Allium family is always a nutritional feast.
Red Onion and Spring Onions are loaded with Quercetin, a potent anticancer compound.
Allicin in Garlic is another potent compound for its effective pulmonary function management, the only other that I know of is Arjuna Bark.
Us Hare krishnas know the effects of garlic and onion. You can season your foods with many other herbs and spices just experiment.
Listen to less Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer while consuming food and drink.
Most days I chop about 3 or 4 cloves of garlic and eat it raw with kimchi and chickpeas as a side salad with a sandwich. Love garlic:)
Lol I got a link for legacy of kain, garlics and vampires
I shed lots of hair. I’m a hairy guy. I wonder if that’s how my body gets rid of lead and other heavy metals?
Here’s a tasty recipe for garlic, from the How Not to Die Cookbook: Garlic Caesar Salad Dressing: https://nutritionfacts.org/recipe/super-salad/. -NF Team
Just enjoying a large bowl of Dr. Greger’s sweet potato and kale soup from his cookbook. I’m in love. It needs salt though, not smart I know.
A Garlic bulb up my butt for an irritable, precancerous Prostate gland?? I’m trying it. Cut open garlic bulb lengthwise first before inserting. Garlic left in the refrigerator for a long time may lose its potency, I would assume.
Hi I have been on a planted based diet for a while but until recently I lernat that flaxseeds decrease your testoserone and that was my omega 3 source. Where should I get my omega 3 from? And another qusetion: I have been eating oatmeal for my breakfast for the longest time (daily dozen even recommend eating it)
But 2 days ago I learnt that oatmeal decrease your testoserone so should I eat rye flakes, barley flakes or just simply make a smothie instead or is oatmeal good for the testoserone?
I have heart disease and I am Plant Based. I use garlic powder when I cook. May have to do it every day!:) wowers! <3
So unless you eat it raw, you’re not getting any health benefits. How disappointing.
I ferment a big jar of garlic cloves and keep it in the refrigerator. The taste is mild and delicious compared to raw garlic which I cannot handle. Then I chew one up every few hours if I feel a cold coming on. It has worked to keep colds at bay.
I like the idea that we shouldn’t die from the current leading causes like heart diseases, etc if we adopt and commit to a full plant based diet. Nevertheless, it begs the question, if not from this then what? Excluding accidents and some obscure personal genetic condition, then what could potentially end up killing us?
Garlic is a great ingredient for ear drops. I always ask my dates within the first five minutes what they think about garlic. If they won’t like the fact that I smell like onions and garlic every night and day, it’s not going to work out. I can stop cancer with my breath.
Why do I crave sweets after eating a meal with raw onions and/or garlic?
Fascinating. I’m astonished by this. Another great short video Dr Greger!
Dr.Greger, does eating plant-based food will help to avoid you from being contaminated with new coronavirus or any viruses?
The scientist said that the source of newly transformed coronavirus are from snake & bats. Does it implies if you are not eating meat with blood, will it make you immune to these pathogens?
It’s healthier and less disgusting to not eat animals. Being vegetarian/Vegan is so much nicer and cleaner.
Garlic cloves give me hellish migraine, but powder and granules are tolerated. Read “Foods That Fight Pain” by Dr Neal Barnard
It seems to me to be a bit unethical to give people who already have cancer known cancer causing chemicals, research or not.
This might explain why on some days my bones feel like lead…
Eating a handful of parsley with the garlic cuts down on the exudation of garlic from the lungs and pores.
Okay so what is the best way to prepare garlic to retain and increase nutritional value e.g. with broccoli its NV is increased when sliced and steamed compared to roasting or boiling. So garlic… Steaming, Roasting, Raw Crushed or whole cloves?
My levels are x100 lower on a plant based diet than of those lactovegetarians shown in a video. That’s amazing.
@Jesus Rocha I think it is VERY obvious that is the underlying message of this video…
Where I’m from we usually have toast with half a clove of raw garlic rubbed into the bread, then fresh tomato slices and a drizzle of evoo on top for breakfast, which is an easy way to get in raw garlic. Also, you can easily sub the evoo for avocado slices to make it healthier (and whole wheat bread, of course).
Also minced raw garlic works great in dressings and vinaigrettes.
Dont listen to this its designed to scare you with soft-disclosure and studies that do nothing but confuse you. Youre natural diet is meat and animal products, shop best possible. The Vegan/vegetarian agenda is what these studies lean towards. Stay vigilant.
But i like my food as i like my music… Heavy and Metal \m/
It isn’t AGE that does it, it is years of eating the wrong foods. 70 year old people who have been raw vegans probably have arteries healthier than a lot of 18 year olds.
Minced raw garlic with herbs and lemon juice and or vinegar makes fantastic salad dressings!
“so ancient wisdom can only go so far” You mean my Tiger Penis Soup is doing nothing for me? …. great video, love the books!
I am tired of these not working diets. I basically tried everything and was gaining weight day by day. I recently found this. will this work? like red tea how?? https://reddetox.wordpress.com/
This new format is sooooo distracting. Please stop it and go back to just presenting the data.
I don’t know about that! If I eat garlic I get a sore throat.,..nah! Nonsense, garlic is a poison.
Thanks for the info Dr
Could you please make a video about when is the right time to drink water with a meal. is it ok to drink before, during or after a meal? And if not, how long should we wait before we can drink water before/after a meal? Cause I have gastritis and I’ve heard about when I drink water immediately before, during or after a meal it can dilute my hydrochloric acid in my stomach… and can cause gastritis… is it true Dr? Hope you can help
I’m pretty much covered then. For breakfast oatmeal and raspberries, dinner included a big lump of broccoli and carrots with a fistful of minced garlic. Yum! And making a loaf of banana bread now.
Wow this chanel is so great.I love learning new things like this!
Dr. Greger, I love your content and even changed the way I eat because of you, but you are gradually turning into William Shatner, and that makes me sad.
I mix raw garlic in our salads, and will eat a small clove of it for sinuses, sore throats, etc.
Study man, we the…for the people

Just put about 8 cloves of garlic (different sizes) & juice of 3 whole lemons in my full Ninja food processor of hummus. Our family of 4 (2 littles) ate about 1/2 of it with dinner all healthier than everybody we know thanks to a WFPB diet thanks largely to this guy! ☝
I love fresh cloves of garlic in my food! Very informative:)
What a generous Genius! thanks Doc. Love your last book, a life changer for me. Words can not describe how thankful I am. ps. love your style of speaking!
Dr Greger, do you know of any evidence that taking psyllium husk every day is harmful? thank you
I felt a bad dose of flu coming on last year and it was a strong strain, people suffered for 2-3 weeks. I ate a full bulb of garlic and slept and I was 100% the next day and never got sick. Garlic
I’m curious if there IS a limit to how much raw garlic (minced and sat for 10 minutes before consuming raw) humans can safely eat.
I read something in a study along the lines of a LOT of raw garlic, instead of protecting the liver, actually HARMED.
My issue is I LOVE garlic. Like I can regularly eat 10-20 cloves of raw garlic a day. And have been doing that much raw garlic frequently during quarantine (LOL). I feel fine but worried if it’s actually harming me?
Good morning Dr. Greger. I was wondering if you could comment on this article about cooked meat and brain evolution and growth:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.livescience.com/amp/24875-meat-human-brain.html
What if one can’t digest raw garlic? Would it still be healthy? And how does garlic powder compare to raw garlic?
A conventional grown fruit will always beat a conventionally grown Big Mac, hope that helps. Don’t be afraid of fruits and vegetables.
Rasam This is the ultimate health tonic I drink every day and it’s so tasty as well. You can drink it as a soup or mix it with rice and eat as done traditionally in Tamil homes. I learned the recipe in South India where this soup is a daily staple, had twice a day in most homes especially the strictly vegetarian brahmin homes.
How to make Rasam?
Leftover water from boiled lentils (with some lentils residue is OK) 2 cups
Red Tomatoes 2 (Pureed / squeezed by hand with skin and everything)
Turmeric 1 teaspoon
Pepper powder 1 tablespoon
Cumin powder 1 teaspoon
Organic red chili powder 1 teaspoon
Asafetida powder (a resin available in Indian stores) 1 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Garlic 10 cloves (chopped and set aside)
Fresh Coriander leaves
Ghee
(Can you already feel all the goodness going in reading the ingredients list above? Wait till you prepare it and taste it!)
Mix all the ingredients except garlic, asafetida, coriander leaves in a bowl and bring to boil. Let it boil for about 10-15 minutes until the tomato is cooked. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves, and the garlic asafetida slightly sauteed in ghee. Let it cool down.
Enjoy the soup!
I prefer not to sautee my garlic and asafetida but just add them into the Rasam while taking it off the gas. But some may find the taste too pungent. So sauteeing helps. Also, the ghee is just milk fat and it adds a rich flavor and smell to the soup. It may also help your body absorb the curcumin, piperin etc better as a fat. If you wish you need not use ghee as they use it traditionally.
if only it didnt make my mouth and body reek for 24 hours after eating it. i love it but its not worth the social stigma.
I can’t afford the garlic powder supplements so I just got some cheap 3$ garlic powder in the seasonings section of the grocery store and my question is will this work as well? A tablespoon a day sound good to help lower my cholesterol?
I have never had a flu shot or had the flu, i eat a clove of garlic raw every day and very healhy at age 70!! P.S. i also have no friends!! LOL
Eat it you have nothing to lose. Except for a friend or two.
Buddha said that onions and garlic makes you a hot-head, both in mind making you restless☄️and libido. So it is forbidden for the practicing Saints ♂️ to consume it.
What’s the ratio of garlic to meat that was eaten to show such a significant change?
Why you do not just speak simply with normal tone and simpler presentation? you are just seemed artificial in your voice and scatter the focus of anyone watching your video.
I make fresh salsa with all raw veggies, including garlic. Best way for me to get it down. Plus I can put salsa on a lot of foods!!
So basically why not just stop eating meat…wake up meat eaters
Now look at WHAT fermenting garlic and onions do. If you really want to find something interesting that is.
Don’t be fooled by the Optavia diet aka Medifast. Filled with 90% lead and cadmium, it blocks your cells from being able to take in any nutrients. Thus how you go into a very quick starvation mode. This can cause gastrointestinal issues, very serious ones, cancer and even death. Do your research and know that if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. This is one of those cases.
I’m pretty certain that wasn’t what the video was going for. At the end of the video, it suggests that an increased intake of fruits and vegetables would be required to reduce the damage of carcinogens. Are you implying that eating meat increases risk of cancer and that eating a vegetarian/vegan diet will lead you to a cancer-free life?
You need meat for B12, and omega 3, you need veggies and fruits to balance out the negative affect of the meat.
Just so I’m understanding this, no heat to raw garlic as it will destroy all of the health benefits? So just crush it and swallow raw? Is this the best approach?
Raw garlic is easy to eat by eating it with raisins or other sugars.
did you ever find out whether the garlic is more beneficial raw or cooked?.. i would imagine raw… but, i feel the same as you… Dr. G has made it clear in other vids that some veges are actually better cooked, like broccoli
I can’t be the only weirdo who eats raw garlic and actually enjoys it right? Btw, I highly recommed Young Pharaoh’s recent video. Vernon Coleman and Amazing Polly are other amazing resources for truths on the bigger picture. Stay healthy and educated, family ✊❤
What about freezed fruits and veggies, are they even more nutritious as fresh ones?
Is it even possible to live that healthy? Because almost everything these days are being poisoned, the water, the air, fruits and veggies, so what is safe these days?
I’m all for garlic, but this makes me wonder. If it has such a negative result on your outer skin, then when ingesting it, how does it give one all the advantages? Is this due to it being broken down by the chemicals in the stomach?
Seems more palatable than raw garlic. Any suggestion on a good brand of Garlic powder to use and Thank You So Much for all your work.
I used to eat a whole bunch of garlic as if more was better until I saw this video https://youtu.be/PGMbAQNXlCY. I’m no longer sure what the best guideline is on garlic and health.
Cancer is associated always with Candida infections.
Garlic destroys Candida along with Bicarbonate of Soda intake.
I take garlic and my blood pressure went from 150/85 to 120/65 in about a month. It has stayed down too.
Cool, maybe I can stop taking powdered garlic capsules to get the lead out.
Its also reported and verified by my N=1 experience that garlic, raw, helps GREATLY with sebhorric dermatitis. The steroid creams from the doctor did almost nothing compared to garlic. Love it.
EDIT: when eaten. I would never put that on my skin.
The research in the sources says explicitly that it’s too early to recommend garlic as treatment and more research is needed. Why doesn’t the video say that? Why is jumping to conclusions? It’s misleading.
We need an a-z book of how to prepare every food for the best results.
so just how much fecal waste does the average consumer eat every year, well we don’t know till we put it to the test!
Please do a video on the cancer treatment potential of medicinal mushrooms. I’ll give you a start. And maybe another one that explains how cannabinoids aren’t useful for malignant conditions. Here’s another start. I’m not speaking of THC by itself, nor CBD by itself. I’m speaking of over 100 cannabinoids and over 100 terpenes working in concert in what is known as the Entourage Effect.

The current state and future perspectives of cannabinoids in cancer biology

Additional article information
Abstract
To date, cannabinoids have been allowed in the palliative medicine due to their analgesic and antiemetic effects, but increasing number of preclinical studies indicates their anticancer properties. Cannabinoids exhibit their action by a modulation of the signaling pathways crucial in the control of cell proliferation and survival. Many in vitro and in vivo experiments have shown that cannabinoids inhibit proliferation of cancer cells, stimulate autophagy and apoptosis, and have also a potential to inhibit angiogenesis and metastasis. In this review, we present an actual state of knowledge regarding molecular mechanisms of cannabinoids’ anticancer action, but we discuss also aspects that are still not fully understood such as the role of the endocannabinoid system in a carcinogenesis, the impact of cannabinoids on the immune system in the context of cancer development, or the cases of a stimulation of cancer cells’ proliferation by cannabinoids. The review includes also a summary of currently ongoing clinical trials evaluating the safety and efficacy of cannabinoids as anticancer agents.
so basically all meat = cancer, veggies = anti-cancer? Damn and I thought I was doing well by giving up red meat and only eating fish and poultry. I eat well above the recommended amount of produce but Idk if I can ever go full vegan.
dammit man i want it against heart problems and i want it in milligrams!
I don’t know who does the voice over for these videos but if you could just say “Time to get up darling” so I can add it to my alarm clock I’d be eternally grateful!
I hate the taste of onions and garlic, but I do take a garlic supplement twice per day.
Thank you so much for the depth of your videos and all the credible details; dear Dr. Greger
It’s always going to be better than eating processed “organic” high fat crap or “free range” meat and dairy any day. It’s not the absolute best but it is pretty darn close and you will still feel very good eating fruits and veggies. Don’t let a purist mentality get in the way of your good health.
What’s the mechanism? If its sulphurofaines, then usually the manufacturer of the garlic powder would heat the garlic to pasteurize it. So it could be the same old story where people that eat garlic just have healthier habits or are wealthier.
The only issue with garlic powder is preventing it from turning into one big lump. Even in properly sealed containers it still happens, same with onion powder. Anyone got any advice because it’s so hard trying to chip bits off the lump for cooking.
Pity there’s no (that we know of, so far) any sort of bioactive molecules in plant food or herbs that could bind and help excrete some of those heavy metals. Sort of like a natural chelation.
ABSO-fucking-LUTELY, Dr. Greger!..eat those fruits & veggies everyone…I am so tired of losing dear friends to cancer!
I wonder where black fermented garlic stands? If it would have same effects as raw?
“Raw garlic: lung cancer risk may be reduced by 44% in non-smokers, while it may be reduced by 30% in smokers.”
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4873399/
Study limitations: A total of 399 cases (89% response rate) and 466 controls (85% response rate) participated in the study (suffers small sample size). The study was a self-reported questionnaire case-control study rather than an RCT double blind placebo control study or systematic review study. Higher quality studies with larger sample size are needed to confirm or challenge these observations.
A previous systematic review study of RCT studies from 2012 concluded insufficient evidence on cancer risk reduction.
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/fct.12000
However a 2000 meta-analyses study suggests a protective effect on colorectal and stomach cancers.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11010950/
Another systematic review from 2001 suggests “Low study power, lack of variability in garlic consumption categorization within studies and poor adjustment for potential cofounders may limit the reliability of any conclusions regarding garlic supplements. However, an indication of publication bias was also found by visual inspection of a funnel plot and in a log-rank test (P = 0.004). Evidence from available studies nevertheless suggests a preventive effect of garlic consumption in stomach and colorectal cancers. The study limitations indicate the need for more definitive research and improved nutritional epidemiologic analyses of dietary data.”

How should i cook garlic to avoid the reduced repsonse-time from eating garlic while getting the benefits?
So foods that stink prevent cancer? should i smell my farts or is this different?

i predict that eventually, more and more of it will become available as farmers begin to learn how to mass produce without dangerous pesticides… i too have begun to grow my own as well… i’ve got my 1st compost pile cooking as i write… my cilantro seeds are sprouting!
I love this video, because it scientifically explains why you need to consume garlic and flavonoids in flavonjams:
Active ingredients of 90 lbs fruits in one jar!
Very high antioxidant content
Unique jam form for maximum absorbency
No preservatives and great taste
Google: flavonjams
Could you do a Nutritional Facts on ovarian health and ovarian cancers?
Interestingly, in 2003 the South Koreans touted that garlic-rich Kimchi cured SARS. Perhaps Kimchi played a role in South Korea’s phenomenal statistics against COVID-19. After all, garlic is a Nitric Oxide enhancer (NO is an antiviral) and it contains an antiviral biomolecule known as cis-p-coumaric acid. There definitely needs to be a study.
I think I’d rather stay to my meat based fiber free food. Especially now, during this covid-19 season. Seems to be much better for my immune system.
a glass of spring water, half a lemon, 3 cloves of fresh garlic, parsley or other green vegetable that contains chlorophyll, blend and drink everything together, you can sweeten with honey, there will be no garlic effect (the smell absorbs green and lemon) for over a year of treatment, great effects.
wash your non organic foods well.. and yes most pesticides arnt even that bad for you.. its the herbicides to really worry about.. also dont eat non organic root veggies.. the roots filter all that stuff..think of it like a water filter… when the filters done.. you dont use it for anything.. its garbage
Once a day I take 1 large clove of garlic and crush it. Let it sit 15 minutes to build allicin content. Then dice the garlic well and put on a spoon and swallow with a little water right before a meal.
Cool information. The voice over kind of reminded me of the way Agent Smith spoke in The Matrix. =)
Top 100 list and U speeded it up and expecting us like super computers to read them at 1000xd speed.
Can you do a video on getting rid of mucus in the lungs?? I know you got a long video on pandemics but my friends and family don’t wanna watch that
Drinking my garlic, apple cider vinegar and ginger drink as I watch this!
Love garlic but hate the halitosis and garlicky smelling perspiration. How about benefits of Ginger??? (Smells better)
garlic, turmeric, cinnamon, cumins, celery seeds, black peppers, anardana are used in every soup or dal made in every home in india. glad people are recognizing importance of these
But how do they know it is lower absorbtion and not the extra fiber in the diet helping the body to dump more toxic waste down the toilet?
Or maybe a combination of both?
I don’t understand how can someone promote something as toxic as garlic it’s a trap
I can confirm even as a young man I had problems with stiffness…
Eat raw garlic and people will social distance from you by force.
Could be due to lower ability to excrete from shift in amino acids. Glycine is known to increase glutathione and thus detox. Also methionine and taurine. Hard to get these in plants.
Can you tell me if fresh garlic would have the same effect as dry for heart health and weight loss? Thanks.
So I’m assuming that if you use garlic powder how 99% of the world does by adding it while your cooking will kill off any health benefits? Seems that is the case with many plant based good for us stuff.
For everyone asking about raw garlic, it’s not like you have to either or. Just keep both around and have fresh garlic when you can and add the powdered when you don’t have time to chop and mince.
Hi PBL! Thx for pulling this gem of information out of the huge pile of helpful advice Dr. Greger offers! Just started adding two cloves of raw garlic a day to my savory meal, (always cooked with it) so for me it’s timely advice. An add on tip: If you crush/chop the garlic cloves 15 or more minutes before eating, it allows more allicin to form. Thanks again, always so good to hear your voice, cheery intro/outro music, and valuable information nuggets!
Why isn’t garlic in the daily dozen list? I mean, why is it it does not have a separate item just for it?
I chase 1/4 of a teaspoon of Costco garlic granules with some juice every night, and it prevents me from getting a cold or the flu. I’ve been doing this for years and years.
I take a clove of garlic and an inch of ginger, mince and swallow with acv and 8 oz of water each morning and again at bedtime.
This garlic should be cooked or eaten raw? We know from your previous videos that difference in effect may be vast depending on if food item is eaten cooked or raw, or in ensemble with other foods. I miss this raw/cooked information in your videos alot. Other than that, thank you very much for vital information you bring to all of us:) best wishes…
Raw Garlic is a cure for covid 19 its anti fungal anti viral and anti bacterial. It cured me
I’d like to ask whether the benefits from consuming larger amounts of non-organic fruits and vegetables outweigh the risks from the pesticides from it
thank you, I really appreciate your videos
We always have roasted garlic stocked in the fridge and eat it with everything, spread on toasted bread with avocado, and etc, not sure if it loses some of its nutrients, but definitely tastes great! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
From London. UK. I eat only raw garlic, lemon, ginger. I have this on empty stomach. I am very strong girl &slim.
Love garlic. But raw garlic gives me insomnia. I cant sleep one minute after eatting raw garlic. I was hoping he would touch on this subject because I can’t find much info about garlic and insomnia. Does anyone have a similar experience?
What concentrations of these “mutagenic chemicals found in cooked meat” such as PhIP were used in these in-vitro studies? Because the amount of PhIP found in meat is… very VERY low. Only a few nanograms per gram. Yes a Nanogram, which it should be emphasised is one BILLIONTH of a gram. Compare with smoking which deposits GRAMS of carcinogens directly onto the lungs which directly damage the lungs. This is as trace amounts as it gets. For example, you can easily end up getting 100’000 times the concentration of mercury in vegetables.
EDIT: I took another look at your graph, behind the goofy animal pictures it’s clear, it’s over 100 micro-moles… which would be equivalent to 0.022 GRAMS of PhIP. And this is in EACH CELL. 100 nanograms diluted amongst 60-80kg of wet body mass… somehow comes to a concentration one millions times HIGHER rather than one million times LOWER.
The colon cancer theory doesn’t make sense as PhIP is NOT HIGHLY MUTAGENIC when ingested. It must be absorbed into the blood and be converted in the liver, so PhIP’s harm will be diluted though out the entire body. So why would it then go back to the colon to concentrate there?
The rat studies that proved this is a carcinogen were fed diets with PhIP levels of 200 parts per MILLION. That’s over 10’000 times higher doses! This is the same trick that was used to castigate MSG, they made rodents eat massive quantities of MSG, the equivalent to a human being force fed over a Kilogram of MSG. We know that giving extremely high doses of even essential micronutrients causes cancer, like administering very high doses of Vitamin E actually causes cancer. But that’s 10’000x the expected dose.
The dose makes the poison.
A few grams of salt per day is vital for survival. Drinking a pint of saturated salt solution and you’ll die in agony.
What is so unusual about PhIP is that it’s carcinogenic form is ACTIVELY CREATED in the liver from a substance humans have been exposed to for a long long time (long before humans were humans, even our human ancestors who cooked meat over fire), yet the liver may also actively neutralise PhIP, depending on gene expression which is hugely varied from person. If this causes so many cancers, why is the body making a supposedly significant carcinogen more mutagenic when the liver is capable of making it entirely inert? This obviously isn’t as simple as many are making out.
And PhIP needs very HIGH temperatures for a LONG time. So a crispy fried batter won’t make PhIP as that’s starch (no creatine), only where the meat itself is charred and only in the charred part. How often do you eat meat where the muscle fibres are literally blackened?
non-randomized study likely confounded by unreported smoking. I would be interested in a high quality randomized controlled study.
Who is the voice over from? I don’t usually like British accents, but that one is quite delicious.
DOC NOT ONLY FOR WAMPIRES hahahah I love garlic in my country is a tradition Abruces, Italy
garlic, ginger, onions and mushrooms… the base of almost everything we cook for dinner.
From recollection of the information in one viewing The good Dr did mention Roast chicken, Baked fish and some way of preparing bacon that caused the carcinogens IQ & Pip(???)! Though, I do agree with you, there needs to be more clarification of how the carcinogens are made and how to avoid preparing food in the manner that will produce them. Or at least a link to the info as most viewing it are lay persons in the field of nutrition that would not have a clue on how to find that sort of info.
Garlic is best raw, after crushing and being left for 10 minutes for allicin to form. 3 cloves a day is suggested limit, as 4 or more starts getting too strong and can destroy stomach bacteria. Garlic is approximately 1/50 the strength of penicillin.
Awesome. Saving us money and our health again based on the (credible) science. Thx!
What would we do without spicy stuff that make vegetables barely tolerable.. right?
To avoid garlic breath, take a couple of cloves first thing in the morning.chop them in tiny pieces, this releases the allicin, cover with honey wait 15 minutes then swallow,
do not chew.when you swallow the garlic on an empty stomach it doesn’t start to digest until it isin your intestines.
When you chew it mixes with your saliva and begins to digest immediately causing the dreaded “garlic breath”.
Wait half an hour, then eat your normal breakfast.
I’ve been doing this for four years and have never had a problem.
Waddya got to lose.
I
Any suggestions to get the artery benefits without the body odor?
Me everyday covering all my home cooking in garlic and onion powder bc flavvvor
Great question, i would have to say YES but washing the produce, peeling if necessary would also help. Although in some instances there is alot of nutrition within the skin. Such a shame organic food is not widely available and affordable for all. I’m currently growing my own.
So it would be optimal to cook my food like usual (with garlic and onion) and then mix in some additional garlic powder and some form of onion afterwards?
wondering what would happen if those pescovegetarians cut out fish as well
The levels in hair dont necessarily show that the people were consuming more heavy metals with meat. The detox pathways could’ve been working less efficiently which would show a low level in their hair because the metals are being stored within the body’s tissues instead of being excreted. Levels in hair also dont show the bodies burden. A high level could show in hair, but you actually have a low level in your body and vice versa.
What do vaccines and pharmecuticals do to your health. Nothing that an MD can’t fix with more drugs. Huh?
Apparently garlic is poisonous and brakes down cells this video is lieing slightly for what reason I do not know
What about Nature Made Odor Control Garlic from Costco? It seems to be garlic powder pressed into pill form. I am glad I didn’t go with the expensive aged stuff.
I apply garlic directly to my face. It works wonders for spot treating acne. Stops the progression. Ive never experienced burns. It stings if the face was recently washed with baking soda. but thats it.
As someone who practically only eats stir fried minced garlic (from a jar, not pickled), but who eats about a serving per day, I wonder if all that “nutritional goodness” which is leaving the garlic is actually being absorbed by the oil and other foods in the stir fry, which is why the original garlic matter tests so low after cooking. Just a thought.
Looks like I’m going to be sneaking in half a clove of raw garlic when I’m preparing them for cooking.
Awesome! More videos on heavy metals! Such a widespread issue
I knew it: bone broth glows in the dark. Slow cooked poison.
how much garlic should be eaten and does ıt natter ıf ıt ıs raw or cooked?
My question is:
Do black garlic extract works?
Finding dried garlic tablets here in Germany isn’t actually easy.
I guess customers look for non smelly ways to assume garlic and I must say that I’d also prefer not to stink which is what happens with normal dried garlic.
I go through at least half an onion and several cloves a day. Yes I smell.
thanks, well i’ve determined that shambala is a state of mind… it is when there is complete joy, balance & inner peace in your heart… i experience that a lot more since i’ve been eating a mostly plant based diet… and the cilantro growing experience is definitely rewarding… i can’t wait to grow more stuff!
Would eating garlic daily provide any prevention benefit against COVID-19?
Even though people complain about my smell, I eat raw garlic every day. I love the way it tastes, too.
I eat a clove of sliced raw garlic every day. Nice to know it’s good for me!
Are the effects greater using raw garlic? I’ve taken it for colds etc. Thanks, really interesting.:)
Id love to see the heavy metal content of the those eating a 100% carnivorous diet in 5 years!
gasp! over half a million subscribers now…. underrated still but happy to see this channel gaining the recognition it deserves!

Iron Maiden has increased my health almost as much as going vegan has.
That’s just too scientific. I don’t get it. Just simplify the recommendations and tell me what to do.
Try the garlic powder from Frontier Co-op, far superior than the typical grocery store garlic. You will be amazed.
This would be more helpful if it was charting vegans. Also would be helpful to show specific foods that helped to remove heavy metals like, chlorella or cilantro, etc.
Me over here with a cold for the first time in a long time and I eat garlic everyday
Yet another reason to eat a lot of whole plant foods, especially garlic.
Stiff arteries may be due to lack of copper. It is in Turkeys.
I usually eat 2 raw cloves of garlic every day. On the rate occasions that I don’t have, I don’t feel right. I imagine it does something that makes you feel good and healthy too.
Shhhhh, don’t tell anyonethe secret to muppets’ immortality is raw garlics and beets
I wonder how garlic preserved in honey would do? Going off what is said here it’s probably best to stick with raw.
Does Trump know about this? There’s a mental image for you…. Bunker Boy shoving garlic up his butt!
I’ll stick to one clove. I want the balance of health benefits without the body order and bad breath.
So i have to eat garlic and onions raw to utilize its potent effects, preferrably within 10 minutes… When I was in the Philippines, a dipping sauce that is often used is soya sauce, chopped garlic and onion with a bit of chili. Recommend that as a means.. Any more ideas welcome 😉
I eat a large raw bulb everyday in my salad dressing along with a large piece of raw ginger! It tastes amazing!!! Love the vids, keep em coming.: )
Any advice on foods that have a direct impact on the Coronavirus
I never thought to rub garlic on my face or skin but good to know. lol
Since going plant based eating for over 2 years, my body microbes have changed and garlic breath does not linger after I eat raw garlic. If someone does get garlic breath, eating popcorn or ground up flax seeds help eliminate the smell. I think that the dry abrasion of popcorn or flaxseed help scrap off the garlic juices from the mouth.
Eating plant based with garlic & leafy greens every day, and a few weeks after watching this video I got a cold and despite sufficient rest with regular garlic I was still sick in bed for 5 days thus far:(
Not saying this invalidates the evidence presented, just sharing my experience.
I’m actually enjoying this new style of video. You’re very expressive and it’s great!
Does avoiding heavy metal music helps reduce the heavy metals in the body? we didn’t know UNTIL we put it to the test! A randomized, double blind, placebo controlled study… LOL XD JK
Every morning, I finely chop a large garlic bulb and let it sit on the cutting board for 10 minutes. The air oxidizes the garlic and forms Allicin. I then mix it with a half teaspoon of warmed Manuka honey, and down it goes.
Thanks for all your videos Dr Greger. Is broccoli juice have high dose of sulforaphane? Try to fight bladder cancer. Thanks
What protects you from Vampires and Cancer (cellular vampires)? Garlic. Awesome.
I would love to know what the actual ingredient is that allows garlic to do what he purports it to do. Here’s how I think about this. Item (food/garlic) gets taken into stomach, subjected to acid to break down into nutrients and absorbed through the gut wall. What is the item that WAS garlic, now is allowed through the gut wall to have the effect on arteries? It ain’t garlic!
I sprinkle it on my salads, but it is one of the few things I don’t put in my smoothies or oatmeal.
I have read sbout Bovine meat snd mili factors
BMMFSfound in Milk and beef and this make cansers too.For more on the benefits of garlic, see https://nutritionfacts.org/topics/garlic/
Yup garlic and onions is in my diet. “Thanks MOM for mincing them in the rice and I NEVER KNEW it was in there LOL” THEN when I was in my 20s she said “u know you’ve been eating garlic and onions since u been a kid right” she showed me how she prepped it in the rice, I was speechless.
When covid 19 start I got honey & garlic mix for nearly one year so I feel bad chest lot of stuff was coming out so I tried my honey & garlic so sweet love it I finish jar with in 3 days I feel so good every thing clean & healed
there are a lot of studies pointing to meat contributing to cancer &… in fact, i just heard that outside the US (the UK i think?)… health officials have suggested that people limit their consumption of things like steak to 1 8oz serving per week
Excellent, thank you. I didn´t catch if black garlic is not as good as white if taken raw?
I want learn more about nutrition and health. I am reader and i already read how not to die. But I want to get more clear and can you please recommend me the book which I start reading to get my nutritional knowledge strong?

I bought myself a blood pressure monitor and had some pretty worrying readings, the highest reading being 162/112. I decided to try my old ‘lyme disease’ treatment of pickled olives and garlic cloves to try to reduce it. 14 days in and my last reading was 118/88, who needs tablets when mother nature provides cheap and tasty treatment.
I mash avacado, then add turmeric, salt, pepper, cumin, maybe some cayenne pepper and finally add a clove or two of chopped garlic. Yum!
I click the like button before it even loads because I know he did the research and am grateful
Dr greger looking good each and every day with the supreme vegan diet!
I often make hummus with chickpeas, apple cider, chili, raw red onion and a few cloves of garlic. Add some sea salt and tahini if desired…no more colds!
These clips are getting better and better. He is also funnier in front of the camera.
I have been listening to your 2 audiobooks, how not to die and how not to diet, i downloaded them via audible.ca
I have been following you for 4 years now.
I JUST BOUGHT your book: how not to die the cookbook. It will probably be my new favorite book. It think it is a must have in every single home.
Thanks for everything! Continue with your amazing work/passion!
PD: I wish you could also make a book in which you explain how to prepare food for 1 week for busy people who like to use one day a week to do everything for the whole week, or maybe a video on this.
Greetings from a peruvian living in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada
I love a slice of raw onion on my sandwich, or in my salad. Same goes for a bit of raw garlic, love the stuff!
Raw garlic and onions are medicinal. They are are powerful medicine and like all medicines….they should not be eaten on a daily basis….t hey could eventually do you a lot of harm……
Love the “put it to the test” guy! Changed my life by changing my diet, thank you!
Good to know! I put raw red onions, garlic and ginger in my salads… Yum! Yum!
yep, answer seems obvious to me: just quit eating the carcinogenic meats/poultry/fish etc.! Thank you Doc!
Love the video but I must admit I find the style of delivery very distracting.
I bet garlic would give Covid 19 a good run. I believe in it. I eat some every day. It’s in my homemade hummus spread that I use all the time. I also grow garlic and use the greens in salads
Interesting! I had no idea that raw garlic was so much better than cooked. Thank you for the tips
All crap. Don’t smoke, eat a balanced diet. Plenty of exercises. Avoid pollutants and pick your parents very carefully. this is as good as anything. A balanced and holistic approach

Thanks for all the amazing videos! I put together a list of all the tips you have presented on how to prevent illness and on how to boost your immune function: https://youtu.be/e_KKgVNYW3o

report these psychos for misleading
Maybe…just maybe….it could help prevent this novel corona virus. Or reduce the death rate after infection?
In the morning on an empty stomach as a first meal/drink I press raw garlic with a garlic press and then swallow it and immediately drink some freshly pressed lemon juice with a bit water afterwards. And then wait for at least 20min before having breakfast. I feel like this is a healthy basic thing to do:)
Not a fan of the new format of Dr. Greger waving his hands around, juking his head around etc. I come for the science not a floor show. Love what you guys do and love Dr. Greger but this new format is distracting and takes away from the message which is the science.
They put b.s. into garlic powder… Fillers.. read ingredients
Mince organic raw garlic and organic raw ginger with golden paste, take a 1/2 tsp twice a day.
I been sucking on garlic since corona..
My man wont like it but im here for a long time and a good time
What about pickled garlic? I buy pre peeled garlic that tends to get moldy before I finish them all, so when the jar gets to half empty, I add vinegar to prevent mold. The acid rather quickly turns the garlic green/blue. Any idea if I am preserving, killing or not effecting garlic’s benefits when I do this??
I will continue to take my garlic by mouth, thank you Dr Greger! XD
“It might be speculated that…” is not strong enough wording. I wouldn’t bet my health on that kind of weak speculation.
Makes me wonder about all the rage about bone broth people are consuming
Is he talking about a teaspoon of dry garlic powder mixed with water or an actual supplement in tablet form? Confusing because he talks about using a teaspoon of dry garlic powder, but the tablet is mentioned too, but then he says the supplements do not work.
after every time i eat no matter if it’s healthy or junk my stomach bulges is that normal and healthy
Phonic is right, bake, boil and broil ( but create no BLACK char when you cook) amazing video
Thank you my London friend! Love these nuggets! Garlic is truly a Wonder food!
I love garlic, but had to stop eating it because all of a sudden became nauseated by it—I felt poisoned. We guessed it may be the sprays put on them by the Chinese farmers. So we started growing our own. Shazam! I can eat garlic again! And it also kept the vampire population down in our garden! Win win!
An excellent video doctor Greger, thank you so much. I will be sure to pass it around to friends and clients. Doc Blake
I love you Dr Greger, thank you for all that you do Now it’s time to go on Joe Rogan’s podcast!
The information in these free videos is absolutely amazing! However the speech pattern it’s going to take me some time to get used to:-)
True miracle stuff here. Organosulfur compounds and possible mechanism of garlic in cancer https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3731019/ also Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Sulfur-Containing Compounds from Garlic https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3491620/
I reckon Dr Michael Greger should express some respect for the ancient physicians instead of making silly comments…It is true that they have not access to the scientific date that he has.But that does not mean they lacked wisdom.
Hippocrates, the revered physician, prescribed garlic for a variety of conditions. Garlic was given to the original Olympic athletes in Greece, as perhaps one of the earliest “performance enhancing” agents. It is of interest that cultures that developed without contact with one another came to similar conclusions about the efficacy of garlic. Modern science is tending to confirm many of the beliefs of ancient cultures regarding garlic, defining mechanisms of action and exploring garlic’s potential for disease prevention and treatment.

Garlic is warm, executive and diuretic. It is executive and diuretic because of its pure quality. It is good for the body, though bad for the eyes. For by making a considerable purgation of the body, it dulls the sight. When boiled it is weaker than when raw. It creates flatulence because it stops the pneuma [i.e. A vital breath]. [Hippocratic Corpus, Regimen 2.54.1; edition: Joly, 1972: 51-52].
In the context of sexuality, it is also interesting to note that women participating in the women-only Athenian festival Skira consumed large quantities of garlic. The explanation given for this practice is that the smell was supposed to keep husbands away; in the words of the historian Philochorus (third century BCE), ‘they ate garlic in order to abstain from sex, so that they would not smell of perfume’ (FGRH 328 F 89; see Parker, 2005: 174). https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4469375/
What about garlic power? How much would I have to take for it to be the same as whole cloves? And what are the amounts of nutrients in garlic power compared to whole crushed cloves? Thanks in advance, have a good day.

You should make a separate video just on the safety sides of not putting garlic on your skin and then put that in the title so people find it because I did not even know that this is a thing it’s amazing that people would ever think that it’s okay to put garlic on your skin.
I did put garlic on my rash once, and it did cure the rash… but the blister was… you can’t imagine.
Garlic suppositories…the ol’ Frenchies were onto something all along!
Raw garlic is an excellent way to promote automatic social distancing.
Vitamins and minerals can be confusing but this has me understand them easy! Thanks
Love the new video format with Dr. Gregor showing his face with the pop up studies and info.
Garlic is well known a blood thinner so it’s of no surprise it lowers blood pressure. However if you stop taking it does the BP go back up??
Shooter. Your breath smells like shit… That why I think you eat pieces of shit for breakfast.
Allow crushed or chopped garlic to stand for about 10 minutes before cooking. This allows time for the enzyme alliinase to create allicin, the source of bioactive compound.

The implications for social inequality: people with the lowest quality diet-lower SES-are likely to experience the effects the most.
@ people in the comments
You don’t have to eat raw garlic and onions if you don’t like it. It’s not as if you don’t do it, you suddenly die young 😉
Just eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and other whole foods and you’ll be fine. Don’t stress about every little detail. It’s not going to expand your life that much anymore if you already eat healthy.
The average age that people get to where I live is 82 and those people are actually still quite healthy. They ate way worse then people eating a mostly whole food plants diet.
When cooking a stew or casserole, after peeled put the whole pieces of garlic in. Delicious!!
Absolutely love the new format! Thanks so much for quality scientific nutrition info.
too much information in one video, too much interpretation of the data without proper and detailed inspection of the studies, although I love your videos and your approach,
Doesnt this mean, that I just have to eat my meat together with enough healthy stuff and the whole negative effects of the meat are gone?
I can’t believe how fast someone deleted my comment and in the middle of the night for that matter. I was respectful and caring about the Dr. Health. Not apparently you guys don’t allow opposing views
I think I’m allergic to raw garlic. It gives me a headache if eaten raw. But not cooked or garlic powder. But cooking destroys most of the good stuff. What gives? Any suggestions?
I usually use minced garlic in a jar. I use a lot of it, I love the taste and love garlic. After this video I bought some fresh garlic cloves, chopped them up into little pieces and put them in my salad tonight. Whew! That’s strong stuff!!
I can see how garlic can be used as an antiseptic for inside the body! Now I’ve got a Vikings share of garlic breath.
I was hoping to see a comparison between garlic powder and garlic. I always wonder how much garlic would you need to have an effect, I guess a tea spoon of dry garlic is much less than one clove… or is it much more?
I’ll keep having it in most foods anyway.
I just juiced an entire bulb of garlic and put it in my green juice
Tahini, raw garlic, lemon juice and water: blended. Add herbs you like or not. Simple, tasty, delicious and healthy.
Whoever is reading this i wish you a long lasting life, good health and protection. God bless
I crush 2 fat cloves on a piece of toast (let it oxidize for five minutes) with a little coconut oil, turmeric, and black pepper, each night, just before bed. Burns going down, but I’ve noticed many benefits since beginning this regime.
So if most of the lead comes from the bone meal or feces added to feed then as far as lead poisoning is concerned it would be better to eat grass fed beef or pastured organic chicken than a vegan diet but,,,,,, let’s put it to the test! Yup! Dr Gregor clearly states in the video that veggies have more lead than meat, especially meat from confined, commercially bred animals eating a contaminated diet. So if you really want to be healthy eat a little humanely raised and slaughtered meat once in awhile! Not to much though! We still have to be concerned about sustainability!!
I juice carrots, parsley,a large onion and 3 large cloves of garlic twice a week.
I’ve read it somewhere that Lady Diana, The Princess of Wales, had strictly forbidden the use of garlic in her diet, and that the Queen does not eat garlic, and has specifically banned the ingredient from Buckingham Palace’s kitchen. Only goes to show what dumb imbeciles these Royal parasites are! Eh?

Results
Mean blood pressure was significantly reduced by 5.0±2.1 mmHg (P=0.016) systolic, and in responders by 11.5±1.9 mmHg systolic and 6.3±1.1 mmHg diastolic compared to placebo (P<0.001). Central hemodynamic-measures tended to improve in the garlic group more than in the placebo group, including central blood pressure, central pulse pressure, mean arterial pressure, augmentation pressure, pulse-wave velocity, and arterial stiffness. While changes in other cardiovascular markers did not reach significance due to small numbers in subgroups with elevated levels, trends in beneficial effects of garlic on the inflammatory markers TNFα, total cholesterol, low-density lipid cholesterol, and apolipoproteins were observed. Aged garlic extract was highly tolerable and acceptable, and did not increase the risk of bleeding in patients on blood-thinning medication.
Conclusion
Our trial suggests that aged garlic extract is effective in reducing peripheral and central blood pressure in a large proportion of patients with uncontrolled hypertension, and has the potential to improve arterial stiffness, inflammation, and other cardiovascular markers in patients with elevated levels. Aged garlic extract was highly tolerable with a high safety profile as a stand-alone or adjunctive antihypertensive treatment.
So apparently those AGE’S do work. Or not? Or they do? Or not? Or they do? Or not? Or they do? Or not? Or they do? Or not? Or they do?
The question is did you use organic garlic? Or did you use GMO garlic with glyphosate in it?
what about fermented garlic and onions? Like in kimchi? Does it still work then?
Garlic is so useful. I have killed like 6 vampires with it, and that’s without even considering what it does to a good stir fry.
Learn to make soy sauce based pickled garlic in Korean recipe.
Easy to make and super healthy.
Love your videos but you really need to stop moaning when you speak (“hmmmm” and “ehhrrrr” every two phrases)
I heard eating garlic would prevent mosquitos from biting you. Oh what a total bullshit that was.
What about fresh garlic? I wish he had compared powder against fresh. What’s so great about powder? I eat and cook with lots of fresh garlic.
Sorry for the inconvenience, Dr. Greger, but the Spanish subtitles of the latest videos have been out of sync.
I hope they can be fixed.
Thank you for such valuable information.
I was just getting ready to get up from my lunch eating spot and prepare a clove to have with my beans, chickpeas, kale, and nettle hash. This video was literally the first in the queue for recommended videos.
what about garlic powder? i think most people most use the powder
Thx. Dr. G…….
Whole plant based foods on Instagram = mikewakethefoodup
Garlic garlic, it destroys my stomach. Of all foods, it literally destroys it. I can’t eat it and I like it, but I can’t eat it. I can’t eat sulphure foods. Beans are bad also, but nothing like garlic.
I don’t quite get what he is saying about the elephant garlic and garlic garlic, the data only looks alittle different but then again not sure what I am seeing, I wish he had said what he meant instead of garlic garlic as elephant garlic is garlic…..
I have relatives in the med community having issues medically, they trust their own, and will die accordingly, what a brave bunch of idiots they are! Big Pharma doesn’t give a crap about how to heal you or anyone else, good health makes no money. Research nutitionfacts.org. And heal thyself!
BIG Garlic stimulates also modern slavery…..and besides people are eating garlic like
in everything but still cancer rates don’t drop in the population, doesn it?
Feeding animal meat and bones back to the herbivores we eat? Feces too? Holy hell! I want to avoid heavy metals, certainly, but I want to Run The FAway! from that toxic waste dump the animal agriculture industry is bio-concentrating in food animals. See 1:22
Fabulous, growing your own is such a rewarding experience, afterall it’s what we are made to do but society in the West has become so lazy and ignorant of the basic principles that keep human beings ALIVE on the inside, not just functioning and going through the motions. LOVE the yt name by the way!! If you ever make it to Shambala let me know. It’s probably based on a real place and not just fiction.:-O
Someone once said, ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away; an onion a day keeps EVERYONE away!’…which works out GREAT for social distancing! Hahahaa! Anyway, thanks for doing the research and reposting! Stay well, all!!
I eat raw garlic every day so do my 2 dogs,, I never have any Vaccines, I never have any flu symptoms either! It’s keeps dogs free from parasites, I still worm them every 12 weeks!
Indians eat ginger, garlic and turmeric in every meal:)
glad that the west is finally opening up to using them and benefitting from these ingredients.
i have a stupid question, how do i eat raw garlic? it´s edible just like that or taste like hell?
