Junk science by this alleged Dr. You may burn more fat when you eat a high fat diet but it’s because…….you are eating more fat! You do not dip into your body fat stores any more than you would eating a high carbohydrate diet with the same caloric density. So to say low carb diets put you into a fat burning state is misleading as the Dr implies you are utilising stored fat which it wont do unless you are not consuming sufficient energy.
Why eat all blue zones a diet high in carbs? Personal I eating a Mediterranean high ora, no aloohol. diet 35 years. I,m still healthy 62 years still same kg when I was 20. 1.85 cm. 72kg.

Hi, I’m very confused. I started IF and try to keep to a keto diet. My endocrinologist said that my cholesterol is slightly high and due to family history he said I should not be on keto and I should not be fasting from 8am, he said that I should have a large breakfast and then fast. I cannot fast this way, once I start eating I can’t stop. I’m so confused.

Can you throw guidance on my dietary needs with regard to hypothyroidism. I’m a mature 70yr old lady and finding satiety is the key to staying away from excess carbohydrates and sugars.
Fortunately I enjoy certain salads in the warmer weather especially that are easy to digest.
I use Olive oil and avocado oil with added nuts to my diet Brazil’s, walnuts and almonds in small quantities.
I’ve looked at diets for hypothyroidism, anti inflammatory Keto, intermittent fasting to name a few! I have to be careful with brassicas,
soya, bean sprouts, some grains, omitting legumes. I have to go steady with the onion family garlic etc…
Onion and garlic are good for home made vegetable soup, mildly spiced but I have to go steady on root vegetables.
Please can you give some of your expertise on things mentioned.
I used slippery elm, gia seed puddings made with organic almond milk, took supplements Lglutamine, cut down on meats, dairy cut out alcohol completely because of a non alcoholic liver and my hypothyroidism.
Constipation has been an issue. Fresh lemon in warm water help with peristalsis in the mornings.
I do have pure organic coffee in the morning which also helps kick start my day.

I was with you until you recommended the processed salad dressing. That stuff almost always has sugar, bad fat and preservative chemicals. Best to make your own Caesar dressing from natural ingredients including sour cream and homemade mayo made with a healthy oil. Or use olive, liberally. So plugging it for money and misleading people? Most people will only hear yay I can be healthy and douse my salad with lot of store bought dressing. I’m disappointed in this channel for this.
If you want to eat healthy unsaturated fats, taste 2 tablespoons of spanish or greek extra virgin olive oil in your salad, or a fistful of olives instead.

I would like you to make a video on Carnivore v/s keto for weight loss.
My doctor strictly warned me off avocados because they have very high potassium, which hurts my kidneys. I have diabetes and my high blood sugar has cause me kidney damage. I would guess that a very large percentage of people on the keto diet are diabetics with kidney issues who can’t eat avocados, or any other high potassium foods.
We eat a lot of salad and I simply put olive oil on my greens then squeeze a half of a lime. Delicious!

Conflicting information everywhere about eating fats. Are saturated fats “good” for heart? My physicians recommend olive oil for salads & cooking rather than higher saturated fats. MCT is higher in saturated fat than olive oil.

Kraft makes a great peanut butter. The only ingredient is PB with no salt added, and it does separate; you need to keep it upside down in your fridge once opened.
Saturated fat and dietary cholesterol are dated paradigms. The human body produces 10 times the amount of cholesterol than what we are told to consume in a single day. People are starting to realize that grains, processed foods, sugar and excess carbs in combination with high omega 6 intake are what cause inflammation. Not healthy fats. Not all fats are created equal. Any hydrogenated oils high in omega 6 are poisonous. We are so unhealthy as a nation because these fake fats like canola, vegetable oil, margarine and seed oils contain lethal amounts of omega 6 fatty acids which throws our 6:3 ratio out of whack. Get as much omega 3’s as you possibly can people!

How to make sallad dressing, was the first cooking I learned. A child can do it.
A little salt, two thirds oil, one third real vinegar, good stuff, black pepper, herbs and garlic to taste.
Or use sour cream or yoghurt, add spices, lemon, whatever. Crushed walnuts are wonderful in dressings.
So why buy readymade weird things? Like the big bag of gluish fat free dressing I got at McDonalds, instead of real olive oil, they had this weird starch mixture.

Eggs aren’t allowed to be advertised by law as “healthy” nor “high in protein” (if the advertisers are taking money from the government), and being high in cholesterol means it’s more likely to clog arteries so I don’t see why that’s been shown as a positive note.

I tend to stick to whole plant fats like avo, nuts, seeds, coconut meat etc. Animal fats are too high in cholesterol. Plus the 14 of the 15 leading causes of our death have been scientifically linked to eating animal products. Plus, it’s not ethical, neither good for the planet.

Thanks I just started keto and I’ve been eating stuff like bacon and processed meats. I knew it wasn’t healthy and I was confused how this diet is good, but this video makes much more sense. I will say though UC Davis’s food science department just came out with an article finding that 82% of avocado oils are either rancid or mixed with other less healthy oils. So just be careful before deciding which to buy!

A humble question?? First thing in morn, I usually have 2-3 cups of Keto Coffee (Ghee & MCT C8) plus some BHB’s.. A couple hours later my ketones went up (Today.8 to 2.4) and my glucose also went up (97-108). An increase in ketones was expected but why would the glucose go up by 11????? Any thoughts????
FYI, 2 hours later, Glucose back down to 100 and ketones at 3.2 (zowee!!!).. Still don’t like my glucose numbers but after eating crap for 70 years, will probably take some time to overcome IR and burn off al the excess glucose stored in my body. Thx!!!

Solid video! Thank you. I did have one question about eating raw nuts and seeds. I have read, for years, multiple articles about the phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors in raw nuts/seeds. Apparently, these interfere with the nutrient absorption and can cause intestinal irritation. I’ve noticed they don’t taste as good raw, but soaking and roasting them significantly improve the taste. Soaking them and roasting them is an age old tradition, according to articles. Any thoughts on this? I have included a URL to one article, if you’re interested.

Question: Was told by someone to soak the nuts in water for 24 hrs to lessen the oxalates?
I had 3 separate bouts w/kidney stones (5-6ml but they hurt like Hell) over the past 6 yrs & was given a low oxalate diet that banned most nuts & nut milks, among other foods.
OK so I don’t drink Almond or cashew milk s anymore (coconut milk for me now & occasionally grass-fed whole moo milk).
I was eating a lot of almonds daily to lower cholesterol & blood pressure, Brazil nuts for the selenium, occasional peanut butter, drank colas almost x5 a week,etc but then kidney stones came onto the scene so I cut out almonds & peanuts, Coke, colas, etc however I still LOVE my raw pistachios!!!
Can I eat a “safe” amount to get the benefit from them w/out going off Keto but more important (for me) lessen my chance of getting another friggin stone or do I need to give them up altogether?
I’ll go w/whatever you’d advise.

GREAT video on healthy fats! Here’s proof enough for me that EGGS are HEALTHY nourishment. I have eaten 2 3 eggs DAILY for 2 YEARS. (My own backyard chickens) My HDL Risk Factor ratio is 3.3%. That is ONE-HALF the average coronary risk for women. My Triglyceride/HDL Ratio is 1.07 which is also excellent too! My fasting glucose level is way below average too. The longer I stay mostly Keto, the better these good numbers will likely get. I eat grass-fed butter (sometimes by the tablespoonful as a snack) and loads of avocados. ALL of these are considered “unhealthy” fats by old-school nutritionists and our wonderful Federal government. YES! Sometimes we need a break from strict keto. My favorite break is cannolis too!

The way you explained the Omega 6 3 ratio for beef tallow, you made it sound like get 4x omega 6 to 1x omega 3 ratio, then explained that Omega 6 is highly inflammatory lol. I know it’s opposite but alot of people might get it mixed up / confused. Ya I watched that part a few times, you even have your hand elevated and say make sure your omega 6 is higher than omega 3 (hand lower).

I started keto 2.5 months ago and did max of 20 total carbs a day and managed to bring triclygerides down from 419 to 123 and A1C from 5.9 to 5.1 in just 2.5 months, this really works. My only worry is that my good colesterol HDL was already low at 36 and now has dropped to 28 yet I’ve been eating all the recommended foods. Do you have any idea why this happened? I’m going to continue and see if it goes up, maybe I’ll do another blood test in 2 months.

Great video! Also, I never cook with olive oil. The entire structure of the oil changes when you heat it. Use only as salad dressings or anything you don’t have to heat. I do cook with avocado oil, though. Love it!
Love animal fat, esp. beef tallow and dripping..actually just sauteed some beef kidney with beef fat. Besides that, I adore avocado, coconut oil and a bit of olive oil for the salads.

Hi Dr Nick. I’d like to hear a little more about how you jump between diets such as paleo and Keto. I’m new to Keto and your channel as of this winter (2019). I grew up on what we call today the Mediterranean diet and never had issues. I ended up w/ celiac disease in 2013 and was on the autoimmune paleo diet for 9 months and felt the best I ever did but it’s not meant to be a forever diet. I began Keto this spring and always learning. Can you explain about jumping between diets and also your carb weekends? I’m very interested! Life is to live and this idea lends itself to the moderation concept.

Should every meal be balanced to those fat/protein/carb macros or could it be on a daily basis. Like is it ok to have mostly fats & protein (eggs & bacon) for breakfast then mostly protein & carbs for lunch (salad & salmon), etc. as long as by the end of the day my macros balance out?
Why not just keep things simple? Eat your fat first, then the protein and carbs last (if you still need them). I’m finding that I lose weight with this WOE without even trying and it’s a lot more filling and satiating than anything else I’ve tried. Oh, and BTW: I’m in ketosis without ever worrying about my macros.
Help me, my Dr is killing me, I have chronic pancreatitis and can not digest fats very well, I heard mct oil does not need to be broken down by the pancreas but it goes straight through me and nuts cause a lot of pain. Egg and avocado are fine.

I eat olive oil with my McDouble and only about 30% of the bread. I give the rest of the bread to my feathered friends in the porch.
I think most ppl are sensitive to peanuts but they just dont know it. There is a spectrum from visible reactions to invisible. I barely noticed my sensitivity.

There is no such thing as a truly raw cashew sold as a food product.
The “raw” cashews you can buy have been steamed, as actual raw cashews would be dangerous to handle or eat.

Dear dr Sten i follow your talks very regularly and for the most part i can follow and agree. Only the definition of aerobic exercise gives me some douts. You limit those exercise at a hb of 120, but i made a vo2max test: i use to run, i am 68, my mhr is 175 and the amount of acid lactate stays below 4 mol til the hr of 160. From this level it goes very fast very high, meaning that i am in the anaerobic zone. I don t want to emphasize that i want to run close to 160 but 140 even higher has been described as mainly aerobic, i also have no problems with talking at those heartrates
So, my question: is 120 not too low as a marker of aerobic exercise? And running a little bit faster is so much more fun! Thanks for your extremely good talks not only in terms of content but i appreciate the way of your talking, slow and clear as we are foreigners, that s rezlly great

I overeat a bit daily on good label macadamia nutbutter. Say 100g a day . Is it bad for a galbladder?
I like the taste onviously, but also it is one few things below 5 on insulin index. Low on omega6, low on phytic acid. And it helps with cravings/cheats. And it blunts a carb meal like oats

Macadamias have a good omega-3 to omega-6 ratio. Peanuts have high omega-6 oils percentage which can contribute to chronic inflammation.

But I’m hitting the keto diet hard with intermittent fasting and exercise also in fasted state. Dr. Becky, HOW can a 70+ year old female possibly get 1200mg of calcium while following an 18:6 or other variations of IF without absolutely stuffing yourself on 2 or 1 meal a day???? THIS is my huge question that no one seems to be able to answer. I know the various plant based foods, but one can’t possibly stuff enough of them into the 1 or 2 meals/day! LOVE this video. I have eggs, nuts, yogurt, avocado, and chia seeds almost every day. I WISH I had salmon everyday. When I eat healthy fats at each meal, along with adequate protein, I definitely notice lower sugar cravings throughout the day. I recently made a yummy cob bowl last week with chicken, avocado, cheese, hard-boiled egg, grape tomatoes, bacon (I know….controversial but so yummy), peas, and edamame.

Fish gets the omega 3 from algae, so you can indeed get marine omega 3! I take it every day, it works fine to be plantbased as well.
Dr. Becky I like the texture of greek yogurt, I consume Bulgarian Yogurt Probiotic with acidophilus, bulgaricus, thermophilus and bifidum it comes in a glass container and has 9 carbs per cub, what is your opinion should I stick to this one or switch to greek? I’m still learning how to count the daily amounts of carbs, I have lost 20 pounds. I cook everything fresh and natural, nothing processed.

Best thing I discovered eating high fat, low carb…
One egg mixed with spinach, kale, or dandelion fried in coconut oil or butter, with a little melted cheese. Spread some mashed avocado mixed with garlic on top and a big spoonful of salsa on top of that. Makes a fantastic breakfast.
Thanks to your plan and other on line education, I dropped to an ideal weight and am now on maintenance lifestyle eating these foods that we all thought were bad. I have eaten more full fat yogurt, blueberries, cream, avocado, etc in the last 10 mo than in the last 10 yrs. Cut out sugar, cut down carbs with your plan as a guide. It’s doable but is hard getting it into the mainstream unfortunately.
You could use 4 of these in a smoothie! Yogurt, avocado, walnuts, & chia. Just add a few berries & a bit of stevia to make it sweet. I like to experiment with smoothie “recipes.”:) Thank you Dr. Becky!
I think chia seeds need to be ground up or they will just pass through the body. I love Greek yogurt and it is great to add to soups for a bit of creamy tang.
I recommend Two Good greek yogurt. There are only 2 sugars and 3 carbs per serving, and they don’t taste like other low carb brands I’ve tried.

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Hypothyroidism when I was 12 now I’m 52. At 12 my endocrinologist put me on radioactive iodine to kill my over grown goiter & on Synthroid. Im not sure how long I was on but it was less than a year. I don’t know what iodine killed off my goiter or my thyroid but I’ve been on synthroid ever since. Any it’s been a crazy journey but I’m just now really learning about inflammation & what foods I can & cannot eat… my weight is 230 so I’ve tried keto before and I did lose weight but then I got off and gained more than I lost. Since the health risk are worse do you think people with my condition would benefit from a lap-ban or some kind of stomach surgery to lose weight because it feels like it will take too long to lose weight and other illnesses could accrue due to my obesity??? What would you do? Thank you

I know this is getting into “the weeds” but I am hoping you might address those with the ApoE 4 allele. Like myself this 20-25% of the population has a poor response to saturated fat by overproduction of small LDL particles. I’m doing KETO using only Olive Oil and Avocado as my sources of fat. I also eat mostly fish and very lean cuts. Coconut oil drives my numbers way off the optimal. Note that I’m not buying into the cholesterol myth per se….but close monitoring has proven this physiological response both with my body and with others who are ApoE 4 (discussion on a forum).
Can you tell me some more about chia seeds? Are pecans a substitute for walnuts?

Overall it just doesn’t make sense. Most of your meals are going to be vegetables (carbs) and protein (increases insulin) and supplemented with fats. Therefore there is no way that your diet is going to be 60% fat calorie content. The numbers just don’t add up.

I honestly DO NOT know how you work at a firm full time and manage to upload so frequently and upload such well edited videos at that!
