General Weight and Fitness Training for Sprinters General Preparation. The general preparation phase should provide all-around muscle and strength conditioning in the Specific Preparation. In this phase, you will focus more on the development.Incline Press 3x8-12 Superset: Dips + Push-Ups 3xMax each Pull-Ups 3xMax Single-Arm Dumbbell Rows 3x8-12 each arm 3-in-1 Shoulders 3x15-20 each exercise Superset: Biceps + Triceps 3x12-15 each arm.Part I: Training in the weight room.
Start building some sprinting strength by incorporating these much-needed movements. 1. Power Cleans – 5 sets of 5 reps. 2. Barbell Squats – 3 sets of 6.Sprinter Weight Training Needs: Injury Prevention You can’t accelerate fast if you aren’t healthy.
Muscular imbalances can lead to injuries, so a full-body approach is necessary.Sprinter General Preparation Weights 1. Do 4 sets of each exercise. 2. On a light week do 10,10,9,8 On a medium week do 10,9,9,8 On a heavy week do 10,9,8,8 Monday 10 9 8 Power Cleans Bench Press Seated Leg Press Seated Row Lunges Wednesday 10 9 8 Power Cleans Incline Bench Press.Sprinting is a difficult combination of aggression, relaxation, technique and efficiency.
The 100 meters is sometimes labeled as the easiest most complicated event in sport! And contrasting bodybuilding, gaining too much size can become a negative. Generally speaking world-class sprinters are not that large, anywhere from 155-180lbs.To build speed and power, weight training for sprinters should incorporate four types of lifts static, Olympic, ballistic and isolation. Static lifts strengthen major muscle groups in the butt, thighs, shoulders and chest in a slow and controlled way and include bench presses, hang cleans, squats, weighted lunges and single-leg squats.
For all intents and purposes, general work is basic weightlifting, squats, leg press, deadlift, bench press, and the myriad of auxiliary circuit training means out there. Light team sport play is also considered general work, and is critical for the long term development of dynamic athletes in some capacity, particularly jumping athletes.Because weight training increases power output — necessary in speed training — weight training is imperative for 400-meter athletes to increase their strength and overall speed.
A stronger sprinter is a faster sprinter. In the context of T&F sprint preparation, nearly any and all conventionally understood weight training must, necessarily, classify as a general exercise (although, from a strictly neuromuscular perspective, there are weight training exercises that represent a class of specialized exercises up to the point in a sprint when the muscle contractile velocities become so much higher than what any conventional weight work allows).Incorporating sprints into your exercise routine is an efficient and effective way to train your anaerobic system, burn calories, and improve the lean muscle mass in your legs. Here are sample.Goal-Oriented Sprint Workout Formats: Sprinting for Fat Loss and VO2 max.
Sprinting in high intensity interval training (HIIT) format is the most commonly utilized type when paired with a traditional gym-based strength training routine.Good reserves of muscle glycogen are critical for Olympic sprinters so weight training, plyometrics and optimal nutrition are necessary to obtain world class results in the 100 m, 200 m and 400 m races. Special emphasis is placed on training the quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings and calves along with a strong core to help stabilize movement. The heavy strength training group improved their average power for 5-minute all-out efforts (3.3 percent compared to a 5.7 percent improvement among the sprinters.
Sprinting athletes commonly perform blocks of heavy strength training before progressing to blocks of high-velocity strength training. This approach can be seen at various levels, whether.

Just one question how many series you have to do each exercice and how many times at week?
You forgot to mention mobility and stretching. The bigger and cleaner your motions are the more speed you can produce. Its just simple physics. I’d say technique and mobility is way more important than strenght.
hey Chris, would really like to know more about the dorsiflexion series you were talking about. much love
I saw the video and I like you very much those exercises of power and strength and poly metrics my question is is this one I have a son that plays football is 15 years old is not so fast when should I apply those exercises before training football or after training Football and which days surely do strength exercises and Polly metric exercises all in the same day or different days what do you recommend? Thanks for your support Best regards I hope that you can help me I want to make my boy fast
How about just forget heavy lifting? Christian Coleman doesn’t do any heavy lifting and I bet if he started lifting heavy it would not improve his starts or acceleration. There is just no transfer from lifting to sprinting unless an athlete is exceptionally weak.
Excellent
. What about using only kettlebell and bands for working out, basketball.. I don’t have Access to barbell
Just want to say that this channel is awesome. I’m a trainer/coach as well in the athletic performance industry and I think this channel is a great resource for creativity and education on training methods. To anyone watching these videos I highly recommend getting educated on the things they’re actually talking about. Understand it. These videos have taught me, but more so SUPPLEMENTED, the things I’ve learned from school and certifications. These videos are awesome, they’ve helped guide my programming and increase my performance as well as my athletes. Keep it up my man!
Dude, where are these gyms? An affordable one of these would be a dream come true.
At this level, at Loughborough Uni, you’d think he’d know better than to be performing explosive weight training, rowing etc. in huge padded heel trainers.
I know you are not a weightlifter. And you do weightlifting movements as a supplementary to sprinting. But it might be worth having a coach to teach you for technique. at the moment your technique is very bad.
You mention “Dorsiflexion Series” as part of the warm up. Where is this material/video? Thanks!
When I get faster in sprinting, My stride cycle changes a bit instead of proper cycling my coach tells that I start pounding the ground and move in somewhat “thigh switch” drill/less cyclic manner. Anyone know what I can to do combat this?
To anyone watching this video, do not perform olympic weightlifting lifts (clean and jerk, snatch) without proper technique, go see videos about olympic weight lifting and compare it to this video, you will know what im talking bout. The video is very informative tho.
Do sprinters half squat on purpose? i guess they don’t need to do a ATG squat because they don’t sprint in that position
I need to work on keeping my speed for a longer period of time what should I do on the track and in the weight room
Yeah yeah yeah bodybuilders… We know… It aint a squat unless you kiss the floor with your sphincter.
hey thank you so much for this video. I just like to sprint for fun but would definitely love to get faster. If you are considering making a program I would definitely pay for it. this would be a fun challenge. thanks for the informative video
hey mart muru how much is asafa powell front squatting and cristian hang power cleaned
When you say when you do 30’s or sleds, then in the gym you hit similar ranges of motion etc. Do you mean that same day, like track morning gym afternoon or gym the day after??
Is it good to hit the gym day after speed day at the track??
Thank you very much, much love from Croatia, Europe
Damn, you look fast:O
What are your 100, 200 and maybe 400 PRs? (I’m not expecting world champs times of course, but they most be some seriously fast ones:P 😉 )
They don’t do a full squat on purpose? I mean squatting half way could be bad for your knees, and I doubt any sprinter would want that. squatting ass to grass would definitely have more benefits for them imo.
Im training for better acceleration for soccer, are they’re any key exercises that focus on acceleration specifically?

Question. I want to increase stride length as I’m a master runner. I know what exercises I want to do, but how many inches in stride length is it possible to increase on a program over say 6 months? Advice welcome
Fantastic video very helpful you suggesting performing each program for 2 month consistently??
Although track cycling is not your speciality, I would appreciate a brief comment on how applicable you believe your training programmes would be to this discipline, in particular what plyometric exercises would be most beneficial for track sprinters. Many thanks in advance.
By the way, that power snatch was very bad. I wouldn’t suggest someone continue with that unless they like injury.
The workout he’s doing at 1:55 be very careful on it because I messed up one of my wrists bad so just be extra careful and maybe wear wrist wraps or tape them
Hey thanks for the exercises and advice I’m going into high school 9 grade can’t wait to go into track since I’ve been running fast since I was 5 years old and always kept running and learning more about track to get faster and reach my full potential and I’m 15
WHEN YOU MENTION, AT 13:15, IN THIS VID, “How do I find out “WHAT” kind of athlete I am? Note, I am NOT an athlete:) but to become awesome, ya, I will work for that!!!
Hello, very useful information. However, I wanted to ask, are there any differences when you are doing weightlifting in a separate day? Thank you
Thank you, sir. Invaluable advice. You have helped me understand WHAT I should be doing with weights.
It would be awesome if you do a begginer video, like somebody just starting out because some of the power and one leg excersises seem like someone new to this would get hurt.
It’s amazing how bad elite sprinters are at lifting. Do coaches/trainers not care, not know…what is it? Athletes visiting Westside wouldn’t get away with this garbage technique. Usain Bolt is cleaning 135lbs with terrible form. I am just a nobody consistent lifter and am considerably stronger (I’ll leave out Ben Johnson, since I’m not even going to attempt to compare a legitimate IPF squat to whatever the heck he was doing…bounce half box squats?!).
Great video man. Just wondering, how often should you do these exercises in a week to like avoid injury and allow recovery? Also which of these exercises should I start with (I’m a beginner who really wants to get fast af)
Ur take off needs to be a bigger jump off the blocks for a good sprint, you’re basically “stepping off” of the blocks
So 2 months strength training, 2 months something else and then sprinting? I was hoping for a weekly routine where I sprint, strength train and do plyos in the same week. My problem is not knowing how to do each without overtraining. Should I strength train on monday run on Tuesday, how many days should I sprint and how many do I lift??
a lot of those squats are seriously dreadful tbh
expected more
Can you do some videos on doing the toe drag start technique?
In short, what sort of stuff do sprinters train in the gym in order to become faster…?
How about as apposed to pulling a sled, pushing a sled? Would that be just as beneficial?
Man you Are a legend thank you for your tippppppssss ❤️
what do you think about that the body only uses it’s full pontential (maximum motor unit recruitment) when there is enough stability to protect the body especially the spine. So during most heavy barbell exercises the prime movers are never fully activated if there isn’t enough core stability. We experience this best with the glutes. The body just shuts down certain muscles (especially glutes) if there isn’t stability created.
Im playing soccer, 3 practices and 1 game on sunday, saturday is my rest day..
But do i go to much to the gym to lift, 3/4 extra, can this lead to injuries?
I have now a damn groin injury, that wont go away
Found this channel a couple of months ago, simply excellent content.
2 gym sessions, 3 track sessions and 1 yoga session..what do you do the remaining time? I mean, for some it’s already a pretty big schedule but aren’t you a pro?
Hey,
I was pleasantly surprised to see me included (staring at 1:02). Thanks for the shoutout!
I can attest that being strong and powerful through lifting made me into a professional and Olympian.
If any of you watching want advice or programming, I’d be happy to help out,
Thanks again!
Jared Connaughton
funny how all these clowns lift heavy as fuck but the fastest of them all only powercleans 60 kg lmaoooo
Should i do plyometric after weight training or alternate days. Can u pls give a organised workout plan for an intermediate sprinter. ie weekly and daily workouts.
Hey Cody. Hope you’re well. Currently training for N.Ireland Masters M50 100 m to win. Thanks for all your videos bro. God bless.
Hey bro excellent video I Coach Explosive speed etc these days mainly working with my son who’s reasonably competent with these types of movement exercises but I gotta say you’ve put this together excellently and it’s good to be able to refer to this for the exercises we are using during our progression.. thanks sharing your work
Would you say this workout would be more suited for 55-100 meter sprinters and football skill positions rather than a 200-400 m runner?
I am confused so you shouldn’t do squats and bench press because it is not strength specific?
The real training comes from a 30ml bottle of beetroot juice….:)
Question: Why do peoplw that lift let the weight fall on the ground?
Is it to avoid curving the spine when you put it down?
@ 1:55 his form is terrible on RDL. Going to get injured with that terrible arching.
Some of these were really shitty! They should have oly weightlifting coaches…
Cool vid just made a video of some training clips getting ready for track season
How do you know all this information? Have you done a degree in sports science/ physiotherapy?
Forgive for my ignorance but how does benching help with the sprinters explosiveness and speed. I can understand the box squats, regular squats, deadlifts, power cleans, and etc etc. But what does bench contribute? Not trolling just really curious. Thanks
Thanks y very much for the inf. If you don’t mind iv few questions. Iv some qualities of a long or medium distence runner but I’m crazy about sprint. even though i enjoy beating myself with very hard sprint workout I still hv low times
Found quarter squats really helped my start and acceleration.
Yes, there is some very good advice here…BUT, a lot of this stuff is for more advanced athletes. You do some of this stuff as a novice/beginner and could easily mess you up. So go easy.
Hi, where in a sprinters program should general training be like deadlifts and squats be in? How about these more specific movements? Should sprinters always perform sport specific exercises even in the offseason? I heard several training theories that on one end you want to do work that would benefit your event with specific training but advocates of general training say that burnout occurs and undulations with specific exercises would cause less returns. What is your stance?
If you’re going to comment on their lifting technique pls also include the Olympic events you competed in, medals won, etc. Thanks.
Hey there, have you seen Fat Blast Furnace? (check on google) You will discover the serious crimes we commit against our bodies. With Fat Blast Furnace, you will discover how to shed fat quickly.
Still dunno how to clean. Can’t place the shit on my shoulders
Expected to see more posterior chain training as in deadlift and its variations, instead they were mostly training squats that work primarily the quads, weird because the quads work better for vertical propulsion (jumps) than forward propulsion as in sprinting.
Thanks for all.I have increased my powerlifting ability ten-fold! Instead of lifting heavy beer cans all day, I now am able lift and clean my dick with extreme explosiveness and a quick continuous realease. I also have benefited in faster start times when I have to “run” to the liquor store. Much love.
I wonder if it would be wise to just completely neglect the upper body parts that aren’t necessary and just build the legs so you’ll be lighter overall and potentially run faster. P.S. I don’t actually think it’s a good idea, I’m just curious if it would work
This Video is full of motivation I love it.
Anyone who runs low 10s is a badass in my eyes.
Well done to all of them! Everyone single one.
Hey Mart who is the guy who drops the weight and starts throwing the f bombs lol
I just doing 7meter jump..but I don’t all training schedule
Can someone tell me how the exercise Usain Bolt is doing at 2:29 increases your speed?
That first guys shoes though!
Asics TOW727
Damn, looks like my AdiPowers are taking a back seat.
Great video Chris. Been doing squats with bands since they are recruiting more type2B fast twitch muscle fibers. Can now run a 40 in a 4.4!
Someone please help I’m a Basketball player who wants Olympic speed but I can’t do any of the featured workouts due to patellar tendonitis. I’ve had it for over a year and is becoming extremely painful in both knees now. I have two seasons left in my high school career and im running out of options…
1.23.
Amazing..simply…amazing mobility. Barely any buttwink.
why they are only doing front squats in this video or it’s just a coincidence?
This is very true. I was an athlete until grade 8 and ran the 100m in 13.1 seconds which is not too bad but I was capable of so much more. I stopped doing any sports that year because of an injury and when I was out of school I started going to the gym desperate to build the physique I’ve always wanted. I wanted to become as big and strong as possible and I ate a lot of meat and healthy carbs. The thing is the way I was training was for performance and strength as I knew it was the best way to gain muscle. My deadlift shot up and at 181lbs I tried my first clean ever and got a 178lbs clean on that same day. I always knew I was very explosive but I never had access to a gym until after high school. I continued training and when I was a year in I thought it would be good to incorporate sprinting into my training routine. After 2 months of sprinting twice a week and doing box jumps, sled pulls and explosive movements with barbells I could feel I was becoming really fast and my core was the strongest part of my body. My glutes were so activated when I ran it just felt amazing. I went on vacation and we did pencil boat racing which is really hard work. When we came to a sports field there one day I saw athletes running and I thought it would be nice to join them and see how fast I was. I knew I was fast but I never took my times because no one ever trained with me when I did sprints. I was really excited and it felt like I was competing.. I warmed up and my first run was 11.7 in the 100m but I could feel I wasn’t warmed up properly. I still couldn’t believe that was my time though. We rested a few minutes and some other guys joined that looked really fast. We talked for a while and to my surprise this one guy told me he’s the fastest in his high school. His best time was 11.3 in the 100m and I thought ok so I will definitely not win this race. I could feel my glutes were fired up after the few minutes rest and I felt very powerful. The coach gave the signal and I just shot out from everyone and halfway through I knew I was going to win because my glutes and core were so activated. I won with about 3m to the fastest guy in his high school and my time was 11.1 seconds. The coach was really impressed and asked my age which at the time was 21. I was amazed but I knew exactly why I was so fast because I was relentless to become as strong and explosive as possible for about a year. I had muscle memory as well from my younger days and good genetics. I thought I was too old to waste my time in sprinting because most athletes in the olympics were sprinters from a young age and were already going sub 11 at like 18 years old and I decided to focus on my career and still go to the gym. I reached my goals the next 2 years and gained a lot of strength and size. I’m currently weighing 246lbs at 23 years of age. The thing is I realize now that I could really have tried to reach sub 11 and maybe even sub 10.5 if I put all my focus into it. I wish I had good coaches when I was in high school which trained me in a gym and on the track because I would have been at the olympics at a very young age. I decided that I am going to go for it again at the age of 23 and this time I will very serious. If I reach sub 11 in a years time I will be very happy. My time now is 13.7 which is really slow but I know I will cut it down to 12 in about 6 months. My weight has to come down a lot but I will do it slowly to prevent injury. I am much stronger and more explosive than I was and all I need to do is improve my form, regain my muscle memory and train hard and smart. This is a very long comment so not a lot of people will read it but I just wanted to tell my story
Can someone do the hassle and explain to a newbie all the workout names, and what they are helpful for and how to do them?

Which weight training exercises are major for sprints and jumps
You said you run 3.9 in 30m, i’m curious what’s your PB in 100m? Thanks for the reply in advance.
Can I use this for training marathon…. I have ran few half marathons as of now…. Should I train more for power or strength…
I clicked on this video to make sure my eyes were not deceiving me. They didn’t. This nigga really was front squating 315. Im done wtf
0:56 look at the guy seated shrugging the foofoo dumbbells in the back.
he’s gonna look like Bane. some day.
Hi Cody
Firstly great video.
My son is 12yrs old running low 12 sec 100m’s and is an Australian nation level sprinter. Is it worth him starting a light weight program? If so what exercises would you recommend?
Cheers Bob
Im 18, 161cm 55kg.. my PB in 100m is 11.43s.. is it possible that i can achieve a faster speed as my body is short.. and what exercise should i do

what is a step by step workout for long jump and 100m shoot.plz
can anyone tell me the name of the workout usain bolt is doing?
Starting at ca. 8:00 your runner has his head down as he sprints = his center of mass is slightly in front of his hips. Michael Johnson wouldn’t like that.
Hey Chris, i saw at 3:38 that you didn’t go full depth with the squat? When should i go deep and when not?
0:22 Elite sprinters doing a useless variation of bench press (oh well bench doesnt matter, they’re sprinters, lets see the squat!), QUARTER squats, 1:55 and crossfit?
The best replacements for those squats are rack squats, at least the technique is still there in the squat movement and but the reset and technique will be cleaner. Because Explosive lockout or not, the consistency is based on the perspective of the athlete which as anyone knows is not always the same, that is why rack it up and you will know that consistency is there for technique, depth, lockout and speed.
Sprinting is a gift from God. I have had some of the best moments of my life in track. And sprints in Football, wrestling etc. Nice video.
1 is sprint only for talented people
2 I’m good at stride frequency but with short stride length how to fix that knowing that i tried so
Amazing, informative video. The breakdown and structure was on point. Just started following you on IG. Thank you!
Some of these guys are elite sprinters, didn’t recognise the others????
What about doing plyometrics and strength workouts at the same time? I had a coach who used to train me with the weighted jump squats right after heavy squats.
You got any tips you can offer for overcoming the fear of sprinting.
Pulled my hamstring in late April of this year. And started playing soccer again but I’m scared to go full 100 on a sprint:/
Excellent instruction thank you for putting in on that effort
Please advise
. Lunges or Rfess eccentric 5or 6 sec pause at bottom with paired with low level single leg plyos..

Hey man, great video! would you mind if i made reference to it in one of my own?
forgive my ignorance but why do weight trainers always seem to lifting weights too heavy for them can’t they squat with a comfortable weight where they can go up and down without the help of a partner/trainer
Hey Cody I’m a soccer player and I’m starting season next week. I want to do weights just to mantain strength and Plyos for power (I just do Broad Jumps). Is it okay to do just one day of weightlifting and one day of Broad Jumps alone? Or should I do them together and more frequently in season? And last how many sets of Broad Jumps should I do? I always do sets of 3 or 4 reps
I am 46 years. My timing is 12.23 second.
My problem is with starting.
Please guide me
I don”t think so, i never do this exercises but i run 100m 10,24s 0,1 and im only 20 years old.
guys what is the exercise at 0:52 good for? how does this improve your sprinting? thx
What differences would you make in training for speed vs jumping?
I’ve watched a decent amount of videos to exercice for speed, and they all rely on explaining exercises on exterior visible muscles. But the one most important most powerful muscle is invisible, and no one talks about it, except in a video comparing Powell to Bolt, and that muscle is the Psoas, which attaches the upper bone of your legs to the back, and who is responsible at what frequency you can lift your legs against the increased force which opposes your movement the faster you go.
Wuahhh man!!! I understand now why they push so strong on first 40 meters.i am a 10.80 sprinter.
I’m training to beat the current world masters athletics 100 m record ( 11:46 secs ) for male 50..Thanks for all the advice bro..
This is the most useful channel for 100m sprint. It is more complex than any other channel does. Thanks for this!!
Hey man, i’m 100m sprinter, just a curiosity, do you sprint the same day that you lift weight? or do you separate them?
Thanks!
Could you give us an example video for a week plan sessions including sets and reps, thanks .
I am a 14 year old jumper…. How much weight should I be lifting coach???
Sir, do you have a preferred exercise or exercises for core, or is this area worked adequately by the work already shown without targeting it directly? Thank you.
Great video but from which point can I tell that I don’t need power lifts anymore so I can switch to speed specific exercises

This is absolutely amazing. I have never heard anybody explain the process as well as you have. Excellent!
So are you saying that athletes should be training with two distinct focuses? One for strength, where athletes move those heavy loads as fast as they can, and one for power where they combine plyometrics with 75% 1RM lifts?
Hmmmmmm this channel name seems to be similar to another one???
There is any source where i can study about Atletism training in general? Or better if focused on sprinting. These are extremely valuable informations, but i wanna build a knowledge basis too. If you guys cognize books or well structured guides, please let me know.
My cousin informed me about the “sowo hope site” (Google it). This is a weight loss program that actually works. In the beginning I was a bit skeptical in a couple of weeks I’ve already dropped over 14 pounds. Google it to learn more.
I can do 100m in 10.8 on grass without spikes, how much quicker do you think I’ll be on track with spikes?
So what are the best exercise that focus on accelration and leaning foward
the faster sprinter is the wors lifter! something doesn’t work 😉
What posential do you think a 15 year old that has trained sprint And track for a year that runs 11.42 23.44 And 53.32 has? And before that was a lazy gamer before that.
Should the arm muscles be tight during sprint or they should be relaxed…
