I find that when you just eat good food, high fibre, no fried food, drink plenty of water, exercise, you’ll have a good solid bowel movement. You eat crappy foods well…you pay for it, it’s not nice but you do have to think about that before you eat something. Eating the right food really cleans out your insides, and healthy food can be just as fun as unhealthy food, cantaloupe, watermelon, strawberries, banana, mango, beetroot, tomatoes, long beans, kefir, brown rice, chicken. I allow myself two days of treats, one day for maybe custard after dinner and the other I’ll have pizza or some burgers, usually Friday and Saturday, and if you combine this food with your usual fibre diet then better still, eat healthy even when you’re not eating healthy.

Anecdotal, but I had sibo for about 2 years. In late 2018 I made the connection that after eating vegetables I would eat several cups of sauteed zucchini, chard in soup, carrots, and salad greens every dinner made me feel horrible. removed all vegetables, and within three days by boating was 80% reduced. But I upped my fruit, cherries, apples, grapes. I felt horrible again, then I read about fructose malasorption and the fructose-to-glucose ratio and about fodmaps and fructans, and I cut out all fruit too. I have been no fruit, no vegetables for over a year and I never thought I would be able to eat and not feel sick and bloated but I can:) I still react if I eat anything with even dried celery in it.

Great job! I also want to share my secret for better skin. Check what chemicals are in your products. My products were full of toxins, especially formaldehyde (EDTA, Dimethicone, etc). Even my shampoo and makeup, my body soap, laundry soap, etc had tons of chemicals. I’ve stopped using all that stuff and incorporated organic as little as possible chemical products. I also bought a shower filter and really I can see the difference in my skin… my neck and legs for sure but everywhere is softer… Your skin talks to you all time, actually your body, which is using a language… I think we all try so hard to get fit and eat cleanly but if we’re using products that are keeping our skin and bodies too busy trying to keep out the bad toxins then there’s no time for them to repair… I seen a huge difference and tightening… even in areas I thought would never tighten up. Drinking pure lemon juice with water only no sugar before bedtime really helps. I drink it with little bit cold water. 99 percent effective! My stomach less bloated and my lower abdomen whole stomach actually flattens. Plus i get clearer skin. No joking.

I’ve not ever been able to burp and im 16 years old. I’ve burped like 10 times in my whole life and they’re only ever tiny and random out of no where theres no correlation to certain foods.
I get this gurgle type noise almost like a bubble in my throat and I get lots of those I think instead of burps. I get incredibly bloated I’m fairly skinny and it’s not fat on my stomach, it gets very airy literally inflated like a balloon and looks ridiculous in proportion to my skinny body.

Were going to go to the doctors and try and see a throat specialist but I’m worried it wont be taken seriously the only “cure” I’ve heard of is a throat evaluation and then a botox injection in a specific throat muscle that may be causing my inability to burp but I need to get checked out first and I know I’ll be told to try everything uve already done and probably not be given any help.

Tip reduce bloating: work out 3x a week. Get 60min outside time. Drink plenty of clean water. Don’t over eat. Always helped me out.
I’m not vegan, but eat many plant based (or nearly plant based-like adding a small handful of cheese or a runny fried egg on mixed veggies and grains. One thing I found, can’t handle a lot of cruciferous veggies (like broccoli or brussel sprouts). I still eat, but eat them in small servings, cooked and one at a time. Might be helpful to some. It’s pretty easy to try this. Seems like a lot of people are bothered by a lot of these.

Moderation, cuZ as much as they show the bad in foods, there is also good in foods, hence the moderation, ya gotta spell out the good w these, not just the bad, that don’t teach people anything, but t fear foods, no no, I am living proof of it, w moderation, u can eat anything, an an w a bit of forethought an plannin, ya can eat a fair amount of them foods, and actually not hav too many problems, providing ya recall the rules of moderation, and how ya mixes the foods as they go into yer mouth, but, to do that, ya wud hav t change yer beliefs som, ya wud hav t believe that there is som good in these foods, moderation is important in diet
I figured out that whenever I eat too much carb in my meal, my tummy bloats like crazy and I end up fart a lot. Lame but true haha. My lower stomach could stretch from 72 to 89cm after such meals Luckily, it is likely to get back to normal after a night of about 16 hours fasting. So basically I do intermittent fasting and lower my carb intake now. It works for me

I have never been bloated on a vegan diet since 2 years ago when I started, also after 1-2 years of reducing every some months the different animal products I used to eat and adding new ones as a replacement. But i honestly think that maybe it is because since I was a kid my parents fed me with a mostly plant based diet with animal products as a side and not as the main dish, and not even eating them every day, and also following these diet in my adult life until I changed. So my digestive system has always been used to these foods and did not get stressed with the gradual change i did and the increased fibre intake and obviously with my current vegan diet. The thing with legumes is consistency. If you it a small amount everyday you body gets used to it and therefore feel less bloated and gassy. In fact studies have shown that people eating a western diet are consuming not enough legumes!

As a vegan of 24 years this summer (and a follower of yours!), my mind is sort of blown that this went on for nearly thirty minutes, and the simplest, easiest thing to try was never mentioned: look at your water intake. When piling in a bunch more fiber, even a vegan of nearly a quarter of a century (who may have gone on a kale salad bender when they got super trendy) may experience excess bloating. Something needs to help get all that fiber through. Many people transitioning to plant based diets go from low-water and low-fiber to high fiber and still low water. It may not be as deep as all this if you’re not even finishing a liter a day and you’re eating a ton of fiber, you’re going to have a problem.

I experienced no bloating if you’re constantly vegan for about quite a time (6-8 month for minimum)
To digest just plantbased food, and therefore a huge amount of these as the gut is yet familiar with, you’re gutflora needs to adapt to this and besides that the rest of the bacteria, which are not needed anymore aren’t really happy about loosing their job and their “food”.
The bacterias who wants to digest the huge amount of greens and new food (soy and more cereals, lentils and so on) are absolutely overworked and the others are starting a revolution… Imagine this szene in your tummy it needs time to get rid of the no more needed flora and to establish the new needed gutflora.
Especially if you like to be a parttime vegan you will constantly ask your gut to do work which it’s obviously not prepared for… Some people say, that this is one of the reasons they’re quitting the vegan diet. I highly recommend to try it at least 3 better 6 month without exception.
And help your gut with pre and probiotics. Try Inulin, good and healthy foods, avoiding processed ingredients, if you can afford it, try to stick to whole and organic foods. It is worthy!
I’m vegan for over a decade now and I’m eating mostly raw mixed with cooked legumes, fermented foods and I can digest raw broccoli and kale with a huge portion of lentils and you will not hear one thing

Fruit in general has too much sugar. All fruit will cause sugar spikes none is good for you. You will always get bloating and veggies yes have to be cooked all the way through. Shakes are ok but every now and again not everyday. lemons and limes are alright. Avocado is healthy won’t cause bloating. Dairy causes bloating and inflammation. Herbs and spices fix up inflammation and bloating too.

I had a toupet fundoplication surgery so no longer have a fundus as that was used to reinforce my Les. Since then I seem to have endless gas. (Which was expected side effect.) My doctor presumes most of my gas is caused by intestinal gas from my stool as you mentioned as one culprit for gas. I’m trying to find the right fiber and balance to help me go without causing gas. I like how you mention it’s a balance of not too much or too little fiber. As I almost feel like the advice I hear is either increase fiber or a no or low fiber diet.

Cream of tartar contains potassium bicarbonate, which is extremely alkaline, to the point that it will render stomach acid too high a PH to function. I know this because i was supplementing with it, and i stopped digesting food.
It was so bad that i had to drink apple cider vinegar ( has a PH of approx 3.0 ) in order to start digesting food again, after days of wondering what was going on. I recommend updating or removing this recommendation.
Potassium bitartrate ( cream of tartar ) is used in the wine industry to increase PH because it is the most powerful substance to do it. Your stomach acid needs to be at 2-3 PH.

My family of 4 all have stomach issues. We tried eveything and nothing was working. I tried the so called buddha bowls as our main meal and after a week, all stomach issues for all family members went away. Bloating gone, no more constipation and so on. I just don’t know what to say or think. Everyone feels so much better because of this. Our buddha bowls are all vegetarian with chicken once a week. Our bowls are always a grain (Quinoa, Millet, Rice) with lots of veggies (Raw or roasted), a pulse (chickpea, Black beans, white beans) usually topped with an avocado and nuts and some kind of sauce or dressing. Is it safe to eat like this 7 days a week?

My bloating started a few years ago and its so bad, every single thing I eat, my stomach extended and my belly button sticks out, the gas is so embarrassing and I feel like its ruining my relationships because honestly who would want to be around that? But I’m so afraid to go to a dr for it because everything I read says the symptoms lead to some kind of chronic disease that has extreme measures to try to manage it and its scary. I don’t want to live on a very restrictive diet. I eat so balanced and healthy because it makes me honestly feel good except my guts are just on fire.

Whoah! Love your videos, so helpful and your energy is amazing. However as a nutritionist student advising folks not to eat dark greens is not a good idea:( Dark greens are the best source of calcium whereas animal dairy actI ally strips your bone calcium (long story so read the China study)! Yup, my mouth was agasp too when I found out! Reason for bloating is simply that your gut flora is not geared to digest the good stuff you need and get the best out of it, basically the bacteria in you gut at present is geared to processing bad stuff. Animal meat needs very, very high acidic levels (hence a lion, tiger or you puss cat can eat chuncks of it at a time…but, they have a very short digestive tract to get it out quickly too…unlike humans! All that meat is doing is putrifing and hence your poops stink like crazy ). To help de-gas, yes you are correct cut out the processed white stuff, including sugar, choccy, sweeties/candy and animal produce, including fish completely. Water fast if you can for as long as you can. Add lemon slices to water or apple cider water to your diet this increases the stomach acid. Juice the dark greens for a few weeks, then blend them for a few weeks to help your tum bud up the right bacteria to process the cellulose. If you are on medication though, as always speak to your Doctor first.

Reading this comment section scares me. Please people, don’t take things people say on youtube as absolute truth ♀️. I eat raw veggies everyday now, and I have not only lost weight, but my belly is much slimmer. Raw fruits and veggies are perfectly healthy, very hydrating and full of vitamins, minerals and fiber that your body needs. The fiber will keep your belly skinny. The goal is to eat a variety, and dark leafy greens, as they will build up your gut flora.
You can always option to lightly steam veggies, but really only potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans and Brussels sprouts are the ones I would say to do if you are just starting to eat veggies again, and your body isn’t used to them.
If you are going to cut anything out of your diet, it should be dairy and all animal products, they are the ones that cause cancer, high blood pressure, clog your arteries and mess up your stomach in the first place.

I am at fifty and spent forever in gyms and have known tons of super muscular gym nuts. Sad to say that at my age I’ve seen most of them dead from steroids, which they EMPHATICALLY denied ever using, kidneys shut down from consuming way too much protein, and so many other health issues it’s crazy. My sister is facing surgery for a hernia that has caused her so much pain, sleepless nights, extreme acid reflux from her stomach actually pushing up into her esophagus. She let her muscle head gym nut husband push her to lift more weights and is now paying the price for it. My point being, stop looking at people that look EXTREMELY fit, because the key is MODERATION, and not regretting your decisions when you get older. Most of the time, the men I’ve known like this, their bodies are falling apart in their forties.

I wouldn’t ditch veggies especially not raw. I think this is just what people want to hear. The thing is to ask yourself why is my body behaving this way? Raw veggies are some of the best micro phytonutrient payoff you can get. The body’s digestion is not strong if you cannot eat broccoli so need to fix that, however you go about doing it.

I like that you explained the science behind your recommendations. I’m not an expert, but I do know this and have heard this recommended by many reputable sources. Also, I experience the same affects of eating veggies. Even cooked ones. So I’m eliminating them from my diet (again). I love broccoli and cauliflower so it’s gonna be hard for me.
My bloating/extra weight was healed with a plant based diet, so I don’t quite understand how people say it causes bloating unless you’re eating a super high-fiber starvation diet.
I’m vegan and I get bloating if I eat foods that trigger my IBS or if I’m stressed, otherwise I’m fine.

Overeating is a thing, also as a vegan. My digestion gets used to plant based in 1-2 weeks but still having a big load of fiber, protein and starches, carbs isn’t easy to digest. You feel it laying in bed. Also having a mid to big load of alcohol at Friday’s or Saturdays have huge influence on digestion. It’s like throwing your gut microbiome back for weeks. Pretty sad, bad digestion makes me depressed. Eat normal portions, stop alcohol, you will be fine sooner or later.

Secondly I have a requestI turned vegan 3 years ago after watching forks over knives and reading a bunch of vegan doctor booksCampbell, greger, esselstein etc. There are a lot out there. I had such a huge phobia of animal foods after that. 2 years into it I found that I have vit d and iron deficient anemia. Which led me to do some research and start questioning my diet. I have since tried to pick up some meat and eggs but I keep going back to those books and documentaries, they really put the fear in me that everytime I eat eggs or fish or chicken I am scared that I will get cancer or I am absorbing all the mercury etc. I don’t know what to believe, I am very confused and I don’t know who to ask. I am really struggling.
So could you share your thoughts on how to make sense of all the vegan literature out there? And what could be some of the pitfalls and health concerns and how to deal with it?

Hi! I just bought those Sambazon immunity tropical packets. So excited to try it out! When you added your papaya and pineapple, I saw some white flakes toward the bottom. Are those coconut shreds?
Also: Don’t eat too fast. If you do that you typically ingest more air and you don’t chew properly. Proper chewing helped me a ton. Why is no one ever talking about it? We are often distracted and/or in a hurry when eating so I’m pretty sure more people don’t chew enough:p
I’m very sensitive to fodmaps. Watermelon is literally the worst. I actually have a picture when my stomach grew so much that i legit looked 7 months pregnant. Had to take a picture because even i couldn’t believe it.
Totally agree about carbonated drinks too but for me wheat and pulses are the WORST

Bothersome title. There’s no such thing as “the” vegan diet. There are many ways to eat a diet if you are vegan the commonalites being the exclusion of animal products and the inclusion of a b12 supplement. Everything else varies person to person. Some people may bloat eating certain foods (or in certain amounts) and others may not.
the carnivore guys aren’t reporting any bloating or constipation issues (apart from the transition first couple of weeks sometimes). this is related to the toxins and chemicals in plants. need to do elimination diet I guess.
I came from an eating dissorder so that’s why I was bloated but now I’m fine since my bodies used to food

I was hopeful that this video would have a simply implemented protocol, but as it went, I felt like I was back to needing test tubes, a Bunson burner, and phenolphthalein to prepare my foods. It shouldn’t be this difficult to eat.

Wow! I’ve just learned something! So, I have been VERY skeptical of registered dieticians for a long time. (And you are like a breath of fresh air, btw.) Reason? I’ve had IBS since my late teens. My mom dragged me to every doctor under the sun until I basically told her that the only way she’s getting me into another doctor’s office is if she knocks me out and carries me there. And one of the reasons I didn’t want to go or to even attempt treatment was because doctor after doctor and dietician after dietician has told me (1) that FODMAPS foods would be off my menu FOREVER, (2) that I should stop eating gluten FOREVER even though multiple tests including a biopsy showed that I have no gluten sensitivity, and (3) that I should cut out dairy FOREVER even though I am not and have never been lactose intolerant. My 19-year-old self took a look at this list and was like “so, y’all want me to flirt with malnutrition till the day I die? I’m out!” It took me years to get my symptoms under control. One of the biggest culprits were xantham gum, guara gum, and their ilk (ya’ know, the stuff that gluten free pastas are full of). I look like I’m in late stages of pregnancy every time I eat them. So, I read my labels, because that kind of bloat and that kind of pain… it’s worth my time and effort to avoid that. Another culprit was my water intake. I now double my water when I increase my fiber intake: i.e. if last week I had sandwiches for lunch and this week it’s Buddha bowls, better refill my water bottle 2 more times. And finally I had to accept some things as reality: (1) periods, even the fake ones on birth control will constupate me worse than a bag of chips with an ice cream chaser, (2) runners diarrhea will happen, and (3) it’s okay that my tummy does not stay sunken in throughout the day-that’s just life and I’m better off doing abs workouts to tighten my core than cutting out asparagus. ♀️

yes! why do more people not get the raw veggie thing? Its ok for some people. But for me I have been told sooo many times by chinese acupuncture practitioners NOT to eat raw. ANd skins are so hard to digest. So I cook it all. Soups are QUEEN

I love a vegan diet (mainly allergy related so of course I lost bloating) I lost a clothes size just from loosing the bloat which was so painful but I thought it was normal as a child and teen.

As someone who’s been vegan for about 15 years, I recommend doing micro amounts of foods like beans and legumes at first then gradually adding more, the suggestion Abbey made about making a few changes at time is also great. I find how you are or aren’t affected by switching to a vegan or plant based diet may also depend on what your diet was like before the switch, were you coming from a very processed diet or a higher fibre more diverse diet, each will take a different amount of time to adapt and adjust.

Bloating explains why I feel fat. I’m not fat, I’m how much I’m supposed to weight according to my height, but when I looked at my belly it looks big and like if it had a lot of air.
A few months ago, I decreased the amount of wheat and legumes and increased the fiber I eat and it has definitely improved my bloating. When I get bloated now, I get surprised. Before, it used to be a daily thing.

Could you do more on the brain-gut connection, please? I experience diarrhoea, gas, and sometimes pain from migraine attacks. I’ve read about how the gut slows down during an attack, leading to excess fermentation.
I think there’s also a big myth that being vegan means that you need to eat way more volume in order to meet the RDA for nutrients. I do love a nice big salad once in a while, but the plating method applies equally to eating vegan as it does any other way. I eat just a normal-sized plate of food like anyone else with grains, greens/veg, and protein + fat and I get everything I need in that amount.
Another tip for people with a bean heavy diet: soaking the beans to sprouting point(usually 24-36hrs, depending on the bean) is a win-win-win situation. It cuts down the cooking time, increases nutrition, and makes the beans so much easier to digest(at least for me). Beans also freeze super well, so don’t feel like you need to eat 2kg of cooked beans in a short time out of fear of them going bad. Use enough for the dish you have planned, and then freeze the rest in portions sizes appropriate for your household’s meal size needs.

I have major problems with bloating, and it’s caused by certain kinds of carbs. Wheat is actually pretty bad, especially whole wheat, but I’ve started eating this sprouted and fermented bread, and it’s amazing how this kind of processing completely nullifies the effect of wheat on my digestion. Just thought I’d comment in case others benefit from my experience…

Hi Abby. I recently discovered your channel and the information you have provided has been highly beneficial to me. I struggled with an ED for many years of my life. I have been in recovery for about for a few years. My triggers are still very much present. Although I don’t act on them. I have really been struggling due to the fact I am so easily triggered. I purged my IG completely and go on FB occasionally only to retrieve specific messages As Im sure you know of the health risks that come along with having an ED. Especially at a young age. I developed pre existing medical complications I may not have had otherwise such as increased anxiety and depression, epilepsy, osteoporosis, major digestive issues. During that time I also suffered two cardiac arrest and countless emergency situations due to the deficiencies in my diet. At one point I had to be in a wheelchair being at such high risk for heart failure and too weak to stand. I had to get picked up to get into my wheelchair The physical complications have improved significantly and are continuing to improve after a long battle with weight restoration as a result of refeeding syndrome. I have been tapering off of my medication for just over a year. I’m now just trying to adapt to living again. Anyways, that’s just a small portion of my story. I really do plan to share it when the time is appropriate in my recovery journey. I want to inform people of what an ED really looks like from my experience. I want to show the real version rather than this glamourized notion of narcism people associate with eating disorders. That in which can often be more harmful and triggering. I am sending this message to thank you for what you do. There is also another reason. I need to speak up about something to someone on YouTube that has fronts ethics. There is a girl with a platform of about 2.5 million subs. She has been on YouTube for several years. She is known for her Try on hauls and intentionally exposing as much of her skeletal ever deteriorating body. She was practically in the state I was in when I was in a hospital with IVs and doctors, etc. She Denied ED claims for years. I believe she is 26 or 27. She still lives with her parents and they were taking no action. Her mom was actually filming her or in her videos many times. It came to friends having to go to the extent of tricking her and getting her into an intervention setting. She then was taken against her will. Now a year later she is in the same place, now with no friends making videos in her pink bedroom playing dress up and talking in the pitch of an eight year old about Disney and Pokemon. This concerns me. When she had returned to YouTube he wore clothes that were a little bit baggier than usual. I could tell she was still extremely thin, but her faced looked a lot healthier. Her comments were full of encouragement and positivity. Telling someone in that state of recovery that they look healthy in their mind the person saying they are fatter. It was wayyyy too soon to her returning to YouTube. Even though it is clear she is regressing people are sending her comments saying how she strong she is and telling her she is doing so well. She did an collab with Katie Morton which was completely unethical. f if don’t know who Katie is there is a video on her channel and Eugeni Then there are the comments calling out her weight loss. Eating Disorders don’t go away over night, which is something most people don’t know. Her over exaggerating positivity is sending people the wrong message and puts the ED community to shame. She knows exactly the message she is sending and who her audience is. YouTube is spoon-feeding her content. I unsubscribed and her videos are somehow being promoted to me. It has had a massively negative impact on me even at this point in my recovery. I can only imagine what it’s doing to people stuck in their disorder and young girls accross the globe! There was a petition to have her deplatformed for her to return after taking the time to sort out her health. The sister of a young girl who was a fan of Eugenia. From the time she started watching Eugenia she developed an ED and as a result passed away. There were many others who spoke up but YouTube never stepped in. There are so many videos made about her. All her old videos are still up. If you see a couple of videos you will see what I am saying. Is there anything that can be done? Could you make a video in relevance to this. Even if you don’t name her….
Going to a vegan diet actually improved my digestive issues immensely. I rarely have any pain or diarrhoea anymore, but the constant bloat will not budge. I went to see a doctor about it and they wanted to do all sorts of expensive diagnostic tests such as a Sibo breath test, ultrasounds, stool tests etc but I cannot afford it so……
I’ve suffered from severe bloating for many years, I started antidepressants 3 weeks ago and have noticed that my bloating has improved a bit recently. Maybe it’s not related but it would be a welcome side effect if it is

I really struggled with severe bloating when I went vegan… I was miserable. I went to a doctor and started an elimination diet. Found out I struggle digesting mushrooms (which I was casually mixing in my meals 1-2 times a day) anywhoo all better now that I just avoid them.
What are your thoughts on digestive enzyme supplements? I feel they make a massive difference to any ‘bloating’ or digestive discomfort I’ve experienced. Are they safe? Are they necessary?
I appreciate you tackling this, because I have a lot of belly/visceral fat I’m working on losing for my health, but some of these videos have gotten to me a little and had me wondering if there might be a food intolerance or something going on. But I think honestly it’s just salt/water/weight (in the shape of a baby bump because mom here hi).
I switched my diet to probably 80-90% plant based and was extremely bloated the first few months. I felt like I was gaining weight and feeling heavy all the time, and it almost made me quit. I stuck it out and now feeling back to normal and better! I do not get extreme bloating like that anymore at the end of the day, and I am not bloated in the morning. Our bodies need time to adapt!
I think you give very generic one size fits all info. Also just demonizing those who find benefit with the lowering of certain macronutrients. This whole “balance” thing, doesn’t work for everyone.
I disagree with your statement about stevia. Stevia is one of the healthiest sweeteners you can have. I lost 40 lbs over a year ago. I started keto and cut out sugars. There are some artificial sweeteners that will bloat you but stevia is not one of them.
Yes, I only drink almond milk, and have little amounts of cheese and yoghurt, never been a artificial sugar person, don’t touch soft drinks or packed juices, don’t over eat sugar in general. I eat lots of cooked veg, some fruits. Only drink warm water. Peppermint tea before bed. I bloat at times still but usually keep it under control these days. Depends on what your hormones are doing at the time too. Mine are usually why I bloat. But we are all different.
I want to love those Sambazon packets, but I seriously don’t get them. I have a nutribullet and a regular blender, but neither one can blend them unless they’re thoroughly thawed (which kind of defeats the purpose). How do you do it without a $500 blender?
