Best etiquette would be.. GOLF gentlemen only ladies forbidden.. I honestly believe women hate golf but do it simply for spite.. men were not alowed to have just one thing to them selves. I mean have you ever seen a women swing a club it’s the most awkward thing to behold..
Great video Ellie! They also carry bear spray, knives and other weapons in the US….not sure if they would be needed in Ireland:)
The song Irish eyes are smiling could have been about you. Such warmth ☝️
Very informative video, some very good tips, good job. Compeed is a lifesaver.
your eyes match the back drop!!! also 10/10 very good video, but your eyes!!
Now when I play for practice I always mark my cards off the green, but when I used to play in a match in HS we had to mark our scorecards on that green in case there were any disagreements about score.
Be careful in Hawaii if you play slow. Been griped at by more than one Marshall for letting groups play through. Got told to skip holes if I need to speed up.
Fucktards that leave cigar and cig butts on the green and tee off…
2:34 have you all found the rakes missing on the courses during the lockdown? What the heck are you supposed to do? Pull your ball out or play it and leave it? I played it but didn’t dig in my feet.
I get so hyped when my girlfriend makes a good shot that I whoop it up and cheer for her. I need to get out of that habit, I always feel bad when I am too loud about it.
So my dad tells me doing donuts in the golf cart on the fairway “isn’t proper golf etiquett” I call bullshit
So my dad tells me doing donuts in the golf cart on the fairway “isn’t proper golf etiquett” I call bullshit
I wear running shirts year round I just add long sleeve lightweight wool shirt over then a vest rain jacket or puffy.
I have two golf rules:
1). Keep it moving
2). Don’t walk in my putting line.
You can talk, clank clubs, I frankly don’t care.
My course was busy once. Had 4 people on it at the same time.
Don’t pick up balls, especially if they are in the rough or on the fairway, that aren’t yours. If they are in the woods and you stumble across them, fair game. But if they’re just sitting in the rough between two holes, leave them alone! You don’t know if it’s a ball in play for someone else, especially if it’s a busy day. Now, if you circle around and the ball is still there, fair game. Otherwise, leave it alone!
Nothing worse than playing with a rule / etiquette nazi. Unless you’re PGA get over yourself and have fun.
When I was a kid I thought you were supposed to yell “Four!!!” every time you hit the ball.
A player snapping his glove velcro while you are playing your ball is international code for eff you.
What gets on my tits is when people reach the green they drop their bag at the front of the green, I seem to be the only 1 who puts my bag down at the exit of the green in the direction of the next tee. Nothing worse than waiting for a group to finish the hole then they start walking towards you to get their bags then walk off through the green to the next tee.
Calling up the group behind you for the par 3 should be No1. The tee is still occupied on your next hole and your not going anywhere regardless
OT doesn’t the well fed buff stack on the moose satchel buff? (88#)
I haven’t been in the temps as low as you, but with temps around freezing I go with basically the same. UA tights, running shorts, T-shirt, long sleeve running shirt, montbell wind shirt, puffy. Oh and a buff as a beanie! Keep it simple. I bring spare T, shorts and socks. Mostly the T and shorts just to keep my quilt from getting funky!
Awesome vid. I’m all set, I have grey or 5.11 off OD most pant,s merino base layer top and botom, 3 pair merino/nylon inner layer socks..2 pair bonds or bamboo undies. Very important for not only a bob but also learned all this via hiking for anywhere between a six day journey and a lazy overnighter.
Raingear is paramount and apart from finding a good jacket like you did…Frogg Toggs are my bugout choice. Also cheap dollar shop ponchos. That’s for later. Not exactly grey man in certain parts.
2 best balls i hit all day was when i stepped on a sand rake. An old one but a good one.
Slow play, loud talkers, loud music, clanging clubs around, driving carts when people are swinging, never being ready for your turn, and walking around the golf course so slow it looks like you are nailed to a cross, are all problems that ruin golf for me. I constantly complained about slow play at one Club until the pro wrote an article in the Club newsletter that said, remember that your goal should be to keep up with the group in front of you, not to stay in front of the group behind you.
Wait you mean I can’t make craters on the green after a 3 putt
During this COVID period, there are no rakes in the bunkers. Maybe a informal rule should be to take relief from a footprint if your ball lands in one.
People have to think about ethnicity too, for example I’m very racially ambiguous so I can blend in most metropolitan areas but if was to go to an all white town I would stick out. Similarly if you’re white or black and are in Chinatown you’ll also stick out. So choosing location and route is important.
I’ve noticed several YouTube channels transition from being entertaining to becoming pitchmen for products that have been given them. That’s about the time I usually unsubscribe. Your advice on getting the cheaper clothes is refreshing!
Great video again Ellie. I wish I knew how bad cotton was a lot sooner, spent a lot of time shivering on top of mountains before I figured it was just the t-shirt sucking all the heat out of me. One thing I would add is that you don’t need to spend a fortune to get started. As with most things in life: the more you know, the less you need. I’m sure you could do a video on “things you don’t need” at this stage.
Note to self: Don’t hike with Bryce in the summer. #nofreeballin #dudeyournutsareshowing
Might have to post a link to this video on my club notice board. I swear more than half the so called members are guilty of all of the above.
OMG yes marking the card on the green is annoying I’ve started shouting fore just before I take my shot
those that are aware… please repair as many pitch marks as you possibly can. I dont care if you hold up play. We are the guardians and we will be favored in valhalla!
One extra merino, or synthetic, underwear pair and one pair extra socks. Long nylon hiking pants if I know the trail is brushy or weedy. You are a beast for handling the mesh or netted liners in running shorts I hate those liners rubbing on me!!
A person can score a decent fleece at Decathlon Sports for anywhere from $12.00 to 20’s, depending on weight and features. They have the zipper on the European side, as it is a French company. These are not bulletproof, but they have been with me for 2 years (I have 3), and they work fine.
Darn Toughs are indeed tough, IMO, but they have a high nylon content (usually around 50%). I prefer a nearly 100% wool sock if it’s going to be chilly. Wigwam is a decent brand priced a lot less than Smart Wool.
Enjoy the Bryce gear ethos, keep it rolling! Your next DIY project, should you accept It, is a Tyvek rain skirt!
Played yesterday and I was in the sand, after my shot I realized there was no rake. My partner and I both looked but couldnt find one. I felt bad but i left. Is there something I could have done since there was no rake
cotton/nylon mix is real good its what the US military use.gear can be found at thirft stores dirt cheap
Respect juniors. Lots of older players seem to hate on a group of 12 year olds. I’m old but was young and learning once (still learning)
I usually try to mark my scorecard at the teebox per hole at the next tee box. I’ll tally 9 hole scores usually at the clubhouse or at the tee box at hole 10
I love how etiquette is an important part of a video filmed in the middle of an authoritarian kleptocracy.
Every sport plays with crowds roaring….but dont make a sound while I swing my driver or I will have a meltdown….no club clanking or it will make me shank my shot….so stupid
You hit it out the park brother. During Hurricane Sandy we had about 2 real days of shtf scenario where the cops were told to stanby until the national guard came power lines were down and we had to make run I dressed similar to this and jumped on a mountain bike with my bug out bag and made it pass several gangs of looters in the area. I had one close call but that was because we let our guard down once we made it a few miles out of the bad area only to run into a gang of about 20 looters we hit full blast on the bikes and hauled ass lol this is New York City in 2012 so imagine it took national guard 2days to get here houses and every single store in my area got robbed and torched. So from Katrina to Sandy and even 911 we see how slow to respond and unprepared first responders can be. I was there the whole time we actually went to the precient to see why police were letting people loot they said they had strict orders to standbye I was like are you serious they was like yep oh and they were also understaffed so the precient itself had but a few officers which is why I think they were told that.
Don’t wear a watch (unless a golf one) when playing golf like my guy in the video is smh
Nice video I was entertained and got information to that’s the way to go
You may want to check out the Wrangler Men’s Outdoor Comfort Flex Cargo Pant. They’re $22 at Walmart. I was skeptical of them but they are really comfortable hiking-type pants at a great price. They have cargo pockets that aren’t all baggy. No DWR, though.
The problem with letting the group behind you play through…is that there’s another group directly behind them, and another one directly behind them.
So where do you stop?
I respect the course so much I miss all the greens so I don’t leave a pitch mark. I also hit my shots thin to avoid divots.
Marking the scorecard on the green is annoying but those who sit there in their carts and mark everybody’s score down before moving on is even more annoying while you’re waiting to make your approach shot.
My friends and I play to music, I don’t understand those with such a weak ability to concentrate that they need total silence. It isn’t like they’re pros or anything. I’m a 10 handicap and noise doesn’t affect me when i’m playing…ridiculous.
Have you ever thought about using military boots. And do you bring a weapon for bear protection?
If you are trying to rush people infront of you. Maybe you should play another sport. Golf is a slow sport. So… ya.
Nice video!:) do u also know what it means that my (for example) rabbit hat, that once was said it was new, now says its “worn” even tho it is again on 100%? Do clothes also loose stats in time so IT’s kinda ment to craft new ones sooner or later?
Thank you, Could you do an update on wolves and Timberwolves? Some things have changed.
Are there really golf courses that allow mobile phones on the course?
This is a complete no no.
This guy is why i hate golf. Play a good amount but these asshole boomers need to die and golf can actually get super popular
Talking while people are preparing to hit or hitting. You have a four and a half hour round you have to be quiet for say 10 minutes DO IT.
Thanks for this and all the other videos. I’m just getting into backpacking and appreciate the details, options and personal examples.
I went golfing with my friend the other day and he went into the sand trap. But there was no rake so we asked the clubhouse where it was when we were done, they don’t have them out b/c of the virus but they go out and fix them periodically throughout the day.
Great video. Can we get a woman’s model and see what her attire would be. I am sure its the same, but in woman’s fit. Thanks.
Integrity maybe Patrick “Sandcastle” Reed should watch this video.
Except for this week because we got hammered with about 15 inches of snow
8: kicking other players’ balls into the bunker when they are not looking
You should have both hands on the rake when tidying a bunker. Discard your club before using the rake.
Try playing in Thailand… Thai and many Asian players stand around chatting loud enough to be heard on the tee…..AND they play with up to 6 players!!!! its like a bloody procession at my local course sometimes!
Gentlemen, if you must piss while on the course, please go out of bounds or behind a teeing area and not in area where another person might get piss on their ball. Also, for cleanliness, please carry hand sanitizer. No one wants to shake your hand after the round after you’ve been shaking your willie.
I have a couple tips regarding clothing. First keep your irreplaceable clothes in top condition, and second is to keep extra clothes such as wool sweaters and wool toques.
This topic reminds me of another “how to survive the long dark” type video I saw some dude post to youtube and link to from the TLD forums on Steam. In he he advises players to wear only a t-shirt, jeans and running shoes. Basically only the crap clothes everyone who pays any attention to in TLD take off as soon as we can find something better. His reasoning is those clothes are so light the don’t debuff sprinting so you can just run everywhere and get to the next indoor location before the cold gets you.
The funny thing was how the guy reacted when the game’s vets all at first politely corrected him on this bad strategy and he went apesh** and threw a temper tantrum on the forum. It was kind of funny to see a dude take a game that seriously that he felt the need to throw a fit because people disagreed politely with a strategy he was recommending.
this is one of the best videos I have seem pertaining to golf. There are all kinds of videos and tips from other players regarding how to lower your score but very little teaching on how to have proper etiquette. I have struggled with this for years and have been embarrassed more than once when someone is rude believing that because you are older you should know everything. What a perfect way to ruin ones day by being too harsh with them and not taking the extra minute to explain where they made the mistake.
If you have a hard time hitting a stationary ball because somebody is clanking their clubs together, then imagine if you played a real sport like baseball or basketball where people are screaming during each at bat or free throw lol
Agree with looking after course, the rest is just zzzzzzzzzz, it’s the boring sort of shit that puts people of trying the game, no club clanking ffs
Not a rules type person myself, but in golf good etiquette makes everyone play better and makes the day much more relaxed and enjoyable. Firm believer in following the rules on the course.
To materialistic. I get survival is your hobby but wouldn’t take advice from this vid. Your as good as the products you possess. Not good, look into skills more then gear.
Great video. Very practical, simple and to the point.. Most of all your not ashamed mention GOD. Thanks for your time.
Please explain how we can all repair two pitch marks on the greens i can not figure how it can be done.
Missed probably the most important one. The one that makes sure we all go home in one piece. You shd shout “fore” ANYTIME you don’t know that you ball won’t hit anyone ie it’s the default when you hit an errant shot
The main thing not talked about here is the group that wants to play a good game of golf and they bring thier friend, child, or significant other with them on a challenging course and that person plays 10 yards at a time. There are easy courses that you should should take your beginner’s to until they are ready. I know this sucks for you the good players, but true etiquette.
Patagonia makes some slick stuff, pricey but high quality, very discreet, solomon makes great shoes, I had those same shoes the lacing system is as close to back to the future as it gets right now. I may have to do a canadian winter spoof of this lol
Nothing worse then getting golf balls hit at ya when u have no where to go and you’re waiting for the group in front to be clear of your shot.
Some of these rules are why people hate golfers. I can’t stand golfing with someone who takes their game so seriously that you can’t make any noise while they’re teeing off. I played with my uncle once, he got mad when someone stepped in the line of his putt because it may have an impact on his putt….I’m never playing with him again. Golf is at it’s best when it’s casual and not stuffy.
I thought you weren’t going to stop getting closer to the camera.
Why does the visual of this video not match what you are talking about? Like show where these stats are on screen in the menu while you are talking about them maybe.
Seattle, seems you had more to worry about than when you made this video. My question is did it work??
i do like seeing use of an actual belt and shoes as opposed to others grey man guides wearing more distinct boots and some sort of range tacticool belt
tho for you area, shouldnt you have some sore of fleece middle layer, i imagine that seattle gets pretty cold for at least half the year so vest or hoodie should be a necessity
Cliff…great vid..you have much to cover here…i sense you are speaking quicker to keep things moving but your diction remains very clear. Well done. U r a pro.
Why not cotton? The military even is starting to tell the personel to try to refrain from wearing stuff like that. In like cotton(which is fire retardant), that will melt to your skin. Just a heads up.. I try to not wear it because I found this out years ago
I have been looking all over for the right pants, and those look like it! However, I followed he PDF link… and are those the same pant? The pockets don’t look at all like what yours in the video look like:( The ones in your video look more like the Klash pant: https://www.rei.com/product/109943/kuhl-klash-pants-mens
As prepper you need to get in shape man…clothes and stuff are important but what if you have to run for miles loaded with bag to reach a safe place? Physical training is as important as gear
Gray man, New York: Wear black, vote for liberals. I do one, and refuse to do the other
People not fixing thier ball marks drives me insane..like its not hard at all..lazy bums
Just in case this man carries a pair of half-finger gloves on him.
Being white alone makes you stand out in king county anymore. Its all 3rd world migrants now.
Blacked out ninja mode looks the coolest but is not practical
I’ve never got a hole in one, but I did hit a guy. I should have yelled ‘Fore!’ but I was too busy saying ‘there’s no way that ball is going to hit him’
I run really cold as well and I snow camp in the cascades! Boil water in a nalgene, as it really helps and as you know wool is the warmest. I also bring down slippers/booties, it is a game changer!
It’s getting worse. We were on the first tee and the next group came up in their cars crowding us as we were about to hit. Then they started to jabber, talking loudly. I asked the lead driver, “”Are you going to stop, we are hitting?” He said, “I don’t care about the GD etiquette.” Things got heated up very fast, I can tell you that. No physical blows, but it was close. That is the state of mind these days. People only care about themselves. They have no respect for other people.
I’m not sure but,if anyone else wants to learn about
freeze dried food survival
try Franaar Spies Control Formula (do a search on google )? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my buddy got excellent success with it.
An-fucking-tarctica… wtf…
the fuck shit did I just stumble upon…
I’d love it if you could put a prepper women’s perspective on bug out clothing.
Gray man crap dont work, just a theory in american society and prepper world. Those that haven’t experienced any SHTF in life will claim such gray man concept colors matter. In real life they dont. Sure blending in is ok but there are just way to much people in city. What u wear dont matter. Always have smart merino wool products if u want best quality. Base layers, long sleeve. You can wear them for long time they have antimicrobial properties and wont stink in a weak or more of wear, like a cotton or cheep polyester shirt in just one day of sweating in hot weather.
For the ‘thumbs down’ votes, I wish there was a requirement to explain why. I cannot help but wonder if some experienced hiker heard something, perhaps even just one small segment, that they disagreed with. For the novice, it would be nice to know what and why someone disagreed. (Hearing another opinion can’t hurt.)
Thanks for all the videos so different you have it in the east ( I live in Washington State) by the way what’s a tick just asking
Your Gray man uniform…is way better than the HOMELESS Man uniform.
The base layer poly tee shirt would be nice to have in a long sleeve. The color shade is nice for solar heat rejection, this is a factor the because of my desert home is important to me I have some tan poly pocket tees from “Dickey” That meet all the specs you listed.
Shirts I to like a good button up shirt to wear but suggest a grey plaid because I have seen that cause a person to be less visible standing in the open at 50 yards because it broke up his silhouette. In wet areas the habitat fishing shirts are nice but to me a little to hot. For pant I like 6 pocket cargos in my desert tan or grey the store discount store brands are cheap enough to change out regularly to avoid failure point no need to bug out with you ass cheek showing. And the cotton is fairly quite. I have these in real tree hunting pants but these are for hard core E&E. For a belt I use a nylon web strap with faster buckles no metal so I don’t need to remove my belt for metal detectors. My rain jacket is a Columbia in tan and black. My cap is an “Allegiance” sweat proof cap in dark grey.
I understand this is elementary but what about not and I repeat NOT touching another person’s ball. If its not your ball and you can see other people around you, you don’t know don’t touch that ball.
Your pronunciation is slower than in your videos from a year ago. Very good improvement!
I think I’ll go for the green make look. Should blend in just fine in the evergreen state!
What I hate, is being a twosome, constantly pushing a 3 or 4′ some in front of you, and they almost run to the next tee, determined not to let you play through! This is when, the moment they hit their second shot, BOMBS AWAY!
Your “bug out clothing” costs more than my entire wardrobe. LOL, great video.
Grey works well in the woods as well. Look at the color of tree trunks
for the grey man outfits and recommendation. I like going out with my casual clothing. The area I go in will dictate how I fit in. The suburban area I might wear brown leather jacket and a jeans with white t-shirt. The urban area neither downtown or uptown area, I would usually wear blazer for professional setting and thin/thick hoodie for informal setting. My everyday carry will also adapt depending on my area as well. From transitioning to backpack to packable travel bag, g-shock to panerai, and grey shoes into brown shoes, from dark pants and light shirt to switching the opposite way. Just alternating what I look can help blend in easily as well. Also by looking natural to that environment is important thing to urban survival as well (sources from, blackscoutsurvival
Considerng the fact you are blending in to the environment, in one of the podcast I have listened to from Mind4Survival. They key skills for preppers basics are situational awareness, leadership, camouflage, and likability.
But then you should take the advantage of teachning your kids and their friends about stealth. Using the hide and seek game with team cooperated usually in 3-4 kids in each team. If there is more than a one kid to play like 5 or 7 kids, try having them to be the observers, see from the game what they can learn. Make it fun for kids to let them have your un-used phone. By allowing them to use the parent no-use phones, they can at least improvise or use it for something good. Also they at least need to learn something while having a party right?
I would also recommend for the high school or college students if you are planning to be prepared is to go to your local outdoorshop and see what workshops and classes they offer. In addition to that try outdoor activity focused primarly on the following subjects like fishing, hunting, orienteering, wildlife photography, etc. Using your senses and mapping them to your advantage is the must if you want to be a sniper or scout for that reason.
i’ve found fingered over fingerless glove far more useful and protective. For fingertip, thumbtip use in typing, fishing rod casting..etc I cut the tips off of just the pointer and thumb as least as possible.
I guess the fact that I could tell what you were drinking from the back of the bottle at the beginning of the video says something about me. Not sure if I’m bragging or ashamed. Thanks for the video.
Being 6’4 it doesn’t matter what I wear. I stand out. Grey man doesn’t work.
Great video! I wear tights hiking too but after my shorts got snagged off a bunch I ditched the shorts and wear tights alone
I had a Patagonia half-zip sweater mid layer, it was made out of nylon and polyester!! I REALLY hated it!!! It Prevented Me From Keeping WARM!! The Nylon In it, prevented it from being Warm. Nylon DISPERSES Heat,..Quickly Forces Your Body Heat AWAY From you,.. & it dries really fast, but you don’t want nylon in ANY of your clothing, that you’re taking out into the COLD! Nylon is for HOT, Hot Desert Weather.
The dirt is a god idea to look inconspicuous rather than a polo or standard t shirt, it’s definitely less threatening? If you get where I’m coming from?
Great video as always had me laughing pretty hard with the sun glasses
Awesome video bro. I was wondering if you could do video on first aid kit for your Bug out bag. Thanks
I don’t know why but seeing you talking and walking closer and closer was funny good video
Excellent info. Not a lot of videos give attention and details to the baseline clothes setup.
I just had a very interesting idea. Ice skates, to move on ice faster and use less stamina then sprinting, movement speed is the same as any other footwear on snow but suffers a penalty when walking on stone metal or wood. To repair a whetstone and cured leather would be needed
I love my Kuhl pants. If only itch free were Julie itch free. Love the half finger gloves for the burner phone.
something to consider about synthetic fabrics in a disaster is that fabric melting to your skin. Also they build up a stink way quicker then natural fabrics.
Great video but I can’t watch anyone who uses profanity sorry.
If you truly want to fit in with everyone else.. carry a coffee cup and film everything on your phone.
Thanks for the video
Trade out that synthetic t for a marino travel t. Synthetic is less durable, less thermoefficient, is worse in fire or rain but most importantly it will accumulate b.o. faster than wool
Saw the Seattle weather today. Will you be adding snow shoes to your bag?
I play mostly at cheaper, more casual courses due to being a beginner, but my phone helps me out a lot. I use a gps that tracks ranges to the center of the green and shows me where potential hazards are, which saves time of using a range finder, looking for looking for lost balls, etc.. Lastly, since the app is already open, might as well keep score since it calculates handicap and shows useful info about the number of putts, green in reg, and all the other stats that will help improve my game. Just my opinion, I understand why it might be seen as disrespectful tho.
I find this one of the hardest categories when it comes to ‘bugging out’, and part of this is due to a lot of it also depending on your plan and the actual emergency situation, as well as the actual meaning of ‘grey man’. So ‘grey man’ first, what constitutes as ‘grey man’ depends a lot of what everybody else is wearing, to example this say wearing your outfit during a military parade or say during a transparade (both not actual emergency situations, but both do demonstrate the concept in regards to being a ‘grey man’ in the crowd), you’d be sticking out like a sore thumb in your chosen attire. At which point i think your plan also has to be included, along side one’s environment. Are you planning to stick to the city for the duration of the emergency? or where will you be going? And what sort of emergencies do you plan to bug out for (do those involve chance of fires, or is rain a big issue), do you try to go with a car at first and ditch it in grid lock (in which case you will likely be moving along with ‘the herd’ for quite some time in which case you will just want to look as everyday as possible).
And i sort of know what these are for you (to some extend) so i can understand your choices to some extend (like i don’t like the polyester when it comes to possible fires when Rainer might go off but then again wool can be incredible uncomfortable and when it comes to rain combined with ash clouds then having a good rain jacket (which will be inherently plastic) will be a grace). So, i get your clothing, and i think for your particular location and climate, as well as bugout scenario and plan, you picked a reasonable set of clothing due to the weigh off of factors and situations you plan to bug out in (maybe a bit to ‘grey’ for a family type bugout like why not dress like a family on vacation struck by disaster at their time of leisure, would explain some of the bags and such and that too is ‘grey man’ in regards to it’s meaning for preppers, aka. do not stick out like a prepper in an environment of needing unprepared people!).
So perhaps this series needs a 3rd episode, with some deeper thoughts behind what clothing does, and what it can do for you, what types of fabric are suitable for which situations, as well as how the ‘Grey Man’ philosophy interweaves with one’s bugout plan and expected scenarios. Because as my opening here states, it’s a difficult topic, and it’s not just the climatic environment that weighs in.
I hope that you consider a footwear video too, because bugging out on foot will require some specialized footwear to to be successful.
Excellent video, my friend. Many great ideas. Keep up the good work!
i can attest to those merino socks in your pdf. that’s the brand i wear and i love them. they don’t make my feet hot in warm/hot weather and are comfortable for all-day wear.
I have another for you: on the green after putting don’t put your putter head into the hole to rip the ball out of the hole, it damages the edge of the hole for the following players.
One comment on mobile phones: many of us use golfing apps on our smartphones whilst out on the course. Electronic scorecards and GPS ranges etc. I use SwingU (no I’m not on commission).
They are the best shoe out there, they are all i wear and the boot version. Also the 5.11 Tactical TDU ripstop pro pant is bomb proof.
gray man is not camo.. the idea of a gray man is that no one would notice you. from any one else. and you also blend into background.
One thing you might think about doing is having the clothes in a small, cheap, disposable bag (like a small duffle bag from Walmart). That way you can grab it with your B.O.B, change as soon as you can, and either toss the bag, or save it for scavenging.
Thanks Cliff!! Top draw advice as always!! I am going to guess you have 2 warm mid layers in the BOB? You should have one on the rail and 1 in the bag, 2 mid weight mid layers are warmer and more versatile than 1 chunky one.
There are vegan clothing options that work just as well as wool or any other animal material.
I thought for sure you would mention the type of underwear you would recommned. Any suggestions?
For all its advantages, keep in mind that polyester clothing is not fire-resistant. If you’re trying to escape from a burning building, for example, intense flames could melt the clothing to your skin. Also, designer labels/styles could make you a greater target for scavengers.
Remove the labels, mask them off and spray paint them matte, black
I walk with the knee high smart wool socks in fall with the just above knee shorts like it’s 1985. But you throw on some tights and Montbell tachyon or some enlightened equipment copper fields and you have your winter hiking set up for the bottoms.
If your city is truly ‘urban’, and the environment befits, dress like a non-threatening homeless person. You’ll be far more invisible than others blending in, most people won’t describe you with more words than ‘some homeless guy’, and the best part would be you don’t need to coordinate anything. Most people will be making an effort to avoid looking at you.
I totally agree with you that it’s busy on the coure they have nowhere to go, however golf clubs squash as many people as they can get onto the course and all it take is a slow group to stuff everything up, it’s very annoying and frustrting when people take more than 1 practice swing and some are retrieving balls out of the water which isnt theirs. Just because they paid a green fee deoesnt mean they own the course for 6hrs.
Slow play ruins everyones game and momentum, the marshalls sjould be tougher on slow players and get them to pick up the ball and move on, only 3 putts maximum allowed, pick up after 3rd putt, if you miss the 3rd go and get some lessons and come back. In letting golfers through, some people and members are just assholes and get offended if they let players through, hence hitting the missile towards them is not a bad idea at times.
How you holding up with all the snow? Did it hit your area hard?
As a boy I learned golf etiquette by caddying for my Dad. I also learned how to swear.
Thumbs up good gear especially the socks a crappy situation can be made cake when you have a dry pair of socks…personally I’d add another pair and some foot powder wool socks can make the feet sweat and the powder will elithe need to change socks.
Shorts over longjohns was practicaly a NOLS uniform 50 years ago.
It looks like you might be doing the Paria? I did Buckskin this year and was supposed to also go along the Paria but…yeah, forgot the keys for the shuttle car lol Hope it was a fun trip! (And that you didn’t forget the shuttle car keys, if you had a shuttle car lol)
But in a place were most people are extremely fashionable, the greyman look is going to stick out like a sore thumb
for sure, don’t be a noob! I totally have fallen guilty to cranking the clubs while others are shooting off on their tee shot.
I fine it estounding that people don’t know this and that you had to make this video. Its all common sense, I assumed we all knew these rules???
Tights are so comfy…..used to think they were square but now I just don’t care anymore…as long as it works.
Hells bells man NOLS guides were going around looking like Peter Pan in shorts and longjohns 50 years ago. Nothing new under the sun.
Bryce! Great video! I enjoy your humor throughout the technical difficulties. I have to agree with you about Darn Tough socks, as much as I love them and have owned one pair for winter hiking for 6 years and it has not worn out yet. The down-side is that their “hiking weight” socks tend to retain moisture and are a bit too warm for the summer months here in Utah. Every Smartwool sock I’ve ever owned has worn out with weekly wear after a year. What I’ve switched to is Farm to Feet, specifically the Damascus model, they’re super breathable, and since I’ve been wearing them every day for work for over a year and they are still intact without signs of thinning!
T.U.P Another amazing video and your PDF document is an amazing resource. Thank you for all your hard work, it is really appreciated.
Heck there is nothing wrong with off brand fleece. I bought the Old navy R1 rip offs last year got 3 for $20. One hooded R1 is what 150?
Bryce I’m a Colorado 14er hiker and western river rafter mostly and I completely agree, I’m also in tights most of the time.
Like the fact that you keep it simple, go for lower priced items, and keep it real!
I went on a backpacking trip this past November where I wore a beat up pair of running tights that I’ve probably owned for 20 years. They worked so well for me on the trail that I’m going to find it hard to hike in pants in the future. Yeah, a guy might look a bit silly dressed like that, but I’m used to riding my bike all kitted out in spandex, so I already have little shame!
I’ve actually found two “down” jackets (one was synthetic) at discount stores too. Sometimes WAY marked down. Best $20 ever .
Crazy how I recognized you so easily when at Mohican a few weeks back. If I remember correctly you were not wearing tights with shorts or did I see your green puffy.
Saw the seattle bike comment and thought it was great, Id love to see a “bug out bike” kit oe even a get home bike kit
I go back and forth between my Smartwool socks and Darn Toughs, too. They’re fairly interchangeable; it’s really the exchange program that puts DT ahead, but I don’t go through socks like that, and even if I did, I think I’d rather give money to the company that makes them. My real love are the Injinji toe socks, but I’ve just had SO MANY problems with the durability. It’s a real bummer. I can’t hike more than 50 miles or so before they inevitably get a hole in them. So disappointing.
Nothing like a very super cheap fleece jacket
Doesn’t matter what name is as long as cheap an fleece
One important thing you forgot to talk about, is the underpants. Really essential, though, when you have to walk all day long to escape from other people, or find food and water to make you and yours survive. No?
I grew up in Manhattan (NYC) and learned to play by taking lessons into a net. Before my Dad would let me play, he took me out with his friends and taught me the etiquette of the game. I was champing at the bit to play my first round, but not until he was satisfied that I got both the courtesy towards others and respect for the course, would he allow me to go on the course to play. Such lessons, well learned, remain with me more than sixty years later.
Cold weather camping terrifies me because I cannot stand being cold. Going to stretch my comfort zone in a couple weeks. It will probably only be in the 30s at night but that is super cold for me. I have a fleece base layer, super warm socks, and and long pants and long sleeve shirt to sleep in. I have a 15 degree bag. In your opinion, is that enough to stay warm overnight? I am not worried about hiking during the day as I always get warm once I am moving.
Great video. I’ve modeled a lot of my gear after you. Shawnee is a torture test for Ohio. Especially in the summer. I’d say I’d like to go with you but there’s no way I could keep up. Looking forward to more videos
Great video! I hate it when the camera just stops. I’m also with you on the running shorts for the summer. The breaks in the video are hilarious.
Check out “Scotty’s Gone Walkabouts”. He does a lot of different tarp setups on his videos. He’s also an incredible cinematographer.
Way to break it down for us! I got to see the GW in person! Lucky me! Now when it comes to underwear, I need my Exoffico!
Cliff, love the video! Glad to see you making videos again (which means you settled into your new house). I disagree with your presentation of the “gray man” concept. While it is shared with many others, the color was never intended to match the physical surroundings. Gray for concrete and green for woods? Nope. The concept is about matching the people around you. If everyone in your neighborhood wears plaid, wear plaid. If everyone wears board shorts, wear board shorts. This is letter A in SURVIVAL:
S—SIZE UP THE SITUATION
U—UNDUE HASTE MAKES WASTE
R—REMEMBER WHERE YOU ARE
V—VANQUISH FEAR AND PANIC
I—IMPROVISE
V—VALUE LIVING
A—ACT LIKE THE NATIVES
L—LEARN BASIC SKILLS
I ride mtn bikes often so there’s wind I ride with rain jackets and get sweaty when it’s snowing or raining. Walking is nicer cause then I stay cooler. Thin shirts dry quick too meditate in the winter by the time you get too cold shirts are dry.
Forget all that. I’m going to be wearing BDU’s. They’re extremely tough, durable, and practically indestructible. Along with that I’ll be taking along a wetsuit. A decent wetsuit will keep you warm and dry on in the worst weather, and if you find yourself in a flood, the water that seeps in is quickly warmed up by your body. I noticed that you’re wearing tennis shoes. I’ll be wearing waterproof combat boots. They provide ankle support that’s second to none. Nothing like trying to bug out when you’ve injured your ankle. My goal isn’t to blend into a building. It’s to wear the most durable clothing available and keeping myself warm under the most extreme circumstances. I will be carrying a few weapons for my own safety from over aggressive thieves that I would fully expect to come across. So I’ll be carrying any excess equipment in a military style backpack. Attached to myself will be a couple of canteens, a drop holster, and my gas mask. Additionally, I’ll be wearing a tactical helmet with several lights, a GoPro camera, and noise suppressing headphones with a UHF/VHF communications radio system installed. All that equipment would be for a buyout due to the breakdown of government and society itself. Otherwise, I’m staying put.
You’re young wait till your stuff starts hanging low, I never used to wear underwear all the time, now I can’t without major issues.
I run a very similar setup, it’s really all you need to do various things. Set of clothing, set of wool thermals, windjacket, rain jacket, fleece upper, some kind of technical moistwicking longsleeve from RAB that is extremely breathable (paires fantastic with the wind jacket, now it traps heat) down bodywarmer, beany, spare socks and undies, buff, wool gloves. I don’t allways bring all of it but it has suited me to well bellow the 30s, and allows me to take my 350 gram sleeping bag into the thirties. I ditched the fleece upper a couple of years ago because it’s bulky, but now that my other gear has become so small that doesn’t matter and a fleece is a really nice final layer next to a campfire, and a cushion or pillow.
I don’t do shorts, but bought softshell pants from Mamut that used a “3x dry” fabric. It’s amazing how one long pair of black pants can keep you cool when it’s hot, warm(ish) when it’s cold, reasonably dry an very comfortable when it’s wet. And of course keeps the bugs away. I’ve used it for almost 11 years now, had to patch it up after being pierced by a branch and I allready resent the day I must replace it. It’s probably my favourite pieces of gear.
Gray man doesn’t mean dress like a weirdo who only wears gray you dumbrain.
Pre-sellout Smartwools were the best. My 20 year old one’s outlast brand new versions. They’re dead to me in favor of Darn Tough now, but would go back to Smartwool circa 2000 in a heartbeat.
I’ve been known to hike in compression underwear when I get chaffed. Tights in the winter under my pants are life Awesome stuff bro
Did Shawnee last October and it was pretty awesome. Fun video! I think your green jacket equal a trademark as your hat:)
Did you steal them sunglasses from some old lady?? just messin with you
My golf pal is so anal. I don’t breathe when he’s setting up.
Simple. Basic. Minimalist. Love it. Easy watching, and still entertaining. Really like your channel! (Just something for you to read and I sure don’t expect a response!).
Not wearing underwear is just one less layer that a Samsquanch has to rip off you
Love the video. I think you might still be feeling the effects from the marathon livestream.
good vid sam Sayers never was found hiking whistle n bear spray a must
I can’t for the life of me understand how anyone could gives those tips a thumbs down?
Nice simple easy tips that we should all follow. Common sense really isn’t it.
“I didn’t really want that color but I found a good deal on it.”
I love finding awesome prices on less popular colors. Some are so bad though, even I have to turn it down. Like an enlightened equipment sleeping bag I saw in hot pink and camo lol.
like the assassins creed cosplay
AND TIGHTS HAVE POCKETS NOW THEY ARE SO COMFY not the pockets themsYOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN
Damn dude those unsolicited Tick Pics are nightmare fuel!
Hello Bryce, thank you for sharing this informative and entertaining video. I really enjoyed it. Please keep up your great videos. All the best to you and your family. See you on the next one.
Great video, good tips there as well as awesome reviews.
One factor tends to get overlooked by many, however: if there is a big delta between the clothes you wear normally and those in your bugout/get home/shtf/whatever bag: do try to wear those at least a couple of hours or days before adding them to your pack. Get used to them. You need to feel comfortable in these clothes first of all. If you don’t feel comfortable, it will show. You should never feel like you are wearing a costume.
Also, and this cannot be stressed enough: find a brand of T-Shirt/pants/shoes/raincoat etc that YOU find comfortable. Do not buy stuff based on the fact that it worked wonders for some dude on the web (no offense meant!).
For instance, I was shopping around for new shirts a while ago. Turns out, Nike makes some really neat looking shirts. The size was right, the price was reasonable, I liked the color it ticked all the boxes. I was almost sold but then I tried it on. And immediately took it off again. It was too narrow under the arms and the shoulders didn’t quite feel right. Nope, sorry. It just wasn’t right for me.
In the end, Under Armor was my brand of Choice. Looking into some merino wool t shirts right now, but HOLY frickballs, those are expensive.
Anyhow, that’s my 2 cents worth.
Take care and be safe
I hope you do extremely well on the Shawnee
And if I could I would be right there with you in the thick of it all
And you know what they say 3rd time’s the charm
Yea man. Tights are the new pants! Running shorts no liner nothing underneath, tights if its really cold, rain skirt or wind/light rain pants for late fall winter. Works like a champ.
Glad to see Im not the only one that spends 20 plus minutes on a 5 minute topic….
Just found your channel a couple days ago and love it! My family and I are doing Havasupai this summer and your videos have been soooo helpful in helping us plan! Also the tshirt you have in this video is so cute and I’ve seen you wear it in other videos. Where did you get it from? Thank you for your videos!!
I do have a windbreaker from Pearl iszum that I have had for the past 38 years
But it don’t pack down the tiniest amount that you have
This is the first time I’ve seen your channel and I thought the video was great. Then you ended by saying “Praise God” and I knew I found a keeper. God bless you, brother.
I agree with that polyester light layer as a base layer they let a lot of cold in they do not keep you very warm
Hey Amanda! Just found your channel, and…. I love it! Good content is so hard to find related to hiking! Thank you, and best of luck for the future of your channel!
Do you ever weight your pack? I know you said you weren’t going for any light weight awards, but i’m curious!
I live in Alabama and I’m not allergic to poison ivy. All the luck!!
Hello Amanda, thank you for sharing your informative video. It looks like you have all the essentials for a comfortable trek in the outdoors. Do you take coffee filters? They are great to pre-filter the water before it goes through your Sawyer filter. The coffee filters take up no space and no weight in your pack. All the best to you in the New Year.
can you say kind of hiking boots and sandals those were looking get news and wondering what those were!!! =)
Didn’t mention much about tent, pad, and bag. Good grief that’s a lot of clothing. Don’t just download Gaia also the maps. Alum can clarify muddy water. A fun game is watching gear videos and drinking a shot every time she says Love!
I found your YouTube channel today. Your videos are very well done, incredibly informative and enjoyable to watch.. Thank you
Great gear loadout. I’m new to your channel… I’ll make sure to check the rest 😉 Thanks for sharing your adventures too. Hiking and backpacking is so much fun!!! Take care. (Oh, I use GAIA too….such a great app)
I started wearing “Legs” wineralls tights as a base while winter hiking and bow hunting a decade ago, I picked up on it when the announcers of an NFL game mentioned the players we’re using them during a sub zero game!
Tights= moose knuckle. I may try them. Smaller footprint through the bush is not a pride moment for most men way to own it brother
Whiskey and something to sit on are must-haves in the backcountry!
You should do a video on your experience living out of your car while you saved and how you are able to go hiking all the time
Hello Amanda, this is John Coffey. I really enjoy your videos. I have 2 questions for you. Question 1: how did you water proof your pack when went into the water in your intro video? Question 2: I also use the GoPro. Do use have issues with it overheating when using aftermarket batteries? Mine shuts off automatically and I lose a lot of video footage. Keep making these great videos and keep enjoying the outdoors.
Thanks for watching! My next video will show you all the food I packed for this trip, and then I also have a trip vlog coming soon! I cannot wait to show you more!
when you have a slow group in front of you, don’t get mad..stop, look around, take in the beauty, breathe the air. You’re out there to have fun, relax and enjoy being outside. The knobs are the ones who just want to get drunk and act like idiots.
I finally gave in and got some nylon stuff for layering or summer hikes, it does make a difference. If it’s so cold you need to keep your face warm a tube scarf will do the trick and it’s easy to remove before you start sweating. Thanks for the vid!
I have a plaid inner longsleeve that says it retains heat better when wet.. theres alot for me to think about..
ok but why are you directly exposed to the cold in the gameplay shown,,,you’re schooling us on clothing but not even doing it right in the footage,,,,
Kinda useless. Maybe try showing the stat symbols on the video screen
Rules
1. Don’t make noise with the clubs on bag while other players are hitting
2. Silent your mobile phone
3. Take care of the course, repair greens, fairways
4. Clean up your bunkers
5. Don’t mark your scorecards in the green
6. Be patient with the group in front of you, respect other player
7. If you think you are going to spend a lot of time looking for the ball, let the group behind you go past.
For those who aren’t suffering from being cold all the time (Read: Not Interloper players)…”
cries in low quality T-shirt
what do you thinkg about the wolfskin jacket and the deerskin pants?
It would have been good if you had shown the clothing screen when discussing the items.
Would love to see him rate clothing in general, like some combinations in particular.
How to carry water bottles? or how to stock them? I have seen videos or screenshots that people just leave them in their camping caves. I only have that one big bottle
Love golf but a ton of people at my local course are rich snobs who think their shit don’t stink. It’s terrible having any type of human interaction there in the clubhouse, range, etc. It really has dissuaded a couple freinds I’ve brought to the course from golfing again. Just saying
The inner layer is the one you dont See when wearing it, right?
1. Not repairing ball marks on greens 2. Cigarette butts thrown down on course. These make me shake my head.
I experienced a bug out situation once, in which I had to evacuate my home in the middle of the night. There had been a gas main rupture just a few doors down from me and a huge jet of flame was literally shooting a hundred feet into the air. It was so close, it filled my sky. Problem is I sleep in the nude. I didn’t have time to put on clothes!
I would recommend that one’s bug out clothing be kept not on hangars, but in a shoulder bag right beside your bug out bag. In an emergency such as I experienced where you don’t even have time to dress, you simply use both hands to grab both bags and you are gone. The second bag you can discard after you have emptied it of it’s contents by dressing yourself.
I could never buy a ghost whisperer. I like campfires, and there’s no way i would want that expensive jacket near flying embers.
.thank you for posting so frequently on the long dark.have a merry Christmas everyone seeing this.you to lonely wolf.also great video keep up the great work man.
Are you sure about the climbing thing? I always take off my clothes before climbing, and it sure looks like my bar goes down slower (or rather that the overall energy is more than when wearing them.). Could be just a visual thing or a psychological thing. haha
Those sunglasses are almost identical to the ones Joey from MyOwnFrontier wears.
Can’t stand when players are shot in left to right taking 12 strokes on a par 4 but refuse to let you play through. Drives me beyond mad
Good video. There’s an important aspect of clothing you forgot to mention in the video, maybe you could edit in a caption using the YT editor near the end of the video as this is a pretty significant one.
There are 2 items of clothes that can scare off wolves if you’re wearing them: 1 the wolfskin coat 2the bearskin goat. Wearing either of those as a % chance whenever a wolf spots you that it will go straight into fear mode and run away from you instead of stalking or charging you. If you’re carrying a fresh kill through wolf territory, this bonus can be huge and save a run that may have otherwise ended in a deadly wolf struggle or series of them.
I’ve had situations where I stumbled into a wolf in the fog or dark or around a blind hill/curve while low on condition and because I was wearing one of these items, the wolf squealed and ran away instead of charging me, which it would have done guaranteed had I not been wearing the wolf/bear skin coat.
Man i play this game for 2-3 days on easy. I watch couple of your videos and man, its hard to understand everything.
I didn’t get to watch the video yet but I just got to say it’s nice to see people play this amazing game:)
OMG, I hate the people at my club for not raking. Some seem to think “last tee off time is in 3 hours, so I don’t need to do it, since the greenkeepers will rake them tomorrow morning”. Our bunkers look more like a beach where thousands visit every day.
And I love groups that want to play through and then play so fucking slow in front of my flight.
I see where you’re going with this and I understand but as long as you have dressed appropriately for the day what’s in your bug out/get home bag should be rigged for that task. I mean, if its cold and hammering down with rain and you haven’t got a a coat or decent footwear, you’re not in the “prepared” mind set to begin with. The chances are if the shtf you’re no gong to be in an ideal situation and you’re attire and edc ect should have you fairly covered anyway but I fully appreciate the sentiment and the detail so people can understand what this whole movement is about
Nylon is Only For Very HOT Summers! Nylon’s MAIN Ability Is To Disperse Heat! Nylon dries very fast, which is why UNDER ARMOUR uses it for their HeatGear! IF You’re Going Out Into The COLD, stick to these Fabrics; Wool, Cashmere, Silk, Acrylic, and Fluffy Polyester!
“There’s a lot of God in the wilderness. I am seeking God.” (Unknown)
I’ve been following you for only a month but I already love your channel and your work! As soon as I will have a steady income I will definetely join your Patreon list.
I’m an Italian 24 yo guy, and for a list of reasons Ireland is the love of my life although I discovered it just 7 years ago, I’ve already been there 3 times and after my graduation next summer I’m planning to do a coast-to-coast walk for a month. I’m already looking for infos and that’s how I discovered you, I wanted to tell you that your work is awesome and your maps are going to be the best help I could ask for in the planning of the route.
I also want to add that you Ellie are beautiful hoping Carl is not going to get mad haha
Thank you again, if everything goes right one year from now I’ll be on the road and I’ll send you updates if it will please you! <3
Cliff great video. Just a suggestion take a look at Daltech belts, specifically the super bio belt. It is not leather and will not get ruined from water or other elements. I have had one for 5 years and it still looks new even though I wear it every day.
“Greyman means wearing all grey”
No you fucking mallninja, grey man means looking like a completely normal person in a situation where people are specifically looking out for non-normal people, if you’re walking around in all grey tacticool clothes with hiking boots, fingerless gloves, and a backpack with your head down and arms all puffed out people are gonna immediately think “yep, that dude has a gun.”
what do you do for a living and how can I do the same as well?!
i’ve been out of playing for couple of months now and is obvious that i would return to you now that i have some time. this is the best chanel for this game. congrats and merry christmas!!!
The t shirt base layer should be skin tight for it to work properly at absorbing sweat and regulating body temp.
“OK guys, You’re going to want a hat. Hats go on your head. Next you will need a shirt. Some shirts have full sleeves and there are also types of shirts with shorts sleeves. If it rains, you may get wet. I usually wear a rain jacket if it rains”….. Thanks for all the great information man. You are definitely a subject matter expert.
Etiquette should be first thing people learn when taking up golf. The rules are there to help not punish, so many don’t know half the rules. #1 rule is to leave the course in as good or better condition than you played.
What brands of shirt and pants are you wearing in this video?
You had me at “outdoor gear” but you won me at “Praise God”!:-)
I just subscribed! I started getting into hiking for about a year now, but I’m still discovering a things, products, dos and don’ts. Keep these videos coming!
Big five has some nice thermals. Even walmart gets some good ones. And as for rain gear Walmart also has Frog Toggs now. I think there like 39 dollarsfor the set
Thanks dude!!! I’m gearing up to begin this hobby and have been collecting gear for the last couple of months (slow process if you want quality gear). I’ve watched the gear vid and I’m just missing a med kit. I haven’t really gotten into the clothes yet, so I was happy to have found this vid. I have things in my closet already that could fill the bill…missing waterproof pants. What brand do you use/recommend? Keep in mind that I don’t mind spending the money (that’s why it’s taking me months to gear up) because I only want to buy items one time. Thanks!
I suggest a wool blend long thermal underwear. It will keep you warm if the temp drops, good to sleep in, they will increase the lower temperature range of a sleeping bag.
Hey Eugene, I appreciate your videos! Would you be willing to share with me the type (brand) of pants that you are wearing in this video?
I agree with all of what you said, however any new golfer who steps out on the golf course should know or have taken the time to learn all the etiquttes before they go and play a game, it’s just Respect to golf and other players instead of beign an asshole. It happens too often that when players take too long and slow everyone down, just because theyve paid a green fee doesn’t mean they own the golf course and ruin everything for everyone else, take 2 mines to look for your ball, if it’s lost drop another take a penalty shot and move along.
gtreat videos and talk. am a happy follower of your Channel.
+PineMountainVentures Use a balaclava, or a bandana/scarf across the lower part of your face. Usually you don’t really need one during the winter though (unless you’re moving at speed, e.g., snowboarding, snowmobiling…), and a hat will suffice to keep you warm enough, especially when you’re hiking (since the heat you produce will keep you warm).
