Sphinx is a good place to learn how to draw your chest through your shoulders, an action that will come in handy in many other poses (like cobra and upward facing dog) and is great for heart opening. last week got the best of me and I didn’t keep up with each day for the July Shift challenge. I was feeling a little bummed and defeated, thinking maybe I can binge today to catch up. This practice really spoke to me. Adrienne’s reflection on how we live in the pose, as apposed to how we get into the pose, struck an emotional chord within me. As we entered into the first low lunge asana, Adriene’s words prompted me to reflect upon the memories of lost friends and loved-ones, as well as vanquished threats, none of whom will ever be able to enjoy the experience of drawing breath or feeling alive within their own bodies…As we continued with the low lunge, I found myself whispering, “I am alive” out loud. There is strength in femininity, as alluded to by Adriene, and I agree. Softness does not always equate to “weakness”. Some of the most important lessons in my life were taught to me by women who were simultaneously very feminine, yet incredibly strong. I acknowledge and render respect to the (often) unacknowledged strength that women possess. I’m humbled by Adriene each day that I practice with her, and consider myself a better man for it. Likewise, I’ve always felt that yoga IS a sensual practice in that, we get to explore our “inner sense” and reconnect with the life-affirming experience of breathing.

Today first day for me. Compared to me you are so super flexible. Already in the first exercise I am not able to put the hands behind without bending my elbows. They arrive only above my head. But I will not give up.

I have some weird swelling in my neck and shoulders, after ruling out anything more serious, (infection, thyroid, or mass) with my PCP, I went to my chiropractor who helped me understand the effect of tense muscles, poor posture and bra support. Im going to try and do this video routinely to see if it helps me relieve my swelling by loosening the muscles and opening the chest to improve drainage. Thank you again!

I am brand new to yoga… As in this video is the very first time I’ve ever even seen yoga be performed! I have struggled with ADHD & anxiety my entire life so the mere thought of yoga & meditation sent my heart racing. A month ago I started meditating & last week I started working on my chakras. Today I hit a wall with my heart chakra & decided to do a google search of ideas to help. Never anticipating watching a video, especially a yoga video, I wound up here. I thought I would just watch for a minute then lose focus (how could I possible watch this for 24 minutes) but without my brain directing, my body started participating! AND I LIKED IT!! My heart chakra was so messed up that I had to create a bath bomb that would help fix it before I was able to do ANY yoga or exercise that focused on it.
I could do the moves. In fact, I could do more extreme versions of them, in regular practices, but when I thought about my heart chakra ir brought me pain.

I have a question. When my neck starts kicking in, I pause and hold the movement until I fail rather than making my neck do more work. Should I just keep working both my back and neck? Or protect my neck and do my best to only work my back, even if I get fewer reps done?
That’s the kind of practice that I needed, some of the moves were intense but I liked it specially the new moves

Second day doing this routine. The first day I could feel one spinal disc and a muscle in the front of my right bicep giving complaint, but today, almost nothing. Just regular muscle stretch aches. Still not relaxing, but the easing of tension in any amount is good.

This practice was very powerful for me, when we transitioned into downward facing dog and she said “let something out” I UGLY cried for about 5 minutes out of nowhere , but in the end of those 5 minutes i felt the biggest smile on my face! I am amazed. The right side of my neck and the area under my right shoulder blade has been in pain for 3 years. I’ve seen multiple doctors, done MRIs, X-rays, physiotherapy, arthroposophic therapy, regular ol’ therapy, massages, and what have you to treat it. I’ve never felt as pain free as I do in this instant, after this practice in Shift. Thank you so much, Adriene.

Good morning Adrienne I just read your lovely letter this morning and I decided to do this practice yesterday after I did Dedicate space practice and the moon practise. Something made me feel like I wanted to do something for someone and my little sister had been cooped up indoors due to cv-19 and it’s her birthday next month. I drew her a picture of a fairy garden she is only 9. I spent over 5 hours through the day on it and it felt like it truely came from my heart.

Hi Sarah! I need your guidance I face problems with forward fold poses. My spine, shoulder blades and lower back pain a lot during these poses. But I have no problem with backward bend poses like mermaid pose, one legged king pigeon pose, cobra pose. But i face problem during forward fold, I feel pain even while i try to pick-up something off the floor. May be I am not flexible enough for forward folds. If so, then please suggest me some tips.

My shoulders, neck, and upper back have chronic, reoccuring pain from so much time hunched forward. At my computer, reading books, lifting boxes, cleaning my home… It seems like everything puts strain in that area!
Every time my muscles are tense and knotted up, I come back to this video and make this class part of my daily routine. You have so many good sessions!

This yoga is great for shoulders, but I have difficulties with my feet while doing it. Any suggestion?
I have suffered from neck and shoulder pain, for forever they often get trapped and limit my movement (not to mention it hurts)! I’ve been seeing a chiropractor for the last year, who cracks the hell out of my neck and back. I managed to trap my neck at the start of lockdown and obviously, couldn’t see my Chiro so I have been trying everything I can to ease the pain and try and release them.
I googled flexibility for neck and shoulders and found this video I don’t believe in “miracle cures” but I did the exercises in the video once and it completely untrapped my back. I have been doing it every day for about two weeks and I’ve never been so pain free and had such a range of motion so I urge you to do it if you sit at a desk, hunch up when you run and/or suffer from a tight neck and back.

My right shoulder is sore most of the time and I’m really taking this time at home to stretch and strengthen I’m on day 10 of adding this at the beginning of my regular yoga I have hardly any pain and can tell I’m getting more flexible. My goal is to do cow face arms on both sides as I’m only able to do it on one right now. Thanks for the motivation!
I’m doing this in 2020! I have a really tight chest and shoulders. I’m only 5 days in and now my hands are slightly touching each other during cow face arms; before, they were approx 20cm apart. My shoulders could lay flat when I lie down as well, which I couldn’t before. I’m going to keep doing this!

I’ve been doing this every day for a week now. This has really helped my shoulders and seems to be helping with an old rotator cuff injury that has been feeling stiff. I’ll keep going for another two weeks as suggested to see what happens next.

Hey, I know this is an old video but Casey if you can let me know if in the ‘heart beat’ your back is angled back so you are in a v with your legs and back but obviously spin straight when you did this or is your back straight up and down like a lamp post? Thanks amazing workouts thank you. My terrible lower back pain gets better and better with each video i try!
I hope this helps my torn rotator cuffs. My shoulders hurt so much but trying to avoid replacement surgery. I’ll try this tomorrow. thanks

This was great, been searching for “ways to get taller during puberty” for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about Genevi Sonadelyn Eradicator (search on google )? Ive heard some decent things about it and my buddy got cool results with it.

Delicious practice yet again. The bind through several postures gently opens the chest,the transitions are smooth,music subtle but so right. The cueing & instruction is so good I rarely need to look at the screen. This is vinyasa at its flowing best.Lovelovelove:)

Hi Adriene, thank you so much for this beautiful practice. I am a beginner and I am having a little difficulty with my breathing. I feel a little discomfort and minimal pain on my lower ribcage as I inhale. I didn’t feel this during the child’s pose and the final resting posture though. Please advise what I can implement or be mindful of for a better breathing experience. Thanks again. ❤️

Thank you Adriene. I havent been able to do yoga since COVID19 started due to a knee injury but this morning this came up on my screen and so I got up, set my mat in the garden and practiced. It felt so good to be back on the mat, setting intentions and finding stillness. I loved the pace of this practice. What a gift to rejoin yoga with this!

I have been doing these daily to eleviate pain from some funky shoulder issue until I could get to the chiropractor. Not only did it lessen soreness but I increased flexibility. These are just what I needed. Will continue using them to prevent future issues. Thank you so much

seems great!! my shoulders have been getting more and more painful recently and constantly been feeling really tight and hunched. i just tried this for the first time going a little more gently on one shoulder as it’s particularly weak and easily injured and i found this routine didn’t hurt that shoulder like some others do…and it has given me immediate relief! thank you so much Esther!!

I love all of your classes and instruction! So helpful for finding balance and energy and relaxation in the body. I’ve been following your channel for over a year now and I have to say the ads at the end are very distracting and disturbing. They are very loud and feel counterproductive for all the peace and calmness we create. I hope this is useful. I realize this is your business and rely on contributions and subscribers to earn an income and create beautiful videos. Maybe there’s an alternative way to have to ads not at the end of savasna and that don’t take away from great yoga channel. Thank you for your beautiful yoga and teachings!
