Sleeping the Night Before the Marathon Some runners have trouble sleeping the night before because they’re anxious about the race. Take steps to try to reduce your pre-race anxiety and get some rest: Lay out everything you will need the night before the marathon.Have your pre-race breakfast already prepared and in the fridge before you even think of hitting the sack, this way you won’t wake in the night having second thoughts. Too many runners, whether they are newbies or elites, have tragically fallen victim to the mistake of trying new foods either before (or during) a race.
Don’t be one of them.THE BOTTOM LINE: As long as you’re not chronically sleep deprived, getting less sleep than usual the night before a race doesn’t seem to have any significant consequences on performance. Not.

I really try and focus on getting a good night sleep all week prior to a swim. It conditions me for falling asleep early that night.

I.Here’s a scenario a ton of athletes experience, but few talk about: The night after finishing a big endurance competition or a long and strenuous workout, you lie awake in bed or toss and turn despite being thoroughly exhausted. Your sleeplessness may be compounded by feeling like you are radiating heat or you can feel/hear your heartbeat.
After all, you don’t see elites at Broadway shows or midnight movies the night before the New York City Marathon. A new study supports the don’t-sweat-it.

Sometimes when I feel anxious (which is a lot at night) I do a quick 15 minute workout to burn off all that nervous energy. it works about 1/2 the time. You say not to do that though. Can you give me a different option to try? I’ll try to cut down on the coffee too, but for a whole week?? Was that a correct statement the 48 hours? I have Bipolar disorder and when I get manic I cant sleep. I went 4 days straight with no sleep once. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. In my school here in Philippines, doing at least 4 assignments is the culprit for lack of sleep. So it’s not a mystery why my memory and mathematical skills declined a bit.

You dont need to do all that. All you have to do is watch the same thing every night when you lay down. Choose a dvd and literally watch the same thing every night. It takes time but eventually you wont be able to stay awake for more than 10 minutes watching it.

I havent been gettimg sleep at all and I don’t know why. I have been taking medicine for nasal congestion but I don’t think that’s the problem because, I’ve used it before. I also have a sleep schedule. I don’t eat before bed. I do drink a glass for warm milk before bed though. I have an app on my phone which makes my screen red for sleep time. Should I go to my doctor?

My (non-professional) advice for how to relax and get to sleep is warm cup of milk, book, no phone or computer. If you still can’t get to sleep go for a wander around your house and get a glass of water, just chill for 15 minutes then go back.

What I’ve noticed is you need a sleep pattern go to bed at the same time each night and wake up around the same time each day. Having a job to go to really helps with this cause it forces you to be up so your not late for your job. And by the end of the week at your new job you’ve already trained your mind and body to sleep at this time wake up at this time. The human body usually only stays awake for 14-16 hours and the reaming 8 hours should be your sleep time that’s a 24 hour day roughly. You should not require any sort of naps during the day if you do need a nap that’s just a sign you haven’t got enough sleep or quality sleep. My body and mind are trained so good as soon as I get that tired feeling and my head hits that pillow I’m out until I wake up. If it’s hard for you too go to sleep first thing you gotta do is get your body and mind on a sleeping schedule

I have sleeping problems from the age of 5, I always had trouble, I woke up daily at 6:30 am, played hard all day, never went to the bedroom in the day, like indians do, never have big meals at night, it was the rule of our family still I have problems sleeping
