A high-protein diet encourages eating more protein and fewer carbohydrates or fat to boost weight loss, improve energy, and enhance athletic performance. Protein is an essential nutrient for health. It is responsible for a number of important functions in the body, including hormones, enzymes, and cell repair and maintenance.Per Women’s Health, high-protein diets lead to weight loss because the human body does more work to digest and metabolize proteins than other food substances. The stomach also feels full fast and for a longer period of time thanks to the high-protein foods being consumed in this diet. There are some distinct advantages that come with this type of diet, but there are some disadvantages that must be considered as well to determine if making this life change is a good choice to make. The Pros of a High Protein Diet.
1. The initial weight loss is immediate. People can lose 10+ pounds on a high protein diet almost immediately. If well-planned, a high-protein diet may also help you eat healthier in general.

High protein diets boost metabolism, decrease hunger, keep you full, and preserve muscle mass.
While an 8-ounce yogurt contains about 11 grams of protein and a glass of milk around 8, a 3-ounce piece of meat includes up to 21 grams of protein. As outlined in their book, “Protein Power,” the Eades’ diet focuses on high protein, moderate fat, and low carbs (similar to the Schwarzbein Principle Diet). While this version of the diet required counting carbs and protein, the authors later provided an.
The Medi-Weightloss program revolves around a high-protein diet with minimal carbohydrates, with no mention of how much fat you should be eating. The program states that it works to get you into a state of ketosis (in which your body burns fat for fuel instead of sugar), but getting and staying in ketosis is a finely tuned process and it’s not.A high-protein diet. Increasing your protein intake can lead to increased muscle mass and increased metabolism, as well as other benefits (we’ll get into those below).
What’s more, it’s not a.There is also evidence that short-term high-protein diets can place a strain on your kidneys by causing a buildup of acid, and may also cause kidney stones. Most studies of high-protein diets have not lasted longer than one year, so the long-term effects of consuming this type of diet are not well understood. The 3-day diet—also called the 3 day Military Diet or Military Diet for short—is an extremely calorie-restricted diet that limits intake to less than 1,000 calories per day. Hey jeff please make a video on weather if it is ok to consume raw whey,or you need to take digestive enzymes with it?
Can anyone please send me the real glycemic scale, I am having trouble finding it!
Instead of linking only the promo items, it’d help (& help your credibility as well) if you post(ed) links to scientific research articles, incl. your own, which you referenced…
No wonder i have pee a lot more even in the gym i had to stop exercise to go pee and i lost 5kilos in a week. With restricted carb and low calorie
Hi Dr Maggs, could you please dispel some conflicting information. I have been told by a dr friend that consumption of fat as the highest percentage of your diet does not make sense as the body will need to burn/consume this before it uses stored body fat. Therefore, those fat calories are competing and preventing weight loss. Another friend claims that the body uses the reserves first and that the calories ingested as fat are not converted into stored body fat if there is an excess. Which of these is correct? If it is the latter, how is this chemically possible? Love your videos. 😉
not convinced but doesnt change anything for me i fix my protein intake at 90 grams a day
What would you recommend for a feeling of weakness in the wrist and knees, lots of popping in wrist too. Been vegan over 5 years and train 3 or 4 days a week consistently. Love to do handstands and all that but sometimes my wrist bothers me too much, no sprain or breaks either.
currently lean bulking.
my workout-day calories: 2800kcal
my rest-day calories: 2400kcal
Height: 6.2 / 188cm
Weight: 184.5 Lbs
According to a complex DEXA I did in Moscow in the winter-break, I had 12.9 % fat and 6.9% on the INBODY-test (which of course is way off at times)
I have a SLIGHT bit of stubborn fat on the stomach from my weight loss I did in 2019 (83lbs) yet i’m doing abs 2times a week with some obliques aswell. Eating more carbs on workout days, less on restdays. 200-220g of protein every day.
Currently been lean bulking for 3 weeks and gained some weight. What would you recommend for me to do in order to get a crisp physique with great ab definition for the summer? My diet is completely clean. All macros in their place. It’s just that I have little to no ab definition yet the skin stretching through my obliques are tight. I’m suggesting myself to lean bulk until middle of May and then cut till July. Would you recommend this? I’ve seen a lot of results in the gym lately by progressive overload but really trying to maximize the best approach for my goal before July.
I trained without any supplement for over 5 years. Good results. Then I started taking a small amount of protein powder with milk twice a day, adding about 50 grams of protein a day about 3 months ago. I did notice a rather big difference. Body getting leaner, injury less often, recovery MUCH faster. I weigh 160lbs and I take about 80-110 grams of proteins depends on the food I consume other than the powder. I am content with this result and I will never, ever ramp up intake to what so called sports professionals suggest. Taking 1 gram per pound is just scarily unnatural. I doubt any race in any historical period had access to that much protein…
Sir please make videos on protein digestion i face lots of problem in digesting protien after trying many things like apple cider vinegar, high fiber diet water intake nothing seems to work
Do these gram per kilo recommendations apply to lean body mass or total body mass?
That’s really great….
I know high protein diet or high protein consumption do not affect on body, means our kidneys it will really helpful for womens also….
Thank u Sir… From India….
Hold on, did you say that a diet high in sugar doesn’t contribute to diabetes? I don’t think that is a myth.
Athletes need only 0.6 to 0.8 if not on colonic deficit and it’s agreed all around the world by dietions and sports and conditioning coach’s
To get too heavy unnatural muscle mass, need unnatural powders:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHZtvNxEx5s
2.2 grams per kilo? But does this also apply to a person that is overweight? I weigh 96 kilo and that would mean that I would eat 211 grams of protein a day! I now eat around 80-115 g/day and I would really struggle to eat much more than that! Isn’t there a limit when a person is overweight???? I mean..what about people that weigh even more than me? Shouldn’t I count on the weight I want to be instead? Like 68 kgx2.2=150 grams. That sounds more plausible to me? I really want feedback on this, thanks!
I might have missed it, but could you include a link to the studies next time?
Awesome video! Gonna watch it again. Just curious when you are on high protein, do you consider ever using powders like soy or pea, or you get enough just from the lentils, etc? Maybe I missed it, but what do you consider higher protein intake? Like I said, I have to watch it again, so much information in this video.:)
I recently started the Anabolic Diet, and you described the ‘purpose’ of getting the body into ketosis better than anyone online…ever. Thank you.
Could you make a video about diabetes in general? Not really related to myths nor bodybuilding, but it would be interesting.
Type 2 diabetes IS caused by to much insulin, which is caused by too much sugar….
Doc can we build as much as muscle with calorie deficit vs calorie surplus while taking same amount of protein?
I have fairly recently done a swing in my diet to lose a bit of stomachfat and lovehandles, I do try and stay away from carbs as much as possible but some carbs slips trough of course (but not much) how long time does it usually take before you start to see any changes? I know that everyone is diffrent but mainly an estimate. I have been eating like this now for 1 week. Thanks!
Great video.Anyone having high serum urea when going on high protein diet?
I think we need 10 grams per half a pound of bodyweight like what Rich Piana said
Dude I just discovered your channel. You and Jeff of athleanx are my fav now! Keep it up!
I was always generally tired. Flabby after eating, it would often make me dizzy. Now with this new diet, I’m fresh and less hungry. My life is now enriched and energized. My intelligence is now brighter and calmer. Thank you for your advice and whiteness, I am very grateful
I tried vegan and vegetarian and ended up with low thyroid and felt all fucked up. Went back to eating meat, problem solved. Never again.
I’m confused on why he keeps flipping between kilograms and grams.
For me, the desire to cut down the carbs came completely naturally once I realized that a sandwich as a snack makes me even more hungry before lunch than if I wouldn’t eat anything. Since then, I started to notice my body’s reactions to food high in carbs, and I am trying to avoid it, cause that hyperglycemia I used to get was really horrible.. The only thing that doesn’t have such a strong hyperglycemic effect on me, tho, is pasta, and I love pasta super much, so I am giving it a pass for now:)
I have been Intermittent Fasting for a couple of years typically on a 19:5 or 20:4 fast to feast ratio. I love the life style and It really makes a difference in my insulin levels. But with insulin resistance sometimes our insulin levels don’t always drop to the level that non-insulin resistant people’s level do during the fasting period. I have found through experimenting that incorporating a low carb plan in addition to my IF has been the key to a healthier life style and weight loss. Just found your channel and subbed right away.
high protein low carb is easier and ure not starving or obsessing over the calorie count!!
Really good explanation. I’m Naturopathic Medical Doctor licensed in Arizona, US. I’ve always considered insulin only when dealing with Diabetics. I never put it all together as you have done in this video. I will definitely pass this one.
Nice bro great video and I can relate lower protein but high carb helped me gain muscle and stay ripped but I got stuck at a certain point with increasing my muscle mass further until I switched to eat way more protein alongside the high carb vegan diet.
I really enjoy your videos and you make it easy to understand. I do need help!
I don’t consider myself big on carb but i do have sweet tooth. As i work as a cook the only 2 meals i control and keep healthy is breakfast and lunch and I either skip dinner or snak.
I always struggle with belly fat and am tired of it. Some days no matter how much I eat I still feel hungry:(
Please help!
Once you increase your protein you will notice your hair is thicker too.
This is my first week on Keto, I’m kind of worried about high cholesterol though!!
3m54s Sugar does play central causative role in the development of diabetes!
Just started a Low carb diet (0-20g of carbs per day) and intermittent fasting (16/8)
Great video. As an Apprentice Nurse Associate coming into the nursing profession it’s frustrating seeing so many people suffering from metabolic syndrome and getting inappropriate advice. I have heard that the Eat Well Plate might be reviewed soon. Do you have any more information on this? Thanks.
I agree that high carb is a spiral problem because the more carbs you eat the more you desire to eat. Very true. It also causes cravings that do not happen in the lo-carb environment. Great video and discussion of this subject. BUT lo-carb is one issue, but what restrictions should one place on the other macro-nutrients (fat & protein). I believe I have read that lo-carb PLUS calorie management is the best combo. But there is very little discussion once one embraces lo-carb (or KETO) on what the remainder of the diet should look like; some say eat all you want of fatty foods and others are less “over the top” on that issue. Where is truth? I KNOW that carbs cause insulin rushes that cause me to crash…but how much of the other two categories should I consume?
Thank you! You’ve mentioned hormones. It is said that different food increases estrogen and other increases testosteron. Would it be supportive for a man to concentrate on eating more food that increases testosteron if he wants to reduce his body fat (and doing exercises, of course)? Thanks.
I start Low Card 2 weeks ago so now i decided to no sugar for all 1 week so i can see how my body will burn fat in seek of sugar. i just start eating hi protein product, the first day i feel hunger all the time. do you have something to educate me in my journey in weight lose and new way of life.
I’ve heard that if you eat your fruits after your meal, you’re not going to get the vitamins, in fact its bad for you
Beautiful man, please do yourself and us a favor by getting your hair professionally cut. Then I could finally listen to the content.
Our closest relatives in the animal kingdom, primates consume minimal protein but eat mostly fruits and nuts.
That explains a lot! I started a low carb diet 2 days ago and noticed that I started peeing a lot. I was wondering what was going on. Lol. Thanks!
Hello Dr Maggs, i love your uploads and have subscribed to your channel. I’ve been on a low carb diet for 25 days and have shed 17.5lbs. My current weight was 15st 8.5lbs and now it’s 14st 5lbs (sorry but i’m old school). I am 49 years old and my height is 5ft 11inches. My BMI was bordering overweight to obese which scared me because i don’t want type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or risk of a stroke. I want to lose 50lbs for when i reach 50 years of age so it’s a 50 for 50. My target is 12st. By doing the low carb diet i cannot tell you how happy i feel, inside and out. Your information is priceless and anyone considering to lose weight should try your low carb diet. It REALLY WORKS, thank you so much!
Hi Dr Maggs! im from philippines and I really love your videos because its very informative and easy to understand about the keto diet thank you Dr Maggs!❤️
Jeff! Not doing MBM anymore? Was wondering how studies you’ve found show red light therapy effective?
I’ve been low carb eating for years to keep my weight in check as I get older. I like how you explain the process and decided to share this video on my Facebook timeline in hopes that some of my friends can start educating themselves about what their body is doing when they eat. I’ll probably binge watch a bunch of your videos lol. Thank you for making them.
And if i had kidney stones, could i consume whey protein without harm?
Dr. Maggs I’m learning soooo much from you about the KETO diet great content..Also you’re voice.. Sooooo sexy and Soothing!..
Say skeletal like you would Skeletor, the bad guy from He-man, not ske lee tal. Great info, though. love the channel.
No way a high protein diet can HELP the kidney maybe it doesn’t damage it if you’re healthy but help it no way
Been on a Low carb hi fat diet. Never felt better. I have lost 13 kgs in 3 months. Was not seriously overweight but needed to loose the flab around the tummy area. I go hard on organic butter, Cream, Cream cheese, Bacon with fat, Steak with fat. Veggies. Exercise regular. Drink lots of water. Not forgetting my drop of Whiskey with it. You are 100% correct dan now that I’ve been on this diet mission I am slowly starting to eat less, not crave junk foods and fast for much longer. Amazing journey thus far.Great vid keep em coming.
i did keto for a year.. 5 months lost 42 pounds,, 7 months lost nothing……. jan 2nd… started Carnivore.. hoping to get leaner
I don’t agree with what she says. The all or nothing approach isn’t very practical in either direction low fat or low carb. If your over Weight ultra low fat (<10% calories from fat, >80% from carbs) works best. That was how I lost 45lbs without dieting or counting calories or going hungry. But after about two years eating that way for some reason I stated to slowly gain the weight back (as in, 10lbs gained in a year). But I’m still very good weight wise. I got almost too thin eating ultra low fat, then I was having hormonal problems, lost menstration, heart arrhythmia. I have no clue what is causing those issues but upping my fat to a more balanced 60% carbs, 30% fat or so (I don’t worry about protein… it’s in everything I eat) I found my body feels much better. My weight gains have stopped and even gone back down a little. So I think it’s simply a matter of eating a Balanced diet, of whole natural unprocessed foods. Skip the soda, potato chips and Doritos and opt instead for brown rice with steamed vegetables, sautéed tofu topped with a cashew cream sauce.
This is great info, because in the nursing program I’m in, they STILL believe that high protein intake can possibly lead to kidney damage in HEALTHY adults with healthy kidneys.
Please do one about weight training for teens will stunt your growth
Look at those effing eyes! I noticed them in his video, “The Cavity Healing Diet.” // Yea, I had to google acro to see what he was talking about. It’s a type of yoga, yoga and acrobatics. // Okay, no more low-protein diet. // 186 lbs, 60 grams of protein a day seems to be the min.at 4 minutes. At 5 mins he’s up to 180 grams of protein a day. // Nice: 179 pounds. // BUT 180 grams of protein a day by eating nuts vegan powder protein and nuts???!!!
Myth Buster: Is the average guys who gyms 4-5 times a week required to consume 1.5 x body mass of protein (in grams) per days? e.g.: 70kg guy would need to consume 105g of protein per day, even when not working out…
I have really strong, gnawing hunger right before bed and I often eat some groats, barley or oats sometimes with peanut butter. I lose control at night. Why?
The key point is that high protein has an acid ash, and acidosis (even mild acidosis) does, other things being equal, increase loss of lean tissues including bone. See papers by Sebastian and others, pubmed. Acidosis also hurts the kidneys. All easily preventable by increasing veggie intake, or by taking bicarb, preferably potassium bicarb. And remember tomato paste: cheap, highly-concentrated, convenient alkaline veggies.
Thank you for this very informative video. i enjoy watching your videos.
Happy New Year everyone! Hope you have a nice relaxing day! Please let me know any common myths you’d like to hear me cover in a future episode (I’m taking notes)
I’ve just joined. I was concerned about my kidney. I’m on immune suppressants. This video is great. I only lose weight on protein diets.
adding wim hofs breathing exercise from time to time can balance that acidity imo
Ha you’re using fake weights. Good job fooling people frutarian boy.
Kudos for the video content! Excuse me for chiming in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you thought about Ponnordaz Impressive Remedy (should be on google have a look)? It is a smashing one of a kind product for discovering how to pack on solid muscle mass without the headache. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my buddy finally got great results with it.
I just subscribed!!! I just love you!! I love the way you fully explain everything!!!!
Just found your channel and I like your content! I noticed you haven’t uploaded in awhile.. are you planning on coming back? I’ll sub if you do:-) Thanx!
What about runners who enjoy 10k two or three time’s a week. Does keto work for us?
I think we should stop calling this a diet…. rather… A Way of Life..!!
How the heck do you get 170 grams of protein on a vegan calorie restricted diet? And without trashing the gut? Best regards from Sweden!
At 3:30 please don’t believe him. Extremely high protein diet can make your blood nitrogenous from excessive protein consumption. Kidney problems or not it’s never good to do damage to your kidneys. Although you only need 1/3 of a kidney to live, why hurt yourself? Many more people will watch this video than see this comment:( be safe.
Hey, I’m following this diet of having Food in 2hrs and fast for 22hrs. The only food I’ve been having is chicken (approximately 900g in 3days) and I’ve reduced around 6 kgs in the past 2 weeks with no exercise. I’m wondering if I’m doing anything wrong, if I am can you please correct me?
Are there other ways to do the intermittent fasting so I don’t have to skip breakfast?
I’ve been doing very well on a low carb/low calorie diet. I’ve heard that high insulin and high blood sugar causes fat storage (assuming you are not running a marathon). The plant based diet people claim that their high carb diet works fine as long as you have no fat or protein which might cause high insulin. I assume that high carb food always cause high blood sugar. Are their high carb plant foods that cause high blood sugar but don’t cause high insulin? No way am I going to try to find them.
great content.. found your channel from neoshred comment section.
Plus I played a plastic surgyn for a tummy tuck Lipo suction in 3 areas and every time I deal with that plastic surgyn I come out weighing 10 pounds more I went to him and paid him a lot of money for no reason to look worse then when I went in and to weigh 31 pounds more and I told the medical staff not to give me a blood transfusion or a sugar I v and the weight gain is always with an a few days after surgery and i never have lost it and I was told it’s sarcoma or swelling just so I could have another surgery to put drains in to gain another 10 pounds with each surgery I went in weighing 163 after all the surgeries 194 even Lipo suction diddent work for me not even a tummy tuck I spent a lot of money and got ripped off i diddent get what I paid for or asked for the surgyn just did what he wanted to and it is very cruel people can be very cruel they want the money but theybdont want to do the work you paid them for they just want to do what’s easy for them and less time consuming and be able to make it look like they are right and the patient is wrong
How can anyone take health/nutrition related science seriously when it seems every few years some new study comes out with completely opposite results to the previous findings? And worse, it often takes the health authorities years if not decades to update their guidelines and health advice, leading the masses to make poor health decisions in the process. This is why I base my diet around principles and tradition. If it worked for humans for thousands years, there’s no reason it should stop working now. Eggs, saturated fats, red meat, high protein diets, dairy…if any of this stuff was actually bad for us we wouldn’t have made it this far as a species.
Data to ‘suggest’ Helps to, may do, might do, etc etc….. hmmmmm Whatever works for you is always best, 1-1.2 g per lb bw nattys, 1.5 + for juiced up lifters is a good starting point i feel
Just love your videos. Hope you don’t mind me sharing them with my pay it forward group for weight loss
Jeff: You are naive. Start using your own brain instead of relying exclusively on all these so called scientific studies. Protein requires a lot more effort to process than carbohydrate or fat by the body. The difference is splitting that Nitrogen molecule off and removing the excess nitrogen that forms amonia. This is why excess proteinproductive in terms of diet and aging. You are still young. Very young. Look at most of the older body builders. They don’t age very much better than the non bodybuilders. The excess protein ages the body. Especially animal protein. Do yourself a favor and watch the movie “forks over knives”. It will explain some things you haven’t heard before.
Hey this is and from trinidad.which is the best protein should i consume.
Are protein supplements bad with individuals having high sugar in blood?
There are many contradictory studies, many conclude that, simply put, extra protein puts you in a higher risk of kidney failure due to the extra work they do to filter out excess/un-needed protein.
It makes sense, as like anything, if something is overworked it fails faster. I don’t know what to believe anymore, every finding has its contradiction… Nice content though
So easy to understand. I have always struggled with dieting since I was a child and have remained overweight all my life. I am on the first month of low carb. I liked your comment in another video when you said it is a marathon not a race so the occasional lapse is ok and it appears to be manageable in that I can return to low carb without the feeling of dread of returning to a diet. Thank you
Really appreciate the video, in a similar situation, or about to be, so great information to know.
im so confused after watching all kinds of videos saying to lose weight but all of them say different like someone says eat low carbs diet, someone says eat high fat high protein diet, some videos says that i should starve. im endomorphic with a height of 170 cm and weight 230 lbs. i need to lose at least 8 stones of weight, im 22 years old and a vegan. plz plz help me.
Great review on protein and kidney/bone let’s not mislead viewers into thinking high protein is ‘safe’ from side effects. There’s a trade off here: high protein’s side effect is less longevity. You can’t have it all!
I have tried regular calorie restricted diets and they simply don’t work for me. They leave me hungary, with the majority of weight loss being muscle mass.
20th day on Keto and I’m feeling great and looking leaner. I also feel satiated between meals.
They work because it is “33 to nill”. Great video and I love your explanation why the carb deficit theory is really bunked. I really think it has to do with more hormonal and insulin. I know one person who ate a fruit and veggie. He lost some weight but was so miserable because he had no fat.
Well, i do believe protein has more pros then cons.. but if it does increase calcium absorption, and leads to a higher excretion of said calcium through the urinary system. Stands to reason that it puts you at a higher risk of developing kidney stones, which can be pretty damaging to the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra.
Hi! I am 46 years old, and I have been overweight my whole life. I have read Dr. Atkin’s book and tried Atkins several times. I felt great on it, except it gave me prolonged diahhrea. That is the biggest reason I did not stick with it. I did love the fact that my cravings disappeared, and I was never really hungry. I am a Weight Watchers failure. I really like the MyFitnessPal website. Bottom line is, I am totally confused about nutrition. I need to lose at least 100 lbs. and I want to do it right. There are soooo many conflicting dogmas out there. It’s the Vegans vs. the Paleo people, the LCHF people vs. Weight Watchers…..so how am I going to do this? I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes a little over a year ago and take Metformin. I want to get my fasting blood sugar down below 90 and my A1C below 7. So what do you think I should do?
Thank you for the clear concise information. Knowledge is power but only when you use it. I’m using your advice to control my mind and exert my will power in overcoming cravings. I dont give in now. I’ve lost in the last four years 24 inches off my waist, seriously! Train in martial arts run miles every week go to the gym and I’m so full of energy I feel like I’m going to burst. No desire to eat carbs, sugar eat. Mental clarity is through the roof. I’m 57 and lots of friends are starting to drop with many health problems and heart attacks. I’m so healthy I don’t even have dandruff.
First of all, great video, although you mention a con about protein being expensive. I disagree with that. Coming from meat, protein is expensive, but plant based foods and grains that actually have protein in them are incredibly cheap. They also come without the saturated fat ♂️. I’m currently studying exercise and sports science. Great video, once again
Learning so much from your vlogs. Great info concerning Atkins vs. South Beach. On my Phentermine program, I’m allowed one strachy carbs (bread/cereal/rice etc) one portion with every meal. Not that I don’t adore carbs, but 3 times a day seems a lot to me. I would try either Atkins or South Beach diet in replace of my meal plan, if I’ll see quicker results. If a patient is on Phentermine 37.5 mg, which diet plan do you suggest? Atkins or South Beach? Thx:)
All ketones in your urine tell you is that you’re urinating ketones. A better indication of being in ketosis is to use a glucometer.
Thank you very much Doctor. I will reduce my carb intakes and eat more protein-rich food and veggies.
Doctor. Are there any side effects of this life style? i am a bit worried after i googled it fining some horrible precautions. E.g. the constant presence of keytone in the urine??
You can prove anything with such short term studies. How about long term data? What was your n population? How about everyday lifters?
Would be a little more easy to trust everything he’s saying, if he had also stated some of the negative side effects to a high protein diet, even if the effect was small.
Do you use protein powder? I have gone vegetarian now so i am using hemp protein at moment. Do you recommend any websites/books to read for health/fitness? I want to lose a bit of fat whilst gaining muscle and also help strengthen my joints/bones as i am clicking alot, my back feels the worst.
Great info! Turn down the decibels on the music, please!!!!
I just found your videos and I love them!! Thank you for sharing!
So if I eat 600g of protein a day, there are no bad side effects?
What about High Fat Low Carb, like the Keto diet? WOul Keto work better than Stillman’s or Dukan for weight loss?
I am surrounded by guys who think that running will “run away your gains”. I don’t think that’s true, because I’m a marathon runner and I lift weights, and I haven’t seen any muscle loss. Can you myth bust that? Looool. It’s a frustrating debate!
I work at a hospital and hear all the time about people who are admitted to hospital because their kidneys are damaged by a high protein intak over a longer period of time. How is this a myth then?
Someone should study a high protein diet on regular folks vs. those who strength train. It could be like vitamin c, your could body can use more when you need it.
my question is Do you recomend drinking cofe:With respect to glucose raise???
Listening to you is so calming. It gives me affirmation that my lifestyle is on the right path. Thank you.
I like Jeff’s videos before I’ve even watched them because they are full of brilliant info
First video I’ve watched about this approach. Very well explained. I’m going to try it!
Protein is more satiating than carbs and fat which is one of the reasons this works so well, however, protein does turn on insulin production too, even if to a lesser extent than carbs. The only thing that doesn’t have a noticeable effect on insulin is fat. What this means is that too much protein can kick you out of ketosis.
The reason the Atkins diet or low carb diets work is because you end up eating less calories
I want to thank you DOCTOR for taking the TIME to educate me and so many others……………..
What up Dr. Swole! Thanks for this super informative video! keep up the great content! (:
Hi there, this is my personal problem.
Every time when i having high protein intake, my pee will form lots of bubble in the bowl, is this the phenomenal of too much calcium in my urine?
Can anyone help answer?
There is NO other diet that has ever worked for me. I have shed off over 65 pounds within just 5 months. The best part is protein makes you feel full whereas the damn carbs no matter how much you eat you are hungry the next hour. I am a pre-med and I have studied Biochemistry thoroughly, gaining the knowledge of how your metabolism’s pathways work prompted me to start this diet and look at that the Doctor in this video seems to agree with me yay!:D Just remember NO CARBS, no joke, do you want to consume carbs? Do you feel low in sugar? Eat a banana or an apple do not consume high carb diets such as bread, pasta, rice or potato. Also, try to restrict your fat intake as well so preferably, at the end of the day you prefer to burn your own fat, so choose lean meats such as chicken and fish, and DO not fry anything! Grill your meat and steam your vegetables with chicken broth. My personal best meal was protein shake, didn’t have to cook it, was ready in a minute and I could have as much as like, 2 scoops of protein shake for less than 300 calories provides you with over 50 grams of protein! Try this and then tell me that you are not full! Likewise, egg whites worked just as good. Good luck guys and remember to exercise! You want to maintain those muscles!
Inuits reportedly have terrible osteoporosis, which is not rebutted by this video. And kidney function is worse, due to inflammation, caused by high protein intake. Reconciling this video with Dr. Greger’s vegan arguments is not possible. I remain flummoxed by the vegan vs. protein debate.
Could you do a video on the effectiveness of whey protein? Including the soy lecithin content and additives
The fact she had a justice league poster in her office, I knew I could trust her!
Doesn’t too much protein cause insulin spike? I thought it was supposed to be high fat, moderate protein and low carb?
The thing is, Dr Atkins died of a heart attack. Proteins are mostly from animals. Animals in the USA are full of antibiotics and steroids. I followed this diet and took metformin and nothing happened. I switched to going Vegan and only took vitamin d and b12 and stopped metformin and lost weight, mild acne cleared, and i eat all the pasta and bread that i want. I think vegan is the way to go.
High protien is hard on the liver,u have to eat large amounts of vegetables or salads to clear your liver.
Raw vegan protein source: chickpeas soaked in a fridge for 24-72 hours. Please check https://www.facebook.com/RogerHaeske.
Great content as always Jeff. Could you please do Protein cycling for your next bust
This really resonates with me. Slipped up and had carbs yesterday now I’m starving. Iv just had some ACV and lemon and will fast today using sparkling water to keep my hunger at bay. Definitely addicted to sugar. Thanks for the video
Common myths:
Working out will bring you back pain
Eggs will bring you adverse blood lipid levels
All these whey supplements will destroy your organs
Meat is bad
Fat is bad
Dairy is bad
Sugar is ok
You have to train with short rest intervals or you will never get results
What the hell is volume?
One more myth: medium protien high carb low fat diet for bulking is bad?
Please create physcology vid too
why is everyone saying that low carb diet is hard? i just eat chicken breast, tuna and eggs. you will fill full and wont lose any muscle while losing weight.
Thank you! I have a lot of naturL muscle but as soon as I went raw vegan I got soft and couldn’t drop the fat as easily. I think a lot has to do with carbs holding in to more water also…. but if you really want to get leaner and be a better athlete I’m begining to think higher protien is a must. Thanks for affirming my gut instinct now I just need to down that plant based protien… Sometimes that’s not fun
When I eat high protein diet my lower right side. Everytime I eat high lvls of proteins this pains. So yea, high proteins can f u up. Maybe its best to eat balanced diet.
100% of volume of my tv and pc audio card and still can hear her, get a better mic please!
Lol so you “myth-busted” those propositions with only 3-4 studies to back you up? As to the protein causes kidney damage you only relied on ONE study! It’s easy to set up with what you want to believe and what it’s convenient for you to believe.
Just wondering how much protein a moderately to very active woman needs per day. Would you consider 140-150 too much?
Doc, is it net carbs or total carbs that you are talking about? Thanks
Anything sweet according to my roommate is Diabetes. Please go into Diabetes!
I have so many health issues. I have been working on low carb because of my diabetes and other chronic illnesses but worried about high sodium when eating high protein.
Hey Jeff, thanks for the vid!:) I did not get the Diabetis comparision tho, in my understanding a high intake of sugar over a long amount of time does actually cause diabetis? Thanks for your answer!
Good video!! How many grams of carbs is considered low carb..diet.?.
Looking good brother! Some valuable points on protein intake too.
Hey Jeff, love your work. Milk seems to be coming up a lot recently is safe to consume with the hormones? Can we actually absorb estrogen through digestion? Is it a good supplement while body building if we take into account the macros?
Hi, what is a good macro ratio I should follow? I’m thinking about doing 40% protein, 30% fat, and 30% carbs. Does that sound good? I’m setting up my ratios in my fitness pal. I’d like to lose 25 pounds.
I just watched a Netflix show called “down to earth”, and there is a vegan superfood guru guy traveling to “blue zones” (areas in the world with the most centennials). One of their talking points was that these centennials had a low protein intake, and that protein basically accelerates “aging pathways” and all chronic illness. I thought this was probably very biased. I have noticed a lot of health documentaries really demonizing dairy and other animal proteins these days.
I loved finding out that you had a video on this subject. I feel better now that you are saying its safe!
Hi! I’ve watched all of your vlogs and they have helped my family tremendously!
I started Duromine 3 weeks ago and started eating LCHF yesterday morning. So far I’ve lost 6.1 kg, I was 115kg.
A question though, I have read a lot regarding LCHF and I fully trust and believe it works, but for some reason I still feel really bad when I eat the suggested food. It’s as if my minds telling me NO but I dropped 1.8kg since yesterday morning, so I know it’s beginning to work. Is this normal? Will I eventually feel comfortable eating all this bacon and cream and eggs and coconut oil? I still eat lots of leafy greens and lean proteins but I still feel “guilty”.
Fuck rigged science
People don’t eat enough protein
That is why everyone is so frail and ages like shit
Dukan diet is probably the safest out of all the high protein diets
My creatinine levels increased since I have been eating high volume of protein. How can you explain that?
Carbs dont make you fat. Pretty much every athlete on the planet eats high carb diets. If you eat high protein and no carbs and you get into ketosis your body is going to produce glycogen through Gluconeogensis and its going to take muscle from your body. Keto is stupid af
I stick to a low carb diet for 6 days out of 7, but every weekend, when we visit friends, we have a bad night on junk carbs(pizza. chinese, indian, nibbles etc). Any harm in this or does it destroy all the ‘good efforts’ put in over the rest of the week? My weight is coming down(albeit slowly 1lb/week)
What about someone with cholesterol problems? LDL to high… Wouldn’t high protein affect that negatively?
Definitely would like to see that video on sugar intake and the onset of diabetes
this is VERY misleading.
and you hear him say “WE” did a study blah blah…
HIS studies do NOT correspond with the NIH,
which shows high protein DOES effect kidneys and create bone loss.
are HIS studies Peer-Reviewed? replicated?
the body doesnt need protein.
none, zero, zilch.
it needs amino acids.
Amino’s are abundant in plant foods, and easily absorbed.
unlike meat/dairy which creates toxins
the body will even re-use aminos if it thinks it is low.
ever hear of Kwashiorkor?
No?
its because no one ever has it in developed countries.
Kwashiorkor is the sickness which occurs from not enough protein.
when you get more protein than you need, it becomes a toxin.
something the body has to deal with in a negative way.
a high protein diet is simply stupid.
even body builders.
google “Scott Jurek”, vegan ultramarathon runner.
You should go to Woo&Pep if you’d like to make diet better guys.
can i use chicken tenders to get more protein….. i cant find a protein shake that doesnt have any fake sugars in them
If Glucagon raises glucose in the body how will that effect someone with diabetes type 2 like me? Can you show us different meal plans for certain calories. On mfp it says I should have 2,160 to lose 1 lb a week. Such as 1300, 1500, 1800, 2000. Also a full day of food on each plan. I know I’m asking a lot lol.
Very concise summary. I like the way you keep it simple and mention the transitory effects of keto, such as water loss, as the body becomes fat adapted. I wish I had a $ for every time someone told me they tried keto, but it made them feel bad…
Listen for all u dumbasses. low carb diet and high protein is good but once you get results then u go to a bit less amount of protein with moderate carbs. You go about it periodically. Its called maintenance level then u switch again low carb. That way u become a healthier person cause u dont restrict your fiber for the rest of your life. Going Vegan one whole month or two a year aint a bad thing either. I incorporate everything. Not this diet is better than that and blablalba. Also the high fat diet keto i do not recommend at all and i know some of u got results on that yes but the problem is too much fat burdens the liver u need a lot more greens when on a keto. So to make my life easier i avoid it. Also along side with the diets i combine them with intermittent fasting and even a 24 hour fast once a month. Thats how u do things. So meat lovers to have to deprive forever and carb lovers dont have to deprive there maple syrup forever. Pray and hopefully you live past 80. Thats it thats all.
Doesn’t insulin also build muscle? How to build muscle without carbs?
Can you do something about how to meal prep with details because I can’t find anything on this subject
Theres no way I can get 190 grams of protein a day…i probably get 120-130 on my best day and i feel like a pig….I’m trying to stay around maintenance and recomp
Just started my keto journey so really helpful thanks for the explanation
People are telling people about keto and Atkins diet and it doesent work for everyone
I’m 134lbs and I eat 275g of protein, I haven’t seen anything that’s negative for a long time
Type 2 diabetes is caused by insulin resistance, which yes, is usually caused by taking in more carbs than a person needs, either simple or complex. It all gets broken down into glucose in the body.
I will try intermittent fasting. Your definition of intermittent fasting has made it easier for me to understand what its all about because I have been struggling to lose belly fat though I am thin. Know that a thin person with belly fat looks weird.
High FAT, not high protein! If you try to eat more than 30% calories from protein you will die. Even Atkins recommends high fat. Are you really a doctor?
Hey Jeff so I consume 300 grams of chicken liver everyday as it is a really cheap protein source here in India and also for vitamins and minerals can you cover a video on toxicity due to consuming too much liver please
how does more calcium absorbed from blood lead to more of the ingested calcium excreted?? doesnt make any sense at all.
These studies are useless because they are only going up to a year or two years. They should do at least 20 years
Dr. Kathleen, Is ketonacidosis dangerous for your health? I have read things that say this is bad but I also thought that losing weight causes ketonacidosis as a by product of breaking down fat and muscle.
Great video content! Sorry for the intrusion, I would love your thoughts. Have you ever tried Dinanlinson Elegant Figure Approach (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for uncovering the secrets behind a highly effective low carb diet without the hard work. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my cousin after a lifetime of fighting got astronomical results with it.
Jeff your video is bullshit. It’s animal protein that is dangerous, not protein in general. Animal products fuck the body up, including acidosis and decreased bone density.
It’s kind of sad that he’s not aware that his physique is super-undeveloped because he was already very undeveloped in a common diet.
How irresponsible you are giving this false info. You manipulate all!!! Sorry for the people that trust you… You need to have the knowledge, criteria & discernment to analyse what you read, your source, etc. Who sponsors you???
So difficult to trust any research, always there is an economic interest behind.
High fat, low carb is the in thing today. But high protein, low carb makes more sense to me. How many carbs?
i come from a similar background as you
i was diagnosed 15 years ago with severe Crohns/Colitis
since going Vegan 6 years ago i kept a very close eye on the way i felt
I am positive once you have Colitis or Crohns or even IBS your absorption rate goes way down
I started at a 80/10/10 and by the time through slow adjustments i ended up at a 60/20/20 eating around 2000 cals,i could feel the full benefit of being vegan
lean body with good Muscle tone great skin and healthy Hair..the way it should be in my opinion
high protein diets are a slow killer. Metabolites of protein fermentation by gut microbes are nasty and in some case carcinogen.
This lady is right. I’m 10 days into high protein and next to no carbs and I have lost weight and I feel much better than I did before starting.
100% agree with the low protein…plus I don’t think its healthy. Just wondering if you ever tried or if its even possible a keto-vegan diet?
I thank god everyday for you and your vids. PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON HOW MUCH PROTEIN YOU SHOULD EAT IN A DAY!!!! Also, a video on vegan protein sources vs animal protein sources would be interesting.
The scary thing is I have had MDs telling me these myths. I later figured out that doctors are not required to study new research (to some extent of course). I don’t like the thought of a doctor not studying new research for 30 years.
how much calories in averge do you comsume per day, and how much of precent of it is comes off protein?
Watch Down to earth, with Zac Efron, netflix. Researchers found out that the longest living people on earth, all reach high age, with Low protein diet. I think that’s a proof that high protein is just not healthy. Maybe even dangerous for top sporters.
Processed carbs and sugar are poisonous to the body, period. They are NOT natural foods.
My computer research has shown that nothing beats this diet plan. ”sowo hope site” google it if you don’t believe me. You may drop weight like I did which has been 13 lbs already.
Will I gain a lot of weight if I change my diet from high protein diet to more ‘normal diet'(like lower the protein intake to a normal amount and more carbohydrate intake)?

Ya right, check that wit so called Dr Shawn baker who follows your advice. He could tell you thing or two how wrong you are!He has a blood work to prove it!
The human body naturally regulates protein and fat, but not refined carbohydrates.
Wether they are good or bad carbs. In addition the human body takes about twelve hours to process sugar. So if you are eating a high carb diet especially refined carbs, it has a stacking effect…you will see weight gain.
Because your body still has insulin in your blood and then we are adding more. That’s one reason intermittent fasting is so effective is
It get insulin levels down before you start
The stacking effect of sugar as a primary fuel source.
You’re failing to make the distinction between animal and plant protein. Phosphorus is buffered by calcium and that’s where the loss of calcium from the bones come from. Just as plant and animal saturated fats are completely different from one another and have different effects on your body. Plant protein/fat obviously being the better/healthier choice.
Just for reference I’ve dieted and bulked on around 60 to a 100 grams protein a day if your training and sleeping properly you really don’t need a lot.
Perfect video, thank you very much, i’ve been watching videos about this sort of diet for years, and nobody explained it as clearly as you did in your video, subscribed!
Too often, when my friends see the supplements I take, they without any consideration just blurt out “this is bad for you you are going to destroy your liver”.
Hi Andrew really appreciate the video’s mate, can you do a what I eat in a day video, i’m interested in some of the high protein meals you are eating. Cheers
Following a good friend of mine used this diet program “sowo hope site” (Google it) to reduce 15 pounds, I actually learned a lot about it. Consequently of course I read directly into detail about it on google.
Protein is important but if you take more then you need is just throwing money away…this numbers he’s giving us does not relate to everyone…
Watched two videos and subbed. Good science and research, good presentation. Love what you’re doing man!
There are many terrible deductions in this video I can’t I can’t nonscience people that want to get views
Good advice. It works, I’m 59 and have a 32 inch waist. I do interval sprints on a treadmill a couple days a week and I also try to eat all my food between 11 am and 8 pm. This also helps keep my insulin levels low for as long as possible.. Thanks
Doctor I have downloaded the my pal app! And told me to go on 1200 calories which i have done for two weeks. Lost about 1.5 the first and this week have lost only half pond!! Should I add more calories or take off some??? I am 5″3 and weight 145 right now. Thanks in advance.
hey doc 2.2g per kilo =almost 5g per lps….1g per lps =0.4g per kilo
Daily protein requirement video for lifters and non lifters would be good. Great vid by way.
Is it okay to slowly stop eating carbs? I always feel sick if I just give them up.
What about an enhanced athlete? Considering protein synthesis appears amplified for those using anabolic steroids?
You can eat loads of carbs and lose weight it’s all about one thing to make sure the calories intake is less than the output needed. Best to make sure the difference is small not huge. You want to lose about 1lb or 2lb a week.
High Protein diets won’t put you into Ketosis. Protein will cause am insulin spike (not as much as carbs, but will still spike) and become glycogen, which stops ketosis. You also have to lower your protein content as well and increase your fat.
Is she your girl friend as well or just training performing friend?
I tried so many diets, my parents even dared to recommended me to starve and eat the less calories I could, then I started the high protein low carb diet and I lost fat and gained a good amount of muscle mass. I feel good, I don’t eat bread or pasta anymore but only vegetables and fruits as carbs and I feel good and don’t need other sources of carbs, i only need fats and protein, they are so underrated. I workout twice a day and I don’t feel drained.
Any references of the studies mentioned by Dr Jose Antonio? Any follows up of the studies? Only few study doesn’t mean anything. It is not science, it is just hypothesis. What about gluconeogenesis?
Hi Andrew, how do you manage to get 170gr of vegan protein a day? Do you use any protein powder? Take care and thanks so much for your videos
What would happen if I do strength training with low protein?
so what macro split do you (or the studies) recommend? Could you make a what I eat in a day?
Wow! Amazing results.
So in summary, the key is plant protein and exercise.
Have you considered intermittent fasting and human growth hormone? Working out at the end of the daily fast, before eating…
hi im self claimed doctorate who advises eating ass helps with gut flora
cheers
i’ve been eating 5.4g of protein per 1kg of my weight for around 2 months by now (eating mostly chicken livers) and i feel fine
Dr I want to discuss something with you rather I’m wrong or right but I’m really suffering because about 2 years ago I weighed 125 I never had a weight problem my whole life then 2 years ago I start putting on weight I now weigh 194 at 5 ft 3 I’ve been on the low carbohydrate diet of 20 carbohydrates or less for years now and it isent working for me it may be that people are in charge of who gets to lose weight and live a good life and see in the mirror and on the scale and who cannot it has to be that way because I really starve myself don’t go over 20 carbohydrates and I am not losing weight I’m gaining and it has to be people who are in charge of this they are probably even in charge of what some people see and feel and what life they live in the bible god talks about how they’re are people who have advanced over the rest of the world and how in the last days there will be critical hard to deal with times people can be very powerful and wicked causing other humans to suffer in the bible god talks about man has dominated man to his own harm ruin so god explains that it is not him who is responsible for human suffering it is man who dominated man to his own harm ruin and Saton the devil they are not God’s children they wish to do the work of they’re father saton the devil who is a liar and the father of the lie it is probably cruel people so they get they’re way all the time very selfish greedy people who don’t care about how humans feel or nothing they would rather be mean and cruel to people causing them to suffer inside so bad it’s a real strong hatred some people have and they are not happy until they completely destroy peoples life some people all they’re life till they die that’s how I feel about what people have done to me and it’s been so long now that it has been the majority of my life and I think that I’m hated so bad that things are going to be this way for me possibly worse it looks like the situation is getting worse and it will probably continue till I die
Huh? For ketosis you need to be eating high fat moderate protien low carb. High protien kicks you out of ketosis.. and excess protien breaks down into glucose!
Good video. I follow the 1g per pound of body weight formula but often go over my target. I usually focus on hitting my fat target for the day so I don’t sweat a protein overage. Glad to know I’m not at any Kidney risk.
Love your videos man! Definitely will be needing to up my protein intake. My only advice would be to use your hand motions in pitch with the syllables in your sentence and to figure out a way to blink less.
Hi! I’ve been on Scarsdale diet since january and I lost 12 kilos (6 pounds). I know I should had lost more but I had a lot of attemps to do the diet during the year and I failed, so I actually did it well just 3 times. Great video and very good explanation! Greetings from Argentina
Does it really not matter to you that all the studies are funded by the dairy and egg industry?!
Its so hard for me to increase protein intake on a vegan diet without using protein powders or eating way too many calories. Any advice??
People restrict themselves too much: bad for one’s sanity. I only really restrict time of eating and basically that means omad for me. There is absolutely no way I would go vegan on an Omad diet. I try to think what cave people did… one meal if that was probably all they could afford to do, and then there were feast and famine periods. I also recall that the amount of essential carbohydrates is ZERO. I love being able to sample different proteins and have also developed a huge desire for big green leafy salads.
Intermittent fasting. Eat enough shorten your eating time window. Get lean and gain muscle. I am 44 and I am at 5% body fat and very muscular check my Instagram @dixonizm
Whey protein shakes gave me kidney stones. No preexisting condition. Stopped taking them, no more problems.
i love the carb restriction but I seems to put on weight with starchy veggies Can you do a segment on starchy veggies
Thank you for sharing. I definitely had results like the latter with adequate/high protein.
Omgoodness that looks so dangerous i don’t think i took a breath
PhD in sales! Looking at his body language it is clear he is aware he is telling loads of bollocks!!!!
I like the way you present your information…clear and knowledge dense! Thanks!
Before I used to get hungry at around 11:00am if I take breakfast also with 3 meals a day pattern and snacks in evening. I m doing intermittent fasting for few days. I still eat lunch with rice and in evening I only take fat and proteinat around 7pm.I don’t feel hungry till 12-1:00pm next day and that also without help of bullet proof coffee. And I lost around 2kg in one month. I don’t want do vigorously so taking time to do full low carbohydrates as rice is our staple diet.
what would be a good ratio for carbs / protein? like right now Ive been eating over 150g of carbs and over 100g of protein.

Hey Dr. Swole, i’ve been struggling with fat loss for the past few months. I just can’t seem to get rid of it, no matter how clean I eat, how hard I train and how much of a deficit i’m in. How do I build an effective cut to get leaner?
Tofu, tempeh, edamame beans and lentils will SAVE your vegan gains Great job debunking the low protein myth Andrew
Love your videos thank you,you are an inspiration for healthy eating,I am following you low carb ones
Hi! I’m Jessica.I did -15 lbs in 30 days.More here hddiet.gs\#zKFC
