While some types of cardio machines are more accurate than others, none of them will be 100% accurate. In general, they overestimate your calorie burn by 15% to 20% because they can’t account for all the individual factors involved in calorie-burning. The good news is that you can improve your estimated burned calories.
Although you may feel good after your exercise machine states you have burned a whopping 500 calories in 30 minutes, the numbers are not always accurate. The calorie burned tool on cardio machines such as treadmills, elliptical machines and exercise bikes should only be used as a guideline and not as an exact calculation of energy expenditure.The long and short of it is the calorie counts on machines aren’t very accurate. The best tactic is to use these counts as a very rough estimate and probably assume you burn fewer calories than it.
Cardio machines like treadmills, the elliptical and the Stair Master all keep track of calories burned during a workout, but since they cannot consistently read your heart rate for the entire duration of your cardio session, they have no way to give you an accurate account of that number.A machine’s calorie count could also be impacted by the kind of machine it is. Precor calorie calculations rely on standard ACSM formulas for the treadmills, steppers, and bikes. Due to the unique motions of the EFX and AMT, the formulas for these products were developed by Dr. Emily Cooper of Seattle Performance Medicine. For the EFX, the equations consider user weight, age, ramp angle, resistance and stride rate.

Before you proceed to believe that you really just torched 500 calories on your favorite cardio machine, chances are that number may be right for someone but not necessarily for you.

Maybe that is true for those who exercise on a regular basis but for those who are just starting out, in my opinion, are encouraged to move more. I know I lose weight better when I can see the data on where I am lacking. Like getting my heart rate up or if I didn’t move enough that day.

@Custom09 Simply put it is not viable enough to even worry about. Everybody will burn calories at different rates depending on how their body processes the food. Be more concerned with how many calories you are intaking through food and monitor the scales.

If you hit option on the elliptical you can put in your weight and age and the calories will be a lot more accurate
Maybe you’re feeling more gassed and shit on the stepper cuz you’re engaging more muscles and more movements that you’re not used to than for example incline walking, which your body is used to. But hey, it’s just my thoughts man, it’s all it is…

The most accurate readings you can get are “Underwater weighing” at a university or hospital…..Which these guys probably don’t know because they aren’t legit. Wasn’t talking about me about being out of gas, meant it for majority of viewers who are probably out of shape. This is regarding 15 incline and I said 6 speed but it was a guess. Meant something along the lines of a fast jog on max incline is seriously no joke which is why I advised others not to do it.
at the moment i do cardio on the bikes for 30 minutes on level 7… says it gets around 280 calories and around 10 to 12km… do you think this is around the calories i burn?? i dont find i have to concentrate on my breathing at all.. i have just started in the gym and i concentrate more on fatigue.. i dont want to push myself too far because i want to make the full 30 minutes, in the last few minutes though i try to go as fast as possible

You have to type in your body weight before you start. Every cardio machine that calculates “calories burned” is going to use a default body weight if you don’t type it in, which is going to vary from machine to machine. That’s why you see the variation. Start putting in your body weight if you want more accurate results
I do a lot of cardio but just don’t get any leaner. I stay around 200 pounds, just under 30 percent body fat. Doesn’t make sense
You don’t need protein shakes anyway. Protein shakes help with recovery but if you want to gain weight you just need to increase how much you eat.

Just use the heartrate stuff on the equipment if they have it. I would say that gets you within 50 calories of what it is, depending on weight and intensity of course.
