Video taken from the channel: Low Carb Down Under
Gluconeogenesis is a workaround for your body’s metabolism to get and maintain the energy it needs to conduct normal bodily functions. People on a low-carb diet have less glucose available for energy because less carbohydrate is consumed. In short, when someone is on a low carb diet, the amount of gluconeogensis is regulated by the body’s need for glucose, and not by how much protein you eat. If someone is on a low carb diet and they eat a lot of protein, it will not raise their insulin levels.
On a low carb, high-fat diet, you run on ketones and store glucose (in the form of glycogen). You can probably agree it’s more beneficial to store glucose (for muscle recovery) than to store up excess fat. This is why a ketogenic diet is amazing for weight loss, fat burning, and improving workout performance.
Gluconeogenesis is the term for when your body, in the absence of glucose, makes it all by itself. Most often this is done to ensure a steady supply of glucose to the brain, as your brain itself can utilize upwards of 100 grams of glucose a day. Because the brain is such a glucose hog, the body has several different paths to creating glucose in the absence of sugar.Subjects that did endurance exercise in a glycogen depleted state (low-carb dieters) primarily used gluconeogenesis for energy. (A surprising finding because endurance exercise is commonly fueled by stored fat.) In contrast, the people who exercised in a glycogen-repleted state (high-carb dieters) relied on glycogen for fuel rather than protein. The conventional theory is that gluconeogenesis defeats the purpose of being on a low-carb diet.
And, many limit the low carb diet daily protein amount to ensure ketosis is not affected protein being converted into fuiel. If you’re going low-carb you don’t want your bloodstream (your fuel line, so to speak) being flooded with glucose.Gluconeogenesis also plays a role in low-carbohydrate and ketogenic diets, where it allows us to maintain blood glucose levels despite very little dietary carbohydrates being consumed. A low-carbohydrate diet, in some sense, “mimics” low energy availability without malnutrition. If a person does low-carb, his or her glucose requirements must come from gluconeogenesis.
Of necessity, that means that extra protein must be eaten to account for the gluconeogenesis process. About 56% of protein can be converted to glucose, meaning the protein excess must be more than a 1 gram for 1 gram replacement of protein for glucose. It can be derived from ingested carbohydrate, stored liver glycogen and newly synthesized glucose (gluconeogenesis). We hypothesized that athletes habitually following a low carbohydrate high fat (LCHF) diet would have higher rates of gluconeogenesis during exercise compared to those who follow a mixed macronutrient diet.
However, in rats, gluconeogenesis has been shown to be stimulated when glucose availability was reduced during fasting or with a low-carbohydrate or carbohydrate-free diet; moreover, gluconeogenesis was increased by a high-protein diet (2, 3).39** Foster GD, Wyatt HR, Hill JO, et al. Weight and metabolic outcomes after 2 years on a low-carbohydrate versus low-fat diet: a randomized trial. Ann Intern Med. 2010; 153 (3):147–57. [PMC free article] [Google Scholar] Over two years, both low-fat and low-carbohydrate diets both promoted weight loss in a randomized trial of 307 patients.
Increased gluconeogenesis has been directly confirmed using tracer studies on day 11 of a very low carbohydrate diet (approx 8 grams/day) [29]. If indeed, 110 grams of endogenous protein is broken down for gluconeogenesis and re-synthesized, the energy cost, at 4–5 kcal/gram could amount to as much as 400–600 kcal/day.” O_O.On a very low carb, ketogenic diet, when carb intake is kept extremely low, a lot of protein is being transformed into glucose in the beginning, a process called gluconeogenesis. On a low-carb or keto diet, most people don’t need to count calories or fat grams. While keeping carbs low and protein within a fairly wide moderate range of 1.2-1.7 g/kg of reference body weight per day, most people can eat as much fat as they require to feel satisfied after a meal.
An additional reason for the observed increase in lipolysis (fat breakdown) observed in low‐carbohydrate diets is believed to be the use of fats for gluconeogenesis. When glucose is needed, lipases degrade fats to release glycerol, which can be converted to glucose.

In order to have 100g protein a day, how much meat should I have?
What a great lecture!!
After getting a cavity every month for a year, I told my young Palm Springs UCLA dentist last November 2019 with great confidence that I would never have another cavity or lose another tooth. He said nothing, backing away, thinking I was going nuts but I was confident because I had started keto in July 2019. So, last week, July 2020, I had full x-rays and the dentist examined my teeth and gums and said, “Hmm! Looks like you were right! Your teeth are good, no new cavities, gums much better….I think you’ve turned me into a believer.” Interesting.
Thank you for this presentation. My father died of end stage renal disease nearly 10 years ago, and this kidney disease was brought about about by being a type 2 diabetic. If we only had the information that we have today, with reference to the efficacy of low carb diets to reduce the very cause of his renal disease, he might still be here with us today. Moreover, his quality of life would have been so much better by not having to have endured regular exhausting dialysis, then getting a transplant which held up for about 8 years, and then falling back into regular dialysis again before his untimely death. Glycemic control, which no other diet besides a low carb diet can so quickly correct, is imperative for all people, especially those with renal dysfunction
Eye opening. Thank you Dr Bikman. My clients will get this video.
so glad i found this talk. i’ve been keto for over a year, and i’ve had higher protein consistently and feel much better than high fat with “moderate” protein. this basically confirmed my belief that the advertised “keto” is somewhat misleading
I’m not a doctor or scientist but loved this lecture. I’m back again to watch it. Once is not enough!!
Supposedly, Whey Protein is extremely insulinogenic…. Are you saying that Whey protein in the absence of carbs does NOT have this effect??? If so, you could drink a Whey Protein shake mixed with olive oil, and the insulin would not spike, and the oil would not be stored???
Folks get Keto Mojo Blood Meter you can do both your ketone blood readings and blood glucose. Great meter!
Dr Bikman’s Assertion about the brain glucose relationship is confusing.

To quote one study.
The role of glucose for brain function
Glucose (Glc) is the main source of energy for the mammalian brain, (a) Specialized centers in the brain, including proopiomelanocortin (POMC) and agouti-related peptide (AgRP) neurons in the hypothalamus, sense central and peripheral glucose levels and regulate glucose metabolism through the vagal nerve as well as neuroendocrine signals.. (b) Glucose supply to the brain is regulated by neurovascular coupling and may be modulated by metabolism-dependent and -independent mechanisms. Glucose enters the brain from the blood by crossing the BBB through glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1), and (c) glucose and other metabolites (e.g. lactate, Lac) are rapidly distributed through a highly coupled metabolic network of brain cells. (d) Glucose provides the energy for neurotransmission, and (e) several glucose-metabolizing enzymes control cellular survival. Disturbed glucose metabolism on any of these levels can be the foundation for the development of a large variety of disorders of the brain (see section on “Disease mechanisms”).

It is my understanding that Mice and Rats can not be made to go into Ketosis, can anyone confirm?
Point being they may be not ideal models for human metabolism study
Wow, wow, wow! An amazing lecturer, amazing visual aids, amazing teacher, amazing information. Thank you Dr. Bikman and LCDU!
I “got into” diet and health eleven years ago when I went paleo, I was obese. I’ve read probably 3000 quality articles about diet and health, most peer reviewed. As of late, add Youtube videos. With the information in this video, suddenly SO many things talked about out there in the community make sense. Why the carnivore diet works, way way more than just elimination of carbs.
It so happens that I’ve come to his final suggestions on my own, via my long, long winding road over the last decade. Being 73, I know to keep my protein up. My target minimum is 120g/day. That’s about 1.5g/kg BW.
(Quick alternate calculation: Take your ideal body weight in pounds, divide by 2. The result is about 25% more than the usual g/kg/BW calculation, but it’s probably safer. That’s minimum. Multiply by 1.2-1.5 for a good protein intake that lets you then eat more fats.)
Something I’ve never seen clarified is WHAT body weight? Obviously a 300 pound person shouldn’t be eating 270 g/day of protein. I presume that fat cells have no protein requirement, right? So, I use “ideal weight.” One could also use calculated lean mass and adjust accordingly.
I’ve been taking L-Acetylcarnitine sporadically, mixing the powder int scrambled eggs, for “egg”zample. Now it appears that it should be taken during my daily IF. I’m going to take some before I go to bed and again in the morning. Based on that one chart, my glucagon should skyrocket!
This is a keeper video that needs rewatching!
New man crush! This man is changing lives. It’s tragic how the entities that we look to as our health care providers and dispensing the worst information imaginable. We are systemically and intentionally being made into sick, drug-addicted, life-long patients.
Easting green, leafy vegetable solves the problem of protein by products
There have been numerous articles written that now debunk the notion that eating lots of protein causes kidney disease. The only people that still perpetuate this myth are those who have not updated their knowledge, or dishonest vegan activists who have a vested interest in demonizing protein because animal foods are richest in protein, and have it in its most bioavailable and complete form. As Dr. Huen showed here ( 12:00 12:20), if hunter gather tribes can eat large amounts of protein and professional athlete can eat many times the RDA for protein, and not develop renal dysfunction, then the notion that protein has a deleterious affect on the kidneys is flat out wrong. The myth about protein adversely affecting kidney health comes from studies where an elevated protein intake showed problematic outcomes for those with PRE-EXISTING kidney disease. To extrapolate from that phenomenon to assert that increased protein consumption will lead to kidney disease in a person with normal renal function is about as erroneous as claiming that because walking on a fractured leg exacerbates the injury, therefore walking for healthy people is bad.
i don’t understand why we needed the ketone body step. if we’re backed up with acetyl-coA, why transform it into ketone bodies, only for them to be reverted to acetyl-coA again?
So the human gut is a “compost pile”, depending on what you feed it and how its tended on how well it works…
I saw a recent video & Jimmy gained most of his weight back but still talking about dieting…
This is such a good video my goodness. This information is a must for those learning biochem and want to know the overall purpose of these starvation processes.
I’d like to know why one thousand and more people disliked this video. Dr Berry rocks
Keto 1 year. Got my ratios by water fasting under 80 but I have been very fatigued. I am drinking bouillon and taking magnesium.
Excellent lecture. Dr. Bikman broke it down simply for me to understand. I wonder, however as I get older, consuming more protein on a Low carb diet, offsets the diminish production of testosterone?
1-2g protein / kg…Really? So I don’t have to worry about eating 100gs of protein since I usually just have lower than 20gs of carbs?
Sorry, you got this exactly backwards. Two right things, incorrectly connected to each other. Stored glucose is not Glucose (gluco), newly (neo), created (genesis) by the liver out of proteins.
The crystalline lens of the eye is also made of cells that actually need glucose, because mitochondria would scatter light.
Dr. Bikman, what if you are very insulin resistant with acanthosis nicangrins (sp?) since childhood and nafld?
So basically because of the effects on the insulin/glucagon ratio either a keto or carnivore diet will still be catabolic, both are highly viable. Protein and Fat seemingly regardless of ratio, maintain the low ratio of 1.3 by being low carb diets. In fact it may push the advantage onto carnivore because of ensuring carnitine levels and glucagon levels remain high with the higher protein, and maintains lean body mass.
Meh. Eating animals is unethical thus I am for a high carb vegan diet.
I’ve watched this 3 or 4 times, and I learn something I didn’t see before (why, idk)
But I having been doing carnivore with zero carbs (or some days, perhaps
2 gms of carbs)
THIS…to me explains the results in seeing.
I was on keto for 6 months previously, and although I enjoyed ketones in the range of 2.0 and higher, weight loss was slower, than the rate of weight loss on carnivore.
While on carnivore, I’ve seen my ketones decline to an avg of.8 to 1.0
BUT..heres the thing I learned to day in this video. Consuming protein, while maintaining zero to low carbs Increases Glucogon..while insulin remained stable.
I’m seeing this by doing a self study on MYSELF today..
Measuring my blood glucose 30 mins after consuming protein..with a moderate work out in a fasted state at the gym in the morning.
Before watching this video again today, I was doing OMAD with carnivore..
and couldn’t,understand why I was so hungry during the 12th to 16th hr in my fast my Glucogon would slide and that would effect my ketone production basically, I needed to consume more protein.
I, for myself believe, that while on,carnivore, I cannot OMAD.
I ate once this,morning at 11 am
Then was terribly weak with no energy around 4pm
I ate again at 6pm (this is carnivore I’m eating NO carbs..moderate fat)
And watched my blood sugar every hour.
To my amazement (as this study revealed) my bs remained stable only increasing from 95 to 101, and then 1 hr after that, returned to 95 AND I felt better, I felt better BRAINWise..
I checked my ketone strips and saw an increase in ketones.
Thank you for this study yes, a k-nine study but very relevant. I feel like a light went on academically for me as I learned what was happening.
Before, the decrease in ketones from,OMAD caused me to consider abandoning carnivore, but after watching this video AGAIN and understanding more, I will continue with it and monitor my results.
I know one thing for sure, this is a game changer. A life style change. There’s no way I’m returning to a life if carbs..because the negative consequences of falling out of keto and gluconeogenesis, FAR OUTWEIGH the benefits of how I feel and the weight loss I achieve being in ketosis..whether high fat keto..or Carnivore.
Thank you Ben.
Great vid.
Does it mean that during the fasted state you can eat protein?
How is it possible to have in the same person after 18h of fast:
1.ketogenosis @0.8mmol/L in blood
2.hyperglycémia @ 4g/L of blood and hba1c @ 10.
3. 26 g/L of glucose in pee. 4L a day
4. hyperinsulenia
Points 2 and 3 means glugoneogenesis. Simultaneously ketogenosis, hyperinsulenia and glucogenogenesis?
This person has been diagnozed after this measures first Type I diabete, then type II diabete with insuline (slow and quick) needs, and now type II diabete without insuline needs.
I eat one meal a day my blood sugar keeps going up it takes two days of fasting to get my numbers down and low one hundreds I take a test it is 110 115 I eat it will go up 50 points from where I don’t know what to do
Since insulin is anabolic and keto reduced insulin is it possible to put on muscle on a ketogenic diet?
Sir, what is your opinion regarding Plant-based Whole Food Vegan Diet in the management of Insulin resistance and Obesity as against Keto/LCHF diet?
Goes to show you, pigeon holing doesn’t work. I have same DNA and native but never wanted meat/fat and diary does not like me, I’m a high carb, healthy strong woman who looks much younger. Raised in a meat eating family. My blood type says I’m a meat eater and I’m not.
Thank you Dr. Bikman, you make a lot of sense. I am a 72-year-old bloke with T2D and some coronary trouble. I found out that intermittent fasting combined with the ketogenic diet has done wonders for me. Your chat illuminates my meager knowledge.
100,000… 200,000 years is too many years. There really has to be more research on those numbers because the basis for those numbers are all shaky. Or else THOSE are lies being propagated blindly.
The pathway from oaa to glucose goes via cytosolic malate. Does dietary malic acid (eg a supplement such as sugar free cloudy apple flavour drinks) inhibit ketone production by sustaining mitochondrial oaa during gluconeogenesis and what are the consequences?
I really appreciate this lecture. Real food and protein. Thank you.
Excellent; Learned so much; presented in a way I will remember and can implement in my life!
that, 1-2g of protein/1lb of bodyweight…is that the gross bodyweight (water muscle fat) or just net muscle mass -’cause, let me tell you, that’s a lot of protein for my gross bodyweight-the result would be my capping out on protein calories alone or at the very least having the majority of my caloric intake from protein (I’m over 300 lbs:( )
How did science and miss that all along for decades? I guess Mel at the diner eaten chicken eggs and beef was right all along. That’s funny, because Mel ended up with a lot of heart disease cancer’s and other chronic disease.
A fascinating subject presented in an informative and entertaining way. Nice one!
So after all that preaching, now you’re changing from keto? I’ve always said it doesn’t work long term.
I’m confused… so Dr. Bikman is saying that there’s more autophagy with 24hr fast + STEAK (higher glucagon -insulin ratio) compared to a straight 48 hour fast (less glucagon spike even if lower insulin)?
Benjamin Bikman is at the cutting edge of the latest research into the way our bodies work. His lecture about uncoupled mitochondria via brown fat adipose tissue was equally enlightening. A must watch for anyone into low carb diets and anyone just interested in the physiology of nutrition mixed with endocrinology.
So if cholesterol isn’t the culprit to clogged arteries, then what exactly is?
My friend has three cats, all 3 are obese and have urinary problems and diabetes problems. Nice to hear the reason why! Thank you.
Bonjour.
Est ce que quelqu’un peut me traduire en français??
This is very helpful. Ive been trying to find the right diet plan for my pet human.
We do we want gluconeogenesis? I thought using protein for fuel was bad, ie using our muscles as glucose.
Amazing Lecture Dr Benjamin..
Love this Dr, I learned so much from
his presentation..
Thank you..
Dr. Benjamin Bikman What about the APO-E-Gene? People with APO-E-4 will die if they eat “any” fat. Most of the population have the APO-E-3/4 Gene, which medical results state that we should eat a “low fat” diet. Then there is the APO-E-2 Gene. It’s recommended that they eat completely different too.
There are studies now, on “cancer” patients using a DNA test to see which APO-E-Gene they have. Do you know anything about this Gene? Should we all be getting a DNA test to see which # we have before we embark on a KETO diet or LCHF diet? This is very confusing & scary.
It’s hard to find fat on meat in the store. The butcher’s cut it off.
Interesting talk, but I would love to see him address IGF-1 and MTOR, and how higher Protein stimulates them. 😉
Can someone without a gallbladder do a ketogenic diet? My sister had hers removed and she is constantly struggling with her weight…
This is truly a great lecture. Well written, well spoken, great slides and science that makes sense to ever low carber consuming more than 15% protein. Love the low carb down under channel and definitely want to see Ben’s lecture this year. Bring it on!
I know Its common to label substances as antagonistic( insulin:glucagon, copper:zinc, etc) But I think of them.as.working as a team.
❤️ Dr. Berry. So thankful there are doctors bucking the defunct system and PRACTICING REAL MEDICINE… which is by FOOD.
This was posted in Dec of 2012. As I type, it is now April of 2016. Have you filmed any updates?
I’m just the opposite I guess the longer I fast usually 22 hours fasting and very low carb carnivore eating my sugar will always be over 400 and when I exercise with it it goes much higher.. I can eat junk food every day and my sugar want get those numbers..
I am 79 and been on Keto since last Nov. Have lost 50 lbs. Went off statins last Jan. Went for labs yesterday and my cholesterol went from 212 in Jan to 311. My vldl is 16, trig 79, hdl is 77, ldl is 218, cholesterol hdl ratio is 4, hdl/ ldl cholesterol is 2.83. My Daughter is a nurse and she is worried. Can I get your opinion?
Still not comfortable about the build up of Uric acid on a all meat diet so I tend to lean towards fat as the main benefactor of the success story of a no carb diet
I love this guy. A real scientist on the right track. So generous with his time and efforts to help and so able to explain it clearly. This is the second stage of the revolution where professionals are taking over from the talented amatuers. A significant development.
I had to look it up, “erythrocytes” are red blood cells.
Thanks Ben, thanks LCDU
Thank you! Good information and cleared up some things for me.
8:44 You’ll be hard pressed to find a digestive system as similar to humans as canines. Nevertheless challenge it as you will.
Me: *takes him up on his offer, types in “digestive system most similar to humans,” finds pigs as the top result.
Fiddlesticks what your parents know, go back to what your grandparents knew.
Almonds substiting for almonds is great except for their high levels of oxalates. The other highest oxalate food is spinach. No oxalates in meat.
Source: Sally K. Norton, nutritionist.
Interesting segment on ketogenesis. Carnitine I think is only needed to transport long chain fatty acids. Also if supplemented, it needs to be taken with simple carbs to increase its bioavailability to muscles.
AFAIK the red blood cells, renal medulla and retina need glucose due to their mitochondrial deficiency, but their needs can be easily met by gluconeogenesis
It appears to me that if you go on a ketogenic diet purely for weight loss, then you don’t need that much extra protein. But if you’re on the ketogenic diet and you are exercising heavily, your muscles are going to demand more. Your muscles include your heart. And as you get older it’s even more necessary.
this is awesome lecture. I have one doubt. we are focusing on producing more ketones but that can lead to ketoacidosis. Any idea how to avoid it.
Good presentation but loses audio at about 33 minutes. Back at about 38 minutes.
Doc, you are talking about glycogenolysis. Glyconeogenesis is production of glucose from fatty acids or amino acids. Please check your basics please.
Why don’t you read or reply to comments? It’s good to communicate with your viewers, it helps to build a community.
very good explanation but the voice is annoying, not natural.
My question is how long should this flushing of fat from the liver via gluconeogenesis go on? I have extreme dawn phenomena daily since weight stabilized Oct 2019 on keto diet started in June 2019 even during 36 hr fast. So it has been 7 months now. BG upon waking 4am will typically be 100-120, then raise to 140-160 by 7am. no food. This is definitely not dietary glucose. When I eat at 11, it drops into 90s. Even with all this my A1C in mid 5’s. I have been assuming this is due to remaining insulin resistance (liver is getting the glucagon signal to make glucose, but not the insulin signal to stop) and fat adapted glucose sparing. Last insulin measurement was 10.5 with BG 121 so HOMA IR of over 3 (not good). Could I still be dumping liver/pancreas fat after this many months? When will it stop?
I’m on alcohol diet now I’ve lost two days already:-) But, no matter what I do, my glucose is always VERY high in the morning, unless I have a snack in the middle of the night. What is going on?
So what does it mean when im at 2.5 daily but i can seem to loose my gut
Even before this talk I switched my keto diet to be more meat based. Probably the main reason people on carnivore diets tend to get leaner quick.
Glycogenolysis is the biochemical breakdown of glycogen to glucose whereas Gluconeogenesis (abbreviated GNG) is a metabolic pathway that results in the generation of glucose from non-carbohydrate carbon substrates such as lactate, glycerol, and glucogenic amino acids. I guess Dr. Boz got these a bit mixed up… anyway good content. Thanks.
@DrBoz…………….I have a question, Why is it good to have cream for a keto diet but not milk?
Doctor Boz Your Awesome. On the other hand the intro music sucks carbs…lol
I am a bit late with this video.. But about 8 years ago, I had this very same information in my textbook.. “amino acids dramatically increase glucagon levels if there is no carbohydrate intake”.. And we don’t update our textbooks so often here (Serbia)..
When my mother (type 2 diabetic) eats a fair to good amount of protein(chicken or meat) her blood sugars are high the next morning. Is this because of gluconeogenesis?
Ok she got the wrong term but what she is saying is still relevant. It does bother me since but I still think there is value in everything she is saying. She should issue a correction.
Great video Doc!! Any plan on making your book an audio book?
Please address the topic of body temperature. My friend & I are on the Keto program. After 2.5 weeks she started getting very cold. Her temp just keeps going down. She is at 95.4 this morning. She lost 7 lbs the first week but has not lost any more (she’s maybe 50lbs overweight). She’s discouraged about her body temp as she figures her Thyroid is being negatively affected. Help!:)
Finally a doctor that doesnt appear emotional and physically emaciated!
The best article I found explaining Gluconeogenesis is https://perfectketo.com/gluconeogenesis/#3
Gluconeogenisis is not the using of stored glucose. It’s the liver making brand new glucose from glycerol and a few amino acids.
This a great topic. Question? Does a type 1 diabetic have difficulty with gluconeogenisis? Is pancreas disfunction related to the Gluconeogenisis?
Great info Love your work too bad people don’t believe the true science
I love this video. Seriously so concise and easy to follow. Thank you!! MCAT in 9 days ahhh…
I wonder if there is a translation of this lecture into layman speak?
so wait, the fatty acids are just supporting neoglucogenesis by converting the acetil-coa to energy necessary to produce oxalcetate?
A question, does ketones bodies are toxic? Like in a “ketogenic diet”, is that type of diet is sustainable trough life?
So many words so fast and felt like nothing important was said. Sure this could be explained. More simple
i can’t stand that voice of a fake little girl. Also, i just don’t know why you assimilate fasting to starvation. I am a faster, and i am never, never, never hungry when fasting. Ciao.
You made an important error. You said that the brain relies exclusively on glucose for energy. The brain can get a substantial amount of energy from ketones as you later say.
Important information.
For cat owners same as just for humans.
I loved his sense of professional responsibility, it applies everywhere really amazing video
But ketone crosses BBB through a transporter molecule(MCT1 & MCT2) not by diffusion.
During fasting or untreated diabetes, in the adipose cells, TAGs are broken down into FAs + Glycerol and the constituents enter the bloodstream and travel to the liver where FAs are taken into the mitochondria matrix where they undergo beta-ox. However, in the cytosol, doesn’t glycerol enter GNG to form glucose?
I still didn’t really understand why Acetyl CoA doesn’t contribute to gluconeogenesis after your explanation, I’m sorry! I just didnt see why it mattered that carbons were lost. If anyone else had this problem I found an easy explanation online:
“The problem is that acetyl-CoA enters the TCA cycle by condensing with oxaloacetate in the citrate synthase reaction. Therefore, you need 1 oxaloacetate for each acetyl-CoA added. Now, if the citrate formed goes on to oxaloacetate which is then removed for gluconeogenesis, there is no oxalocatete left for the next citrate synthase reaction. The reactions do not balance. Therefore, substances like AA’s are needed to replenish the lost oxaloacetate.”
So doing cardio in the morning on a fasted state is bad? I lose more muscle than fat? please reply
What a bunch of bullshit!!!! You are paid and bought!! The backbone of fatty acids gives a lot more glucose and the amino acids are a lot harder to process. The whole video is bS!!!!
Shouldn’t the molecule be more fat-soluble and not “water soluble” to be able to cross the blood brain barrier easier? 10:32
He is a professor at Brigham Young University. That is a private research university located in Provo, Utah and owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. So far about scientific credentials….
It turns out….that I learn more from this woman than my own teacher.
I have been watching a few videos on the metabolism because of my pre-disposition to diabetes. I have started a Ketogenic eating lifestyle and this really starts to bring home my understanding of the ketogenic lifestyle. BTW, I’ve never felt healthier since I lowered my carb intake. My energy level is awesome, I immediately lost 20 lbs and the fat around my waist. Thanks for the awesome info.
Saying pharmaceutical companies rather than “big farma” makes you sound far more believable. They are trying to make money just like you are with your book
A day of starvation?!? Nah! Nobody starves from a day of not eating! That could easily be a day of fasting.
So she is saying if we are fasting we are using protins as a source of energy despite we have saved all exstra energy as fat. I think she missed the point of starvation which is more like constantly eating lower calories then your body need insted of fasting which boosts you metabolism.
great explanation! but I have a question. At time 14:55, how are cells able to use/create this atp if it is not turned in to ketone bodies first? could you please explain this part? Thanks in advance!
There is a scramble I’ve messed with you guys might like. Nova Scotia Scramble…. eggs (scrambled) with 2-3 oz of wild caught salmon and an ounce of cream cheese. Try it!!! LOTS of fat delicious.
I eat a lot of grass-fed beef kidneys and minimal carbs… and my kidneys are much improved.
It is interesting to know that in some plants and germinating seeds there does exist the glyoxylate cycle which allows for direct conversion of fatty acids to to sugars like glucose and sucrose. They managed to get around that issue of not being able to convert fatty acids to sugars, damn, nature is crafty.
This is the greatest explanations for this topic. It’s very easy to understand.
Meat is not bad for us. But it is contadictory. I have seen many vegan people living completely healthy lives. All we have to do with our diet is by decreasing the carbohydrate intake and increase the protien rich legumes, soy and mushroom for our protien needs and increase the intake of healthy fats and cut out processed food from our diet. Humans can’t be carnivore for the ecological reasons. Since the human population is big in number, if we turn carnivore, it will create imbalance in the enviroment. We need to create some protien rich biofortified vegetables which can be grown quickly and provide us our nutritional requirements.
Fantastic interview..love this Doctor, the world would not have so many sick people if they would listen to these videos…instead they listen to the drug pushers,it’s pretty sad..I have done Keto for 3 months now with my hubby
We feel great, never better…we fast for 16-18 hours then have a 4-6 hour window of eating..
try moving the mic away from your mount and use a pop filter
So Acetyl Co-A could enter the Krebs Cycle as long as there is enough OAA, but in starving mode/diabetes OAA is needed to the gluconeogenesys so the excess Acetyl Co-A must go to the Ketons syntesys. Right?
I was having trouble understanding how fat can be used to fuel cells requiring ATP very quickly, as the breakdown of fat requires oxygen to produce ATP. Once you said that the body STORES acetyl coa in periods of long term fasting it all made sense!! the fatty acids have already been broken down in the liver and are ready to go and be transported to cells in the way of ketones! AMAZING… i am now 7 days into full ketosis and feel stronger and more energetic in the gym which is what prompted my question..
sorry, can anybody help me what are the diffenrences between normai acetyl coA (can do the Krebs cycle) and the 2C acetyl coA (cannot). i am confused, they are acety coA but one can and one cannot, sorry for my bad English.
But if I understand well, it’s kid of impossible t avoid protein bread down as it occurs in the first couple of day of fasting? So If you fast for 2 days or 5 days you’re still going to break protein, in the first two days that is. Is that a good idea if you’re an athlete?
(Indicative of why I am single in a world of vast amount of women) That is a women I would willingly go home to. Hot damn on her intellect
23 and Me sells your test information. So do all of the other gene test companies I know of. Beware.
I fast 24 hrs each day. I eat 2lb of beef at 6pm. It’s great to not need constant refueling. Exercise is easier now as well. Bowels are regular and tapered for those who wanted to know. Lol
Exellent explanation thank you I struggled to understand this bit for the last 5 years and your 15min video was brilliant
This is somewhat inaccurate video. Fat stores can be converted into glucose. It is 3 carbon end of fatty acid that can no longer be processed into glucose and is converted into ketone bodies (3 carbon, just like acetone). That is why individuals who are experiencing DKA have that acetone-like breath and can sustain on fat metabolism.
Very cool video, thank you! This helps me out greatly. I promise you I will do my best not to forget about those 2 lost carbons! haha
13:00
If the fasting/starving person is active would the ATP single stop the ETC Process?
I am not sure of the math but what is the Calories to unit of Acetyl-coA? also it would be wonderful to have the Calories to Ketones conversion as well.
10:32 sorry, but I thought water-solublity was NOT helpful for materials to cross the Blood-brain barrier.
Idl if Im naive or something. But based from what he is saying from the start. I think what he says is genuine. I wonder what South east asian ancestry diet is.
This is one of the rare instances where I sort of understood this better before watching this video…
I’m going to have to pay attention to this video…taking notes!!
Wait…are you telling my body catabolizes the amino acids in my muscle before my fats? I’m no bio major:(
Jimmy Moore gained game through weight loss and now that’s he’s once again obese he wants to completely disregard weight as having any bearing, or very minimal, effect on health. He’s irresponsibly preached to his 17 fans to ignore the scale, due to his own obesity, this is detrimental to there health. If he were a healthy weight that’s all he’d be talking about…
Friendly comment….It would be easier to follow your videos if you left the slide on the screen and just continued to talk. It is tough to follow with it flipping back and forth between a slide and then you, and a bright flash on the screen….just a thought.
I ask for a méating with dr. McDovgall with it’s diét of potatoés
We don t produce ketones from acetyl CoA. We produce KETONE BODIES!!!
Ketones and ketone bodies are two different things people are mistaken. Some ketones aren’t ketone bodies: pyruvate, fructose
Don’t the studies show the Masai people all have extensive heart disease on autopsy?
very useful and well-explained video:))))) thank you jasmine!!!

How are people able to survive without sugar? Can someone explain?
if we switch to gluconeogenesis during a starvation state, why is AMP (low energy metabolite) a negative regulator ( meaning down regulate gluconeogenesis)?
The side story you shared about your cats should be a separate video for all the cat lovers out there. (time mark 2:54 to 4:44). If this is true of cats, can the same assumption be made for dogs? My wife insist mixing rice with my dogs food, saying that their stools are too soft, more starch will fix it, but I know dogs and cats are pretty much 100% carnivores, so I fail to see the logic in feeding them more carbs, if anything, they should be eating 100% protein in my option.
Another wonderful presentation from a hard working, dedicated and knowledgeable professional. Aren’t we lucky….
Great work! I followed you on twitter for updates. Especially research about high protein intake on non-diabetic participants, such as glomerulonephritis or those that belong to other13%.
Around the 8:20 mark, she says that “acetyl-coA is the product of fatty acid synthesis”…I’m assuming she meant to say that acetyl-coA is the product of fatty acid OXIDATION..right?
Almost all “kidney disease” is due to hypertension and diabetes, two conditions that low carb diets prevent and cure. Argument over.
Avoid fructose? My diabetes doctor told me to juice fruuts daily, been doing that a year, now have NAFL disease, diabetes is worse and out of control.
Very interesting talk. As a complete ignoramus about this stuff, I have a probably stupid question.
If a person eats a relatively high-carb AND high protein diet, would the negative effect be reduced if the person kept the two foods separate?
E.g. a high carb meal in the morning, and then a high protein (and low carb) meal in the evening. Anyone able to answer this one?
I like having some greens in there though, cabbage, etc. When I just eat meat my G.I. is very unhappy. It’s fine for quarantine where I am always 25 feet away from a toilet, but it is scary during normal times.
How is this guy still promoting his lifestyle? I’ve seen a recent video of him and he looks even fatter. So one, he’s not really practicing what he preaches. Or two, what he’s promoting is a horrible path to follow. As a person who has been LCHF for a couple of decades now, I’m leaning towards option 1. Jimmy isn’t telling the truth about what he’s doing in his private life.
There is only ONE combination that works well for homo-sapiens. Fat Protein, NO carbs,

Ibuy the increase and so does Ted Naiman. Fructose CAN ONLY be process by the liver same as alcohol and NAFLD is seen. Ref. Lustig.
@khanacademymedicine so is fat adaption a myth? Does this mean going keto actually causes breakdown of aminoacids into glycogen?
If you consume exogenous ketones (ex. mct oil, red raspberries, etc), in an otherwise normal (non-carb restrictive) diet, which fuel source will the brain use?
Are there any genetic component or polymorphisms that would make the liver less capable of producing endogenous ketones from excess acetyl-coa?
Is it widely accepted that diseases of the brain (alzheimer’s, parkinson’s, huntington’s, etc) are likely the result of insulin resistance of the brain? And therefore ketone therapy may be helpful?
Kidneys stones are caused by high oxalate in diet especially from grains. Insulin resistance also causes it. Speaker please learn more. Sally Norton is a good source.
Great presentation Sara, thank you! So many factors to consider. I wonder how metformin affects the kidneys? What about sirtuin up-regulators like oleic acid or resveratrol?
Thank you for excellent information concerning keto diet and kidney disease in pt with diabetic.
Great Video! Just have one question: are amino acids from protein breakdown the primary source for gluconeogensis during the initial phase of starvation (prior to the switch to using ketone bodies as fuel)? And what role does lactate from red blood cell glycolysis or glycerol from triacylglycerol breakdown play in gluconeogenesis during this phase?
Anyone read up on this?
Thank you so much for this in depth presentation. Experts from the Low Carb community usually assure that increased amounts of protein are not a risk for kidney function but never explain why. You just gave us these explanations. Thank you!
Fantastic presentation, thanks so much. & Extraordinary how that low dietary protein.8g/kg recommendation came about, based on such low numbers & skewed gender. Most people don’t even know that it’s a minimum level, not even an ideal. Far out! (&Good on you Sarah for rescuing those two lucky felines!)
@min 1:00
“low carb diet, which I think should be redefined as a normal carb”.
well said.
Found reference to hyperthyroidism in cats over the last 40yrs. This would tie in with the introduction of dry manufacture foods for cats
Wow, what an in depth analysisso much of what is considered fact is in fact opinion and we should embrace knowledge as it unfolds instead of parroting faulty paradigms.
My body is not doing gluconeogenesis efficiently. I’m eating zero carbs and I keep getting hypoglycemia. What do I do
4:03 What was her point about excess carbohydrates leading to obesity?
Excess dietary fat will also lead to obesity. Even excess protein can lead to obesity.
This perfectly explains the claim (with some merit) of “Red Meat produces a larger Insulin spike than Pasta”:)
The Amino Acids in the Red Meat CAN & WILL cause a big Insulin response IF you are also eating a lot of Carbs in your diet 😉
the part about TG’s not being able to be converted into glucose is technically incorrect because Glycerol is indeed used in the GNG process
Good presentation. However cartoons go by to fast. Slower, please.
This is super interesting but can you please send my your study I want to go over it more
Thank you for this information my husband was a stage 3 went on a carnivore diet now its improved stage 2. Border line diabetic now normal hbp 4 pills a day now 2 half pills. Diet does matter.
Thank you Dr. Berry, since this diet about a month now and all your great information I have lost 10lbs I feel great and have so so much energy!!
For those of us, that are in ketosis, everything Jimmy has said is true. Every slide that came up I was thinking, “Yep, thats what happens”. From the feeling of well being, to getting enough fat to stop hunger. I’m coming up to 1 year of low carb and loving it.
Basicaly live on bacon n eggs and you will be healthier than any Athlete
probably one video i need to watch again and again till I get it!
Thank you for sharing this presentation with us!
Cheers & mabuhay from tropical Philippines!
40 minutes reading slides about his own experience. Bro-science at its finest
I’m an Intuitive Eater. I eat only when I’m truly physically hungry and stop when I’m comfortably full. Some days I eat 3 meals a day, some days 2, sometimes 1 & sometimes 5 snacks throughout the day. Sometimes breakfast, sometimes not. I eat a protein, carb & a quality fat with every meal or snack, bc this is what my body tells me everyday it needs and wants. I’m much lower on the carb and I eat mostly low sugar fruits and no sugar products. Again, this is what my body needs and wants. Just listen to you.
All this tech talk goes over my head. Tell me what I can eat and how much.
Moore says a green salad with grilled chicken is not a good Keto meal. No wonder Moore still weighs close to 400 lbs today in May 2019!
I saw the Autopsy of Alan Thicke his cause of death was from butter, too much salt and loads of sour cream…being the main focal points…yet, he smoked which was claimed in the next sentence and he did not warm up before playing hockey. There is so much confusion about nutrition. I felt terrible on the 5th day of Carnivore. I learned about oxalates perhaps I was dumping too many at once. I felt so great on it. I am starting again today. It’s not hard to go carnivore until you feel sick and body scares me into eating the carbs.
Just the opposite of “dumbed-down.” Thank you for increasing our understanding of the chemical processes going on when we consume food.
Yes I tried fasting and doing fasting. I went with 16/8 and loved it. I did that a couple weeks with 2MAD. Then I went to 18/6-20/4… I was okay but seemed like it was harder for me and I was hungry. Then I went OMAD and I crashed. I went back to 16/8-18/6 and 2MAD and losing like a mad man. I think people need to do IF on a gradual basis. You’ll know when you’re ready to move the eating window because you’ll go to make a meal and not feel hungry then push it back.
I have been struggling with the whole process of ketone production and use in Kreb’s cycle but this video has helped SO MUCH! Than you very much. Great content!
I’d rather do the breath tester don’t like seeing blood! My own especially.lol
My blood sugars have been hovering 110-140.I no for a fact I am in ketosis.the breath,no hunger, all signs are there including ketone sticks. So how is this possible?
How novel… treat the cause rather than the response… “Who Knew”…
70 Going On 100… the Centenarian Diet
As an American, I have to concur that American cheese is nasty.
Excellent information! Thank you. I can never hear too much about actual double blind nutritional studies. Too bad some of the participants will recieve nutrition that results in higher mortality.
On poultry: If you can find ‘real’ chickens raised outdoors on pasture, preferably heritage breeds or a crossbred like ‘Freedom Rangers’ will have more fat on them than the 8wk old confinement raised chickens sold in grocery stores. Bone-in skin-on chicken has a LOT more fat than the boneless & skinless chicken. ALSOduck and goose naturally puts on a lot of fat. Again, they should be raised on pasture. (Goose can be 100% pasture raised, at least during the pasture season.)
I’m curious about rice. You speak a lot about keto and or low carb, but also you lived in japan and talk about rice in the diet. Basically my question is, do you not eat rice anymore? What is more healthy, asian style diet with rice or keto/very low carb?
I don’t understand why he’s saying that he did all this exercise and he felt like some superhuman person but when you look at this guy the impression is quite the opposite? I don’t doubt his knowledge but his body just doesn’t show much. Maybe he was really really obese and he’s lost lots of weight. Mind you I will be doing my own transition to ketosis with advice or knowledge in mind. May let you all know how it goes as I’m fighting disease and so far my transition the way I eat is working. However, I now want to get much more rigorous and aggressive with my diet to loose the extra plateau body fat as I’ve naturally lost some. My body just literally unclothed a layer of fat quickly, it hasn’t put any more on right now it’s plateaued so that’s why I need to get aggressive with ketosis. I too have lost body fat to the point I can fit into some clothes I otherwise could not fit into.
So if his CT scan showed zero calcium plaque build-up in his arteries that means that this is basically a cure for atherosclerosis of the arteries?? This can be a conundrum considering that the substance, called plaque, is made of cholesterol, fatty compounds, calcium, and a blood-clotting material called fibrin. I guess it’s all about trust in ketosis because let’s face it the way w are eating now just isn’t woking and is disease causative!
good vid, basics seem ok, am doing roughly the same, lost over 35lbs already and gained muscle in same period. been on keto 3 months with a 14day holiday in america also inside that. I train 3 mornings a week and IF 16|8 on 3 days a week, lifting days I go with 14hrs, hunger dependant. this process def works, its simple and sustainable. also I do have veg and salad for nutrients, just be smart. I am on 4% carb 17% protein 79% fat, although I do leave a deficit as the fat is a maximum not a hit like carbs and protein. nice video xx
while im all for keto diets, im often appaled when i see these types. all processed foods and little to no plant matter. you dont have to avoid plants on keto damnit!
I thought it was (Gluconeogenesis. Gluconeogenesis (GNG) is a metabolic process of making glucose, a necessary body fuel, from non-carbohydrate sources such as protein (amino acids), lactate from muscle cell energy metabolism and the glycerol component of fatty acids. This process is important in maintaining blood glucose levels.)
I am sorry, I try to be open to all diets. I will stick with whole foods, plant-based. My stomach almost turned seeing what you actually put in your system on this diet. Zero sunlight, zero live information in that food. There are such wonderful high fat plant foods, there is no need for consuming the animal product, especially the butters and cheeses. I do not understand how owning measurement tools has anything to do with life and how does someone want to be alive while eating so much dead. Health and healing comes so very naturally on a whole food plant based diet. And then there is the ethical and environmental standpoint. I hope you live a long life! You seem to be a very nice man:)
Are you sure? Glucogenesis is the body making glucose from other forms of carbs, and gluconeogenesis is when the body makes glucose from non-carb sources, no?
You totally can do the study in living mammals to show that the brain can run on almost exclusively ketones. In fact, they did a study sometime last century on volunteers who’d just done a long water fast and then the researchers gave them insulin to lower their blood glucose. The volunteers felt fine even when their blood glucose got down to a tenth of normal. Meanwhile, their blood beta-hydroxy butyrate levels fell very rapidly.
David Duke??????!!!!!!!!! (36 New Paleo, Low-Carb & Health Blogs For December 2012)
Great to see all those test numbers and interpretation, people need to be informed about what’s what, not just rely on the doctor saying “your tests are OK”.
After talking about saving our proteins, she means ketone bodies right…not ketones?
Ketosis is not natural, not healthy, and makes your breath smell like shit.
“His cholesterol must be off the charts.”
You didn’t even watch the video or you would have saw the part where He reveals his lab work for his blood lipid levels.
This is scary! I hope people don’t believe that high fat is a good thing!!!?!? Fat damages your endothelial lining of the arteries, which is responsible for giving off nitric oxide (a vasodilator) and keeps the arteries and veins in a healthy state. Without it comes heart attacks, high blood pressure, strokes, embolisms, et al. This is a lazy way for fat people to attempt to lose weight. His cholesterol must be off the charts. How sad.

If we dont eat sugar and carbs at all, will our glycogen reserves will
stay empty or will they be replenished by gluconeogenesis?
i was surprised to see pineapple, as a “good” carb. Pineapple is considered a “medium” fruit on the glycemic index and most, would submit that one should consume it in small portions if you don’t want your insulin to “spike”
Thank you for making me understand all the principles all together!:) very well and good explained because sometimes one can get lost in so many reactions and not get the point finally but this video makes it clear all in one!:D thank you:)
Fruits and vegetables either are high oxalate (paradoxically low lectin) or if low oxalate then high in lectins. People have died from high oxalates and people become autoimmune with high lectin. Answer for these people, from an academic perspective is a carnivore diet.
do you approve the same diet for patients with CVD? thanks good doctor. i wish i could attend one of your seminars. unfortunately can’t.
Nothing about vitamin D in this video, just in the headline?
Dear Dr. Nader.
Please comment of the below article

Someone who is very under weight can do keto diet? By the way, your education is phenomenal. Thank you very much.
Dr. Berry saved my life! Live this man’s honesty and willingness to tell Big Pharma to take a hike! The body usually will cure itself if given proper fuel.
Phenomenal presentation Dr. Ali. My husband works outdoors and primarily, gets a lot of sun, to the point that rashes show up on his arms. Can it be the sun or perhaps the toxic lotion he wears? Also, if he is going to be in the sun for prolonged periods would you recommend a non toxic sun block? I hope you can advise. Thank you
Dr. Ali, thank you for posting these videos. I get a lot out of them. The videos really motivate me to make a change in my community. I own a gym in my home town in Oklahoma. Do you have any suggestions how a person who doesn’t have your credentials can convince people that a high fat diet is actually healthy?
Great video. btw, I watched a YouTube Doc that proved that 23andMe is made up entertainment. Twins were getting back different results.

7:09 answers why acetyl-coa/fatty acids can’t be used for gluconeogenesis
I’m mostly Italian. Is that why I love salad and mozzarella cheese? But I’m mostly eating meat these days.
Love his ‘needle that broke the camels back’, the sayings are, needle in a haystack or straw that broke the camels back
You are saying it not only takes low insulin to produce ketosis, but high glucagon, and carnitine? That is great information to have. I have seen so many debates on the effect of protein. This seems to explain so much. The body is complicated, and like most things, the answer is “it depends.”
During that lapse of audio at @ 33 min to just after 37 Min,,, we totally missed the answer to the question asked what high quality carbohydrates are…Can you POST the answer please and what ever was missed in the lost audio
My twin brother eats mostly meat, but he also suffers from gout. Is there a connection?
Holy crap. I’ve been doing a low carb diet for about 2 weeks, now. And when the doc mentioned ‘clearing your throat,’ it just dawned on me just how much phlegm production I haven’t had for the last week, or so. I mean, it was constant mucus all day long, and I hadn’t even noticed that it is now gone.
Tried to go low cal low fat diet. Was miserable and staving all the time. And then went low carb diet, it was amazing! I basically deflated! Weight was coming off and stayed off well!
Keep eating dairy Jimmy and you will have prostrate problems!
if you, too, are into mitochondria (as well as glycagon)… check out NutriGenetic Research Institute.
The next time my doctor wants me to take a pill, I’ll tell him, “you first!” Newbie at keto, love it. Now that the sugar and carbage is gone, food tastes amazing.
8:05 did he mean to say his heart burn got better with carnivore? It sounds like he meant to say the opposite of what he actually said.
yikes, so many people saying no vaccines and essential oils in the comments.
use your brain, and dont just parrot what other people say!
Fatty acids cannot contribute to the making of glucose but the glycerol back bone can once the fatty acids have been removed and this is what the body will do before starting to break down protein
for most of our existence we lived without cell-phones, or cars, or the internet. Do you think just because we existed without it for a really long time, we should give it up?
This general portrayal of doctors as incompetent, lazy and borderline sadistic is very dangerous. No, you are not more knowledgeable than a doctor for watching a 15 minute video and doing half and hour Google research. Listen and follow your doctor’s advice since they are way more experienced in health than you will ever be.
We owe Jimmy alot. This is an old video. Higher fat worked for him at this time but I dont think it is the answer for everyone. If you eat too much fat you are burning less of your fat. I dont think BG is related to ketone level. Heck a T1 diabetic will have crazy high ketones and BG in the abscence of insulin. Key is to be a fat burner. Now we know fasting and being in a fed state as little as possible helps alot towards this end. See Ben Bickman for great insights on what Jimmy is talking about.
thank you for all your great helpful videos,,,,,they really do help us in so many ways,,,,,,,
Dr Bikman’s explanation of how gluconeogenesis cannot afford be halted in a fasted or low carb diet, resulting in flat insulin levels after protein intake was excellent news. I had a question whether the same would be true if one consumed a whey protein isolate shake immediately following weight /resistance training. I have heard that this type of protein shake was so quickly absorbed that it caused a massive insulin spike. Would that spike also be mitigated in a low or no carb individual?
Love your videos. My relatives are from Norway, and ive been carnivore for 3 yrs now. Feel marvelous!! Will never change. Does Norwegian background have anything to do with my success on this way of eating??
I can kind of associate with heartburn. Whenever I eat meat alone, I do not get it and I feel great.
Dr. Berry, is there a way to contact you? I have a statin question.
Yes, but I consume 400g plus carbs, less then 100 grams of fat don’t eat any meat or dairy, eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and lose weight constantly and feel amazing so ya it’s a mess.
Her BIG Mistake of point 2 A] & @ 2:14. How then could people possibly lose weight? She is ONLY considering a glucose burning metabolism. Then goes on to describe the process of GNG ‘up to a day’ then later after ONLY ‘2 or 3 days’ [of starvation] @ 11:58 the process of Ketogenesis.
“After about 30 hours with no food, a great deal of this stored glycogen is broken down, and the body must then begin making glucose by breaking down stored fatty acids or amino acids from the protein in your muscles.” http://www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com/gluconeogenesis.html
Of course Ketogenesis through fasting is easier to achieve after Fat Adaption & your body is already producing Ketones & losing fat without liver glycogen depletion making point 2 A incorrect. In fact then, why would the body enter GNG if there is still glycogen available & ketones offer a more efficient pathway.
This talk was so technical, I reckon it can be considered CME for G.P.’s!
Didn’t folks from northern areas eat stuff like turnips, cabbage, etc. way back when?
So from what i can see from the graphs is that carb with itself is much better without protein (meat) and viseversa.. Now what i’m really curious about is what would the insulin scale look like if you ate some protein rich carbohydrate sources like beans that are similar in protein per gram of weight compared to meat, Is there something els in the meat that causes the extreme spike combined with carbs or would it spike just as much?
Lies come and go, truth ALWAYS endures. Dr Ken Berry is leading us back to health
Like a pastor, the doctor has an incredibly huge responsibility to do his job with ALL due diligence and humble respect. Thanks doc, I’ve known this like forever.
Question: if the body produces ketones, does it mean that the stored glucose in the liver is already used up?
Thanks a lot, Doctor! Amazing and informative presentation! Love from Viet Nam❤️❤️❤️
So glad there are people like you who are not afraid of the truth. Thank you for doing the research and publicising this information.
Dr. Boz please clarify gluconeogenis. My confusion is based on my understanding which mirrors comments by JMack and others. The process you are describing fits the description for glucogenesis not gluconeogenesis. This requires clarification.
hi guys, the greatest info that i’ve had was with the Fergs Treatment Crusher (i found it on google) I found it the most helpful resource i’ve seen.
Yikes-what kinds of doctors do you work with that don’t actually read research studies? And this person doing the interview says the “needle that broke the camel’s back”…the saying is straw, friend. You find a needle in a haystack and a straw breaks the camel’s back. Just saying.
Just like the medical schools do not teach the EndoCannabinoid system. They took a poll of all medical schools, and only 7% of the schools even mention it and yet it is the most important system in your body regulates homeostasis from conception to death. Also, turns on fat burning. Thank you so much pharmaceutical companies
I like the doctor but he is talking googly Guk to me speak in layman’s term not doctor terminology it is hard to stay on track with this guy
I think a missing piece here is BLOOD type that the guest is speaking about. Discover blood type diet foods for optimizing nutrition Dr. D’Adamo. And always(or as much as possible), natural, organic, REAL unrefined food.
I think a missing piece here is BLOOD type that the guest is speaking about. Discover blood type diet foods for optimizing nutrition Dr. D’Adamo. And always(or as much as possible), natural, organic, REAL unrefined food.
There’s one thing Dr. Bikman doesn’t show though… the effect of a high whole plant foods diet that is comprised of low protein plant foods (low or no animal protein) and low (but adequate essential omega 6 and 3) fat on the insulin:glucagon ratio. THAT’S what I want to see, considering some of the longest lived people in the world (the Okinawans circa 1949, Loma Linda SDA, etc.) eat/ate that way. I will say, however, that is is quite apparent from this lecture that the combination of high refined sugars and high protein is what actually causes insulin resistance due to the massive rise in the insulin:glucagon ratio from chronically eating that way. Add in the fried omega 6 seed oils, and it probably seals the deal on the obesity and type 2 diabetes epidemic.
Isn’t glycerol converted to DHAP which facilitates gluconeogenesis? Isn’t glycerol a fat?!
Hello, I’m about to come off a 30-day water only fast and I would like to know how if possible can I break my fast eating meat. I have been a carnivore for about two months before but then I had to stop due to the fact that I couldn’t get my hands on it, I felt great however which is why I’m going to resume eating that way. Any and all help you may be able to give me he is greatly appreciated.
@khanacademymedicine: @ 2:14 So, if this fatty acid (17C) is an odd number of carbons, can it still be able to contribute to the gluconeogenesis?
Please stay safe. Big Pharma doesn’t take kindly to people exposing them.
Thank you for this video! My triglycerides have went from 3500 to 300!!!
I’ve been a nurse for 40 yrs and whats going on now is sooooo different than in the 70s & 80s. I no longer believe in the system unless you need emergency surgery, Drs don’t have a clue about natural healing, go figure, it’s taught by those who have a vested interest……..aka….big pharma.
200,000 years ago?????? NONSENSE, and STUPIDITY, he probably don’t even know he’s GRAND-GRANDFATHER name!!!!!!! what about ADAM and EVE??
Humans have not been on earth for two hundred million years. But I love the diet, it works great for me. Thank you, Dr. Berry!
I was almost about to get confused before I could find such an amazing video…..You have cleared all the misconception regarding the integration of all this cellular respiration series.
I work as a dispenser in a pharmacy, and constantly sneak a piece of paper to clients who are caring for people with dementia, cancer patients and diabetics with the words “ketogenic diet” written on it, and tell them “research this”. If my pharmacists found out, I have no idea how this would go. I know these kinds of diets would help people, yet working in the public-facing medical field, I am trained to tell people to follow the standard food pyramid. I know it’s garbage and refuse to do it. It frustrates me that there could be prevention from all these diseases, yet as an NHS service, we are not supposed to advise anything that the government hasn’t condoned ☹
love doctor Berry. I just finished hiw book “lies my doctor told me” excellent!!

The logic about being dehydrated doesn’t compute.
Texas women could live off their fat for over a year sans eating.
I guarantee he is anti vaccine then if he researched this much. Anyone who does (literally everyone) who does comes to the same conclusion.
Dogs have digestive systems like ours because dogs are wolves that we started feeding 10,000 years ago, and in the time since then the ones that were healthiest on our food had the most puppies.
Quite sure that peoples of Northern Europe didn’t eat only meat. There are ancient ways to preserve plants over the winter. Although they didn’t have potato or rye 1000 years ago yet, there are many plants that are found in the nature that they most propably been eating. Not much carbs though. Very propably ketogenic.
O recently switched from keto to carnivore to try to get my thyroid inflammation quelled. I must say, I am doing MUCh better on carnivore. I never got over the cravings on keto, and toward the end I called my diet “cheeto” because I was cheeting as much as I was keting… lol! Thanks for your honesty in sharing your personal experience! Gave me a needed “go gett’em” this morning. I find myself sort of grieving the loss of my “freedom” to eat garbage… but I finally feel like I have gained the willpower to just bury that feeling and drive on!
All my cravings disappeared when I started getting most calories from animal fat
What toothpaste should I use so as not to be thrown out of ketosis?
