I used to weigh myself every morning and now I just do it once in a while when I get curious and I could care less what it says because I know how I feel is what actually counts.

This is so true! Coming from gaining a heap of weight on rt4 I was so frustrated in the beginning because the weight was coming off so slowly! I don’t know, I recently just changed my Diet and I’m only 4 days in and I lost 5-6 pounds. I’ve heard when you first change your diet that’s natural but Idk.
So I went ahead and grabbed the paper thanks to my university’s library and had a go reading through it. That number you cited is based off the data gathered from the Minnesota starvation experiment. They simply used complicated math formulas to make a model that fit the data from the Minnesota study. In the conclusion, they even say “we calculate that the maximum energy transfer rate from the FM has a value of 358 kJ/kg d” which comes out to 39 calories per pound, which is a little higher than the observed 31 cal/day, but not my much. My big beef with this “study” is that they don’t use any of the modern equipment we have today. I mean, think of the data we could gather if we put a few people through DEXA scans and closely followed certain blood markers. I know, I know, science isn’t cheap.

Paul…my question isn’t exactly in regards to how fast you can lose weight, but how likely it is to lose muscle. I read a study years ago (that was broken down in layman’s terms..but I can’t find that website anymore. I believe it was this study though: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8002550) that claimed muscle loss didn’t happen until the participants got down to around 4-5% body fat. How do you feel about this study or claims by people that muscle loss is over exaggerated?

Hi, Mario. Please help me understand the thought process. In your video “How Long Does It Take To Get A Six Pack” you say it’ll take you 28 weeks to lose 14 pounds of weight (0.5 pound a week) if you have 16-17% body fat. Here you give a target of 0.7-1.2% for 13-19% body fat. If we average it to 1%, then if I weight 170 pounds at about 17-18% body fat, I can lose about 1.7 pounds per week, which is more than three times more than what you suggest in the other video! I assume I’m missing something obvious here.
I wish I had uncover the “Yamzοkο Weebly” (Google it) a long time ago. I got rid of 12 lbs in 3 weeks so far. There is certainly still need of work outs even only a couple of times a week as well as the foods to eat should be right. The result presented to me is impressive. I keep my daily calories <1,320, carbs <17g, fat <110g, and proteins <66g. I haven’t done any exercising yet. I want to start exceeding when I reach my goal weight of 165ish lbs.
If I divide the 77 days I’ve been dieting, that comes out to me loosing.58lbs per day. That’s 4.09lbs per week, 8.18lbs per 2 weeks, and 17.53lbs per month.
Lots say weight loss should’t be more than 1 to 2 lbs per week.

I understand the whole losing weight slowly. But has anyone actually put on weight from the starch solution? I have put on some weight, eating quite healthy, (I also know this from my clothes being tighter, I haven’t weighed myself) So I’m wondering if I’m doing something wrong.
That first question was an excellent one. I know this is a topic I’d been struggling with, as I want to get to a certain body fat % pretty quickly but I don’t want to harm my performance in any significant way, either, as a first year lifter.
I’m tempted to submit a form check, but I’m always nervous about putting my face out there. So I guess I’m curious just how much “dip” on the way up is acceptable in a low bar squat before deciding that it’s okay to progress, especially if you’ve been lifting for more than 6 months? I also have a lower back injury that’s mostly healed but still bothers me sometimes, which might alter that answer.

This is so true, I haven’t really lost any weight on the scale, yet I’ve lost 4 inches off my waist, I never needed to lose much weight to begin with, just had a little chub around my thighs and stomach.
I rarely weight myself because the number just doesn’t seem to change, yet people have asked about my “weight loss.”

I think people get so wrapped up with the weight loss that they forget about how they actually feel. I have never felt better since I dumped the calorie restriction. If I just maintain my weight,I would be fine because I won’t be driving myself crazy, yoyo dieting.
About a month ago I got over the rules of raw till 4 and regained some happiness but still was not myself. Finally I got over eating at times I thought I needed to eat. Like before I would eat because I felt like I needed to eat breakfast. When in all reality breakfast is essentially just a category of food or a time frame. Truly I just needed to eat three main meals a day regardless of the time. If I have my first meal at noon so be it. If it is at 6am then so what. Once I got over that my happiness is back where it used to be and I am really glad with where I am at.:) Thanks for the great videos

so I used the electronic scale that you stand on with bare feet….I’m 245, 16%, 40 lbs of that is fat….31×40= 1240. Do I use this number to subtract from my maintenance (is 1240 the deficit I create) or is this a deficit over a week? So this is losing about 2 lbs a week? That means my intake would 1700 cals a day which seems quite low.

9000 kcal deficit equals loss of 1000 grams of body fat..if you loose with clean diet and excersise you will look better..if you loose it by starving and overtraining you will look like sh.t… it takes time, and it takes a looot of time..if you were acting as a mad hog for 5 or 6 years you must be prepared to stay clean for 2 or 3 years..not days, not weeks..years..everything else is bs..you should go day by day for a long period of time so you could in the same time change your lifestyle..

I get bored easily and not interested in a quick thing just a real thing for a person like me. I do need a good eating plan. I have my own carpentry business so I can be flexible to do what I need to do. I can meal prep if its what I should do and work out at the gym at night or get up early to work out. I don’t take any medication. I just need something for my age but I really do want to get rid of this fat that is wrapped around the muscle that I have put on through out the years of working out. his first statement is very true. January 7th 2019 I started my serious weight loss and gym for the first time in my life. With lots of green leafy vegetables as my carbs high protein (chicken and salmon only) and fuck ton of cardio, I lost 22lbs in 21 days. Then it went slowly dropping pounds every 2weeks. Zero softdrinks,zero bread, zero rice, twice a day of gym 5x a week(early morning 2am, after work 6pm 2hours every time went to the gym. Occasional pork or beef. Straight 5months lost about 50 lbs from 212lbs to 162lbs and 8 and half inches of my pants size. From xxl to m size shirt. But summertime came in and I get to start to taste again of alcohol I started to gain back like 3-5 lbs a week even continue to go to the gym. Regretted all my hard work and within 6months early January 2020 gain all back those 50lbs

I’ve always told people that I’ve helped to step on a scale every 23 weeks, because as you plato the weight doesn’t matter, and that is what makes most quit right before they are about to have real change. Rather than stepping on a scale all the time use measurements they will show steady progression, but as you plato and get past that stage it is good to use both.
There is more to it but this is just a brief summary, and one man’s opinion that has helped 100’s.

I lost a total of 15 pounds but I guess maybe 5 pounds was gut junk like poop. I went from 150 to 135. It was mostly belly fat and the hole time I kept doing some simple exercises.

Also, to get defined or your abs to show, what if you cut and lose fat but they still don’t show? Is this due to extra skin, are my ab muscles too small to be visible regardless of low body fat % or is there fat still there to be lost? Thanks.

it is sooooo hard to not weigh myself as i am so scared to get out of control. I take a kickboxing MMA class four times a week it does a good job at keeping me fit now I just need to get my diet under control.
the area that confuses me the most is are we only concerned with food intake deficit here or does workout calories burnt also count? lets say im cutting now and im under eating my maintenance by 550 calories but i also burn 550 working out that day totaling 1100 (not taking afterburn in to account) but im 157 at 19%bf so per day i can max fat loss 31*29.83 = 925, so this suggests i should really be eating 175 more on work out days to cover this max fat loss? i think this assumption is sound right???

Great video as usual, but question. Let’s say I’m 175 with 15% bf. At 1% of 175, that’s 1.75 lbs per week, at say 3500 calories is over 6000 kcal deficit per week. That’s 850/day deficit. Does that sound right? Hard to believe is be hanging onto muscle with that deficit, even if I only had to do it for 3 weeks. But I’d go with that plan for the next round of cuts if you thought that was right

Deza scan is too costly and my Omron weigh scale which also measures fat I dont think is ver accurate. it says 24% Bf while I think I am like atleast 18% Bf I am 6’1″ 86 kg 190 lbs working out on and of for a 2 to 3 years and last 4 months I really took it serious and lost about 40 lbs 19kg

It differs from person to person. I remember Jay Cutler (former Mr. Olympia) said that he sometimes loses 5-7 pounds just after waking up. So, metabolism, activity, diet, body type, types of food and liquid we take in etc. all play roles in how fast or slow we lose weight. I lost 22kg’s (48 pounds) in 2 months and kept it off. I had no health and look problems. To answer the question in the video is difficult as each one of us is unique.
Extremely informative. Going to try this out for the next 3-4 months and lower it per week based on body fat to preserve as much lean mass. I overthink these things so this helps me to know a good ballpark for the max deficit per day.

Hi there! I still don’t understand. Please someone help me. If I am 125lbs, 28% fat. So I have 35lbs of fat. And multiply by 31 = 1111 means that if I normally eat 1800 calories I could it 1800-1111 = 689 without loosing muscle? It is odd, Am I right? If it is, i will never be able to eat such a low calorie level
800 calories a day? I do OMAD and am trying to lose a significant amount of weight and even I eat more than that. That definitely sounds dangerous to me but I’m no nutritionist. Just a fat slob trying to fix that and educate myself.

I tried TM for 1 month (actual TM, not variations that everybody run, even though everybody say they run TM). It felt like a complete waste of time and it was a complete waste of time.
Now i’m 2 weeks into /scivationstrong and will probably do The Bridge. Man, volume takes it time, but it never feels like a waste of time.

Paul, the formula gives me a number I would never try to attempt, but it is still interesting to know. I’m finding that my lean mass seems to be more at-risk, the leaner I get, and I am still about 15 pounds from my weight goal. Over the long term, my lean mass loss has been about 8% of my total weight lost, and I am doing a very small deficit with regular weight training and no excessive cardio. Diet, water, and sleep are all on-point. No soda, drugs, or other bad habits.

1st of all, your hair looks really pretty, and 2nd, I felt like this video was made for me. I so needed to hear this as I get so damn depressed about my body and feel like I’m getting no where with my progress in weight loss…but with my exercising, I do feel more energetic and have more strength overall, I can push through a 1hour workout no problem. I bike ride with 50lbs behind me (my kid+trailer) and can now make it up some tough hills, so I do feel proud there.. thank you for making this video. It has helped to reassure me.

One day I was thinking “well fuck this shit I’m not gonna weigh myself from now”. I jumped on the vegan train just focusing on living a healthy lifestyle, eat enough move my body, sleep and be happy (no crazy exercise since I’ve been struggling with a lot of knee-pain and eating some vegan junk from time to time ;)). Very interesting but can I clarify that the calculation gives you the number of calories you should reduce your daily intake by to achieve that fat loss? So if I have been cutting less but losing more I’m not just losing body fat? Is that a fair conclusion?
This is very interesting. I’ve been doing 20% 25% calorie deficit and this calulation does falls into that range.
Question if i according to this formula can lose 3255 cals of fat per week. but my deficit is 4200.. that would mean i am losing almost 1000 cals in lean mass a week? I am misunderstanding this probably? Because most people will increase their deficit at the end of their cut to crazy numbers of calorie deficit and this video is basically saying that you should do the opposite and decrease the deficit the leaner you get, because you supposedly can lose less fat.
I have been a vegetarian for over a 1 and a half and vegan for over 4 months and I have not lost anything, if anything I’ve gained weight. I MUST be doing something wrong. Even my husband is sick of hearing about it and says I just have to workout more to loose the weight. Please where do I find help for Vegan weightloss? I ask doctors and they look at me like I have 3 heads. I am 5,4″ and about 164 and I want to be at 130ish but the scale never moves!

That part with weightloss coming on it’s own is true. At first I too was obsessed with weight but then I thought: whooo cares. Eventually time passed, I felt great all the time, ate till I was sooo full I could throw up (sometimes:D) and through all this time I felt so satisfied, I had zero cravings for fat or fast food. The weight coming off was only a bonus for me. I didn’t have much to lose anyway, maybe 10 pounds, but I lost almost 20 which isn’t so bad. I just had to wait. It took me almost 6 months and now after a year and a half it’s just getting better. I gained about 5pounds of muscle and I’m proud of it. Because I was getting too skinny in my opinion. Now I’m getting my curves back in the right places.
Just be patient, eat enough and be active
I didn’t lose anything (plant-based, raw till dinner, eat as much as I want but don’t strive for any amount of calories) for the first 6 months. Probably because I would 500 calories a day for awhile in my past. Then in 3 months I went from 155 to 135. Now its been 6 weeks and I’ve lost just 2-3 more lbs (weighed today). It can be frustrating because I feel like I eat just like Essena Oneil but definitely don’t have her body lol

The value used of 31 kcal/d lb is correct only if there is no energy loss to activity. In the original paper which you cited. I took a value of activity losses from some of my previous work, but I have recently developed a much better way to estimate activity losses which changes the maximum practical value for the idealized value of maximum loss from fat alone to the actual loss to only 22 kcal/d lb. This mean that it is very hard to lose fat alone. That is life.

My bmr is 2203×1.55 my daily activity which is 3414 calories a day, 235x.35%=82, 82×31=2549 that’s how much calories I have to subtract from the 3414 calories? I’m confuse

Yeah from experience my tdee is around 2000kcals. I’m currently 166 and around 20% BF (obv looking to cut). So that puts me at 1030 deficit before losing lean mass…. I think I’d lose more lean mass than that because 1000kcals a day sounds extreme
I used to be anorexic, and watching videos like these really make me understand how bad it truly was. Doctors warn against going under 1,200 calories a day (for women). I was eating 200 calories a day, if that. God. I’m so glad I’m recovered now.

Sounds like the guys question about programming around 11 min mark might be interested in more of a Max/dynamic approach that guys like defranco utilize which is strongly rooted in conjugate type programming. His need for “athleticism” also would be helped by DeFrancos sports performance focus. Strong bastard is a good program but again, cookie cutters only last for so long.

Fasting is the fastest way. It’s the most muscle sparing way to lose fat. If you train while fasted you’ll preserve more muscle than a traditional cut.

Christopher Gardner at the last I checked at Stanford, is the only one I’ve known to do long term studies with individuals in real life scenarios with differing diets directed at weight-loss. His work to me, seems well thought out. Also at times humorous given what I know of the man. i.e. A vegan showing support for Adkins, even talking it up. He might be worth looking into. Haven’t looked into such a thing in while though…
As far as diets go, I’ve only ever managed to stick to them through lifestyles. That is, avoiding diets, and simply making permanent changes to my diet. Things I don’t have to change once started. Best way to avoid the can food is simply cooking things from scratch. After around 6 months of that, almost everything that wasn’t fresh, or freshish, started tasting like chemicals. It also made fast-food a huge no-go because of the way it tastes. (Can food means things like Chef Boyardee Ravioli, not things like black beans boiled and sealed in a can with water.) Same goes with soda or pop, though with that I just stopped drinking it. After 3 months it tasted like? I don’t know. I never went back and it’s been several years at this point. Around 25 years of 12 Pepsi a day. Even lost an organ over that…:/ Strangely not what caused me to quit. Anyway, I’m only speaking of what has helped me stick to my food choices. Not so much losing weight.

This guy is right, I know from first hand experience.
I had lost 29 pounds in a short amount of time of (2 months) and gained it right back plus an additional 4 pounds as soon as I stopped walking and didn’t watch what I was eating.
So here I am walking again 4 miles per day which equals 2hrs of walking per day and at this point I have lost 15 pounds in (2 months) and I plan to continue to loose weight until I reach my goal and this time keep my weight stable by watching what I eat and exercise on a regular moderate basis.

I’m male, 56 years old, and have lost 160 lbs. since August 2014 on the Starch Solution plan. I weighed myself once a month with good results, but lately my losses are slowing down a bit. I think you have provided excellent advise and I will concentrate on how I feel instead of a number for the scales. Shirts, pants and the way they fit tell no lies. This will be my practice for my last 90 lbs. I need to lose. Thank you for the practical and sensible advice. Now I will have to convince family and friends not to obsess about my monthly numbers and just be content with my continued progress.

Your videos have really helped me! I no longer count calories on a daily or even weekly basis, I stopped obsessively weighing myself and I honestly feel so much better. I try to focus on how I’m feeling instead of measurements and calories and it feels so freeing.
Sounds like many folks responding know how to implement this info. Please help me. Once I’ve figured my number, how do I implement it? Calorie counting? Sorry. A little dense (in more ways than one. lol)

This is gonna be tmi but I’ve had stomach issues my entire life and I’ve been full on vegan for about 2 weeks. I used to have constant constipation and haven’t at all since I’ve been vegan it’s amazing! I also use to eat chocolate everyday and craved sweet and I literally never thought I could go a day without it I haven’t ate once since I’ve been eating fruit I don’t crave fake sugar. It’s amazing! Go vegan for the animals go vegan for the environment go vegan for your health! I am also feeling better about myself knowing that I am not hurting a fly to survive now:)
Alright… so I’m 22 years old 6’5, I weighed 310lbs about 45 days ago. Had not worked out consistently for about 6 years. I’ve lost 45lbs in 45 days.. I started only eating healthy food about 2500 calories and working out for an hour at least everyday. I’m also an automotive technician and am on my feet lifting tires and wheels for about 8 hours a day. I’ve never felt better in my entire life and I haven’t weighed this little since I was a freshman in high school. Is what I’m doing unhealthy??? i diet a lot, eating about 1000 calories per day, and running between 5 to 20 kilometers 3-4 times a week, with all that i lost 6 kilos, or 12 pounds the first month, then the next month i lose about 4 kilos or 8 pounds, and i know i actually lose all that because i also measure my body fat % and almost all i lose was body fat, not water, but then again, is something you can achive with a lot of effort, and as i told you, it was only the first 12 pounds, the next month it started to get slower and slower as i was getting close to my objective
but nutritoin says 2000 calereise to comsome and 1500 to lose wich means your goal is to lose half the caleries u eat boys must eat 2500 caleries

I’m looking to lose around 2-3 pounds a week but I’m starting at 225 so it’s not like It will be linear and I understand that it will be more in the beginning and less at the end. I think the first month or two I will lose 15 pounds a month. Maybe it’s 10 pounds idk but my goal weight is 190 and I want to be healthy when I reach it and I don’t wanna lose muscle mass during the process.
I think it’s fine to naturally lose weight, I’ve lost about 60 pounds in a month by just changing my diet and exercising 6 days a week, the only problem is that you’re going to be fatigued, but that could be solved by resting more days (like one or two more)

Personally, I don’t like gyms. They are so crowded and I can’t do my workout there. I decided to take bodyweight training plan from NextLevelDiet. Training plan is great and I can do it from home. They also give you diet plan which supports your fitness goals.

I have been losing weight really fast and not in a good way either. I am really unsure if it’s from dietary problems like lactose or gluten but I feel very full very quick and after going to the bathroom always feel the need to throw up.
Yea it’s true you’ll gain that weight right back if you consistently eat in a calorie surplus, I suggest losing how much ever weight you can then start implementing strength training, 1 pound of muscle burns around 7 calories an hour, gain 10 pounds of muscle you’ll burn 1680 calories a day, which means you can eat in a high calorie surplus without gaining weight because you’re feeding your body mostly your muscles

I’m now heavier then I’ve been before.
I was 139kgs on the 20th Jan 2019 now 135.5kgs. I’ve been walking everyday since the 17th Jan. I started at 4kms then 6kms etc now up to 20kms a day.
I also started a water fast on the 19th Jan.
I’ve started introducing all healthy foods into my diet now ( again )
It gets harder each time you do a weight loss ( fat loss ) especially as you get older and don’t have the same resources such as money, same personal trainers, no supplements, no pre workouts, no money for boxing or gym, not enough money for the same diet foods. On Anti depressants. Unable to work. Etc even though all of this makes it harder for me now to lose weight, even lack of sleep. I don’t let it stop me. I keep moving forward. Why? Because there is no plan B.
