How did you deal with the fall out from the health issue which led to field change ?
Backstory: I did 1 year IM and 3 years critical care training ( I am in India) but unfortunately I caught a drug resistant ESBL producing E.Coli infection. Subsequently I developed urosepsis. This recurred a few times and had to be treated with multiple hospital admissions and IV Carbapenems. By that time I had to lost almost a year of productive time.
So I decided to get teaching creds in Physiology and also completed my thesis while being relatively sick.( Something to fall back on) Now I am a junior faculty in a med school and teach mostly MS-1 and MS-2 + have research role + work in the neurophysiology clinic of the hospital + general medicine out patient service . I have been free from infections for more than a year and am 14 weeks pregnant ( which I thought was an impossible dream during my 3 year long bout of illness)
But now the problem is that I want to return to critical care or at least get some training in IM. Dont know how feasible is that as I am 33 years old and pregnant.
How did you guys overcome your personal health issues ? Did you rejoin your primary speciality or did you change to a less labour intensive speciality ? And most importantly how did you guys continue with medicine without falling into the pits ?
