Gluteus Maximus (Glute) Strain Stretches & Exercises Ask Doctor Jo

Place hands behind the back and tip forward until back is parallel to the floor and flat, abs braced. Take left leg out to the side, resting on toe. Squat with the right leg while simultaneously lifting the left leg a few inches off the ground in a leg lift. Bring the left toe.The lying hip adduction is an exercise for the inner thigh muscles.
Lie on your side, bend your top knee, and plant your top foot flat on the floor in front of your bottom knee. Flex your inner thigh muscles on your bottom leg to lift your bottom leg off the ground. Hold for one second and then lower.8. Floor hip flexors. This exercise stretches your hip flexors, thighs, and glutes.
Instructions: Lie on your back and pull your right leg into your chest.Alternating Leg Circles. This exercise is AMAZING for the mobility of your hips. You will develop the hip flexors ( muscles that flex the hip) and inner thighs (adductors). In addition, your core is developed due to a high core engagement and stabilization.
Today I’m sharing 9 of my favorite hip and glute strengthening exercises that’ll stabilize your hips joints and help you get relief from pain. I’ll be including bodyweight exercises, banded exercises, as well as a few more challenging variations using sliders.Stand with your feet hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in your left hand in front of your left thigh, palm facing back.
Shift your weight to your right leg, and lift your left foot a few inches off of the floor behind you. This is the starting position.The side lying hip abduction exercise is the go to for early hip abductor strengthening. This exercise targets the Glute Medius, Glute Minimus, and the TFL. Another great exercise for early hip stability and targets one of the most commonly weak muscle groups is the general population.
These exercises will help build and strengthen the gluteus medius: Frog pump Lateral band work Side lunge Banded kick-out Skater lunge Side plank hip abduction.The hip thrusters are arguably the best exercise for the gluteus maximus. It elicits much more muscle activity in the gluteus maximus as a barbell squat or deadlift and that’s primarily because 4 unique characteristics of this exercise: The hip thrust is primarily a hip extension movement.Feel the stretch in your glute and hip.
Yoga squat Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, then bend your knees and drop your butt directly down to the ground.4 New Gluteus Medius Exercises for Strength and Balance. Luckily, I’ve never had to deal with a weak glute medius because I grew up playing hockey. Every stride in skating requires hip abduction – the main glute medius action – so anyone who has spent a lot of time on the ice is probably in the same boat.Align the shoulder, hips and anklebones in a straight line and hold the face parallel to the floor.
Next, step one foot up to the outside of the same-side hand before returning the foot to tis original position and alternating sides. This exercise will help activate the Gluteus Medius and Hip Flexors. Perform 5-10 lunge steps with each leg.The best butt and leg exercises, according to a fitness trainer. These six exercises will wake up your glutes and thighs after sitting all day.
Go:Step sideways onto the box with your right leg only, then contract your abs and squeeze your left glute as you bring your straight left leg behind you in a kickback motion. Hold for one count, then release the glute and step carefully off the box with your left leg, followed by your right.Single leg exercises increase hip muscle activation. When you stand or exercise on one leg, all of the muscles of the hip must work extra hard to stabilize your pelvis. This exercise works your glutes and hamstrings as well as your hip adductors and abductors.
It’s also useful for improving your balance.

THANK YOU, DOCTOR! I pulled my left glute and the hardest exercise for me was the figure 4 stretch and not the squat at the end. Any idea why that might be? I pulled it when I picked something up from the ground in a sort of squat motion and I almost yelled in agony. Haha

Hey, I was wondering if you could help me. I can never activate my left glute max and when I try I just get pain along the side of my butt. My right glute worked perfectly fine and I could always activate it however recently it’s started to get weaker too and I’m struggling with trying to activate it again. The side of my butt completely takes over and I end up feeling nothing in the centre of my butt. Any advice?
I’m not sure if anyone will see this.. But… I’ve tried this one a couple times and usually get just 2 rounds through. I’ve been working out a few months have lost 50 lb and thought about stopping..I had done a 40 min. cardio before this lower body routine and was feeling a little fatigued in my legs from it… But I told myself no, I’m finishing, regardless. I’m really proud I pushed through and an grateful my body is getting stronger and fitter. Thank you for putting these workouts out there.
I get really bad, sharp pain when I lift my bad side’s leg above my head while lying on my back. The pain radiates throughout my uppermost glute area, from the sacrum to the hip. The cobra pose makes that pain in the upper glute feel a really sharp pain as well. Do you think this is a glute issue, or do you think it stems from a herniated disc? I’ve seen several doctors and no one can provide a consensus diagnosis of what the main issue is

I’ve got a problem that’s been bothering me more than a year now. I can’t feel my right glute when I do lunges or bulgarian split squats. I can’t feel any burn or anything because it won’t activate. I’ve seen both a physiotherapist and osteopath but nothing seems to work… The only thing I do feel is my knee eventually start to hurt. I’m under the impression that the problem is somehow caused because of an imbalanace in the hips or glutes. The osteopath I went to told me that he thought my right glute couldn’t activate because the left glute or hip is weak and causing overload on the right one. Not sure if that’s the case or not. I just know I’m getting sooo sick of this… The osteopath has been cracking my back and hip/pelvis but I haven’t noticed any difference. The mobility is a little better (not as stiff as I used to) but I still can’t activate my glute. Any suggestions of what I could do?
Are the glute medius and quad muscles connected? My quad has been cramped for months and my glute on same leg is sore. If hold the glute while walking, my quad feels normal again.

I had partial anterior hip replacement about 2 1/2 months ago. exrays show good healing. My regular doctor told me to do lunges and squats and I eveidently was doing them wrong and now I have pain in my butt when I walk. Started taking neproxon which was prescribed because I have scoliosis. How many times a day should I do these exercises. How long should I expect these exercises to start relieving the pain. Will this help me I got hit in my butt right side 3 months ago with a forklift at work I got xrays they told me nothing was broke or fractured they told me it is sore now it just bother me sometimes it has a aching pinching feeling but sometime i wont feel it as much only when I sit down they recommend therapy but with this pandemic I’m not able to get therapy at the moment I’m not sure if it going to heal ever do you think this exercise will help? Hello. I believe I have a glute strain. About 3 months ago, after sprinting in my yard, my left glute and hamstring were sore, much more than usual. I stopped running but I didn’t do any other treatment. The soreness continued and gradually abated but it’s still there. My range of motion is the same, but walking on an incline or up stairs or sitting on a fitness ball can be painful. Will these exercises help me?

Hello, I’m 16 years old and 3-4 weeks ago I was squatting and while bottoming out of the squat I heard and felt a large pop right inside my glute, where the joint connects my femur and my pelvis. I felt instant pain but soon afterwards it subsided and I only felt large pain while moving my leg and bending over. For the days following I was walking with a limp and could not bend my leg at all without pain.
Since then it has gotten better and I can now walk without any issues and I only feel the pain when I am doing lunge movements and while at the bottom of a squat and while exploding up from the bottom. (I have not tried any weighted squats of course) I would really like to get back to squatting and deadlifting as soon as possible, but I don’t want to rush it and re-injure myself. If anyone has an suggestions/ advise, please tell me and if anyone has had the same problems, please tell me how long it took to recover/ what you did that helped your injury. Thanks so much
I used to be consistent with this years ago it most definitely gives you great results I had so many compliments and I could see definition smh I fell off but my legs are still sexy it helps with making you look curvier too
Can you still workout if you have a mild glute strain? I think I strained it last week doing squats. It hurts when I stand up or sit down, but it’s not excruciating. However, I don’t want to do any more damage either.

I’ve known about fitness blender for a long time and I have never tried their older workouts. This work out is perfect for beginners who are not active and are trying to start slow. Please do a warm up before starting this workout! I will say this was extremely easy for me but i was sweating a ton. If you’re not a beginner I would not do this workout but if you’re feeling lazy and still want your daily workout go ahead:)
Thank you for this video. I’m a powerlifter and I have struggled for about a year with intense glute pain in the 90% deadlift range. It’s very frustrating and demoralizing. I just did your routine today and will continue. Hopefully we can get this to go away.

There a pain in my glutes but it runs down my hamstring but some stretches for hamsting tightness doesn’t work but some do same with the glute stretches so some do some don’t I wanna know what I can do to help it
Hey doc, I’m truly at my wits end here. The problem is my right glute can easily active and grow but my left glute max can never seem to activate. Every time I try activating it the side of my glute takes over. I can activate my side muscle but not the main inner glute. My right glute is bigger than my left glute which is really bothering me because I can’t make any more progress until I fix my left glute. Any advice please?

I think I have my glute muscles pulled. I cannot sit, walk, bend. It’s been more than a week and the doctor prescriptions aren’t helping. will this benefit? I apply ice packs everyday but again, it’s not showing difference

Thanks for the video. I hurt my hip two days ago and I went to a physio session today. She did some massage and comment that was gluteus muscular strain. Before I went there it was not that painful, it only comes suddenly and then go down to the leg. I barely feel it while sitting or any other position. After I came home, my hip becomes very painful even I just lie down in my bed. In this case, can I do any stretch or exercise from this video? Thank you!

But when I started working out my goal was to lose weight and just maintain a specific weight but then you really inspired me a lot I can’t believe when I just starting out I cant even lift a 2 LBs dumbell I have to drop it if I want to finish the workout.Now I change it up to 3 and 5 Lbs and make it.

It feels like its bruised been hurting for 3 days when I started doing crunches on my carpet floor and now its stopping me from my ab workouts.. I literally had to find a solution for it cause I can not do my whole exercise routine. Just found out that the frog lift is easier doing in bed. I tried doing some leg raises and yoga in bed and it is more possible! Doing on the ground (or even on the mat) give my pelvis a great hurt.
Im gonna start doing this 2 times a day for at least 1 whole month, if it works then I’ll keep going. I’m gonna start today, but at night so tomorrow I’ll do it in the morning!

Does working the booty and hips help men for SI joint pain? I work out a lot being in the Army and Law enforcement but I never work glutes much or hips…i started having lower back pain that radiates to my groin and sometimes down the leg. My pain in my lower back is on the right side and the pain comes and goes..I think part of it is due to my glute med being weak…

Hi Dr. Can you figure out what damage I did? I was pushing a big heavy box forward on the floor. Suddenly I heard/feel a pop on the left butt. I felt a bit of pain after. It has been 5 days now. I can walk but with some pain. Have a hard time standing up from a sitted position.

This was tough! I had to take longer rest periods and I modified the jump lunges to to low squat reverse lunges. This was not a very long workout, but definitely killer, thank you!

Interesting that you guys did not refer to the clam shell lateral thigh abduction corrective exercise. I kind of enjoy your straight forward old school methods of progressive strenghening which introduces muscle confusion and addresses the glut minimus also as well as some ITB. All the new clinicians are pushing the clam shell side lying move and unilateral alternate one foot side stepping in place. Either way Trendelenberg gait signs, gait analysis, and isolated MMT should be done to isolate the progressive improvement of glut. Medius. Pelvic structures may need corrective manipulation or specific adustments ss well. However, without these strengthing exercises and gait correction the structural imbalances and altered function will return. Thanks for addressing this issue. Selah -retired chiropractor and L.M.T.

With the exception of my legs, this muscle is by far the most painful when I get my massage, especially when she goes round the perimeter where it attaches to the pelvis. Hopefully these exercises will help ease my massage! I just need exercises for my calves and quads because ooft do they hurt when she gets in there!! Thanks Bob and Brad xxx

Wow this workout was intense! I barely made it through. I’ve been doing your workouts for two months and I’m already seeing really good results.
Whew!! My legs were shaking!! Love that I was dripping sweat! I was a little disappointed because I was looking for less repetitive techniques, but it still gave me a good workout, so I’m not complaining.
A side note for you is when you went into the stretching section I was holding a forward fold for a good 40 seconds and finally looked up and saw you were in a totally different stretch. Hard to follow what you were doing at the end so I just did my own thing. Feedback
I wonder, why you DON’T pull your leg a little bit backward ( in extension) and then move it in abduktion (like 4-o’clock) otherwise you can work more with your tensor muscle then gluteus medius. Nice video:)

I love love love this routine and have been doing it for about a year even now and then when I need a good inner and outer thigh workout. My leg pendulums on round 3 are always wild.

The best thing about Heather is her technique just remains perfect no matter what, I am all over the place, but I really make an effort to follow her. I love these workout videos, they started working for me after just a few days, but I have some real problems with second exercise becouse I am getting tired too early. The max amout of these I can do is 6, then I am just too tired. Should I keep trying these or skip that exercise?:/

day2: i did it! only 1 time cause I’m tired and already did a pamela reif workout also.
day3: it’s not getting easier, I’m still struggling with the fast squats.. but my legs are really toned, also, i did the first movement a lot easier (i used to hate it). i also did a booty lift workout also from her channel!!

My doctor says I have glute adhesions. I have been watching videos about how to stretch the sciatic nerve because I have pain shooting down the side of my left leg. This might be a better set of exercises. What do you think?

Can tight and/or weak glutes cause back and leg pain & stiffness? My back and legs feel a lot better after doing these stretches, exercises, and using a massage ball on my glutes.
This was one of the most challenging workouts I’ve done in awhile! I had to add a minute of rest between each superset. I’m eager to try it again at some point and try to push myself harder through the plyo moves. Ouch. Thanks Heather!!

Hi, stumbled across ur video after watching dozens of videos about glutes and back pains, I always do my own research for anything I need or any information I need. So question for you? I have pain in my right leg glutes making my pelvis shift to the left, hurts like hell. Everytime I try to straighten it out, my pelvis tilts foward arching my lower back, so I’m constantly fighting to walk straight otherswise hurts like hell walking being shifted. I had same problem last year only worser, after I healed I didn’t work on my glutes, so probably strained something again. So is that gludias medias issue? From all the reaserch I did that’s the best solution I’ve coming up with

Sooooooo…I was feeling brave and extra strong this morning…I start off with a 40 mins run/walk in the treadmill then I felt so rammed up I jump right into this workout and complete it. Those pills are really working for my endurance. Thanks for another great workout!!!

Gonna challenge myself to do this twice a day for 2 weeks.
Day 1 (May 22, 2020): Easy peasy lemon squeezy:D
Day 2 (May23, 2020): I woke up with a light pain in my booty but it wasnt too intense that it would discourage me from doing this routine. Since I already know the moves from yesterday, I started doing the exercise during the preview. I skipped the 30s break, and I also did 45seconds kickback for each leg. I think I’ll start doing this modified routine from now on.:)
Day 3 (May 24,2020): done:)
Day 4 (May 25, 2020): done:) Been doing this routine along with Chloe Ting’s abs shred workout. I’m doing just the abs so I can do this still.

I have a question for Kelli I was into cardio like you and was doing it for an hour everyday. Since I found fitness blender I rarely do my stationary bike. I do your workouts 4 times a week and they are always cardio hiit of some type weather it be a 60min or 40min workout is this enough cardio? I really hope I can get an answer on this its driving me bonkers!lol

This is a really good starter routine, especially for me wanting to go light to moderate losing weight at 49 years old. This routine is so good, I may even keep the routine in place of my preselected glute exercises, several of which are done here.
