc nothing would fit how i wanted it to. i would cry nearly every night. finally my family saw the change and agreed we should switch to the pill. im still struggling with my weight and it’s been over a month. i was forced to be put on the shot so my family just feels bad. before the shot i was able to eat whatever i wanted. now something is wrong with my metabolism. it’s a struggle but im getting there.
I went off of it and not much did change except my mood when I was on it. I’m back on it and a little afraid of how my body will react again haha. But this video for sure made me feel better! Thank you!

I’m 13 and NOT sexually active. My doctor put me on it for a health reason, not as a contraceptive. So I HAVE to use it, it’s not really just a choice. I’m a teen and I really don’t want to gain weight. I just can’t. I like my weight and don’t want to get any bigger. it really stresses me out.

Just to clear things up…
If you do any leg workout you’re only building the muscles… so visually it will make you “fat” so running can help but if you have built muscle before (I was a tennis player for 10yrs) it will be VERY difficult to brake the muscles and slim the legs

You’re lucky you found a coach who actually agreed to help and didn’t tell you women can’t build muscle because we don’t have enough testosterone.
Summary of this video:
For the diet:
High protein diet, you’ll lose muscle but also fat. High quality protein (turkey, salmon, cod…). You will then have to recover from the diet, you will have to reverse diet and build calories. I need to say that this is highly unhealthy if you don’t have the resources to have professionals around you. You should not do any extreme diets like that, instead just watch your portion and eat a little less unhealthy (while still eating what you like!!). You cannot force a spotted deficit, if you lose weight you’ll lose overall weight, but you can spot muscle formation so maybe if you want lean thighs do less squats. She talks a lot about deficit calories but don’t go to extreme lengths, you will gain weight if you start eating a little more.
About cardio:
If you don’t like to run you can just walk. Here she did a lot of training because she had a lot of muscles she wanted to lose if it is not your case AND you are not used to do a lot of sports you can take it slow!!
If you don’t eat meat some good protein substitutes are nuts, tofu and beans:) but you probably already know that if you’re vegetarian/vegan haha

Im 5’3 and for years all fat goes on my thighs while my arms are pretty skinny… People like my legs cuz it’s “thick” but it was never comfortable for me.
I’ve been eating clean and working out more and all that food stuff. I’ve lost like three+ inches in my waist but not a SINGLE centimeter from my thighs or calves:/
On one pill I took (a triphasic), I gained weight and had major mood swings and my boobs always hurt; now I’m on a monophasic continuous pill (no placebo week) and I feel great, I haven’t gained much weight and it has changed my fat distribution in a positive way (more hourglass)

Hi April, I have a question: I always hear “you have to be in a slight caloric deficit” but what is a bullet proof way to assess your caloric need, in order to then subtract? I am definitely not a tall person, but I used to be a competitive swimmer, thus my body has a lot of muscle. I don’t really think 1300 kcal is enought. Let alone cutting from there.

Then that beginning of that year, I lost my grandma to cancer. So in that case my weight went up so far due to eating the same and I lost my period. I gained 10 pounds. I was 135 in my 10th grade year. then I went off the birth control to lose weight. now I went back on the pill to control my period and now I’m 17 years old and 145 pounds. Ive always had “skinny” legs because I was a dancer, and 7 months ago I started going to TRX classes 5 times a week and I started eating healthier. My problem is that ive noticed that the upper part of my inner thighs started to grow, very quickly. At first they told me that it was muscle but it really doesnt look like it. It feels uncomfortable because my thighs never touched when I closed my legs and now they do. I started going on walks everyday, like 5 km, and ve noticed a VERY SMALL change, and idk what to do, i stretch after very workout, i eat healthy, i workout, i go on walks, and its juts growing, everytime i do like squats or lunges it just gets bigger. i dont want to do a calorie deficit because im already very skinny please help me.

FINALLY SOMEONE I CAN RELATE TO! Just like she said I as well gain muscle in my thighs very fast and very easily. I’m a dancer so using your legs is something I do quite often. Because of this though, I feel like my thighs have gotten too big…. and its unproportional. I also can’t really go on walks in shorts anymore because my thighs rub together like no other! I’ve tried powders and creams to prevent chafing but I just wanna solve the problem all around. I honestly wouldn’t mind it too much if the fat on my inner thighs would just go away:(

Ugh thank you! I a man 5’2 and very very small. I a, significantly under weight truth be told BUT thanks to genetics age and my figure skating Andy dance background my thighs are disproportionately large. That’s the only area my body wants to gain. not just muscle but def fat, along with my general lower belly and pubic muscle area. My upper half is so so thin and while I can’t bulk I do cut. I don’t /didn’t understand what to do bc I can’t fathom cutting. I just feel weight wise alone it would be imsame. Like eating disorder status. I always say I’d gladly twenty to lose 2-3 I presume, it much more, in my thighs and lower belly. Alas that’s not how it works. I feel like over the years of working out I tired various diets and calorie and macro levels but in general I may actually be eating more cals than needed. I think every pretty fat girl is the groups funny life line. Shes every guys “I like her but shes big” and every girls “if she was skinny she’d be real competition”… I was that girl and heard both of those shallow comments from “friends” I was way confident though and it made me a little different. I didn’t hit the reality of being big until I had kids and now at 30 married with 3 young boys I’m working up to my surgery date. Its a struggle but I believe this tool will help me find my confidence and get healthy again. I’m more than ready to live my life again.

Hey god bless. I was called a sumo wrassler as a kid and at the time I wasn’t even all that overweight but I became that way very much so over time. I wonder now how to interact with kids regarding weight but in a constructive helpful way? I instead just say nothing like let them be a kid I guess. I’ve been on depo and have been able to maintain my weight but recently, I’ve gain weight rapidly just this past week a total of 7 pounds! I work out regularly, eat decently well and some how on depo gained 15 pounds in total within this year! I have a bunch of muscle in my legs but my tummy started to get larger, originally I was very healthy and well proportions for my height, now it’s out of balance.

I had the subdermal implant and it was awful. I had my period for 6 months. My moods were so bad. It was worse than anything I’ve ever experienced but not even like a pregnancy but literally being on a bad period for 6 months straight. I gained about 40 lbs. My doctor kept convincing me to keep it in. I wouldn’t wish what happened to me on that to anyone!

I had to use birth control when i was diagnosed with PCOS to regulate my period. Funny thing is on top of my weight gain because of PCOS. Birth control didn’t really help me in trying to lose weight (during that time i exercise and try to eat clean) what makes things worse i had depression. which makes me turn to food more for comfort eating:(

I’ve always had bigger legs compared to my thin upper body. I’ve never actually went on a diet because my family and even doctors told me not to because I was already on my perfect weight but ACTUALLY I was all fat and no muscle except for my legs that had both:( so what I did was 1. Diet= lost fat and also muscle mass on all my body, it wasn’t the look or the healthy goal I had but it was the only way I found to slim those freaking legs down since you can’t spot reduce 2. Slowly built up muscle mass again with a lot of care in choosing the right exercises, NO WEIGHTS at all, no squats, only bodyweight mat work, HIIT and cardio. Upped my calories, always kept my proteins up. Took me 5 months but I’m super happy about the result, still have slightly bigger things on the front but guess you can’t change genetics lol still my legs are basically half of what they were before and now everything is on perfect and healthy shape.

I gained 30 lbs in 3 months from the depo shot. The hormonal iud releases 20 mcg of levonorgestrel per day, and most of it actually DOES get into the bloodstream. The pharmacokinetics in the provider literature states that the average blood plasma level of the hormone in the first year was about 200 pg/ml. I have it now and have weight gain and mood changes from it:/ My dr told me it was only local but I believe it is systemic.

This woman is so honest and refreshing to listen to as she details her issues and weight loss journey. Gastric surgery for a lot of people can be the best option but it isn’t a fix all if there are mental health issues due to a life time of being fat and you still have to exercise and learn to eat right or you will regain the weight + more. She takes total responsibility for her weight but I place a lot of blame on her parents. She was obese at a very young age back when the parents controlled what food was being purchased at the store, and had an influence over her being active. I get the feeling that this family being so close and loving also allowed her to do as she pleased because they loved her no matter what and didn’t want to tell her “No” or feel like they were depriving her. They must of been heartbroken over her tormented life at school but did they ever seek professional help for her? She said she would sneak food to her room which her parents can not watch her 24/7 but what was she sneaking to her room? Cookies, cake, candy? If those things then shame on the parents for bringing the junk food in to the home when their daughter had a serious issue with food. If she is just sneaking bread, left overs from dinner, etc. then that’s a whole other story. Parents would of had to keep all the food under lock and key which would of made her even more obsessed over food. I’ve watched this video twice as I really like her positive bubbly personality and find her very inspiring.

Took the depo shot 3 years ago. After a year of using it, I stopped. I wouldn’t stop gaining weight or bleeding. I mentioned it to my nurse and doctor but they said it was normal. My start weight was 120lbs and now I’m 156lbs (I’m 4’11, so this weight gain is intense for someone my size). I gained 36lbs in a year and haven’t been able to shed a pound in almost two years. Nexplanon did cause weight gain but it was too much on my mental state. But the pill… Omg almost 40+ weight gain. I’m prediabetic because of the severe weight gain.

I cant believe you thought you were overweight when you were young. You were beautfiul then, i saw nothing wrong with you. I’m sorry that kids made you feel inadequate. i have unproportioned body wherein i feel like my upper body is longer than my leg length but i realized it was because it looks bigger than it should be. it was bc i danced for quite some time. this video helped
I recommend Rachel Attard!! She breaks it down quite easily.
1. Power walking to replace all exercise..not at an incline either. No hard cardio, plyos, etc. i do walking and mat pilates.
2. Diet is important but fdont stress out about it!!! Hormons play a large part of youR health and Starving yourself will not help.
3. Realize that this will take time. Like, 6months or more to see a difference. So be patient and enjoy just living your life.

I’m 13 and im a swimmer so I have A LOT of back and thigh muscle. now cuz of covid, I decided that I will stop competitive swimming and focus on my body more for. the next 3 months before hs starts. damn I’m telling yall, this is a difficult process to lose muscle, then lose fat, the regain the muscle you want in the desired places on ur body

They provide me a lot of energy and also suppress my urge for food, however I don`t crash whenever they wear off which I love, and they don`t cause me to feel jittery. I did absolutely nothing special on my very own diet regime and I still manage to burned my unwanted weight to 7 lbs.
I know it’s a lot of hard work and an achievement for her but I cannot understand why any woman would want to look that muscular, it takes away your feminine look, you look more like a man then a woman…being fit is one thing; having that much muscle definition, I just find it a thing that makes men look atractive, not women….women are supposed to have feminine shapes…a little bit of fat on the hips or bottom makes a woman look like a woman. A wide back and narrow hips makes a man look attractive, not a woman. So, loosing weight is ok, gaining a little bit of muscle is ok but a woman should still look like a woman.
Hate me for it, it’s just my opinion, but I apreciate she worked hard for what she wanted and achieved it.

so the weight gain people get on birth control is their own fault? they give into cravings and it’s not even the pill itself?? i have the worst period pains… my periods last two weeks (pains a whole week before and finally bleeding the week after)… i need this. i CANT gain weight.

But you see…it’s not a bad thing. I have friends who smoke, take drugs and stuff…but they look amazing. I’d rather be fat and kinda healthy than thin (and looking amazing) and realy unhealthy.
