Barbell high rows are perfect for working those upper back muscles, particularly between the shoulder blade. The key here is to, first, keep the knees slightly bent to protect the lower back and engage the abs. You want to bring the barbell up to your chest rather than to your belly button, as you do with regular barbell rows.
2.Lie facedown on the floor. Contract your gluteus maximus (butt muscles) and raise your chest and arms off the floor. Point your thumbs toward the ceiling.
Bring your shoulder blades together with a hard contraction, while pushing them toward your tail bone. Hold for 10 seconds 3 times.Squeeze your shoulder blades together to work your upper back even more. Then, slowly lower back down to the ground resting your forehead down.

So much pain in my upper back, starts with tingling half hour after getting up and continues to get worse all day. My upper back is rounded from years of lathe work. Will start this routine as soon as my roller arrives.

I noticed that my neck is little band forward which completely changed my posture and balance. I did X Ray of my neck, according to doctor my neck is straight there is no curve. when I try to straight my neck which you mentioned in the beginning, I feel pain in left hand shoulder it’s nerve pain. Do you ever recommend those electronic devices that you can stick to your back and that vibrate when it detects you standing incorrectly? In my every day I try to be conscious of my posture my girlfriend is always telling me off when I forget and I’m slouching. Hopefully these exercises will help me with that anyway!
I have another problem. One day i fell down during playing volleyball. Pain came out in my right leg hip. Now that pain is shifted in right side of lower back. That was happened about six month before. Please recommend some exercises and tell me that how can i get rid of it.

I am a 67 year old female with very very slight scoliosis that my chiropractor noticed. It’s in my mid to upper back and has ached since I was a child. Am starting to develop a dowagers hump and want to stop that! When doing the wall angels I don’t know what my lower back (around my waist and lower) should be doing. Should it, along with the rest of my back, be flat against the wall? If so, it is painful. What do you recommend?

I started doing your foam roller exercises abt 2 weeks ago. After I did the foam roller & wall angel exercises the very first time, I immediately felt a very significant improvement to my posture. My family also immediately confirmed the big change to my head posture. This led me to continue doing the exercises. Thks very much for these exercises.
Every time I do the foam roller exercises I experience a tingling in my left arm down to my hand as I lie down on the foam roller. I also experience my left shoulder/arm restricted or tight to move more so than my right side for example when doing the towel drill I experience my right hand can touch the floor over my head quite easily while my left hand has to “struggle hard” to touch the floor. I also have those tingling & restricted feelings when I do the angel exercises. Pls help me understand why do I get those tingling & restricted feelings & also what I need to to do to prevent happening in future. (Note: As I enter the 3rd week I begin to notice the tingling & restricted feelings begin to be less in intensity.)
I am 80yrs golfer & I usually walk my club’s hilly golf course pulling my golf trolley. I hv been doing this ok before the pandemic lockdown started in Feb2020 I play with flight-mates 10-15yrs younger. Last week 30jun I played my first game after the lockdown was partially lifted. I had to struggle hard to finish playing & pulling my trolley through 18holes. This was a significant achievement for me. Beside feeling my legs were very heavy to move, I also experienced a little more difficulty in straightening up my “hunched” back. My back gets hunched often after a golf game or after hitting balls at the driving range. Pls help me understand what to do to avoid getting my back hunched when I play golf & also what exercises to do to strengthen my back. Thks.

I get a tightness/irritation in my neck near my shoulders when I do these exercises, is this normal or am i doing something wrong?

angel exercise works for me. im getting shoulder blade pain since 2015. i did the wall angel exercise only for 20 seconds. all those pain disapeared temporarily.

Wow what a great video! This is my first video search ever for tilted pelvic and u popped up! My pain is exactly where u described in the video. I’m definitely going to try these exercises because having a tilted pelvis and scoliosis is no joke. Ive been doing yoga for about 1 year and I recently noticed that my back bends waaay more when doing cobra compared to when I first started. Its the little things that count these days. I’m having problems doing the neck one properly. I can’t seem to keep the tennis ball there, I have a long neck and a prominent Joey’s Apple, and the space between that and the chin isn’t enough.
This is exactly my problem…I’ve been fighting this with physical therapy, but I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and it’s been hard to keep the gains I make. I am now on full drug therapy and my strength is increasing. I’m glad I found this video, and I’m going to try these exercises because they seem like they’d work better than the ones I’ve been doing. Thanks you, thank you, thank you!!! just after 1 time doing it, I feel such a relief in my neck and my pain is gone. This was such an easy fix to release the tension,, I will include this in my morning routine… For me, the exercise that fixed it instantly was the one with the tennis ball,, I think my problem was with tension in the upper thoracic spine coming from heavy kettlebell swings.. However, I do them all,, including the leg exercise not shown here to fix back problems.

I do not remember if you taught me this for my previously terrible posture, now just bad, sshaped spine, but I stand up at a wall jam (between two rooms = 4-6″ wide, heels against wall, then butt, then shoulders, then all the back touch the wall and try for the knees and finally my kyphotic neck so my head touches. It forces in the anterior core (abdominals) and pulling the shoulders back as far as you can to push against the wall is a huge isomemetric strengthener. Started at 20-30 seconds and have gotten to 5 minutes. Everything to maintain straight posture is strengthening. I also had been doing a lot of you other exercises: dead lifts, face pulls etc but dentistry sucks for back posture and I must correct before I get old. i am only 75 so gotta keep it up.
Too much typing = tight wrist (flexion?-up and back as with palm flat on desk and straightening the arm. Overall with arthritis I am looking to maintain as much flexibility in my wrist as possible (so I can go back to golf.)

People, it works. In just 6 months i’ve seen great improvement on my posture. My friends keep saying that i look taller. My chest looks nicer and my upper back also.
I still need to fix the head posture though. I believe if i keep this up in a less than a year i will have it fixed. Quality reps, Good form and Consistency(3 5 times per week 15 minutes or so).
One more tip. Try to incorporate few neck stretches and a couple more exercises(Over and backs is a great one).
Would this issue (chain of events) cause back and leg pain while running? I also have mild spondylolisthesis. I’ve been struggling to get back into running. I’m going to give these stretches a try. Thank you for the great info!!
Doing these posture series videos helped fixed my neck pain, frozen shoulders, tight low back, tight abs, anterior pelvic tilt, tight glutes, weak hamstrings, rickety knees(left would give out unexpectedly), strained left calf and chronic cramping in my left foot. I’d recommend if any of these sound like issues you’ve faced.

Does pushing your shoulders back really make things worse? My physiotherapist told me that was actually a good thing to do.

I am a software programmer and I spend almost 10hours a day in front of my computer. I had been suffering with back issues for more than a year. Had chiropractic sessions, doctor visits but nothing worked out. I though this was just another posture fixing video so didn’t believe all the way and just started with the towel experiment. I can say things got better really quick really fast. I wish I saw this video sooner. Anyone who works with computers definitely need to do this(even if you dont have any problems because you will develop eventually). I myself am active and play tennis(USTA), scuba diver and workout but even I couldn’t escape from the back issues caused by constant sitting.
I asked my friends “what’s my worst quality” and they literally said I’m always slouching and then imitated the way I walk (but exaggerated)…I feel attacked

I don’t know what to doI’m only 14 and I’m having this constant pain in my back/ shoulder. My family has a history of having rounded shoulders and sometimes even scoliosis. My sister has it but grew out of it a few years ago after working on her posture through swimming. I know that my posture is not the best and quite unhealthy. Thanks Kelli! I have been doing this using two 1.5 liter water bottles (the tall slim bottles, with a ‘waist’ which is the ideal place to hold them). These are about 3lb each.:)
You never know how bad your posture is until someone takes a photo of you… I’ll certainly be sticking to this workout for a long time and building upper body strength from level one.

And for the information, this type of videos are hard to find, that are directly focused on posture and back pain. Especially for the People who doesn’t have time for full body workouts, money for gym or specialists.Also, another thing is that, Most of the time, videos from various fitness instructors on different channels are kinda focused on people who are already in a bit good shape. (again, i don’t mean there are no contents on other channels about this particular exercise, it’s just they mostly are a bit hard for the starters, in my opinion)
I’m 47 year old man. I’ve had terrible pain in my upper back. I’ve had ribs out of place many times. It’s hard to breathe when that’s happening. I’ve been doing this routine for several months at least twice a week and now I’m back to living my life again. I also do an ab routine. Thank you Kelly. I’m able to work harder and longer and can play the family too.

This routine really has been a lifesaver for me. I’m in my mid-twenties and suffer from really bad back and neck pain that doctors can’t fully figure out. Recovering labrum-bankart repair patients like myself may be able to perform this exercise set. It didn’t cause any pain or problems for my shoulder, and the rows are similar to what my PT recommended to me anyway. Just as the lady said, it’s great for shoulders, and we’re aiming for endurance and stamina stability.

I have a weird condition that makes doing mundane things with my arms very painful, and it gets way worse if I have bad posture and a weak back. I can’t go to physical therapy so I really can’t thank you enough for this video. It’s helped me so much and brought so much relief. I even use bottles of wine as weights and it works great!

Day 1 I felt relieve because usually when I wake up I have backpain but I didn’t. So yeah, It stretches me.
I have a bad body posture like a hunchback. I do not like to see my body like that. I spend a lot of time using laptop to do my assignment and various ways I sat. every time I sit I will try to tighten my back so that it looks straight and not hunched over. but it was very painful, sluggish and uncomfortable. but after I tried this exercise. it was very helpful and I could feel the change in myself.

The days i do it, i feel at first a bit tired, but then i become energetic, i tend to eat more properly and my body is becoming healthy and fit, but, most important, healthy!!! Thanks a lot about this, Emi! You are amazing and your whole story and your exercises give me motivation! First time a channel about fitness gives me so good motivation!!!

I’m 17 years old and I’ve got the worst posture imaginable! I’m almost in constant neck, shoulder and back pain. I’m constant dizzy (possible because of tension in my neck, who knows! Doctors don’t seem to know ♀️) This seem like a good posture workout so I’m actually gonna give this a try. I’ll try and keep an update…but I don’t only have the prize in worst posture, but memory as well hehe
Day 1: I think I tried to push it a bit too much so sometimes it hurt but I took a step back so it wouldn’t hurt. Overall my back hurts and my neck. I’ve already been doing 15 minutes of neck workout today.

As a designer i sit at my computer for hours and it has worsened my already poor posture. Review: The stretches are really nice, i feel like im a tiny bit more flexible. I noticed that my hands touch the floor when i do the up and down 3 points. And i also notice that i remind myself to stand straight more often throughout the day as well as started sleeping without pillows to see if it makes a difference. Im also focusing strengthening my upper body, i think that helps to maintain and build that posture. ofc its nowhere near what i want it to be. and i also missed 3 days of l1.

Thank you Emi! I have some neck and posture problems so this is just what I need. I can tell these exercises are good, because most of them are the same ones my physiotherapist told me to do at home. But now with your video it is much more fun and easy to stick to them as a routine:)

Seriously I never knew why all the sudden last year my gait was off as I felt one leg was suddenly higher than the other putting more pressure causing more strength on one side on my body vs the other! And progressively getting worse. Doing these stretches/workout once made me feel soo much better. I realize I need to add some strength training to the weakened side. If you can follow up with those exercises would be great!!! Thank you for sharing these!

Tip! stand flat against a wall stand tall (heals touching!) than slowly move your shoulders back so both sides touch the back of the wall. Then keep your back like that and step forward.
Cobra stance is doing wonders on lower back!! Also I find good in Chin nods.
Only one I’m afraid of doing is the first exercise you do (Over-and-Backs). Since I had a left shoulder surgery last year (moving abilty is quite back), but i’m just too afraid to actually move/rotate my hand(shoulder) like that:D
It used to dislocate like for 9 years before surgery…
Wow tried this for 2 weeks straight doing it 2 times a day! My posture is already way better and I’m in way less back pain. This is also free vs spending hundreds/thousands on going to a physical therapist or chiropractor. Thank you so much @Jeremy Ethier
The dislikes are people who thought just watching the video will change their posture. The same people that get mad when looking at a book cover doesn’t make them smarter.

Once I did this routine it even relieved my back pain! I’ve only started back at it again, so my posture has improved just a little bit, so I need to carry on doing it and posture will definitely get better.
The reason why I have bad posture is because I draw, I do schoolwork I go on my phone…and at all of those moments, I am hunching. It’s so easy to fall back into the same habit so imma try to keep bringing my shoulders back like my mum tells me too. Thanks FitnessBlender!!

disc is reduced in height hypointense on T2W images, indicating disc desiccation.
Lumbar vertebrae are normal in height and reveal normal bone marrow signal intensity on pulse
sequences.
No marrow edema is seen on T2WFS images.
There is no evidence of diskitis.
Conus medullaris is normal in morphology and signal intensity on all pulse sequences. CS
No pre or paravertebral soft tissue abnormality is seen.
On T2WFS images prominent bilateral sacroiliitis is seen.
IMPRESSION: MRI study reveals:

I have had sciatica for 3 years now leaving me unable to tolerate sitting at all. I stand for dinner and do not drive or watch tv/play games. I spend my time laying flat on my back or workout out. Nothing else. Yet i still have tight hip flexors and hyperlordosis. Any ideas what im doing wrong?

Quick question for anyone doing the Over-And-Backs, I find I get a much better stretch if I hold the position of the towel behind my back rather than repeat the motion. Is there anything wrong with doing this, or should I be going through the entire range every time?
Jeremy made the routines look so easy but they’re definitely very challenging, especially for a beginner like me. I’m looking forward to doing these more consistently and seeing results.

When I put my back on the wall and raise my arms.. my right is almost flush with the wall but my left cant. I feel like my left shoulder/shoulder blade is too rounded and it kinda hurts if i were to try to make it flush

I myself can guarantee (for the general public with no back injuries) that this video is 100%. I’m not a big fan of calling things ‘science-based’ when it comes to fitness as its an overused term in this industry its inaccurate use can lead to some dangerous training with less knowledgeable ‘bros’.

Thanks Jeremy for another fantastic video. I can confirm that after seeing multiple physical therapists and trainers for my DDD, these are all the exercises that made any difference. The only thing I might recommend adding would be a chair sit/arm extension (from foundation training program). This one is less corrective, but really does a great job of strengthening the entire posterior chain in one move.
Was just going to ask what I was doing wrong. Whenever I do the Quadruped Thoracic Rotations exercise I never really feel that ‘stretch’ that you are supposed to feel in the mid back area. I feel the strain/stretch more in my arms and sides. What should I do to correct this?
