Poison oak can be found as a low shrub, about 3 feet tall, in the eastern and southern United States, and in tall clumps or long vines on the Pacific Coast. A poison oak leaf comprises three leaflets, with the stem attached to the terminal leaflet being longer than the stems holding the remaining two.Poison Oak: Like its ivy counterpart, poison oak leaves also cluster in sets of three.
The edges of the solid green leaves, while reminiscent of an oak tree, are less dramatic. Poison oak is most often seen in shrub form, but it can also grow as a vine. The leaves of this plant look a lot like oak leaves, and like poison ivy, they usually grow in clusters of three. But some kinds of poison oak have five, seven or nine leaves per cluster.
Poison oak usually grows as a shrub in the Southeast or along the West Coast. It bears clusters of greenish yellow or white berries. If you come in direct contact with a poison oak plant you will end up with an itchy red rash to show for it. All of the leaves in the poison plants are made up of a resin that is oily known as urushiol. It can also be found in the roots and stems of the plants and most people experience an allergic reaction.
If the leaves of poison oak are broken or the plant is damaged in some way, it releases an oil – urushiol – that is poisonous to humans. The oil triggers the body’s immune system and produces a.The plant produces small flowers that are white, yellow, or green. During the summer, the leaves are green and the plant grows berries. In late summe.
Poison oak is generally a shrub, averaging about 3 feet tall, but shoots of it can also grow as a vine. Not commonly found in the middle part of the U.S., poison oak is primarily situated on the West coast, and the East coast/Southeast.Oddly, it is rarely found in the Midwest region. Poison oak usually has three leaf, but sometimes up to 7 per leaf group.
It grows as a shrub or a vine. These leaves have deep tooth-like edges around each leaf. Poison Sumac: This plant is often found in wooded, swampy areas, like the Southeastern and Northern US.These are symptoms of poison oak, poison ivy, or poison sumac. What to look out for: Poison Ivy.
It can grow as a vine or small shrub trailing along the ground or climbing on low plants, trees, or poles. Each leaf has three glossy leaflets with smooth or toothed edges. Leaves are reddish in spring, green in summer and yellow, orange, or red in.18 hours ago · Poison ivy is well known for the reactions most people have from handling or brushing against the plant, but despite its notoriety, many people also find it hard to recognize.
To add to the.If you think you’ve touched one of these plants, acting quickly may prevent a rash. Here’s what dermatologists recommend you do immediately after encountering poison, ivy, oak, or sumac: Immediately wash the part of your skin that touched the plant with one of the followin.• Stay on trails away from brush where poison oak plants grow. • If you are exposed to poison oak, wash the area thoroughly with lukewarm water and apply rubbing alcohol which may wash away the oil from the plant. • Wash all clothing, tools and pets that have been exposed to the plant.Poison oak often has leaves shaped like the leaves found on oak trees (thus the common name).
The leaves of both poison oak and ivy turn red in fall, and both plants produce white berries. Like Toxicodendron radicans, poison oak vines (or shrubs, in some cases) are indigenous to North America.Poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac may be different plants, but they all contain the same poison: urushiol.
Most people have an allergic reaction.Summer: During the summer the buds of the poison oak have bloomed and are greenish and white. The plant is still pretty green; only at the end of the summer do the leaves start turning reddish. Fall: Around this time the leaves are no longer bright green; they now take on the famous reddish look that a lot of people look for.
Just remember that.

the absolute best thing to treat a poison ivy rash is the steroid prednisone, go to a doctor and get a prescription for it. i have a couple times and it completely clears up the rash in less than a week, nothing will work faster or better than this.
The left to right growing pattern was a good tip.
Regardless, dude, find a new train. You’re screwed if you fall or trip lmao
I’ve got poison ivy growing in my yard. we’ll be pulling it out soon though i got a couple paint suits with gloves and hoods, plus safety glasses and dust masks for us to wear to hopefully avoid rash (or death!). it’s gonna be a pain in the butt to get it all out, not looking forward to it at all. lol! i’m not sure I’ve ever seen poison oak in the wild before, so thanks for sharing!:)
Great to see the Orushiol molecule actually spells “oh oh”..
I’m highly allergic to it. It’s not a week and a half of itching its maybe 2 months in the hospital for me. It can all burn imo
Another great vid Chris! Here in the Upper Midwest we have P Ivy, Oak & Sumac. I’m highly sensitized to the Ivy to the point I have a standing order for Prednisone Rx with the primary care. It’s that awful for like 30 days without treatment. Anyway, the similarities between the Ivy & Oak are interesting: leaves of 3; the red leaf coloration esp with Ivy come fall when the nites cool down; plus the Ivy leaves develop sort of a blistering. But like others have said, avoidance is best, for those sensitized to the Urushiol, very unpleasant.
I think the thing most confused me most thru the years is the side notches on the leaves. They exhibit only sometimes, other times they are too subtle or undergrown to notice.
How about showing /or telling us how to kill and get rid of it for good?
At the 4:21 mark just slightly left of center, isn’t that poison sumac? It has a long stem and opposing leaves.
Again at the 4:26 mark BEHIND the poison ivy, I don’t know, but it looks like it may be poison sumac also, it has that long stem with round opposing leaves. Frolicking in the Virginia creepers looks like you could still get in trouble if they’re usually mixed with other poisonous plants. It looks like with ivy and oak the three leaf poems can help, but with the sumac…well…
I’ve never had poison ivy. I didn’t know some people were immune. I have no allergies at all. Guess I’m immune. Gratitude ^.^
Never had poison ivy I live in the woods, I can see some poison ivy out my window right now. I’m not going to rub it on my eye balls, but so far so good. Knock on several wood species.
Poison Ivy I have no issues identifying. Poison Oak doesn’t grow in my state so realistic I’m not gonna see it. Poison Sumac is an issue since it grows in the woods near where I live but I have a hard time spotting it.
I stopped getting large amounts of poison oak the more i got it and played out in the woods
Hell yea im the 10% to 15% that dont get the itch and I am always in and around posion ivy never once had the rash or itch my whole life
Dear Tecnu, I love you. Thanks for all you do. Sincerely, Itchy Itchy-Scratchy Scratchy
Very good: Especially the part about the longer middle stem….
A super effective antidote to poison ivy reaction is the sap from the Jewelweed or Touch Me Not plant. It is quite amazing how effective this is at preventing any reaction, if applied at the time of exposure or at alleviating the blisters and itching that are experienced after unknown exposure. https://www.gardensall.com/jewelweed/
Thanks our neighbor said he’s growing some and I just noticed it didn’t have 3 leaves
i dont get the redness from poison ivy, my brother and his friend once rubbed poison ivy all over me but instead their hands got itchy:0
I wish I saw this before I had to take a nature crap, and wiped my ass with poison oak.
Let’s just say I don’t even wish my WORST ENEMY what I had to go through. Most terrible week of my life.
I think I ran into some poison oak a couple days ago and I now have a rash. Well, really several rashes
Dude I hope that’s not your back yard. If so blow that shit up
@BumbleBee14444 They are equal as they contain the same rash-causing irritant, urushiol. The rash you get is your body’s response to this oily substance contained in all areas of the plant whether it is poison oak, ivy or sumac.
I am VERY sensitive to poison ivy, etc. I swell up like a balloon. My whole body is affected eventually.
(edit) When I was a kid I had it so bad my eyes were glued shut, my face was so swollen.
our experience is to use soap and water immediately. then rub with tecnu. be careful tecnu may burn your skin. never use hydro cortisone cream which cause potential skin hardening later on. my son ended with surgery 10 months later because he could not urinate but only dripping the urine. It’s horrible for a 10 years old. Some physicians have no clues how to treat this kind of problem. now we have tecnu in the house all the time. problem.
The second most painful thing I have ever expereinced. Got it on on my arms and ankles, and it was horrible trying to sleep with that burning itching sensation. Cortizone helped with the itching. I’m looking at these videos so I never have to deal with that again. You don’t know how bad it is until you actually experienced it.
my dad went camping with the boy scouts, and he asked them to collect wood for their fire. they brought back a lot, he stripped it and they had a nice fire. when he went to bed, he used his fleece jacket he was wearing as a pillow. obviously, they had brought back poison oak. they all woke up COVERED in rashes. his jacket was saturated with the smoke from the fire, and one half of his face was SWOLLEN like crazy. he said it was hell. it took most of them ages to fully heal from it lol
i got a questions. i have a tiny rash on my arm that took about 15 hours for just a tiny rash. it aint no more then a inch half inch long. could it be from poison ivy. cause i picked up some limbs. but the rash doesnt inch as bad as poison ivy. anyone know might what it is???
i once too poison ivy leaves, blended them, and rubbed the blended stuff on toilet paper in public restrooms, no idea if it worked out or not but the thought of it working makes me laugh like a mixture of Jafar from Aladin and agent smith from the matirx and then i sleep like a baby.
@zigg99 We recommend Tecnu Extreme for your rash. It will remove the rash causing oil and stop the itching all in one step
I have never had a reaction to any of them, but I still avoid them whenever possible amd wear PPE whenever I have to clear any to keep it away from my kids. Better safe than sorry.
@TecLabsMktg I did, it stopped the itch, but I wanted a faster cure. I tried many ways to treat it on different parts, for me that worked best, however it effects people differently… plus my was everything was common household items,,,
I’m so allergic to Urushiol that I caught it from watching this video….
it does not ruin your day. it ruins the next 10-14 days as it blisters and oozes. there is something you can do to help prevent this. our search and rescue members do this every year. you can drink the fruit pectin CRRTO. it is the pectin you use to make jams and jellies. mix the package with water and drink it. there is also a liquid version too. just take a couple table spoons of it. tastes horrible but it helps your immune system with the skin rash caused by poison oak. it lasts for about 6 months. there are about 7 of us who do this twice a year. not sure how it works but it does help lesson the blisters on the skin. best to avoid it completely but if you can’t… just my 2¢.
Here’s a great video and article that goes into more detail about how to identify, clean and treat poison ivy, oak and sumac.
https://www.outdoorgoyo.com/journal/how-to-identify-and-treat-poison-ivy-oak-sumac
It is never a good idea to cut down with chainsaw…Prepper John
Willamette Valley Cascade Mountain range, living on acreage along the Santiam Riverfront. Within the last 5 years the poison plant has taken over, it is virtually in every square yard of foliage, camo’d, choking out trees etc. How to eliminate large areas of this?
Wear long pants when out in the Bush and the problem is solved
Actually to buy Tecnu in Canada, the only available option is the 12 oz through Safecross First Aid 1 (800) 387-2339 in Toronto. We are working on that though!
Where are people finding poison ivy? Never seen it in my life
I just grabbed a vine that was growing on a tree thinking it wsd some dead plant but it turns out it was poison oak. Now I got a rash on my neck, ears, lips and eye lids. Oh and my downstairs. Its the worst!!!
The box elder tree looks similar but has smooth red stems and isn’t a vine. But the leaves are usually a lighter green
I will never be sad that I have no reaction to any of these plants.
You just helped me identify some Poison Oak that’s suddenly growing rampant on my local trail! thanks Chris
Never encountered poison ivy while playing in the woods as a kid. Stinging nettle on the other hand…
Poison Oak doesn’t do anything to me. Doesn’t cause skin reactions and I don’t get afflicted if I touch someone that’s touched the plant.
@combatvetlawstudent Original Tecnu Outdoor Skin Cleanser is great for removing urushiol oil from other objects such as tools, pet’s fur, equipment, clothing, gloves, etc.. You can see how to use it at teclabs.com
A great way to ensure you come into contact with urushiol is to weed whack some poision ivy, it’s a great time 10/10.
Green/Red Poison ivy looking leaves are know as “Poison Oak”. Never! EVER! Touch that kind of poison ivy as it could leave to SERIOUS scratching and blisters.
Very helpful video. I haven’t came across any poison oak in my area. We have poison ivy everywhere. Your video is much better than an illustration in a book. I’m trying to show my kids what to watch out for and your video was perfect. Thanks!
@rage250 Sounds like you may need to adopt a daily wash with Tecnu to get that oil off before your rash starts. Visit our site at teclabs.com, go to contact us, and we can send you samples to try.
@TheRob916 Well you could do all of that or just use Tecnu Extreme and get instant relief.
It can also spread though the air. The wind and blow the oils off the leaves and get it on your skin. Happened to me and I didn’t even get near or touch the plant.
Eastern poison oak does grow in Louisiana, slightly different than the species on the west coast of the country
I suffered terribly as a child far too many times with poison oak. I have had poison oak head to toe probably a dozen times, wake up with eyes swollen shut, 3-4 weeks at a time, total misery, and another 20-30 times in lesser amounts. No matter how carefully I wash my hands, arms, face, before taking off my clothes, I always get it on my genitalia. Never gotten it from objects later. I have even gotten it when I stays in the car the whole time. I tried the immunization drops, got it from that, guess where. Later tried the immunization drops diluted ten time, may have worked.
The incessant itching, swelling, blistering, etc. is cause by the bodies allergic reaction to the urushiol oil from the poison oak, ivy, or sumac
I have tried just about everything. My experience with Calamine is that it is totally worthless. Alcohol is somewhat effective in removing the urushiol oil from the skin. There are a couple new products available at drug stores that claim to effectively remove the urushiol oil which I have not tried.
Today, if I start itching after being exposed, I immediately take 3-4 baths in a row with Fels-naptha or Castile soap. These soaps tend to remove all the oils out of your skin and stops the itching. If I start itching again, I take a couple more baths. This dries the skin out, somewhat like a mild sunburn. The temporary mild dried skin feeling is far better than the incessant itching any day. With this procedure, the poison oak is totally gone in 24-36 hrs.
Thank you for the tips. In addition to the leaves of 3 and oak like leaf is a poison oak leaf also asymmetrical
Like poison ivy?
chew up one leaf a couple times a year. For years I never get anymore.
I have a question. Does poison oak usually have yellow bubbles in the rash? I recently went camping, and I think I might have ran into some poison oak, because I saw those leaves that look like they had a red on the top. They were all around the campsite. And now I have rashes and they have yellow bubbles. The reason why I know this is probably poison oak, is because all of the symptoms you were talking about in this video are true to me, and because I slept in a shelter for one night. We had to make the shelters out of resources around. Not fun.
Since we are talking about terrible plant I wanna name one, “Nettle”, in my home my grandmother used it as punishment
Recent encounter with poison:(.. thank you for the great advice.
“If you run through this stuff it’s going to ruin your day” haha sooo true
You are one of the lucky few that is not allergic to the plants.
When my mom was young she went hiking on the coast and found a family from the east coast. They had Poison oak in their fire, had padded their bedding with it and were using sticks from poison oak to cook the dinner they were halfway through eating. Luckily they got to the hospital and were okay but it could have been really bad had they not. Good thing to point out for people.
Searching for burger relish ideas and i got sent here, hope it comes out nice cant wait till lunch
Last I tested it (15 years ago) I was immune to Poison Ivy. Hiked my entire boy scout troop through a patch and I was the only one that didn’t itch for the next 2 weeks lol
I can’t go into the woods anymore. The last time I contacted urushiol was under a commercial trailer I was inspecting. Some vegetation was stuck to an air spring. I now am permanently scarred on my face looking like an acid attack victim. The area kept itching for a whole year long after the rash and scabs had healed. Either they find a cure for this allergic reaction, or erradicate all plants containing it from the u.s. Until that day I’ll stay on the wide trails.
i’ve had an organ transplant and am on Immunosuppressants, time to go test if i’m immune to poison ivy
I just swiped my arm against some poison ivy yesterday, about 24 hours ago. I washed it immediately after with some cold water from a mountain stream, however I had no rubbing alcohol at hand. The rash didn’t get any bigger and its not as visible anymore, but there is still minor redness. Is it pretty much over or is the worst yet to come?
love these identification videos!
I guess the saying
leaves of 3…let it be
2 yrs ago…i was clearing weeds in shorts and tank (no gloves)
My property was covered in poison IVY OAK and SUMAC
thankfully…i am not allergic and now I warn everyone! hahaa
I’m watching it bc I’m a paramedic. One of our doctors told us people who aren’t allergic to it won’t get it even if they come in contact with it. I don’t know if he’s right but if he is then everyone in my family’s severely allergic to it. Especially my sister.
Thank you. I have never come in contact with it.
The tree that grows cashew nuts is related to the urushiol-containing plants. The cashe nut itself is enclosed in an outer covering not really a “nut shell” that contains an oil which is very high in urushiol. That’s why you can only buy processed cashes, not “cashews in their shells” like peanuts. The oil from cashews can be used to create industrial resins or paints. And the “cashew apple” fruit the nut grows from is sweet, and can be made into various desserts, including some very tasty preserves, and also as a base for the alcoholic beverage cachaça. I just ate diced chicken stir-fried with cashews for dinner
Tecnu can cost from about $6.99 for a 4 oz up to about $22 for a 32 oz bottle. For someone who uses a lot, I suggest the 32 oz (best value) but it is only available online and in catalogs. Most drug stores carry the 4 oz or 12 oz size. You can see sizes and info at our website click on “Tecnu” under “Products” in the left hand menu. Youtube won’t let me post URL, so click on my ID for link to site
My oldest son actually did the roll around show off routine. You can guess what has happened since.
I grew up playing in poison ivy. I once chopped up a bunch of it in backyard with my mom as a kid. She got a rash, I didn’t.
Poison Oak does not grow in Ontario, Nor does Poison Sumac. Poison Oak can be found on the Eastern and Western areas of Canada, but Poison Sumac is limited to the USA…I believe. Poison Ivy grows everywhere here.
Great video! That is why I patented a new line of sleeved gardening gloves called NOMPI gloves. Check them out! Great way to keep the urishol from touching your skin in the summer.:) Thank you for the info!!
The best video on poison ivy that I’ve seen. Very helpful. Thank you!!!! Thank you!!!
I used to catch it often. One day I learned what it looked like… I really wanted to see if the person actually knew it aas for sure… so I grabbed a leaf, wadded it up & rubbed it hard on my hand.. the next day or the day after I had a small rash exactly where I rubbed it. It was small like 1½in long but it was raised about a ¼in off of my hand.. I washed my hand with bar soap, then scratched the blisters off, washed it again, rubbed it with rubbing alcohol then put calamine lotion on it.. it was gone in 2days.. ever since then I get very mild symptoms. I walk through it because I basically have no choice when I’m out in some woods. But my legs will kind of itch but not produce any blisters. & its gone in a couple days.. even if I don’t wash up the day of contact.
I only ever get it on my knees from mushroom hunting doesnt even get itchy because of were its at just forms a giant scab and peels off in a few days.
Cool quik vid. Luckily I’m not affected by it. However it isn’t fun stuff.
Urushiol may take days to cause a reaction.. depending on the epidural thickness. This mimics ‘spreading’.. it’s not actually spreading.. it was already there it’s just reacting now (and it could have been removed with the proper solvent). Scratching does not spread the rash. Interestingly, aluminum chlorhydrate acts to block the action of urushiol.. think Arrid Xtra-dry.. scientists are not exactly sure how or why.. but evidently it does act as a poison ivy preventative.
Any advice on getting rid of the plant on one’s property? Thanks for the video, and hopefully the answer to my question.
I surveyed land in the midwest for 40+ yrs and this plant was always present… I have seen it grow 30 feet high up trees and choke them to death so only the poison Ivy was left. I would take a machete and chop through vines 2-3″ thick to kill it…
My apologies for the inappropriate comments that were left. They have been deleted. Please note disgusting comments will be removed.
My stupid ass immune system when introduced to some antibiotics, all kinda of animal hair, most pollen, mangos: Frantic screaming and swelling
My immune system when introduced to poison ivy: lol histamine machine broke
I have one that looks like a tree on my back yard! I posted a video on my channel!
im one of those people that poison oak/ivy doesn’t affect. my siblings always got stung but never me. (we lived in the woods and hiked everyday that wasnt raining.)
Lol you’re getting a stupid comment from me but it’s true there are a lot of hypochondriacs out there in the world that believes everything makes them sick so just yeah….
Pretty sure I’m immune. I’ve had two instances of people getting hit hard and I got nothing.
This helps so much! I never really knew how to identify it and those little sayings sure make it easy to remember
Thank you!
im highly allergic to poison ivy, i have to go on steroids every time i get it
My grand father had a friend that burned a pile of poison oak and the vapers filled his lungs and he did die from it.
My brother: practically rolling in poison ivy, no reaction
Me ten feet away: rashes everywhere
Also, lawnmowers are my enemy and poison ivy rash behind the ears is really annoying.
Tecnu seems to have work very well for me even after a week of not recognizing that I had actually caught it.
aaaahhhh!!!! I got poison oak today at least im not my friend when we were climbing a cliff and he grabbed a whole plant to help himself up! 0_0
how long does poison take to grow?usually like 8 weeks, right?
Great video! Poison Oak and Poison Ivy are a little different looking, but both are identified by the “leaves of three”. They both cause the same nasty rash which is an allergic reaction to urushiol oil that occurs naturally on these plants. Where you are in the country will determine which one you run into (we are lucky enough to have both in the southeast). The one I have a harder time identifying is Poison Sumac which looks completely different but produces the same urushiol oil and causes the same damn rash.
I’m one of the lucky people immune to poison ivy. Really lucky since the camp I went to as a kid was covered in it.
I always joke that I have so few allergies, I actually have negative ones, since I don’t even react to normal stuff like Poison Ivy.
My husband is a wildlife photographer, and often comes into contact with poison ivy. What a lot of people don’t realize is even the vines on trees in middle of winter still have the oils in it. A wild plant called “Jewelweed ” can help give relief. break the stem and rub the oils into your skin. There are poison ivy creams that have the jewelweed oil in it. If you get a bad case of of the rash, start taking benadryl right away. It helps your body fight the reaction.
Very helpful. I am going to check out my yard first thing in the morning. There’s LOTS of stuff going on including massive poison ivys:(((((((
The key to getting more subs is to be less annoying about asking, not more annoying…
When I was a kid back in the ‘50’s the first time I ran headlong into poison oak I was itching and scratching for a long time. But my mother got some goats, that ate the plants and I drank their milk, and before long I became immune to the poison, and I could runaround in the plants and never had a problem with them again!
So my suggestion is, if you have poison oak or ivy on your property, get a few goats, drink their milk and get immunity from the plants!
The goats eat the plants and digest them, you drink the milk and get some of the toxins from them into your system, just enough for your system to fight the toxins and you will become immune to them!
Worked for my whole family and my son and his family!
Mother Nature has a way of protecting us if we let her!
. I don’t get why some exposure to things increase allergic response while other exposures reduce. Allergy shots are just gradual ramped up exposure to the allergen to get the body use to it. Its believed early exposure to peanuts helps prevent peanut allergies.
Also, how come it seems different allergens produce different symptoms, if they are all allergic responses.
Great video, short and to the point. I’m very allergic but only develop the rash several days after exposure so I’m not sure where it’s coming from. Now I know what to look for…
Nah..I can roll around in that stuff..used to get it as a kid but then one day just stopped..haha when hunting I’m always the brush hog because of it
Yes, but it’s a matter of getting the urushiol off before your body reacts to it. If you know you have been exposed, wash with a product like Tecnu to remove the urushiol before the rash begins. Tecnu will work for most people within 2-8 hours of exposure.
I can walk through patches of poison ivy in shorts and flip flops and nothing. My wife looks at it and breaks out in huge rashes all over
Poor Poison Ivy get it in eyes your then tell me how poor it is
When I was little I got it inside of my eye and I looked like quasimodo all summer:(
Great remedy story:
I’ve only gotten a poison ivy breakout once in my life at a summer camp. They gave me calamine lotion and some other junk. I had rashes head to toe. I was young and embarrassed so I called mom to come get me. She couldn’t come until the next day. All the kids went in a trail hike and the counselors let me hide in my room all that day. I was miserable, crying, and sooooo itchy! But during the hike, the cook from the mess hall told the counselor to let me jump in the pool while the others were out. The counselor did just that. She took me to the pool, alone and let me have the whole pool to myself for about an hour. When I got out almost all of the rashes and redness was gone except where I scratched excessively. I was stumped. So was the young counselor. She took me back to the mess hall and asked the cook if he know that would happen. He said, “of course, didn’t you?” Lol that poor lady has been dealing with my whimpering all day. She got every remedy and bit of advice that she could muster up and all the had to do was throw me in the pool! We called my mom back that evening and told her I was better and stayed there. Apparently chlorine is a fast way to get rid of it.
—the next day at camp they let us do wood burning projects and passed out templates and nice wooden boards. I didn’t care for the template options and made my very own Ouija board. Apparently they weren’t as impressed as I was since it was a southern Christian camp. No one told me!
I also flipped over our canoe, intentionally, right after the counselors instructed us how to prevent them from being tipped over. Pfft. At least I was listening! That’s more than I could say for all the those sheeple kids that were busy trying to whack fish that weren’t there while the counselors talked safety. They should’ve appreciated my abstract reasoning skills, my ability to reverse engineer sentences, and of course, showing initiative. Those were exemplary leadership skills in the making! I knew I was predestined for a leadership role, the moment I plunged into that icy river and two other girls followed immediately after without the slightest hesitation… as the canoe toppled over us, trapping us within.
I noticed that some of the poison ivy leaves were either consumed or diseased. And natural ways of controlling Poisson Ivy besides goats?
Great video the best one I have seen yet I love the side-by-side pictures of how it can and can’t grow. I would love to see more on sumac and Ivy
I’ve been land surveying in the south for almost 20 years, no problems. The rest of the crew cannot look at for fear of exposure.
@plumcrazypurp Many people try to avoid prescription steroids unless absolutely necessary. Your doctor will advise when such measures are needed. And if you know how to identify and clean the oil off your skin before an outbreak you can possibly avoid having to go through a misery of a rash.
@TheRob916 Yes, everyone’s immune system is different and it can take some people longer to heal
I’m super alirgic to posin if I touch it I will be half dead in a hospital. I have an insane reaction from it that has almost killed me more then once
Just wanna ask if the scars of poison ivy will leave in your skin forever? I have lots of big circle scars from poison ivy.
Luckily we don’t have these in Europe. We have nettles with needles of calcium silicate that break off on contact and inject formic acid, histamine and acetylcholine into the skin. I was pushed into a field of those as a 10 year old. It was highly unpleasent.
yes they are innocent, because they dont exist. At least not in my part of the world 😉
Aww I was hoping you’d mention how urushiol is used to make lacquer and when the name urushiol comes from
Poor poison ivy??!! I hate that little POS right now….it’s got me good…..really good. My eyelid is swollen and rash up and down my arms.
Okay thank you for the identification I have some of this crap growing on my cedar trees,, I have six cedar trees and it is taking all six of them,,what kind of weed killer can I use without hurting my trees can I use rubber gloves to rip the vines down,, I do not want this crap on the trees,, we might be losing one of these trees anyways,, what can I use for some sort of pesticide,, we might have to cut down that tree to keep the other trees from getting it,, great video
i had a friend that wiped with poison ivy, he said it was the worst pain hes ever experienced a long period of time.
I seem to have no response to poison ivy but poison oak gets me good. Sumac doesn’t affect me like the other two but it’s like a burning sensation that goes away after I take a shower. I’m confused.
Poison ivy, oak, and sumac don’t grow in my state but I’ve watched this just in case I’m stuck in another state. Very informative and clear, this would be a good video to show to kids on how to survive in open forests. (:
You’re gonna need an ocean
of calamine lotion
you’ll be scratching like a hound
the minute you to start to mess around
poison ivy, poison ivy.
Partial lyrics to 50s song “Poison Ivy” song by the Coasters (Can see on YT)

Back in the day I think it went No. 1.
One trick to spot poison sumac is that the stems are red, not green. We a picture on our website teclabsinc. com go to tips and advice at the top and check out images and video.
Wait, does this mean that Urushiol could be used in HIV treatments? By activating the T cells, which don’t mount a defense against the virus until it’s numbers are too great and it’s too late.
Wow! I never seen this filthy plant before. Imagine all the inexperienced woodsman who wiped their arse with poison oak leaves and found a surprise 30 mins later. The plants should be renamed the “Devils pubes” or “3 leafed bitch” or something deadly like that.
Yeah, even dead poison oak still contains the rash causing oil, urushiol. Hope you recover quickly. If you need some Tecnu, you can save money with a coupon on our web site home page
i can only get poison ivy even tho i did came contact with sumac before and it did nothing to me. i dont know if poison oak is in state of pennsylvania but i could be wrong
I thought T-cells looked like SWAT officers and while I’m at it, aren’t blood cells waifus?
I had poison oak in my blood stream and had to get a steroid shot. Not fun at all! Imagine itching inside and not being able to scratch it.
WRONG!
The leaves of poison ivy, oak, sumac… secrete urushiol oils through their stomata… so yes, you can come in contact without the plant being damaged.
Urushiol is produced by the plant for defense against predators… primarily insects, which is why you don’t see common insect herbivores like, grasshoppers, aphids, scales, mites, & nearly all caterpillars of the Lepidopetra Order feeding on the plant.
wait there is some element R on the diagram for urushiol… but there is no element with the symbol R…
my immune system is a lot of things, over eager aint one of em.
Can you talk about virginia creeper, wherevit came from,mm etc.?
Ah yes, I will enjoy remembering 30 seconds of this video when poison ivy comes up in conversation 3 months from now
as a kid in the santa monica mountains very few of the people I knew had reactions but those that did really got it bad. as we got older we would often challenge each other to eat poison oak with no reaction at all. it is said it can help provide a build up of resistance to leaves of three. I could never have the fear of having a good outdoor romp because of it but I have know a good few who have to think that way. the ooze is gross.
I used to be alergic so bad that I had to get cortisone shots each summer. Doctors told me I had the worse case they had ever seen.
Then i took oral ivy. It worked! I made all my kids do the daily regimen. Now they’re imune too.
Imagine, a homeopathic medicine that works! And it’s about $15.
I have tried ALL other “remedies”. Oral Ivy is the ONE that works.
Leaves of three let it be. I’ve found a shower after the possibility of contact reduces or eliminates an outbreak. The sooner the better, and definitely not a hot shower, as the hot water will open pores. Some people swear by rinsing with kerosene.
Let’s say a dog got into poison ivy. Even if it doesn’t bother THE DOG, if it still touches damaged poison ivy, how long does it take for all that poison ivy oil to be 100% gone?
Leaflets 3 resemble me, head, neck, arms, torso. Cus some 3 leaves aren’t poison ivy, there’s the rub, ha. Watch horticulturist Mr Poison Ivy.☘
Is it normally bright green?
I always thought poison ivy was dark green.
Jeez, there are so many mnemonic devices to remember. I need a mnemonic device for these mnemonic devices.
thank you. Just got poison ivy, first time in 20 yrs. Same area. same bush. For some reason, got it this year. thanks for this, so i dont get oak, as my oak tree has a vine going up it, googled images, and its poison ivy going up the oak! oye vaye! but, now i know: its real!
Thank you. Very helpful as they don’t all look the same and there are other lots of things that have 3 leaves!
@thunderhead79 Yes, urushiol in the amount that can fit on the tip of a pin can start a full blown rash depending on how sensitive you are of course.
I have tons of poison ivy..it will be impossible to get rid of it all… some one said buy a goat they love it..
How about, if I look like poison ivy, don’t brush against me otherwise you will develop a bad itch.
beware if u touch the oil it secrete you get a skin irritation
You get it, you’ll know. Trust me! Like being pricked with needles at touch. Has to pretty well run its course other than using stuff for itch. A wash is relieving done several times per day, at least a couple in 24 hours. Poison ivy, which I also have had at same time is more like a chain of bumps instead of whelps.
Shaky Cam!
Poison oak ruined my Northern California childhood summers. I got it, and got it bad. I looked like something out of a horror film. Even when I could avoid it, my less sensitive siblings and our pets would bring it back with them and spread the invisible oil everywhere. What was I gonna do, live in a bubble? The stuff is EVERYWHERE for hundreds of miles up and down the coast, on every trail, and from ocean to the hills.
THAT is why I as an adult I do my hiking at 5000 ft. and above. I hate poison oak.
TY I learned something today! I will remember this next time I go hiking.
Bleach works but it is horrible to your skin causing tissue damage. Using a product like Tecnu prevents that kind of damage.
Nobody: What does the fox say, back in the day: 4:09
if its gettin bad, take a shower and gently scrub until it kinda opens the wounds a little with a cheap body wash because it has alcahol in it…(its almost orgasmic it feels soo good) pat yourself dry, rub some baking soda paste all over it and let it dry(it will suck the bad stuff out) pat some vinegar(it stings a little) then rub a banana peel over it,,, it stops the itching and you can now sleep!!!.. worked for me, poison oak freakin SUCKS!!! I only wish it upon my x wife…
Another facts… you cannot catch it in the air unless its being burnt. Also you cannot catch it from someone who has it, after they wash the area. The reaction you get is just a reaction, you can’t spread it by itching if there is no more oil on you.
I got poison ivy on my face once, and I don’t care what you say, nothing is ever gonna change my mind that Poison Ivy is terrible horrible plant that should burn. But no you can’t even burn poison ivy because then it’ll get into your lungs. This is literally one of the most toxic plants ever and nothing will ever change my mind about that
Leaves of three, beware of thee, Leaves all the rest the hell alone too!
Very instructional. Very well done. Best video I’ve seen on the topic. Clear and concise.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SYMMETRICAL::::::::::::::DDDDDDDDDDDDDDD OMGGGGGGGGG <3 and also i thought it was suposed to be ''leaves of three, let them be''
How is it loud even with the volume almost off? Thanks sound editor
A big THANK YOU for this video. We played golf today and the course was covered in poison ivy which I was able to identify and avoid.
We visited a local park that is very tended to. we ran around on a large patch of ground cover that fit poison ivy criteria: leaves of three, ridged appearance. could this have really been poison ivy? it was a large amount and close to the ground. I would never have noticed it because it blended well into the grass. I’m really bad at identifying and it’s making me a bit paranoid 😉
Love the list of mnemonics. Oh, dear, we’ve got lots of Virginia creeper, too, growing through the gaps of the fences, all from the neighbors yard! Very informative video. Thank you very much.
I’d have been interested in learning about how urushiol protects poison ivy from microbes? I mean, if it’s not meant to repel us, what is it meant to repel? And how do these plants fit into the larger ecosystem? Are they just your average food plant to most animals?
That’s exactly what I have along my fence and even grows over the roof of my shed. My cats rub on it and I get the rash if I pet them.
nursery rhythms helps alot….. you need cut your grass with pants and gloves on
I always had trouble identifying it. This helps a lot thank you.
Poison sumac rubbed against my leg and got black tar on me and then I got chicken pox same time lol
@iceimprange We can’t diagnose your rash, but if you are unsure it is best to see a medical professional. You may even want to try a pharmacist, they may be able to help.
You forgot “If the leaves are shiny, don’t use it to wipe your hiney.”
Are there similar, yet non poisonous vines/ivy in the northeast? Is there “always” a hairy vine?
i touch poison ivy but i wait long but i never things in my hand
Just us and.. hamsters?!
Oh hamsters, our long lost brethren! <3
When I was a kid I got into a thicket of poison ivy and I remember it was one of the suckiest parts of my childhood lol. I sure as shit know what they look like now.
great thank you, I have very similar leaves of three all along my back fenece, need to check the other points….never had a rash….
Good vid but I’m not going to lie. The dubstep nature video combo kind of killed it for me. it’s just too out of place.
I never got hit by poison Ivy, Maybe i’m immune. Still always watching out for it and never touching.
this was prefect to me. Thank You never heard the mittens one thank you!
Very good video. One tip: the plural of “leaf” is “leaves.” Not “leafs.”
So, someone with AIDS and non-existant T cells would not react to poison ivy?
“Most people don’t react to urushiol the first time they’re exposed”
I must be supremely unlucky then. The first time I ever touched an (I assume) sumac plant, nearly my whole left arm broke out just from getting a small brush on it. Didn’t realize what it was until the next day. Had a severe migraine from it, then another weaker one two days later. The rash took almost three weeks to fully go away and hurt if it was touched. I needed to wrap my entire arm in bandages soaked in calamine lotion to even begin to cope with it. Never in my life had I been so happy to have a blister break on its own.
We’ll eventually find a way to conquer all allergies, so this is good news.
I served my mother a poison ivy salad I handpicked when I was 3 or 4. I really don’t react to it. I also pulled up some vines one fall until my mom pointed it out it was poison ivy. I did end up with some mild itchy arms that went away by the next day but I think that was because of little scratches from doing so much yard work.
it turns out they had Tecnu at the local CVS.They had it there because poison oak grows all over the place where i live. The stuff works great for soothing the rash and washing off the urushiol.
I really don’t know why they “don’t” show kids this stuff in school! My lil brother and his friend got into poison ivy so bad, they’re faces looked like MoNsTErS!! seriously they both went to the Dr.”s and suffered a lot.
Excellent explaination! Only if I could have watch this earlier before I got the posion. Thank you.
