Why is niacin suggested with other drugs such as magnesium? I had a doctor tell me to take magnesium for sleep and to also take niacin, he made it sound important, but niacin always gives me the flushing feeling and makes it very uncomfortable when I’m trying to sleep. Doesn’t make any sense

Actually Niacin and vitamin C stopped my symptoms of colitis and diverticulitis. I’ll always go back to this…your body knows what to do with nutrients but doesn’t know what to do with chemicals and that’s why people end up sick. However, my friend was on Lipitor for years and has had several heart attacks, strokes, and now is going through kidney failure. Yayyy Big Pharma.
Dr. Kiel, you forgot to mention: Niacin in higher doses incrementally (especially, 500 to 3000 mg) reduces Lp(a), a common cause of atherosclerosis and heart attacks (especially when 50% of people who have heart attacks have normal cholesterol, but often have high Lp(a) as not commonly tested by most physicians. I’m on niacin 1500mg for that). Niacin is the only (or one of the very few) methods to treat high Lp(a) as it is genetic. To reduce increase in fasting glucose (or HbA1c) from higher doses, I take it at 3 pm and eat early dinner (or often skip it, like a 16 hour fast till next breakfast; usually salad, no carbs, remember it converts food to energy) and do some workout (to use the energy) while watching news at 6:30pm.

Nicotinic acid also has a pathway to help recharge the NAD+ which powers the mitochondria. It is a cheap version of NMN or NR. Not sure about the dosing but I take 200 mg in my daily STAC.
Great and informative video on Niacin, however, I disagree with your thoughts on Inositol Hexanicotinate. This preparation has most of the therapeutic advantages of niacin and none of the side effects (i.e. uncomfortable flushing); the only downside is that it costs perhaps three times as much as “regular” niacin, but is still much better than the cheapest statins. Inositol hexaniacinate is an ester of inositol and nicotinic acid. Each inositol molecule contains six nicotinic acid molecules. This ester is broken down slowly in the body. It is about as effective as nicotinic acid (niacin) and is almost free of side effects. It is very gentle, effective, and can be tolerated by almost every person who uses it.
Also a note regarding hepatotoxicity: this is most prominent when taking sustained released (SR) niacin. A study by McKenny et al. directly compared IR (instant released) and SR (sustained-released) niacin in a randomised clinical trial with dosage escalation from 500 to 3,000 mg/day over a period of 30 weeks. None of the 23 patients taking IR niacin developed hepatotoxic effects, whereas 12 of 23 patients (52%) taking SR niacin did. Therefore immediate-release niacin is normally recommended.

I took 1.5g of Niacin to lower cholesterol (65kg and 165cm). About 2 months of 1.5g of Niacin, I felt nausea, dryness of skin and cannot take meats. My blood pressure has come down substantially from 140/90 level to 110/70 level. But now I reduced the dosage to 250-500mg a day. I think liver damage is a real issue with high dose of niacin. With a bit lower (500mg a day), I don’t feel that side effects. Flush is not so much of concern, but vomiting and nausea which seems to link to liver damage can be a big thing.

Absolute rubbish.. Simple statin ist scaremongering. I’ve been on statins and it was a dreadful experience with side effects like muscle pain, psychological damage, incipient diabetes, eye problems (incipient cataract), and constant anxiety. I took coq10 which ameliorated the worst of the symptoms but I still suffered damage. I reported my symptoms but the hospital wrote back that a little muscle was worth the other ‘benefits’. What this’s study shows is that cholesterol is not the cause oh heart disease. It is seven years after my heart attack, six and a half after giving up statins, and I am fitter and totally drug free.

oddly, when I take a multiple vitamin (I.e. garden of life) which contains a mere 20mg of nicotinic acid I get a major niacin flush reaction!! I never seem to get use to it. generally my HDL cholesterol is 120, LDL is 99 and triglycerides are 60.
If you listen to Doctor Ashton she mentions that the study was funded by Merck and also that the study covered Niacin and a drug to prevent flushing. I was interested to find out what that drug was, a quick Google search pulled up a Reuters Report that blames the ill effects that Dr. Ashton describes, not on the Niacin, but on Merck’s drug “Tredaptive.”

One side effects I have, well I have many, but one is that teeth gum seems to swollen up after niacin intake with flush. Also it feels like front teeth will pup out, why is that? Is that normal reaction. I take around 1 g niacin.

Listen very carefully how she says they “were put on a combination drug-niacin with an anti flushing drug”. This is prescription Niaspan, which is extended release Niacin. My M.D. told me to NOT take Niaspan, as it gave him hepatitis, and take normal Niacin. I believe the pharmaceutical company took an OTC vitamin and made it extended release so they could patent it. This video and all other videos I have seen refuse to use the name “Niaspan” and instead call it Niacin. The New England Journal of Medicine study calls it “extended release Niacin” in the title of the study, not Niacin. They are protecting the drug company

If you’re on the keto diet and are trying prolonged fasting. i believe niacin is very dangerous as your blood pressure while fasting will already be low and you’ll poison yourself with potassium.

Its interesting, I took 100 mg and I had a flush within 10 minutes. After that I took 50 mg several times a day with an hour or more in between. I never got a flush at this level. I now take about 10 doses of 50 mg a day.
BEFORE TAKING SLOW RELEASE OR NO FLUSH OPTIONS INSTEAD OF REGULAR NIACIN DO YOUR RESEARCH ABOUT THE DOWNSIDE. Regular niacin will not cause flushing if you slowly build up your dose over days or weeks FLUSHING DOES NOT HARM YOU ITS JUST UNCOMFORTABLE FOR A SHORT PERIOD YOU FEEL HOT AND ITCHY FOR 15-30-60 MIN OR SO. it depends how sensitive you are to it so start with the low dose maybe 50mg/day and build up.

I hope to get a response… I purchased a flush free niacin, by accident (flush free is in small print), and I’m using it to help my vascularity in transporting other nutrients throughout my body. Towards the end of this video it was mentioned to avoid those products. Is the flush free version entirely useless especially for what I am trying to do with my diet? I’m not too concerned with lowering or raising cholesterol at this time.
