Food Coma is also known as postprandial somnolence and is described as the fatigued and drowsy feeling after eating a substantial meal. Here are the causes of this condition and ways to prevent this. Here are the causes of this condition and ways to prevent this.Food coma is also known as carb coma and scientifically termed as Postprandial somnolence. Actually a state of food coma is known through its two components; one component being linked to the activation of parasympathetic nervous system in response to mass in the gastrointestinal tract that generates the symptom of a low energy and another component being a certain state of sleepiness which is believed to be caused due to the neurochemical and hormonal changes occurring related.
A food coma is a real physiological reaction to overeating. Foods high in protein and salt, eaten in large quantities, make you the sleepiest. Feeding time influences the degree of food coma experienced. If food comas are a problem for you, try eating.Postprandial somnolence (colloquially known as the itis, food coma, after dinner dip, or postprandial sleep) is a normal state of drowsiness or lassitude following a meal.
Postprandial somnolence has two components: a general state of low energy related to activation of the parasympathetic nervous system in response to mass in the gastrointestinal tract, and a specific state of sleepiness. While there are numerous theories surrounding this behavior, such as decreased blood flow to the brain, neurohormona.Other causes of the food coma after meals: Lack of nickel, a mineral that protects the liver, helps store glycogen and is useful in enhancing the properties of insulin in lowering the glucose level. Cobalt deficiency, a mineral that helps produce red blood cells, with important anti-anemic effect.
Treatment for a coma depends on the cause. People close to the comatose patient should give doctors as much information as possible to help the doctors determine the cause of coma.Treatment will depend on the underlying cause of the coma, for example, kidney failure, liver disease, diabetes, poisoning, and so on. If there is brain swelling, surgery may be needed to relieve. Here’s Why Eating Too Much Can Give You a ‘Food Coma’ This leaves less blood for the rest of the body and can cause some people to feel a bit ‘light-headed’ or tired.
Still, the body is a lot more sophisticated than that; it doesn’t respond to food volume alone. What.Although any overeating can cause a food coma, carbohydrates in particular are able to contribute to the effect more than other foods.
Things like potatoes, rice dishes, pasta, and breads should be kept to a minimum as a preventative measure. These plummets always cause some degree of fatigue. Some popular foods with a high glycemic index include white bread, pasta, rice and baked goods.
Tryptophan – The uptake of the amino acid tryptophan by the brain can readily lead to fatigue. In the brain, tryptophan is converted to serotonin and melatonin.Taking your full lunch break is a great way to decompress and prepare for the work in the afternoon (see our blog on how to do the business lunch healthfully), but there is one outcome every productive worker wants to avoid: the food coma. The “Food Coma” which is so ubiquitous it was added to the Oxford Dictionaries Online in 2014, is that feeling of sleepiness that overtakes people after a big.
Why Do I Go Into a Food Coma After I Eat? There are a few factors that can contribute to the drowsiness you feel after eating: your digestion cycle, diet, sleeping habits, physical activity, and other health conditions. 1 For example, the human body’s digestive cycle can trigger several responses, including increased levels of serotonin and melatonin, which can cause drowsiness.Food Coma Causes and Cures November 23rd, 2015. by Annalise Mantz.

Thanks Dr. Berry for this video, now I know that I was suffering from Carb Coma. I had problems with falling asleep after eating for about two years before I got on Keto back in January. One at least two occasions I fell asleep behind the wheel of a car and did not wake up until I was nearly off the road. Thank God I didn’t hit someone or drive into another car! All that went away after the first week or so of Keto. Thank you for your informative videos, you are one of the sanest voices out in the Keto-community.
Huh I’d never heard of this ‘blood rushing to your stomach’ thing before. I always thought it was because breaking down the food requires energy but never really thought about it. good to know:)
I just had a carnivore meal and I’m not at all sleepy. (No fat cheetahs right?)
Sometimes when i eat a lot i start laughing uncontrollably
Very educative mic, nice one. I just realised the coconut oil i ate gave me a food coma and i also realised coconut oil is really high in saturated fat. The remaining oil went into a bag!:-)
Boiled potatoes give me food coma. No fat there. Potatoes baked with olive oil are less coma inducing, dont know why.
I hate that feeling after you eat a lot of food you feel sluggish
Thank you Dr. Berry for your great videos! From following you I have not only learned a great deal about Keto Lifestyle, I’ve also been inspired to get serious about developing my YouTube channel. I love your style and study you as a YouTube teacher:)
I just ate a double quarter pounder with cheese i was shifting in n out of conscious lol it was greasy
I am SOOO GREATFUL I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL-!!!! I’ve been watching video after video… RELEARNING EVERYTHING I WAS EVER TOLD-!! I just listen and smh.. knowing how much I Messed myself up.. I’m going to try Keto.. I bet you almost Every ailment I have will dissapear as will the weight from “trying” all these years with.. skim milk.. fat free.. and Carbs-!!!! Can you say.. ENLIGHTENED-!! Thank you.
Man i knew all this before i clicked WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Question? I am not eating a lot of carbs. And for a month my eyes want to shut, I am sleepy, it is the oddest thing to be in a state of sleepiness, I am trying to watch what I eat. I try to eat good carbs in greens. Even when I do not eat, I have been feeling sleepy. However the peanut butter has some sugar.
this is right. i hate it when people speak of turkey like its a sleeping pill and will make you pass out because they have no idea what they are talking about.
fatty meals give me energy and keep me going, as long as they don’t have too much cholesterol or sugar
I wish you lived in Kentucky. Your videos have been so amazing. Unlike others, I’ve only lost five pounds in 4 weeks but I was low carb before trying keto. I’ll take it at 57, I am not looking forward to seeing my cardiologist next Thursday. I don’t think he is going to agree with all this fat:(
Been there, done that. More times than I can recall. I’m definitely going to try eating carnivore and see what happens.
why am i watching this i haven’t had a food com even once in my life lol
Dr. Berry when is the best time of day to test blood ketones?
Wow! Now I’m confused. I have been eating zero carbs. After lunch chicken thighs grilled, I fell asleep. After dinner a Ribeye I fell asleep again and just woke up wondering if it was a food coma. My B/S Before dinner was 120. After it was 122. Lunch was 109 before and 109 after lunch, no insulin shots for two days.
My A1c went from 8.2 to 6.4 last reading. I am trying to get off of insulin as it is too expensive for a senior on SSI. I feel good until I ingest my meal and then I feel extremely tired. I wake up feeling better. I’m at the point I can kick meal insulin, but still taking basil insulin.
Has anyone else kicked the insulin. I hope I’m doing this right. Oh, and I don’t eat large amounts of meat and fat. Only a normal serving. I’ve lost 30 lbs so far but at a stand still. So can anyone help me understand if I’m going in the right direction. Send me some thoughts.uh
Thank you for listening..
I have started to keep a journal that hopefully will tell me which foods are most likely the culprit and just what potion size triggers the unscheduled naps. It really seems go the way of what is happening to the individual and paying attention and keeping track. BTW, I have been on insulin for several years and just started the post prandial episodes earlier this year.
I ate a whole package of sugar-free bacon and experienced food coma. Zero carbs sooooooo… Insulin spike from the protein?
This was a surprisingly informative video. I really liked how she went into the pathway/s that induce a ‘food coma’, very interesting stuff!!
Yes, I love the idea of eating until I get sleepy or I outgrow my clothes.
I’ve never had this since going vegan, thank goodness. I used to get tired after lunch but now I feel more energized because I have a salad, soup, beans and rice, etc.
would coconut sugar be treated the same way? Varies Channel Consume lots of coconut sugar like freelee,DurianRider,Powsimion,JoeyCarbstrong Etc. And It seems to help their performance.
Didn’t know this. I am diabetic now but I remember for years I would have food coma…. Finally now I watch my carbs and have more energy accordingly. Wish I had known about this train whistle earlier!
When you get these test results what am looking for? What is good range for these labs? I go to my doctor first week in August.
Highly informative video about this topic I have ever seen!!! Kudos subscribed
Hi Dr Berry, I have type 2 Diabetes, which through following a very low carb diet, is now in remission. Since following this diet my food and drink choices have changed completely. I no longer enjoy drinking coffee but black tea, the only carbs I eat are those I count in veggies and I aim to keep
my carb count around 20 or at the most 50.. I am never hungry and eat only one meal a day. However, I still suffer from extreme fatigue after eating. I am a lady of a ‘certain age’ and have read this can be a factor of getting older. For example, yesterday in the early evening I ate, homemade chilli burgers and chestnut mushrooms. My starter was avocado with full fat mayo. Two hours later I awoke with a start! My GP monitors regularly monitors my blood.
On the positive side, my bp is better than normal for my age and those horrible hypo attacks are a thing of the past. Help?
So right. Always when I ate something fatty I started feeling very tired for few days.
Dont high fat diets like keto make insulin resistance worse? So that when you do eat carbs the problem has compounded? Wouldnt it be better to eat more vegetables, lean meats and a serving of low glycemic load carbs like black beans, an apple or berries?
Is it just me or is the lighting completely off making her skin seem very sickly…?
You are right.I stopped at Wendy’s to get a bunless double burger with chesses only AND I was good.How.long will it take to not have coma like theses?
But why I feel this coma even after eating a grilled chicken or any source of protein
Most of my meals are protein with medium amount of vegetables
And also I drink too much water by this I mean too much around 5 liter per a day but I feel dizzy and thirsty and big feeling to sleep
OH CRAP!! I got sleepy as hell today after a salad with grilled chicken. Seriously?? Dang.
Weird, I was thinking that since going vegan, in addition to losing weight, feeling better and more positive, I don’t get the food coma at all anymore. I remember eating a large breakfast one time that was full of bacon and other fatty stuff and feeling horrible and tired all day. This explains it.
As Vegan, I eat so much and food never puts me to sleep. Which is great, cause I am awake and get to eat even more deliciousness!
i actually get really sleepy if i skip breakfast then for lunch eat a bunch of fruit
When I have a problem with my orexin level, I just pop a Viagra.
I’ve been a WFPB vegan for a little over a month. Starch based. For month two, I decided to get rid of coffee. It’s been almost a week, and I feel exhausted. Surprisingly, giving up coffee was easy. Minor headaches for a day, and that’s all. But I’ve been dragging for days. It feels like a 24/7 food coma.
WHAT’S MORE WORSE? Waking up to a penis drawn on your face or finding out it was traced?
I agree about the carb thing. However, I have had “food coma” happen to me…..even eating strictly Keto and extremely low carbs. I think it can also occur from eating “too much” at any given meal. I noticed I get this when I over eat, eating too fast at one meal. Especially when I come off a 36 hr fast, for instance. (I have been at my preferred weight for months….fantastic “BG numbers” for at least 7 months).
ouh… so fast. talking. mby in future some animations can help to catch up with those fast terms. small advice.. amazing content still
0:01 – 0:07 .
Also a video on why people go completely nuts on Black Friday
Very useful as I couldn’t find an explanation anywhere else as to why I felt pole axed after any meal carbs or no carbs. Thanks and will look into this further.
really interesting seems like carbs + fat or protein + fat seems to elicit a higher insulin response than you’d expect?
I do this almost after every meal lately. I have been Type 2 since 2014
I honestly think that many people are addicted to those spikes in cholesterol for me when eating meat since I went on and off it during my pregnancies it was almost like the sluggish feeling of sludge blood tricked my body to feeling satiated. It’s almost like a high… Kinda explaining the depths of meat addictions.
Loving your channel! It offers more information for the people who don’t want to vegan simply because they don’t give a shit about the animals or planet. Perhaps their health will catch their attention!
I generally don’t have them anymore, but ate 2 eggs cooked in bacon grease with 1 T of butter on top, to break my fast and within 5-10 minutes there it was. I am keeping a journal now, thinking it could be a sensitivity to eggs. I am very low carb, so I know it wasn’t carbs now, before it was.
Iam on a ketogenic Diet & It causes food coma especially after diary products like butter & yogurt Anyone knows the reason?
Dr. Berry I hate to tell you but I also get that food coma or insulin coma whatever after eating something healthy like a couple of hard boiled eggs and a cheese stick for lunch. And I hate them because when I fall asleep I go to sleep so deep that when I wake up I wake up in my dream but I’m still sleeping and I’ll do that four five times before I can actually pull myself out it’s kind of scary actually.
Excellent video. New vegan here! I did it step by step….first pescatarian, then vegetarian, now vegan!
Already noticed this in switching to veganism: large vegan meal, no loss of mental clarity and energy.
Ummm I really dont get the logic earlier people used to suffer from starvation and now we millenials are suffering from food coma
What about if you get tired after a carnivore meal of just beef?
Thank you so much for the great advice…I sit at a desk most of the day, so I could relate to that part… I am going to try walking more after eating, also I have found that the body ecology diet works pretty good for digestion you should check it out sometime if you haven’t already!
Wow this is exactly whats going on but why when i tell people about this they rejected it, its like they dont want to believe it…..
just curious… you attributed the quote “atherogenic diets rich in saturated fats and cholesterol….”The Postprandial Microvascular Dysfunction article… I read the article and didn’t see that statement. different paper perhaps?
i didn’t know they have a a1c machine that you can buy, to test with, i saw one at wallgreens today.
I was taught that myth in a first aid course. A bit annoying that they don’t check their facts!
Holy crap. This was eye opening for me, this happens to me all the time and I never thought about that. I’ve been doing keto now for almost 2 weeks. I’m only 24 and I don’t want to be diabetic. Yikes.
+DNews I thought it might be appropriate to ask the Q here because you’re talking about getting sleepy after an activity. Some people get sleepy midafternoon, say around 2-3, are there any ways to fight sleepiness at this time? Why do we get sleepy around this time of the day?
No food coma, since I am vegan. And now I know the science behind it as well! Thanks Mic, you are great!!
Hey I have a quick question.
I have found out when I eat the following meal I get into food coma:
150 grams of red lentils
250 grams of sweet potatoes
200 grams of greens beans
So my conclusion would be that the food coma is not coming from the large amount of food but from the large amount of protein. Am I right?
Anyway I am trying to gain weight, and I am that type of person that needs to eat a whole lot of food.
So my question is this: Is food coma bad for the body?
If not I would just eat small meals throughout the day and then in the evening eat a lot of food, which makes me go into food coma which does not matter since I would be sleeping anyway. What do you think about that approach?
Thanks!
Today I was surprised… I eat a whole food vegan diet and today I decided to add some mayo to my meal. It was red lentils in tomato sauce mashed potatos and olives and some rice. So I’m not a big fat or oil eater and from the olives and mayo I felt sooooo tired. Wich I doesn’t experimented for weeks. After my non oily non fatty meals I feel sooo high that I can fly. Thank you Mic. You are an awesome man❤❤❤
I suspect that hidden food sensitivities spike my sugar and would thus cause insulin resistance. I started keto. In the past, through provocative neutralization (P & N) testing I found out chicken was causing me great brain fog and sleepiness. I still would eat it from time to time, rotisserie chicken Whole Foods or Sprouts was so easy to get. Had that with spinach, coconut oil, and eggs for breakfast. Doctor tested my blood sugar afterward it was 230, later that afternoon my blood sugar was 125, not on meds. This is extremely odd, never have blood sugar over say 140 even after eating, usually not over 125, many times around 95 to 110 (fasting), yet here was a 230 after eating a meal of eggs, chicken, salad, coconut oil. I generally do not like eggs. I have type O positive blood, according to Eat Right For Your Blood Type, type O blood people are not suppose to eat coconut in any form. So I ended up wondering if the coconut oil could be causing this sugar spike or the chicken. Did not feel especially sleepy after that meal. I shy away from chicken more now though. My A1C on blood tests had showed I was prediabetic. I could not figure this out as my blood sugars seemed pretty low. Then I was this spike after a keto meal and it made me wonder.
That was worth watching just to watch the meercat at the end. Positively hilarious. Excellent information too of course
I got really tired after every meal when i first switched to a whole food vegan diet, it’s not as bad now that I’m getting used to all the carbs but I’m still curious why my body did that. Thanks for the video!!:)
doc i have a question
is the food come more likely to happen during daytime?
coz im having the symptoms when i eat rice(white not brown) for breakfast
but the symptoms are not pronounced when i eat rice at night(i usually dont)
i had rice for breakfast for like 13 years of my life, everyday
So what exactly happens when we go to sleep when we have carb-coma?
I don’t get it all the time. I get them rarely. I just made a good vegan pasta
I get a MAJOR food coma after eating steak ONLY! I’ve been carnivore for over two months ideas??
There’s a common perception in our family that eating a lot and sleeping after is not good for your body. For one, it was believed that it causes nightmares. For Asian’s there is this phenomenon called “bangugot” or simply nightmares that will eventually let the victim fall asleep forever. That is why we are always told to allow the food to digest in your body for a couple of hours before sleeping.
Then there’s the feeling of “hang-over” where your body is tired despite sleeping for hours. Lastly, the notion of eating and sleeping will increase the chance of your body storing the energy to your body in form of fats.
Food coma’s are what originally motivated me to try the vegan diet. And I didn’t know the blood rushing to the stomach explanation was false until now!
Im worried about all the negative press regarding veganism? Especially from ex-vegans and fruitarians.
Sorry, at 1:00 I think you got the viscosity thing mixed up.. cheers.
I had food coma I found out I was insulin resistant and was almost a type 2 diabetic I have been keto since April 2 2018. I don’t do that anymore
Josh Clark is my favorite narrator. He’s so monotone it’s great.
I have risen from a food coma.. I had a bacon cheeseburger, fries, and strawberry milk shake now I wanna go to the gym
I looked this up because to break a 15 hour fast, had 1 serving of low carb Orzo from The great Low Carb Bread Co. I also had protein and fat. No sugars or sweet sauces… just herbs, seasoning, butter and grated parmesan. By the labels, I should only have eaten 7 net carbs. I experienced this coma shortly after. I have been IF and eating 20 25 net carbs daily since 1/17. I am concerned that this speaks to something wrong with me or that product…or both. Please advise.
i food coma myself to sleep every single night. its not healthy.
This video had so much promise but went scientific so quick. SorryNO, I’m sleeping.
Spending my time watching Dnews than studying for final exams…. WORTH IT.
When I eat beans and rice I feel energized. When I eat a cheese burger I want to sleep. So I went low meat and feel so much better.
I have it after even a small meal, I cannot afford keto diet, cinnamon lowers blood sugar, does it help lowering food coma?
What to do if I have a food coma wihtout eating carbs? too much fat or too much protein instead? Just had eggs and butter and a carrot.
Refined carbs also cause sludge blood. Whole foods vegan all the way.
I found out why eating so much is required for hibernating animals to go into hibernation thanks to this vid about food comas. Hibernation is basically an extended food coma.
Food coma for me: fell asleep in a drive thru once. Cops, ambulance and a fire truck showed up. ♀️
i haven’t experienced a food coma in forever… great video! xo
Nice, thanks. I did believe the blood rushing to the stomach myth… as You Know Who says, Until Now! Informatiive video and entertaining ending. The ‘gross’ food and the, meercat, is it? .
I watch thia video after 2 hours of meal. I desperately fall asleep while watching….zzZ
Thank you so much for posting this. I love your videos and have been watching them avidly since starting keto about 5 weeks ago. However, I do have a question. I had sudden sleepiness today after my 2 pm breakfast of bacon and eggs and BPC-no carbs at all, not one! The last meal before that was 2 pm yesterday, and I had plenty of sleep last night. The same thing happened once before since starting keto, again, after a late breakfast. My biggest problem on keto has been eating enough calories every day. Most days, I’m just not hungry for supper even though I may have eaten only 700 or 800 calories so far that day. Is there something wrong with me? I’m 5’4″ at 168 (have dropped 20#), age 65. I’m starting to worry!
Hi people, I’m a new vegan. 1 month strong. How about avocado fats?
I thought this video was going to be about diabetics passing out from not eating enough food.
Thank you for you and Neisha’s caring and wise knowledge you so freely share with us!
what you say about insulin response is interesting. Im an exception though as i am type 1 diabetic so my insulin responses are what i make them via injection lol.
I just woke up from a food coma and I can not move much. happy day after thanksgiving.
maybe it’s nature’s way of getting you to stop overloading with even more sugars/starches that our bodies were never intended to consume in such massive quantity.
Yoooo I watched this while on food coma and fell asleep on food coma
Why does my camera pick up a purple light when I point the remote at it? When i press buttons and point the remote at the camera (my smartphone) purple flashes appear by my natural eye can’t see it. What’s going on?
Dear Mic,
What about the nervous system, the parasympathetic and sympathetic. I thought this might be an additional help to understand, what’s going on in the food coma.
The two nervous systems PS and S work as antagonists. The PS gets activated in calm situations, e.g. when your stomach and intestines digest food. This also explains why you are getting tired. It’s just natural?!?!?! What do you think? Have you heard of it?
WFPB, no oil, still get drowsy af after a meal, especially after lunch.
dude you’re amazing.. just recently went vegan from being a vegetarian and this is very reassuring!. thank you:D
I never heard of this expression before but as soon as I saw “FOOD COMA” I knew what it was!
I get that without eating. lucky me. But another great, informative video
I have been eating a carnivore diet for a couple weeks and today I developed a food coma after eating 8 oz chicken with skin, lamb sweetbread, lamb heart, beef liver and 8 oz of ground beef with butter. If you were me would you switch back to keto?
Thank you for your videos, I’ve got a question about cholesterol mine is currently at 260 which is high they wanted at 200 I have been doing keto since February 1st and have lost 27 lb which is amazing seeing how I am disabled with multiple sclerosis and unable to do a lot of exercise. I need to know what I can do to help get my cholesterol down naturally
Jist had a food coma. I slept for like 2-3 hrs. Arrgghh, that’s why I hate eating a lot of pizza
I get severe food comas which got worse with keto. I think my cortisol is dropping 2 hrs after my first meal which is mostly lunch, I just found out my T3 RT3 ratio is 4.7 so tht could be the problem. Interestingly the only way I can avoid it is fasting past 5pm.Sometims my adrenoline will kick in and I can avoid it but hert rate goes up.
Yes, carb coma! Started keto a month ago and realized that this never happened anymore, which really clued me in on the insulin resistance. Trying to convince my husband to lower his carbs at least! He eats a giant fast food combo meal and knocks out every time.
Had just eaten a large dinner and started watching this video. Large salad with macadamias and pecans chaser. Got so sleepy had to take a nap. Need to address this! Thank you doctor Berry.
I cant choose what I eat
My asian parents kept shoving me huge ammount of rice and meat
I hate eating food, it’s just felt like a necessity
I’ve had meat comas and not turkey. Doesn’t always happen, but it has.
You are looking SO much better. Glad you got some rest. Haven’t had a food coma since I started Keto. Thank you.
Hi Dr. is there’s something else (cheap) to eat to substitute Ribeye . Thank you.
This happens to me even when I eat NO carbs because I ate high carb for so many years, that my fasting insulin levels are chronically high. So when I eat anything now, my insulin levels are already elevated and since there is no sugar for it to act upon, my blood sugar goes too low and I fall into a food coma and don’t even realize I fell asleep until I suddenly wake up. How do I fix that?
it is purely psychological. People from the youngest age hear their parents saying, ” man i am stuffed, and sleepy. ” who heard their parents say, ” Man, I am stuffed, and sleepy. ” Who heard their parents say, ” Man, I am stuffed, and sleepy. It is a circle of dumb. Now pay me what these researchers are getting paid please, mystery solved, dumbness averted.
I’m 65 yrs old, but when I was in my 20’s after I would eat a sandwich for lunch I felt like taking a nap, I fought so hard to keep awake. I blamed it on the bread, because when I didn’t eat a sandwich for lunch I was never tired. So from then on I quit eating bread for lunch. In my 20’s I was consider underweight at 135 lbs. So glad I doing the keto woe now.
We really appreciate your videos Dr. Berry! So much of this Keto journey is re-learning the nutrition we were taught growing up because it’s totally backwards. Would it be fair to say that a high blood glucose would correlate to that feeling of food coma?
Unrelated, but can we talk about how good Mic’s hair looks in this video?
Ummm the part of the country in TN I’m from doc we called/ call that
“ foundering”.. lol
Same thing as cows do! Lol
It reminds me of my Christmas dinner, mayor food coma, but It was a good cause, very original and helpful topic now I know what to do, cheers.
Thank you for recommending the original diet prescribed in Genesis 1!!
I am learning so much from you Dr. Berry. Thank you so much. I am passing on all of your info. So absolutely interesting.
“Higher than normal tryptophan level ( 2:45) and lower than normal orexins level ( 3:00) seem to be the culprits for food coma after each meal. Yet we still cannot say exactly why food coma happens ( 3:28). Try all different foods and figure it out yourself ( 3:40).
all your videos rooooooock. currently on a binge of all your vids and spamming my friends and family with them too. Keep doing what you do!
The absolute fuck is wrong with these people? They eat so much that they pass out!
OMGs, that Meerkat at the end just killed me. Talk about LMAO.: ) The science however, went a bit fast for my brain. I’ll have to watch this at least one more time. Info overload. But hey its been 20+ years since I went to college so my brain is a bit rusty in some categories, Ok a lot of categories… But hey at least I’m willing to keep learning!
I love your attitude and approach. GOOD stuff! I am no longer a food coma victim. Have been doing keto for a while now and now feel human again. I had it REALLY bad!
I lived on concentrated lemon juice with refined sugar for almost 2 weeks because I could not eat fruit without going bad. I convinced myself that I was having some kind of dysbiosis after reading some studies on the intake of saturated fats causing excess salts bile which creates a friendly environment for excess bacteria correlated with various gastrointestinal disturbances, including intolerance to starches and fruits. Now tolerate fruits, and even rice, which I never thought I could eat again.
How much fat as a percentage of total calories would you recommend? I’m very new to being a vegan and naturally the diet has a lower amount of fat than an omnivorous one. Would it be a negative thing, then to consume extra virgin olive oil? Right now my calories from fat is 30%, the reason I am hesitant to decrease it is (I think?) less testosterone will be produced at a low level of fat. Additionally I’ve read some studies which actually indicated a low-fat diet can increase the risk of heart disease. I’m not trying to discredit anything you are saying, your channel is actually what got me started on going Vegan! I just have some concerns about the level of fat that’s all:-). Thanks
You’re a remarkable M.D. Is using xylitol a healthy sugar substitute? Thanks in advance.
Can carb coma, in someone who has eaten keto for a long time, be because all those carbs are too much of a shock to the body that has been used to very low carbs? I.e. they have become physiologically insulin resistant.
Go watch “I Don’t” by Mariah Carey ft. YG It’s an earcandy.
A lot of commercially available melatonin is extracted directly from the pineal gland of sentient mammals, particularly pigs
This video rang a bell with me because I would eat a very large salad or a small meal with carbs and feel the coma coming on. Fortunately, I have been following the keto diet and I am starting to feel better.
I have been ketogenic for over 2 years and have for the past 4 or 5 months been virtually zero carb or under 10 g carbs but still end up falling asleep after my meals of fatty meat. I have had my fasting glucose and fasting insulin tests the last 2 sets of bloodwork and when I apply the formulas fr Dr. Ede’s information I show as being only marginally insulin resistant. This happens even if I don’t overeat protein. Should I be concerned and what should I be looking at/for?
Thanks for doing this Video. I had food coma for years before I was diagnosed as diabetic. I didn’t know what it meant either. If I had known I could have changed my way before I became diabetic. Now that I am on Keto, I have no food comas.
Thanks so much. I learned about Keto from you. I have been on it for 15 days, I’ve done two fasting days so far. I don’t need insulin any longer and have consistent blood sugars in the 80’s, and I feel great and I’ve lost enough weight I could fit on some roller coasters again and ride them with my son.
Such great information! I had an A1C in February 2018 when I had went to my Dr. for something totally unrelated. It was 7.8 and was the first time my sugar had ever been high. In September of 2017, I had a DOT physical and they checked me then and it was fine. In May 2018 I went back to my Dr. and got another A1C lab, it was 5.3 without any medication. After I found this channel on youtube and learned that I could reverse type 2 diabetes with just changing my diet to Keto, my life has changed for the better. I’ve lost 35-40lbs and will start an exercise program around September 10th since that will be 180 days of diet control and getting myself “addicted” to eating clean. Keep up the good work Dr. Berry, these videos saved me from just taking a pill and not improving my diabetes.
This affects the entire Indian Subcontinent. I just realized this. It is so quiet around 3:00 pm because people are sleeping.
Can aspartame cause food coma??????? It’s the only thing other than eggs, coffee and chiken I’ve eaten today!!!! Oh! And half a tomato!
Man does it overcook my grits when they have a ben & jerry’s commercial on a vegan channel.
So you’re saying that if I avoid eating too much carbs when I eat a big meal, I may avoid a food coma. That’s awesome!
Brain chemistry would be our best result if that is why food comas occur that would be the healthiest conclusion.
Ever since giving up quetiapine which was prescribed to me for psychosis years ago, I’ve had wakefulness and inflammatory response issues. After eating, I need to napI put it down to how my histamines were possibly diverting from keeping me awake to metabolising the food I had eaten. I have quite a lot of fatigue since being on that tablet. I think now that the best thing to recover mental health was rest and avoiding what would deoxygenate my brain, eg. smoking and consuming fluoride. My brain is fine now, not on tablets, but I have had trouble with my oesophagus inflaming, and fatigue. I’ll have to look into what you are saying about this, as gave up meat to stop inflammation (due to the fact that meat can act like a carcinogen) and need to reduce high cancer risk. Sleeping does help clear toxins from CNS, we should get 8 hours a day for melatonin production and a healthy liver, vital to health, from what I have researched.
I quit sugar and most big carbs for several weeks. I let my mom talk me into a DQ banana split and within an hour I was doing the heroin head nod. .
Off topic, but can you please do a video on keto while pregnant?
Its a well know fact that dietary cholesterol has little effect on blood cholesterol. They have newer studies than the one from 1975.
I am keto 4.5 years. But my experience on carnivour for 6 month was severe lethergy. I could not function. It would come and go one day good energy and next day it took all of me to get out of bed. I tried many things smaller doses of protein in a meal. One meal a day. Adding extra fat cutting fat. Did not matter. Meat made me just as tired after eating. I still dont get it. It’s crazy to me how some feel so good and some of us strugle so much. I loved the eating but I could not sustain it.
I did keto for 3 months… When stopped the food coma is getting worse… I get on a daily basis after the main daily meal.
What I was taught in biochemistry as a more likely explanation is that a blood pH increase occurs when chlorine is used to produce the HCl that the stomach needs. Such increase in the pH decrease the ability of hemoglobin to carry oxigen, and that causes (at least in part) a food coma.
As with any phenomenon in biology, it is very unlikely that “food coma” is going to be mechanistically explained by only one process, though
So if you’re already vegan and still get food comas on occasion, what could be the reason?
My cat has this all the time. If I buy turkey free Meow Mix, will he play with me?
I’m either tired after eating or I have diarrhea. I hate both!
You are basing your opinion on the studies that have happened almost half century agomedicine is not stuck, this is old info… 😉 howeverthanx for your work:)
haha fruits and vegetables EURGHH could never ever eat that. Great video as always!
I just woke up from a food coma.
Why did I have a food coma? My dumbass thought it was a good idea to eat 4 giant pancakes.
Very interesting information, however talk less fast.. it would be very helpful to get all the information in the brain, after an state of ‘coma’…:)
Hey! Can you show the source the the insulinogenic effect of protein? It is not listed below. Great video
Nice video, you forgot to mention postprandial alkaline tide, which also causes you to feel sleepy
man i’m really high and i cant pay attention as well as i want to bc i keep getting Into This music jammin
One thing I’ve learned as a production worker.. Never ever eat before working.. Never!.
You got viscosity backwards my man! Sludge blood is an INCREASE in viscosity. (Viscosity = resistance to flow) ✌
Here in Mexico we call that the “pig sickness”, because it happens just as if you were a pig: you eat and then you sleep. Or at least get very drowsy.
This didn’t really happen to me until AFTER I started Keto and IF. Now I get really sleepy after I eat my first meal. Trying to figure out why.
DR.BERRY, Will you do a video on the elevated mood with keto? I am starting week 3, on day 3 to 5 I was in the best mood of my entire life, I had so much energy and was just overall happy. Unfortunately, it didnt last and I want so badly to know how to get that feeling back.
Thank you
So if I get a food coma after eating potatoes and veggies (a lot like 1000-1300 kcal) it is just a nap?
hey Mic! just found your channel and absolutely love your videos and content! thanks so much for sharing your opinion with the world:) I recently became vegan (3-4 months ago) and it’s been life changing.
Hello DNews could you make an episode about how much shit is shat by americans in the 24h following Thanksgiving? Also a few elements of comparisong would be nice, like “enough shit to fill the statue of liberty”, that kind of image
I found a happy spot I have a big salad but lots of fats added and fiber always a whole avocado and Avocado oil some Pepitas and walnuts and no carb coma for me anymore 😉
Turkey coma: we mostly eat large amounts of turkey on Thanksgiving or Christmas, when we get up early to get the dinner ready, are kept busy and so, by the end of a long, busy day: exhausted.
GREAT VIDEO VERY INFORMATIVE THANK YOU FROM FLORIDA ♥️♥️♥️
Hey! Thank you for the amazing videos! Loving them all. Do you have any idea why some vegans have high triglycerides? Thanks!!
Just wondering… Urged by this channel and my own research, I have been oil-free for about a week and 1/2. Fortunately, I have not experienced a “food coma” during this time and I feel great. However, I have been craving walnuts and pumpkin seeds like crazy! I have allowed myself to indulge in maybe 1/2c to as much as a whole cup of them per day. Will this cause weight gain? I do not seem to be gaining. Should I let myself use them to transition and cut back later? Or not worry about it at all and enjoy them liberally? Anyone have thoughts, I’m open…
just eat complex carbs and never simple carbs and you’ll be fine for decades and decades
Wow. This Dr. Is amazing. So much helpful info in this channel! Thanks Dr!!!
I did an experiment with the food coma theory. Apparently, if you eat slower, chew your food and take sips of water occasionally while you are eating, not to mention taking a little 10 min walk when you are done will help with digestion. Of coarse, I did this experiment with the carnivore diet. On a side note, I’ve been on keto for 1 year and recently graduated to the carnivore diet.
wow I just realized I haven’t had a food coma since going vegan:o
Thanks for posting this I get sleepy after I eat no matter what it is even if it’s just a sandwich and my favorite holiday food is the dressing & Cranberry sauce.
So weak that the ad I got before watching this vid was for a prescription for lowering LDL after ALREADY taking the maximum dose of statins and eating a “healthy” diet
Love it how youtube keeps recommending me videos of yours since they are sooo good. A pity they only have so little views. Your time will come, I’m sure 😉
I signed in to comment just because this is absolute bullshit, fasting then eating can cause it. Not eating then eating can cause it, and its to do with your Liver metabolizing the nutrients. My blood sugar and all bloods are fine and if I don’t eat all day then eat, whatever food, I can get a food coma. Also drinking alcohol and not eating, then having a meal of any food, will likely cause a food coma. Like most things in your body its controlled by your LIVER, there you have it, this Dr is full of shit! However eating a wholegrain salad sandwich with no oils in it, other than say ham or chicken, tends to give me energy not make me sleepy. It is not a carb coma this person is full of shit.
i like your chocolate brown eyes, but the shirt color on your shoulders has a wierd color that deceives me to think that your shoulder always shrinking or growing and fucks with my brain. and the whole fucking point to this video is lost.
can we get someone fat ugly that’s less distracting. like Trace.
Do not workout after eating! I almost threw up cause I was hit with a food coma while working out.
I absolutely love all your videos. My family and I are on day 4 of our new vegan life and you are really inspiring us!
I was pretty sure i got tired because of blood to the stomac.. i need to look deeper into this but if it is sludge blood then thank you for inlightenment
While informative she delivered the info very boring and dry. Her VOICE puts me into a coma
My goodness, this got me watching. I have food coma after a salad lunch but not if I fast through or have zero carbs. Generally I am 50g carbs per day and am firmly Keto adapted. This video got me really thinking hard so thanks again so much doc.
I don’t know if I have food coma, necessarily. I’m just sleepy all the time, in general. It’s not only after a meal. I have been eating very low carb/high fat and my blood sugar readings are great during the day. (They’re still a bit high in the morning during fasting.) I’m down 26 pounds since June 11. I wonder if this all-the-time drowsiness is related to insulin resistance and my diabetes.
Asparagus ery day. If no asparagus ham will place a strong second.
What effects does overeating have on the body? I ask this because I’ve noticed changes in my body when I overeat. Apart from feeling like that creature from alien is about to burst out of my abdomen, i notice that my skin and eyes feel dry, I don’t just feel fatigued, I also feel extremely drowsy, I have a slower response in terms of stimuli and motor movements (in other words lethargic), and my private area feels “shriveled”. Usually in response to the dryness, I drink a lot of water but it doesn’t always help because I’m inputting to an already full stomach, making me feel worse. Despite the tired feeling, I have trouble falling asleep; it’s like I’m tired but wide awake simultaneously.
Hi Dr Berry, 54 6 ft. male down to 145lbs from 200lbs. I do get this when I eat a lot. Should I limit my intake?
Great, informative video! I just uploaded a video explaining another factor in tiredness that I believe you missed: hydration!
Oh my gosh! I totally pass out after eating carbs! I can barely even drive. Thank you for this video!
If you have low stomach acid you can feel the food coma from protein to…
I ate a lot of yogurt,a big bowl of cereal and 10 big pancakes
What about peanuts and foods like tahini? Do they decrease blood flow?
Lol, for anyone who did keto before, this is laughable. im just mind boggled. fats give more blood flow, carbohydrates spikes your insulin and causes food coma. don’t blame the butter for what the bread did.
Why speak so fast to explain, extremely annoying, I did not understand anything.
Sure, but sometimes “food coma” can just be a consequence of too little sleep
OMG, don’t doctors know this? I was told I was diabetic and had an A1c but she didn’t do the the other two tests you mentioned. However I’ve been off the diabetes meds since being on Keto, and I no longer have those shaky moments I was having!

I’ve been watching tons of your videos! You’re awesome!! Wondering if you’re a grad student or what you do?? I’ve recently decided to become vegan as a med student and am really thankful you have this channel with all of your amazingly put together scientific evidence to back up everything. I am planning to become a family medicine primary care doc, so I’m hoping I can one day help people with info about veganism as well! You’re inspiring. I’m a huge fan!
Anyone else feel too stupid to keep watching so you quit halfway through?
I never seen a person like this in my life who knows so much stuff and clear and straight to the point information
Holy… Someone finally explained something I should have learned as a child. Not being sarcastic. Thank you for this video bit late to the show. Working towards switching diet. Been very hard as it is a clear addiction. Yes I still eat animal stuff. in retrospect I use to eat almost a pound of meat a day as I was taught was a good thing. Down to about 2-3 animal products a month. Keep trying to stop alltogether then I goto a party with a pizza… One step at a time I sapose.
oh my gosh! I used to suffer food comas a lot. Then I changed my diet and minimized carbs and felt so my better. I recently fell back into this food coma hole and I feel horrible again. I’m tired all the time. After tonight’s dinner, PIZZA! (I already ordered it) I’m done with carbs! (Only good carbs allowed)
I can’t decide which of your videos to share. They are all so good!
This guy is going to be big soon! I love you vidoes brother, thumbs up on everyone of them within 30 seconds. Science based, no BS or ego.
Yet another amazing video! You are clearly super smart and your delivery is unmatched… it makes me curious what is your background as far as education or experience goes? (not that none would discredit anything you say, you spit straight truth my friend) Many of my Naturopath and Dr. professors at school had a shit ton of education and are still preaching for more protein and fat. Just curious. Keep fighting the good fight brother!:D
I just ate three massive bowls of chunky lentil soup (vegan and oil free) and nearly died from a food coma. WHAT GIVES?
Also could you examine the science behind a kush coma next?
How much protien is too much protien on keto? Is there a guide that tells people how much protien to eat?
Due to this coronavirus epidemic, I’ve been staying home & eating a lot… and I JUST experienced this food coma lol
breàd is a big sleeper for me, more than anything else I’ve ever eaten.
it’s caused by a high sugar meal, the insulin spike causes drowsiness as the blood sugar decreases energy levels decrease, high triglycerides are caused by sugar
